Just Pretend (BEOMGYU) CH3 - New Moon
Tumblr media
We slow as we come up on a red light.
"So... where are we going?" I ask
"You'll see" He answers.
He makes a left turn. As we continue down the road, fewer and fewer cars are seen. Finally, he slows into a small parking lot with no cars in sight.
"We're here!" He announces.
This time, I open the door for myself and step out onto the asphalt, breathing in the chilling night air.
We begin walking through the park, treading slowly over gravel paths. Our steps synchronize at a steady pace, but my heart is still beating rapidly.
The moon's glow brightens his side profile, eyes gazing down at the path before us and a subtle smile painted on his face. I didn't think about how difficult it would be to spend all this time with him, him whom I don't know all that well. I didn't calculate the struggle of pretending to date him, but making sure he knows I'm pretending. In my head, I'm not pretending. Not at all.
"So, why this park?" I ask, "I mean- it's a very nice park! Really! Just... why this one?"
"My house is near here, so I come here a lot" he answers.
"Cool, cool"
He exhales deeply, "but, I guess it also means a lot to me because it's the only place I can be..." he pauses in thought, "myself"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it's not like I'm not myself with others, like at school, but I'm not fully honest either" he elaborates, "I'm still trying to make people like me. Still trying to hold up the expectations on me"
I think about it for a second. Expectations, what expectations? Isn't he perfect?
So I ask, "What expectations are on you?"
He goes silent. Was that the wrong thing to ask? He sighs, "I don't know"
"I mean, what image do you have to hold up? You're already perfect. Everyone likes you"
"That image. The image of this perfect guy with perfect friends and perfect grades and... and," he stops, "and a perfect dad"
Wrong thing to say! I keep my eyes away from him.
I start, "sorry, I didn't know"
"No, it's okay, you wouldn't," he replies, "I just can't imagine anyone looking at me and thinking I'm perfect. I'm such a mess" he laughs.
"You seem perfect to me. Seriously, your hair is better than mine and I spend so long each morning styling it" I joke.
"I do have that," he chuckles.
"You absolutely don't have to tell me if you're not comfortable with it," I say, "but what did you mean when you were talking earlier? About your friends and your dad?"
"Oh," he pauses.
"It's okay if you don't-"
"No, it's fine. I uh-, my dad gets mad because my grades aren't the best, but it's not like I'm being lazy. I guess it doesn't help that I'm trying to pursue music, he never was one for art. Always thought it was a waste of money"
"I'm sorry. That's hard, he just doesn't understand where you're coming from" I reply. I wouldn't have expected that, I can't even believe he's okay with telling me all this!
"It's just... do you ever feel like people don't understand you? Like they don't even try?" He asks, looking at me. We make eye contact. And this time, I don't break it.
"Yes" I answer before looking away, "all the time. Whenever I talk to others at school, they never really let me in"
"Really?" He asks.
"Yeah. Everyone just kinda assumes that I don't want friends. But even when I try, they never really... get me."
"Exactly. My friends don't either" He says.
"What about Yeonjun? You seemed like you were great friends earlier"
"I mean, I enjoy talking to him. But I feel like... he has better friends than me"
"Aren't you all one friend group?" I question.
"We all hang out together at school" he says, "but... I feel like I don't quite fit in with them. Like if I keep my head down, they let me tag along. But I-, I try not to be too much myself because I don't know if they'd like me if they really knew me"
"Maybe I would" I said, though it came out more as a question.
He glanced at me in shock, before it settled in a smile.
"Maybe"
-------
As we reach my front door, I pause and turn to him. He stops on the steps to the deck.
"I had a good time" I say.
He looks down as his lips tilt up, "yeah, I'm really glad we did this"
"I know that we were just doing this as pretend," I whisper, "but I think this is the first time, in a long time, that I've really had fun with-, with a friend"
He looks into my eyes for the last time that night and says, "yeah, me too"

I hope this isn't an unwelcome addition re: your vent about race, but it reminds me of my own experiences.
I didn't know I was latino until I was 13. Yeah there were *very* strong "hints", what with the whole "grandparents only speak spanish with limited english", "parents can speak spanish", "we're brown (except for my mum)", & "eat spanish food at grandparents". But like. I had never heard someone say what we actually were and I was afraid it'd be racist if I assumed we were latino if we might not be. For some reason.
Hah, I remember getting kinda mad at people who (rightly) criticized the "ambiguously brown" trope in media, because it was the experience I most related to. That's what *I* was. I wasn't anything specific, I was just ambiguosly brown for most of my life.
So like. I finally asked my dad what we were and he was essentially like "haha what are you stupid or something. We're LATINO obviously, what a silly question!"
So I just went "Oh okay." And pumped the brakes on our conversation. Quickly after I realised that that wasn't enough for me. "Latino" is a rather broad category, I wanted to know what *exactly* we were.
I felt kind of stupid after that though, and I didn't want to draw attention to how stupid I was by asking a follow up question (nor did I want to talk to my dad), so I just didn't until I was 16.
I got to thinking about it again, and I realised that El Salvador had been mentioned quite a few times in regards to ~parent lore~ (I truly did not know much about my parents. I literally didn't even remember my mum had an older brother. So I'd just try to piece together their stories whenever they ranted to us about like how our other parent had ruined their life or something. Bits and pieces they'd shared with us over the years).
So I texted my dad about it (who I was thankfully far away from by then. Funnily enough this was one of our last conversations before I cut contact with him), and he said we were salvadorians 👍. So yeah.
But like. I feel so disconnected to my culture. I don't even know what our culture IS. And despite now living in a place with many latinos, I feel like I still can't get into it. Firstly because it would involve me interacting with people. But secondly (and most importantly) because I feel like interacting with latinos would just reveal to them how unlatino I am. I can't speak spanish. I know nothing about us.
One thing about it is that I feel like I have to learn Spanish before I'm allowed to try to engage. But learning a whole language takes so much time. And I don't like doing it because it reminds me that I don't already know it! And I *should*!
Oh well. Not like I could've learned it when I was younger, or in that house with my dad. I don't know why they didn't raise us bilingually. But it's not like I could've learned it when I was young either, my dad makes fun of my mum for her spanish (she spoke exclusively Spanish when she was younger, but had to learn English when she moved to the US at 8. She lost a lot of her Spanish since then), which would make me way too nervous to practice spanish and be bad at it at first with him around (he somehow didn't think that would impact us? He ended up wanting us to learn spanish, so good luck with that when you act like *that*).
Also. I keep worrying that I look white. I've always been light skinned, but until 8th grade I thought it was obvious I wasn't white?? But maybe not so. It's not like I can ask people.
In 8th grade the teacher briefly left the room and left me in charge of it (I was seen as the most responsible/trustworthy), so I made a joke about me turning out to be a dictator, to which someone joked about that being racist, to which I said "It's not racist, 'cus I'm not white" (in a manner that I *hoped* conveyed that I was *joking*, and that the joke was that poc can still definitely be racist (I mean c'mon just be around my dad, you'll see)).
And he just stared deadpan at me. I thought he confused me for white, so I kept reiterating that I wasn't, and he just stared and stared at me the whole time.
I realised later that maybe he thought I was being serious, and that was why he wasn't smiling, or maybe he just didn't think the joke was funny.
But like. I couldn't know. "Later" was actually quite a *while* later, so at that point I was already out of school at home all day, under the pretense of "homeschooling" (there was never any schooling).
I don't even know why it matters if I look white. There are plenty of latinos I know of that could pass as white, who I never doubt are latino. Ugh. I don’t know. This is an issue that could be solved by interacting with more latinos. In fact, all of these issues could be solved by hanging out with more latinos. I gotta get over myself sometime and realise that there are PLENTY of latinos who are disconnected from their culture and who don’t know spanish so it's FINE interacting with fellow latinos is FINE there's no way I can fail some sort of latino authenticity test. Whatever. Problems and solutions for later.
because I feel like interacting with latinos would just reveal to them how unlatino I am. I can't speak spanish. I know nothing about us.
hahh. sameee
This is an issue that could be solved by interacting with more latinos.
also same... UNFORTUNATE!
i getcha tho. and i also get the whole "not knowing what we are until i'm a teen" thing. ive always thought it was weird that my mom and dad know a ton about their own family histories but never really made much effort to impress it into us. EH oh well.

Daily prompt scribble til Dawntrail
From this prompt list that I saved and then accidentally forgot about again. Fond Memories
"In any case…" Alisaie stretched her arms and fell back into the hammock, "I suppose it is only natural to dwell on these things. Do you remember much of your town?" "Hmm, not really." 'Don't I?' T'renin's guilty conscience stirred as soon as the words had left his mouth. 'Did you forget your promise already?' "Sorry. That was a lie." His ears twitched in irritation, and he shifted to face away from his friend. "I just don't like thinking about it very much. It wasn't a good time, and my family deserves no place in my life." His voice hardened. "I don't want to talk about it."
Alisaie sighed. "Of course, I understand. I was just curious." A hand grabbed him gently by the shoulder. "But… forget about your family for a moment. You don't have to talk about them. Surely there were other people who were worth remembering?"
Again T'renin swallowed the impulse to respond with 'not really'. He wanted to brush the topic off, and Alisaie knew this. So why did she keep pressing the matter?
"This is one of your stupid smart schemes to work on my attitude, isn't it." "Actually", Alisaie countered, her tone indignant, "It's one of my stupid smart schemes called 'being your friend and wanting to know things about you'." He didn't have to turn back around to know she was glaring at him. He rolled his eyes. "Alright, fine." 'Let's just pick a random story and hope she moves on.'
He let his mind roam, firmly blocking out all the thoughts that led to his family. Allowing other faces to take their place, he was pleasantly surprised when a fair number of them sparked joyous recognition. Perhaps this task was doable after all. He pondered the memories for a moment, a wave of fondness washing over him.
"There was a bakery. Just two blocks away from our place." He closed his eyes, drawing up the image in his mind. A weathered brick house. Wind chimes that got knocked against the wall with every breeze, and a brass bell that matched their sound with every push of the aged wooden door. The scent of fresh bread beckoning the customers.
"The couple that owned it would always offer us children these tiny sugar cookies. Little stars and flowers and fish, with differently coloured icing. I remember getting absurdly excited whenever we went there. It's not every day that you get a free cookie, after all." He grinned.
"I'd ask for a fish cookie, every time. 'Til one day I asked if I could have another one, y'know, just because. And when we got home… well, dad yelled at me. Told me to stop begging folks for hand-outs, and something about bad manners. A complete overreaction of course." T'renin sighed. "He'd never have gotten mad if my brother had done it. But I was scared he'd shout at me again, so I stopped saying yes to the cookies."
His ears drooped for a moment, and Alisaie hissed. "Your dad's a jerk." T'renin smirked. His friend's outburst was enough to ward off the dread that had threatened to creep up on him at the mention of his father.
"Aye. That he is. But get this-" He winked. "It wasn't exactly a secret that he was a jerk. So of course, when I kept pretending I didn't want cookies, the baker caught on. And boy, the performance!"
He stifled a giggle as he remembered the scene. The portly old baker in his flour-stained apron, raising his voice in a scandalized tone. "'You don't like my cookies any more? But I thought you loved them! No more little red fishies for the little redhead? What's wrong with them?' All that with the saddest, most heartbroken look on his face."
T'renin broke off as Alisaie laughed, realizing too late he'd subconsciously imitated the baker's gestures, his fist theatrically clutching his chest as he spoke.
"Ahem… Anyway! At that point everyone is watching. The good man stares down at the cookie platter like his world is in shambles, and it's very clear he doesn't want us to leave without handing me one. So what's dad gonna do, eh? He can't shoo me out of there without my cookie, it would offend the business. So he sighs and tells me to stop being rude and take one. And from that day on, me and my fish cookies lived happily ever after!" He snapped his fingers triumphantly.
Alisaie crossed her arms, a smile tugging on the corners of her mouth. "Well well! I'm glad to hear someone shall be spared my wrath if our adventures ever take us to your old doorstep. …Only if they still offer us fish cookies, of course." T'renin suppressed a snort. "Of course. Though now that I know the true purpose of your inquiry… perhaps I should expand on my list of people you must spare." He poked her nose. "You win this one." 'You and your stupid smart scheme of being a good friend.'

Yoonoh woke up on a strange bed, the mattress stiffer than the one he had back home. He refused to open his eyes, fearing that the daylight would worsen his headache.
Yoonoh woke up on a strange bed, the mattress stiffer than the one he had back home. He refused to open his eyes, fearing that the daylight would worsen his headache.
“Wake up, sunshine.” He groaned, all the memories from the past night hitting him like a truck. “Come on, I made breakfast.”
His eyelids finally fluttered open, frown softening at the sight of you in a messy bun and your cute pajamas.
“How come you look so fresh?” The dark circles under his eyes had deepened in the span of a few hours. Thank God he didn't have to work that day.
“I always look fresh.” You seemed to be more comfortable around him. Perhaps it was because you had to tuck him in last night. “Up.”
You tugged both of his limp hands, forcing him to sit up.
“What did you cook? It smells nice.” He scrunched up his nose like a little kid.
“Eggs, bacon, and hash browns.” Fast as lightning, he got up from bed. On his way to the kitchen, he noticed the blanket hanging from the edge of your sofa. Disappointment pinched his heart.
“Why didn't you sleep with me? You would've been more comfortable.”
You set two plates on the small table, pulling the pan out of the stove to serve them.
“You spread yourself all over the bed as soon as I laid you down.” You lied successfully. You didn’t have the heart to tell him you weren’t that comfortable yet.
You let the pan down on the kitchen counter, taking a seat in front of him.
“Do you still want to visit my father?” Sparkling orbs stared at him timidly, fearing his answer would be negative.
“I mean…” You hummed, trying not to give it as much importance. “I do want to go!” He quickly corrected himself, frantically shaking his hands. “It’s just that I don't want to meet your father like this.” He pointed at his bed hair, which had only become messier since he woke up.
“You’re acting like he's gonna see you.” There was a slight bitterness in your tone, along with a fake grin.
“Alright, let's do this instead...” Yoonoh sat up straight, clearing his throat as if he were about to give a speech. “We’ll have breakfast, you'll shower quickly, and then we’ll drive to my house so I can fix myself. How does that sound?”
“So I'm finally gonna see your mansion? How exciting.” You kicked his leg teasingly under the table, his cheeks inevitably dipping as he tried to suppress a smile. “I bet you have some peacocks in your backyard.”
“And there's also a dolphin in my pool.” He let out a hearty laugh, extending his arm over the table to grab your hand.
His house was most definitely not what you expected.
It was about the size of the one you grew up in, the decoration inside minimalistic. There were no expensive paintings framed with pure gold, only pictures of him and his family. There was a small backyard you could access through the French door in the kitchen. Half of it was occupied by a greenhouse.
“I had to donate the peacocks to the zoo.” He whispered as you looked through the glass door, squeezing your shoulders with his slim fingers.
“What a shame.” Hesitantly, he wrapped both of his limbs around your torso, letting his chin rest stop of your head. Your heartbeat was thumping loudly against your chest. Yoonoh surely felt it but decided not to comment on it.
“There’s a Tv in my room in case you want to watch something while I shower.” A hint of mischief adorned his honey-like voice. “Or you can come in and watch me instead.”
“Stop!” Your elbow connected with his ribs out of pure panic, making him bend in pain with his hands covering the injured spot.
“It was a joke...” He whispered, teeth gritting together.
I made him mad, you thought. Should you escape or face the consequences of his anger? All thoughts erased from your mind as he grabbed your calves, lifting you over his shoulder.
“Put me down!” You hit his back with closed fists, unable to see the expression on his face. “Yoonoh!”
He went up the stairs, proceeding to enter his room and throw you on his bed. Thousands of dirty scenarios crossed your mind before he threw himself on top of you, crushing your bones under his muscular body.
“My...ribs...”
“Oh, sorry, what is that?” To make matters worse, his fingers tickled your sides, provoking a fit of desperate giggles to escape your mouth. “I’m not hearing an apology.”
“Sorry! Sorry!” His hands finally stopped, giving you time to breathe. Nonetheless, he remained laid on your chest, using his forearms to lift his weight. “Aren’t you gonna shower?”
“I like you.”
The confession was so sudden, so raw it took you some time to finally react. But you had no words to give him an answer, instead, you combed your fingers through his long hair, massaging his scalp while waiting for him to speak up again.
“I never thought I'd be feeling more than friendly affection for you. Our agreement doesn't include love, after all. But I've started feeling like a teenager all over again. I can't help but get excited whenever you call me. Do you know how sweet your voice sounds through the phone?” He sighed, discouraged at your lack of response. “I guess you're not there yet.”
Instead of verbally answering, you planted a sweet kiss on his head, right where small, grey hairs had started growing.
“I’m not good with words.”
“That’s alright.” He snuck his hands under your back, holding you tightly as a sudden need to nurture you took over him. The mature image he had of you faded in less than a second, leaving behind a young, troubled woman. “I’ll shower quickly so we can go see your pops. I bet we’ll get along just fine, maybe even go golfing when he wakes up.”
“I forgot you're almost the same age. Creepy.” He smiled, though uneasiness started steering in his guts.
“Does that bother you?” He asked without giving it a second thought.
“I don't know yet.”
(...)
The man with high cheekbones and bruised skin laid limp on the hospital bed. Yoonoh had been working on his case for about a month, yet, it only started feeling real the moment he entered the room.
“This is my dad.” All emotions had escaped your eyes as if your soul wasn't there anymore. Only an empty shell.
“You look so much like him.” he was afraid touching you wouldn't be the right thing to do, so instead, he said: “He seems like a suitable golf buddy.”
Tension finally loosened its grip around his body as you snorted, pigment returning to your cheeks. Finally, he wrapped his hand around yours.
“He will wake up, y/n.”
“He’s taking his sweet time.” You glanced back at the laying figure, skinnier with every day he spent asleep. “I want someone to pay for taking away the last person that loved me.”
The last person that loved you. Would Yoonoh be able to fill that spot? Not yet, probably. He couldn't modify the depth of his feelings, but he could surely give you the vengeance you longed.
“Do you trust me?” With your eyes still glued to your father, you nodded. “Then I can assure you we’ll win the case.”
“I know we will.”
He sat silently with you, holding your hand without saying a word. The smell of alcohol and the beeping noise of machines made him nauseous. He hated hospitals. You noticed the change in his demeanor, his hand becoming cold while holding yours with strength.
“Do you wanna go?”
“No!” He smiled through the pain, scooting his chair closer to lay your hand on his lap.
He wouldn't agree to get his ass off the plastic chair. You had to tell him you were hungry for him to finally stand up, still clutching your hand like your father did when you were still a kid. His parental behavior caused several emotions to stir inside your guts, so mixed up you couldn't quite put a finger on any of them.
“What do you want to eat?” The tension finally left his body once out of the building.
“Soup.” You smiled while swiping your thumb on top of his knuckles. “I know a place, but to be honest, it isn't good. So we can go to the store and get the ingredients to- but you can't cook.”
“I’m up for a cooking lesson if you are.” He wanted to see your pretty smile again. Maybe making a fool of himself would help. “Let’s hit the road.”
“Wow, so cool.”
“I know.”
(...)
“Can you grab that can of chicken broth?” You pointed at the high shelf, letting go of Yoonoh’s hand to allow him to move freely
“I have a better idea.” He dragged you by the arm so you were standing in front of him, trapped between his body and the shelf. “I’ll lift you so you can reach it.” Matching his words, his hands grasped your waist, ready to carry you.
“Stop!” You slapped his hands repeatedly between giggles. Ignoring your complaints, he started lifting you. “Yoonoh!”
“Yoonoh?” A feminine voice had him placing you back on your feet in less than a second.
“Seryeong, I didn't expect to see you here.” His hands remained seated on the curve of your waist.
“Neither did I. I was surprised when Sungchan told me you'd left early yesterday.” She seemed a bit older than you but still younger than the man behind you.
“I had some matters to take care of.” She eyed you from head to toes with a smug grin plastered on her lips. Just by the look of her clothes, you could tell she was as wealthy as Yoonoh. You feared the scene would turn into a tv worthy drama.
“I’ll go get the chicken breast.” You tried escaping his grip, only to be pulled closer to his warmth.
“No need to. It's already inside the cart.”
Why am I so dumb?
“Does your father know about your little girlfriend?” She asked without hesitation.
“I guess.”
“And why didn't he tell me anything?” She cocked an eyebrow, his hands finally loosening around your body and allowing you to move from your position.
“Look, this is something you should talk about with him. Now, if you excuse us...” With a hand on your shoulder, he began pushing the cart to the next aisle, the chicken broth long forgotten.
“Is this some kind of arranged marriage situation?”
“Something like that.” His hands were tense while holding the cart, knuckles turning white from the strength used. “Before you start asking, I'm not really in the mood and I don't want to direct my bad mood toward you. Let's talk about something else, alright?”
Who was that woman that had the power to turn him into a literal raging ball of fire with just a few words?

Soul Surfer 6
Tumblr media
AN: SURPRISE BITCHES chapter 6 came early!!! we get some cute Kie/Sarah/Violet action in this as well as some John B/Violet! we stan healthy platonic relationships!!
ALSO: i can’t tag anymore people 😭 i’ve reached the 50 tags limit! if anyone has any suggestions to tag more people, dm me!!
It had been around five days since Violet had spoken to JJ. Kiara made sure that the girl still knew that her, John B and Pope still wanted her around. They weren’t about to give up two friends because JJ was being an idiot.
Kiara knew that Violet was worried that they’d stop hanging out with her because JJ was their best friend. But to Kiara, Violet was also her best friend. In such a short amount of time too.
Violet had been throwing herself into work, all of the orders keeping her mind busy from wandering to JJ. Which it often did most nights and then she resorted to watching true crime shows on Netflix as a distraction.
JJ wasn’t doing any better. He kept trying to get her to talk to him so he could apologize but it was no use. Violet wouldn’t budge. He hated not being able to see her and to talk to her. He had to go back to sleeping at John B’s whenever he was afraid to go home. Of course he was grateful he had a place to go, but he wanted it to be Violet.
Violet hadn’t seen Pope and John B since the night at the Boneyard. She didn’t want them picking sides between her and JJ. It would have made her feel more guilty than she already did.
Kiara and Sarah, however, made sure they stuck by her like glue. Violet couldn’t seem to shake them but she didn’t mind at all.
Violet, Sarah and Kiara were presently at The Wreck having a well needed girls day.
“Okay, okay, Vi. If you had to choose: Harry Styles or Tom Holland?” Sarah asked. “That’s not fair! It’s like asking me to pick a favorite child!” Violet replied. Kiara and Sarah laughed at the girl’s response as she pondered the thought.
“Okay, fine. Harry Styles. Any day of the week.” Violet answered. The three girls sat at their table, falling into mindless conversation about boys and clothes, just happy they were able to spend time together, when the bell on top of the door rang.
Their attention was grabbed by the sound. Violet’s heartbeat sped up rapidly when her eyes landed on the blonde boy.
“Vi, I didn’t know he’d be here.” Kiara said quietly. “It’s fine.” Violet said, fidgeting with the rings on her fingers.
“Hey guys! You didn’t tell us you were hanging out today.” John B greeted the three. “Last time I checked this is girls day. Which you are not.” Kiara sassed back.
Violet refused to look up at her friend as they conversed with each other. She could feel JJ’s eyes on her and it made her skin feel on fire.
It was starting to slowly overwhelm her and she heard JJ utter a few words, she quickly got up from her chair and exited the establishment. Sarah and Kiara looked at each other before JJ followed after her.
“Violet!” He called. Violet didn’t stop walking, not wanting to face him. “Please talk to me.” JJ begged, grabbing her arm gently. “I told you to leave me alone.” Violet said, ripping her arm from his grasp.
She still refused to look at him, knowing that if she did, she’d actually end up listening to his potential apology.
“God, can you at least look at me?” He asked. Violet paused a moment before she finally looked up at him.
Only then did he see how upset she really was. At the Boneyard, the darkness hid her face and he silently wished for that again.
“What do you wanna say, JJ? You’re sorry? Sorry for what you said? You wish you could take it all back? Well you can’t! I trusted you. I didn’t tell anyone about my mom and you decided to use that against me.” Violet snapped. “Violet, I,” JJ started before the brunette scoffed and turned away.
JJ was persistent, however, going after Violet once more in another desperate attempt to get her to listen to him.
“I screwed up! I know that! I was mad at Rafe for what he said and instead of finishing to take it out on him, I took it out on you and I’m sorry!” JJ said.
Violet rolled her eyes and kept ignoring him by the time they approached her house.
“Please, JJ, just stop.” She pleaded quietly. JJ could see the hurt in her eyes. How her once bright, cerulean blue eyes were now a darker shade. He would describe it as how the ocean looked during a storm. And he wanted nothing more than to stop her pain.
Before either of them could continue with the painful conversation, the sound of raised voices alerted them both.
“Vivienne, you need to leave now.” Rob’s voice said. JJ watched as Violet’s eyes widened and the color seemingly drained from her face. “She’s my daughter too, Rob.” A woman said.
The two ‘adults’ walked on to the porch and their conversation ceased when they saw Violet and JJ.
“Violet, honey,” Vivienne started. “No. No, this is not happening.” She muttered. “What the fuck are you doing here?” Violet sneered. “Language, young lady.” Her mother scolded her. “You lost the right to tell me what to do when you gave up your parental rights!” Violet yelled.
“Vi, it’s okay.” Her older brother, Nick, said. Violet looked at her brother in disbelief at the fact that he was defending their mother.
Nick was three years older than Violet, the two being inseparable since Violet was born. That was until their mother took him and left. When Nick was old enough, he reached back out to Violet and their father trying to rebuild that bond they once shared. It worked for the most part though Violet never told Nick where they moved to.
“Both of you shut up.” Violet snapped. She turned around quickly when she realized JJ was still standing close to her. “You were right. Guess I am a sad little rich girl with mommy issues.” She muttered to him before she took off running.
“Violet!” Rob yelled. “Vi!” JJ added. The two males looked at each other momentarily before their gaze returned to Violet’s fleeting figure.
__
“You shouldn’t have come here, Vivienne. You knew what this would do to her.” Rob told his ex wife. “She’s still my child. I have a right.” Vivienne said. “You lost your right when you left! You signed away your parental rights to Violet the second you signed the divorce papers.” Rob yelled.
The room fell in a silence, though that didn’t stop the two teenage boys from eavesdropping on the porch.
“It’s been 10 years. 10 years and I’ve taken care of Violet just fine. We have been just fine.” Rob added.
Back on the porch, JJ and Nick sat on sides from each other. “So, you Violet’s boyfriend?” Nick asked, breaking the silence. “God, I wish.” JJ muttered before quickly correcting himself.
“Uh, no. We’re just friends. Or at least we were before I messed it up.” He added. Nick was quiet for a moment as he moved to lean on the porch railing.
“Take it from me, losing Violet sucks. But, if you beg and plead enough, she’ll let you back in.” He said. “Did you tell your mom Violet and Rob were here?” JJ asked. “God, no. Violet didn’t even tell me. Just because I’m back in her good graces doesn’t mean she tells me everything.” the older boy answered.
JJ thought for a moment until he realized he might know where Violet went.
On one of the many adventures JJ and Violet had together, JJ took her to a secret clearing he once discovered when he was running from his dad.
“Where are you taking me?” Violet asked with a laugh. “You ask too many questions.” JJ answered. “I’ve seen Criminal Minds, is this where you kill me?” She questioned. “No, pretty girl. I couldn’t survive without seeing that face every day.” JJ replied flirtatiously.
Violet rolled her eyes until they came upon a clearing in the woods. There was a small waterfall that went into a small pond below. “Wow, it’s beautiful.” She commented.
“That’s not the only thing.” JJ said, hoping Violet wouldn’t hear him but she did. “I know how you’ve been missing home so I thought this would help.” The blonde said.
Violet looked up at JJ before she wrapped her arms around him. “Thank you.” Violet whispered.
JJ knew Violet wouldn’t want him to be the one to find her, so he sent a text to the rest of the Pogues.
Kie had to work, as did Pope, and Sarah was dealing with her own messed up familial issues. John B was the only one able to go find Violet. JJ trusted him to talk her off whatever edge she found herself on.
The boy wandered through the woods, following JJ’s instructions, though the teenager wasn’t so good at giving directions. He swatted at the numerous bugs getting in his face when he found the clearing.
He saw Violet sitting on a rock, her feet dangling in the water. “Fancy seeing you here.” John B announced.
Violet turned around and saw her distant friend standing a few feet away. “How’d you find me?” She asked. “JJ. He figured you wouldn’t want to see him but he wanted to make sure you were okay.” John B explained, walking towards her.
He sat down on the rock next to her as the two looked at the waterfall for a moment.
“Did he tell you what happened?” Violet asked. “No. He told me some family stuff was going on and wanted someone to check on you. Said it was your story to tell.” He answered.
Violet sighed as she ran a hand through her hair. “He’s really trying, isn't he?” She asked him. “He really likes you, Vi. He’s never fallen this hard before and I don’t think he knows how to handle it. But yeah, he really is trying.” John Be said.
After an hour, John B drove Violet back home. By that point, the sun had set and it was already dark.
Violet sat in the van, staring at her house for a moment. Scared of what she was going to walk into. “It’s now or never.” John B told her. “And I’ll tell JJ you’re okay.” He added.
The girl groaned before getting out of the van. She gave John B a small wave as she slowly walked up the stairs.
“You’re back.” A voice said. Violet jumped and turned in that direction to see her brother sitting on the porch swing. Violet sighed and took a seat next to him.
“That guy was here for a while. At least two hours. We heard mom and dad fighting about you.” Nick said. “He really cares about you.” He added.
“So I’ve been told.” She muttered. “You sticking around?” She asked. “That’s why I’m here. I’m getting emancipated and I needed dad to sign off on the papers and mom followed me here. When I caught on she said it had something to do with getting us back or whatever. She’s crazy.” Nick explained.
“Tell me something I don’t know. So can I count on you to help me get rid of her?” Violet asked. “What are brothers for?” NIck replied.
Violet rested her head on her brother’s shoulder, her brain working a mile a minute.

Rio: Yeah Rio: I will make it happen, just not right right now Rio: not the first impression you wanna make, is it Buster: It's the impression I wanna leave you with though Rio: Danger, yeah? Buster: Yeah Rio: You're gonna be the death of me, you know Buster: You can't get to heaven without that, baby Rio: Didn't say don't do it Rio: don't stop Buster: I won't if you don't Buster: Come on Rio: Was I meant to tell you when I came? Rio: 'cos I have, multiple times Buster: All the more reason to keep going Buster: Unless your new boyfriend is back, like Rio: I thought you might go if you knew I had Rio: and I don't want you to Buster: I don't want to Buster: This is boring, you're not Rio: I never am Rio: that's a promise I can make, easy Buster: Good Buster: Prove it then Rio: Alright Rio: your sound is off, yeah? Buster: What kind of amateur do you think I am? Rio: Not tryna get you into that much trouble before you even start there Rio: save that for later Rio: and watch this later when you can listen too for the full experience Rio: [vid] Buster: I have headphones I'll do it now Buster: Hold on Rio: Okay Buster: Oh fuck Buster: You really are proving yourself, aren't you? Rio: You must look so fucking good right now Rio: how has no one noticed Buster: Maybe someone has Buster: I'll find out when we're forced to do icebreakers later Rio: Lemme know, babe Buster: Are you sure you wanna? Rio: What you mean? Rio: Oh wow, so nice of you to stoop to my level Buster: It ain't my fault you're trying so hard not to be on mine Rio: Whatever, like Buster: You're not working class, like Rio: You're the one chatting that I am Buster: 'Cause you try so hard to be Buster: Only when it suits you though Rio: Do I Rio: well ain't that exactly what you applaud yourself for Rio: adapting and overcoming, all that bullshit Buster: 'Cause that's what I do Buster: You think you can have your cake, eat it & then judge me for my fucking choices Rio: It isn't judging you to point out when you're being a dick Buster: A snob is a pejorative term Buster: & Yet you're the one thinking you're superior to me 'cause you chat council but spend like you're from Chelsea Rio: Are you serious? Rio: Oh my God Rio: you said I can't read and I'm lucky you give me the time of day Rio: if that's how I'm meant to behave 'cos my parents have money then I'd rather fake it the other way, thanks Buster: Nah, I said my sister can't & she must be loving your shit school Buster: Which is how you've described it loads of times Buster: You're smart, don't be stupid Rio: Have you asked her yourself Rio: as you're so interested Buster: Why are you asking me a question you already know the answer to? Buster: I said, don't be stupid Rio: Prove a point Buster: What's your point? She don't wanna talk to me, that's been proven loads of times Rio: Are you trying Buster: Trying to what, change her mind? Buster: Why would I wanna Rio: Because you wanna talk to her, obviously Buster: I don't Rio: Alright Buster: Is it? Or do you wanna judge me for that as well? Rio: Oh shut up Buster: Don't tell me to shut up Rio: I will Rio: you've called me stupid plenty of times, you've earnt it Buster: You've been stupid, you aren't Buster: That's why it's frustrating Rio: I'm not a child Buster: Don't be childish then Rio: I'd quit whilst you were vaguely ahead if I were you Buster: I'm not a quitter, babe. You've got the wrong twin Rio: Do you want to talk about her or not? Buster: I'm not talking about her, I'm talking about me Rio: Sure Rio: that's what your icebreakers are for Buster: I'll go do 'em then Buster: You've made your point Rio: Okay Rio: Enjoy then Buster: I'll do my best Rio: No doubt Buster: Shouldn't be Rio: You're arguing for the sake of now Buster: You're winding me up for the sake of Rio: I'm not that bored Rio: busy, busy Buster: Then stop Buster: Or fuck off Buster: One or the other Rio: If that's what you want Buster: It's what I said Rio: I said go have fun Buster: Fine Rio: Don't be moody Buster: Don't make me Rio: I ain't done anything Buster: Bullshit Buster: You're always doing something Buster: I miss you Rio: you think I don't miss you too Rio: I miss you loads, actually and it's fucking Buster: I want you so bad Buster: I can't do this Buster: Months of it Rio: There's no alternative though Rio: we have to Buster: I know, fuck's sake, I know Buster: I'm just jetlagged or whatever Buster: Forget it Rio: Yeah Rio: sure, fine by me Buster: It is fine & I can do anything Rio: I never said you couldn't Rio: it'll be alright Buster: I'll cum in this classroom again & get over it Buster: Who else am I, like? Rio: Buster, it's okay Rio: it's a totally new experience, it's fine to feel overwhelmed, doesn't mean you won't ace it Buster: Don't Rio: Okay Rio: but it's true Buster: It's not, there is no out of my depth Rio: Not the word I used Rio: and not what I meant Rio: moving and starting something new is hectic Rio: even if you can handle it Buster: Like I said, I thrive under pressure Buster: There's nothing I can't handle Rio: Exactly, they wouldn't have chosen you otherwise, would they Buster: I know you think I just paid my way here Rio: No I don't Buster: If I think I'm better, it's 'cause I am Buster: 'Cause I put in the work to be Rio: Literally never tried to take that away from you Rio: just saying you don't have to call me or your sister thick to prove that Rio: there's plenty of proof already, yeah? Buster: I'd never call you thick 'cause I'm never wrong Buster: You're really smart Rio: You don't need to do that now Rio: like you said, you work hard Rio: I don't Buster: You can still do anything Buster: Whatever you want Buster: Just like I can Rio: I know Rio: just priorities Rio: not everyone wants the same shit Buster: There's no limits, that's all I'm saying Buster: Nance ain't the same Buster: She's never been Rio: I'm sure she still has plans Buster: She has to, she may have left but there's no escaping mum & dad Buster: It's not the same as being self motivated Rio: No Rio: but maybe she's alright with that Rio: or maybe she ain't Rio: but what can you do Rio: self-motivation for a reason, like Buster: She does what she does to please them, I do what I do to please myself Buster: There's plenty I could do if she let me Rio: She'll find her thing Buster: Not if she keeps jacking everything in as soon as it gets hard Rio: That's not what leaving London was about Rio: come on Buster: Yeah it was Buster: She gave up Rio: She was being really badly bullied Rio: nothing is worth living like that day in day out Rio: especially if you don't even want it for yourself Buster: She let it get to that Rio: She couldn't control that Rio: that's on the people who were doing it Buster: She could've Buster: Just take it back from them Rio: Just take it, you mean Rio: she's not you, is she Buster: No, just stop it Buster: There's a way to stop anything Rio: Not be gay, not be shy, not be herself Rio: she could've but maybe she was over not having anything she wanted Rio: if she's already got to live for your parents in one way, why live for people who would still probably hate her anyway as well Buster: Those are all excuses, they did it to her 'cause they could. Simple as Rio: There's obvious reasons why they picked on her and not you, alright Rio: and I'm sorry but no, just being strong would not stop it Rio: nothing is about you is a target where you live, you can't get it Rio: you fit, she didn't Buster: They'd pick on me if I was a pussy Buster: But I made myself fit Rio: Well she didn't want to then, can be simple as that Buster: You think I wanted to day 1 when we moved there? Buster: Fuck that Rio: I'm sure you didn't Rio: she needed an out and she took the first she could Rio: you're working for yours Buster: She didn't work for hers Buster: She never works for anything Rio: She went through a lot of shit, though Buster: Woe's her then Rio: I'm just saying Buster: Look where you are & what for Buster: Everyone's going through it Buster: She ain't special Rio: Yeah, of course Rio: I'm not saying she's the only one who has or is going through bullshit Rio: I know you did too Buster: I didn't & don't mean me Buster: I'm not struggling, never have done Buster: Like you said, obvious reasons Rio: You want me to agree like I believe that? Rio: Reasons you just had different problems Rio: rich boys aren't exempt, they just get lots less sympathy for theirs Buster: There ain't no reason for you to disagree or disbelieve Buster: I can barely play the dead brother card 'cause he weren't one Buster: Got not even a day's mileage out of that Rio: You're not allowed to talk about it, I remember Buster: There's nothing to talk about anyway, he's just a name, didn't get to be anything else Rio: He existed for 9 months before that Rio: I know it doesn't start the day they pop out Buster: Not to me, I was a kid, what did I care? Buster: That's my mum's grief not mine Rio: You weren't that young Buster: A lad then, what does it matter Rio: You were allowed to grieve Rio: you still are Buster: Like I said, for what? Buster: It ain't as if I'm an only child Rio: For what he coulda been, who Buster: That'd be like grieving for who I reckon my sister should be Buster: Not gonna have a candlelit vigil for her backbone Rio: You can do Rio: think it's considered a bit insensitive to hold a funeral for her 'just 'cos she's not gonna have the husband and 2.5 kids these days but I'll keep it on the dl Buster: We don't know who he would've been & we never will Buster: It's a waste of time Rio: Yeah Rio: It's a big waste of time and you can't do anything about it Buster: Why do you want me to be powerless? Like is that a turn on for you or what? Buster: I don't want your fucking pity, alright Rio: I don't and no it's not Rio: I told you, you won't get any Buster: Good Buster: Maybe you reckon I should be fucked up but I ain't Buster: Gutted to burst your bubble though Rio: Why would I want that Buster: You tell me Rio: I don't Rio: so I've got no idea Buster: Then stop chatting like I have all these issues Rio: I just said you can Rio: not that you do Buster: Well, cheers for your permission in that case Rio: Any time Buster: I have to go Rio: Okay then Rio: talk to you later Buster: Yeah
