I absolutely adore her friendship with Juri. It made me really happy to see Ruki make friends with another girl her age and teaching Juri how to use cards was so adorable. Ruki and Juri really care for one another and it makes me happy when they interact. Juri has two hands, after all.

She’s autistic and the scene where her mom has pictures of her taken, she experiences sensory overload from the flashes and noise and that’s why she storms off. I consider it canon but without verbal confirmation it’s hard for people who aren’t autistic to believe this, unfortunately. 

General opinion

In my eyes, she’s the true main character of Tamers. She goes through the most development of anyone and, where Juri is most certainly the heart of the show, I think Ruki is the soul. It’s so incredible to see a girl lead have an issue where she’s too ruthless and, even when her ice thaws, she’s still a really strong lead. And for her mother to have given birth to her really young? I’d never seen a kid’s show touch on something like that before. I also love that she never has to stop being a tomboy. Apparently, in a drama CD or something, it says she becomes a motocross biker when she gets older and I couldn’t possibly be happier for her.

Question. What's more poignant, Ruki in a loveless marriage (to a guy) or Ruki being alone because the trauma of what happened in Tamer's? Cause I feel that if I just went, nope, to her character growth shown in the series it misses the point a bit.

I don’t think you follow my main so you may not have known this

But the topic of obviously gay women entering loveless marriages with men happens to be HUGELY relevant to the present goings-on in one of my other current obsessions (it has a zestful flavor), so this question is tugging at my heartstrings in JUST the right way

So if that was by accident, or even if it was on purpose, kudos

Anyway, to answer your question, I definitely think Ruki being in a loveless marriage to a guy is by far the most poignant scenario. Perhaps made even moreso by the likelihood of the scenario. The Hata family (Ruki’s mother’s maiden name) is clearly a wealthy one, and likely has been for generations (I’m basing this assumption on the size and style of their home), and it’s not uncommon for wealthy families to have arranged marriages in order to keep the family fortune among the already-established. Now, there are clues that Rumiko went against her family’s (or perhaps just her father’s) wishes for her, and that Seiko chose to support her in this. Thus, the scenario I’m imagining is that another wealthy family is looking to marry their son into wealth and turn to the Makino family. Neither Rumiko nor Seiko are interested, but Ruki, despondent and directionless, agrees to it, simply because no other path has yet presented itself. 

And then I cry myself to sleep thinking about the long-term implications of this situation and rewatch Episode 39 for the billionth time.
