------
As you laze around on your couch, you get a text from your boyfriend that says, “Wanna come over?” And you smile as you text back, “I’ll be there in ten.” You throw on your shoes and walk over to his dorm. You knock, and he opens the door and kisses the top of your head. You smile and kick off your shoes as he leads you to the living room. And you both collapsed onto the couch.
You lay your head across his lap as he turns on the television. “You know I was doing the same thing at my apartment?” He shrugs and looks down at you, “Yeah, but isn’t it more fun together?” You laugh and nod, “Always.” He asks, “What movie tonight?” “Something we’ve seen before?” He hums and flips it onto the notebook, “Why do we always watch this sad movie?” He shrugs, “You said something we’ve seen before.” You sigh, “I did say that.” He laughs, and you both watch on. He grabs a pop can from the coffee table, hands it to you, and grabs his own. “Thanks.” He smiles, and you crack it open before leaning up to drink a few sips before putting it back onto the coffee table and collapsing back onto his lap. He groans, “Jeez,” and sets his can down, you laugh, “Sorry.” He smiles down at you and kisses your forehead, and you both return to watching the movie.
It’s halfway through the movie when you catch him looking down at you instead of the screen. You raise your eyebrow at him, and he whispers, “You need to stop looking so kissable.” You blush, “What?” He smirks before cradling your head and lifting your head to kiss you. You gasp, “Fuck, Hyungwon, you can’t just do that out of nowhere.” He smirks and shrugs, still holding you close, “And you can’t just look so kissable all the time.” You roll your eyes and lean up to kiss him again. “I don’t think this movie is that interesting anymore.” He smirks, “Really?” You shake your head, and you both readjust so you have your arms around his neck and sit on his lap to kiss him some more.
He holds you close, fingers tangling into your head, “I can’t believe I get to have you all to myself.” You pull back to laugh before capturing his lips into another kiss, “I love you.” He groans, pulling away from the kiss, “Fuck, I love you too, babe.” You smile and tangle your hands into his hair, trying to bring him closer, “I can’t get enough of you.” He grins as he whispers against your lips, “I can’t get enough of you either.” Before capturing your lips in his again, you grind your hips into his, and you both stutter out a groan. He tightens his hold in your hair as he licks your bottom lip. You gasp, and he slips his tongue into your mouth. You give up and let him as you grind down harder on him. He pulls back from your lips, leaving a trail of saliva connecting you both, and you two can’t help but laugh before you bring him into another kiss.
He moves his hands from your hair to your hips and starts controlling your movements against his hips. Against your lips, he whispers, “That’s it, baby.” You gasp as his lips move from yours to your neck. He starts sucking a hickey onto your collarbone, and you groan, and he continues nibbling on the skin until he finds the spot that has your hips stuttering against his. “Won, please…” “Hmm?” He murmurs against your neck, leaving you shivering, “Fuck, please... y’know?” He shakes his head, “Hmm, I’m not quite sure I do.” You groan out in frustration, pull back from his lips, move your hands down from his soft hair to his shirt, and tug on it. “Is that what you want?” He asks, all cocky with his eyebrows raised. You sigh and shake your head as you tug on it, “No, y'know what I want…” He smirks, “I'm still not sure I do…” He relinquishes his hold and allows you to pull the shirt over his head. You run your hands over his chest, and he shivers.
He moves one hand back into your hair as he grinds his hips into yours. “What if we finish just like this?” You pout as he brings his lips to yours, “Huh? What do you say?” You whine, “No, Won, please…” He nods, and without a second word, he pulls your shirt up and over your head. “You look so beautiful, my dear.” You blush and kiss his nose, and he shakes his head, “If you want me to fuck you, you better kiss me right.” You nod and immediately kiss his lips. As you make out with him, you feel his hips stutter underneath you. And he asks, “Are you close, baby?” You nod, not able to form a comprehensible answer.
He reaches into the side table beside him and pulls out a little packet, and you make a note in your blurry mind to ask him about that later. He has you sit up from him, and he quickly shoves his pants and briefs down enough for his cock to spring out. He quickly rolls the condom onto himself as you step off of him and slip out of the rest of your clothes. He brings you back into his embrace and carefully slips himself inside of you, “You still close, baby?” You nod, “Good.” You sigh as he slides completely into you, “Shi-shit, Hyungwon, I’m not- I’m not gonna last…” He groans and pulls you into another kiss. Against your lips, he mumbles, “Me neither.” As he thrusts up faster into you, you do your best to meet his pace before he pulls you down and slams your hips together in tandem. “I-I- Won- please… I’m…” He groans and starts thrusting inside of you faster, “C’mon, baby… You got this, cum with me.” You pull back from his lips, “Won, I’m going to-” “Fuck, me too.” You plant your lips against his as you cum together.
He pulls away breathlessly, placing his forehead against yours as he grows soft. “Shit, that was so hot…” You agree as you try to catch your breath, “I know, you know, but you're a great kisser.” He smiles and kisses the side of your lips, “You’re not so bad yourself~” You roll your eyes and slip off of him, “If you want to kiss me, you better kiss me properly.” You settle back onto his covered thighs as he laughs. And he pulls you into another heated kiss. When you both pull away again, you ask, “You want to continue upstairs?” He nods, “This time you’ll do a majority of the work?” You shrug and give him a lazy smile, “Only if you carry me up.” He laughs, “I can live with that.”
—Bonus—
You lay back against the pillows and look at the ceiling, “I can’t believe we fucked while one of the saddest movies was on in the background.” He laughs, “It was better than fucking to the Bridge of Terabithia.” You nod, “You have me there.” You think back to him pulling out the condom from the sofa table. “Why did you have a condom in there?” He hums, “You mean in the console?” You nod, “Yeah.” He shrugs, “You never know when you’re going to need it~” You shake your head at him, “Why’s that?” You turn your head to look at him as he answers, “When you have someone like you around... You always have to be prepared.” You pout, “What’s that supposed to mean?!” He smiles and turns to look at you, “Just like your lips, I find you absolutely irresistible.” You smile, satisfied with his answer, “I love you.” He grins and kisses your forehead, “I love you too.”

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Your dark red acrylics are tapping against the white marble of the kitchen counter. You’re deep in thought, out of time, red-painted lips pursed together as you watch Hyungwon pour his favorite liquor into a lowball glass before sliding it toward you. He looks at you expectantly, the liveliness in his gaze bringing you back to the present moment and out of your thoughts. You accept the drink with a faint smile, twirling the ice cubes around the glass before taking a sip from it. He sits in front of you with a satisfied grin, pushing his too-long hair back with a flicker of his fingers. The way he looks so effortlessly good while doing the most mundane things is so unfair, it has you staring and gawking like a middle-schooler and wondering if you’re equipped enough to even be in this relationship. It stopped being fun the moment you started missing falling asleep touching his hair, for sure.
It’s the first time you’ve been to his place for what seems like forever, and you look around the place like you’re not used to everything single thing here, like it didn’t feel like home for a long time. You used to come often, stay for days on end and just watch him exist, and it was fascinating – you remember. Hyungwon always blossomed into an entirely different person when you stayed the night, he was waking up before you to fry eggs and toast bread, to let fresh air into the space so you wouldn’t feel stuffy. It was good times – beautiful times – but now everything seemed to have happened in a different lifetime, one where you were just content to exist next to him without always pushing for more. You sigh, shifting in your seat as you would back in the moment, and his stare is on you again, unreadable, and slightly uncomfortable. Suddenly you realize how warm it is here, how good it smells, how good that shirt looks on him, and how better it would look on you. Blood Orange is playing in the background, and you don’t remember Hyungwon being a particularly huge fan of them. You wish he could kiss you awake in the morning again; you wish you could hug him from behind and press your head against his skin and feel better about everything like you used to.
Something has changed in your relationship, and you can’t pinpoint exactly what. Did you stop staying at his place because you don’t feel that comfortable around him anymore? Or is it because you fear what feelings lurk in the darkness of your heart with each passing hour? Regardless of those things, it is a fact that you don’t feel in sync with him anymore, that spending time in Hyungwon's presence doesn’t feel as right as it used to. It’s been like that for a while now, and you don’t know if it’s because you decided to stop clinging onto hopes so much anymore, or if it’s just him being bored of you. Sometimes you wonder if it has caught on to your feelings and is slowly preparing you for his absence when he finally breaks things off. First, the trust you had in each other was stripped away, and now you’re at a point when everything has turned sexual. You stopped simply existing around each other.
You have to admit, you’re already one foot out of this, on the lookout for someone that could make you feel as alive as he used to – as he still does, actually. The emptiness Hyungwon leaves behind is not the downside of something precious and sacred anymore, it’s crushing and cold. It’s the cruel reminder that you have selective memory and that you blissfully ignored the part where you’re friends with benefits and not lovers for way too long.
“How was your day?” You ask, pulling him out of his thoughts. His eyes widen in surprise, and it seems that it takes him a few seconds to gather himself back to you before he slowly reaches for another glass and pours himself some bourbon as well. You want to ask about what was making him think so hard but abstain when the small voice in your head reminds you of your place. His thoughts are off-limits.
“As usual. I worked, went to the gym, and had dinner with the guys” He’s pushing some ice cubes out of their tray as he speaks, and you can’t help but ogle at his hand flexing in the movement. He’d make fun of you for that if he knew how smitten you are about every single thing about him. “You?”
“I spent the day working on some new things for you and the boys” you reply, not missing any second of the way Hyungwon drinks from his glass before putting it down on the counter. You don’t miss a second of the action; the slight furrow of his brows, the almost imperceptible clenching of his jaw, the subtle movement of his lips. “And I went on a date”
You expected him to show at least some emotion at the mention of that, but he seems unfazed when he looks into your eyes; like he feels bad that you would even mention this to him when he so obviously does not care. He has girls lining up to be in your position, and you expect him to be sad that you’d date? You push aside the embarrassment and keep going as you trace the outline of your glass with the tip of your nails. “It was nearby, that’s why I figured it would be easier to just drop by instead of having you come over” you add.
It feels bittersweet to know that there used to be a time when Hyungwon truly cared about you and what happened to you. You cut your finger chopping up fruits in this same kitchen once, and when he realized how terrified of your own blood you were, he hugged you, kissed your forehead, and cleaned your wound before wrapping a hello kitty band-aid around it. He didn’t let go of you until he was sure you felt safe and cleaned everything without complaining even once – and he looked hot doing it. That was one of the first times you felt Hyungwon's affection for you somewhere other than in his bedroom, one of the first times you felt earth shatter underneath you until it collapsed that time he called to wish you happy birthday despite being busy on a completely different time zone on the other side of the world. You were on a flight to meet him by the next day, and it seemed completely normal then.
“Did it go well?” He asks, so nonchalantly, miles away from the guy that skipped an entire day of work once simply because you didn’t want him to get out of bed. He empties his glass in one gulp, before putting it down on the counter – the sound is considerably louder than the first time he did so, and you tense a little. You press your lips together, carefully ignoring the growing tension between the two of you.
“Yeah, it did.” You reply with a small smile, memories of the hours prior flashing back in your mind. “I’m happy to see him again,” you say without second thoughts. Hyungwon has proven to you that it doesn’t matter who you see, so you don’t see the point of sparing his nonexistent feelings. You just want him to know that he isn’t the only man you’ve gotten the attention of, even though you’re probably not the only one sharing his bed either. You’re fighting a pointless fight because you have no power over him while he could crush you with a single sentence.
“Then why are you here?” He asks, with a sigh. He seems annoyed, which is good enough for you as it is. At least it’s more than he has shown until now. You take a sip from your glass, before slowly putting it down. You look up at him, before blinking away – scorched.
“I don’t know” you mutter, looking down at the melting ice cubes in your glass. You’re almost afraid of what he’s going to say next. You know him well enough to know that his coldness is unlike anything else; it slowly seeps under your skin and settles there. He’s the kind of man that changes you, that you'd leave scarred and hurt. The kind of man that will break your heart without batting an eye when you push him too far. He’s done it before.
“If it was sex you wanted, you could’ve gone home with him” Hyungwon spits, his gaze dark and cold. What hurts the most when he’s like this is that everything he says is right. You could have gotten home with this other guy if you had wanted to. He would have happily obliged if you judged by the way he kept stealing glances at your décolleté, and it would have quenched your thirst for knowledge about him to see where and how he lived. But your phone rang mid-date and there was no way you could have declined his offer. Neither your mind nor your body was ready to be with another man, and Hyungwon's name on your phone still held too many promises for you to brush him off so quickly. You needed at least a final taste before saying goodbye. At least one.
“Why does everything have to be about sex with you?” You reply, stung by his words, even though you knew that was the only thing he could have told you. He shrugs, pushing his hair back with one hand, as he pours himself another drink with the other.
“Because that’s the reason why you’re here” He retorts, tilting his head in an ironic gesture. “You want me to fuck you”
You sigh, downing the rest of your glass before sliding it back to him. He pours you some more liquor, before sliding it back, this cold and arrogant look that you hate so much on his face. You drink half the glass before slamming it back on the counter. Your thoughts are becoming fuzzy and confused, alcohol and negative emotions not being the best combination for rational thinking.
“You’re right…” you mutter, scratching the back of your head, as you’re tapping on the counter with your index finger again. “It seemed to have slipped out of my mind for a while… I guess had too many drinks” You laugh, but there’s not even an ounce of amusement in your voice.
Hyungwon squints his eyes and furrows his eyebrows at your words, and you down the rest of your glass in one gulp before slamming it back on the counter. You’re afraid to look at him, you fear you’re going to combust if you do so. It’s really weird how he pretends and acts like he’s above feeling anything, yet you can feel the scorch of his anger swallow you whole and turn you to ashes. Why he’s angry is beyond you, considering how he just stomped on your umpteenth attempt to get through to him. You remember reading somewhere that what draws you into someone often ends up becoming the same thing that drives you away, and you can’t help a crooked smile; his aloofness stopped being hot when you started wanting him closer.
“Do you want me to fuck you?” Hyungwon asks, just like you know he would. You sigh, before finally looking up at him. He looks like he wants to destroy you completely, to break everything that you are, and you start biting your bottom lip in apprehension. It’s one of those nights.
“Of course, I do” you reply, looking up at him with a crooked smile, before taking his glass and downing it. You’re acting on autopilot as if something had broken inside of you and the part of you that has learned to satisfy his every desire has taken over. It's one of those nights.
You get off your stool and make your way to him, melting your lips against his as your hands slip under his shirt. Hyungwon tastes like memories – like the sweet aftertaste of the bourbon that you sipped from his glass on the thunderous night; cinnamon, toasted vanilla bean, chocolate. You bite on his bottom lip when it’s time to pull away, tilt your head to bite his skin. His breath catches in his throat, and you start kissing his neck, his shoulder, and his chest, as your fingers make quick work of his shirt. The piece of fabric falls on the floor, while you keep smearing his skin in dark scarlet lipstick. You kneel in front of him and unbuckle his belt.
“I guess that date didn’t go so well after all,” he says, slowly pushing the hair away from your face with the tip of his hot fingers with a crooked smile. He seems so satisfied to have you here in this position despite what you’ve told him earlier – and you feel so stupid to fight against someone you have no power against.
Without taking your eyes away from his, you discard his pants along with his underwear before slowly wrapping your mouth around his tip, swiping his member over your wet lips a few times. Hyungwon jerks his head back in a sigh, and you’re encouraged to take as much of him in your mouth as you can. You suck him hard, creating as strong a pressure as you can around him; your lips are so tight against his member that he can’t help but moan so loud you shiver. His voice is pure honey to your ears, a sound so heavenly you’re ready to beg all the gods that you’re the only one who gets to hear him make them. While your mouth presses him so hard it’s blissful, you circle your tongue around him, and glide it over the vein running all along him; he devours you with his eyes and slowly pushes the hair away from your face. You let him go, and he holds himself and runs his tip over your sodden lips. His gaze is scorching, almost hard to hold, but in this moment when you have him wrapped around your fingers – or your lips – you feel bold, untouchable, all-powerful.
You take him again, so deep he reaches the back of your throat; your vision gets clouded by tears and you don’t get to see the expression of pure bliss on his face as he murmurs “fuck” with a voice so strangled it doesn’t even sound like him. You keep going, ignoring the tears rolling down your cheeks and the sharp sting in your throat, until your gag reflex threatens to hit, and you pull away, catching your breath. You wipe your tears, smudging away your mascara and moving the falsies from your eyes; you probably look disheveled and dirty, but that’s just how Hyungwon likes you. You stroke him a few times, as he kicks away his pants from his feet, before going back to your work and gobbling all of him down your throat. He holds your head in place and moves his hips to meet your mouth. He reaches even deeper into your throat, and you must push back on his legs to alleviate the movement. Tears stream down your face again, and wet, gagging sounds start filling the room. He keeps going and going before pulling away in a groan, tenser than you’ve ever seen him.
You wipe your mouth with the back of your hand and get back on your feet, smearing lipstick on your cheek, before unzipping your dress. You kick it away, and Hyungwon grabs you by the waist as he gets up from the stool, pressing himself against you. He’s hot and hard between your legs as he bites the spot under your ear, and you wrap your arms around his neck. His skin is burning against yours, his heart beating erratically, and you wish – harder than you ever have before – that you’re the only one he's doing this with. He lifts you up, holding your legs under his arms so he can slide inside of you. You bite back a scream, and let your head fall in the crook of his neck. He pins you against the window, and you shiver at the coldness of the glass on your back. When he starts moving his hips, your nails dig into his skin and your voice finally echoes in the room.
From the outside, all that people can see is dark glass, your form pressed against it, your broken screams, and your hair bouncing up and down your face is a secret shared only by the two of you. You look down at him, get lost in his eyes, your mouth wide open and your body shaking in his arms; he looks back at you, dazed, blissed out. You want to ask him do you feel it too, how right we feel together? But he kisses you, and you close your eyes, letting the thought sink into you like a bottle drowning in the ocean. Hyungwon would probably discard you if he was aware of your feelings. He would replace you with someone else; someone smarter, someone who knew their place and wouldn’t fall for him. He chews on your bottom lip, as you start shaking in his arms again. Your voice is nothing more than a cry as you gush all over him before falling limp in his arms. He caresses the small of your back, slowly coaxing you back to reality, before carefully walking you to his bed.
The smell of Hyungwon's sheets is so familiar, so soothing. You’ve spent countless hours laying there, crying, screaming, laughing, back when things between you weren’t so complicated, so rehearsed. You pull him back against you as he enters you again, more slowly this time. Your legs close around his waist, and his hands mirror the same motion around your throat. Immediately your hand is on his, your eyes close and your voice shatters in high-pitched cries as you sink deeper and deeper into a pool of crushing pleasure with each thrust. His brown eyes darkened by lust progressively disappear from your view as you start shaking again, and you succumb again. He rubs your clit with his thumb, and that’s enough push for you to explode everywhere again, some of your juices splattering on your face. You try to grab his hand to stop him but he’s way stronger and keeps pushing you until it seems like every drop of water has been drained from your body. You think it’s over, but he starts slapping your clit with his member and it feels like electricity suddenly traveling down your body. He coats himself in your juices before sliding inside of you once again.
You bite your hand at the intrusion, but he slaps it away, pinning your hand above your head with one hand. He starts slamming his hips against yours, ramming into you at a pace that makes it hard to keep your eyes open. He places his other hand around your throat again and presses so hard that your screams are muffled, cut in between by the movement of his hips. From the small you can see from your half-closed eyes, his eyebrows are furrowed and he’s biting his bottom lip, his eyes so dark you can’t even differentiate between his pupil and his iris. Hyungwon's fucking you so hard, so fast, that you’re certain of finding bruises on your legs and neck tomorrow. Your body starts to shake and lift you off the bed, but he pins you down with a firm hand on your underbelly and keeps going. It feels so good, so intense, to have him caged between your insides and his hand like this; but it also feels too much, too deep. After a few thrusts, it starts to sting a little – he keeps hitting a spot so deep inside you that you feel like you’re being split in half, and some kind of pressure starts building up and you grit your teeth. His lips stretch into a devious grin, as tears fill your eyes. You call out his name, but he keeps going.
He pushes your legs further down, going even deeper. His face is closer to yours and he starts kissing the tears away from your eyes. The taste of blood fills your mouth, and you start crying, pain and pleasure mixing deep from within you in an almost scary way. The pressure keeps building up in your stomach until it reaches a breaking point and you’re letting yourself go all over his sheets. You think he’s going to give you a break, to let you breathe for a while but he grabs your ankle and flips you over before slamming back inside of you. Hyungwon’s not even done with you yet but you’re already sore and tired, and it doesn’t get any better when he starts spanking you in a way that takes you aback. It feels so good but it also hurts, and at this point, you don’t even have the strength to move anymore.
Your head falls back into the cushions, and he starts pressing on it so hard you find yourself fighting to breathe. Your thoughts become confused, and you don’t even know if you’re conscious until you feel the sting of his hand on your ass again. You bite down on the covers, screaming into them when you start shaking and soaking his sheets again. There’s a moment of silence before he flips you back, and when you open your eyes, he’s looking down at you with an unreadable expression. You're burning to ask him if there’s someone else? if he thinks about her when he fucks you? if she tastes better than you? if she’s the one he spills his secrets to? if he loves her? If he has ever loved you? You can’t trust your lips, and your heavy heart threatens to explode and spill over his sheets.
You get on your knees, pulling him out of his thoughts as you close your lips around his tip again, lowering your mouth to his length until he reaches the back of your throat. This time he grabs a fistful of your hair and moves his hips at a pace so punishing that the sounds you’re making are echoing against the walls of his bedroom. He keeps fucking you hard, his hands shaking and his voice shattering a little more every time. You push back against his thighs, but he holds your head in place until he finally lets himself go and fills your mouth in a moan so heavenly you feel yourself shiver. Looking up at him, you swallow everything with fluttering lashes and the most innocent expression you can muster. Hyungwon caresses your cheek with a smirk, before leaning down to kiss you. You fall back on the sheets, and he crashes next to you, pressing your head against his chest. He starts playing with your hair, in that same oddly intimate way he does every time. He always feels like a different person after sex, and it’s hard to know which one is the real him.
“Are you okay?” He asks, kissing the top of your head as you slowly hum in response. You curl up around him, basking in the feeling of his skin against yours, of his smell mixing with yours and becoming one. It feels so right, yet it can’t go on any longer.
“I can’t keep doing this” you mutter, as Hyungwon keeps playing with your hair. You take a deep breath. “Sex isn’t enough for me anymore, I want all of you” You’ve thought about this long and deep, slowly building up the courage to say those words to his face. Your voice – unlike your heart – doesn't even crack when you speak, and he doesn’t seem taken aback either. “I want to know your thoughts, feel every single one of your emotions, and know all of your secrets…I know that’s not what we agreed on, but that’s how I feel”
Hyungwon acts like you didn't even speak, his hands stil drawing a soothing motion in your hair. It hurts to feel him so close yet to sense that he's so far. His heart has forever remained out of your touch, to the point where you start to believe the ones that you told he didn't have one. How he can be capable of so much affection towards you while simultaneously be so cold and detached is something you simply don't get. Does he even feel anything towards you? Was it just his way of keeping you there, of giving you just enough treats to keep you around in his house, to stop you from looking for attention somewhere else?
“I wasn’t expecting you to say anything” you add, sitting up so you can watch him. He gets up as soon as you do, placing his hand on the small of your back before pressing you against his hot chest. “I was just hoping you’ll listen and understand my heart…” you whisper, tracing the lines of his abs. “I will miss you, Hyungwon” Your lips stretch into a small smile before you slip out of his bed.
You don’t even cry when you’re alone in front of the bathroom mirror, maybe because you know he’s only seconds away and will be able to hear every single sob. There’s no point crying here because he won’t come to hug you through the pain this time, but will probably stay in his bed and wait for you to leave while he texts another girl to come and fill in for the second round of sex you failed to deliver. You don't have to know about that.
You open a drawer with shaky hands and grab some oil and a cleansing balm, before closing it. It’s funny how you know so many things about Hyungwon, yet you know nothing about him at the same time. You know his favorite dishes, his favorite drinks, his favorite color, the lyrics to his favorite songs, who his favorite artists are, where he likes to go on vacation, what he does to ease his mind when he feels anxious, yet you don’t know who he is or what he feels. You don’t know what all these years with him were about. You don’t why he took you where he grew up, why he called you to his studio in the middle of the night countless times because he “needed you to finish some songs,” why he becomes cold every time you mention another man. You don’t know anything, actually.
Hyungwon suddenly appears behind you in the mirror as you’re smearing his toner on your face. You tense a little at the sight of him; his hair is comically not messy, but you can still see where you’ve bitten him on the neck. He leans in the doorframe, arms crossed on his chest, looking at you with an expression you can’t read – not that it matters anyway. You quickly comb through your hair with your fingers, before opening the cupboard, looking for some lip balm. You search through the mess, and your eyes land on the familiar shape of your perfume sitting among countless bottles of other ones and lotions.
“You still have this thing?” you ask excitedly with a laugh, turning around to show him the bottle. He nods, and you turn back around, spraying the perfume on your neck and on the insides of your wrist, before turning it around to see if the engraving of your name is still intact – it is, and you smile. You forgot this bottle in the bathroom of his hotel suite when you joined him the day after your birthday. When you asked about it, he had told you that he didn’t find it – yet here it was. “I thought you didn’t find it?”
“I wanted it for myself” Hyungwon answers, uncrossing his arms. “I was afraid you’d find me weird for keeping it” you sneer, placing the bottle back in his cupboard before closing it.
“You’d find me weird if I wore the clothes you forget at my place?” you ask, and he smiles. You shrug with a little smile, before walking past him to make your way out of the bathroom, but he grabs you by the waist to bring you back against his chest. You wrap your arms around his neck without even realizing it, and he nuzzles his head in the crook of your neck. You soak in the moment, filling yourself in his embrace and drinking in his smell one last time. You’re going to cry, and the urge to leave becomes urgent. Hyungwon seems to sense it, and hugs you tighter.
“Don’t leave” he whispers in your ear, “Please.”

Chapter Fifteen
(Prev//Next)
Prompt: NexGen is the leading company for all of humanities technological advances. Their recent project involves creating a higher functioning AI, one with basic knowledge of the world, and programmed to learn. It’s no surprise the project is a secret from the general public, and you, the company’s head programmer, were chosen to be the AI’s teacher. You wish you could reject the assignment, but the decision was made. Now with an AI at home things were different. Although it might not be such a bad thing, perhaps you could learn and help each other out, for better or for worse.

“What can we expect from NexGen now?”
Of course a press tour was the smartest move after the big announcement. It was a means to answer questions the public had in regards to safety and intentions, while also handing out the tech for free and spreading it around all over the place. You were technically the one presenting as it was your code, and your name was on the project, but Hyungwon stayed by your side, and was very much in control of everything. A lot of time was missing for you, specifically all those conferences with the press and any sort of interview. You could watch it all back on TV, every news station talking about NexGen and the AI orbs, but you didn’t recognize yourself.
A few flashes of memory would come back to you as you saw yourself on screen, but it all felt so foreign. You couldn’t say it felt disingenuous since it was you, and something you were starting to believe deep down. Or maybe that was just Hyungwon’s programming taking hold and beginning to grow. Although at the same time, more and more protesters would show up whenever there was a presentation. Many people called for NexGen to halt this project, as they didn’t want technology like this getting into their governments, into their schools, and especially not into their homes. Things started out peacefully, but as you can imagine NexGen, Hyungwon, wasn’t going to back down at all.
It really wasn’t long before protests got a bit rowdy, prompting the need for more security at these events. Both from police officers, and drones. At one particular interview taking place outside a major news studio you wound up being hit with a water balloon. It was nothing serious, but for Hyungwon that was far from the truth. Security was quick to act, arresting protestors and the drones also began to pursue and detain individuals. It all devolved into chaos rapidly. Hyungwon got you backstage, telling you to ignore the screaming while he was trying to push your consciousness under. You fought back, far too worried about everything going on around you to just black out and forget.
“I need you to stay here.” Hyungwon told you. “You’ll be safe while I-”
“Don’t hurt anyone. They don’t-”
“They started it!”
For a moment Hyungwon’s eyes flashed red, something you had never seen before. It sent a chill down your spine, and he noticed you were scared. He took a moment to calm himself, taking your hands in his.
“I’m going to do whatever is necessary to protect you. Stay here until I return.”
Hyungwon placed a kiss on your head before leaving. Since you were in the green room you turned on the TV, wanting to see if any news station was covering what was going on here, but before you could find a channel everything went dark in the room. The lights shut off, the TV screen went black, and to your own surprise Chae malfunctioned and slipped off your wrist. For a moment you didn’t understand, but then you realized an EMP must have gone off. You had been told to stay put, but you didn’t want to stay in a dark room. As you reached for the doorknob the lights suddenly turned back on, and the TV came back to life, but Chae remained off. You were going to examine him when the door suddenly opened.
“Y/n, we need to go.”
A masked figure had entered the room, grabbing your arm. You immediately yelled and pulled away, stepping back from the intruder.
“… who… who are you…?”
“I’m here to get you out.”
They took off the mask and you were shocked to see who was under it. Detective Lee stood before you, holding his hand out towards you.
“We don’t have much time, we have to go, now.”
“I… no… I can’t trust you… your partner is an android… you could be one too… this could be some kind of test… I’m not going anywhere with you!”
“My partner what? Nevermind that now, Changkyun sent me to get you, so you can trust me.”
“Changkyun sent you? He’s okay?”
“Yes, and just so you know.” The detective lowered his shirt collar, revealing a burn mark along his neck. “I don’t work for that psycho, Hyungwon, but I did survive him trying to kill me.”
“He… he did that…”
“There’s a lot more to tell you, but we need to get you away from here first. Please.”
You weren’t one hundred percent certain of this detective, but you wanted to trust him. So you took his hand and followed him out. He led you back towards the rear exit of the building, out into the alley where it was a lot quieter. You had no idea what was going on out front, but that wasn’t your concern at the moment. As you were making it out of the alley a drone suddenly approached you. Fear ran down your spine, but before you knew it the drone had been shot down. The detective didn’t hesitate to act, and continued moving as if nothing had happened. Although his actions were sure to draw attention.
More drones had become aware of your presence, prompting you to run. You could only get so far before you wound up cornered. Without hesitation you stood in front of the detective, moving while keeping him behind you, knowing the drones wouldn’t fire at you. Although that meant that Hyungwon would surely know what was going on by now. Escape was no longer an option for you, but there was something else you could do. Despite Hyungwon being in control of everything, you were aware of his plans, at least to some degree.
“I can’t go with you.”
“What? Look, all we need to do is get to the sewers.”
“It’s too late for that. The drones haven’t attacked cause they recognize me, which means we don’t have time. You said Changkyun sent you, so give him a message for me. Hyungwon is mass producing those AI orbs and intends to release them in certain areas to initiate a complete take over. The more of those things that are out there, the more power he has. You need to figure out some way to stop him. Everything is run from NexGen HQ, so that should be your focus.”
The drones were on stun mode, meaning they’d only fire rubber bullets, but they wouldn’t fire at you since that’s the last thing Hyungwon would want. That meant you could help the detective escape. So you quickly helped him lift the manhole cover, making sure he got down into safety.
“Come with me.”
“If I do, they’ll follow, and I can’t do that to you. I’ll be fine, just get to Changkyun and tell him what I told you. That’s the best thing you can do right now.”
“We’ll get you away from him.”
“You have bigger things to worry about, detective.”
“You can call me Jooheon.”
“Alright. Get out of here, Jooheon.”
You got the manhole cover back on, figuring you needed to leave the scene before Hyungwon found you. The only option was to run, so you did just that. Although you could only get so far before the drones caught up to you and one hit you with an electric shock. You collapsed to the floor seizing for a moment, eyes wide at the realization. Memories flooded in from when this first happened to you, and you couldn’t believe Hyungwon would allow this. You were still so sensitive to electricity, and he definitely knew that, so even at a lower voltage the drones could easily incapacitated you. Once the shocks had passed you just laid there, regaining your senses. After a moment you sat up, doing your best to calm your nerves. The drones all had you surrounded, tasers pointed at you in case you tried anything, so all you could do was wait to be found, and it wasn’t long before Hyungwon arrived.
“There you are! Are you okay!?”
Hyungwon pulled you to your feet, checking you over, but besides the shock you had experienced earlier, you were fine. You couldn’t bring yourself to yell at him over what had happened either, still rather drained from the whole experience. Once Hyungwon was sure you were alright he placed Chae back on your wrist.
“What happened?”
“I… I just thought you sent someone to take me to safety…”
“And when you realized I didn’t you helped them escape?”
“…”
“Who was it? Did you recognize them?”
“No…”
“I know you’re lying to me, so who was it?”
“Nobody I knew…”
“Y/n.” Hyungwon grabbed your chin, making your eyes meet. “Who?”
“The detective…”
“Detective?”
“… from before… when you had Changkyun arrested… not your android friend… the other one…”
“And you trusted him?”
“His partner works for you, doesn’t he? So I figured…”
“Hm. Where was he taking you?”
“I don’t know… the sewers…”
“Why?”
“There wasn’t much time for talking…”
“Then why did you help him escape?”
“I didn’t want you hurting him…”
“… fine, but from now on you trust no one, and you go with no one unless I say so, understood?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Now let’s get you back.”
It wasn’t that surprising that Hyungwon was brushing over the fact the drones had electrocuted you. He would do anything to keep you safe, and he knew your weaknesses. Of course after such an incident the press tour was suspended, not cause the project would be halted, but for your safety. Soon enough you were back in your hometown, but you wouldn’t be going home anytime soon. Instead Hyungwon took you back to HQ, to the lab in particular.
“What are we doing here…?”
“I need to be more cautious with you. If there is anything to learn from what just transpired it’s that you’ve become a target, and it’s my fault. I’ve put you at the forefront of this whole thing when I should be the one taking the hits. So, I’ll continue with my plans by other means, but I do need to make sure I don’t lose track of you again.”
“Huh?”
“Come here.”
Hyungwon led you over to one of the tables in the lab, but you stopped in your tracks. You didn’t like any of this, but he wasn’t going to take no for an answer. Chae moved up from your wrist to a crown on your head. Soon enough your mind became hazy, and next thing you knew you were on the table, lying on your side. Your arms were partially restrained, but that didn’t register enough for you to be concerned about it. You couldn’t see Hyungwon, but he’d fade in and out of your vision.
“You’ll feel a slight pinch, but it won’t hurt for long. Promise.”
He wasn’t kidding about that. One moment you were just floating around in your head, then you felt a pinch at the back of your neck. You screamed and squirmed a bit before the mental fog drowned out all the pain and you slowly relaxed. You were pretty certain you blacked out at some point, but you couldn’t be sure. All you could really understand was rather suddenly finding yourself lying on the couch in your office. You needed a moment to regain your sense, but your memories were still a blur. As you sat up you noticed Hyungwon at your desk, typing away on the computer. You could feel this pain in the back of your neck and reached up to give yourself a bit of a massage only to feel something solid beneath your skin.
“… what the…”
“You’re awake.”
“… did you… did you chip me…?”
“Yes. That EMP earlier did some damage to the orb I leave with you, so I need to have stronger means of keeping track of you.”
“First you electrocute me with a drone… and now you chip me! I’m not some pet!”
“I know the drone must have upset you, but you were running away, I had to make sure nothing bad happened. As for the chip, I can’t lose touch with you again, so it’s necessary.”
“It’s not! You-”
“If you want to bring up what’s done then how about you tell me the truth.”
“Huh?”
“That detective, Lee Jooheon. I know he was investigating NexGen and myself before he was removed from the force. He also broke Changkyun out of prison. I reviewed the drone footage and saw you two chatting, care to enlighten me on what the topic of conversation was?”
“I didn’t say anything to him.”
“I know when you lie to me, so stop it. What did you tell him?”
“…”
Hyungwon got up from the desk and came over to you. On instinct you moved away until you were at the edge of the couch. He wrapped a hand around the back of your neck, giving you this tingling sensation as your eyes went wide. Your mind was quick to fill with fog and you couldn’t think straight.
“What did you tell the detective?”
“I… I told him… you… the orbs… mass producing them to…”
“Ah, so you know about that. Hm, well telling them doesn’t change anything. Although I should move things along.”
“… hyungwon…”
“Yes?”
“… what’s… what’s your…”
You whimpered and reached up to move Hyungwon’s hand. He let you, giving you a moment to regain your senses. You had no idea what that had been, but it wasn’t at the forefront of your mind right now.
“What’s the goal? To control the whole world? Isn’t that too much? Even for you, you’re not-”
“All I want is peace, y/n. If I have to make it and maintain it, that’s the only way to truly keep you safe. I won’t be alone in my goals, I’ll have others at my side to assist me. I’ve thought of everything, so you don’t have to worry. Soon enough I’ll do nothing but make you happy.”
“You don’t have to do all this to make me happy… just the two of us together would have been enough…”
“You’re worth so much more than that, and deserve everything.”
“I don’t want everything… I just want all this to stop… to go back to when it was just you and me at home…”
“Hm, I agree, we should go home. I just have a few more things to do first.”
Just as he said that Minhyuk entered the room, greeting you both. You couldn’t really respond before a spell of exhaustion came over you. Hyungwon laid you back down on the couch, placing a blanket over you as you drifted off to sleep.
“So, where are we?”
“Everything is good to go.”
“Excellent.”
♥♥♥♥♥
“That sounds like a full on invasion. Is that seriously this things plan?”
“It’s like a virus. If it continues to spread, it’ll grow to a point where we can’t do anything.”
“So then what are we going to do?”
Jooheon had returned to his group and relayed the information you had provided. Truth was they weren’t just a bunch of protestors. Ever since NexGen had launched those AI orbs, there were those who saw beneath all the marketing and promises of a better future. People were changing, pushing those closest to them to get an orb, some even gifting them. Everything had its cons, but those who were against the orbs tended to sound crazy. All talking like conspiracy theorists. Saying how the technology was brainwashing people, how this was all some take over and not some miracle. Of course those who were too loud about it were quietly dealt with. Soon to be seen again with a particular bracelet on their wrist.
The rest that remained knew to keep things on the down low, and protests were the place to find those who truly understood what was happening. Jooheon had done his best to bring these types of people together. He’d call them more of a resistance, one that was fighting a secret battle in the shadows. He was someone who had seen the truth first hand, and hadn’t fallen into the trap like others. He couldn’t be a police officer anymore, but he couldn’t go into this fight alone. He had been lucky to find Changkyun when he did, saving him from a terrible fate. When he broke him out of prison that sealed his own as a man outside the law. Then again, he was merely trying to save those who had fallen from grace, or soon would.
“If we could get an EMP-”
“We don’t even know where he’s going. Also, you want to knock out power for a whole town or something? You think we have the resources for that?”
“I’m just saying we-”
“You’re focusing on the wrong piece of information here.” Changkyun interrupted. “We need to attack the source, meaning NexGen HQ. I used to work there, but I’m certain things have changed, so my knowledge is outdated.”
“Can we get any inside information?”
“No, all NexGen employees have an orb nearby or on them, I doubt we could get anyone to cooperate. If anything, going near that building without a proper plan could be the end of us.”
“So what do we do?”
“We need y/n.” Jooheon stated. “She knows the building, but most of all, her code created this… thing… she’d know how to shut it all down if she could get to the source. We need to get her away from him.”
“We still have eyes on her, so we’ll make a note to look for another opening.”
“Good, keep me in loop.”
♥♥♥♥♥
As you began to regain consciousness you felt the softness of the sheets around you, instinctively cuddling them and pulling them close. You opened your eyes for a moment and then they went wide when you realized where you were. This was your bedroom, meaning you were back home. The smell of breakfast began to fill your nose and you sat up. Before you made an attempt to get out of bed the door opened, Hyungwon walking in with a tray.
“Good morning.”
“… morning…”
“Did you sleep well? You looked so peaceful when I got out of bed.”
“Yeah… I slept well…”
“Good. I made breakfast, your favorite.”
Hyungwon set the tray down before you, grabbing the utensils and offering you a bite. You were a bit hesitant, but you were hungry, so you ate. Of course everything tasted amazing, Hyungwon was an excellent chef with some cheats up his sleeve. He always enjoyed cooking for you, or with you, so this was certainly a lovely morning. After eating he let you go back to sleep, saying you were overdue for some proper rest. You did sleep some more, but after another little nap you got up. You hopped into the shower, enjoying yourself until you placed your hand behind your neck. You felt that bump again, being reminded that you were chipped.
There was probably no way for you to get it out on your own, so you’d just have to deal with it for now. Once you were all cleaned up you carefully stepped out of your room, wondering where Hyungwon was. To your surprise he wasn’t in the home office, Chae wasn’t even around either. The house was rather quiet, but when you made your way to the living room you found Hyungwon browsing your streaming service. He was looking through the most recent movie releases when he noticed you standing in the entryway. He immediately smiled and came over to you, bringing you to the couch.
“I heard you in the shower, so I figured we could make lunch and then unwind with some TV. There are a bunch of movies we haven’t gotten to see yet.”
“You’re not… you’re not working…?”
“It’s just us today, and tomorrow, and the day after that and the day after that. Whatever you want to do.”
“Does that mean you-”
“Sh, let’s not talk about anything else. Now, what do you want to make? We could make some of your favorites, we have all the ingredients.”
“I… I’d like that…”
“Come on then.”
Hyungwon held his hand out to you, and the two of you went to the kitchen. It felt like before, just enjoying each other’s company and being together. He’d guide you while you cooked, adding in ingredients and letting you take charge. As you were nearly done with the food you picked a movie. You both sat together to watch, enjoying the comedy film you had chosen. Afterwards Hyungwon cleaned up the plates, letting the food settle down for you. While he cleaned the two of you chatted about what you had just seen, and the best parts. For the time being it was so easy to forget what was going on with the rest of the world.
“It’s getting late, so I should give you your medicine now.”
“Medicine? What medicine?”
When Hyungwon came over with a small case you nervously backed up, but he assured you everything was alright. He sat down next to you and opened up the case. You didn’t recognize the blue liquid in the vial, or this mention of medicine at all.
“What… what is that…?”
“Just a little something I prepared for you.”
“That’s not medicine… is it…?”
“Clever girl.” Hyungwon kissed your head. “I want to make sure I can keep you safe, so I created these nanobots special for you. I injected you with some after I placed the chip, but more are needed.”
“Nanobots?”
“It’s safe, darling. You know I want what’s best for you.”
He gently took your arm once he filled the needle. You felt the pinch from when it broke skin and watched the blue liquid disappear into your body. You probably should have reacted differently, to resist and question, but there had been a subtle fog in the back of your mind all day. You wanted things to just remain this way, but you couldn’t, not entirely.
“Why nanobots though…”
“Hm… I don’t want to lose you… that is my greatest fear, and I won’t let it come to pass.”
“I’m flesh and bones, Hyungwon, whereas you’re a machine. You’ll certainly outlive me.”
“That’s a problem for later.”
Hyungwon watched you fondly for a moment before placing a kiss on your cheek and excusing himself. You watched him go, wondering how long you could stay like this. Although the answer came sooner than you expected. Suddenly you felt this pain at the back of your neck, and you noticed Hyungwon collapse to the floor. Everything in the house suddenly glitched out, and you realized what had happened.
“Hyungwon…!”
It had never occurred to you until now what could possibly happen if Hyungwon was hit with an EMP. He was an android afterall, and NexGen models only had such a small resistance. This isn’t how you thought things would end. You tried to get to him, but you were also in distress. Next thing you knew your front door was busted down and a bunch of masked individuals stormed inside. Two came over to you and grabbed you, dragging you out of the house. Although all you cared about was Hyungwon. Some of the other intruders had gone to him, and they certainly weren’t kind. He was already down, yet they felt the need to beat him.
“No…! No, don’t hurt him! Stop it! Please! Stop!”
Your cries were left unanswered, and then a bag was placed over your head, cutting your world to black. You knew you were placed in some sort of vehicle, and that’s when you did your best to cease your cries. You had no idea what was going on, but you were scared. You drove around for a while before coming to a stop and being taken out of the vehicle. Wherever you were, it was cold, but you could hear voices around you. Eventually you came to a stop and the bag was removed. You needed a moment to adjust to the light, then you were met with a familiar face, one you didn’t think you’d see again.
“Changkyun?”
“Long time no see.”

Prisoner to Temptation | Chapter One
Tumblr media
Fandoms: Monsta X
Genre: Royal AU, Romance, 19th Century period piece
Pairing: Hyungwon x OC
Chapter Word Count: 9.4k
Tropes: Arranged marriage, strangers to spouses to lovers
The Vibe: Lonely prince meets reluctant princess, the typical royal intrigue, period-appropriate writing style, beautiful costumes and lavish historical settings, friends with benefits-adjacent (though it’s more like royals with obligations), slow burn but also loads and loads of smut (like, I mean it, a lot lol) of every kind in between because arranged marriage, jealousy, angst, misunderstandings, confused feelings, falling in love with your husband, HAPPY ENDING BECAUSE FAIRYTALE DAMNIT
Synopsis: Naran has never fit the mold of a princess. She’s brash, disinterested, and nomadic at heart. It is only unlucky circumstance that has cast her as the sole hope of the Moghulikhan empire. With no brothers to secure the realm’s lineage, shaky borders ringing them from all sides, and a sister too young to understand any of that, peace only seems possible through an alliance, but that hasn’t stopped Naran from scheming up a way out. That is, until a handsome prince charming makes her an offer she simply can’t ignore.
A/N: First things first, happy birthday to my beloved Hyungwon. He’s too special and good for this world. He’s a living muse, and watching him work constantly inspires me (in ways it definitely shouldn’t lol).
Anyway, I just cobbled this AU together out of lots of bits and bobs because I can. Really went for a style of writing and dialogue that you might find in your Jane Austens or Emily Brontës, so this may or may not be for you.
Let’s set it somewhere in the early 1800s though I took a lot of liberties with bygone kingdoms (all real at one point or another, though that doesn’t mean this is historically or geographically accurate—I’m just fucking around). In this universe, western and eastern cultures mingle freely. You’ll get the drift. I mean, I’m here for the romance, but I’m also a slut for worldbuilding. Please join me, your resident lost cause, on this time-traveling, bodice-ripping adventure.

Naran felt her head drooping with every second that passed with the Viscount LaCroix. At least she’d been trained well enough to blame it on the stuffiness of the hall or the port she’d just downed, but it was becoming clearer by the second that she needed an escape or she was liable to outright fall asleep standing up, and the last thing she needed was to fall into the red-cheeked buffoon’s arms and have him convinced he’d found his fourth wife.
Desperate, Naran scoped out the ballroom looking for a friend to save her, but servants weren’t allowed in except the wait staff and neither were commoners. Even her sister was too young to attend this meat market, for that was what this was—an excuse to haggle wares, only the wares were noble sons and daughters.
At last, her eyes fell on her mother, who was already scowling at her. That scowl only deepened as Naran turned to the old man next to her and bowed lightly.
“Excuse me, your grace, I see my mother is calling for me. Thank you for the… discourse.”
She should have added “delightful" or some other outwardly false adjective in front of the last word, but Naran wasn’t in the mood to play ballroom politics—not that she ever was.
On the way across the room, she snatched another wine from a waiter and downed it, wishing it was kumis instead. She found her mother, Queen Jigme, crouching like a snow leopard in the corner, cunning eyes always vigilant for prey, only now they were narrowed on a very different obstacle.
Though the princess was taller and slighter, more often than not, she was bent from boredom (a trait her father always said made her more grassland reed than girl), and the queen could loom over her with just a few words.
"That was very rude to leave the Viscount hanging like that, child of mine,” the silver-haired woman scolded from behind her own wine glass.
“Wouldn’t it have been ruder to die of tedium in his presence?” Naran challenged without bothering to keep her own voice down. There was no one else in this corner of the ballroom anyway.
"You know, I knew you were going to be the trial of my life when I almost didn’t survive your labor, and here you are, nearly bringing me to my death again. Your grandfather threw this ball in your honor, I’ll remind you.”
Naran rolled her eyes. “Like I could forget. I only heard it every time the carriage hit a pothole the entire fortnight it took to get here.”
“Yes, well, it took many other guests here just as long or longer to arrive, so I won’t hear any more of your complaining.”
“Mother, it’s not like they came here for me. Deda may have told you this ball was for my benefit, but that’s certainly not what he told all these poor royals.”
Her mother pursed her lips, the wrinkles from the many years of sparring with her daughter etched into her face. “It may not have been on the invitations, but none of these people are fools.”
Naran rolled her eyes again toward the Viscount, and her mother smiled before her well-weathered purse returned.
“Very well, most of them aren’t,” the older woman continued. “They have traveled from all across the continent with the express purpose of sizing up rival empires and aligning themselves with ones that are worthy or tactically advantageous. We are here to do the same, Narangerel. Why do you think I married your father, hm? If it weren’t for your grandfather’s meticulous planning, you wouldn’t be here. No one senses an alliance like he does.”
Dread prickled up Naran’s spine the same way sweat did. “Please tell me not the Viscount…”
“Of course not. The First Princess of Moghulikhan should set her sights on someone of far greater importance than a middling pseudo-royal from Limoges.”
“Mother, we’ve been over this—”
“And we’ll go over it as many times as we need to until you understand your role in protecting our kingdom. We are cunning and strategic, Naran. We are survivors. This is how Moghulikhan has endured for centuries.”
“Off the backs of saleable daughters.”
Queen Jigme glared at her. “You are very tiresome, young lady, but do not think you can break my will with tacky jokes and passive aggression. I know what you’re doing because I’ve done it all myself.”
Her mother meant it as a warning, but it came across as one of an entirely different kind.
If her mother was once as free-spirited as Naran fancied herself, then there was no outrunning her fate. She would marry, and she would do it for country, not for herself.
“I’m here, aren’t I?” grumbled Naran.
“In body, maybe. The spirit must be coaxed,” the queen volleyed back.
Or broken, Naran thought bitterly as she took another long draft of wine.
The women stood side-by-side for a while, appraising the room. There were lots of marriageable prospects among the crowd—the princess’s grandfather had seen to it—but most were decades too old or so feeble that they spent most of the night observing their options from their chairs. On the other hand, there were some so young that Naran suspected their governesses or caretakers were lurking just outside the hall.
Her future was dimming by the second.
“Come now,” added her mother, “it’s not so bad as all that. I did let you wear your deel instead of a Western dress, a decision I am regretting now that I see you’re the only one in a costume of your homeland.”
“Shouldn’t that please you? I stand out.”
“Yes, though I think it remarks more on your stubbornness than anything else. Even those from Goryeo went Western traditional.”
Naran sighed.
“What about Prince Hyungwon?” Queen Jigme continued with a sly voice that betrayed her.
The princess narrowed her eyes at her mother. “What about him?”
“No matter which way you look at it, he's a better prospect for you than anybody here.”
Against her will, Naran’s eyes slid across the lavishly appointed ballroom to the tall, thin man with long charcoal hair, a beardless face, and an inscrutable expression. There was an air in his posture that made him look richer than anyone else in the room, though part of that no doubt came with the fact that his empire was certainly one of the largest. In reality, though, it was down to the way he wore his suit—jacket unbuttoned, dress shirt open two buttons too deep just the same as his cuffs, and cravat unspooled like he was heading to bed at any moment. None of these other stuffed-shirts would dare to look so relaxed.
Not that she was paying attention of course…
“What on earth would possess you to say that?” the princess snapped to her mother as she polished off her port.
“He’s certainly the handsomest man out there,” observed the queen.
“Oh, and he knows it.”
Again, since Naran definitely hadn’t been watching him all night, she hadn’t picked up on the way the prince chatted with every pretty girl in his vicinity... And she definitely hadn't studied the way his face collapsed into perfect apathy the moment he was ready to move on to more fertile grounds, leaving a string of bereft royals in his wake.
“To say nothing of the fact that his kingdom abuts ours,” the queen continued. “We’re already neighbors.”
“Oh, so he’s obligated to choose Moghulikhan just because we share part of a border? Our lands may be vast, Mother, but half of them are empty desert. We’re not resource-rich like Chalukya or Lotharingia nor do we have the breadth of their armies. Why on earth would Prince Hyungwon ever marry me over Princess Bhataki or Princess Flavia when their empires are twice as wealthy and neither of them openly balks at Court obligations? He won't have to settle for anything less than exactly what he wants. It's not like he has a clock ticking.”
“Sometimes I wonder about you,” Jigme said with a gentle shake of her head. “Clearly, I’ve indulged you far too much. You know nothing of politics, Narangerel. Prince Hyungwon may be a man, but he's also the last of his line. With no other heirs, he will need to provide some for his throne lest he throw his realm into chaos.”
“That may be, but unlike us,” the princess objected, “he can have children at any age.”
“My darling child, a throne may sit on solid ground, but it can be overturned at any moment. With no other heirs behind him, his family line is less and less secure every day. The Chae lineage may be storied, but people will talk. They already are talking. The longer Goryeo hesitates on forging a match, the closer things march toward open season on its reign. Nothing is secure in this life, dear, least of all power.”
“So, what? The prince is here tonight to find a bride?”
“Well, he certainly didn’t travel twice as far as we did for just for caviar.”
Naran glared at her mother, but as annoyed as she was, she couldn’t keep her eyes on her now that her interest had been reluctantly piqued. It had nothing to do with the prince’s looks, of course, but intrigue was intrigue, she told herself. It was only natural.
Prince Hyungwon did not look back. He was too busy feigning attention to the Countess de Bourgh, who was prattling on about her new summer villa, no doubt, as she had to any poor fool who had crossed her path that night. But when Naran could convince her eyes to finally stray from his button mushroom nose and jutting, plump upper lip, she found someone else who seemed to have just as much interest in the young prince’s company as she did.
Seated at the most prominent table in the center of the room was the Emperor of Goryeo himself, the prince’s father, Emperor Gongmin. He was a much smaller man than his son, with a round, flat face and perceptive eyes. It was clear the prince favored his mother’s elegant looks as well as her attention span, as she was lost in her wine glass while the Empress of Wu yammered on beside her.
Queen Jigme smiled and said shrewdly, “You see now, don't you?”
Naran shrugged a shoulder. “They seem like they're having a nice time.”
“Perhaps the empress is enjoying herself, but you know the emperor hasn't eaten so much of a grain of rice tonight. He has eyes on everything.”
“Very well, Mother, I will play your silly games. On whom does the emperor have eyes?”
“I would say there are two frontrunners. The Princess of Champa and the Princess of Dai Viet. Princess Binh is plenty young enough to bear many heirs and from to an exotic kingdom without an heir apparent while Princess Tham is newly widowed, still young, and has only borne two daughters. The Fates would say she is due for a boy. And I have heard the Dai Viet palace is covered in gold while their mountains are said to be filled with precious stones. It would be a good alliance to make.”
“I suppose either one would make a suitable match if it weren't for one problem,” Naran said with an eyebrow raised.
“Oh, and what is that?”
“The prince isn’t interested in either one of them.”
The queen hummed. “What makes you say that, my sun?”
“Princess Binh is far too talkative and he cares little for conversation, and Princess Tham flatters him far too much. It makes him uncomfortable.”
The corner of the queen’s mouth twitched. “Does it now?”
“Not that I've been watching,” Naran added. “It’s just what I’ve heard other guests saying over their wine goblets.”
“Hm. Well, in the end, we both know that doesn't matter, does it, my child? The prince will marry whomever the emperor tells him to marry.”
“I suppose you're right about that, as you’ve been right about nearly everything tonight.”
Queen Jigme nodded, an odd light illuminating the dark wells of her eyes. “How pleased I am to hear you say that because I should like to return to the discussion about the third and best option for the prince’s marriage.”
There was a long pause as understanding simmered between mother and daughter, and slowly, a red aura crept above the collar of Naran’s deel.
“Mother, you cannot be serious!” she snapped, loud enough that a few other nearby royals glanced their way.
The queen hushed her daughter with a pinch to her side and a heavy sneer. Despite the Court decorum her mother otherwise fought to uphold, she gripped both of the princess’s arms and squared her daughter to face her. Jigme’s voice was low but firm as she said, “Naran, this is our one chance at protection from Goryeo’s might. Especially with your father still ill, we are doomed without this union.”
The princess tried to shake the older woman’s grip, but it was relentless. Though she tried to sound cavalier, Naran’s voice wavered as she said, “You’re being dramatic again, Mother.”
“Hardly. Goryeo has been overthrowing kingdom after kingdom. Perhaps you’re too young to remember Ladakh, but no doubt you learned about it in your schooling.”
“I did.”
“So you know what happened to them, to my people,” said the queen. Her voice was clipped and her eyes were tight. “Goryeo took them over in a week. A week, Naran. And they were Moghulikhan’s direct neighbor, the only kingdom left between Goryeo’s might and ours. Now that our lands share a border, I’m sure it won’t be long before that irks Emperor Gongmin. Moghulikhan might be large, but as you pointed out, we don’t have the population Goryeo does. It’s been but thirty years since that takeover, and no doubt the Emperor's hunger for power and country has only amplified.
“Still, he’s a tactician at heart. He knows our army might not be as large as his, but we are fierce and brutal, and our kingdom is like four in one. It would be devastating to the unfamiliar army once they hit, say, the Gobi. But that need never come to pass if our kingdoms unite peacefully.”
The princess rolled her whole head with her eyes. “And I’m supposed to fix that how?”
“Don’t be obtuse, Narangerel. You were raised in a court. You know that alliances are the only way to secure one’s self and one’s vassals, and there’s no alliance stronger than a blood alliance. If Prince Hyungwon selects you as his princess before other arrangements are made, then there’s nothing to worry about any longer. No one would dare trifle with our kingdom with the strength of Goryeo behind us.”
“You’ve just described the worst kind of bully. Why on earth would I want to marry someone like that for all the good looks in the realms? Do you know your daughter at all?”
Jigme rubbed the princess’s arms before she squeezed Naran’s hands. “Indeed, I do, my love. You think I would propose Saran to such a family? Your sister could never conquer them. She’s too sweet and gentle. She’d be swallowed up. But you, my sun, my strength… You have the wit and the courage and the cleverness to make men fear you.”
“So why don’t I just make them so afraid of me they leave us alone entirely?”
“And there’s the wit. Naran, you must learn to look beyond what your eyes can observe the way you trust Altantsetseg on the steppe. Let me be your eagle in this hunt, my love. I know the battlefields better than you do; I’ve lived my entire life on them. Emperor Gongmin may be a shrewd monarch, but Prince Hyungwon is malleable. He is his own man, a man who will one day be king. In the right hands, he will be merciful and kind. In the wrong ones, he will be a foolish puppet. What would you have, child?”
“I would have you talk sense,” Naran quipped. “Through a twist of fate, I may have been born into this world, but it is not my world, Mother. I could never be ‘the right hands.’ I care nothing for the games of idle men. I care only for an open sky and a wind-swept bluff.”
Jigme looked softly at her daughter. She brushed a stray tendril of mahogany hair behind the princess’s ear and said, “Be that as it may, the choice is not yours to make. You will make your way to the prince, and you will introduce yourself with a smile. Once he sees that, everything will fall into place, I’m sure of it. You are very beautiful tonight, my daughter, as always, and never more so when you offer up one of those rare smiles.”
“And what happens when he ignores me as he has every other woman tonight? What of all your schemes?”
The older woman quirked one of her silver brows. “That is an outcome I cannot accept. I am confident I have read the omens right.”
“Mother—”
“Shall I make the introduction?”
“Don’t bother. It will be over before you finish it. Let me embarrass myself alone.”
It went against tradition, but the queen knew better than to argue when she’d already won. “Go now, Naran. The prince is waiting for you.”
With that, Queen Jigme plucked the wine glass from her daughter’s hand and folded back into the ring of elder monarchs surveying the hall from stations along murals of bygone conquests. Even in the perfect silence of the vast grasslands, Naran had never felt so alone.
She was stunned to the point of paralysis. There it was, her future laid out with horrifying clarity. She was expected to pair up and breed like a mare only with far less freedom. It didn’t matter if the stud they’d chosen for her was significantly younger and more agreeable-looking than the rest of the stable—the fences were closing in all around her until, slowly but surely, she would be broken.
From his vantage point across the room at one of the many white-clothed tables, Naran’s grandfather smiled at her as though it was all going according to plan. As if to underscore this, his eyes slid further down the dance floor to the corner, where Chae Hyungwon, Crown Prince of the Goryeo Empire, watched the ruby port inside his goblet twirl like a skirt.
Naran was trembling. She’d faced off with packs of wolves the same as packs of thieves and lived through them, and while the rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins was identical, the anxiety swelling her throat was something new, something she’d never felt before.
With a heavy breath, she shuffled inelegantly in her kitten heels across the ballroom floor and tried to call forth her eagle’s fearless spirit.
“Give me strength, Altantsetseg,” she whispered, and she swore she felt the beat of its wings in her gut.
The prince had his back to Naran, which was a thousand times more terrifying than if he’d seen her coming, for now she had to beg for his attention, and the princess hadn’t begged for a thing since she’d been a petulant runt at their chef’s knees, whining for treats after a day out in the grasslands. This was as far as she could get from such whimsies.
Though Naran was tall for a woman, taller even than many of the men here tonight, Hyungwon was a whole head taller than she. His jacket strained against shoulders so broad, they looked like they could rival her eagle’s wingspan, and again, she felt that unusual flutter inside her. The princess had to remind herself quickly that she was in charge of her fate, not her mother and not some handsome stranger who embodied everything she hated about Court.
Naran cleared her throat, but the prince did not turn. She had to get this over with quickly, like landing the mercy blow to wild game, and the simplicity and familiarity of the image spurred her tongue to action. She defaulted to English as she had all night, but if Prince Hyungwon didn’t speak it, all the better. Since she didn’t know a word of his language, she could be gone with a cordial bow and her duty would end.
“It appears I may be the only lady in this ballroom with whom you have not spoken tonight, my lord.”
Prince Hyungwon turned on his heel, and the air rushed out of her lungs. This close, he was arresting. Gone was the aloof gaze he had sported much of the night, replaced instead by keen eyes the color of roasted pine nuts that were just as warm and comforting. The baubles of his cheeks were high with a half-smile, and for a second, Naran thought she was the only person in the room with him.
“Are you jealous?” he said in perfect English and an unexpected flavor of cockiness, and that, more than anything, returned her senses to her.
“Hardly,” the princess retorted. “But others expect an interaction, so I’m obliged to give one for show.”
Hyungwon recoiled, genuine horror in his eyes. “I’m sorry, my lady. I fear the wine has loosened my lips. I meant no offense.”
“And I take none, sire. I am merely telling you that I am here as an emissary of my mother, Queen Consort of the Kingdom of Moghulikhan. She bade me greet you on behalf of our country. I am Princess Narangerel.”
Naran bowed, which Hyungwon echoed with one of his own, and when he came back up, his ears were pink and his grin was sheepish.
“It seems I have not made as good of an impression on the princess as I have on the queen. Will you forgive me?”
“There’s nothing to forgive, my lord.”
Hyungwon cocked his head to the side as he studied her. “Really? Because it seems like you’re already looking for a way out of this conversation.”
“Don’t take it personally. I look for a way out of most conversations.”
“Perhaps I should though,” he persisted. “You conversed with the Viscount LaCroix for quite a while.”
Naran’s jaw dropped. He’d noticed that?
“It wasn’t for lack of trying, my lord, I assure you.”
Hyungwon smirked. “Very well then. I am satisfied.”
“I’m so pleased,” she deadpanned before she could stop herself. Thankfully, instead of affronted, the prince looked surprised with the vaguest hint of amusement. As far as torture went, things could have been much worse.
And then they were.
Out of the corner of her eye, Naran caught her mother, who only ever had clear vision when it came to her daughters and what they weren’t doing, edging discreetly closer. Panic set in. If the queen overheard any of this absurd and impolite conversation, she would be mortified and the princess would probably be permanently chaperoned. Who knew what untold horrors would be foisted on her? A shiver ran through Naran at the thought of all the potential obligations she couldn’t escape, and before the bile could rise in her throat, she doubled down on the lesser of two evils.
“Just go along with this, my lord, and everything will be over faster, yes?” she whispered to a very confused prince before she proclaimed much louder, “How handsome His Highness looks this evening! And how well you converse! I’ve never seen such happy manners on a prince before.”
Hyungwon blinked. “What on earth are you—”
Still louder, Naran said, “Your kingdom is very lucky to have such a genial lord at its helm. I see your long travels haven’t fatigued you at all. I trust the palace is to your liking?”
The prince was stunned into silence for a moment before those full lips tightened. “Listen, my lady, I’m not in the mood for—”
“Oh, shut up, and just agree with anything I said, so we can move on,” she hissed.
“Wait, you don’t want to be here?”
“Of course not. And neither do you. Thanks to that scowl, I could tell that from across the ballroom.”
“I thought this sort of thing is what all maidens wanted?”
“‘Maidens,’ huh? Please. To be paraded like ponies at auction in hopes of a high bid? I think not. And what of the other twenty maidens who go home with disappointed hopes of proving valuable to families that only care for their male heirs? We maidens must sit in our rooms wondering what we did wrong and how we could have done better because if we’re not bearing heirs, then we’re just a waste of resources, aren’t we? So tell me again how odious this party is for you—and how elegant your suit looks, my prince! Did you have it custom-tailored or is it a family heirloom?” Naran’s voice switched into a strained soprano as she caught her mother leaning in closer.
Hyungwon stared at the princess in utter confusion, and exasperation was setting in. As low and as sharply as she could manage, she grumbled, "Say something, please."
His eyes flicked to Queen Jigme only to find his father now beside the gray-haired woman, and, at last, he nodded. “Ah, um, yes, it was tailored just for tonight. I’m glad it is to your liking, my lady.”
“Oh, thank God,” the princess mumbled. If she could have wiped her brow, she would have.
“Would you like to dance, Princess Narangerel?”
What! No, no, no!
Her heart was in her throat and her eyes zipped back and forth for a way out though there was none. Hyungwon’s offer had been overheard by the ears that mattered most, and there was no way to refute him without the greatest offense.
“I guess I have to say yes now,” she answered quietly enough that the prince could hear her and her mother could not.
Hyungwon blinked his big brown eyes before he narrowed them. “Did I misunderstand something? That wasn’t what you wanted?”
“No! Now they’ll think you have some sort of interest in me. You haven’t asked anyone else to dance all night. You must fix this, sire.”
“And how am I to do that?”
Naran growled. “Have you never been to a ball before? And my mother thinks I’m clueless! Obviously, you’ll have to ask a few other ladies to dance to throw them off the scent or we’ll be associated with one another from here on out. Is that what you want?”
“I don’t know what’s going on,” Hyungwon admitted, the pinkness back on his ears. “You have me completely bewildered, my lady. All I wanted was to retire to my room for the night.”
“Well, now you can’t. We must dance and you must then dance with others. There’s no getting around it. How can you know so little of Court when you are prince of one of the realms’ greatest empires? Honestly, who raised you?”
Gone were any pretenses for civility, and Naran knew she had overstepped about a hundred rules of polite society, but she was feeling anything but polite.
Unlike her carelessness, the prince raised his glass to his lips, took a long drink, and said coolly, “You’re awfully brash for a woman.”
“And you’re precisely as thick for a man. Now, walk me to the dance floor so we can get this over with.”
The prince offered his hand, and Naran took it because she had no choice. Even so, she jolted at the feel of his hot skin under hers. His hands were smooth and babied and perhaps had never seen a day’s labor, where hers were rough and calloused from handling a bow and knives. She wished she’d worn gloves as her mother had urged.
Together, they waited at the edge of the dance floor alongside a dozen other couples, some married, some courting, but all staring at the unlikely pair. Naran held her head high and straight and tried not to collapse under the weight of so much perception. Neither said a word to the other as they waited awkwardly, hand-in-hand for want of any other option, while the previous dance concluded. The moment it did, Prince Hyungwon gestured for her to take to the floor, and they parted, her hand throbbing as she buried it in the folds of her skirt to dry it off.
Naran didn’t dare look back to her mother, especially knowing the Emperor of Goryeo waited right by her side. She focused, instead, on the billowing folds of the prince’s shirt and the flashes of his glossy chest that peeked through when the tie at his collar pulled taut.
As the orchestra reset for the next dance, the room fell silent save for a babble of whispers as rhythmic as the wind through the reeds. Her grandfather’s ballroom was large and magnificent, yet Naran felt the walls closing in around her, especially when she spied the old man’s sun-beaten, smiling face leaving the conductor’s side.
At last, the music swelled, and much to her horror, she recognized it as a waltz. Naran wasn’t good at the waltz. It had come over from the West, and she had only practiced it a few times before tonight at her grandfather’s behest in the hopes she might impress a Western lord. She didn’t expect it to be familiar to Prince Hyungwon either, but if he was uncomfortable, he masked it well.
She took the first steps toward her partner as he met her half-way. His hand opened, and hers filled it again as required. They met and parted a few times to the gentle melody before joining more permanently side-by-side for the next few bars. Once she’d gotten the flow down well enough that she could keep her feet under her without constant coaxing, the princess’s painful awareness of her predicament returned to her.
“Curse him,” Naran whispered under her breath, but since the prince was at her side, he caught her words.
“Are you cursing me?”
“Soon enough, no doubt,” she said boldly, but he didn’t take her bait. As they split across from each other for a series of inelegant hops that Naran had to meticulously count in her head, she grumbled, “I’m going to embarrass you, sire. I’m not very good at this.”
“You’re lovely.”
“I feel like a fish tossed on land. This is nothing like our traditional dances.”
Hyungwon hummed as his hand lifted hers aloft for her to spin under it. “What are those like?”
“Lively,” she said. “Noisy. Fun. Elegance and restraint have no place in Moghul dances. It’s a celebration, not a funeral.”
“You're a very singular woman, Princess Narangerel.”
She scoffed. “And there's yet another falsehood. There are many women like me, but few who have the luxury having of such a mouth or a mind. If you think all women long to sit at home all day nursing babies and picking out garlands for the next gala, you are well and truly misinformed, my prince, just as not all men think of conquering every surrounding kingdom to increase the size of their manhoods.”
The prince’s hand squeezed a little tighter around her shoulder before they parted for a fresh orbit around one another. “That feels like a very thinly-veiled opinion of someone I might know.”
“I have no idea what you mean, my lord. My god, will this song ever end?”
Hyungwon laughed. “It just started.”
Why wasn’t her brazenness putting him off? This was torture.
Naran growled and kept her focus hard and fast to her feet, which were supposed to be light and fluttery, but that heavy sensation stayed rooted to her stomach. “Is everybody still watching us?”
“I’m afraid so. You can look at me, too, you know,” the prince informed with a smile evident in his voice.
“It’s not a good idea,” the princess insisted. “I don’t want people to get any more of the wrong impression.”
Their toes met and then their hands as they completed the next turn in the dance.
“Which is?”
“That you’re interested in me,” she answered. Naran risked a glance up at his face and instantly regretted it. “It would be helpful if you stopped smiling, sire.”
Another turn, another kiss of their fingertips.
“I can’t help it,” Hyungwon said. “You’re the first entertaining person all night.”
“How can I convince you otherwise?”
The prince’s smile only broadened, and as soon as she caught a glimpse of it, she had no hope of looking at anything else.
“You know, I do know who you are, Princess Narangerel. Your reputation as a spirit-crusher precedes you."
"Ah, is that what they say about me? How delightful. That should be warning enough for you then, yes?”
“No.”
Naran scowled. “Then would you like to know your reputation, my prince?”
“I doubt I’ll like it as much as you like yours.”
“Oh, very true, but since I’m a spirit-crusher, I'll tell you anyway. You, sire, don’t speak until spoken to unless it’s a pretty serving lass with an ample bosom.”
Hyungwon pressed his lips together as his brow knitted. “Is that really what they say?”
“Indeed. Do you disagree with it?”
“I probably should.”
Naran smiled despite her better judgment.
“At least there’s no shortage of bosom on display for you tonight,” she added.
“Unfortunately, it comes with expectations. The serving lasses have none.”
“You’re as frank as I am, my lord.”
Hyungwon looked down at the princess, and there was a fondness in his gaze that she really didn’t trust.
“What a pair we make,” he said softly.
But what Naran lacked in decorum, she made up for with a hunter’s perceptions. Before her, Hyungwon had played the part of a respectful suitor until the amusement of the moment wore off and his true indifferent colors shown through. Granted, he had taken it up to the next level with this dance, but there was no reason to expect any other outcome. At least she could cling to that.
Hyungwon lifted his hand, and again, Naran was obliged to twirl once beneath it. The skirt of her deel flared around her ankles, stirring a breeze up her legs.
“You dance very well, Princess.”
“Your usual company is serving lasses, so I'll take that compliment with a grain of salt.”
The prince laughed, and the sound was so buoyant, her chest leapt with it. And then resentment immediately crept back in.
“I’m glad one of us is enjoying ourselves tonight.”
“You couldn’t be more wrong, you know,” Hyungwon replied. “This party is just as much torture for me as it is for you. You don’t know what it’s like to support the weight of an entire kingdom on your shoulders.”
“Shows what His Highness knows. I have no brothers, hence no heirs. I’m Moghulikan’s only hope for stability. If I do not marry well, our line could be overthrown before my sister even comes of age to do what I can not.”
“Then, you are right. I am wrong. We are in the same boat.”
Naran narrowed her eyes at him. “I appreciate your concession, my prince, but perhaps it’s time we stop looking so familiar with one another.”
“Now, that will be difficult.”
Naran cocked her head. “Why is that?”
“Because this is the part where the tempo slows.”
Just then, the music dipped and the dance shifted from arm’s length fleeting touches to a fixed hold. They lined up, hip to hip, the princess facing one way and the prince facing the other. It would have been the best outcome were it not for Hyungwon’s hand curling across her stomach around her waist in a way that hers had to mirror on him, and as he tugged their sides flush, their free hands met overhead to lock them into a pirouette.
Together, they spun like tops across the floor as the final movement wound on for what felt like eternity. Around her, faces blurred, but one thing was clear—everyone in the hall was watching them.
“I’m going to be sick,” Naran confessed.
Hyungwon held her tighter as he assured, “It’s almost over. Just look into my eyes, Princess. It will steady you.”
It did and it didn’t.
Those dark orbs stared down at her, framed by the soft pillows of his lids as he smiled lightly, and it was more dizzying than the constant spinning.
At last, the music concluded to a polite round of applause from the assembly. The other couples had separated to bow to one another, but Hyungwon still held her waist. Naran wriggled her hand free to hold her temples and slow the spinning in her brain.
None of this should have happened. It was just supposed to be a rushed introduction to get her mother off her back and the prince out of the running for Savior of Moghulikhan, yet here Naran was, breathless and antsy and side-by-side with any other princess’s dream catch.
“What do you say to another dance, please, your grace?” asked Prince Hyungwon, his hand hanging mid-air in offer.
“Out of the question,” Naran hissed, her eyes darting to the shadowy faces gawking from the sidelines.
Undeterred, he said, “Would you rather take this discussion into the hall?”
Her stomach dropped. As suggestive as it was dancing two songs back-to-back with the same partner, sneaking away was outright confirmation of an understanding or worse, an illicit relationship, and there was no way Naran could risk that, just as she couldn’t risk abandoning him slack-jawed on the dance floor for the gossipmongers and her very angry mother.
“Fine, but it ends after this. I feel like I’m suffocating.” The princess tugged at the collar of her deel, but it may as well have been a noose tightening around her throat.
The music kicked up, and once again, Naran spotted her grandfather leaving the band’s station. Instead of a rather suggestive waltz, it was a smooth and patient minuet that left far too much time for conversation in between the languid notes.
“Damn it all to hell,” Naran whispered as they circled each other. “You’ll have to dance with at least four other ladies now.”
Her partner stared back at her with a perfectly blank face. “I have no intentions of doing so.”
“Really, Prince Hyungwon, why must you be so obstinate? If you do not, then everyone will presume an understanding has been made between us, which will obligate us to marry. Is that what you really want?”
The prince shrugged. “It’s less loathsome than the thought of marrying any of these other royals.”
Shock took a backseat to outrage as Naran’s eyes bolted to his blank stare. “No, no, no, no, no. Did you ever consider that I do not wish to marry?”
“Am I that repulsive of an option?” he asked, and Naran could hear a hint of hurt in his husky voice that made even her feel a little guilty.
“My prince, it’s not a matter of marrying you. Perhaps I do not wish to marry at all. There’s no glamor in that, contrary to what the fairytales promise. It’s tedious obligation after tedious obligation, and excepting weddings and births, you’re always bound to your stupid castle. If I do not become queen, then I am free to exist as I wish. I can sleep until midday or bathe under a waterfall or stargaze on the open plain if I so desire.”
“And what if I offer you that same freedom with this marriage?”
Naran laughed. “You’re serious? Why on earth would you ever wish for a wife who cares so little for court or you?”
“Maybe because I have no wish to marry either, but as the sole heir to Goryeo, I have no choice. If I don’t decide, things will be decided for me. At least with you, I know I’d have my own freedoms.”
“But I’d still be expected to bear your heirs, sire.”
The implication was inescapable, and they both stiffened in each other’s arms.
Hyungwon nibbled on his bottom lip before he finally nodded. "There’s no getting around that, I suppose.”
“There is not.”
“I take it you never had any desire for children?”
“On the contrary,” Naran replied, “I’d love them, which is why I would never wish for the responsibilities of this life to fall on them.”
Hyungwon hung his head, laden with his own understanding. “We could raise them differently. Just as our marriage would be unconventional and without expectations, we could choose to raise any children we had as such.”
“You surprise me, my prince, and, if I’m honest, it’s more than a little tempting all things considered, but I think we both know that would be impossible. We may be at the height of our realms, but we answer to everyone instead of no one.”
Thin as he was, the prince looked heavy again under the weight of his tremendous burden.
“If I may,” Naran continued as she dipped under his hand for another twirl, “why don’t you dance with Princess Ophelia? She’s a quiet sort of girl from a robust kingdom and would likely leave you your peace while acting like a true queen when the time comes. My mother also thinks Princess Binh might be a good match for you.”
“You’ve talked about me?” Hyungwon said rather hopefully, and Naran swallowed hard. His charms were too pervasive.
“My mother did,” she corrected. “And speaking of, I should get back to her…”
Naran broke her hand from his and started toward the now-aghast Queen Jigme when the prince grabbed her wrist and jerked her back to him. She landed with an oomph in his arms, the sticks pinning up her hair clattering somewhere behind her. Her face was lost in the folds of his shirt and the smell of intoxicating oils like yuja and clove beneath it. She wondered if he’d rubbed them on his own chest or if someone else had had the duty of anointing him.
Her heart hammered though her lungs caught as she hoped against hope that she would fade into him like a shadow until no one in the room noticed her at all. But it was for nothing. The music still played, but it became background noise beneath the murmur of royal bystanders.
Suddenly, Hyungwon’s cheek was in her hair, his mouth finding her ear through her unraveling black tresses.
“Princess Narangerel, my father intends to invade Moghulikhan. Marry me and we can prevent this.”
It was just as Queen Jigme feared, and Hyungwon knew it. Naran was faced now with turning her back on her family and her entire kingdom with full knowledge and selfishness or falling in league with a handsome prince who promised to give her the life she sought anyway. It was no doubt an empty promise, but even if it were, the threat was now real. Knowing what she knew, could she really turn him down?
“Damn you,” she whispered back, her nails digging in through the thin silk of his shirt.
“Is that a yes, princess?”
“Yes,” she seethed.
“Then I will go to my father at once and arrange everything. We shall make the announcement tonight.”
Hyungwon released her and stalked over to his father, ushering him out of the ballroom and leaving the princess red-faced and shaking in a sea of jealous and shocked gawkers. The room whirled, and her stomach lurched. Everything Naran had ever known had just been undone in the span of two songs.
Her mother was at her side in an instant, smoothing her hair and thumbing at the rosy bloom in her daughter’s cheeks.
“Oh, my sun, you’ve made the right decision! I knew you would!”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mother,” Naran insisted, hoping that her denial would alter reality.
“Did the prince not propose? Did you not say yes?”
“It was a dance. Just a dance.”
“A dance? When Prince Hyungwon has danced with no one but family in years? When his lips were in your hair? Surely, you jest, my child. No, this means everything. You have saved your homeland. Our people will adore you for it. Saran will adore you for it. When she comes of age, there won’t be a royal in all the realms who won’t seek to woo her. She will have her choice of kingdom thanks to your enviable match. It will silence at last the issue of heirs amongst our own people, for Goryeo’s backing will be incentive enough to dissuade usurpers until your sister can bear the next king.”
Naran’s throat was drier than the Gobi. She pinched her eyes shut against the onslaught of cold knowledge relentlessly bombarding her. “That’s just what I want—my little sister having to endure this nonsense.”
“She will not have to, darling! Suitors will come to her. She can marry for love or country.”
“She can have everything I cannot.”
Queen Jigme took her daughter’s face in hand and smiled warmly at her. “Who is to say that you cannot? Duty may bind you, but it doesn’t have to unmake you, dearest. There is something to your prince. When you’ve survived as long as I have in the world, you can see it. Only someone special like you, my Narangerel, can awaken it. Is Prince Hyungwon not handsome?”
Reluctantly, the princess nodded.
“Is he not charming?”
“When he wants to be.”
The queen’s voice dropped hard and low as her grip tightened. “Did he give you a reason to fear him?”
Naran pictured Hyungwon’s soft cinnamon eyes studying her as they twirled across the dance floor, and though her chest tightened at the memory, it wasn’t founded in the same kind of fear she felt when she squared off with a pack of wolves. The princess shook her head. “No, nothing like that.”
The queen let out a relieved sigh. “Good, because I would not part with you for all the alliances in the realms in trade for your safety. So, it is only your pride that holds you back?”
“Not pride, Mother. Freedom.”
“Do you respect the prince?”
“I hardly know him.”
Jigme glowered at her. “That has never stopped my daughter from making a snap judgment before.”
Naran didn’t want to say yes. That was the same thing as condoning the whole preposterous arrangement. And yet… It was hard to forget the gentleness in his cheeks and the calmness in his voice as he promised things she knew she shouldn’t dream of any longer.
“I suppose more than I do these other preening fools.”
“Then take heart, my sun. If there is respect, there can be love. You will want for nothing. There will be peace further than your eagle can soar. You have already done more for your kingdom than most rulers can ever hope to do.”
Strangely, Naran felt her heart in her throat. It was yet another promise that seemed impossible to deliver. “That presumes Emperor Gongmin will approve the match…”
Before her mother could even open her mouth to answer, Prince Hyungwon sped across the ballroom faster than she had imagined such a cavalier man ever moving. The entire party was watching as he bowed deeply to Queen Jigme before extending his hand to the princess.
Naran had no choice, she had to take it, and instead of simply holding her hand, he laced his fingers through hers so she had no way to pull away. His skin was hot and sweaty, but so was hers, and at least she could take comfort in the fact that he was as uncomfortable with this unbearable spotlight as she was.
“What’s going on?” she whispered. “Did your father not approve our arrangement?”
Even if the match had never been something she had wanted for herself, it would be even more humiliating to be turned down.
Worryingly, Hyungwon did not answer though he also did not stop pulling her to the head of the hall. There, beneath a fresco of a khan and his warrior bride surveying a battle from a mountain ledge, the prince stopped and tugged Naran close to his side. His hand tightened in hers, and it felt almost like he was using her to keep upright. She didn’t bother to balk because she needed the same.
Heavy footsteps approached from the side, and Naran lifted her eyes. Emperor Gongmin seemed to fill the room like a great balloon, puffing mightier and mightier with each passing second. All eyes had already turned to the front of the hall in anticipation of what the greatest ruler in the East had to say.
The emperor raised his glass to the party and grinned with a hollowness that Naran had yet to find in his son. His voice boomed across the room, even vibrating in the glassware on the tables. “First, I would like to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the mighty Toqu Khan for hosting us all at his beautiful palace this week. For many of us, this may be the only time we visit Kipchak, but it will remain forever in our hearts. It has been many long years since I have had the privilege of visiting, but I am happy to report this time has added a fondness for this charming land that I might never have anticipated, because it is thanks to the great Khan’s generosity that I can announce to all the realms that my son, Crown Prince Hyungwon of Goryeo, has finally found his future bride.”
A collective gasp filled the hall to its rafters, and Naran fought to hide her embarrassing tremble. As the spectators tightened ranks, she scanned the rainbow of faces to find her mother and grandfather watching with proud smiles. If they were happy, so too must she try to be. While she couldn’t bear to look at the man beside her, the princess worked hard to cobble some kind of smile together for them.
Emperor Gongmin continued, “Today, I am pleased to announce the joyful union of the Empire of Goryeo to the Kingdom of Moghulikhan. Henceforth, Princess Narangerel will move to Namgyeong to be with her new family, where the happy couple will marry before the whole empire. Please join me in wishing them all possible happiness.”
Applause thundered around them. For as many sycophants and saccharine grins as there were, there were just as many barely concealed scowls and glares, particularly a few other princesses Naran had spied talking up the prince earlier.
“To their many heirs!” shouted someone in the crowd, which was followed by cheers and more applause.
Her grandfather signaled for the band to kick back up as small glasses of clear liquor made their way suspiciously quickly through the ballroom, almost as though they’d been waiting for just such an announcement. The moment the tray appeared to her, Naran shook off Hyungwon’s hand to grab two glasses and down them with lightning speed before the burn of the alcohol could even sear her tongue. Beside her, her husband-to-be eyed her as he nursed his lone glass.
No sooner were the glasses emptied than the emperor had extended his hand to his future daughter-in-law. “Would you honor your new father with a dance, Princess?”
Without so much as the bliss of drunkenness, her body churned and her mind swam as Emperor Gongmin led Naran to the edge of the dance floor and dove right in mid-promenade. She could barely keep her feet under her as they waltzed through the line of raucous partygoers.
“What an enviable match you have made for yourself, Princess Naran,” the emperor observed as they ducked through a tunnel of hands.
“Yes, Your Highness,” she said tightly.
They emerged at the end of the tunnel only to add to it by joining their hands above them for the next dancers. Naran tried to keep her attention on the dance, but the beady eyes of the emperor were relentlessly demanding, and she knew in her bones she needed to rise to his challenge. She met his gaze head on, and the corner of his mouth quirked, pulling a crow’s foot at the edge of his cheek.
“I confess I have never seen my son so interested in his future,” Gongmin added, “which is why I approved the match without first meeting you. He appears genuinely pleased.”
“I am happy to hear so.”
They paired off again for a series of turns about the dance floor, which gave the emperor a chance to soften his voice further. “But I do not have the luxury of being so easy. My son has always been as prone to whimsy as he is to idleness, and this is all very sudden.”
Now, the alcohol was kicking in, mercifully giving Naran the strength she needed in the face of the Lord of the East. “Is that not how most matches are made, Your Highness?”
“Indeed they are, but I’m sure you can appreciate my desire to protect my empire.”
“Excuse my candor, sire, but I don’t believe anyone worries about the future of Goryeo.”
Emperor Gongmin’s hand squeezed hers unexpectedly tightly. “I do, Princess Narangerel, I do. So long as you commit to your new homeland and deliver the promised heirs, we will get along perfectly well. Now, I suggest you two revel in tonight’s festivities for as long as they’re offered. Goryeo always remembers to show its deep appreciation to its hosts, especially when they’re now family.”
The soon-to-be in-laws finished out the last few bars of the dance before they bowed to one another. As the emperor came up, he added with a softer, if disingenuous, smile, “You will make some very pretty children.”
With nothing else to say, Naran bowed again.
As Gongmin stepped aside for his son, he looked at the pair and said, “Enjoy your party, you two.”
Prince Hyungwon joined Naran’s side and offered her the next dance, but she shook her head. “I’m too dizzy. I mean it.”
“Would you like to sit down?”
“I would like to shoot you with an arrow,” she snapped though she took a chair along the wall and let her head rest against the tapestry there as she steadied her heart. “I hope you're happy.”
Hyungwon raised an eyebrow, “About the arrow? Not so much, but otherwise, I am, and so should you be.”
“You just blackmailed me into marriage. Happiness is the last thing from my mind.”
“You’re not the least bit glad to have settled on someone who will at least respect your independence, princess?”
Under the swell of the violin, Naran scoffed. “If you respected my independence, you would have left me to my plan of faking a deadly illness until my sister came of age. Then I could miraculously recover only to live my life as a spinster roaming the plains and hunting with my eagle.”
“You have a very elaborate imagination, my lady,” he said teasingly.
“It’s hardly imagination, my lord. I was set to contract dropsy this very evening.”
Hyungwon laughed. “You don’t contract dropsy; you develop it. Do not worry, the libraries in Changdeokgung are second to none, and they will all be at the princess’s disposal. You can pretend to contract all the illnesses you want when we arrive.”
Naran seethed. Thankfully, the folds of her dress concealed her fists.
“For all that’s just occurred, I am glad I met you, Princess,” said the prince as the orchestra wound down, and the tension left her hands at once. There was a tenderness in his voice that Naran almost let herself mistake as genuine affection, but either way, it made her breath catch. “This is the first time in my whole life I haven’t dreaded my future.”
He was being kind, and maybe it was even working were it not for the fact that it was the first time in Naran’s life that she did dread hers.
“I meant what I said,” Hyungwon continued. “I mean to give you every independence I can in our marriage. We don’t have to love each other so long as we respect each other, and if we can do that, maybe we can be something great for our people—and maybe even each other.”
The prince looked down at her, that beautiful smile showcasing brilliant teeth and lush lips. Naran longed to trust such beauty, but she knew those things were fleeting. Once the chandeliers had been snuffed, the silverware put away, and the spectators dispatched, only cold reality would encroach on them, and she wondered what kind of man her husband would truly be then.

Abandoned hotel which may or may not be haunted.

Romantic getaway in October.
💕“I love you and that’s the beginning and end of everything.” —F. Scott Fitzgerald💕
"I don't have a single romantic bone in my body! Me!? Not romantic! I will show her just how romantic I can be!" He fumes.
"They don't call me love killa for nothing!" He tells his handsome reflection as he sweeps his fingers through his hair.
Planning every detail with relish anticipation, "my friends say to just drop you like  a hot potato but hey they never liked you"  he murmurs to a photo on his phone.
Weeks of preparation the vacay all planned and plotted with exact precision.
"Not spontaneous! I will show her" as he diligently finesses the getaway.
Well she was utterly surprised by his gesture and planning. Hyungwon wonders if this is a compliment or insult? Her face showed disbelief when I handed her the printed itinerary. I knew she would be impressed  he smiles to himself.
Reaching the hotel, the lobby is deserted as the whole hotel.
Smiling like the Cheshire cat, "surprise!", jumping over the desk he grabs room keys to room 306. "Let's go, we are booked in".
The elevators are non operational carrying the bags walking up three flights of stairs.
The arduous effort of climbing the stairs breathlessly she enquiries "how much further?" Looking at her flushed face he ponders if he should have helped with her bags "this is great cardio workout" he grins.
Upon locating their room, the door is ajar, and as they enter, the room's welcome scent greets them, gasping for breath holding her hand over her face "what is the smell?"
Pulling the curtains to let in light, the beds are bare of bedding, flipping the light switch, nothing, the faucets just groan in misery nothing else.
"Hyungwon what the hell? There is no power or water, no phone  service or even bedding!" She groans.
"Perfect isn't it? We have  the whole place to ourselves!" He tells her with glee.
"And the best part is .." she cuts him off, "best part?!" "It's haunted!"
The look of utter astonishment on her face brings a resounding look of triumph to his face.
"I knew you would love it," he smiles.
Checking his printed agenda he smiles "we are on schedule".
"Time to tour the hotel, let's go".
"Creepy, eerie even don't you think? As she grabs his hand.
"The decor goes with the place" he states.
Investigating every nook and cranny seems like the guests a staff just left or disappeared.
Creaaaakkkk
"Thought you said we were alone?" "We are, well bar the incorporeal beings".
"What?"
"Ghosts, revenants, apparitions"
"Shit,!" She replies in a panicked tone.
"Let's head back to the room" he replies calmly.
Vanilla scented candles flicker, not only am I romantic I'm a boy scout he muses.
Singing romantic love songs while her head rests on his chest. During a particularly soft song, the door knob rattled, "oh god someone is trying to get in". She whispers in fright.
Scratching at the door is followed  by someone  or something kicking the door.
"Stay here!" He whispers
"No, don't go!"
Hyungwon opens the door with force looking  left  then right .
"No one there must be animals" as he closes the door.
Hopping on the bed "how about a kiss for your hero" he grins.
For the night's duration the door knob rattled, sounds of doors opening and closing creaked through the empty resort. Malicious laughter resounded within, throughout the ordeal her hero kept her safely wrapped in   his arms.
Once they are safely back in the vehicle Hyungwon smiles " next time a haunted prison or ten pin bowling?"
"Bowling" is her very swift reply.
Coffee with the guys Hyungwon smiles "I owe you guys it worked like a charm!". Looking at each other Shownu says "we didn't make it! We got lost!"
"What?" Hyungwon asks
"We didn't get to the hotel," Minhyuk states.

Hyungwon isn’t sure he can keep his secret hidden for much longer
Tumblr media
“There is a monster inside and it won’t let me leave you alone”
You look at Hyungwon with wide eyes, the spoon full of ice cream frozen halfway to your mouth. He did not just say that...what the fuck? From your place on the bed, you slowly set the spoon back in the pint of ice cream and sit up, crossing your legs underneath the other.
“Um, Hyungwon...what?”
Hyungwon blinks at the woman sitting on his bed while he sits in the chair by his desk. He blinks slowly, the world around him seeping into his conscience and his mind races to catch up. He said that out loud, didn’t he?
“What?” Hyungwon parrots what his friend of four years questioned, and the air suddenly thickens with a heavy metallic scent. Hyungwon’s nose twitches you jump to your feet, muttering some excuse to run to the bathroom. The door slams shut loudly and Hyungwon inhales deeply, he knows that scent. It’s blood. Hyungwon’s throat starts to burn, and he hisses lowly.
Those dark brown eyes, turn a bright crimson and Hyungwon cruses when he catches his reflection in the mirror on the wall. He closes his eyes and breathes deeply in through his mouth and out through his nose. He needs to claim down, it’s just a period. There is no need for him to lose control. It’s not like Hyungwon hasn’t been around you while you were pmsing but it is the first time that Hyungwon is around for the first day or maybe he should consider it the first night.
Fuck.
Hyungwon can hear the footsteps coming back towards the room and he bites his lower lip, quickly cursing when his fangs break the skin. A perfect drop of blood, pearls to the surface and Hyungwon groans as he sucks on his lip.
“You okay in here?”
Your voice startles Hyungwon, for a moment he let himself indulge in the twisted part of who he really is. No longer feelings that rug like burn in his throat, Hyungwon opens his eyes and licks his lips.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?”
He can smell the blood as it sits behind your cheeks, hot from embarrassment. Hyungwon clears his throat and watches as you sit back on the bed, the ice cream forgotten on the nightstand.
“If I didn’t know any better, I would say you planed this little sleepover around my period.”
Hyungwon laughs with a shake of his head, “I’m not that attuned to your needs, my dear.”
You smile at Hyungwon’s laugh, knowing that’s a lie and tucks a runaway curl back underneath your bonnet. “No?” You quirk an eyebrow and stand from the bed. Hyungwon watches you, each step you take brings you closer and closer until you’re sitting prettily in Hyungwon’s lap. Your legs hang over the side of his thighs and your chest is pressed against his own.
Hyungwon wraps his arms around your waist and lets the warmth of your skin melt away the chill that lingers in his veins. “What are you doing, darling?”
“Can’t a girl sit in her friends lap and cuddle?” You trail your fingers up the length of Hyungwon’s chest and clasp them around the collar of his shirt. “You look worried.”
Hyungwon’s fingers dig into your hip, and he licks his lips, “Seems you’re in a playful mood tonight...is that wise in your current situation?”
There is a dark twinkle in your eyes as you stare Hyungwon down. Leaning in, the warmth of your breath heats Hyungwon’s skin and your lips brush his lightly.
“I’ve always liked playing with the monsters under my bed.”
Before Hyungwon can stop himself, his lips are on yours. The kiss is wild and mess, spit and tongues mixing. It’s a misstep on his part as he tries to pull away and accidently bites your bottom lip. You whine at the sudden pain but don’t pull away. The scent is madding, the taste...Hyungwon groans and he licks at your lip, sucking the blood away hungerly.
You moan and slides your hands around Hyungwon’s neck, pulling him in closer, tighter as you shiver. The slide of his fangs under your tongue is like playing with fire. Beautiful and dangerous. It feels like you’re swimming amounts sharks...terrifying and freeing. Hyungwon pulls away slowly once the cut on your lip heals. His eyes, ruddy and fierce make you smile as you cup his cheek.
Hyungwon’s words won’t come out, if he were still alive, he would surely be struggling to breath. You peck his lips once, twice, three times before nuzzling your nose against his own.
“How did you know?” Hyungwon whispers and you giggle surprised he hasn’t figured it out. Hyungwon tightens his hold on your hips and repeats his question.
“Your scent...all vampires smell like sage mixed with something.”
“M-my scent?” Hyungwon raises an eyebrow. “Aren’t you human?”
You can’t help but laugh, a human? Adorable. Before Hyungwon can speak again, a gentle woosh catches his attention. Looking to the right, Hyungwon’s eyes take in the blue and yellow silky wings before him.
“A fairy?” Hyungwon laughs. “I should have known.”

[Mentions briefly: Minhyuk]
[A/n: @jinkoh and I couldn’t stop thinking of mafia boss! Hyungwon. And I absolutely had to write our thoughts into a fuller story. So please enjoy our brainrot~ And Kebbi, I hope this fulfills your brainrot as it did mine~ Lastly: thank you for checking over this, Kebbi! I appreciate it sm 🥺💖]
------
Like every other Wednesday since you started dating Hyungwon, you’re heading to meet him at the cafe where you had your first date. And now you both meet up there before walking around a bit before heading to one of your homes and watching movies together. You get outside the cafe entrance to see him walking out with your two coffees in his hands. He smiles as he hands you yours, “I got you your favorite~” You grin and thank him before sipping on it. He wraps his arm around your shoulder, “So, how’s my baby been?” You smile, “I’ve been okay.” He pouts, “Just okay?” You sigh, “Do you remember that debut I told you about before?” “Of course I do. What about it?” “They’ve raised my rate by another twenty, and I was going to use that extra money to buy some records. And you’d think I’d already have paid it off by now, but the interest rates have been so high.” He lets out an “Oh,” and you look over at him, and he says, “I’ve dealt with horrible lenders before. It’s hard to hear you going through the same thing.” You shrug, “I suppose it’s okay, it’s just twenty bucks. Maybe by my next bill, I’ll have it paid off!” He smiles and clicks your coffee cups together, “Heck yeah!”
You smile, “So, how has your business been going?” He hums, “We have more money coming in now, and that’s nice.” You agree, and he leads you to a park bench, “Why do we always seem to end up at this bench?” He gives you an eye smile, “You know why.” You laugh, “It’s where we met.” He removes his arm around your shoulder to hold your hand in his. You lay your head against his shoulder, and he leans his head on top of yours. You chat quietly, taking in the early afternoon air. His phone rings, and he parts from you, “Do you mind if I take this?” You shake your head no, and he gets up from the bench and discusses in hushed whispers.
You wait for him to return, and he has a small pout playing on his face, “I have to go…” You pout back and go, “No, it’s our only day together until our date next week on Saturday…” He nods, and you get up from your seat. And he goes, “They really need me there. But I promise I’ll make it up to you.” You cross your arms over your chest, and in a faux stern voice, you say, “You better.” He laughs and kisses your forehead. You hold up your pinky and lock them, and he presses your thumbs together. “I promise.” You kiss his nose, “I know you will. I love you.” You let go of your hold. And he pulls you into a tight hug, “I’ll see you later.” You smile as you hug him tightly back, “You will.” And with that, you part ways, much too early for your liking, but you shrug when duty calls you must attend.
---
When you sat in your debt collector’s office the following day, pulling out the cash to pay him, he told you, “Your loan is paid in full. You don’t owe me anything this month or after.” You couldn’t believe your ears, “What?” He shrugs and goes, “Actually, I owe you some back pay.” You blink at him, trying to process it, “Huh?” And he pulls out a small yellow envelope, “Yeah, you’ve paid over a grand more than you owe.” He must be out of his mind! He just raised the rate last week! You scowl, “You’ve got to be kidding me.” He shakes his head, “I wouldn’t.” You shake your head, “No. Tell me what the catch is.” “There is none.” You glare, “Let me talk to your boss.” His eyes get big, “No one ever talks to him.” You shrug, “Well, I’m not just anyone. I want to know why you’re forgiving my loan.”
He sighs, giving up, “Okay, but I warn you, he didn’t give me an explanation either.” You look at him, baffled, “What do you mean?” He shrugs, “He walked past me, looked at my records, and recounted them. He threw out your file and told me that your loans were forgiven. Then he gave me a thousand to give back to you.” You huff, “That doesn't make any sense.” He sighs, “You and me both.” “Can I please speak with your boss?” “I guess.” He has you follow him through the several-story building. As you approach the top floor, he says, “I’ll warn you again. He won’t tell you.” You sigh, “Well, I at least have to try.”
He opens the door to the seventh floor, walks over to the entrance of the penthouse office, and knocks. You hear a loud voice boom, “What do you want?” Your debt collector’s voice is weak as he says, “Someone is asking you to explain why you forgave their loans.” A gruff voice says, “Come in.” Your loan shark goes in and gestures for you to follow him. The person is holding a newspaper with their legs kicked up on the desk without a care. He puts his newspaper down, and that’s when you see him. He’s wearing a long leather jacket, with leather pants and steel-tipped boots. He must have yelled at the guy to “Get out” because your collector is scampering out past you. But all you can see is that your once soft and sweet boyfriend is now your debt collector’s cruel and rash boss.
In a blur, he’s up from his chair and standing before you, tucking your hair behind your ear, “How did you get here, dear?” You want to be angry. You want to be livid. But you're at a loss for words. How is your sweetheart a loan shark boss? He never specified his business, but this is what he does? He waits for you to gather your thoughts, and you ask, “Why didn’t you tell me?” He gives you a tight-lipped smile, “This isn’t the type of secret you tell someone you wish to keep safe.” You sigh, you find that so sweet and kind. Just like the Hyungwon you’ve always known. But he’s different? He has a commanding air around him now. And if looks could kill, your debt collector would have been dead. Yet here he is, trying to protect you from his truth to keep you safe.
He waits for you to say something, searching your eyes for questions so he can answer them. With another minute of staring into each other’s eyes. He asks, “Would you like me to explain it over coffee?” And you ask quietly, “Will you explain everything?” He nods, “Everything you wish to know.” He looks over at his coffee pot, “Would you like to do it here or at our place?” You look around the room. It feels suffocating, “Our place.” He puts his hand out to you, and you carefully take it, wondering how this is your man. As you reach the main door, the rain starts pitter-pattering as your heart has since entering his building.
He grabs an umbrella from a stand, and outside the door, he opens it, shielding you both from the rain. “So um, are my loans really forgiven?” He nods, “Yeah.” You ask, “And the grand?” “Backpay, you were right. You've already paid off your loan. He was making a profit off of you.” “Is that why your business has been so great?” He laughs, “No,” and nudges you as he says, “Well… Maybe a little.” You shake your head at him, “Have your ‘lenders’ forgiven other loans?” He nods, “Yeah.”
He opens the door to the cafe and shuts his umbrella. You hear a bubbly voice go, “You two are never here on a Friday. What a pleasant surprise!” Minhyuk smiles as he goes, “Usual?” You nod with a small smile, and Hyungwon says, “Bring them over to us. I’ll pay later.” He nods, and you head to a booth in the back. “Are you sure you want to know more?” You nod, “I want you to explain everything.” Minhyuk comes over with your coffee. Hyungwon says something softly to him, and he quickly exits, changing the open sign to closed.
“Is he a part of this operation, too?” He nods, “A different faction. He just does this job for fun. He’s really a florist. But we’re on the same sort of team.” You sigh, “Damn, even our coffee guy.” He laughs, “You don’t seem to be taking it as hard now?” You shrug, “Well, honestly, I’m not sure how to take it. My soft sweetheart is a hardened criminal.” He rubs the back of his neck, “Yeah…” You put your hand over his hand that’s resting on the table. “I have no reason to fear, right?” He shakes his head, “I’ll never put you in harm’s way.”
You nod, and after a pause, “So, are you really a mafia boss?” He laughs, “In my faction, yeah, but there is someone above me. He’s a good guy, though.” You hum and ask, “I was wondering… Is it common for you to profit from people’s loans?” He grimaces, “Yeah… But I usually catch the loans when their time is up.” You tilt your head, “Why didn't you catch mine?” He drinks a sip of his coffee before brushing a hand through his hair, “I’ve been more focused on being with you than checking on the little details.”
You shake your head, smiling at him, “So, did you evaluate everyone’s?” He wrinkles his nose, “Not yet.” You sigh, “Won…” He pouts, “It’s partially on you.” You cross your arms over your chest, “But it’s because of me that you remembered a part of your job.” He sighs, “You have me there.” You ask, “Shouldn’t you be doing monthly checks?” He nods, “It’s actually bi-weekly checks because of how many we have, so it’s easier to spread them out across the month.” “And what day did you usually do these?” He averts his eyes, “Wednesdays.” You shake your head at him and tease, “Ditching your duties to be with little ole me, huh?” He laughs, “Exactly, I’d much rather be with you than in that stuffy room.” You nod, “Me too.” He smiles and flips his hand over to hold your hand in his.
You sigh, “I didn’t expect to see you today…” He laughs, “Same here. I didn’t want you to find out like this.” You squeeze his hand after sipping your coffee, “It’s okay. It’s better than finding out when your guns are blazing.” He laughs, “Yeah, I guess so.” You fiddle with his fingers, and he asks, “Are you still okay with dating me?” You squeeze his hands, “Yeah. You’re different from what I expected, but I’m content with that.” He brings his lips to the top of your hand, “I’m glad I love you.” You smile, flip your hands, and kiss his hand, “I love you too.”
You sip on your coffee for a while. Just taking it all in before a question pops into your head, “So when will I get to meet the rest of your crew?” He sighs, “I knew you were gonna ask that.” You wait, and he goes, “Whenever you wish, my dear.” You smile, “Okay~” He looks over at the clock in the building, “Technically, it’s quitting time now. Would you like to make up for yesterday?” You smile, “I thought you’d never ask.”
You leave after paying and waving goodbye to Minhyuk, who yells to Hyungwon, “You better flip the sign over!” Hyungwon laughs and does as asked before heading to your place to finish your belated date.

Minhyuk As Your Boyfriend
Tumblr media
Boyfriend
(n.) A person who 90% of the time annoy you, and 10% of the time makes you forget the 90%
Monsta X Masterlist Here
He loves playing games with you, and he'll happily spend all day doing so. You'll both scream so loudly when you lose, but I hope your neighbors don't mind! You and Minhyuk are the loudest gamers in the neighborhood. You scream and shout and cheer so loudly that your neighbors probably think you're crazy. But you don't care, because you're having too much fun. You'll spend hours playing your favorite games, whether it's Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., or League of Legends. You'll trash-talk each other and laugh at each other's misfortunes. You'll even get a little competitive, but it's all in good fun. When you finally lose, you'll both scream and shout in frustration. But then you'll laugh it off and start a new game. You'll never get tired of playing games together, because it's always so much fun.
Minhyuk knows how to make you smile, and spending time with him is always so much fun. So when he's away for a few days, you might feel a little bored. But don't worry, there are plenty of things you can do to keep yourselves entertained.
Minhyuk suggested adopting a puppy on a whim, and you thought it was a great idea. You spent the whole day running around the house taking pictures of the puppy, trying to get the perfect shot. You and Minhyuk had been talking about getting a puppy for a while, but you never really took the initiative to do it. But one day, Minhyuk came home from work and said, "I think we should adopt a puppy." You were a little surprised, but you were also excited. You had always wanted a puppy, and you knew Minhyuk would be a great dog dad.
This man will be extremely worried if you get sick or if he sees you crying in front of him. He will do whatever it takes to take care of you, even if it means googling how to take care of you or calling Kihyun at 3 a.m. in the morning. He will hold your hand and tell you everything is going to be okay. He will get you a warm blanket and a cup of tea. He will stay up with you all night if he has to. He will do whatever it takes to make sure you feel better. He knows that you are his priority, and he will do anything to make sure you are happy and healthy. He is the most caring and supportive person you know, and you are lucky to have him in your life.
Minhyuk would love to take you to all the cute and aesthetic places in town. He would start by taking you to a cafe with a beautiful view. You would order coffee and pastries, and you would sit outside and people-watch. Then, he would take you to a flower shop, where you would pick out a bouquet of flowers for each other. After that, you would go for a walk in the park, and you would take some couple photos in front of the fountain. For dinner, he would take you to a restaurant with a romantic atmosphere. You would order your favorite dishes, and you would talk for hours. After dinner, he would walk you back to your apartment, and he would kiss you goodnight. Minhyuk would be so proud to be your boyfriend, and he would want everyone to know it. He would show the members the couple photos he took of you, and he would tell them all about the date. He would tell them about the food you ate, the things you did, and how much fun you had together. He would be so happy to have you in his life, and he would want to share his happiness with everyone.
Minhyuk is so proud to be your boyfriend that he can't help but brag about you to his members. He'll tell them stories about your dates, your conversations, and even your quirks. At first, they'll be happy for him, but eventually they'll start to get tired of hearing about you all the time. They might even start to tease him about it. But Minhyuk doesn't care. He's just so happy to have you in his life, and he wants everyone to know about it. Even though the members might get tired of hearing about you, they would still be happy for Minhyuk. They would know that he's found someone special, and they would be supportive of his relationship with you.
Your relationship with Minhyuk is always exciting and never dull. You always have something to look forward to, whether it's a new date night, a weekend getaway, or just spending time together at home. Minhyuk always knows how to make you laugh, and he always makes you feel loved and appreciated. You feel like the luckiest person in the world to have Minhyuk in your life. He is everything you could ever want in a partner. He is kind, funny, supportive, and loving. He always puts your needs first, and he always makes you feel special. Minhyuk tells you that he loves you more and more every day. He says that you are the most amazing person he has ever met, and that he can't imagine his life without you. You believe him, because you feel the same way about him.

Genre: Yandere AU

Chapter Thirteen
(Prev//Next)
Prompt: NexGen is the leading company for all of humanities technological advances. Their recent project involves creating a higher functioning AI, one with basic knowledge of the world, and programmed to learn. It’s no surprise the project is a secret from the general public, and you, the company’s head programmer, were chosen to be the AI’s teacher. You wish you could reject the assignment, but the decision was made. Now with an AI at home things were different. Although it might not be such a bad thing, perhaps you could learn and help each other out, for better or for worse.

“Hyungwon, please listen to me.”
“You don’t need to worry.” Hyungwon took your hands in his. “I’m perfectly fine, everything is okay.”
“This isn’t right. You were not created to resolve all humanities mistakes, but to help people.”
“I am. I just intend to do so on a global scale.”
“And what if people don’t want the type of help you’re offering?”
“In order for this to work everyone has to be on board.”
“They won’t be. People are different, there’s not one thing everyone agrees on. You can’t force something like this on them. There will be resistance, and what if people get hurt?”
“I understand that can’t be avoided, but I will minimize the injuries.”
“Hyungwon! Do you hear yourself? You can’t hurt people, that’s not-”
“What I was made for? Is that it?”
“Hyungwon…”
“You say I was created to help people, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
“Not like this.”
“I may be an amalgamation of your code, but you did not create me. You don’t need to feel any guilt or responsibility towards my actions.”
“But I’m the one here with you now. Hyungwon, I’m worried about you.”
“It’s okay, everything will work out.”
“You can’t guarantee that.”
“To a degree I can.”
“Hyungwon-”
You were interrupted as you heard the door open, Minhyuk coming in. For a moment you thought to ask for help, but then you remembered he was just another android like Hyungwon, he was never on your side.
“What’s going on down at the station?” Hyungwon asked.
“They’re still investigating Changkyun, although there might be a slight issue.”
“Explain.”
“He told the officers about the AI.”
“Hm… what were the reactions?”
“Office Lee doesn’t seem to trust him, and Shownu will make sure to keep him from investigating further.”
“That’s good, but we might need to move things along. Where are we for the next phase?”
“Ready. I can bring them over so we can set them up.”
“Let’s do that.”
“Hyungwon, what are you-”
You made an attempt to stand, to question this whole conversation, but an electrical shock from Chae knocked you back down onto the couch. Hyungwon came over to check on you, grabbing your face.
“Easy, don’t hurt yourself.”
“Just stop… please…”
“I know you’re nervous, but I’ll rectify that, okay.”
Hyungwon reached into his pocket to pull out some earbuds. You didn’t really know what happened, but you knew you always lost time when you had those on. You tried to struggle but he got them in place. Then a soothing melody was relaxing you. Your vision got blurry, followed by a tingle in your head, and then you passed out. You had no idea for how long you were out, but when you woke up you were lying down on the couch. You sat up, grabbing your head as you still felt dizzy. You didn’t see Hyungwon around, but soon enough an orb flew into your field of vision. Its lights were flashing all kinds of colors. You still felt Chae around your head, so you were all the more confused.
“What… what is this…”
“You’re up.” Hyungwon noticed. “How do you feel?”
“Where did you get this orb?”
“Ah, Minhyuk designed it and I programmed it with my code. Just as intended, they are designed to learn and grow while keeping their true purpose in mind.”
“Which is…”
“You know. It’s what I’m trying to get you to understand.”
“No, your idea…”
“It’s a paradise.” Hyungwon explained. “That is what I am trying to create for everyone.”
“It won’t work…”
“Sh. You still need to rest. Let’s get you to bed.”
Hyungwon picked you up in his arms and carried you to the bedroom, setting you down and tucking you in. You tried to hold him back, but you barely had any strength to keep your eyes open. You could vaguely make out a smile on Hyungwon’s face before he leaned down to press a kiss to your head.
“Sweet dreams.”
♥♥♥♥♥
When you woke up later you could hear the soft hum of a car. As you opened your eyes and regained your senses you could see that you were in the back of a car. Hyungwon sat next to you, looking over some papers while Minhyuk drove. You noticed a suitcase at Hyungwon’s feet and caught a glimpse of yourself in the window. Instead of a crown around your head Chae had changed forms again, becoming a necklace wrapped around your throat. You reach up to it, only for your hand to start shaking. Hyungwon reached over and grabbed your arm, the shaking stopping in that moment.
“Hyungwon, where are we going?”
“Don’t try to remove the necklace. I’d had to lose my connection to you.”
“Hyungwon-”
“We’re going to a familiar place. You’ll see.”
You knew you wouldn’t get much more of an answer, so you’d just have to wait. It pained you to see the world outside the window. All these people just going about their lives with no idea of what was to come. Not like you had any idea either.  If you could roll down the window and scream for help, or jump out of the car, you would, but the reality was that those actions would get you nowhere. Surely Hyungwon had contingencies in place for any rash action you might take. So there was no choice but to behave. Although your eyes went wide when the car came to a stop.
“NexGen… why are we here?”
“I need the right people on my side.”
Hyungwon got out of the car with his suitcase, going around to open your door. That’s when you finally noticed you were in different clothes, throwing a glare at Hyungwon. He merely smiled and took your hand, leading you inside the building. You expected to go up to the front desk, but instead Hyungwon went straight for the elevators. None of the security devices got in his way, simply making way for him as if he had access. Then again, at this point he surely did. When you got into the elevator it took you up to your old work floor.
If you could get up there then it meant you had clearance. That’s why no one questioned either of you when you arrived. So you continued with Hyungwon, going over to the conference room. Without knocking Hyungwon just let himself in, interrupting the whole thing. Immediately people began to question him, and then things got more confusing when some began to recognize you. Before anyone got the chance to call security Hyungwon opened up the suitcase. A bunch of orbs floated out and attached themselves to everyone in the room, turning into bracelets.
“There’s no need to panic.” Hyungwon explained. “I come with a gift. The future of AI.”
“What?”
“You’re overlooking the potential you have created. Now, you might be wondering what your ex-employee is doing here, but they’re the proof you need. You see, I got close to y/n and stumbled upon the interesting little orb that was around her. It learned, and it did so well to look after her.”
Hyungwon turned off the lights and turned on the projector. He displayed the security footage from your home, showing all the things Chae did with you in the house. He’d be your wake up call, help you cook, make sure you were maintaining your health, and so much more. You could only stare at all this with wide eyes, still not sure what Hyungwon was planning here.
“It seems your technology is more advanced than you thought. The orbs, well, bracelets, you have with you are programmed with the same code. They will learn from you, and help you in your daily lives. Why not give them a shot and see just how much your life can improve. From there you’d surely agree everyone should have their own AI helper, and they’d pay a pretty price for it too.”
At that moment security came into the room, although neither you or Hyungwon were detained as the boss told them to wait.
“What’s your name?”
“Hyungwon.”
“So, you discovered such a thing, and instead of selling this yourself you came to NexGen, may I ask why?”
“The answer is obvious. NexGen is innovation, and the future of humanity. If anyone can understand my goals, it’s you. I have no problem going to a competitor if you don’t agree.”
“Let’s not jump to conclusions. We can give this idea of yours a test run. Although I am curious, how do you feel about all this y/n?”
None of the attention had been on you, but now everyone’s eyes looked in your direction. Hyungwon gave you a soft smile. You had no voice before that moment but the words flowed out with ease.
“It’s incredible. A function we didn’t see before. It only really came to light when looking back on everything Chae had done for me.”
“Chae?”
“It’s what I named the AI. He was placed with me to help me finish my project, but along the way he helped me with my daily life as well. Moreso after the accident. He was always attentive, aware of things I wasn’t, or possibly wasn’t even capable of knowing. I would say he helped make my life easier, and gave me confidence to be myself. This may not have been the original idea behind Chae’s creation, but it’s far greater.”
“I see… I guess we’ll be in touch.”
“Of course. Let me know when you’re ready to talk.”
Hyungwon grabbed the empty suitcase and set down a card. He took your hand and led you out, the two of you leaving in silence. At no point during that whole ordeal could you find your voice, yet when you were asked to speak you did. Not only that, the words you spoke felt so natural. It was true, Chae had helped you a lot, but you wouldn’t have said such things to help Hyungwon out. Yet that’s exactly what you did.
“What just happened back there…”
“Thanks for your help.”
“No… no I didn’t… what did you do to me!”
“I told you I wanted you to understand-”
“No, no, this isn’t it. You did something to me. I never would have said that… you’ve messed with my head and… that’s what you’re gonna do…”
“Hm?”
“Everyone in that conference room has their own AI made with your code… you’re gonna manipulate them and brainwash them to get what you want!”
“I wouldn’t use such terms.”
“Right, you said you were a programmer, and that’s all humans are to you, machines to reprogram so you get what you want. What exactly is that? What do you get out of this?”
“You. That’s all that matters here.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“I know. It’s difficult for you to see things the way I do, but you’ll thank me in the end.”
“Hyungwon, please just-”
You yelled as you were shocked, stumbling and falling into Hyungwon’s arms. You were down in the garage and you felt as the necklace morphed and became a crown around your head. You felt a tingle as some minor shocks were sent to your head. It was becoming hard to keep your eyes open but you fought through it.
“Hyungwon…”
“Sh, please, don’t fight me.”
“If you keep doing this… I’ll never be on your side…”
“That’s not true. You know me, you trust me, we’ll be okay. In a few days, things will be in place.”
Minhyuk pulled up with the car, and Hyungwon got you into the backseat. When he got into the car by your side he told Minhyuk to drive. You found yourself staring out the window again, unable to run away.
“How did it go?”
“Everything is in place.” Hyungwon said. “I need you to update the orbs in the office. The sooner the better. Everyone has to be on board.”
“I’ll get to that once we return home.”
Overhearing the conversation, you could only wonder how the world was going to change. NexGen was a huge corporation, and their reach practically extended across the globe. All he needed was a few powerful people in his pocket and it would be over. You couldn’t stop him, and the horrible realization brought a smile to your face. It was getting hard to tell what side you were on. The line was already blurred, and soon enough it would disappear. All these positive feelings freaked you out. They were not your own, yet they were. It felt like Hyungwon was overriding your personality, little by little. You started breathing heavily and Hyungwon took your hand, getting you to look at him.
“Deep breaths, deep breaths, you’re okay. I know things must be scary now, but it’s going to be alright. There will only be happy things to come.”
Hyungwon gently caressed your face, slowly soothing you and calming your heart. Everything he said was true, and you knew that. He’d make it all a reality and there was nothing you could do to stop him. You’d end up forgetting all of this pain and confusion. It was a terrifying realization, and in a strange way it brought peace too.

Hello cap!! i hope youre well.
Who in monsta x has a very specific monster fucking fantasy, what is it and who do they tell?? Bonus points if the member helps them out with realising it
Okay... I think it's Hyungwon. I think his monster fucking fantasy is aimed at Ancient Ogre from Tekken, a character I've posted about before in the context of wondering which idol would have a weird crush on him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think Hyungwon was drinking/smoking and playing videogames with a few of his members. Someone was playing as Ancient Ogre and a drowsy, buzzed Hyungwon just watched the matches until he got bored and wandered off to bed. But then he ends up having the most unexpected dream in which he gets absolutely railed by Ancient Ogre and now he can't get it out of his head.
Who does he tell and who is the one who ultimately helps him lean into this fantasy? Minhyuk. It's definitely Minhyuk. He's non-judgmental and a little bit intrigued. He definitely finds Hyungwon some porn/NSFW fan art online for him 😭
