Okay so quick partial worldbuilding dump because I'm bored. Some things I changed from before, most of it is the same. I'll add stuff later...

World has a lot of magical creatures: fairies, mermaids, etc. Origin is...magical asteroid releasing magical energy. Causing existing creatures to mutate and become magical. I was just fucking around, okay.

[Apparently the asteroid thing is common in sci-fi (source: rando on Discord) but I haven't read or watched much sci-fi stuff so I did not know that.]

World also has humans. Humans don't have an inner source of magic they can use but they can extract magical energy from their surroundings and use that. I like to imagine it as like...threads? Yeah I went basic with the general magic stuff...well except for the threads maybe. Ha...

ANYWAYS. So humans were going around, learning magic and doing spell things (not all of them though, since this isn't something everyone has the talent for, or the time to learn the skill) but then some guy decided to really have fun with it and that resulted in. Chaos. Destruction. And lots of weird candy people that hate their own existence.

After this what happened is...another guy comes in. Apparently he's the chaos guy's friend. They fight. Friend wins. Chaos guy is supposedly killed. By the friend.

The friend is hailed a hero and made the ruler. They're like "Shit, you know what, maybe humans aren't supposed to be using magic." Most people agree with them. He makes laws so you have to have his approval to use magic. You get a permit from learn, then eventually a license and all that. It's hard, so you don't have many people going around having those licenses.

There is a great progression in non-magical technology. Monarch is a hero in the eyes of the people and for some reason also a fashion icon. You can tell why I haven't posted any art of her.

There's fairies by the way. I mentioned them before, but like, there are fairies. They are exempt from the magic laws because they're not humans. And who the fuck goes around messing with fairies, come on??

[I would talk more about the fairies except this post is getting too long. But they kind of just appear? And they're small. And they stick around a long time so they know a lot more about history than humans. Also they're the reason people think dragons are these huge terrifying creatures. When really dragons are just. Smol. Perspective.]
