i don't mind at all!! i love when i get asks with lots of questions!!

so, i got into haikyuu in... 2021? i want to say? that sounds right. i had a lot of free time and i had been playing mystic messenger (lol) and i wanted something to keep me occupied between chat rooms so i was looking for things to watch! i don't really remember why i decided to watch haikyuu, that was when it was on netflix so it may have been as simple as "i want to watch an anime, oh this one looks neat and i've heard about it before"

as for what made me stay.... not sure! it was really engaging and i remember the matches had me on the edge of my seat and freaking out in my bedroom and i was like "i can't believe a volleyball anime is captivating me (<- not a sports person)"

and the characters too! they're all well written and i always enjoy when creators give us extra information (character sheets). and i latched onto suga really hard and never let go. this was also a few months after the second part of season 4 wrapped up so the fandom was pretty active which helped.

trying to think of any iwaoisuga headcanons i have that i haven't discussed here... i've been thinking about pets a lot! about two years ago i made a whole bunch of pet headcanons but those are kinda outdated now. i've changed my mind.

i think iwa already has a dog when they start dating. an akita he got in high school named kenji! (she is a girl but is named kenji because they thought she was a boy and the name stuck) when iwaizumi told oikawa he was naming her this, oikawa was like "AFTER FUTAKUCHI??" and iwa was like "who?" [doesn't remember names]

anyway. oikawa has a love hate relationship with her. she is, all things considered, a lovely and well behaved dog but she's also very stubborn and doesn't always want to listen to oikawa specifically. also oikawa in my mind is the type of guy who would get kinda jealous over a dog. [in a... silly way, not a serious toxic way]

suga loves her <33 they're besties... she loves him too, very excited when suga comes to the apartment. animals and children love sugawara koushi. bc he's so cool and has a comforting presence.

(and then i have thoughts about a cat too! but i have a wip about this so i won't go into detail)

some other headcanons/thoughts on their dynamic (many are inspired by conversations i've had with friends - shout out to ash and bex specifically)

i think suga specifically has a way of bringing out iwa's sillier side. a little better than oikawa can. suga tells people that iwaizumi is the funniest guy he knows and people are like "... Him?" because funny isn't the first word they think of when they think iwaizumi hajime. but suga thinks he's very funny. they both really enjoy puns and jokes that other people would argue are bad.

as we know, oikawa can be dramatic and overreacts to things sometimes. it is very intentional and he does it because he know it annoys iwaizumi. suga likes to enable him sometimes because he ALSO likes seeing iwaizumi exasperated

iwaoi have many silly arguments. suga likes listening to these silly arguments and thinks they are very entertaining. (the fact that he's endeared/entertained and not annoyed by this is how they knew it was meant to be)

suga also likes when iwaoi get competitive over silly things. (suga is also a guy who gets competitive over silly things but the things he gets competitive over doesn't always overlap with what iwaoi are getting competitive over) sometimes oikawa talks about winning at being a boyfriend and iwa is like "you can't win at that" but iwa is also invested in 'winning' at being a boyfriend. <- they are not serious, ofc. i must make it clear this is in a silly way, not a toxic way. they have a healthy relationship.

before they started hanging out with suga, iwa always teased oikawa for not having much of a spice tolerance. and then they started hanging out with suga and iwa realized that compared to suga, he ALSO doesn't have much of a spice tolerance. suga often has to tone down spicy meals he cooks for them because his spice tolerance is absurdly high. iwa indulges him sometimes too though... even if it means his mouth will be burning.

i like lots of suga ships other than iwaoisuga!! i really enjoy kurosuga and i've made a few posts about it!! also a fan of sugaten but i haven't really made any posts about them. i think they're neat though. and sugayaku! sugayaku is lovely and really cute. very underrated too. ASASUGA!!! asasuga is so cute. i think about asahi calling to suga to set to him a Lot. there are others but these are the 'big' ones i would say.

i am very picky about daisuga though, i like when some of my mutuals do it and i like poly ships with daisuga (asadaisuga, kurodaisuga, etc) but otherwise i usually only talk about their dynamic platonically lol.

mm looks like it’s time for some more haikyuu rambles from yours truly, this time about oikawa in fandom.

as a disclaimer, i’m not trying to say there’s any “right” or “wrong” way to interpret oikawa; he’s very layered and very nuanced, which are some of the reasons he’s so popular and relatable as a character. but i saw a series of tweets which i half-agreed with and half-disagreed with, so i just wanted to write out some of my thoughts on the matter.

now, these particular tweets were about the way oikawa is portrayed in fics, that he’s made to be too soft and not toxic enough. which i agree with… to some degree. another tweet claimed that oikawa is “not a nice person even a little bit.” which i disagree with. but, again, only to some degree.

do i think oikawa is a nice person? if he likes you, yes. do i think oikawa is a rude person? if he doesn’t like you, yes.

that’s honestly one of the things i love about oikawa myself. he’s rude and he’s petulant and he has no problem telling it to you straight when he doesn’t like you. he picks on tobio and he sticks up his nose at ushijima. he’s full of pride and ambition. he hates to lose. he’s self-centered to some degree. he’s definitely very narcissistic (sometimes for show, but sometimes genuinely).

but i don’t think this makes him “bad” or “not nice.”

here he is being perfectly sweet to the fangirls who like him and brought him food and want to take pictures with him.

and here he is showing support to his best friend in the exact way he knows iwa needs it in that moment—a subtle yet impactful slap to the back.

additionally, oikawa’s volleyball superpower is connecting with his teammates and accommodating them and tailoring his every move to what his spikers need; his playing style is the complete opposite of self-centered. and iwa has described oikawa as a “generally silly guy” in their middle school flashback. he’s a playful guy and he’s sweet to girls and good to his teammates and the people he does like. i’m not saying all this makes oikawa perfectly 100% nice—but it does offset some of the bad qualities.

i read an iwaoi fic once that i found had one of the most refreshing portrayals of oikawa i have ever read; he was rude and selfish and he thought mostly about himself, and he was perfectly aware of all of it. but when i got to the end of the fic, the author’s note said something along the lines of how the author hates oikawa but just found him very interesting to write. which shocked me a lot (mostly because that’s not something you want to read at the end of an iwaoi fic when you’re a huge iwaoi/oikawa fan, lol). this changed my view of the fic a lot, but also made me evaluate what it was about the fic that i felt had captured oikawa so differently from other writers (who actually like him).

the answer is basically that a lot of the fandom does indeed look at oikawa through rose-colored glasses. which is a perfect segue into the next topic: how oikawa is portrayed in fandom/fics.

why do i think oikawa is written off as too soft in fics? mostly, because he’s an angst magnet.

he has his knee injury and his fall from grace, and fandom loves to write him as sad, broken, and pining secretly over his best friend. (i’m also guilty, lol). i also feel like, because he used to get so much hate in the early beginnings of the haikyuu fandom, a lot of people began to write him in a much nicer light as a counter.

there’s also this trope in iwaoi fics where iwa is the macho man with no feelings, so oikawa must be his opposite: whiny and pouty and cute. and i know i’m not the only one who gets frustrated with this portrayal of oikawa. he’s a seventeen-year-old boy, but he gets written off as a whiny eight-year-old child who doesn’t take anything seriously and tears up at the first sign of trouble.

yes, he’s silly, and i wouldn’t exactly say he’s “toxic.” but he’s wily, cunning, and very intelligent. and he’s salty as heck. he wants to be on top, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get there. he’s also not one to forgive and forget.

i remember when oikawa made an appearance during the inarizaki match.

many people were quick to point out that oikawa watching the match must mean he’s cheering on kageyama or that he’s on karasuno’s side. which i personally thought makes no sense in the context of oikawa’s character. this, to me, looks more like the face of someone who’s frustrated that it’s not him at nationals, who’s maybe annoyed about his rival getting praises, who’s feeling salty and driven to do even better.

so then why do people “beautify” oikawa so much?

the thing about fanfiction is that it’s an escape. if someone wants to write oikawa being cute and happy and best buddies with kageyama/ushijima, there’s nothing wrong with that. he’s not always a good person, sure, but he’s not always a bad person either. he hums and skips when he walks and he loves being fawned over, but he also wrestles for volleyballs with kageyama and takes photos of kageyama bowing down to him. that’s what’s so lovely about him: the layers.

so, re: the fic i mentioned earlier.

did i like that it painted oikawa as such a horrible person? not completely, no. i definitely don’t think the answer exactly is to portray oikawa in a hateful light.

but i liked that it didn’t make him a perfect golden boy who’s never done anything wrong, because there are honestly not enough portrayals of him like that out there. to completely write off oikawa’s petulance and narcissism means essentially writing off a big part of his personality.

basically, my son is salty!

So I have no idea what this is about lol I basically like to ignore all the salt shakers I’m salty enough myself as it is ;p . You haven’t been into HQ this long but how on earth did you stumble into this part of the fandom, oh dear… the Haikyuu fandom is one of the least toxic fandoms in my personal experience ._.  It may be to do with ship wars which is utterly ridiculous but these are just my conjectures. Such negativity never gets anywhere and people tend to sanctimoniously bring some debatable opinions onto the arena as fact (opinions are not fact) and tie it to their own self worth so they can feel better about themselves, I guess, while trying to make other people feel bad about their preferences and favourite characters.

Oikawa is a deep and severely flawed character in Haikyuu, you need to either;1) do more in depth research and form your own solid opinions/interpretations on    (i) Oikawa’s character, and;     (ii) What kind of conduct qualifies as abuse (I mean it, read some papers); OR2) Basically pay no mind to any part of the fandom that is unreasonably causing you distress. (See I think the way to go is to respect other people’s opinions and agree to disagree, but don’t force unsolicited opinions of your own onto other people.) I don’t see why certain isolated parts of a fandom should cause you any reason for concern or sway your feelings towards characters and relationships.
