Look I don’t want for Rhaenyra’s pain to be minimized and vilified but it’s the double standard of those mods that gets me.

In the show adaptation House of the Dragon all four are played by skinny actors. When they were called out for this casting choice, the writers had the audacity to claim it's actually sexist for the leading lady to be fat.

Can you imagine Nicola Coughlan, Elizabeth Webster or Daisy May Cooper as a fantasy queen. A woman who is desired by men, called "The Realm's Delight", considered to be the most beautiful woman in all of Westeros etc. and is played by a fat actress.

Ok so I haven't watched the house of dragons but I *love* Nicola Coughlan on bridgerton so much?!?!?

Was the Velaryon family also black in the books?

because I've seen some fans of the show accuse artist or even fanarts of being racist just because they decide to draw/portray the Velaryon being white according to the book canon version, despite the fact there is no description of their skin color.

No, they were not. They were white. Corlys, Laena, and Laenor would have been described as such through darker-dark skin color if so, just as Nettles and the Summer Islanders and Missandei all were at one point or another, but they are not.

(The Dornish are not PoCs, they are "spicy whites", [refer to image below of GRRM's reply ato a fan abt race in ASoIaF and adaptions] and THIS POST I made).

Ryan point blank said that he/they made the Valyrians black for the diversity count and that it was an advantage to have it "obvious" Rhaenyra had kids who weren't Laenor's.

GRRM said he wished he could have made the Valyrians darker skinned. Which tells us that they canonically, typically, are not PoCs/Black.

Not all canon Valyrian/descendants are pale-skinned OR white (Nettles, Bellegere Otherys' kids by Aegon IV, Baelor Breakspear [Baelor was not canonically PoC, again, at least he cannot be transferred as the modern def of "poc"]), but the Valyrians are a majority pale-skinned and white in both pre/post Conquest Planetos history.

Of course, it's always possible that some artists choose to ONLY portray bk versions of the Velaryons BECAUSE the bk/orig/canon Velaryons are white...but that doesn't mean ALL artists who refuse to draw HotD characters/actors do so bc they are racist, bc HotD characters =/= to their F&B orig counterparts in terms of characterization or appearance. Sometimes it's because they hate the costumes or simply don't like HotD's story, how they treat actors, etc. Or they simply make so much more F&B/ASOIAF content than the TV adaptations bc they prefer the orig story and characters.

fkaluis on tumblr/fkadaeneyrs on Twitter was one who first made only art based on strictly what existed for Rhaenyra and the others pre-HotD; Rhaenyra especially nearly never is drawn in her HotD costumes...bc HotD really dialed back on her extravagance. But fkaluis has also seemingly decided to do more "merges" of HotD and F&B/ASOIAF but upgrade HotD to resemble more F&B/ASOIAF-familiar imagery with original elements in their work. Laena Velaryon, Rhaena of Pentos, and Baela is Black in many, many of their work, but they never wear the HotD costumes. They also love drawing Black Baela/Rhaena is what their book!selves were described as having worn or imagined given what other canon art shows for Rhaenyra.

Examples [order: rhaena, jocelyn baratheon, rhaenyra, laena x rhaenyra, laena x daemon, rhaenyra x laenor, baela x jacaerys, rhaena, baela, baela, laena, HotD young rhaenyra in upgraded and mod version of show costume in epi 4, and finally hotD older Rhaenyra in upgraded and mod version of show costume in epi 8, finally Aegon III w/Daenaera Velaryon]:

See how all the Valyrians/Velaryons/Targs also have purple eyes in his work, while the show doesn't? And Daenaera canonically is described as having skin as pale "as snow":

Rhaena and Baela had "fine features", which code for European white in most white-written literature....as well as here, to distinguish them from the Velaryon boys' "snub" noses:

And the two Rhaenyra art piece beside the Aegon III x Daenaera ne showcase modifications of HotD costumes and hair on face/bodies of Milly and Emma.

Of course PoCs and Black people can have "fine" features (stronger nose bridges, thinner lips, etc.), but in Western literature today, as well as for a long time since the late Mid Ages, white people tend to not describe white people's skin unless its to really emphasize their beauty through paleness, describe how it's transitioning to something else through thr flow/nonflow of blood, etc. Everyone else, to make it clear they aren't white, are ALWAYS told to have olive, brown, dark skin...unless they want to say they've (white people who've tanned OR darker skinned or South/Med EU-coded white people) tanned then it gets confusing for PoC/Black readers. Then you'd need other clues like the features and how people in the world treat them, even if it seems innocuous or positive.

Which means people have got to do a little investigating or light inquiry to the artist if they can if they really want to discover that the artists is racist.

With all due respect, when seeing people are being allocated partners for the big bang, you and emilykaldwen are presumably hooking people up. You're viewing who is who before matching them up but correct me if I'm wrong. Are they anonymous when you go through the submissions and you don't know either or are you aware of who is who before matching people? Considering the fact you two are close to the two individuals paired up I think it's weird you decided to match two mutuals on that basis if you knew it was them beforehand. You cannot build community by joining mutuals together for challenges. We can work with our besties all year round. The challenge is meant to be a chance to widen our horizons. It doesn't matter if you linked one of them up with other people 🤷 maybe using a random generator would be better so then it takes you and emilykaldwen out of the reckoning. Pretty sure people would love to work with lady morrogen and vampire ex girlfriend who are so talented.

The pairing is done entirely by me! @emilykaldwen very kindly offered to help me to run this year’s event, dealing with writer and artist queries and modding the Discord, so that I can focus on the behind the scenes admin stuff.

I do have visibility of the author’s name when summaries are submitted. The process just wouldn’t work if I didn’t, as it would create heaps of extra work of me having to contact each individual writer to be like “hey, is this yours?” when it comes to announcing the pairings.

I strip away all identifying information, place the summaries into an Excel and then send it out to the artists. They then select the fics that they like the sound of. I only ever say no to people if someone has already requested a fic. Both artists and authors have no idea of who they’re working with until I announce it.

Taking away the element of choice for artists would deter them from signing up, I think! For instance, if you’re typically a person who enjoys Aegon centric fiction, being assigned a fic that is centred around Tyland Lannister might not be particularly inspiring, and the author would end up with artwork that’s reflective of that. Everyone should be able to work to their strengths!

If you’re unhappy with how the event is run, you are welcome to start your own! No one is obligated to participate in mine. I didn’t have to ask permission to start my Big Bang, I just did it. This is the second year that I’ve done it, and both events have been great!

Your hang up seems very much centred around Mare and Alex, which leads me to believe this is a personal issue for you, rather than one based around the running of my event. I don’t want to get in the middle of that, but I would recommend sitting with those feelings and exploring why you feel that way.

Since the CK3 AGOT Mod got it's update I've been playing in the Vizzy T Era and EVERY TIME without fail Rhaenyra is betrothed to Aegon THE SECOND he's born.

I'm back on my ck3 agot shit. This time I started as Eddard. Aerys managed to succesfully pull the trigger on the nuke wildfire bombs killing himself, half of King's Landing and Jaime. (It was done very well, actually. The mod had screaming sound effects and little green explosions in kl) So, Tywin of course joined the Rebellion. We did end up winning, but since Jaime's dead there's also no Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen meaning the Robert and Cersei marriage does have only true born heirs.

On the other hand: both Rhaella and Elia survived, as well as Rhaenys and baby Aegon, and they're hanging out in Essos with Viserys and Dany and with Rhaella as head of the family. (She actually re-married - matrilinear - and had another son)

Mod Deep Love: Mother has bought herself a Hitachi wand for sexual relief. And it does the job well. Aegon spies his mother using it but is a good boy and lets her finish... as he also finishes with his fist around his cock. He has a great idea and needs to bring Aemond in for it.

Aemond gives his mother massages all the time, and he and Aegon have a great idea. The next time she lays down for a back rub, Aemond brings out that wand. Mother jumps at the sound of it and tries to stop him, but Aemond just goes ahead rubbing her back with it "This is a massager isn't it? It was in your drawer." Mother is bright red as she agrees "Yes, it's just for massages."

All while Mother is slowly growing wetter and wetter. Trying not to squirm or buck. She's so close to humping her own hand.

this is laena targaryen, daughter of jace and baela, from my CK2 playthrough. she has a dragon named seasong. she will co-rule with her older brother and husband, baelor, whose dragon is named glory. they have three younger siblings, rhaenys, aegon, and viserys. baelor and laena's first child is named aegon, but he had a twin sister who died at birth, who they named in honor of baela. laena is willful, rowdy, and lustful, similar to her great-great-grandma alyssa. (the agot mod for CK2 was made well before HotD was released, so the characters go off their book descriptions -- I may redraw laena in the future to follow the show's descriptions)
