You know what i love about this “embrace the weird” type of story that Imogen and Laudna are telling? (because, it’s not a brand new type of story, they know that and so do we). This one feels important and personal because, in my opinion:
It is not cutesy, random, quirky, kind of weird.
It’s a fucked up, debilitating, haunting, hard to deal with, kind of weird.
Imogen has an impossible time trying to connect with people (and society at large) because she can read your thoughts, and the sound of other people's minds literally gives her migraines and headaches. Is not just being an introvert plus general anxiety, she is shown to suffer real physical, debilitating pain because of her condition.
Laudna is the product of high level necromancy, which carries in universe taboos. As a result, she suffers from physical manifestations — from the black goo to her haunting looks— that don’t allow her to exist in any place without raising suspicious looks. If she stays for a while, people will have issues, people will inquire. Sometimes violently.
They’re weird all right, to put it lightly, and their conditions were trusted upon them. They were forced to live like this, nobody asked them if they wanted it, they got no help, and no guidance. All alone dealing with that stuff …
Until they found each other.
It’s the combination of their sorcerer “You were born like this” + “You also gotta deal with this stuff that was put upon you later in your life”. And that neither of those things are easily managed in their universe.
This resonates with a bunch of personal stuff, and real world things that well, i’m wildly unqualified to talk about. But yeah, if it sounds familiar… yeah
They really deserve a break.
#critical role#cr meta#laudna#imogen#cr3#yeah i can't really talk about more personal stuff like#my relationship with queernes or neurodivergent brain or chronic issues because i'll be afraid of people undermining it#so i won't! :)#but like... cmon...#its very easy to see it there#also the rest of the bells deal with it in some form or another which is fantastic#this is just a part that calls me and my marisha centered brain#but ashton and fearne and chut... they all show some form of this complexity so well too
