Moments Like This

Summary: Dean and (Y/N) are uncover trying to catch a witch. They had been inside the little office for nearly four hours and still no witch. (Y/N) was tapping her pencil against the desk as she looked at the victim’s files trying to make a connection. The bell from the door rang signaling a customer and (Y/N) looked up to see an older woman walking it.

“Hello, welcome to Winchester Travel Agency. How may I help you?” (Y/N) said in her most chipper voice ignoring the chuckles coming from the eldest Winchester brother in the little office.

The woman smiled shaking her hand, “I would like to book a trip to Paris for fall this year.”

(Y/N) sighed feeling her body filling with a warm sensation, “I’ve always wanted to see Paris in the fall. I hear it’s beautiful and romantic.” She said before she could stop herself, “Sorry. I’m sure Mr. Winchester can help you with that.”

She led the woman into his office where he was sitting behind a large desk in one of his FBI Suits. Of all days, he chose to wear her favorite of his suits and she could feel her knees getting weak. (Y/N) stepped out of the office and went back to her desk trying to concentrate on the case again. She felt restless sitting at her desk. All she could think about was Dean in his suit and how much she wanted to feel it beneath her fingertips.

(Y/N) shook her head trying to clear her head, “Damn it, get it together, (Y/N).” she mumbled to herself.

She looked up to see Dean walking to woman out of the office and he seemed a little distracted as he walked back into his office. From where she was sitting she could see him shrug out of his jacket leaving him in a white button-down and his tie. As if her body had a mind of its own she was getting up from her desk walking into his office.

“There was something off putting about that woman. I think we should look into her.” He was speaking into his phone to Sam who was back at the motel keeping an eye on other shops that could be targeted.

(Y/N) shut the door turning the lock while leaning against it. Dean sat down as he tossed his phone down on the desk. He looked up at her and suddenly there was a pink haze surrounding him. Her body felt drawn to him as she walked over to him.

“(Y/N), is everything okay?” he asked concern filling his olive eyes.

She bit her lip nodding, “It will be.” She whispered as she unzipped her skirt letting is pool around her feet.

Dean’s eyes went wide as she then pulled her panties down her legs. “W-What are you doing?” he asked rolling his chair backwards from her.

As he bumped against the wall, (Y/N) straddled his lap gripping his shoulders tightly. Her mind was screaming at her to stop but no matter what she could not. “I need you, Dean. I need you more than anything.” She whispered against his ear as she grinded her hips against him.

A low growl escaped his lips as he held her hips, “We can’t. I’m your boss.” He said as she giggled.

“You’re my pretend boss, Winchester. Plus, office sex is hot. Remember when we were teenagers and we watch porn for the first time? You said it was the hottest thing you ever saw. Let’s live out that fantasy, please Dean…” she was begging now.

Dean’s dark green eyes stared into hers and then she noticed a pink glow about them just as his lips came crashing to hers. He picked her up setting her on the desk spreading her legs wide. The sound of his belt unbuckling and zipper going down was music to her ears. His lips were leaving a burning trail down her neck to her collarbone as he angled himself with her.

The moment they were connected she saw blinding stars before her eyes. Their panting and groaning echoed through the small office as they both chased after the same release. When she felt her core tighten then snap warmth spread throughout her body as Dean buried his head into the crook of her neck. Obscenities tumbling from his lips as he came off his own high.

As soon as the connection was broken, everything became clear to (Y/N). The weight of what had just happened crashing on top of her crushing her. She quickly pushed a bewilder Dean off of her, “I-I have to leave. I’m sorry…” she said rushing to put her skirt back on and grabbing her panties.

She could hear Dean yelling her name as she ran from the building. She ran right into Sam as she had turned a corner, “(Y/N) what’s wrong?” he asked seeing her dishevel appearance and tears streaming down her cheeks.

“I-I… the witch…” she was stuttering as Sam grabbed a hold of her shoulders.

“Slow down, what about the witch?” he said just as Dean appeared from the office.

She reached into her jacket pocket pulling out the hex bag the witch had slipped in there, “She hexed me.” (Y/N) said as Dean reached into his own pocket grabbing a familiar hex bag.

“Son of a bitch…” he said as he and Sam burned the bags.

Two Weeks Later

(Y/N) still was feeling shame over everything that happened with the witch. They had figured out she was cursing them to live out their deepest desires. The people would feel so much shame and guilt from it they would end their own lives. Now, (Y/N) understand why feeling her own shame resting on her shoulders.

Her and Dean never spoke of what happened even when Sam had asked what their desires were. Dean shrugged saying they must have burned the bags before the curse could take full effect. He lied, and she did not know why. Her only conclusion was that he was completely embarrassed by the fact he had slept with her. All the women he had been with, she was sure that she was the worst he had ever been with.

Now, she felt like everything changed. (Y/N) was always able to keep her feelings for Dean separate from their friendship and the job. After being him, feeling him on top of her and within her, she could not go back to the way thing were. For the last few weeks, she had been hiding in her room and avoiding Dean at all possible cost. It was not his fault that she was in love with him, but she could no longer be around him.

Packing up her things, she made her way towards the garage praying that neither Winchester would see her sneaking out of the Bunker. Of course, luck was never on her side and Dean was coming from the garage just as she was walking into it.

“Hey (Y/N/N), where you are going?” he asked wiping grease of his hands with the rag from his back pocket.

Hearing her nickname from him made her heart ache in her chest, “I’m leaving.” She said simply pulling her the keys for her car from her pocket as she stepped past him.

“Whoa, wait a minute… what do you mean you’re leaving?” he asked gently grabbing her elbow.

She flinched at his touch and he instantly let her go. “I… I can’t be here anymore. I’m a risk factor now and there is no fixing it. It’s best if I leave.”

Dean stood in between her and her car, “Is this about what happened when we were cursed by that witch?” He paused as she looked anywhere but at him. “Sweetheart, we were cursed that’s all. Nothing has changed. I’m fine with what happened. We’re fine.”

(Y/N) scoffed, “Are you kidding me? We’re not ‘fine’!” she tried to shove him out of the way, but he grabbed her arms holding her in place.

“(Y/N), you can’t leave us, we need you.” He said his voice was filled with need that broke her heart, but she shook her head getting out of his grasp.

“I can’t… I can’t go back to how things were, and I know you can’t give me what I want. I-I’m sorry. Goodbye Dean.” She said pushing past him.

She got into her car tossing her bag into the backseat and starting it up. As she pulled out of the garage the last thing she saw was Dean standing there running his hand over his face. She wiped away the tears running down her cheeks and turned up her radio as she drove down the highway away from the only family she had ever known.

One Year Later

(Y/N) walked into her motel room dropping her bag on the floor. She was covered in vamp juices from taking out a nest in Dallas. Luckily, Claire was able to join her for this hunt and it made things a lot easier. Most of the time, (Y/N) hunted by herself but occasionally, she would hunt with one of the Wayward Girls from Sioux Falls.

She walked into the bathroom stripping off her clothes and getting in the shower. She let the hot water burn off all the blood and tension from her body. This was the point in her day that she hated the most. The still, quiet moments that allowed her brain to wonder about the Winchesters. What they were doing or how they were. She constantly would dream about Dean especially on the nights she would drink too much whiskey.

Stepping out of the shower she grabbed a towel that just barely covered her and walked into her room. She let out a startled screaming seeing Dean sitting at the small table in her room. “D-Dean?” she said blinking a few times.

His eyes traveled the length of her body before he looked up at her nodding, “You’re tough to find, sweetheart.”

She held the towel tighter around her as she went over to her bag to grab some clothes, “What are you doing here?” she asked not looking at him.

(Y/N) heard his chair scrape against the floor as he got up and she could feel him standing behind her. “I’m here for you. It’s been a long year, (Y/N/N).”

She sighed turning around to see he was mere inches away from her. (Y/N) swallowed hard, “It’s been a long year for me as well, but nothing has changed Dean.”

He shook his head running his large, rough hands down her bare arms, “Everything has changed, (Y/N). The moment we crossed that line everything for us both changed. I know you said I can’t give you what you want, but you never gave me a chance to try and I think I deserve at least that.”

She bit her lip nervously looking down at their feet. “Dean, if this is some half ass attempted to just get me back to the Bunker it’s not going to work. I miss you both, but I will not be a risk and I will not hide my feelings anymore. I know you don’t like girls like me and that’s fine, but I can’t watch you be with a new blonde in every town we hunt in. I… I just can’t.”

She looked up seeing Dean’s mossy eyes darkening as he looked down at her. His lips crashed down onto hers suddenly and he was pushing her towards the bed. The flimsy towel was barely being kept up as she fell back onto the mattress with Dean’s body hovering over hers.

“I don’t want the choice blonde of the day anymore. I tried to just move on, but I can’t. My mind is flooded with you. The way you looked with your lips parted moaning my name and how it felt to feel you clawing at my back urging me to go faster. I can’t stop hearing your whimpers and sighs or feeling your lips against my skin.” With every word he crawled over her body.

She let out a strangled breath, “Dean…” he growled against her jaw.

“Just let like that. I don’t want to hear anyone else say my name but you. I don’t want to feel anyone else against my body. I only want you and I have always felt this way. I was just scared that I would ruin our friendship or that worse you would run away from us. When you did leave my whole world came down on top of me. I need you in my life. I need you by my side. I need all of you, (Y/N).” His nose brushed against hers as his lips were just above hers.

Their eyes connected, and she could see that he was baring his soul for the first time. “Then I’m yours.” She whispered pressing her lips against his sealing their fates.

An hour later, as they laid cuddled together in bed Dean whispered, “I miss moments like this more than anything.”

She giggled, “This is only the second moment we’ve had like this.”

He flipped her onto her back hovering over her, “Then I guess we need to make more moments like this then. Once we get back to the Bunker, we will send Sammy away, so we can make moments like this in the library, the kitchen, the garage…” He kissed her in between each area as she began to laugh.

“Alright, slow down there Winchester. First, let’s go get something to eat then we can discuss all the areas you want to have me on.” (Y/N) said as he looked up at her mischievously moving down her body.

“Something to eat you say? Hmm… I just happened to have a craving for something particular right here.” He said as (Y/N) let out a long moan.

“I meant food but this… oh god… this is good too. Oh, Dean…” she groaned feeling him smile against her.

Miten päästä töihin ulkomaille

Mitä jos tekisit töitä Suomen palkkatasolla, mutta elinkustannuksesi olisivat puolet nykyisestä. Hyvään elintasoon pääseminen ei välttämättä vaadi suuria tuloja eikä raastavaa kulukuuria, jos pystyt tekemään töitä ulkomailla.

Ostin menolipun ja muutin Thaimaahan pysyvästi 28-vuotiaana. Tässä artikkelissa kerron, miten suunnitelet oman muuton ja pääset töihin ulkomaille pysyvästi tai tilapäisesti (esimerkiksi kesätöihin, työharjoitteluun tai välivuotta varten).

Miksi muuttaa pois Suomesta?

Armeijan jälkeen siirryin Tampereelle opiskelemaan, mutta suomalainen unelma (perhe, asuntolaina ja ura) ei jostain syystä vedonnut minuun. Olin työelämässä mukana 5 vuotta, mutta viimeisenä työvuotena en enää tuntenut olevani “kotona”, vaan aloin miettiä muita vaihtoehtoja.

Useimmat sanovat haluavansa muuttaa pois Suomesta paremman sään vuoksi. Ystävät, joihin olen täällä tutustunut harvoin kuitenkaan nostavat sitä ensimmäisenä esiin. Useimmat ulkomaille muuttajat näkevät elämänlaadun olevan parempi ulkomailla ja he todella nauttivat elämästä ulkomailla.

Jos tunnet tällä hetkellä jo olevasi “kotona” Suomessa ja sinulla on asiat siellä hyvin, todennäköisesti tulet jäämään Suomeen loppuiäksi. Jos sinulla on seikkailijan sydän tai sinua riivaa ajatus, millaista elämä olisi ulkomailla, suosittelen joko lähtemään ulkomaille pitkäksi ajaksi tai muuttamaan ulkomaille edes 6 kuukaudeksi.

Tutustu kohteeseen paikanpäällä tai etänä

En ollut koskaan käynyt Kaakkois-Aasiassa, joten säästin 6 viikkoa lomaa ja ostin lentoliput. Loman taka-ajatuksena oli selvittää, olisiko minun mahdollista muuttaa Kaakkois-Aasiaan. Kävin Thaimaassa, Malesiassa, Vietnamissa ja Australiassa. Reissun aikana sain sekä suomalaisia että ulkomaisia ystäviä.

Suomeen palattuani ilmoitin, että haluaisin jatkaa työn tekemistä Thaimaasta käsin. Viikkoa myöhemmin minut irtisanottiin ja ostin menolipun Thaimaahan 94 päivän päähän.

Sitten alkoi varsinainen suunnitelu!

Valmistaudu muuttoon hyvin

Irtisanomisen jälkeen ajattelin: “Hyvä! Minulla on jo osaamista, ja voin aina tehdä töitä ulkomailla vähintäänkin kääntäjänä, jos en löydä vakinaista töitä.” Koulun alkuvaiheessa olin nimittäin tehnyt töitä epävirallisena englanti-suomi-kääntäjänä freenlancer.com kautta noin 10 dollarin tuntihinnalla. Olin myös tehnyt joitain töitä toiminimellä, jonka olin perustanut kouluni alkuvaiheessa.

Aloin myydä yksittäisille yrityksille työelämässä saatua osaamistani. Ehdin saada Suomesta jo muutaman asiakkaan ennen Thaimaahan muuttoa. Samaan aikaan irtisanoin vuokrasopimukseni Suomessa, hankin tarvittavat rokotukset, riittävän matkavakuutuksen ensimmäiselle 3 kuukaudelle ja aloin hankkimaan turistiviisumia Thaimaahan.

Myin noin 30% tavaroistani tori.fi:ssä, ja 30% annoin joko ilmaiseksi pois tai hävitin. 20% jätin vanhempieni varastoon siltä varalta, jos pitää joskus tulla takaisin Suomeen. 10% omaisuudesta otin mukaani.

Raha-asiat kunnossa?

Muutama asiakas ei kuitenkaan riittänyt täystyöllistymiseen. Ajattelin, että näillä pääsen alkuun ja suunnitelmani oli jatkaa asiakkaiden ja pysyvän työn etsintää muuton jälkeen. Onneksi olin ottanut jonkun viisaamman neuvoista oppia ja kerännyt 2-3 kuukauden kulujen verran säästöjä, joten uskalsin muuttaa ulkomaille.

Ilman säästöjä en olisi voinut lähteä. Joten hanki joko tulot etukäteen tai kerää itsellesi säästöön rahaa ennen muuttoa.

Älä huoli – Suomeen voi aina palata!

Vaikka kulutukseni ylitti sen hetkiset tulot, ajattelin tämän olevan ainoa tilaisuuteni! Jos en nyt hyödyntäisi tätä tilannetta, en koskaan tulisi yrittämään muuttoa uudestaan. Minulla oli suunnitelma, varasuunnitelma sekä kohtuullinen luottamus sen onnistumiseen. Onneksi Suomeen voi aina palata!

Hyvästelin perheeni ja ystäväni ja hyppäsin lentokoneeseen kahden matkalaukun kanssa.

Ensimmäiset viikot ja ensimmäinen työ

Muutin aluksi Bangkokissa edulliseen yksiöön, niin sanottuun “rotanloukkuun” 125€/kk hinnalla. Internet-yhteytenä jaoin puhelimestani yllättävän laadukkaan 4G-yhteyden ja se riitti.

Halusin elää hyvin niukasti, jotta minulla oli aikaa laittaa raha-asiat kuntoon. Tein töitä edelleen asiakkailleni ja tein puhelinmyyntiä Suomeen omalta läppäriltä Skypen välityksellä suomalaiselle yrityksellä. Noin kuukauden jälkeen soittaminen ja työntekeminen “rotanloukusta” alkoi puuduttaa ja päätin etsiä töitä paikallisesta yrityksestä.

Sain ensimmäisen varsinaisen työpaikan ruotsalaisesta puhelinmyyntiyrityksestä. Se oli kohtuullisen hyvä yritys, tuote oli ok, ja palkka oli kohtalainen, mutta heidän myyntistrategia oli kokemukseni perusteella melko kehno. Olen aiemmin tehnyt puhelinmyyntiä ja opiskellut jonkun verran myynnin psykologiaa, joten tein itselleni uuden myyntiskriptin ensimmäisen viikon jälkeen ja seuraavalla viikolla onnistuin tekemään 12-17 kauppaa päivittäin kuluttumatta itseäni loppuun.

Puhelinmyynti on erittäin hyvä tapa tehdä rahaa, mutta suosittelen ensin joko käymään nettikurssin myynnistä tai vähintäänkin kuuntelemaan audiokirjan ennen työhön ryhtymistä. Tienaat varmasti enemmän ja työ on miellyttävämpää, kun kädet ja ääni ei tärise luurissa. Puhelinmyynti näyttää myös hyvältä CV:ssä, koska työnantajat näkevät, että olet valmis tekemään aloitteita ja tekemään ns. likaista työtä.

Puhelinmyyntiyrityksissä on paljon vaihtelevuutta varsinkin ulkomailla. Suuri osa toimii fiksusti, mutta osassa yrityksiä joko palkat ovat huonoja, luvat on hoidettu pöydän alla epävirallisesti, myytävät tuotteet ovat surkeita tai myynnin koulutus on kehnoa. Siksi puhelinmyyntiyrityksissä kauttaaltaan on niin suuri vaihtuvuus.

Ensimmäisen työpaikan ei kuitenkaan tarvitse olla täydellinen.

Toinen työpaikka ulkomailla

Kun sinulla on jo joku varma työpaikka tai tulonlähde, löydät paremman työpaikan äärettömän paljon helpommin!

Tein puhelinmyyntiä kyseisessä yrityksessä noin kolme viikkoa, kunnes yksi Thaimaassa asuvista ystävistäni kertoi suomalaisesta yrityksestä, joka etsi työntekijää asiakaspalveluun. Kyseessä oli vakavarainen yritys, jonka tiesin entuudestaan.

Päivitin värillisen CV:ni ja laitoin hakuilmoituksen ohjeiden mukaisesti. Sain kutsun työhaastatteluun. Työhaastatteluun meni aikaa noin 90 minuuttia, eikä sen jälkeen tarvinnut enää tehdä myyntipuheluita. Sain paremman palkan, työajat ja -edut sekä sain oli mahdollisuuden oppia uutta ja edetä uralla.

Taloustilanteeni kääntyi plussan puolelle ja muutin saman tien pois rotanloukusta kerrostalohuoneistoon hyvien kulkuyhteyksien varrella Bangkokin keskustassa. Huoneiston katolta löytyy 25-metrinen uima-allas, kuntosali ja Harvian sauna. Alakerrassa on oma kauppa aidatulla alueella ja kiertävät vartijat, jotka toivottavat aina hyvää päivää, kun poistuu tai palaa alueelle. Tämän 38m2 huoneiston vuokrakin on vain 450€/kk, mikä on kohtuullisen hyvä verrattuna Suomen hintatasoon.

Työmoraalini oli korkea, ja pääsinkin asiakaspalvelun esimiestehtäviin 5 kuukauden jälkeen ja palkkani nousi entuudestaan.

Olin siinä yrityksessä kaiken kaikkiaan 13 kuukautta, kunnes tuli seuraava mahdollisuus eteen…

Etätöitä Suomeen

Ole valmis oppimaan uutta ja tekemään uusia ystäviä!

Vanha tuttavani oli vierailemassa Thaimaassa ja totta kai tapasimme kupposen äärellä. Noin kolmannen kaljan kohdalla siirryimme puhumaan hänen yrityksestä ja suunnitelmistaan. Kävi ilmi, että he tarvitsivat pian erityisosaamista omaan yritykseen. Kerroin olevani kiinnostunut ja olevani valmis oppimaan. Kysyin, että mitä tarvitsisi oppia, jotta voisin tehdä kyseistä työtä.

Kahden kuukauden ajan kävin hänen suosittelemaa verkkokurssia, josta sain tarvittavan erityisosaamisen. Tein työnäytteen ja hän palkkasi minut tekemään etätöitä ulkomailta. Tilanne oli win-win, koska halusin oppia uutta ja työmoraaliini oli kunnossa eikä alkuperäinen palkkapyyntöni ollut esteenä pienemmän elintason vuoksi.

Etätöiden tai töiden tekemisessä halvemmissa maista on se etu, että veroja ei tarvitse maksaa Suomeen ja pienemmällä palkalla saa enemmän.

Mitä eri töitä voit tehdä ulkomailla?

Periaatteessa kaikki Suomessakin tarjolla olevat työt on mahdollisia tehdä ulkomaillakin. Valitettavasti osa töistä esim. talonrakennus on todella huonopalkkaista ulkomailla, joten sitä ei kannata välttämättä lähteä tekemään ulkomaille. Osaan töistä tarvitaan hyvä koulutus tai osaaminen, mutta osaan töitä ei tarvitse mitään koulutusta tai pelkkä aiempi kokemus riittää.

      Mistä etsiä ulkomailla tehtäviä töitä?

Jos haluat töihin suomalaiseen yritykseen, voit etsiä töitä googlaamalla “työtehtävän nimen” ja perään sanan “ulkomailla”. Esimerkiksi “sairaanhoitaja ulkomailla”. Tällä tavalla saat jo vastauksia kysymyksiisi.

Voit olla myös yhteydessä suoraan yrityksiin ja kysyä heidän avoimia työpaikkojaan. Jos työ ei heti tarjoa etätyön mahdollisuutta, se ei tarkoita ettei sitä työtä voisi tehdä etänä. Jos saman työn voi tehdä toimistolla tai kotona, sinun täytyy vain vakuuttaa, että voit tehdä töitä myös etänä.

Joissain töissä on parempi aloittaa työt ensin Suomessa ja sen jälkeen alkaa kysyä, voisitko osan päivistä tehdä kotoa. Jos tämä onnistuu sinulta, ulkomaille muuton ei pitäisi olla enää iso askel.

Jos asut ulkomailla yli 180 päivää vuodessa, maksat verot siihen maahan.

Thaimaassa maksan tällä hetkellä tasan 30% ja 70% saan pitää. Tähän 30% osuuteen kuuluu palkkani laskutus suomalaiselta työnantajalta, oma työpiste kiinteällä internetillä, viisumin ja työlupani järjestäminen sekä tuloverojeni maksu ja ilmoittaminen Thaimaan valtiolle. Näin en ole laittomasti maassa, eikä minun tarvitse huolehtia muusta kuin oman työni tekemisestä.

Ainoa huono puoli on, että en saa olla Suomessa yhtäjaksoisesti yli 3 kuukautta tai Suomi laskee minut takaisinmuuttajaksi. Toisaalta niin pitkään en olisi Suomessa muutenkaan.

Sosiaaliturvan osalta on hyvä muistaa tämä Kelan sääntö: “Jos muutat ulkomaille tilapäisesti eli alle 6 kuukaudeksi, olet yleensä oikeutettu Kelan etuuksiin. Jos olet ulkomailla yli 6 kuukautta, muuttoasi pidetään vakinaisena. Tällöin oikeutesi Kelan etuuksiin päättyy yleensä muuttopäivään.”

Yhteenveto

Ulkomaille lähteminen vaatii suunnittelua ja valmistautumista. Toistaiseksi en ole vielä kuullut liiommin kokemuksia, että ihmiset olisivat katuneet ulkomaille lähtöä. Tietysti huonojakin kokemuksia on ihmisillä, jos suunnittelu on jäänyt vajaaksi, rahat loppuvat kesken tai ulkomailla tapahtuu jotain poikkeuksellisen ikävää.

Jos edelleen olet sitä mieltä, että haluaisit kokeilla ulkomailla asumista, kannustan ehdottomasti lähtemään!

New world news from Time: Myanmar Is Bulldozing Rohingya Villages in a Move Some Fear Is Erasing Evidence of Atrocities

(BANGKOK) — First, their villages were burned to the ground. Now, Myanmar’s government is using bulldozers to literally erase them from the earth — in a vast operation rights groups say is destroying crucial evidence of mass atrocities against the nation’s ethnic Rohingya Muslim minority.

Satellite images of Myanmar’s troubled Rakhine state, released to The Associated Press by Colorado-based DigitalGlobe on Friday, show that dozens of empty villages and hamlets have been completely leveled by authorities in recent weeks — far more than previously reported. The villages were all set ablaze in the wake of violence last August, when a brutal clearance operation by security forces drove hundreds of thousands of Rohingya into exile in Bangladesh.

While Myanmar’s government claims it’s simply trying to rebuild a devastated region, the operation has raised deep concern among human rights advocates, who say the government is destroying what amounts to scores of crime scenes before any credible investigation takes place. The operation has also horrified the Rohingya, who believe the government is intentionally eviscerating the dwindling remnants of their culture to make it nearly impossible for them to return.

One displaced Rohingya woman, whose village was among those razed, said she recently visited her former home in Myin Hlut and was shocked by what she saw. Most houses had been torched last year, but now, “everything is gone, not even the trees are left,” the woman, named Zubairia, told AP by telephone. “They just bulldozed everything … I could hardly recognize it.”

The 18-year-old said other homes in the same area that had been abandoned but not damaged were also flattened. “All the memories that I had there are gone,” she said. “They’ve been erased.”

Myanmar’s armed forces are accused not just of burning Muslim villages with the help of Buddhist mobs, but of carrying out massacres, rapes and widespread looting. The latest crisis in Rakhine state began in August after Rohingya insurgents launched a series of unprecedented attacks on security posts.

Aerial photographs of leveled villages in northern Rakhine State were first made public Feb. 9 when the European Union’s ambassador to Myanmar, Kristian Schmidt, posted images taken from an aircraft of what he described as a “vast bulldozed area” south of the town of Maungdaw.

Satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe indicates at least 28 villages or hamlets were leveled by bulldozers and other machinery in a 30-mile (50-kilometer) radius around Maungdaw between December and February; on some of the cleared areas, construction crews had erected new buildings or housing structures and helipads. A similar analysis by Human Rights Watch on Friday said at least 55 villages have been affected so far.

The images offer an important window into what is effectively a part of Myanmar that is largely sealed off to the outside world. Myanmar bars independent media access to the state.

The government has spoken of plans to rebuild the region for months, and it has been busily expanding roads, repairing bridges, and constructing shelters, including dozens at a large transit camp at Taungpyo, near the Bangladesh border. The camp opened in January to house returning refugees; but none have arrived and Rohingya have continued to flee.

Myint Khine, a government administrator in Maungdaw, said some of the new homes were intended for Muslims. But that does not appear to be the case for the majority of those built or planned so far, and many Rohingya fear authorities are seizing land they’ve lived on for generations.

One list, published by the government in December, indicated 787 houses would be constructed, most of them for Buddhists or Hindus. Only 22 of the houses were slated for “Bengalis” — the word Myanmar nationalists often use to describe the Rohingya, who they say are illegal migrants from Bangladesh.

Myint Khine said the government had no ulterior motive.

“Of course we have been using machines like earth removers and bulldozers because we have to clear the ground first before building new houses,” he said.

Chris Lewa, whose Arakan Project monitors the persecuted Muslim minority’s plight, said the degree to which the villages had been razed would make it even harder for the Rohingya, who have no citizenship and few rights, to ever reclaim their land.

“How will they identify where they lived, if nothing is left, if nothing can be recognized?” Lewa said. “Their culture, their history, their past, their present — it’s all being erased. When you see the pictures, it’s clear that whatever was left — the mosques, the cemeteries, the homes — they’re gone.”

Richard Weir, a Myanmar expert with Human Rights Watch, said on the images he had seen, “there’s no more landmarks, there’s no trees, there’s no vegetation.”

“Everything is wiped away, and this is very concerning, because these are crime scenes,” he said. “There’s been no credible investigation of these crimes. And so, what we’re talking about really is obstruction of justice.”

Both Weir and Lewa said no mass graves were known to have been destroyed. But, Weir added: “We don’t know where all the graves are … because there is no access.”

Zubairia, who asked that only one of her names be used to protect her identify because she feared reprisals, said she did not believe any of the newly constructed homes were intended for Rohingya.

“Even if they give us small houses to live in, it will never be the same for us,” she said. “How can we be happy about our houses being ripped off from our land?”
