-Although she hated to be seeing her in almost the same way as the first time they’d properly met, Pearl knew this was for the best. When she went to the cafe she had *tried* to talk herself out of it, but Joel insisted she would be fine if she talked to Lizzie. So here she was, knocking on her door again.-
-Pearlo
Lizzie was doing.... Something on her computer. Honestly she wasn't even sure what, the city had sent her paperwork to finally get the iron fire escape replaced, but it felt impossible to parse through all the human legalese.
She needed a break. When she heard an unannounced knock on the door she sighed in relief despite the interaction meaning she needed to shift more human again as she walked to open the door.
"Oh, Pearl right? what are you doing here again so soon?" She tried not to sound too accusatory.

I held my ground as I looked at Leona, not wanting to back down but also feeling like I would be doing exactly what he wanted if I sniped back again. It was like I was sitting in the palm of his hand, not able to entirely win in this situation.
And, if anything, he seemed almost more amused, or perhaps pleased, by my stubborn silence. After a brief moment though, he stepped around me and began walking towards the door with purpose.
The door opened with a soft click, and I found myself following him, not sure what he was going to do until he yelled out into the corridor, “JACK!”
It was like a ripple went through the hallway with the name being repeated as a murmur, presumably until the message reached the ‘Jack’ in question.
I frowned in confusion before looking towards the man who still stood blocking the doorway and finding myself voicing my question before I put any real thought into it, “What are you doing?”
Leona looked back over his shoulder at me, his eyebrows lifting slightly before he spoke, “You said you were going to evaluate the clan, I’m calling someone to stick with you.”
I blinked at him in silent surprise as he turned to his attention back to the hallway. leaning against the doorframe in a relaxed manner that also managed to completely block off the opening and hold me inside.
So he was going to have me watched while I was in his clan…. I suppose it made sense in many ways. I was someone who’d already killed a vampire, he might not want me running loose in his clan. But in the same sentence, I wasn’t overly fond of someone following me around as his eyes.
But I supposed it was only fair. In many ways, I was serving as Crowley’s eyes, even if I didn’t like it.
“Ruggie,” At his quieter, far more relaxed call, the shorter man appeared once more, tilting his head with a half-impatient but questioning gaze.
“You keep an eye on the herbivore as well,” Leona jerked his head back towards me, his ears twitching slightly atop his head as the shorter man nodded before they both turned to look towards a man shouldering his way through the crowd.
I followed their gaze and almost immediately made eye contact with a set of gold eyes as I blinked at the tall, muscular young man. He had a serious expression as he approached, his large wolf ears perked atop his head.
“Jack, you’re gonna be keeping an eye on the herbivore while they go around and ‘evaluate’ the clan.” Leona started speaking as soon as the young man came to a stop, gesturing back towards me with a thumb.
Jack’s gaze flickered my way, his eyes widening slightly as he inhaled sharply before he dragged his attention back to Leona, “Why are they evaluating the clan?”
I stepped forward before Leona could speak, wanting to clear up any misunderstandings before they got started, “I was asked to by the head-vampire of this district.”
I could feel both Leona and Ruggie looking towards me, but I ignored them in favor of gauging Jack’s reaction. As he frowned at my words, I felt the urge to continue, but found myself hesitating to mention my status as the Hunter, with Leona’s description of the job still bouncing around in my head.
“He just wants to check in on each of the clans and asked me to do it for him,” I finished carefully, not sure of how else to explain it. I didn’t want to lie, but I also had newfound hesitation about just throwing around the fact that I was the Hunter now.
I could tell that he still had questions, but he seemed to hold himself back as he glanced around the hallway before nodding, “Alright. I’ll just be showing you around, and that’s all?”
Leona snorted but at last shifted so that I could leave the room freely, the grin on his face filled with a frustrating degree of smugness as I slipped past him, “Oh no. They said that they would be keeping tabs on us for as long as it takes to finish their evaluation. You’ll be keeping an eye on them to make sure they don’t stick their nose where it doesn’t belong.”
His eyes glimmered, and I found myself frowning, relieved that he was staying silent about the real reason I was here but unsure of how I felt about the fact that he was once again keeping a secret for me.
He’d done so with Sam, and now he was doing so with one of his own clan members, and it made no sense. I’d gotten the impression from the interaction we’d just had that he was going to be staunchly against me, but here he was assisting me once more.
Which made me wonder if the reason he was having two of his clan members keep an eye on me was just strictly for keeping tabs on what I was doing. After all, it was beyond risky to be a lone mortal, known to attract vampires, surrounded by vampires who were apparently known to be at risk for losing themselves to the insanity that could be brought on by vampirism.
I glanced back at him, confused even as he turned and sauntered back into his room. Evidently done with all of us.
“You got this handled, Jack? I’ve gotta go….” Ruggie trailed off, already looking like he wanted to bolt.
But if Jack noticed Ruggie’s obvious desperation to flee the scene, he didn’t react. Instead he nodded firmly, looking like he’d just been given an incredibly important job, “Yeah, I’ve got this handled. You go on.”
We both watched as the shorter man trotted off without even glancing back. Obviously glad to be slipping out of this particular job as he went off to do whatever it was he was going to do.
I glanced over at the pale haired man next to me at the exact same moment he looked at me. And the awkwardness set in fast as I felt myself shifting around before smiling awkwardly, “I’m Y/n.”
Jack nodded, slowly twisting to start leading me around the clan’s building, his voice low and slightly gruff as he responded with just his name, “Jack.”
I trailed after him, feeling soberly like this was going to be far more difficult than I’d initially expected.
We walked in silence for a lengthy stretch of time with me pondering how to even really get started with my newfound duty.
If I was going to find out anything about why the Savanaclaw clan had more vampires losing themselves to the insanity of the disease, I would have to talk to people here and learn more about vampirism as a whole.
I slowly became so ensnared in my own swirling thoughts that I completely ignored Jack’s motions until he came to a stop in front of me, causing me to slowly stop behind him in confusion, wondering if I'd missed something.
“Why did he send a mortal to evaluate the clan?” I felt myself go still at his simplistic question, faltering slightly as I realized that this was something that I should’ve expected.
In no way did it make sense for the head-vampire of this district to send a mortal to check up on the clans. It would be like sending a sheep into a horde of wolves when said sheep was never supposed to know that the wolves existed outside of stories in the first place.
“I…” I hesitated before sighing slightly, because it was a simple fact. I was going to have to face the full weight of the Hunter and whatever it might entail. I could only hope my job wouldn’t get in the way of what I was here to do.
“I’m the new Hunter for the clans. The head vampire hired me to work under him so that he could find out why so many vampires have been succumbing to the insanity of the vampirism disease.”
Jack was silent, turning to look back at me as he crossed his arms before speaking, “So you’re going to be doing preventative work?”
I nodded slowly at his almost stern-sounding words, surprised that was all he had to say as he nodded. “I’d wondered why Leona was so willing to let you just walk around.”
Jack sighed, rubbing at the back of his neck as he paused with a less-than-pleased expression appearing on his face that didn’t quite match his words, “I’ll help you then.”
I felt my eyes widen at his words, surprised that he was so willing to offer to help me when Rook had implied that most vampires preferred to avoid the Hunter.
Perhaps the vampires, as a whole, recognized the seriousness of the situation and also wanted all of this to be resolved. If that were the case, it certainly would make my life easier.
I found myself smiling at the young man, relieved to not be wholly on my own in this unfamiliar clan. I would still be cautious, but it was nice to have someone offering to assist me, “Then I guess we’ll be working together then.”
He watched me silently for a moment before nodding and straightening, a slight smile flickering across his face, “I guess so.”

-There’s a small knock on the door with no voice accompanying it like there normally would be with Joel coming home, which would be quite curious.-
-Pearlo
Lizzie perks up from where she was cleaning up the last of the things from Grian, Scar, and Mumbo's brief stay. The lack of a shout through the door, or someone just coming straight in, confuses Lizzie.
Instead of answering right away, she walks to the door, shifting a little taller and letting her antenna out to be more intimidating.
"Who is it?" She calls through the door.

Hours in the Moonlight: Persevering Afterlight - 7. Were-vampires
Summary: You hardly knew what to expect from Ruggie, but if Jack said he was the best person to go to, then so be it. If you were lucky, he would be both helpful and nice. But beggars can’t be choosers, and either way you weren’t about to turn down information.

Jack had led me all the way through the Savanaclaw Clan headquarters and then out onto the dimmed streets. And by that time, I was perfectly confused. Because I’d honestly thought that, wherever Ruggie was, it would be in the clan itself.
At the very least, I’d thought that he was pseudo-important to the running of the clan. But it was always possible that I was horribly wrong. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time.
I frowned as I glanced around, noting how cracked and dirty the current sidewalk we were walking on seemed. It was like it hadn’t seen any upkeep at all and was a twisted ankle waiting to happen.
One thing was certain. It definitely wasn’t hard to figure out that we were in the more impoverished part of town, and I almost felt guilty as I slipped over closer to Jack, causing the tall young man to glance my way slightly, though he stayed silent. But it would definitely be lying to say I wasn’t at least a little bit uncomfortable.
This was where the most crime occurred in town, and though I understood why that was, it didn’t make me feel any more comfortable. Especially considering how late an hour it was.
But what confused me even in the midst of my discomfort was why Ruggie would be out here of all places.
“Jack-” I started speaking only to get hushed by the notably canine vampire as he slipped into a nearby alleway. Gesturing for me to follow quietly before pointing towards what appeared to be a veritable horde of children.
I could hear their soft giggles from here, and, a smile slipped onto my face at the sound despite our environment. I found myself scanning the group curiously before I blinked in surprise as my eyes landed on the young man we’d come here to find.
Ruggie knelt among the children, a wide smile on his face as he handed out something that, upon closer inspection, looked suspiciously like bread.
“Is he….?” I trailed off as I looked towards Jack, who nodded with a solemn expression.
“Ruggie works evening shifts and saves the money he gets to buy food for the kids here. He’s seldom around at the clan, but when you need him, you can either find him here or at the store one,” Jack’s voice was pitched lower and soft as he solemnly explained, turning his gaze back towards the scene before as he spoke.
I mirrored his actions, looking back towards where Ruggie knelt. Playing with the children and laughing with them before, at long last, sending them on their way with affectionate head pats and playfully stern orders of them to behave.
And then he turned, his gaze immediately zeroing in on where me and Jack stood in the shadows with a sigh, “You might as well come out now. I don’t know what you were thinking, though, Jack. Bringing our honored guest all the way out here.”
Despite his exasperated tone, something told me that his words weren’t meant to be biting even as we awkwardly, and perhaps somewhat guiltily, slipped out of our hiding place.
“They said they needed to learn more about what happens during ‘the change.’ I knew I couldn’t tell them anything, so I recommended we find you,” Jack was unhesitating as ever as he explained his reasoning while walking over towards where Ruggie stood. Leaving me to trail after him half-awkwardly.
Ruggie, for his part, merely stood with his thin, but toned arms crossed as his gaze flickered between the two of us before it at last came to rest, almost suspiciously, on me, “You don’t already know?”
“I… No,” After a brief moment of hesitation, I answered truthfully, doing my best not to falter too much as I came at least pseudo clean about the whole mess that was my status as the resident vampire hunter.
“I haven’t been in this position very long, and though I know how to do the general work, I don’t know as much about the specifics of vampirism, like ‘the change.’” I met his gaze as my fingers tangled themselves together. But I knew my explanation didn’t sound good even as I silently prayed that he’d just accept it and carry on.
Ruggie stared at me silently before shrugging, seemingly unbothered by my confession despite the way silence had stretched uncomfortably between us, “Okay, but the entire ordeal that is known as ‘the change’ works differently for everyone.”
He started off down the street, strolling back towards the Savanaclaw Clan headquarters and leaving us to follow him. And, after a shared glance, me and Jack started walking after him, listening closely as he began to explain.
“A lot of it depends on the individual themselves and the vampire changing them. Like, if the vampire tried to kill somebody and failed, resulting in a new vampire, that new vampire is probably going to have a harder time of it,” He looked at me pointedly, and I nodded, half understanding what he meant.
If something that traumatic happened and turned me into the very creature who’d tried to kill me, losing my mind would seem like a very real possibility.
He continued as I silently considered his words, “Also, for those who were already affected by wereism, the change is particularly hard since the two diseases don’t mix well.”
I frowned, shaking my head slightly in confusion before I glanced his way, “Why not? They both deal with being more nocturnally active.”
Jack nodded at my words, looking at me from my other side, “Yeah, but nights with a full moon are rough.”
“It’s kind of like the two diseases fight for dominance, and your survival hinges on that fight,” Ruggie explained in a perfectly bored tone as I glanced with horror between the two young men.
“You mean that when someone who is already a were-creature gets bitten by a vampire and changed, they might die simply because the diseases are fighting for dominance?!” I didn’t even bother to disguise my shock. But, at odds with my alarm, Ruggie nodded, and Jack just shrugged.
“I had heard that, but I wasn't sure…” Jack at last offered, almost apologetically as their words sunk in.
“Coincidentally, the full moon is also when we’re most likely to lose vampires in the clan to insanity,” At his words, my gaze snappied back towards where Ruggie walked. His arms now crossed behind his head. Utterly relaxed despite our topic of conversation that even Jack seemed to feel slightly uncomfortable with.
But then, depending on how old of a vampire Ruggie was, perhaps all of this was just old hat to him. A simple fact of his undead life.
After wavering slightly, I found my voice again. Pushing forward to learn more even if this topic had taken a distinctly dark turn far faster than I’d expected, “So, is there a specific type of were-being, like a were-weasel or something, that is more likely to go insane if turned into a vampire or is just random?”
Jack stared at me, quietly echoing, “were-weasel’ and shaking his head while Ruggie’s eyes slid my way, his expression taking on a certain confused tinge as a smile tried to fight his way to face. Like he couldn’t believe that I knew so little about all of this but was also amused by my questioning.
He answered nonetheless, though, shaking his head as he spoke, “Nah, it’s pretty much random. I’ve always figured that, the more traumatic their death, the more likely they are to go insane in the first month or by their first full moon, in the case of were-vampires.”
I nodded, swallowing thickly before glancing between the two of them, “So… Were-vampires? Is that what you guys prefer to go by?”
My words brought a smile fully to Ruggie’s face, as he no longer tried to disguise his amusement, “We mostly just go by the clan name. After all, Savanaclaw is the clan with the most of our kind majority of us, and majority were-vampires end up here.”
I blinked, slightly surprised by his words but nodding as he turned to look towards the doors of their headquarters, a snicker slipping out of him as he nodded towards the building in an oddly amused manner, “But it looks like there’s someone else here who you can ask about stuff now.”
I frowned slightly as he continued to grin, but turned to see Leona propped up in the open doorway of the building. Calling out in a dry voice as soon as I looked his way, “Oi, one of your bosses is here.”
His tone was beyond displeased, and I fought the urge to grimace at his words. At the very least I could agree with him on not being happy about what was no doubt one of Crowley’s lackeys wanting a report already.
It would have been too much to hope that they’d just leave me alone until I got done.
“Go get ‘em tiger,” Ruggie bumped me playfully with his shoulder, causing me to frown at him slightly as he slipped by me. A grin on his face as he snickered once more before disappearing into the building.
But at least he wasn’t as bad or unwilling to help as I’d feared.
