It's like we all say or do things we know other people will like on purpose sometimes that's a part of living in society. it's one thing to write for a specific group of people or tell a joke for one friend bc you know they'll think it's funny. But you simply can't apply that to every aspect of your presence. Not even in a work setting! you can trust me on this one, if you succeed at becoming widely likeable and uncontroversial enough to get all the people who were on the fence about you to like the person you're pretending to be that is its own kind of failure

a lot of the marketing research I'm doing for this class that's supposed to be about like "building your own brand" reveals the practice of tailoring your presence on this earth to what other people want to be a vaguely manipulative process that's only successful like half the time but see if I acknowledge that I'm failing to adequately market myself. It's a beautiful system. Disgusting, but so well constructed. and THAT is what I want to study

#these articles are like: but be genuine! customers can tell when you're not #you have to accept that for a portion of the population marketing themselves will feel fake and weird no matter what #'putting your best foot forward is a skill all of us-' 'it's not lying to highlight your strengths in a way that gets people to pay attenti #listen to me #if you're constantly focused on how to present yourself in the best light you'll forget what you actually like about yourself #people *can* tell when you hate yourself #most honest motivational speech i've ever heard was at my sister in law's graduation where this woman a successful lawyer was like #look i've been lucky a lot of times. a lot of that was just luck #work on what's important to you do your best and you'll put yourself in a good position to take opportunities when they come #you can't predict what's going to happen you can just be open to opportunities to go where you want to go #all advice from successful people should be prefaced with that probably. like it's luck. a lot of times it's also hard work too #that's the only bit you can control #doesn't always get you ahead either. idk. it's not like if you say the exact right thing all the time you're destined for greatness #i wish marketing was about communicating clearly what you have to offer to those you think will be interested #but it's just becoming a more and more elaborate like. acting routine you have to keep up in every area of life #calm down. people won't like you that much better if your instagram page is pretty
