On the afternoon of the 8th of April, 1980, 12-year-old Georgia Crews parents left the family home in Montverde, Florida, to go fishing for catfish on Lake Florence with her brother, Charles. This was a common occurrence in the Crews household; Mike worked as a commercial fisherman and Lake Florence was literally a stone’s throw from their front door.

This day, however, Georgia and her other brother, Tony, both decided to at home. At some time between 5:30PM and 6PM that evening, Georgia and her dog, Tiger, left home to go to the Stop & Go on Country Road 455 where her mother worked. Stop & Go, which was approximately a mile from Georgia’s home, was the only convenience store in the town. Dusk was fast approaching and Georgia was “mortally afraid of the dark” so she wouldn’t be long, she assured her brother.

She was wearing a jeans, a tank top, and was barefoot – one of her many quirks. She had wanted to purchase snacks before settling down at her friend’s house to Kenny Rogers in The Gambler.

Georgia never made it to her friend’s house. In fact, she never even made it to the convenience store....

Magnolia Creek Lane

Several miles south of Montverde, on the west side of Lake Apopka, is a narrow road that accommodates only one car at a time. It is partially paved and goes through a heavily wooded area.

According to one legend, the road is haunted by two hundred passengers who had been killed in a major train wreck. While the road does appear to be built on an old railroad bed, the only documented railroad ran slightly north of this location. We have found no proof that a train wreck ever occurred anywhere near this road, and even if it had, it's doubtful that it would have been a passenger train. Still, such details rarely discourage the legend tellers, and many insist that very strange noises from these woods.

Ghostly Noises in the Woods

Magnolia Creek Lane is where all kinds of horrible things happened back in the 1890s, which accounts for all the stories I heard from people, who told me about frightening noises back in the woods along this road. I went there, but there's a lot of new houses there now, so it's not as wild as it used to be, but it still has a thick forest of oaks. -Brian

Wrecked Souls Still Haunt the Woods

The Magnolia Creek Road is where a railroad used to be. This was way back when there was steam engines, so I don't really know what year it was; anyway, there was a big train wreck that happened on this railroad that killed two hundred people. It was the biggest wreck in Florida, and their souls still haunt the wooded areas where the old rails used to be. I think railroad museum. -big-potato

You Can Hear Screams

There's a creek that runs to Lake Apopka, and that's where that train wreck happened. Along this creek you can hear screams. I went back in there years ago with a buddy, and you can hear loud screams in the woods, but when you try to get near them, they move farther away. They say it's the screams from the train crew that died, but it could be sound that is being reflected from someplace else, because there is a big lake near there and doesn't water carry sound? -Shooter

Shadows of People Walking the Road

My cousin went to Montverde Academy and heard about this road that runs off 455 that used to be a railroad bed; they say that if you go down there at night, you can hear ghostly sounds and see eerie shadows of people walking on the road. I don't know for sure about this, because I never went there, so it is just what I heard. -Michele19

Finally Healthy Enough to Compete on the World Stage, Embiid Chooses USA

Joel Embiid, 29, never seemed destined for international basketball competition. Not that the 7-foot Cameroon native wasn’t capable of playing. Embiid had difficulty staying on the court for his NBA commitment and didn’t want to risk more mileage on his tires.

But times change. Embiid has citizenship in Cameroon and became a citizen of France and the United States in 2022. When it came to decision time for the 2024 Paris Olympic cycle, Embiid decided to play for his adopted home country, the United States. Embiid will have to stay healthy during the upcoming NBA season, but that is a concern for every player.

There is a lot that Embiid can still accomplish in basketball. He hasn’t won an NBA Championship yet and hasn’t come close to playing in one. On the international level, Embiid hasn’t even appeared. If Embiid can stay healthy, there will be plenty of options for Embiid to make waves before he retires.

Embiid Came to the United States at 16

Embiid wouldn’t have considered a basketball career a real possibility as a child. He didn’t even play the sport until he was 15. Embiid dreamed of playing professional volleyball in Europe but pivoted to basketball at age 15. Playing at a camp in Yaounde, Cameroon, he was discovered by NBA player Luc Mbah a Moute.

Mbah a Moute helped mentor Embiid and encouraged him to move to the United States. Embiid enrolled at Montverde Academy in Florida. He would later transfer to another school to get more playing time. Embiid helped The Rock School in Gainesville win a state championship, and he would sign to play for Kansas in college.

Embiid’s size made him attractive to colleges all over the United States. Landing with the Jayhawks allowed him to play with top talent.

Why Is Embiid Eligible for Nation Switch?

Since Embiid had never played for Cameroon, he could play with another country. Embiid’s decision not to play with Cameroon stemmed partly from the fact there was nothing guaranteed. Cameroon is one of 24 teams playing for four spots to gain access to the Olympic tournament.

Throughout Cameroon’s basketball history, it hasn’t notched many major accomplishments. Cameroon has never won the African championship but did finish runner-up in 2007 and in fourth place in 2009. During Cameroon’s last attempt to win the African championship, they placed 16th and lost all three games at the tournament.

Injury Issues Limited Time with Jayhawks

Kansas didn’t get much time with Embiid. The Jayhawks were able to pair him with future NBA champion Andrew Wiggins. Embiid scored 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. A stress fracture in his back ended his freshman season in March. The Jayhawks went on to lose in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Embiid declared for the NBA Draft in April of 2014. In June of that year, he had surgery on his foot, ensuring his start to his professional career would be delayed. That delay would last much longer than what many keeping tabs on up-to-date sports news would have anticipated.

Embiid Flirts with Cameroon, Gets on Court With 76ers

The foot injury Embiid got surgery on would last for two years. Embiid would miss his first two seasons with the Sixers entirely. Embiid did get on the court during the 2016-17 season, averaging 20.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

In 2017, Embiid was listed on the preliminary roster of AfroBasket for Cameroon. Embiid ultimately declined the invitation. He eventually decided to focus on his NBA career while he was making up his mind about international basketball.

Embiid scored 20 or more points per game in all of his seasons in the league. He was named MVP of the 2022-23 season. The most games Embiid has played as a professional was 68 during the 2021-22 season. During the 2022-23 season, Embiid was chosen as the NBA’s MVP.

Team USA Needs a Spark

The recent FIBA basketball World Cup saw the United States not medal for the second straight tournament. It’s the first time that has happened since 1970. The Americans needed to improve at the tournament in size and defense. Embiid can provide that.

Seeing Team USA lose has also inspired many veteran NBA players to offer their services for the 2024 Olympics team. Steph Curry and LeBron James have spoken publicly and said they want to be involved. James is a multiple-time gold medalist, while Curry would like to add the championship to his resume.

Embiid wanted to join the team so his son Arthur, 3, could see him represent his country. The United States has a long history of success in men’s basketball at the Olympics. The USA has won 16 times, earning a win over France in the finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Flirting With France

Embiid spent time in France as a child and always loved the country. When looking for a home for international basketball, Embiid seriously looked at the European nation. French fans may have even thought there was a chance he might commit to them. Embiid was offered French citizenship, and he was accepted in 2022.

France has made a strong push on the international scene with basketball. Recent sports updates show the rest of the world has started to catch up to the United States. France beat the United States during the group stage at the Olympics but lost to the Americans in a rematch in the final.

When Embiid gained citizenship, France hoped to pair him with Rudy Gobert and youngster Victor Wembanyama. Palpitando el Sudamericano: los velocistas, en la frontera de los 10s en 100

Si la carrera de los 100 metros llanos constituye habitualmente uno de los platos fuertes de las grandes citas atléticas, la expectativa también se concentra sobre ella en Sao Paulo, con la nueva edición del Campeonato Sudamericano que arranca este viernes 28 de julio en la pista de Vila Clementina, Sao Paulo. Porque el “field” de inscriptos para la prueba reina incluye a los grandes protagonistas de las últimas temporadas -recuperada allí la presencia de Paulo André Camilo de Oliveira- y la aparición de un nuevo fenómeno de la velocidad internacional, Issamade Asinga, inscripto por Surinam, el país que acaba de otorgarle su pasaporte. Entre la juventud de casi todos estos atletas, su inmenso potencial y el marco competitivo todo está preparado para que ahora (o en los próximos meses), en cuánto se den las condiciones ideales de clima, pueda quebrarse una barrera legendaria: la de los 10 segundos. Hasta ahora el record establecido por el brasileño Robson Caetano da Silva hace 35 años durante el Iberoamericano, en la altitud de México, resistió todos los embates. Seis días más tarde en Lubbock, Texas, volvió a correr el hectómetro cerca de ese nivel (9.89 con viento a favor de 3.1ms) pero, además, bajó los 20 segundos en 200 con viento reglamentario (19.97, con viento de 1.3ms), una marca que es la segunda mejor entre los juniors del mundo, sólo precedida por la de ese fenómeno estadounidense llamado Erriyon Knighton y a quien casi todos apuntan como el “sucesor de Usain Bolt”. Issamade quedó tercero en esa carrera, detrás del ghanés Jans Dadze (19.79) y del estadounidense Courtney Lindsey (19.94). Esa actuación le abrió las puertas a su participación el 24 de junio en el Grand Prix de Nueva York, en el estadio Icahn, por el circuito mayor, donde llegó 2° en los 200 metros con 20.25, sólo precedido por Noah Lyles. Hace pocas semanas, la asociación de Surinam (Surinamse Atletiek Bond), que preside Dennis McDonald, anunció que tanto Issamade como su hermana Busiwa –nacida el 20 de julio de 2001 y que corrió este año los 400 metros vallas en 1:00.78- ya tienen el pasaporte para representar a ese país del área sudamericana. «¡Lo logramos! ¡Asinga puede competir por Surinam!”, indicó el comunicado de la SAB en sus redes sociales, explicando que el trámite se había iniciado ocho meses antes. De inmediato, Issamade declaró que “me siento conectado con Surinam por la cultura y los recuerdos” y que el legado de su padre jugó un papel importante en su elección: “Quiero continuar ese legado y agregarle mi propia parte”.             Issamade fue inscripto por la SAB para competir en este Sudamericano, en lo que sería su debut por Surinam.             Paulo André concentrará las esperanzas brasileñas junto a Erik Felipe, quien ya conoce lo que es triunfar en los Sudamericanos. Ambos, además, formarán un poderoso relevo junto a otros dos velocistas que ya reinaron en los 100metros del Sudamericano: Felipe Bardi y Rodrigo Pereira do Nascimento, contando también el plantel con la gran esperanza junior, Renan Correa de Lima Gallina (10.01 en la altitud de Bogotá, plusmarca y título sudamericano de la u20). “Tengo poco tiempo para sacar un buen resultado y estar en el Mundial, pero mis expectativas son las mejores. Quiero mejorar individualmente y el relevo será una carrera muy importante porque es la única prueba para el Mundial. muy concentrado en este relevo para que corramos bien y vayamos con confianza. Me siento bien y espero que el clima nos favorezca para tener una gran competencia", dijo Paulo André a la CBAT. Nacido en Santo André, pero radicado en Vitória , en Espírito Santo, tiene 24 años - cumple 25 el 20 de agosto.             Pero la velocidad también ha progresado en casi todos los países del área y cada uno de sus representantes llega con la ilusión de producir un impacto o mejorar su performance. Entre ellos también estarán quien ya es un histórico de la especialidad -preferentemente sobre 200 metros llanos, donde todavía ostenta la plusmarca sudamericana- el panameño Alonso Edward. A sus 33 años, viene de obtener la medalla de bronce de los 200 en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe, en San Salvador. Colombia presenta a Carlos Palacios y al juvenil Ronal Longa, quien escoltó a Gallina en el Sudamericano u20 de Bogotá, fijando el tope absoluto de su país en 10.08. Ambos vienen de realizar una gira preparatoria en Europa. Los velocistas paraguayos César Almirón y Misael Jonas Salazar fueron revelaciones de las últimas temporadas y son, además, la base de una muy buena posta corta.
