Previous Substance anon here to say THANK YOU so much for your answer lmao I felt like I was taking crazy pills bc the reviewers arguing they were different people were also complaining the film was too unsubtle -- and I was like, okay but if that was true, the core premise of the film wouldn't be flying over your head?? I really started to throw myself by wondering if maybe I really missed something. Also thank you bc I saw both this and Revenge bc of your reblogs and they were awesome.

the substance was too unsubtle but these are the same people jerking off to megaflopolis..... not serious people! should not be taken seriously! and also one of these films overperformed at the box office and it isn't the one by mr. my wife and daughter and granddaughter are all better filmmakers than me!

i've learned after a long time observing the industry and then spending a whirlwind five years inside of it that when women do anything - write anything, direct anything, produce anything, attach themselves to any project, this is An Inherently Bad/Wrong/Problematic/Messy/Stupid/Evil Thing and people will construct extremely elaborate goalposts in order to put down/write off/not take seriously/condemn/sternly finger wag the project and the woman/women behind it. women in this industry are not allowed to be messy, are not allowed to be ambitious and take big swings, they're not allowed to have any sense of humor at all, much less an edgier one. they're not allowed to be successful, but they're also not allowed to be failures. they're not allowed to play it safe either, and see my earlier statement about big swings. definitely a no no from the little lady! women aren't allowed to make films About Something and definitely aren't allowed to make films that have no meaning! they can't be about Any Group of People, but also if they're not speaking for all women and/or my specific subcommunity of womanhood then HOW DARE THEY. but also - and this is the most important part - if a woman tries to speak to a broad sense of shared class experience that the majority of women but not every single specific individual woman who set foot on this hellhole of a rock we call of earth, she is The Fucking Worst Person On Earth And How Dare She And I AM Going To Complain About It On Letterboxd And Then Immediately Give The Worst Film You Know Written And Directed By A Man Five Stars With No Further Thought.
