🇺🇾 La Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí del Uruguay 🇺🇾

🇺🇾 En 1907, los primeros sefaradíes llegaron al Uruguay desde Turquía, huyendo de la creciente intolerancia religiosa y antisemitismo. Se establecieron en el barrio de Ciudad Vieja de Montevideo, donde formaron vínculos sociales y familiares mientras mantenían su lengua, el judeoespañol. Enfrentaron condiciones precarias, viviendo en casas de inquilinato y trabajando como vendedores puerta a puerta o en pequeñas industrias familiares. En la década de 1920, establecieron instituciones clave como Hessed Shel Emet, Israelita Sefaradí de Beneficencia y el Círculo Social Israelita Sefaradí, además de promover la construcción de un cementerio comunitario. En 1932, todas estas instituciones se fusionaron para formar la Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí del Uruguay, y en 1933, se inauguró su primer templo en Ciudad Vieja. Posteriormente, en 1956, se construyó el gran templo Beth Israel, con capacidad para 1.000 personas, inspirado en la Sinagoga Portuguesa de Nueva York. La comunidad se consolidó como parte de la clase media, manteniendo sus raíces culturales y religiosas.

🇺🇸 In 1907, the first Sephardic Jews arrived in Uruguay from Turkey, fleeing increasing religious intolerance and antisemitism. They settled in the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood of Montevideo, forming social and family ties while preserving their language, Judeo-Spanish. Facing precarious conditions, they lived in shared housing and worked as door-to-door vendors or in small family industries. In the 1920s, they established key institutions like Hessed Shel Emet, Israelita Sefaradí de Beneficencia, and the Sephardic Jewish Social Circle, and promoted the creation of a community cemetery. In 1932, these institutions merged to form the Sephardic Jewish Community of Uruguay, and in 1933, they inaugurated their first temple in Ciudad Vieja. First day in Montevideo 🌴 The capital of Uruguay (population: 1.4 out of 3.4 million, founded in 1724) is really chill and obviously not very big. The locals always make an emphasis on the fact that nothing ever happens there, and laugh at the USA produced movies where Uruguay is usually named as an exotic place 🥥🍍🍌🌴 The first part might be close to reality, but to me it is more of a bonus 🥰 Therefore, there's really not much to tell, but I can name some of the things I loved most about the city: ⛱it has a beach (and the longest promenade in the world) 💕the people are extremely nice, welcoming and helpful 🇺🇾the central street's name is my birthday (AFAIK it's the constitution day) 🧉there's more people drinking mate than not at any given moment in any given place . . . . #montevideo #montevideouruguay #visitmontevideo #uruguay🇺🇾 #uruguay #uruguaypost #visituruguay (en Montevidéo, Uruguay) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co95TACKTKk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
