as the world gets hotter than ever, we're going to see more and more new kinds of climate related deaths. In Phoenix, ER doctors are facing a new kind of heat illness, as the patients temperatures are no longer measurable on thermometers, so they're getting over 110°f. extreme heat death looks like rapid decay: once you slowly get too hot, your cell walls cook down and your insides melt into a liquid. technically it's reported as "organ failure" but this inner liquification has never been recorded so frequently before.

Of course these sudden deaths are in the most precarious people, the elderly who can't figure out their new thermostat app, homeless mentally ill whose brain melts a little more every summer, a drug addict who passes out, a baby who stops crying in a hot car ride, who can't afford to run the AC or it's too old. Climate disaster HAS reached the global north, and our nice air conditioned apartments which miraculously haven't caused any serious outages are the only reason we didn't all die this summer.

The cool human adaptation part: people in the Mojave and Sonoran are shifting to being nocturnal. Las Vegas has done this for decades. Shopping centers, restaurants, sometimes museums, runners clubs, and the zoos are opening late at night and staying open until 3am so people (and animals) can stay inside and sleep the entire day.
