I think it's probably The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, by Natasha Pulley.right now. It's a lovely, quietly fantastical love story.

Honorable mentions to The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern (another, less quietly fantastical love story), which I would have said a few years ago before I read the above; and Sunshine, by Robin McKinley (a distinctly different take on vampire stories), just because it lives in my brain rent free; The Luminous Dead, by Caitlin Starling (traumatized lesbians in caves) because it also lives in my brain rent free and I read it in one day during fucking Dragoncon; and... pick any one of the first three Kushiel's Legacy books by Jacqueline Carey, which taught teenage Dae that bisexuality is a thing and also that being kinky doesn't mean there's something wrong with you.

#not hannibal #ask memes #personal #uttermywish #thanks for memeing me!#i have a hard time picking One Favorite book xP #so you get a short list #moderately horrified not to put anything of Janny Wurts's on there #but while I have loved her books very well for a lot of my younger life i haven't reread any of them recently #i read mostly sci-fi and fantasy when i'm not reading journal articles obviously #i feel like neil gaiman should be on this list but the fact is he hasn't written any one standout thing for me #i just generally vibe with his ideas #and i like the adaptations of what he writes more than the original incarnations #(I DO actually love the sandman comics though)#(which is exceptional because i kind of hate comics as an artistic medium)
