Just read a fic where there was a magnitude 6.2 (or somewhere around there) earthquake that apparently went on for a while and everyone was kinda just chill about it like "huh, was that an earthquake?" and I am going insane. What do you mean no one dropped, covered, held?? What do you mean it was 6.2 and went on for a while and no one was freaking out??? Any earthquake that goes on for long enough should be somewhat concerning!! A 6.2 for any amount of time should be somewhat concerning!! And a 6.2 that goes on for a while should most definitely concern you!! You would know it was an earthquake!! And if you didn't have experience with earthquakes a 6.2 would definitely be enough to make you consider finding a safe spot!! Like how deep was this quake that a bunch of people not used to them reacted so chill to a 6.2??
#my credentials are that I've grown up being taught how to react to earthquakes and I live in a city that gets them fairly regularly#would I immediately drop under a desk for a 6.2? maybe not. but if it went on for a bit I would! the first jolt at that strength would make#me consider it!#also this fic was apparently set somewhere that doesn't get many earthquakes and they got a 6.2 and there wasn't much concern??#no aftershocks or anything??#some more context: the absolutely devastating christchurch quake in 2011 was a 6.3. yes that was technically an aftershock of the 7.1 from a#few months before so all the smaller ones between would've probably weakened things. sure. but 6.3 is BIG. especially if it keeps going!!#like for the quake in this fic to be 6.2 AND for it to also be realistic how everyone responded it must have been deep as hell!
