As someone who was introduced to RWBY through the game, I really want Grimm Eclipse to have some kind of reference or tie-in to the series canon.

There are a lot of ways RT could do this, but I would absolutely love for it to be brought up as a way for the main cast to flex... because the storyline is INSANE.

Ruby: Oh yeah, we went on tons of training missions at Beacon. There was this one time we were investigating damage to the security network in the Emerald Forest.

Anyone who does not understand the amount of bullshit these children went through in this game: Oh, so you guys did a lot of perimeter defense missions?

Ruby: Well, the first two were basically just perimeter defense, but then things kinda went sideways... we found out someone was sabotaging that security networks using Merlot Industries tech so we investigated their building in Mountain Glenn. You know, the unstable urban wasteland that’s crawling with Grimm? Anywho, the building exploded and almost collapsed on us when we got there, so we investigated the underground ruins. There were a whole bunch of genetically modified Grimm down there. They explode when you kill them, which was freaky. But we made it past them! Except then while we were trying to escape we found someone had rigged the entire place with a massive bomb to kill any intruders. But we were fine! We powered the cart it was attached to with Dust from the destroyed-settlement-turned-mass-grave and managed to throw it into a river without triggering the bomb. The explosion was huge though! But the bomb opened up an exit, so all’s well that ends well.

Other person, now extremely worried: Yeah... of course... you stopped taking those missions after that, right?

Ruby: We would have, but at that point we really wanted to know what was going on, so we kept trying. We took another mission in Forever Fall, and it went really well! We killed a whole bunch of Grimm and even a mutated Beowolf! There was actually a Merlot Industries ship there, it was really strange. And then we found this super creepy warehouse full of Grimm with a bunch more mutants and we got trapped in there and had to fight our way out. Then we went to investigate the ship that the Grimm were getting loaded onto and got trapped in a storage container. I’m still not totally sure where it went, but we got out in the end. We were stranded on this desert island full of some toxic chemical... and there were all of these killer robots, but they were like, WAY more powerful than most security droids. The island actually had a bunch of communication towers, but they all had their signals jammed. 

Other person who is now absolutely horrified: PLEASE tell me you fixed it, called for help, and then went back to school.

Ruby: Well... we DID fix it, but instead of our Professor from Beacon we ended up talking to the mad scientist who founded Merlot Industries! He faked his death after causing Mountain Glenn’s destruction! Professor Ozpin explained it all, and he guided us around the Island. We shut down all these vents from a pipeline that were leaking toxic gas and got around the chemical drilling operations. Then we went INSIDE Dr Merlot’s laboratory so we could find out where we were and send our coordinates to Beacon. 

Other person, who is now on the verge of a heart attack: AND DID THAT HAPPEN? WERE YOU OKAY?

Ruby: Technically, yes, but it took us a LONG time to find an access terminal. Merlot had all these killer robots in his lab and a BUNCH of Grimm, normal and genetically modified. He used this weird serum to make the mutant Grimm, so we destroyed it all. He was pretty calm about it at first, but we destroyed a LOT of stuff and then when we finally managed to call for help he got sorta angry? We went around his lab wrecking stuff for a while longer, but then we wound up in some area he called the “testing grounds.” We cut down the early stuff really easily, but then he sent in a MUTATED DEATHSTALKER. It took forever to kill and we all nearly died at least twice each. But hey, we won... eventually. Then Merlot blew up the whole island, so we ran for the airship and got the hell out of there. It was a weird couple of days but we got a ton of extra credit for it and oh yeah what was the question again?

Person who is just beginning to understand the amount of bullshit these children went through: I honestly have no idea.

In a Remnant where a piece of ancient power decided to make itself home there were some Grimm have come into contact and have become monstrous mutants.

‘   well, i wouldn’t have to take care of you so often if you weren’t so reckless.   ’   faux irritation smothered over the pained tone of ren’s voice, underlying pant and wheeze lining snarky remark. there was a gash up their leg, and they weren’t quite sure yet if it tore through a tendon. their semblance, their mental morphine, meant specifically to numb the pain was in effect and for all intents and purposes, most likely making the situation worse. ren couldn’t tell what putting weight on the would would do, but they was sure it wasn’t good. this was awful, they would be detrimental to the success of the mission in this state. the targeted mutant beowolf was already out of sight. ren grit their teeth and tried to focus more of their aura on the wound, pulling from a well that was already running dry.   ‘   i can defend myself until the backup arrives, you need to make sure the beowolf doesn’t reach it’s target.   ’   the dragon reached up from where crouched to grip cobalt’s wrist, expression stern.   ‘   cobalt, i’ll be fine.   ’

What's your thoughts about Merlot and what he adds to the RWBY franchise? Mainly what are your thoughts on his motives revealed in Lusus Naturae, his ability to make grimm stronger than their elders, and his connection to the fall of Mountain Glenn?

i think he’s an interesting villain - he helps flesh out the backstory of Mountain Glenn, which is nice in establishing world-building, y’know, he’s ultimately the reason the city failed because he kept drawing Grimm in for his experiments

and that’s also a villain-type we’ve not seen in this show so far, one who is willing to go to extreme lengths to satisfy their own obsessive curiosity (and like, understanding what the Grimm are and where they came from isn’t a bad thing but obviously Merlot’s gone too far) - so he’s different on top of that. and we know he had some kind of working relationship with Ozpin before that Grimm obsession led to them falling out

Merlot Industries was a research and development corporation that (initially) led research in genetics and artificial intelligence (which explains all the androids he uses as enforcers). so Merlot’s fixation on the Grimm was probably initially a personal curiosity before he started dedicating company resources to it - as Grimm don’t have genetics as they’re not actually living creatures and they’re pointedly mindless (at least initially), and that’s where things started going wrong. eventually driving the population of Mountain Glenn underground to then die in the world’s largest tomb. it’s possible that Mountain Glenn would’ve fallen with or without Merlot, but his actions likely exacerbated things

interestingly, the other professors at Beacon had as equally low an opinion of him as Ozpin does - though what we hear from Port and Oobleck doesn’t sound like they’re personally familiar with him - which might suggest Merlot was in attendance at Beacon in his younger years, so that’s a possibility to keep in mind

Lusus Naturae does give some interesting insight to his motivation - some of it reflective of things he says in the game proper - he sees Grimm as a superior lifeform that can be molded and personally believes that he can unlock their true potential and elevate them to that superior state, and that no one truly understands his genius (interestingly the song refers to the Grimm as ‘created in a netherworld’. it’s not clear if that’s literal, but the ooze the Grimm dragon dropped the spawned Grimm back in volume 3 were actually described in commentary more as portals than spawning them, and the location we see Salem operates from definitely fits the description of a ‘netherworld’, even though the moon looks the same - interestingly in the sequence at the beginning of volume 4 where a Beowolf emerges from the ooze, there’s a reflection on the pools of a moon that doesn’t match that of the moon in the shot, not to mention the angle the moon is at means there should have been a reflection of other objects in front of the moon that aren’t there. if that’s intentional, that lends to the idea that Grimm are literally not from Remnant at all)

Merlot’s experiments also yielded some pretty spectacular results - his serum altered the Grimm he managed to contain (a feat in itself, as usually they don’t last in captivity, which makes them hard to study), making them tougher, larger, more resilient and imbuing them with additional abilities (i think they might be a smidge smarter too), as well as altering their appearance away from the original (losing the red markings and red-yellow eyes and internal glow in place of green markings and green-blue eyes and internal glow, as well as the bone plates being accompanied by green crystals sprouting from the body)

that Merlot seems to be able to at least direct his mutant Grimm if not command them is also interesting, as it means he might have somehow managed to come across whatever it is Salem, and to a lesser extent Cinder as shown in how she interacts with the Grimm dragon and controls her arm, can do and completely independently of Salem’s influence

Merlot’s experiments definitely yielded the biggest results in Grimm containment and modification, and as it seems like he did survive, i’m curious to find out if he might get incorporated into the story at a later time, given he could be a potential rogue element and/or someone Salem would be interested in recruiting (after all, jacked up Grimm with additional abilities which don’t require waiting for them to get older, tougher and smarter is an attractive premise - plus Salem would be able to sate his curiosity, which would make recruiting him to her cause quite easy for her). though Merlot Industries are not, notably, the only company that has attempted experimentation on the Grimm. the Arma Gigas that Weiss fought in the White trailer is, according to volume 4′s commentary, possessed by a Geist Grimm, however the manga states (which certainly works in its favour as unlike the Petras Gigas and how Chibi shows the Geist working, the Grimm mask doesn’t appear on the external structure of the thing) that the Grimm possessing the suit of armour - apparently a replica of a suit in the ‘Schnee museum’ and three times stronger than the original (and possibly some kind of mech suit) - was actually an amalgamation of several possession-type Grimm that the SDC had cooked up, and i’m curious to see how the show explores that little R&D project at the SDC

What’s worse than normal grimm? Ones who are on fire.

Everything flammable around Oz is on fire already as these mutant beowolf grimm from his nightmares surround him, snarling. What’s worse is that his powers don’t seem to be working. When he tries to low time or shield himself, green light sparks and then fizzles out instead. All the headmaster has is his cane, and to be fair that’s beaten down a couple of these things already, but everytime he looks it seems like the number of them hasn’t shrunk at all.

The heat is nearly unbearable as Ozpin lunges forward at another one, eventually maneuvering so he throws one into the others. It gives him a small opening to move but a circle of them always reforms around him. Exhaustion starts taking its toll before someone shows up to aid or watch, not that he can tell at first.

RWBY Vol. 4, Ch. 10

Holy crap. I'm currently wallowing in my own tears and emotions that was too much for my heart. •I knew the second that dude showed up he was bad news, mostly because he's with Salem and the others in the intro. But why is he there? Where'd he come from? Why is he sided with them? I have so many questions. I like Ozpin advising Oscar to keep his guard up with him. If you're a tiny person like Oscar and I, it's best to keep your guard up against people who are three times your size. •Jaune, I didn't like how you couldn't take a no from Weiss, but other than that, I've never had an issue with my bro. And that whole speech with my babe Ruby made me love you more and geez she needed that. Thank you, fam. •Finally... some answers on those two. IT'S ABOUT TIME. Little Ren and Nora are too freaking cute and seeing them so sad, so crumbled, and scared tore me into pieces. Now, I'm kind of curious because I was so certain that Ren was his first name seeing as they use first names in team names and he's based off of Fa Mulan where, in that culture, last names come first, but who knows? There's still time. •I think it's so cute how Ren was actually a kind of energetic and talkative whereas now he's a little more laid back and quiet, but he contributes to conversations when he knows his words will have value or he just wants to make a quip. I love that about Ren so much. •I also noticed how his streak was a purple and now it's pink. Or maybe I'm colorblind and I'm recounting it wrong (correct me if I am). If it is pink currently, then Nora had to have had something to do with that (Another 3 million points to Renora). •Ren's parents are bomb.com. End of story. •Those bullies can have a bad time with Sans and get dunked on. Don't mess with my baby Nora. Now, I want to know how her parents died. How did she get onto the streets? Where is the orphanage in this town? Tf?????? I'm not happy that she got bullied, but that actually goes against what I initially thought. I thought Ren would've been the one that was constantly bullied and Nora came in to stand up for him because she doesn't care about other people's negativity. It's was a nice and sad surprise for me. •I'm not sure if I've said this before, but I am absolutely in love with the relationship between these two. It's unfortunate how they actually met, but I feel like they would've been friends with or without the destruction of the village. Like, eventually Ren would've stood up for her and they would've been friends. I was actually banking on him using that lien to buy a pastry for her instead of his father in the shop, but then shit happened... •WE FINALLY HAVE SOME INSIGHT ON WHAT REN'S SEMBLANCE IS. I don't know exactly what it's called. I don't want to say invisibility because I feel like it's more than that but definitely has something to do with it. I really hope we get to see more of it in coming chapters. •The second I heard them play Boop in the background, I lost it. •Holy crap. The weird lair, if I can call it that, of the mutant Grimm (swear it looked like a giraffe, beowolf, nevermore combo. Creepy as hell)... damn, son. I want to say that the Grimm took those weapons as trophies from exploits, but that's probably unlikely because they most likely don't have that concept in their brains. But maybe the Hunters that fought fled and hid out there and, of course, were found and killed. •That growling is where I would've immediately left and found safety. That thing took out a village. Hell no I'm fighting that thing. However, those two are probably gonna man up and try to take them and where have we seen that? (Cough cough Pyrrha). Look, all I'm saying is, if they go into this battle, they better come out alive or I'm rampaging RT. •One more time, I love these two to death. I love their connection. Hold hands for rest of your lives, plis. For real, plis. All in all, a very emotional episode, but I think we needed that. Yeah, it causes for more questions, but it answered some, too. But I want to know what you guys thought about the whole thing and some of your theories and stuff. I'm curious ❤❤❤ (but please excuse me while I continue to cry).
