ok ok ok. a post about josh, buck, and maddie at dispatch as promised. (and because i dont feel like writing a whole separate post or repeating myself etc, if im pointing something out as evidence for my autistic josh headcanon, it'll be in parenthesis like this) also this is long because im going basically line by line in some places so just be prepared for that and such.
the first thing i wanna say before anything else is that like... as far as how this conversation fits into the larger narrative, i was fairly disappointed, due to the way that including this scene like this is kinda implying that the racism was fine because of being closeted etc. HOWEVER. luckily for my sanity it is pretty clear that from a character perspective, that's not at all what's being said by josh himself here, and we can be pretty certain that he is not aware of tommy's past behaviors. in fact he has almost no facts or context about the situation, which i'll get into later.
now that the disclaimer is out of the way, im gonna move onto character analysis and will not be touching on what i think the narrative might have meant etc. any further. like this is going to be purely talking about character dynamics and dissecting the dialogue etc.
we start out right away by skipping all the exposition right into a hard cut of maddie reacting to the news that tommy and abby were engaged. LOVE this set up we get right into the important part quickly and we as the audience only have to hear information that is new to us, not the information being repeated back to the character for whom the information is new.
and oh maddie. i love you so bad. she's like DAMN thats crazy, and then makes the obvious turning people gay joke. her energy here is sooo like it didn't make sense until looking at it in retrospect, but she's shocked and invested yet not taking it very seriously as a concern for buck, because well, she's having a baby and this is objectively not that serious comparatively <3 but i do love that she sees buck's reaction and quickly reins it in and is like woah im kidding im not actually being homophobic holy smokes. which. it kinda still is a little. but i think she's allowed <3
and then... josh enters the scene. he apparently only walked in as buck was saying "-kissed a boy" so of course he had to be like huh? gay shit? something gay? boys?? what's going on over here? and i love that for him. and i love that maddie immediately is like oh hi bestie i catch u up to speed on the tea <3 the maddiejosh bestieism is so back we never lose <3 and that fact that she's like. feeding in the facts in a way to dramatically amp up the tale i love it. she really said man the things my baby brother gets himself caught up in are wild.... anyway <3 true sibling behavior is finding the perfect balance between being supportive and being so so annoying <3
and she is supportive still. like when it becomes clear that there's something deeper going on here she does try to help him work through it. and its so interesting to me the way she is sort of seriously contemplating his words and is shocked when josh not only speaks up but is being very serious and equally focused on the problem at hand. it's like... she's trying so hard to figure out how to help her brother with something she doesn't fully understand that having someone else speak up to help them kind of shocks her and boy does that say something about their lives and the buckley sibling dynamic!
side note, the way josh is jokingly like "she didn't bring her personal life to work, unlike SOME people" and maddie's little look of mock offense?? they're so cute i cant handle it.
i also really love how the shots are framed during this conversation. at first, even when she's not talking and is just listening to josh talk, maddie is still in frame, we're still getting her reaction, she's an active participant in what's going on. and then there is the one shot where she's talking and josh is out of frame, hidden by buck, because whatever reaction he might be having isn't important, it's a buckley sibling moment. (he's not an active participant at that point; he's entirely observing and reacting and gathering information, not dictating the direction of the conversation whatsoever.)
it's only when josh gets very serious and it starts to turn into a heart to heart moment just between him and buck that maddie is allowed to leave the frame. it still goes back to her in very brief cuts when her reaction is relevant, but she steps back out of focus and let's josh handle the conversation. and i love that so much. thank GOD someone else is helping buck sort out his problems that isn't his parentified sister or just generally someone more marginalized than him. it was kind of getting irritating to watch, as much as i love buck so much. like dude... the emotional labor. watch it.
and man. this conversation guys. everything about it makes me an insane crazy person. ive already mentioned this in the tags of some other posts but like... its so fascinating because on the surface it is such a cohesive conversation, but when you really break it down and analyze both of their expressions and body language alongside what they're saying, you can start to see the cracks in it. what one of them is saying is not what the other one is hearing, in both directions. they are having two different conversations and i think it's critical to analyze both of those conversations and how they are interacting with each other. what josh says, what josh hears, what buck says, and what buck hears are four entirely separate things happening alongside each other.
the first part is josh trying to get a sense for how serious this relationship is to buck. when buck falters at the question of "do you love him?", he elaborates with follow-up questions that, to josh, define "love" or close enough to it. answering "yes" to those questions is close enough to a "yes" to the question of "do you love him?".
(which. ok. the particular choice of questions makes me insane because they do essentially boil down to "do you prefer this person to solitude and grant them an equal or greater importance to yourself?" which is sooo... it's said from the point of view of someone who greatly values their solitude and would not easily grant someone that level of importance.)
unfortunately, well, buck is NOT someone who greatly values his solitude, and puts other people before himself quite easily. buck would answer "yes" to those questions for basically anyone. josh does not know or understand this about buck and takes buck's answers at face value, while buck is taking this as sort of... it's hard to explain, and i think others have done a better job of capturing buck's perspective already tbh. he's convincing himself that he loves tommy here because josh is unknowingly handing him that information and expectation, and buck loves to mold himself to fit an expectation etc.
and then comes the second part, which... i think this is where it is most critical to realize that josh has none of the context about tommy, abby, and buck and those respective relationships. by his own admission, he didn't really know much about abby or about her breakup with tommy beyond the fact that it was upsetting. he didn't hear the way tommy talked about abby to buck at dinner, and he definitely didn't get to see any of the real fallout and damage to her psyche that tommy leaving her caused.
but buck did! im not inclined to rewatch s1 to get any exact quotes or anything but from what i remember, she either outright said or implied that she was so heartbroken because tommy left her because of her mother's illness. buck is understandably very upset because he understands exactly what she went through and how, unless abby was lying to not out him, he didn't exactly come clean with the breakup, and left her feeling like it was her fault, like there was something wrong with her or she was being weighed down by caring for her mother. he calls tommy's behavior exactly what it is: dishonest and cruel.
but josh doesn't know this. all he is hearing is a young, freshly out bisexual calling a gay man "dishonest and cruel" for having been engaged to a woman for his own protection. and he responds exactly how you'd expect! he reminds him of queer history and the fact that he doesn't really have a right to judge the people who grew up and had to survive in a world that was much less safe to come out in.
(and i said in my other post that's still doing numbers that "pre-Glee/post-Glee" is an actual queer discourse talking point and makes sense that it'd be used here, as awkward and cheesy as it seems, but it's also a win for my television/film/popular media/hollywood culture/etc. as a special interest headcanon. <3 we love to see it)
and it kills me because of course buck is just going to take this at face value and decide he needs to stop feeling the discomfort he's feeling, leading to the subsequent doubling down and over committing that is typical of his unhealthy relationship patterns.
(and then at the end of the speech josh has to literally announce that he's leaving DSJFHJKDSKJ. because walking away/ending conversations is so awkward and difficult and the easiest way to mitigate that is to lean into the Dramatic Homosexual Stereotype mask or whatever <3 i've long been of the opinion that josh is someone who uses the behaviors associated with queer men and queer masculinity as the blueprint for his neurotypical mask, which is why he often comes across as being just a little bit off from the Funny and Bitchy Gay vibes that it seems like he's going for. and boy did his exit from this scene just reinforce that headcanon so hard!)
they wrap the scene with a little bit more levity too which is kind of nice to like. move on from that. because it got kind of heavy there for a second.
overall i do like what this scene accomplished, but like i said at the start, i think it has some really unfortunate implications that weigh it down for me. still, always nice to get more josh content, especially when it's pretty consistent with his character as established AND not at all related to doing his job. we got to see him and maddie being goofy and maddie being allowed to let someone else deal with buck's problems for a second. and the whole thing was very well shot! excellent camera work going on throughout.
i don't actually know how to end this post so yknow. im gonna make a dramatic exit now or whatever <3
#my posts#911 spoilers#911 meta#911 abc#911 season 8#911 season 8 spoilers#josh russo#maddie han#evan buck buckley#long post#media analysis#dispatch#anti bucktommy#i didnt go into bucks pov too much bc ive already seen a lot of good meta about that so i didnt feel i had much to add to the conversation#there were no serious meta/analysis breakdowns about josh's pov coming across my dash yet though so of course yall have to deal with mine <

Finally made it to the first appearance of Barriss on my rewatch and I genuinely forgot just how cute the interactions between her and Ahsoka are... the scene at the end of Brain Invaders where they're both freezing and Ahsoka is holding Barriss in her arms is just! Altered ten year old me's brain chemistry permanently.
#my brother and i were talking about how cute we think their dynamic is#barriss is the rule follower that reliably memorizes a whole maze to help them through it#and ahsokas an improviser encouraging her to learn to work on the fly#she gets a crush so quick too. literally the second barriss episode is about attachments like girl-#feels a little painful the first one she shows up in is a lesson about trust though#sw clone wars#tcw rewatch#barrissoka#brain invaders is also like one of the episodes i remember most vividly#there were shots i could fully and accurately recall from memory and idk if i watched it a few times or its just the lesbians#but i had those images in my mind and have been waiting for the episode where they show up for a bit now#the rako hardeen arc is the other one ive got strong memories of

I'm wheezing over Ingo and Litwick's dynamic jgjbjjxjsjwkfiisiq and TYNAMO FITTING INTO EMMET'S SCARF IS SOOO CUTE!! Love how you draw the little sbubby bois, their conductor themed outfits are soo freaking cute!!!
I have so many thoughts when it comes to them it’s insane. Glad you like the characterizations!
Here’s a quick one shot under the cut, as a treat for making it this far.
Emmet finds Tynamo three months before Ingo meets Litwick. Ingo has some thoughts.
Ingo and Emmet are part of a pair.
If Emmet is the fuck around and find out, then Ingo’s been relegated amused damage control. This has always been the case, right up until Emmet found tynamo. Then suddenly, it’s “wow emmet, you’re so responsible!” “Golly gee Emmet, what do you mean you don’t want to go exploring the cave systems after dark?” “Gee whizz, what do you mean curfew for your eel puppy?” “Why in Reshiram do you get to have a whole pokemon three months before we agreed to get starters, and i don’t?”
Ingo doesn’t say the last part. He’s a bitter world-weary twelve year old languishing about the unfairness of the pokestray distribution system, but he also loves his brother. Emmet found an injured tynamo in chargestone cave and decided to help— tynamo decided to stay. It’s every child’s film plot. Ingo being a grouchy gengar makes him objectively a terrible friend.
Oh dragons, is Ingo a bad brother?
“Ingo!”
Speak of the cold, and he shall enter. Ingo swings his whole body around to better brace for the flying tackle.
“Emmet!”
“I am emmet! You are sulking.”
Ingo clicks his mouth closed and tries not to sulk harder. He fails.
“You are not being verrrry convincing, brother dearest.”
“I do not have any idea what you are going on about,” Ingo’s traitorous mouth blurts. “Be convinced I love you and am not planning dastardly plots.”
Do not think about getting a ground typed starter. Do not think about getting a ground typed starter.
Emmet shoots him a judgemental look from under the brim of his hat. Ingo glowers back, and slowly starts leaning forward, smooshing Emmet under his weight.
“Ttttell me why you look like a crushed joltik.”
“Keep this up and you are going to be the crushed joltik.”
Anyways, Emmet is becoming more bold by the day and even actively discussing electric types with the new girl in elementary prep, Elesa. Ingo thinks she’s cool, but she flinched when he blurted a once again too loud greeting so he’s… letting that cool off. They definitely don’t have anything to talk about beyond pokemon, and Emmet and her already have pokemon. Ingo feels a bit left out.
Caught in the ennui of not having a blitzle or tynamo, Ingo slips as Emmet rolls out from under him. The two go down in an ungraceful tangle of limbs.
“Tell. Me. What’s. Wrong.” Emmet gently slaps Ingo’s face like a ripe oran berry. “You want to tell me sooo badly. Ooh.”
“Emmet- aurgh. Gerroff’”
“I don’t speak denial.”
Ingo gives up. His entire body deflates. Emmet, not expecting the sudden loss of spinal infrastructure, slides sideways and knees Ingo’s lungs.
Ingo wheezes. “I’m sulking because you were crushing my spine.”
“Tell me the truth.”
Uh oh. Ingo studies Emmet’s face. It’s the same one he looks into the mirror with, but marred with concern and self consciousness. Ingo made Emmet worry. He’s not just a bad twin. He’s the worst.
“You are Emmet.”
“I am Emmet.”
“You have Tynamo.”
“Tynamo’s charging at home.”
Smart ass! Emmet knows what Ingo means. And by Emmet’s smug grin, Emmet knows too.
Ingo struggles to explain that Emmet has Tynamo, and Elesa, and… that’s only two other individuals. He is truly the worst twin in all the land. Emmet gets two new friends and Ingo’s being an infant about it.
One day, Ingo will have his own pokemon partner and team— but right now, Ingo only gets to have Emmet.
Ingo feels this is an unfair trade equivalent, but he does not want to say it in a way that sounds rude, so he stalls.
Emmet has no such prefunctures. He squints at Ingo, who avoids eye contact and squirms. “You are… jealous?” He tilts his head in visible confusion. “What?”
Ingo covers his face with his hands, defeated.
“You arrrre jealous!” Emmet cries, bewildered. “Why??”
Ingo lets out an unintelligible wheeze. Emmet remembers he still has a knee on Ingo’s chest, and hastily sits back.
“I don’t want to be jealous,” Ingo finally bursts. “I am very happy for you Emmet! You and Tynamo are a winning combination!” His voice cracks embarrassingly. Emmet doesn’t flinch at the volume, even muffled under Ingo’s palms. “I don’t want to be a bad brother being jealous.”
“You aren’t a bad brother, Ingo.”
“I am. I am angry that you found your starter and I haven’t. I’m sad I interrupted your schedule with my inane demands. I have made you feel like you did something wrong. I apologize.”
Peeking between Ingo’s fingers, Emmet’s face falls. Ingo wants to be struck by a giga impact rather than face this. He would rather be a dusty imprint. Where is Uncle Drayden’s Haxorous when you need her?
“Ingo, Ingo listen to me.” Emmet’s hands dart forward to settle Ingo’s shoulders. The pressure is grounding. Real. This is where Emmet tells Ingo he’s being stupid.
He hears Emmet exhale.
“I’m sorry.”
Wait, that doesn’t sound right. “Pardon?”
“I wanted to train Tynamo as my conductor, and I left our two-car train unmaintained.”
“Pardon??”
Emmet looks uncomfortable and sad. It makes Ingo uncomfortable and sad. “Yesterday night. When you wanted to go to the caves. For our weekly charting. I said I’d rather help Tynamo.”
Oh. Yeah, Ingo remembers that. It had stung. “You are not obligated to say yes,” he protests. “In fact, you should say no more. You always say yes.”
“Yes.”
“What did I just say.”
“No. You’re my brother. I left you out.”
Ingo slowly puts down his hands. His face still feels warm, but he feels less scared. Now he just feels embarrassed. He can’t help but let out a meek plea slip. “Don’t go where I can’t follow, Emmet. Please.”
“I would never! We are going on our pokemon journey together, yep yep. You, me, tynamo, and whoever your starter will be!”
The two sit there on the side of the dirt road. Emmet’s declaration sounds like a dangerous promise. Ingo realizes at that moment he would do anything for his brother, who’s his best friend and confidant and world, starter or no starter. He opens his mouth to tell Emmet that.
“Wwwwwait. You are trying to go back to the caves. Ingo! Are you trying to find a starter by yourself!?”
Never mind. Emmet’s gone for his soft underbelly, and Ingo’s in pain. “Emphasis on trying,” he mutters instead. The joltik are not interested in him. The local tynamo swarm fled. A curious drilbur had sniffed him once, turned up its nose, and then trundled into the wall.
“…ah.”
Nothing had felt right for Ingo— too scared, too judgemental, or too uninterested. He’s starting to accept that maybe none of the pokemon in this town area match his truth or ideals.
Emmet was quiet for a long time. He had his thinking face on, so Ingo did not interrupt. He took the time instead to look up at the sky, watching the giant puff of clouds drift by. A plume of swabloo lazily inches their way across the horizon.
A shadow falls over Ingo. Emmet dusts himself off, and helps drag his twin to his feet. The two sway, clasping hands.
“We’ll ask Uncle Drayden,” Emmet decides, and Ingo is enthralled by the sheer truth of that statement. “He’ll let us use the subway! And you can look elsewhere, for a starter who is ideal for you. Wwwwith me and Tynamo, instead of by yourself.”
“Truly?” Uncle Drayden is a scary man.
Emmet nods. It’s easy to talk to Emmet— he just says words that Ingo would spend hours ruminating on. “I am verrrry persuasive.”
“You mean staring at him from the corner until he cracks?”
“Brother, you know me so well!”
Ingo cant help but laugh. He still feels guilty and bad for feeling envious, but a world with emmet by his side is significantly less hostile. Emmet’s hand is warm in his.“Thank you!” He cheers, startling himself with his volume. “Bravo,” he tried in a quieter tone.
“Bravo!!” Emmet replies, pointedly louder. Ingo squawks as Emmet pulls him off balance. “You are my brother! We’re going to find you a starter!”
Ingo tugs back just as fiercely. “Bravo!! We are going to harass Uncle Drayden into letting us board the train!”
Emmet leans with his whole body, dragging Ingo into the fulcrum of his centrifuge. “BRAVO! YOU ARE GOING TO HELP ME WITH TYNAMO’S TRAINING!”
Ingo digs his heels in, and then stumbles. “BRAVO, I, what?”
Emmet looked distinctly patrat-esque. “We’re in this together, Ingo. No backing out now.”
Ingo thought about it long and hard. He gets to see his brother get electrocuted. But he will, also, most likely, get electrocuted.
(Tynamo is Emmet’s starter. But maybe, it can also be Ingo’s friend.)
But brother say brother do, and Ingo’s probably obligated to run damage control if Emmet decides to, say, shove a fork into an outlet for Tynamo to snack on.
(Emmet fucks around. Ingo finds out. Even two steps apart with new people between, this is the way of their world.)
“Alright,” he crumbles. When they step this time, they step in sync. “We do this. Together.” (Enjoy this? Here's the link to the rest of my rat crimes.)

IN THE HONOUR OF SPOOKTOBER, HERE ARE SOME FIC RECS THAT WERE VERY ENTERTAINING AND SCARY AT THE SAME TIME
These fics can be a bit disturbing, so read at your own discretion. contain smut/suggestive themes. warning has been given, pls beware with your decisions.
∞ THE DOLL HOUSE | @ja3yun
synopsis: when you're strapped for cash and an opportunity arises to help you out, you're stuck in a mansion with 4 human-like dolls who do anything but sit still.
BOY WAS THIS A JOURNEY! The concept is just very interesting and i think it is PERFECT for this month. All the dolls have different personalities and their dynamics compliment each other. As you're reading the series, you might fall for jake or jay or sunghoon. nah nah honey, JUST WAIT TILL YOU GET TO HEESEUNG!! it is absolutely insane but i quite loved it! he is ultimately the alpha (please💀) and you might not agree at first but just you wait. I love how they all are so different from each other, like jake is that submissive shy one, jay is your iconic flirty one and sunghoon i believe was cold to the mc at first. and heeseung, he was just a mix of all but nowhere a sub LMAO. if anyone wondering, hoon is my fav 🤭 I RECCOMEND, READ THIS!!!!
∞ DEVIL KNIGHT'S PREY | @/dollyun
HELP SHE'S GONE 😭😭😭 I REALLY DK WHAT HAPPEND BUT I STILL WANT TO SHOW HER APPRECITAION FOR WRITING SUCH AN AMAZING FIC. IF SHE EVER COMES ON HERE AND SHE SEES THIS, HI KNOW THAT THERE ARE PPL HERE WHO CARE ABOUT YOU AND ONE OF THEM IS ME.
it was so so so interesting and horrific but very intriguing all at the same time and I truly loved her fic. ALL PARTS OF IT IT WAS JUST SO GOOD. i remember sending as ask to her saying it was nothing like what i usually read but I enjoyed all through out. I don't remember much but I loved the 'devil games' it gave like mafia irl but no one does anything. in this fic, hee was my fav. ever since he was introduced (i believe he was silver mask), you could just sense the main character energy from his character and the way he talks to mc. there was something about her writing and it was jus very alluring how each character's story was written. my fav was the maze scene (ifykyk). If you love dark romance books, you would've loved this one. TRULY LOVED THIS ONE, I WOULD'VE SAID YOU SHD READ IT BUT WE CAN'T ANYMORE SOO-
∞ I WOULD GIVE UP HEAVEN IF I HAD TO | @drunkhazed
genre. step-siblings AU, pwp, dubcon, love triangle, fluff smut humor angst etc
it's not really as dark (now that i think about it maybe not dark at all) as the other two but i do think it's perfect to read during this season. ik ik it's not one but two step brothers and ppl hate it but hey, give this one a chance, trust me. im not a fan of step-sibling trope myself but this blew my mind. the whole time you read it, you forget they are step-siblings and you have to lowkey remind yourself. i like the plot, it honestly felt like watching a movie and i loved the humor. in this one, its sunghoon. he was just the type to tease and be cocky and behave all push and pull but im all for it. heeseung was sweet and cute, but sunghoon's character definitely dominated over hee's for me. the paris trip was everythinggg it just gave so much potential to sunghoon and he was just all swoony and ughh. IF YOU DON'T MIND THE STEP SIBLING PART, I RECCOMEND YOU READ THIS.
#abby recs 🤩#honestly thought i read more dark fics but i jus can't remember them-#myb i shd do a angstober recc cus i def read more angst than dark horror themes#enhypen#enhypen au#enhypen fanfiction#enhypen hard hours#enhypen imagines#enhypen recs#enhypen x reader

can i request the reader being gojo's younger (or little, if that's what you prefer) sister during their highschool days? i think the dynamic between her and geto would be really cute and sweet! meanwhile, shoko would be the tired aunt that has to watch every stupid thing that stsg and the reader does 😭
๋࣭⭑ A CHAOTIC FOURSOME ₍⑅ᐢ..ᐢ₎
featuring. gojo satoru, shoko ieiri, geto suguru + gojo's little sister
warning. time sequence is during their highschool days (2006) and i'd say the reader would be younger than gojo by a year, so she's as old as nanami and haibara :D
note. i'm actually like so ecstatic to write this because i have so many assumptions of gojo with a younger sister, thank you nonnie for requesting this, ily <;33
the mother x the dumb x the dumber x the dumbest
no doubt that shoko is the mother of the group, without her the whole group is just well, plainly chaotic. satoru will come up for stupid plans, hence the dumbest. you will undoubtedly follow him, hence the dumber. and geto will think it's stupid, but will follow him, hence the dumb.
"okay, so what if we just — find a way to summon a curse, and sell our soul to it for something in return?" satoru asks with a cheeky grin.
"sounds cool, i'm in!" you replied with a large toothy grin.
"that must be the stupidest idea i have ever heard in my life," geto sighs out, "but let's do it."
"i don't have a soul," shoko mutters out of the blue, sighing out, "and you guys are incredibly stupid, you know that?" at the end of the day, the plan didn't even commence nor did you all talked about it again.
you are the closest with geto, he treats you like a little sister as well — except he's a little less of an asshole than your actual brother.
satoru is an asshole. he's a pain in the ass, no doubt. all three— you, geto, and shoko— can and will admit the fact that out of you four, satoru is the brattiest. however though, being related to him by blood, you were his target most of the time.
"ouch! satoru, did you really just shoot me with a nerf gun? that fucking hurts you ass!" you hiss, rubbing your nape— where satoru just shot with a nerf gun.
"take that, peasant." satoru sings out, attempting to shoot two more bullets at you, one hitting your arm and the other barely missing you.
you ran to shoko who immediately flee, leaving you open to satoru, traitor. before you eventually seek shelter behind geto who was sitting down on a bench, sipping a drink; and oh boy, the bullet managed to hit his face.
"oh shit." satoru mumbled, "it was an accident, suguru."
"damn." you look at geto, before laughing lightly.
geto smiled at your brother before standing up, and the cat-and-mouse chase between them both begin. geto made sure you were alright after, and satoru was— yeah, he survived, just a little bruised here and there.
being siblings is funny, satoru's closet is your closet too.
"y/n, is that my shirt?" satoru asks, pointing at the white shirt you were wearing and you hummed softly, sipping on a carton of milk.
satoru began lecturing you and how you shouldn't snoop in his closet, "lord, save me." you muttered out, walking in between shoko and geto while your brother constantly turned towards you to lecture you about asking for permission.
"are you even listening to me, brat?"
shoko grunted, "make him shut up, please."
"it's not her fault that she looks better in your shirt, satoru," geto laughed lightly, and that somehow managed to shut your brother up for the rest of the day— until he opens the door to your room late at night with a pout on his face.
"my shirt does not look better on you, for your information."
"oh my god, satoru you're so childish!"
as much as satoru teases you, when it comes to protecting you— he's number one, and he will always worry about you. he will not hesitate to tell someone off if they're bothering you.
"so, who is it?" satoru asks, his eyes not leaving the television screen.
you sat next to him and hummed in confusion. earlier you had gotten home with a small bruise right next to your lip, and as hard as you tried to cover it with make up — satoru still noticed the bluish purple outline of the bruise.
"what do you mean?"
"who gave you the bruise?" he asks again, calmly. way too calm for your liking, to be honest.
"i fell."
satoru finally turned to look at you, "doesn't look like you fell, just tell me what happened, it's not like 'm gonna do anything—maybe." he mumbled out the last part under his breath.
you sighed out, knowing the male won't drop the topic unless you tell him about it, "you know that one guy who wouldn't stop bothering me just because i beat him up in middle school for ruining my comic book?"
"the one i already try to tell off last time?" you nodded at him, "damn it, i should've gotten rid of him that time. want me to hollow purple him or do you prefer a more friendly approach?"
you chuckled, "i can fix this myself."
"nu-uh," he rolled his eyes, "hollow purple it is."
"'toru!"
"sheesh, fine friendly approach it is."
shoko and geto tries their best to look after you and satoru, but they don't get paid for this and always ends up giving up halfway and just joins in the "fun".
"oh, come on satoru, this is like the worst plan ever!" you tell him, crossing your arms.
"what? why? is it because i made it?" he argues, crossing his arms as well.
"no — okay, yes, maybe. but still it's a shitty plan, right?" you look over to geto and shoko who only nodded in forced affirmation, in all honesty, they didn't know what was happening between you and your brother or whatever you both were talking about.
"suguru, even you?" satoru whines out, "traitor."
"see? what about we go for my plan instead?" you offered, and satoru immediately declines, arguing with you.
it took you both two hours to finally settle on doing nothing because you got tired, and satoru got too angry that geto had to drag him away.
when satoru was supposedly "killed" by the sorcerer killer, toji. you were fucking destroyed. until he actually shows up, looking more alive than ever.
"oh, you're alive?" you asked slowly, although in disbelief.
satoru chuckled, opening his arms for you to fall into, "don't say it like that, might think that my own sister doesn't love me," not like you spent the whole time crying over him.
"fucking ass. i hate you so much." you hugged him.
"i love you too."
satoru spoils you. and when he does, he makes sure geto and shoko gets little of it too (because you told him to do it so they would feel loved).
"i was thinking — satoru treating us three to shabu?" geto immediately agrees with no hesitation, no thoughts, he just agreed to what you said.
satoru looks at you and smiled sweetly. a fake one. but it was fun watching him like this so you didn't care, "shoko?"
"free food? hell yeah." shoko nods her head with a smirk.
satoru ended up feeding all three of you like a mama feeding her child, and you ended up getting a scolding from him and a threat that goes a little like: "that's the last time i'm spending my money on you, loser."
but you know he didn't mean that. just watch how he'll probably get you something the very next day.

Oof.
Lots of feelings about this episode. Rambly-y highlights/bullet points while I think obsessively about it to further hurt myself expand on them:
Rosé continues to be a villain, and it keeps getting worse?
She was fine with playing the game, even with her hunch that Lompran was playing the "real version" with real people's lives on the line -- which isn't a stretch, because she was fine when it was her father's livelihood, and her own future on the line, and didn't much up too much fuss about Jack being part of the stakes, either.
She had just witnessed Jack have to beg to spare the life of Auntie Jaeb, and she suggests they go "celebrate", then doubles down on the idea after learning that Jack's grandma is in the hospital. Sprinkle in a bunch of "it's just money she lost, and you can just get more of that!" tone-deaf and insanely insensitive and out of touch nonsense, and it is very clear that none of these "poor people" are real people to her. Jack kind of gets treated like he is a person, but only so far as he indulges her whims, because forcing a person who is clearly barely keeping it together to take you for drinks and dancing is straight up villain shit.
She traipses through Jack's house and is completely unaffected at having seen Jaeb and Joke threatened at gun point, only cares if Jack is ready to "celebrate" with her. (Watching Jack turn on that fake smile was painful. Watching Joke watch it happen was worse).
AND THEN she's like "oh, sorry, we didn't see a way to make money off your friend's idea, but I can try to get him hired as a servant in my house, so it's basically the same thing, right?!" And Jack is forced to agree that it is good and not insane and fucked up that she's trying to get in Jack's pants while suggesting that his friends might be good enough to clean her bathrooms.
And then there's Top.
(and have we talked about how shitty it is to name one kid "Joke" and the other "Top" and pretend like you have no influence on how those kids move through the world? Because jfc I hate their parents)
Top swoops in and saves Joke from being caught in disguise, and seems to make some genuine overtures of brotherly affection, but it's all wrapped up in his toxic view on what parental love looks like.
He's trying, and Joke is clearly surprised but cautiously happy about it. But his whole speech about how his dad "shows love" was insane. Straight up abuse apologia. Because while yes, sometimes when two people love each other, they hurt each other on purpose because that's easier than being vulnerable, but that is not how parents are supposed to be with their children.
It is not acceptable "it's so funny how you can't just talk to each other" behavior for a parent to continuously reject their kid, and then expect love and obedience in return.
That's not how it's supposed to be, and I am so grateful that Joke has had a taste of what a healthy(ish) family dynamic is, because it allowed him to call his dad out and to (kind of) tell his brother that he's wrong, and then both Ama and Jack establish that Joke is part of their family, so he gets immediate payoff for his assertion that family is supposed to talk to each other and comfort for his subsequent rejection (again).
But yeah, Top's whole speech made me so. mad.
Hoy, Tattoo, and Arun were delightful, and I loved that they were all there with Jack and Joke while Amma was in surgery. Offering support and also relationship scrutiny. It was also so cute how invested in Tattoo's project Arun was; he believes in him so wholeheartedly, it's adorable.
Anyways, let's just stare at this for a while:

back at it again at Krispy Kreme.
Hello again!! It's me the silly anon (☆—(≧▽°)★~) I have another request. I was kinda thinking about another Floyd x transmasc reader one shot idea and I thought to myself "hey! Wouldn't it be could if they had a egg (baby) together?" :3.
This doesn't have to be NSFW/smut at all and you don't have to do this if you're uncomfortable with it (obvi, I don't think I can force you into writing this (。ノω\。) ). Anyway, thank you!!!!! - anon ☆—(≧▽°)★~
(p.s. I loved the other fic, it was great :3)
₊˚﹒✶﹒Taking Care Of Our Own .ᐟ
floyd having a baby with transmasc reader.
heads up! established relationship, usage of endearment terms, parenthood & a baby.
note ; hello silly anon!! this was a cute request. ngl this was kind of hard for me bc I don't really experience writing about parent stuff 😭 but I tried my best. I might make a continuation of this with the relationship between floyd and the reader with the baby and their dynamic, if you want.
floyd woke up with a mixed coloured egg in his hair, he was surprised at first.
he immediately talked to you about the egg, how excited but nervous he was and was eager to hear your viewpoint about it.
"we're having a baby! It would be so pleasant to take care of our own baby, but I'm so nervous. what if I mess up?" he said to you.
"I'm sure you won't, love. you've already done a good job loving me and taking care of me, I'm sure you'll do a good job for our baby too. plus, you won't be alone! I'll be right here with you, along the way. we can do this!" you reassure him while holding his hands.
"you're right. it's funny, I'm usually the one who says stuff like that yet you're the one saying my things back to me. thanks, honey." he gives you a warm smile as he leans in to hug you, a little tighter than usual. you take notice of that and pat his back gently.
It's been a few days since floyd first woke up with the egg in his hair. he hasn't informed any of his brothers yet about his situation. for now, only you and him know. he says he's saving it to tell when the egg finally hatches.
you were both doing your own stuff. with you cooking and floyd writing inside his journal.
you call floyd over to eat as you've finished cooking. he comes in and sits down across from you.
while you both ate, you decided to ask,
"so when's the egg gonna hatch anyway? do you have any idea?"
"not really, hun. I'm not too sure about it eith–" he gets cut off by the sound of something.
"Is that the egg?" you ask him.
floyd puts his hand in his hair and brings the egg out. lo and behold, the egg is moving– or well– shaking.
"oh gosh, it's happening!" floyd exclaims.
you both watch the egg shaking as it slowly cracked, your baby pops out!
it has traits from both you and floyd mixed together.
you suddenly hear sobs coming from floyd. you tear your eyes away from the baby that floyd is cradling to look up at him. his eyes filled with tears, happy tears.
you chuckle lightly, "oh, you baby..." you say to him as you wipe his tears away.
both of your hearts were warm and filled with joy as you stared at your own little baby that just hatched.
━━━━━━━━━━
It's been a week since your baby hatched from the egg. only now have you and floyd invited his brothers, along with poppy.
"oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh!" poppy screams excitedly. she's playing with the baby's tiny hands and fingers, talking to it in a baby voice.
"It's so cute! agh, you guys made the cutest baby I've ever seen!" poppy remarks, while cradling the baby in her arms.
"well, of course, it came from me and floyd. two hotties together make a cute baby." you state playfully, with a subtle wink towards floyd. floyd only giggles with his cheeks slightly heated.
"have you guys named it yet?" john dory asks.
"nope, but we're thinking about it." floyd answers.
"ooh! ooh! name suggestions! how about indigo, or eden?!" poppy suggests, bouncing lightly.
"what about haven? it has a nice touch to it." branch spoke.
"what do you think, hun?" floyd turns to you, with a smile visible on his face.
you thought deeply about it, "I think haven does have a nice ring to it." you affirmed.
you notice branch subtly light up from you considering his suggestion.
"ooh, bummer...I wanted my one to be picked." poppy mutters to herself.
"have you already prepared yourself for parenthood, floyd?" bruce asks.
floyd chuckles awkwardly, "to be honest, not really, but I think I'll manage."
bruce pats floyd on the shoulder, "if you need any advice, you know who to go to."
bruce gives him a singular finger gun.
"if your kid wants to visit putt putt village sometime, feel free to come." clay states
"will do, clay, will do." floyd replies.
after a while of conversing and hanging out, with some of them playing with your baby, floyd's brothers, along with poppy finally leave your humble abode, leaving you and floyd alone together. with the baby, of course.
"you thinking what I'm thinking" you say to floyd while moving your eyebrows up and down mischievously.
floyd rolls his eyes and shakes his head while grinning like a lovesick fool in denial playfully as a nonverbal reply to what you said. he hugs the baby closer in his arms and intertwines his hands in yours.

stan x reader x Ford ??
You had met Stanford at university, he was quite an intriguing student you must admit. I guess what made him intriguing to you was his hands, yes he had 12 fingers instead of 10 but you couldn't help but find it cute.
Then you started to get closer to him, it all started with Fiddleford, he had understood what was happening after all Stanford was in the science branch and you? Well you were quite literary so to constantly come across him it wasn't a coincidence.
Luckily for you Stanford finally made the first move, he came to see you one afternoon while you were on campus relaxing
Hi, uh, I noticed that we often meet, but uh, it seems to me that we're not in the same class?"
Seeing him talk to you surprised you, you didn't think he would, honestly he didn't think so either
"Hi, I also noticed that we often meet but no, we don't have a common class"
“Oh uh okay thank you, I won’t bother you anymore”
"Wait! Don't you want to sit down, can we talk?"
You asked the question so insecurely that a blush appeared on his cheeks.
“With pleasure, but can I ask what your name is?”
“My name is (Y/n) (L/n) but call me (N/n)”
“Enchanted Stanford Pines (N/n)” “
Nice Stanford”
“Ford”
“Ford?”
“You can just call me Ford”
“Very good Ford”
And that was how your love story began, you were both very happy, a perfect dynamic, then when you finished your studies you both went to live in Gravity Falls, for a time it was really happiness until at a certain time.
“Hey Sixer.”
"Bill! I told you to leave me alone"
“Oh but you are my muse, I won’t leave you alone”
“Our agreement no longer holds, I’ve put lead in my head, you can’t go in there anymore!”
“Fine, but what would you say if I decided to play with someone new, like oh hey why not (Y/n)?”
At this precise moment Stanford was frozen, he couldn't allow Bill to let you hurt yourself, you had nothing to do with all of this.
“Leave her out of this Bill, she has nothing to do with it”
“Oh oh it looks like I touched a nerve, know south you won't be able to protect her forever”
Without saying another word as Bill disappeared, Stanford was left speechless. He had to protect you at all costs, that's when he had the idea to ask his brother to come, Stanley, he could take the newspapers with him and prevent Bill from hurting you any more than he had planned.
A few days later you heard the doorbell ring, when you opened it you saw Ford, that's what you thought at first sight before he arrived pulling his double into the house.
"Stanley! Aren't you being followed?" "
What? Sorry? It's been years you haven't given me any news and suddenly you bring me here for no reason, you attack me and don't introduce me?"
You moved closer to them by putting your hand on Ford's shoulder just to reassure him, you remembered now it was your lover's twins. He had already spoken to you about it but very vaguely, you knew it was a sensitive subject so seeing him here was more or less impressive.
“Sorry, Stanley this is (Y/n) my partner, (Y/n) this is Stanley my twins”
“Nice to meet you (Y/n)”
“The pleasure is all mine”
You really thought it, Stan was someone who cared about doing well, at least he tried, you started to like him as friends of course you were madly in love with Ford, then one day when he came home from winter from work you saw Stan in the kitchen crying. You felt that something was wrong but you didn't want to believe it, you tried to convince yourself that it wasn't Ford.
"Hey Stan, is something wrong?"
“I- (Y/n) I’m terribly sorry but Ford and I had a big argument and and.”
A sob escaped his mouth as he started crying again, wanting to reassure him you took her in your arms rubbing her back hoping to make her feel better
“Shh, it’s not serious whatever happened we can figure it out together.”
“Ford has crossed the gate”
You froze.
Damn.
Ford went through the gate.
You may not have been a scientist but you knew what this portal represented, it had gone to another dimension and God only knows if it will ever come back Your eyes started to water and your vision became blurry, then you punched Stan. It happened on its own, you knew it wasn't intentional and he blamed himself but holy shit the man you loved was in another universe?
“Forgive me, I’m really sorry, I uh, I’m going to repair the portal, I swear, I’m going to do everything to bring him back.”
“It’s in my best interest, Stanley.”
He started working on the portal, you obviously helped him as best you could, at the beginning the cohabitation was going extremely badly due to the fact that you were angry with him and then after a while you ended up less TO DO. While Stan started to secretly jealous Ford for having you, you were so fucked up, you were beautiful smart funny and so many things in his eyes that you were just perfect Over the years you too began to fall in love with Stanley, you knew that he was not Stanford and that he never would be but you loved him for who he was, when the twins they were very surprised to see that their grunkle had a wife.
Everything was going extremely well, until Ford came back.He stood there in front of you, in front of you, the one who was supposed to be his girlfriend, the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. He hit Stan because it was dangerous then he looked at you
“(Y/N), did you stay?”
“Of course yes, with Stan we did everything to bring you back”
He grimaced at the thought, you had spent 30 years with his flirty twin brother?
“I’m so happy to be back, I love you”
You looked down and so did Stan, then he understood, you heard surprised voices behind you, it was the twins who also understood very quickly
“(Y/n) you were dating Grunkle Stan!”
Mabel shouted almost as if it were obvious
“So, now you’re dating my brother.”
"I, Ford listen to me I'm terribly sorry I waited for you for years believe me but"
“No need to justify yourself (Y/n), I suspected that after 30 years you would have started your life again, I just didn’t think it would be with my brother.”
He decided to leave with the twins, remembering seeing you in a parallel dimension.
He remembers remembering very well. He traveled through dimensions and universes, then he fell into a universe where you both lived in Gravity falls, he saw you happy full of joy with himself, you were both in the garden enjoying summer to relax. It was this vision that allowed him to survive all these years, a better future for both of you.
Which does not exist in this universe..

Seeing It Out (‘Seeing Her’ Part Two)

paring — george weasley x fem!bookworm!reader

warnings — everyone is stupid. maybe ooc.
read part one here!
She noticed him staring at her in potions. Well, she never proved it was her he was looking at, but she had a suspicion. Every time she would look up to transcribe the notes or recipes Snape described, she could see a mass of tangerine hair fly forward just a few desks ahead of her. She didn’t think anything of it at first. Why would she? But then she noticed him staring at her out of the corner of her eye before class one day. That look alone made her realize two things:
1. The looks she thought she may have been receiving were no coincidence and
2. The one staring was George Weasley
“I’m scared. Seriously, he’s planning something,” she confided as she and her friend, Meredith, began to stroll from dinner to their dorm, “He’s been watching me for a few weeks now. Something is going on.”
“Oh, don’t be silly,” Meredith giggled.
“I’m serious! When the Weasley twins set their sights on you, you’re dead in the water,” she guffawed.
“Or…” Meredith trailed off with a smile.
“Or?” She turned to her with an inquisitive look.
“Perhaps you tickled his fancy.” Meredith shimmied her shoulders suggestively.
“I tickled who and what?” Her eyes widened as she felt a laugh bubble at the back of her throat.
“I’m saying that maybe he keeps staring because he fancies you,” Meredith explained.
“George Weasley?” Her eyes crinkled as her grin widened slightly, “You’re mad.”
“Not mad, intuitive,” Meredith tapped her head, “You’re cute! You’re smart! Everyone in this bloody school ought to be head over heals for you!” She shook her almost comedically.
“Alright!” She laughed, “I get it! I’m fabulous!”
“Good,” Meredith said with a large smile, “Now, think about talking to him.”
“We haven’t disposed of the ‘the twins are going to put fireworks in my pillowcase’ theory,” she shook her head.
“I’ve disposed of it. It’s gone.” Meredith pretended to throw something before wiping her hands together, “But seriously, talk to him if you’re interested, y’know? He’s not too bad on the eyes – and I doubt he’s all too evil.”
“I guess I’ll think about it,” she shrugged, “How’s Emma going?”
“It’s – shit, I left it in the Great Hall,” Meredith groaned, “Wait here for me, alright?”
“I’ll wait an eternity for you!” She called after the girl.
“Put those moves on someone else, would you?” Meredith winked before disappearing down the hall.
George Weasley. He was popular, maybe not as much as his twin brother, but he was one-half of the dynamic pranking duo. She’d seen them before; they watched people, and so did she. They always observed their prey before attacking — but their targets were never just innocent bystanders. She’d like to think she was innocent. She’d like to think a lot of things, though, and not all of them were true.
Meredith was taking a while. Was she right? Was he interested in her? The thought seemed silly, foreign. It was like a honey bee finding a hidden daisy in a room full of tulips. Yet, she couldn’t help but smile at the thought. It was a nice thought. A flash of orange alerted her to the balcony in front of her. Funnily enough, standing at the edge, staring out to the floor below them, were the Weasley twins – and George was staring at her.
It was curious. This was the first time they’d ever connected eyes, yet it felt entirely natural. Maybe it was because she’d stared a thousand people in the eyes, or maybe this was different. She looked at him, and he looked at her, and for a moment, time was able to exist on a different plane entirely. God, was it cheesy. She’d read about this before; the lovers’ first meeting. Wait, lovers? They aren’t lovers, they don’t even know each other, besides – oh God. In a flash, something fell from George’s hand, flying down from the balcony and directly onto poor Professor Flitwick’s head. The thing burst ceremoniously and a powder fizzled around the man. He batted at himself in confusion as she looked on at him with horror. His hair was entirely green.
What the bloody hell was that?
She clutched her copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray — the copy that had just been knocked from her hands — in her sweaty palms. Today had been going great, spectacular even. Her dreams had wiped any memory of possible crushes from her mind. She woke up early, found a matching pair of socks on her first try, and was ready to pick up a new book. Meredith had shoed her out of the dorms when she attempted to wake the girl; she preferred sleep over food. So, it was just her and Dorian who’d made it out to the stairs when she was pushed (nudged?) to the ground.
By George Weasley, of course.
She’d wondered if this was a part of his scheme for a moment. It would be the perfect time to catch her off guard — bright and early before she’d even wiped the crust from her eyes. But then she saw his face and the shock that drew over his features. He certainly didn’t mean to bump into her. At least, it didn’t seem like it.
They conversed in an awkward manner, but managed to hit one another only once more. The real issue was the end of the conversation:
“See you in potions, George!”
It was meant to be friendly, a sort of peace offering if he was still trying to pull off something dodgy. And, of course, it was friendly enough until she realized she had never talked to him before. She sounded like a stalker. A bad stalker at that. She let her mind race as she rushed off to the Great Hall, hoping to not see the boy again before she got there.
It was a dragging, near exhausting wait until potions. Her nerves were so shot that, even if she calmed down, they would still leave a searing imprint under the surface of her skin. By lunch, she’d decided to try to calm herself. Surely he’d forget before then. Surely it would all resolve itself. Surely, she thought to herself as she pushed into the potions’ lab, there was–
He was sitting in her chair.
Meredith was late, unable to save her, and George was sitting at her table.
Her first move was to take cautious steps toward her destination. She knew well enough that this confrontation was unavoidable (or maybe she’d just built it up in her mind too much). She would just grit her teeth and bear it, though, because the only other alternative was to flee Hogwarts entirely.
“Hey!” He’d seen her, and she froze. She was only a step or two away from her seat, of course he saw her.
“Hi,” she responded with less grandeur. He stood in front of her, slicking his hands against his slacks as he smiled.
“Sorry about this morning,” his grin damn near sparkled, “I only do that sort of thing on the field usually.”
“Right,” she nodded. He was standing right in front of her seat, trapping it with his lanky body.
“Yeah,” his confidence stuttered momentarily, “Uh, your book. How is it?”
“Dorian Gray?” She questioned, receiving a nod, “Oh, it’s alright. A couple blokes doing a lot of talking.”
“Any puke?” George cocked his head.
“There’s blood,” she replied.
“Fluid is fluid,” he shrugged. There was another hesitation before he spoke again:
“I noticed you read a lot – muggle books, I mean. It’s interesting,” he stuck his hands in his pockets, “I was thinking about picking up a muggle book, but I don’t know where to start.”
So this was it. Weeks of stares and stilted interactions because of her obsession. She let out an audible sigh of relief. Any ounce of fear or tension drained from her body, and in its place, a peace rooted itself. Apparently, all it took to crack her shell was the mention of books.
“Oh, sure!” She spoke, her lips curling into a smile, “If you tell me what you fancy in a story I could find something you’d enjoy.”
“That’d be great,” he grinned, “Maybe I could tell you this weekend at Hogsmeade?”
“Hogsmeade?” Her eyebrows furrowed.
“Yeah,” he perked up suddenly, “There’s that muggle book shop near the outside of town — Argyle and Dicken’s? You could help me find something. Maybe we can go for butterbear after?”
There was nothing Jane Austen could have done to prepare her for an offer like this. No romance novel she’d ever read could help her. She couldn’t reply with something witty, or cute, or sultry. She couldn’t wink or do something flirtatious. All she was capable of doing was giving him a near-dumbfounded look whilst attempting to close her partially agape mouth. George Weasley wanted a little more than just a recommendation.
“She’d love to.” A feminine voice spoke from behind her. Meredith, somewhat winded and somewhat late, swooped in beside her to press a metaphorical hand to her jaw.
“Love to,” she repeated, though a little less confident. George seemed to appreciate the answer anyways, giving a quick nod of greeting to Meredith before smiling back at the other girl.
“Outside the castle at noon this Sunday work?”
“It, yeah, yes, it would work.” She nodded vigorously.
“Wicked,” he chuckled lightly, “It’s a da–“
“Get to your seats.” Professor Snape’s deep voice commanded. She, as well as Meredith, wasted no time shuffling past the boy to their chairs. George moved, though, only after he hesitated a moment. The potions lesson began unceremoniously, and she couldn’t help but look over to Meredith as Snape’s monotonous voice consumed the classroom.
“What was that?” She asked, eyes still wide.
"That was you getting yourself a date." Meredith whispered her reply happily.
A date. With George Weasley – the same George Weasley she had thought to be plotting against her, or at least hoping for her downfall. Yet, she couldn’t help but smile as the lesson went on.
A date.
With George Weasley.

I've seen in one of your post saying that Checo and Nico Hulkenburg kinda fall off?? I've known that they race in Gp2 at the same time and look quite closed. But they don't look close (from what I see) anymore. Genuinely asking, what happened between those two??
Side note: Love your blogs btw. It's so informative and positive 💕💕.
Oh yes, if we are talking history, I think Checo and Nico are similar to Brocedes. Nico and Checo were competing together in GP2, sharing a few podiums and being cute together:
Look at them! They were just babies. Loving how Nico always had his arm around Checo.
They became sort of friends, Checo has always said he admires Nico and he is his biggest competition. He has told his Dad, his brother, and in interviews. With his Dad, he said that if Nico ever made it to a big team, that would be the hardest fight. And to his brother, who asked him who was the strongest driver he had competed, Checo said 'Hulkenberg without a doubt'.
Nico entered F1 a year before Checo, so they kind of drifted apart... until they become teammates in Force India. But as close as they were, also they were extremely competitive. Otmar (head of the team) said that they were always trying to outdo each other, Hulkenberg managed the first year they were teammates, and Checo did it the second year, right when Nico decided to leave the team.
Those two years we witnessed them being competitive even in the team dynamics. There was an origami challenge and Checo was super pissed because Nico actually knew how to do that, it was wild. I think that created a little strain between them, but it wasn't as noticeable because we were in the middle of the divorcing of Brocedes, and that took the cake.
By the final year of Nico in the team, they were a little off, and not as close as before, standing in different places in the drivers' parade. Never stopped talking or made passive-agressive digs at each other like Brocedes (or crashed into each other), but the distance was there.
They seemed to reconnect when Nico moved to another team... but then 2020 came.
Apparently Max and Marko wanted Hulkenberg for the seat in RBR, and Horner wanted Checo. In the end, Checo got it, and Hulkenberg was out of a seat; these are just rumours, but apparently that didn't sit well with Nico and strained their relationship again. I read interviews with Nico saying that he was in talks with RBR, but Checo won in Sakhir and that sealed the deal.
Also, and that's beside the point but it adds to people perceiving some sort of feud between Checo and Nico, Nico was a little agressive with Checo, kicking him (playfully, never in a bad way), pouring things on him (those were more questionable) and making unfortunate comments about Checo. Nico is just like that, like when he approached KMag and said a sarcastic comment, and my shipper side saw this as pulling imaginary pigtails, but that's just my delusions.
Now Nico and Checo seem to be keeping a respectful distance, but not as close as they were before; they chat and act friendly, but not as teasing and sarcastic as they once interacted (they both were little shits and kept making weird jokes).
That's why I want Checo to go to Audi, so they reconnect once more and revive Hulkenrez!
Look at them! Power couple!!! 💖💖💖
Sorry for the long rant @lunarprophetuwu , as you can see, Hulkenrez is one of my weak spots. I hope I could actually clarify things and not make it more confusing.
And thank you for your lovely comments!! Happy of meeting amazing people like you who enjoy fandom without being mean! Hugs for you! 🤗🤗
I leave you with the power couple, even in different teams:
Checo likes' them tall your honor.
#anon questions#that aren't anon#but that's the tag#sergio perez#checo perez#nico hulkenberg#hulkenrez#checo go to audi with nicooooo

thank you, you’re the best. I will keep it short.
I wrote this to someone because I disagree with shuggy being great story in canon. But I thought longer and it turned out into more thoughts. First I do enjoy shuggy. I like them more as brothers and I like crocbug more. But I do like shuggy art sometimes.
Most of the story of shuggy is buggy being constantly angry at shanks. Every scene is just him being bitter, while shanks is chill. He’s angry because he’s not like shanks and blames himself for it. But shanks can’t help with that. It’s not abusive but you know how some DC fan are saying how joker is not harley LI but her origin story? I think it’s shuggy. Shanks is buggy begging. The have this bond but it’s over and not useful. What is left is buggy obsession which has to end. It’s without shanks reaction.
And both of those characters have more interesting and impactful relationships with other characters around them. Mostly shanks. He has people around him that are not jealous of him and are EQUAL. And buggy been replaced I think on purpose. Benn Beckman is there to be this close support that buggy could never be. Mihawk is rival, like buggy was in younger years but he’s meaningful to challenge shanks with respect and push him forward. Both of them make shanks better and fill those roles buggy couldn’t.
Buggy is just starting his bonds. He now has cross guild. And we know they’re gonna be for buggy in the future.
What do you think? I read OP many times and I think it does make sense and that is how the story will go. But you can call me out if you disagree. I respect you.
Woah, this is a long one! I just want to say, firstly, that you are entitled to your interpretations of Shanks and Buggy's relationship. However, I think you are going about this in a strange way. A bond is not measured by its usefulness, and claiming that Buggy has been "replaced" shows that you are viewing their dynamic from a distanced, almost utilitarian perspective; this isn't wrong, per se, but you are talking about characters who are meant to be people. And most people are irrational, emotional creatures who don't view their friendships as something profitable or disadvantageous. Buggy cannot be replaced by anyone, because Buggy is not a role to be filled in Shanks' life. Buggy was always just Buggy to Shanks. They were not friends because they only saw each other as useful. I think their interactions during the Wano flashback show that pretty clearly.
To address your point about Shanks and Buggy not being equals, though, I think this is a topic Oda has intentionally laid out, as it directly relates to Buggy's narrative. Buggy is someone who yearns to be seen as an equal -- just look at his reaction in Marineford when Whitebeard addresses him. (The blush is so cute, lmao.)
Buggy's insecurities are also the reason I believe he chose not to follow Shanks; my post here elaborates, but to sum it up neatly, Buggy immediately assumed he'd be working "under" Shanks, when Shanks only asked for Buggy to stay by his side. I truly think Shanks has always viewed Buggy as his equal -- it's just a matter of Buggy realizing that.
At this point in the story, they are more balanced than ever: both emperors with massive influence, albeit in different ways. As Buggy says himself, they are "on equal footing again." So, when you say their relationship has been unequal in parts, I don't disagree -- but that's not a flaw. That's intentional. It's an explicit aspect of the way their dynamic is written. It's a major source of their miscommunication.
Cross Guild is also currently a relationship in Buggy's life, but we don't exactly know where it's going. I would absolutely love it if Mihawk and Crocodile began to believe in Buggy and support him -- mostly because it would be hilarious -- but as of now, it is nowhere near a genuine bond. It is strictly business, and ironically, deeply unequal in terms of power dynamics. Buggy has only flipped the script on them recently, starting in chapter 1082, so we have to wait and see how that progresses.
At the end of the day, it's your opinion -- you can view Buggy's relationship with Shanks as uninteresting, and that's totally fine! But the lens with which you view their dynamic could use some adjusting. Your complaints stem from personal tastes, not fundamental problems with Shanks and Buggy's narrative.
#hope this doesn't come across as harsh#it's just simply how i view how YOU view one piece dynamics#you can dislike shuggy however much you want#curate your own fandom experience!#buggy the clown#one piece#shanks#shuggy#buggy#ask#akagami no shanks

Ok let’s talk all things Bridgerton.
First things first, we’ve all binged it the day that it came out, right?
Second, Nicola Coughlan the woman that you are.
Now let’s move on to the serious stuff.
I have to say that so far I’m liking this season but there are some things that I really don’t understand, namely all the subplots. Some of them should’ve either been cut or they should’ve had less screen time. I understand for example the introduction of Francesca and John because of how their story plays out in the future but what about the Mondriches? Don’t get me wrong I like their characters and their chemistry but I really don’t get why they’re such a prominent part of this season, hopefully their presence will be justified in part 2 for it would be heartbreaking to see unnecessary hate towards them.
Another aspect I liked is Eloise and Cressida’s friendship. In the beginning I didn’t think it would be something genuine but turns out that El does actually come to care for Cressida, who is finally not just relegated to being the mean girl.
Kate and Anthony are a dream to watch on screen, their chemistry is out of this world and they most definitely deserve the long ass honeymoon for god knows how hard these two have worked for their families.
I found Francesca to be such an interesting character and her and John were cute but the side couple that I’m really curious about is Violet and lady Danbury’s brother.
The Featheringtons were a highlight of this season to me. They had no business being this funny. Every time a scene with them came on I was prepared to laugh.
Queen Charlotte and lady Danbury are such icons you can’t help but love them.
Last but not least, Benedict. My boy what have they done to you? It’s so painfully obvious that they didn’t know what to do with his character because give me a valid reason why his storyline this time around is him going to bed with a widow; I would’ve much rather liked to see him in those artists’ parties or whatever like he did in season one and maybe explore more of that aspect of his personality in preparation for his own season, which hopefully will be next.
Time to talk about the leads:
I wish we could’ve seen more of Colin’s identity crisis but I feel like whenever the script was lacking Luke did a great job compensating with his body language and facial expressions. Also can we all agree that he’s just so whipped for Pen after their first kiss?
As a fellow wallflower I really related to the scenes where Penelope felt frustrated with the ton and all the socialising. I can confirm that even when we get all dolled up and feel confident in our own skin for once it’s still so hard to put ourselves out there. We feel called by the wall and somehow we find it more fascinating to observe all the different dynamics going on around us rather than actively taking part in them, even if sometimes we want to.
The scenes where Pen threw herself on her bed and sighed? Yep, I felt that.
I honestly didn’t mind that Colin and Pen got together by the end of the first part of the season for we’ve been watching the build up to their relationship for three seasons now. These two have been friends for ages so it’s not like they had to go through all that getting to know each other phase. Furthermore, I’m pretty sure that part 2 will focus on the unfolding of the lady whistledown storyline and having Colin and Pen be together makes more sense because now he loves and wants to marry her leading to an even more crushing reveal.
The carriage scene?! I died and resurrected in the span of like 3 minutes, and that’s just their first intimate scene I don’t know what will happen to me with the ones to come.
These were my overall thoughts on Bridgerton season 3. I can’t wait till part 2 comes out but also I will be deep in exam season so it’ll be a wild ride, let’s hope everything turns out for the best.🐝🩵

Sorry lovely, I had to censor a bit of your ask, sharing her business! 😭😂💜 and also I don’t give a platform here to the other part you mentioned, ain’t what I wanna attract around my space, protecting my peace and that😉
I totally get you!
Yes yes yes they censor themselves. They know what to share and what not to, most of the time. They keep it cute for us, many a time they’ve shared without really sharing you know. Like we’ll get a little cute nugget about Jimin playing with flowers and tinting his Eomma’s nails, that it was his dad that made/gave him the recipe for a hangover soup, Jungkook will talk about his Eomma’s bland japchae or his brother taking Bam or something. But it’s little sprinkles here and there. In the earlier days we learnt a bit from when radio interviewers or other interviewers would ask about their siblings, their childhood, their upbringing. These days it’s when their celeb friends also have interviews and are directly asked that they’ll share, like Sungwoon saying he was late to send Jimin of the service or Yugyeom talking about how the 96z all chipped in and bought him a designer bracelet for his birthday and how they all recently went to Busan together.
Yea we got conversations from them during AYS but you’re right it was like ‘oh the kids at the photoshoot’ ‘my album was what I wanted to do etc’ ‘this food is delicious’ ‘I slept well.’
I saw someone talk about how nice it was hearing them talk about Cosmic Terror because it was something unique that gave insight into how they think about something other than idol life. I felt that way too. It was also nice hearing them talk a bit more about the maknae line dynamics when they were younger. But as I said they know how to keep it ‘clean’ and keep it cute and I don’t think we’ll truly have much more than that. It’s a parasocial relationship. Not a real one. We get what they give us. Anymore we’re taking without their consent, overstepping our boundaries and doing it for ourselves, not them.
The same was we have our friends and brother in laws etc that we can chat to at the bar or on the phone or sitting on the couch, so do they. That’s the forum those conversations will happen with them, not with crew and strategically placed cameras. Not even with one phone with weverse live app opened up. We may get a leeeeeetttooll bit more with the later, especially after a glass or two of maekju or whiskey 😁 but that’s pretty much a novelty in itself. They’re kpop idols at the beginning and end of it all.
Jungkook having enough of the invasive and maybe delulu? questions/comments in a live (click for whole live)
Don’t worry too much about members not talking about their girlfriends etc. they have more than enough people in their circles they can talk about the ins and outs and plights or celeb dating etc. honestly they probably do wanna posts and be all coupled up on sns like other people their age but I wouldn’t be surprised if every member has burners/finstas and do all the things people their age do. Just because fans don’t see it doesn’t mean others don’t. My heart doesn’t bleed too much for fans not knowing ish.
That little crush convo for the cameras with their reactions, lol, we all know that ain’t how they really have conversations lool
Like if all my family, close friends etc know I’m dating someone but fans don’t. They talk smack or rumour me with others, who’s really laughing? Me and mine who know the real deal or people online confident in lies? There’s an old adage ‘what is understood don’t need to be said’ 😜
True Jimin stood ten toes down in his boyfriend style photo’ when Jungkook didn’t hear he said it again, then showed staff the photo and said it again 💅
And wouldn’t you guess it, go look in social media army spaces and you’ll find a Jungkook lover with that or it’s now used in au’s n ish. Let’s not EVEN get started on Jungkook’s birthday video message to Jimin, I swear I saw that as thousands of people’s pfp’s 😩
Even JK wasn’t like ‘f*** u mean boyfriend pic?!’, he was just like ‘meh lol, look at my hair, dummy shot, lol.’
So yea anon, I do get you, they could at anytime said it with their chest ‘you know I don’t like you like that right’ at anytime said ‘eww why would I do that with you’ the most we got was Slytherin Jimin letting Jungkook and all of us know he’s anti romantic😂 wanna talk about snow, ok we’re gonna be shovelling it soo, wanna talk about clouds, that looks like a whale, calling me prettier than clouds, errr nice try mister but u ain’t sweet talking me. He said it before and he showed it ‘I’m not easy’ AND ‘I can handle it’ you hear than Jungkook??? He was talking to Jungkook after all.
Ultimately I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. I was never expecting, even with the synopsis of the show saying ‘travelling, activities, food and deep talks’ (or something like that), that we were really gonna get actual deep talks. The most I expected was the level of conversation we’ve always seen from their lives or how they talked about things when having conversations to gather in ‘In The Soop’ this is Jimin that only did his live and showed his place right before he was gonna enlist and get rid of everything in his place and maybe the place altogether! Lool
Thanks for the ask, sharing your thoughts and reading my ramblings lovely. I honestly was just typing like I was talking to a friend so soowee if my writing and thought process is all over the place! 🙈

Ch. 13: I've Got It
Note:....Been a while. I know boooo, it was very shitty of me, and I'll spare you the sob story but I'm back. Thank you all for the continued support, I am extremely grateful to everyone who gave and continues to give this story a chance. I am ready to get back to work. This chapter is a long one as the beginning of my apology. As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions or just to chat, but all in all, it feels good to be back. Happy Valentines Day, babies <3
Warning: Toxic Family Dynamics, anxiety, angst and strong language.
“Now we wait.”
Lip rolls his eyes as he sits on the bed in his and Charlotte’s room at Kev and V’s house, crossing his arms. “This is fucking stupid.”
V’s sharp elbow goes into his side as Kev shushes him, facing the opposite direction.
The three of them are sitting and waiting outside of the bathroom door, straightening as Carol emerges from the room, blue and white stick in her hands and Charlotte in tow. “Auntie Carol, I told you I’m not pregnant-”
“Hush, little girl, stop whining.”
“But Mama,” V tries, rubbing her head tiredly. “She just had her period.”
“You shut up, Veronica, you were supposed to be watching her, not letting her shack up while you did, lord knows everything but take care of your cousin. Now I’m gonna hear shit from her father and his wife the whole time they’re here.” The older woman huffs, squinting at the test, snapping her fingers and pointing to the bed, gesturing for Charlotte to sit. “The least we can do is make sure she’s not pregnant when they get here.”
Lip rests his hand on Charlotte’s thigh as he tries to hide his annoyance with the whole situation. The call with Charlotte’s dad had been disastrous, as he suspected it would be. The older man had cursed him to high heaven before demanding Charlotte be on the next flight home. When Lip heard that he’d panicked, snatching the phone back from his wife and hanging up. All they’d received since then was an eerie message that they were on their way. Because he’s him and he has literally no control over his own brain, he had no choice but to question why she hadn’t told her parents about them, about him. It seemed like her dad hadn’t even expected to hear from a boyfriend let alone a husband. They’d at least been together long enough that her parents should know he exists.
In fact that’s all he can think about, aside from the fact that he may have lost his job. And how the two may be related.
“Fuck!” Lip growls as he punches the wall in the hallway. He’s unconcerned with what Fiona will say about it. He’ll just blame it on Frank.
Charlotte’s head pops out of the bathroom with a freshly bathed Liam on her hip, both looking as innocently confused as ever. Liam claps his hand, squealing, mumbling out an excited ‘fuck!’ as he meets his brother’s eyes. “No, Liam, that's a bad word. Phillip didn’t mean to say that. He meant to say darn, right Phillip?”
The blond is in too foul a mood to concede for cuteness sake and instead squeezes the boy’s cheek and gives his wife an appreciative pat on the ass before scooting past. “Nah, I meant fuck.”
Charlotte pouts as she bounces the child on her hip a little before taking him to sit with one his other siblings as she goes to figure out what’s wrong with her spouse. She’s noticed that Phillip has been on edge since her parents’ message, but she was beginning to think that wasn’t all that was bothering him.
She finds him spread out on the couch, staring up at the ceiling with a scowl on his face. Her pout deepens as she climbs over the side of the couch, laying her body over his, pressing her chest to his and offering him a bright smile. “Talk to me, bubba.”
“I’ve just got shit to figure out I guess, I gotta handle it or we’re fucked.” he huffs, rolling his big blue eyes, as she smooths the lines between his brows with her soft fingers.
“Shit like what?” Charlotte asks, tilting her head lightly.
“Watch your mouth.” He murmurs, softly, dragging his thumb over her bottom lip before pushing it into her mouth, humming with quiet satisfaction as she simply closes her mouth around it, brown eyes staring up at him intently. “That shit at the party, lost my cool, cause that fucker is trying to fuck you-”
“Don’t want him.” she says around his finger.
“I lost my cool and sorta might’ve cost us a good thing.” Lip sighs, smoothing his other hand over her hair. “Daddy wants to talk to me in his office later this week. Fucked it up, sorry baby.”
It almost feels worse. How quickly she shrugs off his failures. She doesn’t tell him he fucking sucks, or that he ruins everything. She doesn’t huff and push off of him. She offers him a soft smile, kisses him deeply, and tells him ‘they’ll figure it out’. They’ll do it. Another thing he just can’t do for her. He feels helpless. He loves her, and this job was the biggest step he’s made in showing her that. He might beg. He might literally have to set his pride aside and beg.
That was part one in the hardest lesson life has taught him. Phillip Gallagher is not good enough for Charlotte Gal…Fisher.
“Yay, Debbie!” Charlotte screams , clapping along as Ian whistles. The family was gathering for Debbie’s first soccer game of the season and it was…not going well. Turns out Debbie’s team sucks and she doesn’t respond very well to the rules and restrictions of soccer. She was currently focusing more on digging her heel of her cleats into the shin of a kid who’d accidentally kicked her hand while the ball rolled past her.
“Fuckin’ kill ‘em, Debs.” Mickey calls, lighting his cigarette. His brows furrow at the looks the parents around him send him. “I fuckin’ meant, metaphorically.”
“Figuratively.” Lip corrects, smacking away the middle finger that gets waived in his face. He sighs as Charlotte knocks his own cigarette out of his hand before he can light it, slapping her thigh, pulling her leg over his as she giggles in his ear. Lip relishes in the closeness and warmth he gets from this moment. His wife leaning into him, absently toying with his fingers as she cheers for his little sister.
It makes him think. He thinks about the future. Doing this with his kids. Their kids. Kids he didn’t even think he wanted. Not until her. Just the idea of her opens a world of possibilities he hadn’t even factored in. It feels good. It would feel great, if some fucking idiot wasn’t staring at her like a piece of fuckin’ meat-
“Can I fucking help you, fuck face, or do you wanna keep starin’ at my wife?” He demands, standing immediately. Ian and Mickey are following suit soon enough, the latter, lifting Charlotte and placing her on the opposite side of all of them.
“Woah,” the guy lifts his hands in surrender, eyes darting between the men nervously. “I just was trying to figure out where I know her from, I don’t want any issues.”
“Let’s just say you don’t know her from anywhere and you get to keep your teeth, alright?” Mickey growls.
The three men settle back into their seats and return to the game. Charlotte waves off Debbie’s confused look that she sends to the stands. She whispers into Lip’s ear that everything is fine. That the guy probably frequents the bar she works at. But from the way she shifts uncomfortably in her seat, zipping her jacket up to her neck and crossing her arms over her chest, hoping he wouldn’t notice…Lip fucking hates himself. He really does. He hates the guys at the club that pay to see the love of his life essentially naked. He hates that they go around thinking about her after they leave the fuckin’ seedy ass building. He hates that she works there, because despite the fact that her body is beautiful and he’s glad she’s comfortable in it, his insecurity is making her insecure and now they can’t be at his sister’s soccer game, or the grocery store, or the park or the club without someone fucking eye-fucking his wife, pissing him off and making her uncomfortable in her own damn clothes.
But mostly, mostly he hates himself for not being able to make her like the women sitting on the opposite side for the other team. The soccer moms who have husbands that take care of fuckin’ everything they need and have shit to spare to give them what they want. He hates that she’s not sitting here with one of those fancy, stupid ass purses that they all seem to fuckin’ have. He hates that while they got to drop their kids off at a nice ass school after they kissed their husbands goodbye and then went shopping or drinking or whatever upper middle housewives do with their days Charlotte was helping clean his shithole house. He hates that after the game he’s gonna drop her off to the club where she’ll meet more creeps who get off thinking about her and eye-fuck her in his face. He hates that he’s too pussy to go into the club because then he’s worried he’ll steal one of Mickey’s guns and air the bitch out and Charlotte’ll be forced to visit him in jail for the rest of her life.
So Lip grinds his teeth and finishes watching the game. Leg jumping as he tries to soothe his temper. That’s part two.
Charlotte’s parents arriving is the nail in the marital coffin for Lip. They go pick them up from the airport in the attempt to make a good impression. The couple borrows Kev’s car and the whole ride their Charlotte tries to keep him in a good mood. He knew he must be walking into the lion’s den from how she’d been acting. They’d had sex twice that morning, and before he could start to offer to make her breakfast for her…efforts, she was pulling out the ingredients to make him pancakes. In the car, she didn’t whine about his music, just humming softly as it played, rubbing his arm as his hand rested on her thigh. He wants to be able to leave it at this. He doesn’t want to interrupt the great morning by asking the dreaded question, but he’s him and he can’t let it go.
“So, we haven’t really gotten to talk about it, but I need to ask…why didn’t you tell your parents about me?”
Charlotte takes a deep breath, staring straight out the window as they pull into a pickup spot. “They’re parents…you know, they didn’t exactly send me here to get married in three months.”
“They won’t approve. Fuck.” he nods.
“Bubba, it doesn’t matter.” Charlotte turns to face Lip, pulling her knee into the seat beneath her. “It doesn’t matter, I approve. I’m more worried about what you’ll think of me. My parents aren’t the nicest people, and…I’m not good with navigating them.”
“Charlotte, there’s literally nothing short of murder you could do that would make me change my mind, you’re not the one we need to worry about.” Lip pushes his tongue into his cheek absently, nervously drumming his fingers on the steering wheel, the reflection of the simple ring shining on his hand.
“This is temporary, right?” Charlotte murmurs, leaning over the console and placing her hands over Lip’s. “They’ll come, and see how good you take care of me and they’ll go home. ‘Kay?”
The blond man just nods quietly, pulling her hand to his lips and kissing it, savoring their bubble one last time before they get out of the car.
“I hate the airport, it's dirty and busy all of the time.”
Lip rolls his lips together as he drags his in-laws bags over to the car, listening quietly with Charlotte as her mother and father talk about how miserable their flight has been. Her dad, Victor, had given him a curt nod in introduction and held his arm out for Charlotte to obediently place herself into a hug that Lip could tell she didn’t want. Her mother Cynthia had kissed her cheeks in a European way to where they never actually touch. Both people looked polished, and barely tried to hide their wince when Charlotte said, “This is my husband, Phillip.”
Lip’s wife’s pretty brown eyes haven’t lifted from ground level since they met her parents at the terminal, an absent look on her face as her parents drone on and on with pleasantries.
“...and, honey, don’t you think it’s a little too cold for that outfit?” her mom finishes, as the three of them stand back and watch Lip load the car.
“‘M warm.”
“I am warm.” Her mother corrects.
“I am warm.”
“I don’t know how you could be, with this frigid Chicago air. Hopefully you’re not getting sick. Phillip, you always have to watch her, she never wants to wear a coat, always trying to walk around half naked and expect not to get sick-”
“We’d better hope she’s not having hot flashes.”
“Victor!”
And that too. The snide remarks. Glances down at Charlotte’s stomach, and positioning himself between her and Lip as they walk back to the car. The muscle in Lip’s jaw jumps in irritation as her father continues to insinuate that the only reason he’s here is because he’s some white trash deadbeat that knocked his daughter up.
“I’m not pregnant, Daddy.”
“As you’ve told me.” The older man grunts, sliding between his daughter and the car, climbing into the front passenger seat the second the lock clicks open, not even sparing her a glance.
“Are you guys, uh, hungry? We could stop and get something to eat.” Lip sniffs, glancing up into the rearview mirror to get a look at Charlotte. She’s in the back, toying with her fingers as she stares out of the window. That is until her mom swats at her hand to get her to stop, and she takes to biting her lip instead.
“No thank you, young man, the hotel should be fine.” Victor huffs again, for the fiftieth fucking time since he’s been in the car. “Charlotte, I made you a doctor’s appointment for tomorrow, since you never took the time to find a physician yourself. Your mother will take you after we have breakfast. I assume you’ll be joining us, Phillip.”
Charlotte manages to look up at that, her voice resigned as she addresses her father. “Of course he will, Daddy, we’ll be with you bright early.”
The car goes silent for a moment before Victor mumbles under his breath, ‘you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.’
“Daddy?”
“I’m sorry, are we supposed to pretend that this is okay? Cynthia, I tried, but this is fucking ridiculous!”
“Victor! Please.”
“Okay.” Lip grunts, pulling the car into one of the hotel parking spots in the far corner of the lot.
“No, Charlotte Andrea Fisher, you are 19 years old. You are away from home for the first time, against my better judgment. You have been away for only 3 months. You are naive, and impulsive, and for some reason want to be like your cousin Veronica so damn bad. You are going to take your ass upstairs to the hotel room your mother and I got you and you are not shacking up with this boy-”
“He’s not a boy, he’s my husband, Dad.” Charlotte whimpers from the backseat. Lip grinds his teeth and unbuckles his seatbelt, catching her mother roll her eyes and rub her forehead as he climbs out of the car.
“Oh, god, the waterworks-”
“You are a little girl, and that is a boy. You’re talking about marriage, that sham is getting annulled, if it was even legal-” Victor follows suit, climbing out of the car and slamming the door, opening his wife’s before walking, meeting Lip at Charlotte’s door. The older man goes to tug it open, only to be stopped by Lip’s hand. “Move.”
“No. My wife is coming home with me.” he says calmly.
“Your wife? Your wife, she’s my daughter, and she’s coming with me and her mother-”
“Her mother and I.” Lip says smugly.
“Oh.” Victor cocks his head, taking a step closer to an unflinching Lip. “You think you're tough, boy?”
“You tell me, we’re from the same place.”
The older man glares past him to the car window again. Shifting his attention to Charlotte. “Charlotte Andrea Fisher-”
“Gallagher.” Her muffled voice calls from behind the cheap glass. “My last name is Gallagher now, Dad.”
It’s quiet. Soft. Her voice waivers. But still. She said it. And still, it fills Lip up with pride as he leans against the car door, using its keys to click it closed as he watches her mother drag her husband away. Forcing him to the hotel.
After he watches the fancy, sliding double doors close behind them and the yelling becomes a little more faint, Lip unlocks the car. The way she falls into his arms crushes him. The tears, the shaking, the sobs of ‘I thought they’d give us a chance’ that part hurt.
Lip Gallagher has watched his parents abandon his siblings. Hit them. Steal from them. Lie. Everything in the book of bad parents. He’s been watching it his whole life. He’s numb to it. It’s life, he tells them. Doesn’t matter, they don’t matter. Frank and Monica. They’ve never been anything to them, and never would be.
But watching this. Watching Charlotte lose her parents in front of him, because of him, he’s never seen anything like it. He’s sad for her. He watched them rip her to shreds with words and disapproving looks. They came here and broke the love of his life within an hour and a half.
This wasn’t the final straw.
No, because Lip’s girl is sweet. This is something he’s always known, and in anyone else he’d call it a flaw. She’s like Debbie, but less vengeful. She forgives. Gives second…third…fourth chances. Hell, its the only fuckin’ way he’s been able to keep her, and normally, he’d thank whatever shitty higher power that’s up there that dropped this woman in his lap for him to hoard to himself but not today.
“She says she wants to say sorry for him. I’m not gonna talk to him, just her. She promised.”
“Bunny, I’m not gonna tell you don’t see your mom-”
“Good!” Charlotte chirps as Lip watches her tug on some notably baggy jeans over her shapely legs, and pull an oversized sweater over her head.
“‘M gonna tell you it’d be pretty fuckin’ stupid though.” he finishes, grabbing the edge of her sweater and pulling her into his lap as he sits on the bed.
Charlotte smoothes her fingers over his cheek before leaning her forehead against his. “Hm, like threatening your boss's son?”
“Fuckin’ defendin’ your honor.” he grunts, tilting her toward him and patting her ass.
“My hero.”
“Exactly, and now I’m the fuckin’ dragon, lockin’ you up in the tower so the evil people who made the princess cry yesterday don’t get to do it again.”
“That’s really not how fairytales work. And dragons can’t lock doors.”
“Fuckin’ smartass.” Lip breathes, connecting his lips to hers, kissing her deeply. He squeezes her tightly, trying to wring every negative thought out of her head. “They hurt you.” he whispers against her lips.
“They’re my parents. They think they’re doing what’s best for me. They’re not. But that’s what they think.” she whispers back, pressing one more kiss to his lips before pulling away. “So, I’m gonna go to this doctor’s appointment. Do another pregnancy test. Show them we’re married because you loveee me. And then, I’m gonna tell my mom our love story, leaving out some key details. And I’m gonna make her love you like I do, Bubba.”
Lip sits back and takes in her words. Because maybe that is what she’ll do. Maybe Cynthia will reconsider and maybe that will make things better. Maybe they’ll understand their situation and that they love each other and he’s pretty sure they won’t fuckin’ love him but maybe they’ll understand that he fuckin’ loves her. “Hopefully not like you love me. You’d have some competition.” she gasps at that, smacking his arm. “What? You look alike!”
The plan was clear. Charlotte was supposed to go and charm the pants off her mom on Lip’s behalf, he was supposed to be at home, hold down the fort, and figure out what the hell he was going to say to his boss, to get his job back.
Lip had set up shop. He’d plopped back on the run down couch in his house, and pulled one of his little siblings toys from underneath his ass and started rolling a joint on the table. It was time for him to play his part. Think. For him, and for his family.
But then there was the knock. And then it turned into knocking. It was incessant.
“Fuck! Hold on. ‘M fuckin’ coming!” He calls, tripping over the plastic bat on the floor when he makes his way over to the door. “What-”
“Phillip.”
“I…what the fuck are you doin’ here? Come to yell at me s’more?”
Victor Fisher stands with his arms crossed. Polished with a neat sweater and ironed pants, looking wildly uncomfortable and out of place in his own old neighborhood. “No, I…think I did enough of that yesterday. At least that’s what Cynthia tells me.”
“Okay,” Lip shrugs, leaning in the frame and catching Victor’s glance at the chipped paint. “Well, she tell you that she and Charlotte are going to the doctor?”
“Yes. It was my own idea to come down here and ask you to come get something to eat with me while we wait.”
The blond’s eyes narrow as he laughs incredulously. “You’ve gotta be fuckin’ kidding me.”
“Not at all.” Victor sighs, crossing his arms. “I am extending an olive branch. For Charlotte’s sake. Grab the other end.”
For Charlotte’s sake.
“So tech. Good business.”
“Technology and science are languages that I’ve always been able to speak. It pays too.” Lip shrugs, pushing a forkful of eggs into his mouth.
“Well?” Victor asks without looking up. This has been their breakfast so far. Short, stilted conversation. Lip answering the questions Victor fires at him. Trying to gauge his reactions to everything he says. Pretending he wasn’t starting to hate this man.
“Gettin’ there.”
“How many siblings do you have, Phillip?”
“Uh, five.”
“Smart like you?” he asks, pushing his glasses up his nose.
“They’re smart.”
“But not like you.”
“Uh, no. Not like me.” Lip shifts in his seat, suddenly unable to follow the conversation.
“Hm.” Victor reaches to the side of the table, pouring more coffee into his cup and then into Lip’s. “Charlotte is an only child, you know that?”
“I know everything about Charlotte.”
“So, you know why we want her to go to the doctor so badly?”
“Fuckin’- yes!”
“You know she’s got chronic pain? That she suffers from sickle cell? She told you that?”
What?
Lip tries to keep a poker face as all of the wind is knocked out of his body. A thousand questions are swirling around in his head. His chest hurts. He didn’t know, why didn’t he know? He should have known-
“Do you know what happens when people who suffer from sickle cell go into crisis? What a flare up of chronic pain looks like for her?” Victor sighs, fully removing his glasses this time. “Probably not, you’ve known her for three months. But it happens, and it's bad. She…she can’t move. Barely eats, loses weight rapidly. The pains. The shakes. The crying. Are you prepared for that?”
“Yea-yes-”
“I’m sure you could. You’re a man. I understand that. You grew up here. You’ve had to be a man long before you were supposed to and that is unfair and I’m sorry that happened to you but the reality is, Charlotte is a girl. You two are a year apart, but you’re a man and she’s a girl. She grew up in a nice house, with me and her mother. She went to nice schools. We knew she was pretty, too pretty for her own good, so we protected her from the boys not worth keeping around-”
“Fuck you.” Lip scoffs.
“No, I’m not implying you’re not worth anything, Phillip. Boys like you from this area are diamonds in the rough. Just like me. I was just like you. And I got the girl. You have Charlotte, I had Cynthia. I know how it feels to hit the lottery.” Victor pauses to take a drink of his coffee, gesturing to the waitress for the check. “But Phillip, I don’t speak to my siblings. My parents. They were deadbeats. My siblings stayed here. I left them behind. They hate me. All of them. And over time, I’ve learned that I don’t care. I chose Cynthia. I chose me. They were holding me back. I let them go. Because you’ll learn, Phillip, that getting there only gets there, when you can focus. You can’t keep two families afloat.”
Lip works his jaw irritably, feeling his skin heat with irritation as he weighs what his father and law says. “What are you trying to say? I should abandon my family?”
“No. I’m saying it's not too late to choose them and annul your marriage. We both know you can’t take care of Charlotte. Not the way she should be. Not for a long, long time. So give her back to people who can. People who can make it worth you and your family’s while.”
“I…” Lip grits his teeth at the sound of his voice cracking. “I love her. I take care of her.” “She’s been living here, working as a stripper under your care. Want better for her, Phillip.” Victor says, snapping his checkbook closed as he slides the piece of paper across the table. The waitress comes over with the bill, dropping it between the two men and Lip absentmindedly reaches into his pocket to find some money, pausing when the older man holds his hand up to halt him. “Don’t worry, son. I’ve got it.”
Sending the message was hard, but it was the only way Lip knew how.
He knew he couldn’t look Charlotte in the face yet. No. He needed more time. Time to think. Time to decide he was doing the right thing. Time to finish talking himself into this.
Victor told him what he needed to do. Bend her heart, not break it. Neither of them wanted to see her broken. Just hurt her enough that she’s prepared to go home. Charlotte’s stubborn, so she won’t just give up. She won’t run to her parents so easily. So Lip would need to be able to hold out long enough that she would give up. Get tired. Realize it was over and go home.
And Lip would be able to pay the bills in the house, for the next three months. One month for each one he and Charlotte had together. He would be able to get his family a car. He would have something to drive back and forth to work in. A real car. Not a run down busted up car barely off the junk lot. A real car. One that he could keep for years.
So, he came home. Her mom kept her out a long enough time, clearly in on this plan to write him out of Charlotte’s fuckin’ life. He went to his house. He looked his siblings in the face and told them that he was ending things with Charlotte. And they were fuckin’ pissed. The kids weren’t talking to him. Debbie said she hated him. But she’d get over it. That’s what Victor had said when he’d told him how they loved Charlotte.
Carl mumbled something about a ‘waste’ and shoved past him. Liam doesn’t understand. And Lip knows that he’ll feel horrible when his baby brother wakes up tomorrow asking for her.
Ian and Fiona were the worst. Ian started rattling insults immediately. Telling him what a piece of shit he was. He knows. Telling him this is the only chance at something good, at love he’ll actually get. He fuckin’ knows.
Fiona just asked so many questions. Why? What happened? Are you sure?
That all stopped when Lip shrugged, schooling an emotionless expression onto his face, dropping the check onto the kitchen table and snapping his phone closed as he finished his message. “It’s done.”
All of that hurt. It fucking sucked and he felt like blowing his brains out when the flood of text messages started rolling in. But nothing could beat the crying. The begging.
“Bubba, please.” Her voice is small on the opposite side of the door, the whining lilt to it has his entire body tense as he leans against the wood, staring at the wall over Ian’s shoulder, refusing to make eye contact with any of his siblings. “I love you. Why are you doing this?”
“Lip-” Fiona starts, cutting herself off when her little brother looks up at her, wide blue eyes watery with tears, an exhausted look on his face, jaw clenched so hard she worried his teeth would crack. She thinks this is a mistake. She loves Charlotte, and even more, Lip loves Charlotte more than anything, but this was his decision, and he was her brother.
“I love you, what did I do? M’sorry.” she whimpers, soft thump letting the three siblings know she’d slid down the door. “Please, I love you. Please…st-stop.”
The three eldest Gallaghers stand there in a stalemate. Ian shifts on his feet, quietly shaking his head as he looks away. Fiona watches her brother struggle somberly, wondering if she could have done anything that would have avoided this.
And Lip, silent, straight faced, completely devoid of emotion as he rests his head against the door, staring forward. The only indication that he feels anything at all is the few tears that managed to escape down his face.
It goes on like this for an hour and a half. At 40 minutes, Ian scoffs, mumbling under his breath as he storms his way up the stairs, slamming his room door closed, causing his sister to flinch. Once the standoff reaches 1 hour and 15 minutes, Fiona sighs, scrubbing a tired hand down her face before patting an unmoving Lip’s shoulder, retiring to bed herself.
The sobbing and constant knocking at the door had slowed to quiet pleas, still making Lip’s chest hurt just as bad. He’s doing what’s best for her. He knows that. It hurts now, but she’ll recover from this. She’ll be better, she’ll have a chance to do better than him.
Lip will never recover. He knows that too. He knows that this is his better. His best. Being with Charlotte is everything. That’s why he doesn’t deserve it. He should’ve never tried to drag her down with him. He can’t give her the life she deserves, or the things she should have access to. He could only offer her hard work, and being bound to mental illness and alcoholism. Trapping her with a baby, forcing her to live in the fucking slums and dance for a couple of bucks from creepy frat boy fucks and drunk limp dick losers like his father.
Soon he can hear footsteps approaching the doorway, Charlotte is immediately riled up by the presence of whoever it is. “No, no, no, he needs to talk to me. Something is wrong, I don’t know what I did- Phillip, please.”
“C’mon Lottie, let’s go home.” Lip recognizes Kev’s muffled voice from the opposite side of the door. After some quiet arguing, he finally releases a breath when he hears the wood creak under the weight of them walking away.
The man ignores the crushing feeling in his chest, the gut wrenching pain that comes with the realization of what he’d just done. A numbness spreads over his limbs as he hazily makes his way over to and up the stairs, breathing shakily. He reaches the doorway of his dark room and stops there. He wants his bed. He wants to climb under the covers and pretend he didn’t just blow up his fuckin’ life. But he can’t make it over the threshold.
This is her room too. He didn’t think this through. She’s touched everything. How was he supposed to lay in the bed that they laid in together? Her clothes are still in the drawers. Pictures still taped to the mirror and walls. Fuck.
It’s humiliating, the way he breaks down. Strong shoulders shaking with stronger sobs. Body curling over until his knees simply give out, he sits on the floor next to the crack in the wall where Carl had drilled a hole to hide drugs for Frank. The sound of miscellaneous toys left out squeaking under him. Lip pulls his legs to his chest and cries, because it’s all he can do. Despite every ounce of his being telling him, ‘stop being a bitch,’ ‘the fuck are you cryin’ about, pussy?’ he can’t help it. And he doesn’t stop. Not when his throat started getting sore, or his back started to hurt. Not when the sun starts to peak in through the half broken window in the hallway. Not when he feels his little sister lay a blanket over him before sitting beside him, quietly resting her head on his shoulder.
Charlotte doesn’t fare much better. She finally fell asleep with V rubbing her back, sleeping in her cousin’s bed while Kev slept downstairs. When she wakes she has a pounding headache, her eyes are puffy and burn. She wraps one of the blankets around herself before dragging to the bathroom, brushing her teeth and splashing water on her face.
She’s hurt. Heartbroken and confused. She knows why he’s doing this. Her parents said something. Did something. Something that made him decide she isn’t worth the trouble.
But she wasn’t going to give up without a fight. She loves Phillip. She loves her husband, and she didn’t take their time together lightly. She pulls on one of Phillip’s sweatshirts and jumps her way into a pair of jeans before looking at herself in the mirror.
“Hey, honey,” V’s soft voice comes from behind her, Charlotte’s cousin appears over her shoulder, wrapping her arms around the younger woman. “I didn’t think you’d be up.”
“I’ve gotta,” she sniffs, combing her fingers through her hair. “I’ve gotta take Liam to daycare. And um, make sure Carl remembers his science project. See if Phillip wants me to have lunch with him at work today, I could…I could make him something-”
“Lottie.” V interrupts, “Didn’t Lip-”
“He’s confused.” Charlotte says sharply, swinging her purse over her shoulder, holding her hand out to her cousin expectantly. “My key to their house is in our room. I…don’t normally need it.”
“Charlotte, listen. I’m not saying this to hurt you, but that boy left you crying on the porch in the cold, that sends a message. Don’t you think you two need space?”
The younger woman shakes her head stubbornly, looking forward to the door, refusing to look at V. “No. Space will let him spiral. My parents made him doubt me, I’m gonna show him that they don’t know what they’re talking about, that I’m what he wants and needs, no matter what they say.”
Determined, Charlotte makes her way next door, unlocking the door with V’s keys and gets to work immediately. Frank is passed out on the couch, so she nudges him awake with a beer at the ready, guiding the drunken man out of the door so he won’t be there when everyone wakes up. Next she starts on the bacon and eggs, brewing a cup of coffee before climbing the stairs to grab Liam, changing and dressing him. “G’morning Liam, did you sleep well?” she coos, pressing kisses to his cheeks as she makes her way back down the stairs.
When she gets down there, Fiona is sitting at the table, eyes going wide as she sees her sister-in-law. “Lottie? I…when did-”
“Early this morning. I know yesterday was really weird, and I’m sorry you guys had to see that-”
“Hey,” Fiona smiles, taking Liam from Charlotte’s arms. “There’s no embarrassment with family. Gallaghers know no shame, girl, and you’re one of us.”
And she means it. Fiona watches as a wave of relief washes over the girl bustling around her kitchen, dumping fresh bacon onto a plate. “Thanks Fi.” Charlotte tucks some hair behind her ear, sliding a bowl of cheerios in front of the toddler. “I’m sorry to even ask you this, but did he talk to you about anything? Like something they said or s-something I did-”
“Mornin.”
The deep voice makes Charlotte’s heart drop to her stomach. She turns slowly, as if she’s approaching an animal that’s likely to scare. And there he is. Standing there in his pajamas, hair mussed, bags under his eyes. But still handsome as ever to Charlotte. “Phillip.”
The blond pauses for a beat. His blue eyes are cloudy for a moment as he takes in the girl before he slips past her, ignoring her extended hand, offering a mug of coffee, opting to open the fridge and grab the orange juice instead. “Hey, you come here to pick up your stuff?”
“My…my stuff? Phillip-”
“I uh, gotta get to work.” he sniffs, grabbing his bag from it’s place on the kitchen floor, slinging it over his shoulder with his jacket in his hand.
“But-” Charlotte flinches as the door slams shut, shoulders tense as she stares after her husband. Fiona quietly slips behind the girl, resting her hand on her shoulder, apologetic for her brother’s behavior, but unable to do anything about it. “He means it.”
Charlotte had whispered so quietly that her sister-in-law didn’t catch it, leaning in for clarity. “What?”
“Phillip, he’s leaving me, and he means it.” It was like a rock landed in her stomach, both painful and grounding, Charlotte steels herself. “Fine.” she huffs, grabbing her own bag and storming out of the house, slamming the door shut behind her.
Phillip’s day had been absolute shit so far. He woke up to his boss’s daddy’s assistant calling him in for a meeting. No doubt calling him in to fucking fire him for beating the living shit out of his pussy ass son. Lip doesn’t regret it. Not really. But he regrets losing his fucking job.
On top of that, he came downstairs to see the one person he couldn’t handle seeing. She looked so damn pretty, mixing up in his kitchen, bein’ with his family and shit. The hopeful look in her eye as she saw him enter the room. He didn’t deserve for her to fuckin’ look at him like that. He wanted to kick his own ass for how broken her pretty little face looked when he dismissed her. He loves her. That’s why he’s doing this. Her eyes were pink and puffy. She’d been crying for him. The fact that he was fighting with himself not to like that…he’s a sick fuck. Like he’s said, he doesn’t deserve her.
Lip doesn’t even bother asking Kev to use his car to get to work, opting to take a walk to the train station to clear his head. He was in no real rush to be fired. As he blows into his hands to warm them, he lets his mind wander to the last place it needs to, but the only place it seems to want to go.
“So, what the fuck are they mad at her for? They don’t wanna do the band shit anymore?”
Charlotte giggles, running her fingers through his curls as he lays his head on her lap, scowling at the television. She was educating him on Disney movies; it seemed that in the process of raising his siblings along with his sister, he’d never gotten the chance to experience sitcoms and original movies that were formative for her childhood. He’d said, ‘I’m not watchin’, put your shit on and I’ll take a nap’ but here he was, watching intently with a wonder that made her heart ache. “Guess they don’t have your work ethic, bubba.”
Lip hums contentedly, bringing her free hand to his lips, absently pressing kisses to her palm as he continues watching the movie. “Yeah, I know you liked her little rapping white boyfriend.”
“Um, excuse me? Even though he’s cute-”
“Knew it.”
“And you happen to also be a white, blonde with blue hair, most of my exes haven’t been white, I’ll have you know.”
He tried to swallow down the comment, really. But he fuckin’ couldn’t hold himself back, sue him. “Yeah, how many exes are we talkin’ about?”
He expects for her to get offended, or be evasive. Tell him to fuck off. That’s what any of his sorta exes would’ve done. Hell, that’s what he would’ve done. With anyone but her. He’ll tell her whatever she needs to know. But Charlotte has soft edges. Even when he’s being a dick, she has softness for him he’d never experienced before.
“Not many, baby, just like, five.” She smiles gently, smoothing her hand over his hair again. “You’re the only one who matters now, Phillip.” she takes a deep breath, leaning down to press her forehead against his, and Lip can’t help but lean up to meet her, eyes trained on her face as hers slip closed. “Love you.” she mumbles.
She’s everything. “I love you, Bunny.”
With that, her brown eyes open, staring down at him with joy, she wrinkles her nose. “Ew, you like me?” she teases, squealing in his ear as he pushes himself up, grabbing her thigh and tugging her down on the couch.
“Fuckin’ brat.” he chuckles breathily against her lips, slapping her thigh lightly as he descends on her, her giggles ringing out into the air.
“Fuck.” the blond huffs out, roughly wiping at a stray tear before storming up to an abandoned car, left on the frozen grass and kicking at one of the doors, denting it slightly. He breathes heavily, shaking his head and turning to go back to his path to the train. Her laughter. That fuckin’ pretty ass laugh that she’s gonna end up giving to someone else makes him feel like he could vomit. He could hear it. In his head. It used to be nice. Now it feels like his heart is being wrenched from his fuckin’ chest. Damnit!
Lip drops his bag onto the ground, lifting his leg and kicking the car again. And again. And again. Until he stops. Then, he starts punching the windows, his knuckles start getting bloody as the glass shatters and breaks under his efforts. But he keeps going. He just keeps punching, and kicking, and screaming…? When did he start doing that?
He was so focused on what he was doing that he didn’t even notice someone approaching him.
“Lip…?” A familiar voice calls out. Familiar, but not the one haunting him now. “Well, it’s been a while, I can guess how you’ve been.”
He stops, turning to look at the person intruding on his break down, brows furrowed. The blond reaches in his pocket and pulls out a pack of cigarettes, raising it to pluck one into his mouth before offering it to them. “The fuck are you doin’ here?”
“Needed a nice bed, and food. Came to check on my mom. Aren’t you gonna ask me how I’ve been doin’?”
To say Charlotte was pissed off was an understatement. Hot, angry tears stream down her face as she swings open the door to V and Kev’s house, throwing her purse on the floor. She tries to level out her breath as she pushes into the bathroom. Charlotte rests her hands on the sink as she watches herself cry in the mirror. Sobs racking her body she doubles over with the force of her crying. She was glad no one was home to see her like this.
She doesn’t even know what she’s doing when she climbs into the tub, bringing her knees to her chest. She raises her left hand to look at the small ring on her finger. It’s not what she used to picture. When she was younger, she would envision her life. She would dream about what her ring would look like. What her husband would be like.
It was always a ring like her mother’s, a large house like she grew up in and the some faceless prince who spun her in circles but surprisingly never spoke.
This life she was building with Phillip was nothing like that. They live in a small house with his siblings, he’d shared a room until he was 18 and got her ring from his drunken father. It was small, and wouldn’t pass as a kids toy where she came from. Phillip was quiet compared to his siblings, but generally loud, crass, and aggressive. With everyone except her at least. He was a prince. He does spin her around, and hug her, and kiss her and look at her like she’s everything. The life he gave her was better than she’d imagined.
But he’s ready to throw it away. And it hurts. Charlotte is tired of being the one being hurt.
She sits in silence for a few moments, staring at the tiles on the wall before she can distantly hear her phone chiming in her purse outside the bathroom door. She tries to ignore the clench in her chest, the little glimmer of hope that it’s Phillip, calling to say sorry, that he’d changed his mind and he was coming over so they could make up. Charlotte pushes out of the tub at the third chime, walking on unsteady legs over to the bag, sniffling and tucking hair behind her ear as she squints to read the messages.
It’s her manager from the club, asking if anyone was interested in working the day party for today because the promoter’s entertainment fell through. Normally, she’d turn this down. She knows how Lip feels about her new job, and for her it was only a means to an end. They were discussing alternatives until this shit started. But maybe working a party would be a good way for her to get her mind off of things, and make some extra cash. Especially since it seems she’ll be doing things by herself for now on.
“So you got married? That wasn’t a joke?”
“Uh, nope, real shit.” Lip takes a final swig of his beer before sailing it into the street, smiling softly at the glass shattering before opening another.
“Hm, never thought you were the marrying type.”
“M’not.”
Karen shrugs, sipping her own beer and looking up at him. “Must’ve been pretty though, to get you down the aisle. Or pregnant. Both?”
“Not pregnant.” He says, opening his phone and showing her a picture of Charlotte. He supposes he’s gonna have to stop having those at the ready, if he’s gonna move on. As if he could.
“Damn, she’s sexy.” Karen’s eyes widen as she grabs the phone. She remembers the current situation and bites her lip. “Sorry.”
“S’fine. She is. Fuckin’ beautiful.”
Karen looks out into the road again, hesitating for a moment before nudging Lip’s shoulder. “Want me to take your mind off of it? It’s been a while.”
Before Lip had even met Charlotte he had told himself he’d never fuck Karen again. She’s better now, sure, but she also almost fucking ruined his life multiple times. Once he had met Charlotte, he hadn’t even thought of it. He really didn’t consider that he’d ever fuck someone else again. A realization that surprised himself more than anyone, considering he’d never been the monogamous type.
But now he’s in pain. And he doesn’t think he’ll ever be with Charlotte again. That makes him feel cold in a way that he’s never felt before. Lip, desperate for any kind of break he can get from what he’s feeling, rolls his eyes to the sky. “Yeah, fuck it, why not.”
“Gee, you used to be a lot more excited for me to get you off.” she mumbles against his cheek before leaning in to kiss his lips.
Lip turns his head away, pulling his mouth from her reach, “Don’t um, kiss me.”
Karen looks at him for a moment before laughing. “Okay, kissing used to be your thing, not mine.” As she kneels in front of him, Lip finds himself squirming uncomfortably, looking everywhere but down when he feels her unzipping his pants. “Um…are you…is it like, too cold?”
“Uh, no, I’m…gimme a second.” He feels like he can’t breath, the ring on his finger feels like it’s literally fucking scalding his skin.
“Oh-kay.”
A few more moments pass and Karen speaks again. “Do you want me to help you? Is there anything I can do?”
“Nope, no, not at all. Just, shut up for one second, please.” He brings his hands together, tugging the ring off and putting it in his pocket and prays.
“You can think of her if you need to. I don’t mind.” she tries again.
“Um, yeah, maybe.” He squeezes his eyes shut tightly, and lets the images of Charlotte that he’s racked up over time run across his brain. It feels good to think of her. To sift through the memories of her smiling up at him, holding him close, crying out his name. But he couldn’t trick his mind or body. He’s in love. Still. And she’s not the girl on her knees in front of him. “No, no.”
“No?”
“Yeah, sorry, I can’t I’m…I don’t think I can fuck someone who’s not my wife. At least right now.” Or ever. Shit. I’m never gonna get my dick wet again.
“Jeez, that’s serious.” Karen says. She hops up, tucking her hands in her pockets. “What is she? A contortionist?” Lip just looks at her and she sobers, her smile dropping. “Sorry. I’m serious. I’m talking to you as a friend, talk to me. Your wife is hot, and nice, and clearly has a hold over your dick, so what’s the problem, why’d you leave her?”
“She’s perfect.” Lip sighs, lighting another cigarette, the muscle in his jaw jumping as he works back the lump in his throat. He’ll be damned if he cries about this in front of Karen.
“Okay so-”
“She’s perfect. She’s everything, she deserves everything and I am stuck here. I live here. I was born here, I’m gonna live and die here and I don’t want her here to do it with me. So I can’t have her, that’s fine I’m teaching myself that it's fine but it fuckin’ sucks! It fuckin’ sucks Karen, and it’s fuckin’ worse because she’s willing to stay. I hate her for not making this easy!” He roughly throws the bottle into the street, barely missing a parked car.
“Oof. Okay. Clearly, you need to get your mind off of things.” She says, scooting the remainder of the six pack the pair of them bought from the liquor store across the street away from him. “C’mon, let’s get you a real drink and some recreational drugs.”
“You’re making some good tips out there girl, they’re loving you at this party.”
Charlotte smiles briefly before leaning over the vanity, reapplying her lip gloss in the mirror.
“Of course they are, they’re actually seeing her. Normally, guests only get a glimpse of the back of her head, before she runs into the back again to check in with her man.”
“Well, he won’t be checking in today, so-”
“What?”
Trish leans back in her own seat to look at her friend. “Did something happen with you and Lip?”
Charlotte tries to ignore the quiver in her lip and stare forward into the mirror, focusing on the pink she’s applying on her lips. “I dunno, he’s doing his own thing, I’m doing mine, I guess.”
“Well, that seems-”
“Girl, about time!” Kelsey, one of the girls Charlotte met through the club, claps, pushing her way into Charlotte’s seat. “All you talk about is that man and his gaggle of kids. Now, we can invite you to do fun stuff. We can go out!”
“They’re his siblings, first of all and they’re good kids.” Charlotte sighs, smoothing her hands over her hair.
“Gallagher kids? Okay.”
Charlotte’s eyes narrow, her mouth opening for her to ask her co-worker what the fuck she meant by that, something she would’ve never done a couple of months ago. But Trish beats her to it, patting her arm and shaking her head. Instead of telling her other coworkers about herself, Charlotte settles for rolling her eyes and mumbling, “We could’ve always gone out.”
“Please, the way you used to all but trip over yourself running out the door to climb back on Lip’s dick? When would we have the time to ask?”
“There’s nothing wrong with the girl loving her man, Renee.” Trish intervenes, leaving her arm tossed around Charlotte’s shoulders. Was she really that pathetic? Did she really spend all her time running behind Phillip? She supposes that she never took the time to think about it while it was happening, but is this what everyone thinks? “Just because you don’t have one.”
“Well,” Kelsey shrugs, rubbing more glitter lotion onto her chest and meeting Charlotte’s eyes in the mirror. “Doesn’t seem like Lottie does either anymore. So, Lottie, have you dislodged yourself from Gallagher’s side or not? Are we going out”
Charlotte fully plans to say yes. For the first time since she’d met her husband, she thought that maybe this is what she should have been doing. She’s only ever had two identities in her life. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher’s daughter, and Phillip Gallagher’s wife. She’s never been Charlotte. Not when she left home, not when she got her first job, she just went from being one person’s possession to another. Maybe this is all a sign that she should focus on being alone. However miserable that sounds. That’s why, whether you believe her or not, she was going to say yes.
Until her phone rings.
“What’d you even give him anyway?”
“Don’t fucking make it sound like that, it was just some weed and booze!”
“Fuckin’ weed and booze, he’s on his fuckin’ ass Karen! Fuckin’ idiot!”
“Fuck you! How was I supposed to know he drinks and smokes like a little bitch now?” the blonde girl huffs loudly as she turns back to the drunk man in front of them, barely intelligible as he slams his hands down on the bar again, demanding to be served another drink. “Lip, seriously, we need to fuckin’ go-”
“Get the fuck off me, I’m married.”
The bar owner emerges from the back again, his cellphone in hand, a scowl on his face. “Aye, Gallagher, she’s takin’ too long, he’s scaring the real customers, get him outta here before I gotta call the cops.”
Ian groans, running his hand down his face, “Yeah, good luck cleanin’ up all the coke you’ve got on these tables before they get here. Fuck off, your place is a dive, Billy.” Turning back to his brother, the redhead, tugs his arm, making the shorter brother stumble but ultimately not moving him at all. “Lip, come the fuck on man.”
“Just fuckin’ leave me alone. Not listenin’ fuckin’ idiot-” he slurs, shoving Ian a little before grabbing a half drunk beer from the bar and downing it.
“God-fuckin’-damnit-” Ian growls snatching the already empty bottles. His brown eyes catch on something over at the door and his tense stance settles. “Thank god.” he mumbles under his breath.
Karen’s eyes follow his over to a woman who looks just like the one Lip had shown her earlier, a tense, concerned look on her pretty face. Her cheeks dimple as her lips turn down into a frown upon spotting the spectacle in front of her. Her hair is tied up into a clean bun, her body covered with a matching sweat suit. Her eyes look exhausted. So that’s the wife?
“Phillip-”
“Bunny, you’re here, come drink with me, baby.” The blond offers her a crooked, drunk smile that has the same knee weakening effect on both women. His muscled arm shoots out, wrapping around the girl’s waist and tugging her to him, all but dragging her into his lap.
“No, Phillip, it’s time to go home. Let’s get you up.”
Big blue eyes roll closed, his forehead falling forward, uncoordinatedly thunking against the woman’s forehead. She doesn’t flinch, just keeping her tired, sad eyes on him as he inhales deeply, breathing her in. “We gonna go home together?”
It’s the softest voice Karen has ever heard the eldest Gallagher son use. He’d spoken to her softly before. They’d been best friends, lovers. He was always scared of her leaving…rightfully so. But this, it was like he was scared that she was going to break if he rose his voice too much. It was like he was whispering a secret that’s just for them and everyone else in the room is intruding. Karen hadn’t ever seen anything like it. She likes this for him.
The girl was ordering water, grabbing a straw from over the bar and guiding it to Lip’s mouth as he stayed close, rubbing his hands along her hips and mumbling about missing her between gulps. She hadn’t even looked at Karen, her eyes had locked on Lip since arriving. “Um, I’m Karen by the way.”
Big brown eyes finally take her in. There’s no disdain behind them. No hate. She doesn’t look at her like every other girl who’s ever loved Lip has looked at Karen. She just offers a tired look. Glossed lips parting briefly, snapping shut again when she feels the Lip’s head droop forward onto her shoulder, quick hands shooting up to cup the back of his curls. “I’m Charlotte. I’ve got to get him home, are you okay?”
“I’m..I’m sorry?”
Charlotte bites her lower lip in determination as she pats his cheek, getting him to stir awake again. Her eyes never return to acknowledge Karen. “Up, Bubba, up. Are you okay to get home? I…need to take him home, are you okay?”
Oh. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Okay, Ian, can you please help him, help him stand?” Karen watches as this woman, Charlotte helps hoist Lip’s weight onto Ian, the redhead slinging his brother’s arm over his shoulder, nodding at Karen as they make their way out of the bar with her…ex? Best friend?
She can’t help but compare herself to the girl. She knew that they were both pretty, generally attractive in different ways. Both short. Big eyes. Round faces. Their difference physically was glaringly obvious, but that wasn’t what mattered. It was in the eyes. Everything is in the eyes. Not the color, but the looks.
When the evening started to turn sour, Karen had been fucking annoyed. She hates babysitting. Hates having to take care of people. That’s why she’s always loved being around Lip in one way or another. That’s why they’d been such good friends. He was the caretaker. He takes care of people. His family, neighborhood kids, her. He doesn’t ask for anything for himself aside from the occasional blowie, and it was mostly a joke.
Until he asked for more. Until he asked for love, attention and care and a partner. Things that Karen had no interest in. Things that crazy bitch Mandy wasn’t able to give him. He needed too much. He went from something easy to do, someone easy to be around to being this person who needs things.
It was hard, too hard. Being with Lip is exactly the daunting task people think it would be. But Charlotte, his wife, she’s doing it. She looks exhausted, pissed off, and just caught her husband hanging out with his ex. But she came. She managed to unclench her jaw and offer him a soft look and kind voice.
Karen had been poison to him. She knows that. She was bad for him, and to be honest, she’d thought that even with the time had passed he wouldn’t have been strong enough to get her out of his system. But, she should have known better than to underestimate Lip Gallagher. He found something good. Someone for him.
Good for him.
“I know you’re mad at’me.”
“Shut up, man, you’re just gonna make stuff worse.”
“M’talkin to my wife, motherfucker, you shut up.” Lip slurs as Ian all but drags him down the street. “Sweetheart-”
“Phillip, please.” Charlotte begs, voice cracking as she refuses to turn around and face him. Her arms are wrapped tightly around her own form, walking several paces ahead of the Gallagher brothers up the dark road. “Please.”
It had been going on since they started walking. He keeps trying to talk to her. He keeps calling her all of these sweet names and they fucking hurt. They hurt like him telling her that they could get their marriage annulled. They hurt like him telling her to go with her parents. They fucking hurt like him let her sit on his front porch crying and begging just to see him as he sat on the other side of the door. And now, she understands that he’s drunk or high or whatever, but she needs him to stop talking.
Her plea is answered with the silence she asked for. Shocked that he actually went silent, Charlotte whips around to see if he’d fallen asleep, but is met with big blue eyes with dilated pupils, brows softened as he meets her shaky gaze.
The woman turns around so he can’t see her chin tremble as she leads the group onto the streets. Another voice breaks the silence, over the sound of three sets of footsteps, only one set steady, the other two, sloppy and wavering. “Lottie, what do you wanna do?”
She knows what he’s asking. They’re rounding their homes. Where should he put him? Is she going to stay with him? And she immediately feels shame wash over herself. She knows the answers to all of those questions. She should be embarrassed. This man has treated her like shit over the last 24 hours. She hates how he made her feel about herself. She didn’t understand how he could be both the man who strolled past her as if he didn’t know her this morning and the one who was just looking at her the way he did.
But she’s weak, and he’s everything.
And she’s already shifting his weight from his brother's arms into hers, stumbling a little under it as she guides him toward her cousin’s house.
“Charlotte.”
“It’s okay.” she breathes. “I’ve got him.”
And she struggles getting him to the door. He tries to help, she can tell. But he’s too fucked up, his motor skills are lacking and only set back any progress she makes. She grips the railing with her spare hand as she helps him up the last step. She tells him to watch his step as she leads him through the doorway, eyes locking V’s as the wooden floors creak under his steps. She ignores the disappointed look on her cousin’s face as she guides her husband to her room. Their room.
But as she pulls the shoes from his feet and helps him into bed, she’s confident in one thing. Charlotte knows she loves this man. It doesn’t matter what everyone else thinks the breaking point should be, or who they envision her with. She wants him. And she was going to keep acting like it.
Charlotte feels a tightness around her waist as she wakes up in the chair she’d dragged into the bedroom once she’d gotten Phillip settled. Her eyes are already watering as they peel open, burning from tears and exhaustion.
“I fucked up, Bunny.”
“Yeah,” Charlotte sighs, sniffling a little and letting her head drop back against the wall. “How bad?”
“I fuckin’ hurt you-” his voice is muffled against her stomach, his arms tightening around her, fingers squeeing and releasing the fabric of her shirt.
“Yes.”
“I hate that. M’just fucked up, y’know? But m’sorry, baby, m’sorry.”
Charlotte is annoyed by the sob that leaves her body involuntarily, causing him to pull her even closer to him, her butt almost hanging off of the chair. She’s even more annoyed that she’s wondering if his knees hurt from kneeling on the floor in front of her. She shouldn’t care. “You left me outs-side alone.”
“I know, baby, I know.” she feels a wet spot forming on her shirt and tries to stop her lower lip from shaking. “Fuckin’ supposed to be taking care of you. I’m a shitty husband, you deserve better. And I’m trying to be that, I swear, Charlotte I fuckin’ swear. I…I’m gettin’ to keep my job, and m’gonna save more, gonna get us some more money, just gimme a little more time, sweetheart. I know this fuckin’ sucks, but I’m gonna do better-”
“You’re hurting me.” Charlotte mumbles, staring up at the ceiling, letting the tears freely fall down her cheeks.
Suddenly his arms are gone from her waist and he’s staring up at her, frantically running his hands through his curls. “M’sorry, I was holding you too tight-”
“Have I done anything to make you believe I won’t wait? Have I cheated on you? Made you feel bad about not having a house for us? Buying a car right now? Anything? What did I do to deserve you telling me you didn’t want to be with me anymore? Stop hurting me!” She finishes with a stomp, feeling childish. Lip is quiet as he listens to her, his hand running along her thigh in soothing strokes.
“You’re perfect. You didn’t do anything, Charlotte. That’s why I was fuckin’ tryin’ to do the right thing.” Lip huffs, clenching his jaw anxiously. “I was tryin’ to give you up. Because there’s somethin’ wrong with me Charlotte. I can’t get out of my head. Everyday I wake up and hear how too fuckin’ good for me on loop in my head, and then people remind me, and I can say fuck ‘em, they’re not you, I don’t care what they think, but then your parents came-”
“Fuck them too.”
“No,” Lip pushes up off the floor and paces in the room. “Not fuck them, because yes, they’re fuckin’ assholes, but they made you, and you’re fuckin’ everything, so they are pretty much the authority on what’s good shit and what isn’t. I don’t deserve you, they know it, I know it, for some fuckin’ reason, you don’t know it, so let me make this clear for you, Bunny. This shit shouldn’t be so hard. I’m hurting you. That’s not what being in love with you feels like for me. My love for you isn’t good enough, because it’s making you suffer. Being in love with you gives me a fuckin’ reason to breathe. So I was trying to be fuckin’ good. And let you go.”
Charlotte watches as he finishes, standing in front of her. Blue eyes bloodshot. The veins in his neck popping out, his chest rising and falling with effort. He looks so serious. And all she can do is laugh. Literally, put her head in her hands and laugh.
“Um…what the fuck?” he asks incredulously, watching her shoulders shake with her laughter.
“You’re such an asshole, Phillip.” she giggles, wiping her wet cheeks, gasping in an attempt to stop her own laughter.
“I’m really not fuckin’ gettin’ the joke here.”
Charlotte shakes her head, crossing her legs as she sits up fully in the chair, trying not to break at the confusion on his face. “Don’t you think it’s a little too late for you to decide that you want to save me the trouble of being in love with you? You pursued me, you asked me to marry you, you made me love you and it's too late. I’m stuck. You leave, I’m still hurt. You stay, you can choose to man up, make good on your promises, stop feeling sorry for yourself and be a good husband. You want to stop hurting me, then stop hurting me. Stop talking about me deserving better and be better.”
The couple stares at each other from across the room, nothing but white noise from the house fills the air as Charlotte’s challenge hangs between them. A few beats pass before Lip begins slightly nodding his head, the same focused face he keeps when he’s working on a project from work, or doing people’s taxes for extra money. Lip smooths his hand over his jaw, clearing his throat. “Okay. I’ll be better.”
“Okay.”
“Can I…uh, hold on a second.” The blond murmurs, crossing the floor and places his hand on her jaw, dragging her up into a deep kiss, absolutely breathing her in as he nearly pushes her chair back with the force he pushes against her. He breaks away only lightly, his lips against hers, as he speaks. “I love you. I’ll be better.”
“I love you too.” she smiles. “And I know.”
This is good…this is better. I’ll deal with the rest later.

“So that’s the menu.” Mikey rose up and dusted his hands.
You leaned against a counter getting some time upright and nodded over the messy handwritten note cards Mikey had brought over. Coated in loving use and old ingredients, Mikey had clearly been fine tuning these recipes for years. They felt to you like precious artifacts with their ancient evolving notes. Moving them around affectionately and wondering how many total of these cards there were, you tipped your head towards the turtle. “How are you going to bring all this over?”
“So, we got ingredients purchased and being delivered to an agreed upon location first thing tomorrow.” Mikey paused to give a raised hand to Donnie for his participation.
Donnie, who had been writing some code on his computer, scarcely looked over.
“I’ll take everything down, start placing my mise and then head over here for my regular shift around noon to cook it up.” Mikey fanned out the cards once before sliding them back into a fold. “If I did my math right then everything will be ready for dinner at 6:30pm sharp and our guests will arrive.”
You nodded, thinking over the process.
“I’ll have my assistant in spurts.” Mikey winked at you.
You rolled your eyes. “I’m sworn to rest when I need to. I get it, but I’m not letting you do everything.”
“Everyone has different kitchen dynamics.” Mikey chirped happily. “I love seeing how they all mix and our cooking chemistry though, like 90% of the time, I default to get out of my way!”
You laughed along with him. “I get that.”
“Having someone you can deal with in your space in that kind of heated situation is a big deal.” Mikey wiggled his brow ridge around his pun.
You hummed affectionately and remembered one particular time with Donnie. “Is that so?”
“Oh yeah, gotta be a marker of true love.” Mikey picked his cards and was slow to take on a forlorn look. “This is it…”
“Yeah…” You straightened a little yourself.
The family dinner marked the end of the Hamato watch. Though it hadn’t been officially discussed, you knew Mikey had passed on the information about Donnie meditating and Raph had obviously reported Donnie’s first time disengaging his powers. It had been a good sign and just about every person who’d entered the apartment since had seen some form of Donnie’s practice. The little purple particles that would percolate at a certain focused step were unmistakable. Whether Donnie was testing his emotions to manifest them or simply working on their creation, you had yet to know, but since he’d gone weeks without a single mishap, he was deemed safe enough to be left to his own devices.
Leo was just a portal away if anything went wrong.
You dampened more thinking about the blue brother. You guessed this was how it was now. You weren’t going to repair things with Leo and, after tomorrow, you never would have another chance to. You wouldn’t see him again and he would be an emergency contact at most. It stung. You knew it was probably for the best, but leaving whatever your relationship was with him in such disrepair deeply bothered you. You guessed you had others like this, people from your past that you were doomed to only have a negative memory of, but it ached regardless.
“Michelangelo.”
That was Donnie’s voice and you raised your head where your back was to him.
“Yup?”
Leo would be next and then Raph before Mikey returned for his final watch.
“I want to meet with him.”
You almost didn’t want Mikey to leave.
“…”
Maybe you could ask Raph to switch so you could sleep through most of Leo’s shift.
“Well?”
“Why?”
You blinked.
“Obvious.” You turned to find Donnie with narrowed eyes, but little heat as if he found the exchange tenuous.
“If it was, I wouldn’t have asked.” Mikey bit back with a similar lack of heat, but faint irritation.
You didn’t interject, but sent confusion toward your mate who didn’t look.
“I need to… speak with… him.” Donnie swallowed bile.
“About what? Why now?” Mikey folded his arms.
Now on one crutch, you moved from where you were leaning your weight on the counter and hooked it with learned ease to your body to go over to Donnie.
The movement caught his eye and he watched you with his closed off affection.
“If I could discuss the matter with any of you, I would have.” Donnie told you, though he spoke to Mikey.
You heard Mikey unfurl with a huff.
You tilted your head in question.
Donnie’s eyes had little response.
Mikey made an upset sound.
Donnie’s lip moved a centimeter which was the most smile you could get under these circumstances.
“He can come to dinner.”
Donnie’s head flew to Mikey in fury. “A joke!”
“Nope.” Mikey’s brow ridge bobbed, smug. “Not a question either. That’s the only way I’ll pass the message along.”
“This conversation is not for any of you!” Donnie’s lip curled back, but it was obviously out of tender fear as opposed to actual anger.
“I’ll head out when it's time.” Mikey’s shoulders bounced. “Give you space.”
“Not for…” Donnie trailed off and looked at you in a similarly anxious way.
You weren’t meant to listen either.
You frowned.
Donnie’s gaze shot away in a pained way.
“We’ll.” Mikey was quick to add. “Step out.”
You looked to Mikey.
He nodded to you for encouragement.
“You need to talk to Splinter that badly?” You asked quietly.
Donnie flinched at the name and his wounded gaze stayed glued to the floor.
Mikey bent his elbows to the counter and waited.
“Yes.” Donnie spoke as small as he could.
Your chest tightened.
You knew you’d been keeping things from Donnie, but to hear the inkling that he was doing the same felt like a new wound.
It wasn’t on purpose, you wanted to scream.
You were going to unload on him as soon as you were alone.
That meant he probably would too.
The realization sobering, you leaned heavily into your crutch.
One more day.
“Dinner. The whole dinner. You don’t get to kick dad out after just because you feel like it.” Mikey laid down his ground rules.
This time Donnie surfaced slowly and with actual anger. “You expect me to entertain that-” He bit his tongue to keep a derogatory word out of his mouth. “-in my own home?!”
“You’re doing that with us, aren’t you?” Mikey spoke without malice.
The younger turtle even seemed oddly stoic.
He almost looked like Donnie when slipped all of himself under that emotionless mask.
Donnie’s eyes only narrowed.
“It’s either that or you try Leo, which, good fucking luck. Then there’s Raph and we both know how that’s going to go.” Mikey’s head cricked with the slightest tip.
Donnie inhaled slowly.
“You asked me for a reason.” Mikey spoke knowingly.
Donnie juggled something mentally before looking back to Mikey. “I did.”
“My terms or nothing.” Mikey lifted up and out of the conversation.
He walked over to where Leo’s portal would appear.
You saw that, as soon as Mikey’s back was turned, Donnie let a whole litany of emotions pass over his face.
There was outright fury.
You could see how much he wanted to strangle the other turtle.
There was bargaining.
He tried to work out a thousand ways he could get out of this.
There was anxiety.
The chance to speak to Splinter was slipping through his fingers and you could see just how much your boyfriend needed to do this.
You touched Donnie’s arm lightly.
He jarred from his swirling mind and you saw the whirlpool settle at the sight of you.
Another tap was more of a nudge.
You had his back.
You could take the verbal heat off if need be.
You could be Splinter’s chaperone.
Donnie’s expression welled with gratitude before he looked back to where Mikey still had his carapace to you both.
“Done. Do ask-” Donnie’s voice was gravel.
“For him to be on his best behavior?” Mikey cut Donnie off with a turn of his head that just barely showed his face’s silhouette. “I’ll ask him. I’ll do what I can, but he’s my dad.”
Leo’s portal appeared and the blue light reflected off Mikey’s eyes for a malevolent gaze.
“Our dad. The three of us.” Mikey spoke venom. “Don’t you forget.” He stepped through the portal.
-
The rest of the time until Mikey’s return was done in a preparatory wait. Leo had appeared casual with a levity that said he was ready to get this last shift over with. You imagined that he might even enjoy the dinner since it was a final blemish for him to endure. Skirting away from him to keep the mood light, you had very little to do. You mostly stuck close to Donnie who was trapped with the weight of what was coming.
Your mate stood in various parts of your apartment with nothing to keep his hands busy and eventually you coaxed him out of sight where you lingered in his space. Sneaking behind a partition felt juvenile in your own home, but you signed to each other regardless.
‘Why now?’ You started.
‘Can’t explain like this.’
‘Later? Alone?’
‘Both of us.’
‘I’ve been planning to.’
‘Good. You’ve been avoiding Blue.’
‘Yeah. Long story.’
Donnie made the motion for ‘kill’ and raised his brow with delighted question.
You shook your head and placed both your hands over his.
He brought them up to his lips.
You mouthed, ‘I can’t wait to be alone with you.’
“Me too.” He murmured warmth and came down to press the side of his head to yours.
You lingered like that as long as you could.
-
You did your best, but the closer it got to Mikey’s and subsequently all the turtle’s final appearance in your home, Donnie’s stress was transferring to you. With each second hand tick of the clock, Donnie got more on edge. You meant to be strong for him. You wanted to show him that this was alright; that even though you didn’t know what big thing he wanted to discuss with Splinter was, you would be unflappable.
The only problem was, you were painfully in tune with your partner and him being upset was then permeating you through your bond.
You hated to see him uncomfortable and, though Raph recognized the dense air in the room, you could tell the older turtle was mislabeling it. All four men hadn’t been in the same room since the hospital discharge. You imagined Raph, rightfully, imagined the entire bale together bothered Donnie, especially in his own home. If there wasn’t some big talk added on top, you were sure that would have upset Donnie too, but you found it hard to believe that would have driven him to his current state.
You guessed Raph might have also thought Donnie was concerned to then be alone with his ninpo.
You hadn’t gotten to talk to the older turtle and now still wasn’t the best time because he was just as distracted as you in watching Donnie move about like a stubborn plant searching for a crack of sunlight. In slow rotations, Donnie swayed, barely perceptible and feeling out his space blindly. He couldn’t do an activity because he was too emotionally confined to the pot, but he was deprived of something vital which had him wriggling with all his remaining strength.
You could hardly breathe by the time Leo’s portal appeared.
Raph was up and prattling on about lending a hand just to have an excuse to leave.
In a file, you watched as Mikey and Raph carted a bunch of food, pots, pans, utensils, and other kitchen gadgets in until your home was overflowing. Donnie made space on his desk and helped arrange the spill before Raph turned with his hands on his hips.
“Alright. I got class and then me and Leo will come by right on time?”
“6:30.” Mikey swung a spoon to cement his point.
Raph threw his own finger up genially and spun on one leg to leave through the portal.
“Ah!” Mikey suddenly fussed and passed the spoon off to you. “Hold it! I have something else to grab! Forgot something! You know me!”
Donnie’s head shot up where he was clearly cataloging as everything had been accounted for thus far.
“Don’t spike the food!” Raph complained but pressed a hand up to the top half of the portal like he was holding a door.
“I’m not! In this house?!” Mikey shot you a wink out of Raph’s eye line before ducking through the blue light.
“Yeah, yeah.” Raph shook his head after Mikey. “See y’all.” He gave a parting nod and disappeared as well.
“There shouldn’t be-!” Donnie furiously searched for what was misplaced.
You were about to help when Mikey returned with two stumbling leaps and a bottle of soda in hand.
Donnie gave an irritated face.
Mikey shook his head. “This was just cause I saw it. I actually forgot…”
It brought Donnie’s brow up before there was a blur and the portal shut.
For a moment, you didn’t register a change.
Then Donnie inhaled sharply and went ramrod straight.
You looked to find Splinter standing where the portal was holding a baking dish wrapped in foil. With his eyes downcast and wearing a little cardigan, he looked the picture of trying to do his best.
Your heart squeezed and you were in motion with a clunk of your crutch. “Splinter.”
“Y/N!” He walked up with his dish and found it occupying his hands. “I was worried! The boys kept me updated. I’m glad to hear that you…” He breathed a bit unsteady. “I am sorry this happened to you.”
“Yeah…” You’d heard that more times then you could count. “It is what it is…”
“Still! Those police are an absolute joke! Useless! A waste! Morons!” Splinter huffed.
You couldn’t help but smile.
“Big Mama has been on a rampage.” Splinter told you casually before heading towards Mikey.
“Huh!? What?!” The younger turtle lowered himself to take the dish from his dad. “She what now!?”
“She was disrespected!” Splinter spoke as if this should be obvious news. “She has been methodically tearing down and restructuring the entire city center in her fury! So very her!”
“She’s…” You shook slightly in a rotation.
You looked to Donnie and couldn’t tell whether he knew that or not.
“Doing it for you!” Splinter threw a gesturing hand to you as soon as he was freed from his dish. “Oh, this is my very special green bean casserole, by the way! Also for you!”
“For…?” You took a few steps. “Wait, Big Mama can’t be doing that for me.”
“You, you.” Splinter waved a hand and looked around the packaged kitchen. “This place is too small!”
Mikey tapped his dad’s head with a spatula. “Don’t complain.”
“Hmph!” Splinter rotated. “You were her guest. Her new hotel’s poster couple! I’m surprised she hasn’t killed off and replaced the entire police department. Morons!”
He’d repeated himself, but the words didn’t seem real. “It didn’t seem like she liked me.”
“She likes you plenty! She wouldn’t do that for anyone!” Splinter turned, remembering something. “Put that in the fridge, orange!”
“I’m gonna be doing fridge Jenga, dad.” Mikey rolled his eyes. “Y/N, wanna help?”
“Uh, yeah!” You moved to set your crutch on a nearby counter.
Splinter saw he was in the way and scrambled a few nervous steps out of the kitchen.
As you passed him, you saw him keep his head down as if he wasn’t allowed to look around the living room proper.
Concern stuck to your features as Mikey held the fridge open for you.
Stepping around it, he used the door as a barrier for a private conversation.
You moved a few items in the icebox and gave a skeptical look as it would hide nothing.
He frowned and gave up trying to translate to instead focus on the task at hand. “How about I pass you perishables? That good?”
“Yeah. Standing in one place is easy. I’m just wobbly if I move too much.” You settled as a wedge in the fridge door as Mikey moved to pass things.
“It didn’t take too long to prep. I mean I’ve got a good few hours here so I wasn’t sweating.” He passed a few things over.
You methodically organized them.
“You’ll have to return my dear Tupperware.”
You paused in show of holding an old butter container that had something chopped inside.
“A family heirloom.” Mikey told you haughtily.
“Clearly.” You joked back and slipped it in.
Mikey walked you through the upcoming steps as you stuffed the fridge then freezer. When you came up with a semi-cleaned work surface, you glimpsed Splinter sitting on the couch near the closest arm and Donnie standing at a side angle near his desk. You imagined it would take some time for them to be able to approach each other and dove into the normalcy with Mikey. He ended up being a better teacher at cooking than meditation and walked you slowly through what you could best help with. In contrast, his own tasks disappeared in a flurry where he chatted casually as he moved around a full stove’s worth of burners and an active oven. You weren’t sure how he kept track of all the different cook times, but he seemed to know just when to move or extract something.
It had been at least an hour and you were casually washing some utensils for their third or fourth use when you heard Splinter’s voice. “You’ve made… quite the home.”
You didn’t hear Donnie respond and instead turned to Mikey who knowingly held up more dirty dishes.
With those soon cleaned, you moved on to oven Tetris for the many dishes that needed to be baked when you heard Donnie say something.
“You are still in contact with Big Mama.”
“Y/N!” Mikey blurred through your vision, moving faster than your eye to put the last pans in and slam the oven door shut for you. “You gotta look at this sunset!”
“Sun… set?” You blinked.
“Yeah!” Mikey slipped around you and opened the kitchen window.
“The sun doesn’t set for another-”
“It’s beautiful, you have to see!” As if it were a door, Mikey stepped right through the opening.
You stumbled a few steps after him in confusion and bit your lip on a noise when his arms shot out to grab you. In one perfect tipping lift, you were hoisted up and angled right through the window before you were set on the fire escape. “Wha-!?”
Mikey held a finger up to his lips and put great care in slowly closing the window.
When it was noiselessly shut he let out a big sigh.
“It’s time.” Mikey told you and then fell back to sit on a metal step.
“They’re talking?” You perked up.
“Yep. Not about to be a part of all that.” Mikey twirled a lazy finger and took a deep breath of city air. “Sky’s mostly blue.”
You leaned against the brick to look up. “Yeah…”
“It’s pretty.” Mikey murmured.
“Yeah.” You agreed.
For a long time you sat in the moment and let the bustle buzz as a dull hum until you made it over to Mikey. He moved aside to give you room and you both occupied the same step.
“Can you hear them?” You asked softly so as not to disrupt the moment.
“Nope.” Mikey tipped his head towards you. “Donnie’s got super glass or whatever he does.”
You snorted. “You’re going to slip up calling him that.”
“He can get me then.” Mikey threw up lazy fisticuffs.
“Thank you.”
“For saying I’ll fight him?” Mikey still had his arm’s akimbo and looked at you.
You bumped him with your shoulder, but left your body pressed to his. “For helping save me. For shortening my healing time. For teaching Donnie meditation. For making all this food. For getting Splinter...” You shook your head at the list. “For texting me about Donnie cooking.”
Mikey lightly chuffed and leaned a metered amount of his weight back. “I should thank you.”
“For what?” You looked at him.
You got to see up close how gooey his expression was when he turned to you. “For saving him.”
“I didn’t.” You shook your head. “He saved himself. I just got to watch.”
Mikey thought for a moment and returned. “Let me rephrase.”
“Go ahead.” You chuckled.
“Thank you for making him happy.”
Your heart jumped and you smiled brightly.
“Cute.” Mikey teased and leaned his carapace back on the steps.
You nudged him lightly where you couldn’t do the same and stared out at the darkening city until you felt a familiar pressure in your stomach. “Oh no…”
“What?” Mikey’s voice was sleepy.
“I have to pee.” You groaned and remembered how you’d been so on edge with Donnie many hours before Mikey had even arrived. That added to the current till, meant you hadn’t visited the bathroom since early that morning.
“Hold it!” Mikey sat up. “Do you know how rare this is!?”
“You think I don’t want to!? This was dropped on me the same time as you!”
“Yeah!” Mikey’s head shook with stress. “Stupid secret diner meetings with dad were not on my Donnie bingo card, but this marks the fourth time they’ve spoken ever! So I say again: hold it!”
“We have to go inside eventually!”
“Yeah, when the timers go off!”
Something beeped.
One single clear time.
“Mikey…”
Mikey paled.
“What was that!?”
“The… fifteen minute warning?” Mikey eeked out and went to grab his phone. “It’s 6:15…”
“We need to go inside!”
“We can wait!”
“Let’s just peek!”
“You peek!” Mikey scrambled up a step further from the window. “I’m not chancing nothing!”
You didn’t blame him in the slightest and inched forward slowly where your hips were weary. Nothing you couldn’t handle as you were a base level of sore as of late, you edged forward and carefully placed your fingers to the sill before hoisting yourself up to look inside. A clip of the counter blocked some of your vision, but you could see Donnie sitting with his back toward you and looking down the couch where you imagined Splinter was.
“What do you see?” Mikey was obviously impatient.
“I can only see Donnie, but there’s no signs of a fight. He’s just…” You stared hard at the back of your boyfriend’s head. “… sitting there.”
“That’s probably fine…?” Mikey seemed to be genuinely asking.
“Yeah…” Your crouch put further pressure on your bladder. “I’m opening the window.”
“Y/N!” Mikey clanged against the fire escape as he shied another step away.
“We have to go back in eventually! Everything will burn!” You pressed the jamb lightly before cracking it.
You felt the rush of air and the scent of food waft out, but little more.
Your heart beat fast in your chest and you moved to check with Mikey.
His eyes were a new kind of wide.
‘Bad?’ You mouthed as obviously as you could.
Mikey shook his head furiously.
Your abdomen pulsed.
You pushed the window further up.
Mikey caught your arm.
You wordlessly pulled from him.
His head shook so fast his hair was coming out of its tie.
You yanked to the side and both of you struggled in front of the window.
“Is it really possible to love someone who is evil?”
Both you and Mikey froze at the sound of Donnie’s voice
Then you were nearly beating each other to try to close to the window.
“I once told her I knew there was still good in her.” Splinter’s response came next.
You heard a dull sound.
Something indistinct and electronic.
Mikey’s eyes turned white and he disappeared from you.
Blinking into the empty fire escape, you swore you heard the faint sound of a timer in the distance.
That meant the food was done.
You had to go inside no matter what.
Stunned, you looked toward the window with your heart plummeting and pushed it all the way up so you could climb back inside.
“I was wrong!” Splinter’s voice cracked as your belly pressed against the sill, halfway through. “Still good!? What does that mean!? She never said anything, but she must have known. Why was I so hung up on the distinction? Good. Bad…” He heaved a heavy breath.
You nearly somersaulted over, but you channeled every ounce of your physical therapy and just barely saved yourself with a careful foot to the floor.
“Love does not know such things! I loved her in spite of everything. I loved her after she imprisoned me. I loved her because I loved her. Her alignment or however you would say was not what my heart chose. I chose the woman who understood me. Who sat by me. Who liked going out dancing as much as she appreciated a good movie night on the couch!”
The last of your muscle strength was spent on dropping as silently to the floor as you could.
“I wonder if it was… my fault we drifted apart and… that may be…? Oh, but these things happen... I did not condone her activities. I still don’t, but I’d be lying if I didn’t think I liked that she’s still feisty!”
Donnie gave what was almost a laugh.
It also sounded congested.
You slithered on your belly with only the intention of getting to the bathroom and not interrupting.
“Donatello. None of us chose the life we are born into. I’d say we get to choose after and to a point I did, but a certain destiny caught up with me. Right… Wrong… Who’s to say? I made the decisions I did.”
You were close to the edge of the counter.
“What I can tell you is that when the time comes, for whatever that may be, you get the choice in how you react. When I had my hand in stopping the Shredder or the Krang, I wish I could say I thought of humanity. I didn’t. I thought of my boys. I thought of…” Splinter cut himself off and his voice shook. “I did what I did out of love. I continue to do it for the same. If you are worried that is bad, then you are wrong. Love may be the only right choice any of us can make.”
Your head appeared out from the wood and you saw Splinter first.
He had slid down to the middle of the couch at some point and Donnie now took his old spot at the sofa’s arm.
With his back to you, Donnie was slightly hunched, but that wasn’t what you were looking at.
Down on Donnie’s knee, you saw Splinter’s spindly pink hand settled on top of Donnie’s.
Neither party moved and there were tears in the air.
You meant to run.
You meant to fly.
You were going to lock yourself in the bathroom.
You weren’t going to intrude on this scene.
Instead you rose at the same time a blue light flashed.
Your heart hit the floor.
Donnie and Splinter jolted apart and turned in that direction.
“Y/N!” Mikey hissed as quietly as he could behind you.
Your head tilted toward the sound, but you couldn’t peel your gaze away.
Leo slipped out of the portal with his eyes closed and a carton of cream in his hand. “Yello, dinner party people!”
Raph’s arm appeared next, but Leo froze in his way.
Donnie spun and was heading towards you with his head down.
Staring at where your boyfriend had just been on the couch, Leo was looking at the vision of his father with huge fat tears in his eyes.
“Dad…?” Leo whispered a silent spell.
As if your blood pressure hadn’t fallen enough, it broke through the floor.
Leo didn’t know Splinter was going to be here.
Mikey’s earlier action slapped you in the face.
“What-” Leo’s voice darkened and he moved toward you.
Donnie passed you and Mikey squeaked where he was clearly still in the window based on the way he struggled.
A blue light broke out behind you and you turned to watch Leo’s head appear there, cutting Donnie off. “-did you do!?”
Donnie’s head snapped upright and from this angle all you could see was Leo’s face.
It was broken glass and horrified awe.
Raph whispered something to Splinter.
He was making sure his dad was alright.
“You…” Donnie spoke against the will of his body.
Leo was stuck by only his own accord while Mikey was very literally wedged in the window.
Donnie’s got his sights on the youngest.
“Why was Leonardo not informed?” Ice crystals could have formed on Donnie’s words and you would have believed they were real.
“Th-th-that’s-! U-um!!” Mikey’s hands splat against the wall where he tugged as hard as he could before he popped out of the jamb.
He hit the ground in a flop and shot to his feet, curling around Leo’s portal.
“Th-this looks bad, but I-I told you! There was no way Leo or Raph would have agreed! I couldn’t tell them!” Mikey stopped just shy of passing his disembodied brother.
No one moved.
“They would have stopped me! Or dad!” Mikey pleaded, tears welling up in his eyes. “You know that!”
Donnie inhaled a single time.
“I agreed!”
The scene had not defrosted, but you felt everyone’s attention shift to where Splinter had yelled out.
“When Michelangelo told me you wanted to talk, he shared his concerns about the others!” Splinter’s harsh voice didn’t have a single edge. “I agreed it would be best for me to slip in! They know I am stubborn! As long as I got here, they would not make me leave!”
Smoothly, his words slid and coiled around the group.
“Do they…” Donnie lifted his head and you knew he’d placed his villain persona on. “… control you?”
Splinter made an audible jarred sound.
“Elderly rat at the whims of his more powerful sons?” Donnie was careful in rotating so he stayed out of your view and hit a button to turn off the oven.
“Donatello…” Splinter begged.
“All you do is lie.” Donnie’s malice broke and it dripped to the floor with several hard plops. “Always! All of you!” In a spin, you finally glimpsed your mate and the tears that flung from the velocity of his rage. “You never stop! You compulsive animals!!! HOW?! HOW CAN ANYONE BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU SAY!? WHEN YOU TAKE NOTHING SERIOUSLY?! WHEN YOU NEVER HAVE!? HOW CAN ANY OF THIS BE REAL!? WAS ANY OF THIS-!?!”
“It was!” Splinter stepped up onto the arm of the couch with tears matting his fur. “Donatello, please! You have to understand! I take this matter more seriously than any other!”
“Oh.” The cadence of Donnie’s words bled. “This then? You take this seriously? Now? NOW?!” He bellowed and even you flinched. “OBVIOUSLY NOW IN YOUR OLD AGE! LATER! OF COURSE! I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN! YOU ALWAYS HAD IT IN YOU! YOU JUST HAD TO HAVE ME GROVEL! NOT BEFORE THOUGH! THIS IS THE MATTER OF THE UTMOST IMPORTANCE! NOT WHEN A CHILD GOES MISSING! NOT WHEN A LAB EXPLODES AND YOU SAW, YOU SAW, ONE OF FOUR NOT END UP IN YOUR CLUTCHES?! NOT THEN!? NOT TO EVEN LOOK ONCE!!! NOT WHEN A LITTLE BOY WAS LEFT AND TORTURED FOR YEARS!!!”
Donnie choked.
Splinter welled up.
You looked to the others.
Mikey had brought his hands up to cover his mouth and his tears flowed from grossly large eyes.
Leo still hung, half in, half out, of his portal across the apartment and his face was painted with the bitter weight of the knowledge.
Raph’s lips drew a warped line and his features winced, but he refused to look away.
None of them knew.
Like Leo hadn’t known about the library.
Only you knew Donnie’s past.
“Now…” Donnie threw up his tear stained cheeks and checked around the air. “NOT, NOW HUH!? NOT IN THE ONLY APPLICABLE MOMENT?! NOT A SINGLE GUN!? NOT EVEN A BULLET! WHAT A HANDY FUCKING SCAPEGOAT THAT ALLUDES ME!!! YET ANOTHER BLIGHT BROUGHT UPON BY THE HAMATO NAME!! WHY!? WHY NOW!? WHY DOES MY ACCURSED NINPO NOT MANIFEST NOW!?!”
“It’s because you’re not angry.”
Donnie turned to you with outright betrayal on his features.
You rose with the blow of it and felt your face crumple. “You’re not mad… You’re… You’re sad…”
You watched, up close, how every emotion fell off Donnie’s face.
Left only with featureless surprise, his pupils shook with the empty off-whites in his eye before he turned.
He was going to run.
He needed to leave.
You would field the others.
You only needed to stop four mutant men.
Simple enough on a broken body.
They were already looking at you.
You would give Donnie an opening.
“THAT’S ENOUGH!!!” Raph’s voice cut through at a volume that caused the wall fixtures to shake.
It created a new spell, this one stopping time instead of freezing it.
“NO-!”Raph reached into the portal near him and yanked Leo out of the kitchen and to his side where he threw an enraged finger over top to keep his younger brother in place.
Leo’s eyes took up his entire face and his head shrank down into the top of his plastron in translation that whatever Raph was doing was new.
“MORE-!”Raph stormed into the kitchen where he skirted Donnie long enough to pick up Mikey.
The youngest was thrown clear across the apartment, toward the door, where he barely activated his flight, and staved off colliding with the surface with a burst of orange sparks.
Raph then looked out at his family across the apartment and pointedly put his shell to you and Donnie. “-LIES!!!”
Again, the apartment shook.
He stood there, a shock of muscles quivering with rage before he turned with watery eyes. “You’re right!” Raph told Donnie. “You’ve been right!”
One of Donnie’s hands started to lift.
“All this time!” Raph’s features fragmented and he had to scrub them back into place like a sliding puzzle. “Not how you did it! You fucked that up so bad, but about us! Of course you wouldn’t trust us! How could anyone trust us!?”
Donnie had clear reservations, but didn’t speak.
“We’ve said a thousand times before that we’ll change, we’ll tell the truth, that we’re finally going to quit lying, and not once has it been different! We’re not going to be different until we stop acting like it is! What happened!? Happened! What’s done!? Is done and I’m sick and tiredof pretending it’s anything else!” Raph shook with what was almost a laugh. “I’m out, Lee. As of right now? I quit.” Coming up, he looked the most serene you’d ever seen him. “I quit the team. Hell! As it is? I quit the family.”
You heard Leo scramble.
Raph looked right at Donnie. “I’m going to the roof and I’m going to explain our ninpo. I’m going to tell the damn smoggy sky for all I care. You come or you don’t. Raph is currently a solo act.”
Raph then walked straight over to the window and stared at it for only a second before he grabbed the casing.
Your body pulsed with fear, but Raph barely flexed and pulled the entire frame straight out of the wall and brick outside. “I’ll fix this later.”
Setting the window frame down with far too much care for the destruction he just wrought to your wall, Raph walked out onto the creaking fire escape and climbed up out of view.
Donnie only surveyed some rubble that had landed by his foot before he moved to follow.
You stared as your partner stepped onto the metal.
He paused for a moment, never looked back, and continued after the oldest.
You felt a brush and looked down to find Splinter at your feet.
The old man gave you a single even nod before he too followed out the hole.
Leo made a noise.
As soon as Splinter stepped outside a blaring red wall appeared to block the path.
You heard a knob click.
You spun just in time to see Mikey in your front doorway where he had a similarly empty expression.
Your lips parted to ask.
Mikey drew a tight line with his. “No more lies.”
You wanted to yell that you weren’t.
Of the entire lot of them, you’d lived the most honest.
That wasn’t quite true.
You only had excuses.
Guilt wringing you out, Mikey left and the door closed behind it.
That left you and Leo.
With Mikey manning the front door and Raph blocking what was once a window, you were now trapped with the only turtle who despised you.
You stood in the lingering heat of the oven.
Despite melting down, Donnie still took the time to save the food you and Mikey had worked so hard to prepare.
You loved your mate so much.
Had you hurt him?
Why had you told him that about his ninpo?
Should you have stood up for him more?
You held your hands close to the oven handle.
It seemed then, and still did, that you had said what you needed to.
You needed to be alone with him to deal with everything that had happened.
You’d already agreed to do exactly that.
It would help if you had a few of those categories sorted.
Donnie always did prefer you to have done your homework.
He’d done his both with Splinter and then would come with spades having had a conference with Raph.
That left you now needing to deal with your shit.
So you said what you needed to. “Guess we could start with the easiest stuff.”
Leo grunted lightly in what you imagined was him getting to his feet.
“How you’ve said you wanted me dead twice now.” You threaded your fingers through the oven handle, but only held it.
“Wrong.” You heard Leo try the front door.
Either Mikey or S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. was keeping it closed.
You imagined the automaton was somewhere with popcorn.
“At the gala, one. You wouldn’t remember my name.” You squeezed metal. “And the last time we really spoke. You said I hoped I would be your final straw.”
“I didn’t say hope.”
“But you did say you wanted me dead.”
“This is purgatory.” Leo decided and a thunk sounded that you knew to be his head against the door.
“Welcome to hell.” You gave a sort of smile. “We’re doing this.”
“Raph can’t quit.” Leo spoke distant.
You crossed the apartment.
“We all agreed. No one was coerced. He’s not going to talk about our ninpo. We agreed.”
“It’s over, Leo.”
“I’m their leader.”
You stared.
There was no way to reach him.
He was going to encase himself in as many lies as he needed to protect his fragile heart.
You knew that all too well.
You had your own man doing the same.
You were careful in signaling you were going to touch him before you did.
Leo only gave you a sharp glance, but didn’t move. “Dad’s there. He’ll stop him. Dad knows the threat.”
You took Leo’s wrist and led him to turn.
He came with his head down, locked in on his delusion, and turned toward you in a show that he would not be moved.
“Mikey took a different route. He’s got me. Mikey is always my best back-up. He makes openings with his ninpo. He takes the heat. He’s fire incarnate.”
You released Leo and sized him up.
“Then I slip in. You never got to see us work coordinated. Raph’s too obvious as a bruiser. Mikey’s the real tank. I’m the speed and precision and Raph finishes them off.” His foggy gaze gave way to how happy the memories were.
Your body ached and you used the pain to watch him clearly.
“We head home to dad.” Leo was exactly where he described. “He wouldn’t ask what we did. We wouldn’t ask what he did. We existed in the moment. That’s how it was. ‘Orange, whip something up.’ ‘You got it, daddy-o!’ ‘What’s on the menu tonight?’ ‘Well, we’ve got quite the array of the latest day old delights! Locally sourced from the finest dumpsters.’ ‘I’ll take the chef’s special.’ ‘Coming right up!’ ‘Think we’ll be able to pronounce it this time?’ ‘Not a chance, Rapharoni. Not a chance…’”
You hugged straight into Leo’s center.
He made an audible, “Oof.”
Getting as much of his carapace in your hands as you could, you squeezed him with all your might.
Leo’s arms hung limp over yours.
“’It’s knock-knees.’ ‘What the!? Gnocchi! What’s wrong with you?’ ‘You say it like no-key!’ ‘Of course there’s no key! We live in a subway! Where would we keep a door?’ ‘Leo!’ ‘That’s worse than your bit yesterday with the pho.’ ‘I thought you’d pho-geddaboudit!’ ‘Not again!’ ‘Why do you always do that!?’”
Fat tears knocked on your head one at a time.
You hugged him tighter and his sentences devolved until he was humming the tune of the past.
What had you really learned about this man?
You had no idea.
Leo never said what he meant.
Where Donnie was precise, Leo was ambiguous.
Both calculated, Leo played mental chess thinking of his finishing move while Donnie remapped the board at each step.
While each had their advantages, it was Leo’s methodology that you couldn’t follow.
Retroactive action had once threatened your relationship with Donnie.
It destroyed your knowledge of Leo before you could even place what it was.
He was too sharp.
He knew exactly how to push other’s buttons.
He was a master manipulator.
He’d done exactly what he wanted and kept you at bay.
Not without taking critical damage himself, it just so happened that you had a knack for such a thing.
You’d only inflicted him with wounds because you hadn’t planned at all.
You had time now.
It was with yours, you found Leo, small and trapped in what had to be his teen years.
He clung to memories before the world came crashing down around them.
His family.
He never saw them differently.
That was why he spoke the way he did.
It shaped how he acted.
He created a mold then and there and pressed the rest of him through melted wax.
Only the die was imperfect.
He decided his final move as a child and never looked back.
His family was his entire worth and everything he did was for them.
Only he was so focused on preserving the them of that moment, that he hadn’t seen the field of play had changed.
They no longer needed him in the way he’d decided.
No matter how many times they tried to tell him, he kept stubbornly forcing himself through that old mold.
Each time he extruded a blue shape that was more and more malformed.
It showed every edge where the plates hadn’t been properly set.
Trying relentlessly to make it work, Leo had spent decades refusing to rework the machine.
He only needed to try again.
The wax was wrong.
He was wrong.
He could fix it.
He just needed to try.
He’d sat stubborn.
Long past when the materials ran out and he had begun to crush his skin between boiling metal.
Through each throttle and scar, he continued until he no longer knew when to stop.
When his family acted out of the distorted image he drew, it was an attack of his very being.
He was betrayed again and again and forced more of himself into the mold.
If only he could get it right.
It would be an injustice for you of all people to stop him.
Not you.
Not when he’d worked so hard.
He’d worked himself past flesh and to bone.
Then from the dust, he continued to toil.
He’d been right.
You both were.
You were happenstance over a sandwich.
You’d told him about choice, but his answer sheet was worn down.
How could he make any other, when he wasn’t on your plane?
He was a trapped time traveler and his portals only cut space.
He was also wrong.
Raph’s fed up speech ghosted your ears.
Things happened.
It was done.
You felt the shift.
By speaking those few words into existence and disrupting the flow, Raph had upset the status quo in the same way you had.
Then Splinter followed.
Before Mikey made his own path.
Which left two, one wholly present and the other here in body alone.
You anchored that side of him, having hugged him so long your arms screamed with a force very unlike all the stressors from your crutches.
Leo was sobbing, but he didn’t hold you.
He simply rained his sorrows down.
What could you do?
You couldn’t tell him.
He’d heard a thousand words.
They’d had family meeting after meeting.
They’d spent a lifetime and were still in the same rut.
What about Raph’s simple action had been so different?
What about yours scared Leo so deeply, to his core?
If it was what you said, then you should have reached him.
He’d said you’d dug it out of him.
Eyes damp against his shirt, you saw a mental flurry of Leo’s baring their souls.
It wasn’t you.
It had never been you.
It had been time.
Just like Donnie.
It was time.
“You did good.”
Leo babbled a few more syllables, before he stiffened in your hold.
“You did so good.” Tears threatened your vision so you closed your eyes and put all your strength into the hug. “You were right!”
“That-” You felt his hands ghost up to push you away.
“You were!” You forced your body flush with his and sent a watery grave into his eyes. “You were right to love! You were right to fight! You were right to worry! You were right to try! You were right to do everything you could to protect your family! Leo, you did an amazing job!”
A revelation did not pass over Leo’s features.
He stared down at you, spellbound.
He saw you.
The current you.
He saw now.
“They lived!” You told the parts of him, one foreign and aged mingling with the other who hadn’t properly looked in a mirror in years. “You did it. You got them all here! You protected them!”
“I…?” He believed you.
Your cheeks threatened to swallow your eyes. “Every one of them.”
“But they…”
“But nothing!” You stepped closer into him and he had to widen his stance to stay upright. “You can keep punishing yourself, but that doesn’t do them any good! They’re waiting for you! They don’t care what you did! They care what you do now! So, you didn’t save them the way you wanted? Does that really matter? The end result is the same!”
His own philosophy crashed the pieces of him together and he wobbled.
You squeezed until you thought your shoulders might pop out of their sockets. “And that’s where you are. You’re at the end of the road, Leo. You did it. You’re done. Your job is done.”
The first breath he took gave his new form life.
The second felt the years he’d lost.
The third sipped bittersweet in the many lives the old him had touched.
Then came happiness.
In a wave so large, his teeth lined up for a decade’s wide smile.
The time between flowed like a river down his face in droves.
“You can rest.” You buried your face into him, but saved your mouth. “Your loved ones are here and they’re waiting. They’ve been waiting all this time. They want to thank you. You did everything you could.”
Leo hugged you.
In one giant sweep, all that you had squeezed into him was returned until you were nearly bowled over.
You genuinely had no idea how either of you were still upright.
“He’s in good hands.” You added as soon as you got your oxygen back.
It was crushed right back out of you and together you both cried.
The downpour washed the slate clean.
You weren’t sure if you would etch it anew, but for now you were going to store it.
There was time.
So much so, especially for Leo, that you languished in it. It brought you both stumbling to the couch where neither of you could let go. It was only after being seated side by side did you feel sturdy, but Leo didn’t let go with an arm slung around your shoulders. He grew into a frustrating weight, but there was a certain comedy to it that had you both barbing each other with little spikes for a sense of normalcy. You weren’t sure if that would be your relationship moving forward, but for now it felt like you could traverse it on your own terms.
When Raph came down the fire escape in a series of clangs, Leo only arched out where he still had a hold on you and greeted his brother with a wry smile.
If Leo’s newly current presence was obvious to you, it was plain as day for Raph, who was moving forward. “Leo!”
“Hey, bro. Miss me? Bring that big beautiful mug over here for me to see!” Leo extracted his arm from you and whispered a parting sorrow in your ear. “Sorry, doll.”
For a moment you were on a rooftop until you were back in your apartment looking at Leo.
“What can I say?” He was all smarmy charm. “A fling’s a fling! No hard feelings?”
You had a thousand insults on your tongue, but Donnie’s arms wrapped around your middle and he extracted you with a bitter glower.
Leo didn’t pay him any mind and caught Raph by the cheeks to squeeze them. “Prickly, you forget to shave?”
“What can I say? It’s past five o’clock.” Raph fluttered his lashes.
“Big news: I’m thinking about quitting too.” Leo gave Raph’s face one last squish before he let go.
“Oh?” Raph craned his brow ridge through his mask.
“Yeah, thinking about starting a new team. I’m still workshopping a name. I’m thinking Mayhem’s Mutants. We get ourselves a cute mascot. Everybody loves a cute mascot.” Leo tipped his head, amused.
“He is cute.” Raph caught the joking bug. “Good luck with that, I’ll have to see. I sent out a ton of resumes and have already gotten a few calls back.”
“That right? Well, make sure to suit up for the interviews and when they hit you with that bit at the end asking if you have any questions, you always, always, ask ‘em about parking. They eat that shit up.” Leo threw out his hand in a smoothing sailing motion.
“Thanks. I think I will.” Raph chuckled.
“Also, like remember though, I’m just saying, my thing has dental…! So… you know… keep your options open, alright?” Leo clucked.
Donnie cuddled you close where he’d pulled you clean over the back of the couch.
You leaned back and bumped your head against the underside of his chin.
He rested there.
Little nail clicks were Splinter and you opened your eyes to see him crawl up onto the couch to approach his middle son.
A small fear caught you and you grabbed Donnie to share the load.
He held you tightly.
It hadn’t occurred to you that Leo’s change could be an impermeant one, but faced with this father, a certain manifestation of how he came to be could upset the balance.
You wanted to interfere, but it was out of your hands.
Splinter touched Leo’s arm before moving to cup his son’s cheek.
He then pinched hard and pulled.
“Ow, ow, ow!” Leo squawked.
“Do you know how long we’ve been waiting!?” Splinter complained.
It was the perfect response.
Leo immediately welled up with tears.
“Come on, pops! C-can’t have been that long…” Leo spoke weepy.
“Foolish boy!” Splinter scolded, but his sharp edge was disintegrating by the second.
Raph smiled and you watched his eyes flash red.
Leo’s joined for a flicker of blue and you felt Donnie jolt around you.
Looking up you found him with a shine of purple in his iris and then the front door exploded open.
“Leo!!!” Mikey shrieked and flew straight to tackle Leo off the couch and into Raph.
“Alright, alright! There’s enough of me to go around! Stop acting like I’ll disappear into another dimension or something!” Leo complained.
A beat of silence passed.
“Not funny, Leo!” Raph growled and pulled all the Hamato into a hug.
“What is wrong with you!?” Mikey hissed.
“You dare joke-!” Splinter threw out frustrated balled fists.
Leo laughed brightly and you felt a very specific fracture in the family mend.
You leaned further into Donnie.
He moved to envelope you, but a growl rumbled out from his stomach.
There was a pause that could only be broken by Mikey, “Dinner bell!”
Everything then went into motion. The meal was salvaged in various stages and you found that the cream you had seen Leo with was because Raph wanted to make his own dessert. He apparently had a cobbler recipe he was proud of and wanted to show off to you specifically. Splinter was able to present his green bean casserole which was admittedly delicious and supposedly his tout to where Mikey got his culinary skills. There was talk of jobs and this and that. In moving groups, you got to mostly rest as the men scarfed down comical plate loads and got into arguments over the silliest things.
It eventually broke off where Raph took full advantage of the kitchen and its central food hub as he always baked. Making quick work of repurposing a casserole dish, he eventually had time to take some measurements of a wall and Donnie dismissed him only to point outside. Raph poked his head out to find supplies on the fire escape and a calling card post-it with a caricature of S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. on it that made Leo shudder. Clean up happened with Leo taking heavy point of washing many dishes and Mikey humming alongside him as a mystic dryer with orange tinted air. Raph stacked things up to eventually take with them and Donnie shot off a message to S.H.E.L.L.D.O.N. from his computer about what was left for the window repair.
It eventually brought a curious Raph over to the computer as he wasn’t going to let his promise go of being the one to fix it. The eldest tacked on a resume of the work he’d done around the lair where he’d expanded arch ways to better fit his size and architecture slid into Donnie’s special interest category. Both men were soon scouring blueprints and you feared it wouldn’t just be a window put back in place in your kitchen.
Nothing you could really do to stop them, you drifted to the side, where the other pair of turtles were entertained and found Splinter alone with a cup of tea on your couch. He gestured you over and made you one where you only faintly wondered where he’d gotten his supplies. You drank an incredible cup of smooth liquid that had you sending awe at the old man who took your praise in stride. A timer went off and Leo got a little too excited. His hand went up where it had been hand mixing a bowl of cream. The fling brought ire then a laugh from Mikey who seemed relentless in hanging off the blue brother.
All of it brought smiles to Leo’s face where piping hot cobbler was passed out with fresh dollops of cream running off.
Donnie was busy fixing a schematic and didn’t step away to grab a portion.
You’d been resting for long enough and got him one sans cream as you knew the melting whip would only sog the cobbler’s crispy top, a complaint you’d known well of your partner. Bringing the plate and a fork over, you set it down beside him to take at his leisure and he passed you a distracted glance along with an affectionate mating call for your effort.
It brought a plate clanging silence to the room.
Donnie immediately bristled.
Raph was the first to break out his excitement. “Life partners?!”
Fury was abated for repulsion on Donnie’s face. “Is that your descriptor?!”
“Uh, duh.” Leo rolled his eyes. “Kinda bigger deal than boring old English to have a special way of saying ‘I love you.’ What do you call it?”
Donnie turned and tried to bury his beak into his computer.
“Nope! Not letting that go!” Leo jumped the counter with Raph excitedly gushing about romance right behind him.
It caused Donnie to up and run from the pair where they circled the apartment making kissy faces as your boyfriend got more and more flustered.
Mikey appeared by your side with a forkful of cobbler. “I’m not into the whole thing.”
You nodded for the sake of it, watching the display and witnessing Splinter doing the same with an overflowing affection.
“Cretins!” Donnie reared a hand on a turn and with it came a wall of purple that Raph and Leo both slammed into.
Leo blinked a few rapid times before he peeled his face off the projection.
“Woah…” Raph ran his hands over the clear purple swath. “When’d you learn to make less lethal stuff?”
“Was he mad mad?” Mikey asked you. “Like ninpo making mad?”
You shook your head as you honestly didn’t believe so.
That made this Donnie’s first projection seemingly created his will alone.
This was confirmed for you as Donnie came forward to study the barrier with a finger curled to his lips.
“Amazing.” Leo was unenthused. “It’s literally a rectangle. Whoop-dee-doo. Wanna actually impress me, egghead? Make it disappear.”
“Here we go.” Mikey exaggerated an eye roll.
“It’s not magic!” Leo bristled.
“You were one step away from saying abracadabra.” Raph snarked.
Leo mimed the magic word mockingly to the oldest.
Donnie had his brow wrinkled during the exchange in clear effort.
Something then occurred to him and he leaned away with a slow exhale as if giving up.
The wall crumbled with pixels collapsing like a perfectly cleared Tetris screen.
Leo arched his mask. “Huh. Well alright.”
“Let’s try for a pistol.” Donnie flared with a tame malevolence for him.
“I’m blameless! You shoot your sensei!” Leo pointed at Raph as he exited and headed over to Splinter. “Got a cup for me?”
“I’d need to boil more wa-” Splinter yawned.
Mikey’s expression grew gooey. “About time.”
“I can stay up!” Splinter complained.
“He’ll be passed out in ten.” Raph told you.
You giggled.
“I will not! This is a special occasion!” Splinter brushed his eldest off with a wave of his hand.
Leo put the kettle on and Splinter fell asleep before it even hissed.
Burners clicked off, there was a quiet movement of gathering things and dividing leftovers. It struck you that Donnie hadn’t consumed anything, but you had a feeling he might later. All based on chance and how things held up, you did your best in choosing to take dishes he might like and a portal was soon formed to transport the rest. Straight into the lair kitchen, things were filed out with the final retrieval being Raph carrying a snoring Splinter through to put him to bed. The eldest then returned once the apartment was emptied and the three Hamato children stood in front of the portal for their goodbyes.
A less than poignant affair, you mostly got a group hug where they wished you well and there were promises of check-in texts. All in order, Donnie stood politely aside and watched on for a slight nod as his great thank you. It was accepted with a few jeers that he barked at and with that the men exited one at a time and Leo’s portal blinked away for the foreseeable future.
Donnie swept you off your feet within seconds. “What happened?”
“Which part?” You tittered as he was pressed behind you and carried you like a hostage to the bathroom.
“You were close! You smell like orange and blue all over.”
“Mikey pulled me out the window and I finally got through to Leo, for real this time.”
“You will shower and explain.” He decided gruffly and it was so endearingly him that you didn’t mind as you stripped.
He sat off to the side, peeking through the curtain as you did a quick wash of your body while regaling him with all that had occurred that night. For Mikey, Donnie cared little, but he ran a gambit of fury at the audacity of the middle Hamato for slighting you. He was still mad, but quieted as you exited the shower damp and nude. It distracted him and he only held a huff as he did his washing up at the sink where you eventually brushed your teeth. Whisked to bed in a none too romantic sense, Donnie instead ate up physical affection in a very literal sense. Mouthing over whatever skin wasn’t coated in pajamas, he obviously scented you before cuddling close where you finally asked him about how he watched your physical therapy.
He began by impressing upon you how proud he was to have you as his mate. He explained that even when he struggled to watch or help, you fought mercilessly and he couldn’t have been more enamored. He even went so far back to remark on your handling of the kidnapping, a lost time that he still applauded you for because however long it was, you’d survived. You’d eventually kissed into him, sweetly at first, in a way that reminded you of tasting a rare bottle of wine. The complexity came with airing and outpoured details.
You found out Donnie had in fact been doing mental constructions during his meditation. While Leo had stopped him from implementing new security cameras, Sinai Hospital had their own footage which Donnie had pilfered and gone through. When he played the tape back and examined it, he’d found that his ninpo didn’t just appear out of thin air, it was constructed there, piece by piece just as he had learned as a child. Hearing Mikey say meditation came with a variety techniques helped him pair the ideas and he found the schematic process to be a soothing one regardless of the lethal creation it was trying to curb. He was pleased with the progress and, as you had seen, had recently start to tap into his ninpo as a pool of energy.
Until tonight he hadn’t been able to conjure anything, but in his increased meditation, he no longer found the raging purple flame inside him. It was now an organ like any other, only it extended far beyond his body’s reach. He could now imagine himself approaching the well as if it were a materials cache. He imagined with practice not only could he manifest anything he could imagine, but there were probably other uses for the purple ooze beyond that.
You added what you knew about the other turtle’s power and Donnie revealed to you the conversation had on the roof. Just as Raph had said, he only explained the history and knowledge of the ninpo and nothing more. It was apparently a combined manifestation of the Hamato clan’s essence. A generational pool of power passed down, it was an exclusive art that was thought to only be tapped by wholly connecting and trusting one’s family. It manifested uniquely to each user, but seemed as unlimited and wild as all mystic arts. There was no discussion after the presensation and the trio on the roof had spent a time in silence, allowing the knowledge to permeate.
You tucked in close to Donnie at the thought of him wholly connecting to save you, his family, and he confirmed that, in that moment, he forgot all else, but a drive to save you. Overridden yourself, you felt compelled to open up about your healing humiliations. From stink to lashing out, Donnie took his time dismantling your concerns while also rubbing those exhausted muscles of yours.
Exhaustion and eventual mutual caressing coaxed loose lips where revealed he’d asked Splinter over because he needed a firsthand account of how love worked between a supposed hero and villain. Now that the forewarned grave harm had finally come to you, Donnie found it difficult to imagine you could have any sort of safe life together so he had to turn to the only pair he knew that had chanced and survived such a feat, successful or not. You admitted what you’d overhead and Donnie didn’t fault you. He only plied affections on how you’d snuck in without his knowledge.
Beofre he diverted back to you, there was something about the way Donnie spoke of his conversation with Splinter.
He had a finality to him.
Not as an ends, but a means to, something about his tone made you think this was the final barrier that had kept him from actually proposing.
You had to ask if that was the case as your lids grew heavy.
It was drawing close to dawn.
You’d spent hours catching up.
“Yes..” He breathed warmth at your intuitiveness. “I had reservations. Unrelated to the grotesque concept of asking a father’s permission, however.”
You were both gazing at each other from your pillows. “That last bit hadn’t crossed my mind. I swear.”
“He… did help...” He admitted. “He apparently proposed to Big Mama.”
You startled as much as your tired body could.
“Her response was to reveal her plans and imprison him to fight as a slave in her arena.”
“Oh…”
“He… still has the ring.”
You reached for Donnie.
He met you with careful fingers.
You wondered if Splinter had been any sort of stuck like Leo. There was the many names the old man had and he’d been open about his regrets. A frustrating like father, like son, you supposed it made sense and felt optimistic for the Hamato going forward.
Their familial bonds were apparently transcendent.
“His didn’t work out, but you think ours will?” You murmured.
“He was happenstance, to be clear. An example, if anything.”
You made a curious trill.
Donnie wormed closer. “Sleep, my love.”
“What was it, Don… exactly?”
Donnie’s beak lightly brushed the tip of your nose. “I was reassured that I am unlike them. Their cycle does not apply to me. I am something new. I am me and am immune to their failure.”
You brushed his cheek with a sloppy swipe. “Only one of you.”
“And you.” He pressed closer to seal the comment, before giving you space to sleep.
