An Abbreviated History of Mecha Part 3.2: Condition Green (1986-1990)
Tumblr media
Welcome back to An Abbreviated History of Mecha! Last time, we covered the first half of the 80's with a bit too much of a focus on the works of one Ryousuke Takahashi. If you remember from the last post, I also covered one series in particular: Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I'm bringing it up here so that it'll be fresh in your head: Galactic Heroes would be one of many Original Video Animation (OVA) series that would be released in this time.
It should also be noted that, unlike last time, there would be a new medium for mecha stories to flourish in: video games! While video games existed at least since the late 70's, it would be in the 80's where they would become mainstream.
Anyways, let's get down to business. Now, before I throw each and every one of you into the bay!!
The Five Star Stories (1986)
Tumblr media
Created by Mamoru Nagano, the Five Star Stories would be his first major solo project after leaving Sunrise due to the higher-ups constantly blue-balling him. Covering at least five books and a couple of OVAs, the Five Star Stories is one of the true classics of the canon of mecha.
Now if you want to get an inkling of what he did before the Five Star Stories? I'll cover that next time.
Metal Armor Dragonar (1987)
Tumblr media
Coming off the heels of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Sunrise was eager to fill in the void that Gundam left in its wake. And that's where Metal Armor Dragonar comes in. While I felt weird referring to Layzner as being Gundam-like, here I don't. Dragonnar was made first and foremost to fill in for Gundam, especially after the lackluster performance of ZZ.
Robocop (1987)
Tumblr media
Also in 1987, we would see the release of Paul Verhoven's Robocop. Robocop is a part of that generation of 80's films where the original movie's deep scathing criticism would be watered down by corporate America's need to constantly make money off of each and every remotely popular series. And while that may be true, the original Robocop still holds up as a scathing criticism of American capitalism in the 80's.
Rockman/Megaman (1987)
Tumblr media
(I just found this gif on Tenor. If anyone knows who to source it to, please let me know.)
1987 would also see the release of Capcom's Megaman, one of the icons of the halcyon days of gaming. Sporting his arm-mounted Mega Buster, Mega Man would run through multiple stages in an attempt to stop Doctor Wily and his army of Robot Masters. Megaman would become one of the more iconic of Capcom's roster of characters, though over time he'd be left behind in favor of other characters like Ryu from Street Fighter, Dante from Devil May Cry, and my personal favorite, Rathalos from Monster Hunter. Fortunately, the Blue Bomber would never truly be forgotten, especially with the surprise release of Mega Man 11 in 2018.
Warhammer 40,000 (1987)
Tumblr media
Man, 1987 was a packed year for mecha, wasn't it.
In 1987, Games Workshop would release the first edition ruleset for Warhammer 40,000, the sci-fi spinoff to their popular Warhammer Fantasy setting. The grim dark future of the 41st millennium is filled to the brim with all sorts of mechanical monstrosities, from the hulking Imperial titans, to the crimson-robed tech priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the mechanical hordes of the Necron.
A fun thing to also note is that, due to both series having a big modelmaking scene, Warhammer 40k tends to see an overlap in fanbases with Mobile Suit Gundam. It certainly helps when both peddle in plastic crack, and as someone who is addicted to the Gundam variety, game respects game.
Patlabor (1988)
Tumblr media
Created in 1988 by the collective known as Headgear (which includes famed director Mamoru Oshii among its ranks), I would consider Patlabor to be one of the greatest love letters to mecha ever created. Patlabor is a series where a lot of worldbuilding was added to justify the existence of the giant robots that the creators love so dearly. Something to take note of while watching Patlabor is the general optimism the series brings to the table, even though the series is often grouped together with shows like Armored Trooper VOTOMs.
Most of the series would release between the the end of the decade, but one entry in this franchise would release during a rather rough moment in Japanese history. I'll cover it at some point when I get around to the 90's. Let's just say that if you know what the phrase "Kill Wyvern" is, you'll probably recognize what it'll be.
Also, not to toot my own horn or anything, but I did a write about Patlabor back in the day. So feel free to check that out as well if you have the time.
Cyberpunk 2020 (1988)
Tumblr media
(Footage from Cyberpunk 2077)
In 1988, Mike Pondsmith would release the first edition of the Cyberpunk 2020 ruleset, because this is the 80's and tabletop RPGs are kind of the thing (Satanic Panic notwithstanding). In a move that will surprise no one, this series would help to codify a lot of tropes associated with the cyberpunk genre, including at the very least the concept of cyber psychosis.
In 2012, former Internet darling company CD Projekt Red would announce that they would be working on a video game adaptation of Cyberpunk called Cyberpunk 2077. Let's just leave it at that, as I don't really have nice things to say about CD Projekt Red.
Dragon's Heaven (1988)
Tumblr media
From mechanical designer Makoto Kobayashi comes 1988's Dragon's Heaven. This extremely stylish and artistically unique OVA is a product of what happens when you give someone who's career started with building garage kits the budget to make an OVA. You want to know where the budget went to? It went into making the models for the main mecha of the OVA. Don't take my word for it? Here's Kenny Lauderdale talking about exactly that.
And in case anyone's wondering, Makoto Kobayashi has, in fact, worked on Gundam before. He's the one who designed Zeta Gundam's Baund-Doc and The O.
Ghost in the Shell (1988)
Tumblr media
Also releasing in 1988 is the manga Ghost in the Shell. Created by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell would become an important series in the worlds of cyberpunk and anime, especially with the film that would release in 1995 directed by Mamoru Oshii. Specifically, this movie along with Akira would be some of the first anime that would really show that people outside of Japan had an interest in anime. Ghost in the Shell would also come to be one of the more influential works out there, as it would be the basis for the Wachowski's iconic movie The Matrix.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (1989)
Tumblr media
1989 would be greeted with the introduction of two (of many) culturally important mecha OVAs. The first is Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, which is also the first Gundam series to be directed by someone not named Yoshiyuki Tomino. War in the Pocket would be a great reminder of why Gundam works as a story, but it would also be one of the Gundam stories with, in my humble opinion, the strongest anti-war messages of the franchise.
Gunbuster (1989)
Tumblr media
The other would be Studio Gainax's first official (meaning not the Daicon short) animated series, Gunbuster. Arguably one of the most hot-blooded mecha series out there, Gunbuster is a series that tries to ground itself with real world physics before going "eh," throwing it all in the waste paper basket, and deciding that all we need is HOT BLOOD. This would be the first of many of Gainax's hits, and it would be the first of what I'm going to be referring to from here on out as Gainax's Elite Four.
Conclusion
We've covered a lot of series, but you might be asking yourself things like: "What was going on with Nagano?"
Don't worry, my friends. We still have one more part for the 80's. And in case you're wondering why I saved this part for last, it's because Tomino's output in the 80's is pretty legendary due to how iconic pretty much every series is. Granted, not everyone talks about these series in this day and age, but anyone who's talked about mecha in any capacity will more than likely be able to recognize at least one of these series.
You will see the tears of time.

Tuesday Typings
I came back from the North American Science Fiction Convention with so many books. Notes on costume stuff, one giant costume todo list, and recent reads/watches as well.
Books acquired recently
The Archive Undying, Emma Mieko Candon, 2023, bought
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, 2020, bought — finished and enjoyed
The Sng of Achilles, Madeline Miller, 2012, bought
Translation State,, Ann Leckie, 2023, bought
Francis: The People's Pope, Ted Rall, allegedly autographed, 2018, bought
The Stars Like Dust, Isaac Asimov, 1996 paperback printing, gifted
The Courier, Gerald Brandt, 2016, free pile
Alliance Rising, C. J. Cherryh and Jane S. Fancher, 2019, free pile
Foundryside, Robert Jackson Bennett, 2019 Broadway promo printing, free pile
Mica, fille de Transyl, Michèle Laframboise, 2012, free pile — I do not read the French; this is going on a gift pile for a Francophone friend
To Climb a Flat Mountain, G. David Nordley, 2009?, bought after the author gave me an answer to a worldbuilding problem
Burning Days, Glenn Grant, 2011, free
This Virtual Night, C.S. Friedman, 2021, free
To Each This World, Julie Czerneda, 2022, free and signed
The Complete Smoke Trilogy, Tanya Huff, 2019, free
She Who Became The Sun, Shelley Parker-Chan, 2021, free
All of the free books are from Pemmi-Con; half are from DAW Publishers who were really, really generous.
Recent Reading and Watching
This is How You Lose the Time War surprised me with the identity of the Seeker; mid-book I thought there might be another operative tailing them, or a Purple child, or a third side to this war. That last prediction was quite close!
Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn - Bande Dessinee Episode: 0 wasn't particularly thrilling, but I value it because it fills out the characters of Full Frontal and Angelo Sauper, and how the Zeonist public sees things before the initiation of the Third Neo Zeon War, aka The Laplace Incident.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars has been good through season 7; I ned to track down season 8 to see if they later appearance of Ashoka in Star Wars Rebels makes any sense.
Legend of Galactic Heroes: I have finally finished this. RIP to a legend, but we all knew that the death flag for the last person to die was waved at the end of the third season. Rubinsky's end was also fitting: reflecting of how he was no longer part of the plot, he was also no longer part of politics. His last gasp felt irrelevant, and really was.
Pacific Rim: The Black is a 3dcg film that's reminiscent of RWBY and Dragon Prince in style, but with the same Ramin Djiwadi soundtrack, and some neat twists that really delve into the fridge horror of the setting. But this is a kids' show, so there's little blood, the decapitations happen out of frame, and the heads don't roll too far. Episode 7 has a nice "it's dangerous to go alone; take this" moment.
Computing
A 2.1A powerbank is not enough to stably power a Pi 1 B+ with a 4.0" square Hyperpixel Touch display and a wireless keyboard. Big Sad. Next question is if a PiSugar 3 battery controller will work with a Pi 1 B+ or if I should splurge $75 on a Pi 4 for this device.
I'd like to have a mobile compute terminal that's smaller than a 13" laptop, but still has USB ports. Scrollwheel and a button to toggle the OSK would also be nice.
Primary nonwork laptop's keyboard continues to degrade; It's becoming a desk item. Its degradation is the primary driver of the new palmtop development.
Actually, wait, I have a spare CM4 from a StereoPi 2 device. I could use that, with a compatible breakout board maybe. Or I could test the Hyperpixel screen on the Stereopi board directly. Then I'd have a 4" touchscreen mated to a … 5" wide board? Well, it'll at least let me test some things, like whether the CM4 works for this use case. Bonus dual cameras is a questionable bonus.
Crafting
KInda burnt out on crafting, tbh. Last two weeks were full of crunch before Pemmi-Con/NASFiC, which netted me a "Judge's Choice in Novice Class" award and "Best Use of Modern Tech" in the Masquerade competition.
Next up, over @glowingskull, I plan to post rundowns of the stuff I made, and maybe some shapefiles, but there's a lot of work left in this costume and I plan to redo large parts of the headgear.
Because, let's be honest, the post-con todo list for that costume is basically:
Better photographs?
Write up the project
Print off a holder for these parts, because I'm retiring them to mount on the wall
Redesign snout, again, to remove grilles and double-thicken all the parts
Resculpt temples and ears of skull
Put a visor in the eye holes
Eye-lights in visor?
Enclose head: back of skull, ventilation, neck sock
Redo the flame staff's camera monopod mount attachment point for durability (may require welding?)
Sculpt a model for the chestpiece, so it's plastic instead of foam
Sculpt a model for arm bracers
And then on top of that I also want to:
Document the Servicer outfit
Sew on a Masonic patch for the Servicer outfit
Build some DIY NVGs for use in costume projects like this one
Write up the Baba Yaga's Hut costume which won Best In Show
I think my next costume goal, after the revised Turaga Vakama, will be an Earth Federation Space Forces officer uniform, so I can give the planned "WTF is Zeon" lectures in character.
The next head goal will be a Deinonychus head with articulated jaw, which requires advancements in augmented reality. Need to get the StereoPi working, or ditch/sell it and switch to paired NVG monocles.
Music
I think it's time for Pacific Rim soundtracks. Pacific Rim: The Black sounds somewhere between the Pacific Rim movies' soundtracks and the tense violin work from the 2009 Sherlock Holmes movie with RDJ and Jude Law, soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Not particularly Australian, unfortunately.
Lego Stuff
Gotta merge the two submarine kits, and build the Emperor's Throne Room that I won at pinball at Pemmi-Con.

Requesting or Asking with Percie / Tea !
FYI, you can also just ask me questions in general! I love to talk about characters, my writing process, fandom things, and over all fun junk!
What media can you request for?
(purple represents what I’m currently interested in, still feel free to request anything different than what’s purple!)
> Avatar and the Last Airbender
> Blue Period
> BNA
> Carmen Sandiego (2019)
> Inside Job
> OK KO
> Lego Monkie Kid
> Miraculous Ladybug
> Nimona
> Rick and Morty
> Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
> Steven Universe
> Super Mario Bros (2023 Movie)
> She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
> The Legend of Korra
> Transformers (Bumblebee movies, G1, TF Prime, Rescue Bots)
> Trolls (All Media, except the show)
> Undertale (Original and AUs)
> Villainos
> Voltron
> Young Justice (2012)
Media may be added or deleted over time**
What can you request?
That one Alphabet thing, I’ve seen it and I forgot what it’s called
Drabbles (100 - 350 words)
Short Oneshots (400 - 1000)
Long Oneshots (1500 - 2000)
I will not go higher than that! If you want something super extensive, you’re gonna have to pay me. I have commissions open for those who might be interested! Click here to see my info on commissioning me!
What are my boundaries?
For general asks
> I feel like this is pretty obvious but I’m gonna add it anyways! Please don’t ask me about anything personal like: age, where I live, what I look like, or anything else like that. With AI coming to fruition, I want info (especially about what I look like) kept tight to my person.
> Know that if you ask for my opinion on something, I might not be very nice about it. Big examples: ships, tropes, etc. I don’t try to be mean, and I will add tone tags, but I won’t lie either
For writing requests
> I’m a minor, so no sexual things please.
> I’m an anti-shipper, so if you request something that’s proship esque (ex. minors in borderline sexual situations, incest pairings, etc) that’s an immediate denial
> I’m allowed to deny a request even if it’s not something that expressly goes against anything explicitly listed.
> Be specific with your requests! If I don’t understand the gist, I’ll respond asking you to elaborate. Over explaining what is always better than under explaining.
> Do not ask me to do your request! Respectfully, I have a process and it demotivates me when I feel pressured to deliver. (But ofc, after like a month and I still haven’t answered your text, pls shoot me another one!)
> I’m perfectly ok with criticism of my writing! It helps me grow and I always love hearing how I can improve! Just know the difference between constructive, helpful criticism and slander. (If you’re ever confused on your tone when criticizing me, feel free to use tone tags!)
Boundaries may be added over time**
If you ever need to find my posts…
Search up “percie responds to inquiries” for general asks
And “tea writes requests” for my writing requests!
If you ever see something I incorrectly tagged, please leave me a comment! I tend to forget.. ^^’
Thank you for looking at this and happy requesting / asking ! <3
I accidentally added a poll on mobile and it’s not letting me delete it :((

The nameplate of this damn sturdy precision Thrash machine reads 2017 - and, yes, the four Thrash'n'Death metallers from SMORRAH are definitely powerhouse guys!
Location: Gelsenkirchen. That's right, the oft-mentioned city known for its glorious soccer club Schalke 04, also home to the Teutonic Thrash Metal pioneers of Sodom. In this former mining area, the eerie legend of the nasty demon "Smorra", who sits on the chests of sleeping people at night and tries to suffocate them bitterly, has been reverently told for generations. LINE-UP: Marius Wegener • Vocals Daniel 'Pumper' Hartmann • Guitars Christian 'Kraje' Krajewski • Bass Raphael Swierczynski • Drums
Our local patriotic heroes gave their own heavy steel commando such a demonic name. Also breathtaking are the stunningly vehemently riffed, fatally powerful and groovy SMORRAH blasts of notes, skillfully crowned by many technical refinements - DEATH THRASH METAL that just pops!
With charismatic playing strength, the bright formation delivers immensely intense, gripping song loads, all of which drill into your consciousness like a workaholic miner on adrenaline!
SMORRAH have also written some similarly spooky stories on their sooty banner, which the determined and tried-and-tested foursome around front beast Marius hoist high into the half-heartedly blowing trend wind!
With their unmistakable and thoroughly uncompromising sound, paired with gloomy lyrics, the band knows how to convince every time anew! Influences from all Metal genres and beyond come together to form a Groove Thrash monster that takes no prisoners.

With their debut album "Welcome To Your Nightmare", SMORRAH release a total of 9 variedly conceived and hellishly powerfully produced songs.
High tension is guaranteed: "Welcome To Your Nightmare" energetically takes the listener on a gripping journey into the dark abysses of human psychology, leaving you hardly any time to catch your breath - the deliciously tight, bludgeon-from-the-bag quartet really does more than justify the legend surrounding the band's name!
Tireless headbangers, maniacal Thrashers and hungry Groove heads will all get their money's worth.
And anyone who has experienced these four likeable, down-to-earth heavyweights from Gelsenkirchen at one of their highly explosive and absolutely sweat-inducing live shows knows that there is only one direction with SMORRAH: Straight ahead! Auf Loik!

MEDIA FEEDBACK:
9,5 / 10 ➤ "... fat riffs that almost take your breath away ... the fantastic thing about the guys from Gelsenkirchen is that they don't let anything get in their way and do their own thing ... Caution: danger of addiction! Groovy thrash monsters could also be lurking by your bedside, waiting for a favourable opportunity ..." (Bleeding4Metal)
9 / 10 ➤ "... singer Marius can not only growl very cool, he also has clear vocals that get under your skin ... blast their groovy riff monsters almost non-stop around your ears or sneak into your thoughts in quiet passages ... one of the pearls of the underground, if not the pearl of the month ... convinces with honest Metal that defies all trends and fires from all cylinders for the entire playing time!" (Obliveon)
9 / 10 ➤ "... really fat ... produces strong pressure ... SMORRAH process the anger in their songs and you can feel that in the relentless sound ... everything is offered to torture your neck muscles or to let off steam in the mosh pit ... what a great groovy crusher!" (Metalheads DE)
9 / 10 ➤ "... a very good debut ... convinces with great musical work and ingenious songwriting ... never gets boring, but makes you want more ... what stands out above all is the constant musical class ... not only the voice of Wegener can be heard, but also the qualities of the other musicians ... so one perfectly written riff chases the next and the solos are also uniquely played ... Thrash songwriting in a class of its own ..." (Soundmagnet)
4 / 5 ➤ "... a proof to SMORRAH's ability to combine Thrash and Groove Metal influences into a cohesive and devastatingly heavy sound. With unrelenting aggression, haunting atmospheres and impressive musicianship, this album is a must for fans of extreme Metal ... cementing their place among the genre's top acts." (MetalUnderground AT)
8,8 / 10 ➤ "A true Thrash monster ... a very fat debut album, which not only comes along with energetic music, but was also packed with a fat sound. A cool combination of old and new Thrash." (Zephyr's Odem)
8,6 / 10 ➤ "… absolutely pummelling … definitely nods to Kreator and Sodom in here and the other German Thrash classics too … melodic leads … shreddy as hell too in spots … absolutely fantastic debut … crowned as my favourite Thrash Metal release so far this year … if you just love everything about Thrash and German Thrash, then this absolute ripper is going to be right up your street …" (Drako's Death Metal News & Reviews)
8,5 / 10 ➤ "... relentless sound ... powerful ... as an experienced disciple in the thrash metal universe, you can raise your eyebrows with enthusiasm ... the fire of Sepultura meets the groove of Pantera, mixes with the coldness of Sodom and Kreator and yet has a whole unique style of its own that makes SMORRAH stand out from the sometimes confusing swamp of releases ..." (Powermetal DE)
8 / 10 ➤ "... nine songs that kick ass ... mixture of Thrash Metal (musically), Death Metal (vocally) and a bit of Groove Metal (rhythmically) ... contemporary, no cheap Retro Thrash ... manage to inspire the old and the new generation alike ... the production is mega fat and bangs ... a successful debut!" (Crossfire)
8 / 10 ➤ "... skilfully combine the qualities of bands like Sodom (also based in Gelsenkirchen), Sepultura and Pantera. Of course, one or two riffs sound very familiar, but otherwise they sound very independent. Good and varied songwriting. Good debut album. If you like your thrash metal varied and don't just like thrashing speed, you can pick this up without hesitation." (Time For Metal)
3,5 / 5 ➤ "Get ready to bang your head nonstop while raising your horns … old school, 80’s-infused Thrash Metal extravaganza spearheaded by classic riffs … Marius deeply vociferating like a demented beast … unstoppable, violent sounds brought into being while also alternating between more melodic moments and pure savagery …" (The Headbanging Moose)
➤ "... steely inferno ... relentless heaviness ... brute energy and gritty riffs create an atmosphere that is honest, hard and uncompromising ... debut album that perfectly epitomises the heaviness of Thrash/Death Metal ... with menacing intensity reflected in every track ..." (BlattTurbo)
➤ "Do you like your Death Metal with rich elements of Thrash? And preferably with a bit of Groove throughout? Don't worry - SMORRAH is the answer to your prayers... hard, delivered with tremendous precision and still catchy in that cool way... 9 strong tracks... sure to have many hitting the repeat button, because you can just listen to it again... and again..." (Rancor Metalzine)
➤ "... technically high quality ... fast, melodic, groovy ... the guitars have great moments throughout the album ... it just fits ... sounds really cool ... vocals - my goodness where does the man get these sounds from - Marius' style is brutal, varied and simply ... SMORRAH's debut is a board before the Lord and an absolute buy recommendation ..." (MetalZone - Support The Underground)
➤ "... cool Groove Thrash ... really cool mixture ... not only on the cap ... but also great guitar work, also with nice warm parts ... really good ..." (Scream For Metal)
➤ "… unsettling and ferocious … uncompromising and at times groove laden … sounds less like a debut album and more like the work of a band that have been playing together for years, which bodes very well for the longevity of Metal …" (The Razor's Edge)
➤ "... Thrash Metal rocket that could have come straight from the Bay Area ... this thing rattles brutally and just waltzes over you ... it's a real mouthful ... awesome! Fans of the band will be delighted ... a brutally good album!" (Festivalstalker)
➤ "... killer ... strong Thrash album ... if you like Thrash metal, you will definitely like it ... a little underdog pearl ... I can only warmly recommend SMORRAH ..." (Moshpit Passion)
➤ "... finally ... leave you barely able to breathe ... the band's high energy and live performance make the entire 45-minute album an ideal headbanger. The best examples of this are 'Age Of Decay' or 'Buried Underneath' ..." (Hardrock LT)
➤ "...of high quality, with thoughtful songs in a style that pushes technique and groove in equal measure, with enough energy and speed for my needs and yet with a more open approach to arranging where there is room for different tempos and atmospheres. Solid!" (Cvecezla)
➤ "Each song on the album offers a different experience, showcasing different essences that intermingle between the Thrash and Death base … demonstrates their ability to navigate a wide range of emotions and sounds within Metal … agonizing vocal performance … excellent instrumental execution … offering a very personal sound … an intense debut that will not disappoint you." (TNT Radio Rock)

Every Cancelled Megaman Game [YT Script]
INTRO
Today we’re going to be looking into the cancelled games of Megaman, we’ll explore the Megaman MMO that almost came to fruition, or the long awaited fourth sequel in the Legends series.. but first, we’ll start with a brawler that never came to be…
Capcom Super League Online
Capcom Super League Online, known as Capsule for short, was a mobile game set to be developed by the Korean studio Kakao Games. It’s reported to have had a similar basis to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros’, in that the game would feature a bunch of different iconic characters from Capcom’s various franchises. Some of these franchises included Street Fighter, Ace Attorney, Resident Evil, and of course, Megaman. From the Megaman games, players would have been able to assemble Megaman, Rush, Roll, Forte, Blues, Sigma, AND! Zero as part of their hero ensemble.
Rather than being side-on fighter like Smash Bros’, Super League was described as being a ‘hero strategy RPG’ with others comparing the style closer to a tactical action RPG. It was based on a grid-like movement system with turn based combat that was typical of the genre, but would also include breakaway mini-games when not in the midst of action.
The game would enter four days of Beta testing in October of 2018, but unfortunately was cancelled six months later.
Maverick Hunter
Maverick Hunter was set to dive into a darker perspective within the Megaman X series. The project was codenamed Maverick Hunter during its six month stint in development until it was cancelled in 2010. Megaman fans didn’t even know of its existence until three years later, in April 2013, when Polygon posted a lengthy article on the cancelled game.
In development with Armature Studio, Maverick Hunter was going to be a modern take on the tried and true series. It was being developed as a first person shooter, while retaining the qualities, and concepts of the Megaman X series. It’s reported that the classic traversal mechanics in the platformer was going to be reimagined, including the dash, wall jump, and combat mechanics, like the arm cannon.
Story-wise, the game was planned to be a trilogy, with the trio of games encompassing a continuous story of a playable Zero who would be forced to destroy X, who had amassed significant power, and intelligence by the end of the games. Since its cancellations, various art pieces have been leaked by team members from its short time in development, including a metallic character design by Adi Granov.
Megaman Legends 3 - Rockman Dash 3
The sequel to Megaman Legends 2 was tragically, and mysteriously cancelled when a message in the summer of 2011 was posted by the dev team told fans of its fate.
The team had created a website, called the Devroom, in order to keep Megaman fans updated, and also involved throughout the development process of Legends 3. On the website, the devs held various community art competitions, polls, and idea suggestion events. This led to the news of the cancellation hitting the Megaman community with much disappointment, not least because of other Megaman cancellations also happening not long before. This led to fans voicing their opinions with an organised campaign in an attempt to persuade Capcom to continue development, but in a bittersweet twist, the 3DS would only be graced with the prototype version that Capcom released in order to generate hype for the game. Some details from Capcom have hinted at why the cancellation happened, with the European Capcom Twitter claiming that not as many people took part in the devroom website, leading the devs to believe that there wasn’t much interest in the game.
Many Megaman fans still after all this time haven’t given up hope, and are hoping for a sequel to the Legends series in the future.
Megaman Mania
In 2004, around the time of the release of Megaman’s Anniversary Collection, a gameboy advance game was set to be released alongside it. Reported to be a compilation of the five gameboy exclusive Megaman World games, it would have been re-colourised for the gameboy advance, and had added features, on top of all the content of the originals.
Some rumours came up about this games cancellation, and it was thought that Capcom had lost some of the source code from the original games, and what would have been a relatively simple job meant that the teams were having to redo assets and animations from scratch, yet others say it was cancelled for reasons far more “stupid” than that. Though much of this is speculation, it was suggested that Capcom had internally planned it to be released for the DS instead, but eventually it was confirmed to be 100% cancelled. Just a few screenshots and early advertisements for the game are all that remains.
Megaman Star Force 4
Capcom didn’t do as well as they had hoped after the release of Star Force 3, which led to the unfortunate cancellation of its sequel. Its story was going to focus on an older version of the main protagonist of the series Geo Stelar, alongside a brand new character named Kazuma. They would become outlaws after some hacking exploits where they end up being wanted by Satella police for 8 million Zenny for each of them respectively.
Hacking mechanics would have taken a large role in the games mechanics, similar to the way Noise worked in Star Force 3.
More mature in tone, Megaman Star Force 4 was due to be aimed at older audiences, and was only discovered to have been in development in 2019, when an old piece of concept art by team member Shinsuke Komaki depicted Geo, and Kazuma standing side by side. It surfaced on Rockman Corner, one of the detailed Megaman archival fansites.
Megaman Universe
There’s a reason as to why many Megaman games were cancelled around 2010, and many nail it down to Keiji Inafune announcing his departure at Capcom. He started out as an artist and illustrator on the first Megaman game, and many subsequent instalments in the franchise. He also ended up in more senior roles acting as a producer. After 23 years, he left Capcom, and with that came some game cancellations, including Megaman Universe.
It was going to be based on the gamplay of Megaman 2, but would involve players being able to construct their own Megaman suit by assembling his various parts. The game was shown to keen eyes at PAX in 2010, and was going to release on the Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. It demonstrated the various characters that players could utilise, even hinting that Ryu from Street Fighter might make a crossover appearance. Another standout feature from this game would have made use of the consoles’ online networks at the time, and had a level editor for users to create their own levels and share them online. Along with the departure of Inafune, the Capcom and Megaman mainstay, Japan also experienced a terrible earthquake and tsunami prior to release, and its speculated that this may have cause irreparable damage to development of the game. It was officially cancelled on March 31st 2011.
Megaman ZXC
A third release in the Megaman ZX series was unknown until a panel of former Capcom employees who worked for studio called Inti Creates, the developer of the ZX Megaman series, discussed that ZXC was in development. The team were talking whilst playing through Megaman 9 when they mentioned that the player character gameplay felt so smooth, and that they had actually used the character assets from ZXC and ported them for Megaman 9 halfway through development on ZXC. After this, they suddenly went quiet on the topic and agreed that it’s likely not their place to talk about the cancelled games, while comedically mentioning that those who cancelled the game likely don’t even work at Capcom anymore, saying to complain to Capcom about the cancellation and not them, just after namedropping Inafune-san. Prior to this, in Japan, there HAD actually been rumours of another ZX game titled ZX Cradle with the conversation on stream seeming to confirm these rumours.
Rockman Online
Back to Korea, and this co-developed project by Capcom, and studio Neowiz Games was going to be an MMORPG set in the Megaman world.
The story was set several years after the X series of games, with its plot being summarised in two released animated story trailers. In the years after being cancelled, Rockman Online would see a barrage of leaked art, and designs from the team as far back as 2007, four whole years before the games announcement in 2010.
The game would feature two factions, and numerous playable characters, among four classes that would offer differing playstyles. Players would take part in battles in a large military facility named Fortress Gaia which was home to different environments like forest, and cityscapes.
The game was going to release a beta test to a competition winner as a marketing campaign to get players excited for release, but the winner of the competition sadly never received a reply from Capcom, or NeoWiz, which subsequently ended up undergoing an employee restructure, and so Rockman online was officially axed in 2013.
RockmanX Interactive
It’s the mid 90s… and Capcom begin work on a Megaman X spinoff, which is now known as Rockman X Interactive, going by Megaman’s Japanese name.
According to documents put up for auction in 2018, the designs were for the interactive movie Super Rockman Adventure, that released in 1988 for Playstation and Sega Saturn. What was interesting however, was the document depicting another interactive movie, named Rockman X Interactive. This led to speculation that the game was going to obviously be set in the X universe, and would have been a follow up to the 1988 movie-game.
Research conducted on Rockman Corner shows that strangely, work on the unreleased title had actually commenced a few years before Super Rockman Adventure had released. The documents detailed the plot, but nothing about why it may have been cancelled.
Rockman XZ Time Rift
Rockman ZX Time Rift was set to be developed by Chinese Studio NebulaJoy who had completed previous work localising the global version of Rockman X DiVE. If released, fans would have been treated to a crossover of the X and Zero series’ in the Megaman universe. Rockman Corner reported on a 19 second advertisement clip for the game which showed X and Zero commencing battle in what looks like a storage facility.
Only a single screenshot was leaked, and it showed classic sidescroller Megaman gameplay. The developers were releasing this for mobile platforms, and aimed for quality to be high, ambitiously aiming to match what would be out on consoles for the time of release around 2022.
An anonymous source told Rockman Corner that Capcom pulled the plug on this project due to the Devil May Cry: Pillars of Combat, also for mobile, underperformed to expectations. Although it doesn’t seem like we’ll be getting a release, more info may be coming soon according to Rockman Corner.
Wily & Right’s Rockboard: That’s Paradise Gameboy Port Wily & Right’s Rockboard is a business board game simulator that was released for the Famicom in 1993. It came out only in Japan, and featured gameplay similar to Monopoly, but utilising all things Rockman.  It turned out that a port of this game was in development for release on the Game Boy. The port would have been like-for-like, intended to play exactly as it did on the Famicom, but would have no colour, and would be reduced in its resolution.
Japanese company Dual were the developers on this project, but their work was shut down when Nintendo found that it did not conform to their strict guidelines that they place on 3rd party developments. Nintendo would perform checks known as “lotchecks” and halted Rockboard’s progress. Information about this port was found in Nintendo’s gigaleak in 2020.  [31 References Available on Request]

“Pakistan’s February 8th, 2024 Sham Elections” Under the Gun Point of the Corrupt to the Cores Army Generals, Election Commission, Politicians and Judges
Tumblr media
The One & Only AND The Legend of Legends: Imran Khan! Pakistan’s Most Popular Political Party PTI’s Most Popular Leader is in Jail Due to Bogus Politically Motivated Cases
A top Pakistani political party is subjected to a harsh crackdown ahead of national elections. Its members are harassed, abducted, and arrested. Media outlets are pressured not to cover any of the party’s activities, and critics of this repression are silenced. The party’s top leader is given a long jail sentence on the eve of the polls.
This was the situation for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in 2018. Today, the PML-N is contesting Pakistan’s Feb. 8 elections with no problems, and it is former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party that is receiving this treatment. Hundreds of PTI supporters have been arrested, the party’s top leadership is hollowed out, and the already-imprisoned Khan received three new sentences within 10 days of Thursday’s vote.
Thanks to court rulings, the PTI is reduced to fielding candidates as independents, who are denied the use of the party’s symbol (a cricket bat) on the ballot in a country with a 40 percent illiteracy rate. The PTI’s plight is an especially intense manifestation of a long-running pattern in Pakistan: The all-powerful military uses a range of tactics to shape the electoral environment in ways that weaken the parties it doesn’t want in power.
What has happened in the lead-up to the Feb. 8 elections is not new, but the backdrop it has played out against may be unique. The country is facing a convergence of acute crises: economic stress so severe that the upper classes are feeling the pinch, upsurges in terrorism, worsening border tensions, and dangerous levels of political polarization. Pakistanis’ pessimism about the economy, elections, and safety is at the highest levels in years.
“Pakistan on Edge As ‘Old Corrupt to their Cores Dynasties Vie For Power’ and Populist Imran Khan Languishes in Prison Due to Baseless Politically Motivated Cases”
The confrontation between Khan and the military leadership has been aggressive and sometimes violent. Khan blamed the military for orchestrating his ouster in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022. After being targeted in an assassination attempt that November, he escalated his campaign against the military establishment, leveling allegations against senior security officials and calling them out by name—practically unheard of from a former prime minister.
After Khan was arrested last May on corruption charges, protesters attacked military facilities, including the General Headquarters building. Rarely had political violence taken such direct aim at Pakistan’s military, which has long held a sacrosanct status. The military dramatically ramped up its crackdown against the PTI. In turn, public anger with the military surged, fueling a crisis of confidence that runs deep: Some military officers have reportedly faced discipline for retaining support for Khan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Social media has in part exacerbated this anger and polarization leading into the elections. PTI supporters have vented on online platforms, and some hard-liners have developed large followings by directing withering criticism at the military on social media. Many vocal PTI supporters have turned to anonymous accounts, fearing retaliation by a state that has restricted internet access during the party’s online campaign events. (The PTI cannot mobilize offline.)
The outcome of the elections on Thursday is unlikely to be stabilizing. The next government will probably be a weak and fractious coalition; if turnout is low, it will lack a strong mandate. The losers will bitterly reject the elections result, hardening public anger, especially among PTI supporters. Despite everything, Khan’s party is rallying its supporters with get-out-the-vote calls and contesting elections with independents on the ballot—but the cause is seemingly futile.
Keen to play a leading role in Pakistan’s economic recovery, the military is unlikely to retreat to the barracks after the elections. This could set the stage for a new crisis—especially if PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif, who sparred with the Army during his previous terms as prime minister, returns to power. Sharif’s relationship with the military has tended to blow hot and cold. Today, he is back in the military’s good graces: His experience likely makes the military think he can stabilize the economy—and he is a bitter rival of Khan.
Any fresh political tensions could distract policymakers from addressing critical social, economic, and security challenges, just as Khan’s confrontation with the military has. For many Pakistanis, these elections could be the latest sequel of a movie they prefer not to watch.

Is Riot Games better at producing musical hits than developing games?
Riot Games is a video game developer and publisher founded in September 2006, based in Los Angeles, California. In 2009 they launched League of Legends into the world, a MOBA that more than 10 years after its launch continues to be one of the most notable online video games of all time, with more than 124 million active players.
Tumblr media
I would bet anything that you have heard about LOL on some occasion, whether you are a video game connoisseur or not, it is almost impossible if you are a human being with the internet to ignore the existence of a video game with these characteristics. Even if we move to the professional field, the League of Legends league is considered the largest in terms of e-sports, with 12 leagues across different regions that converge into a world championship held every year.
Currently, League of Legends has led to the creation of other game modes and highly valued products, such as League of Legends: Wild Rift, for mobile devices, or Teamfights tactics, an auto battler based on the characters and regions of Lol, available for both computers and mobile devices.
Tumblr media
But enough about the game, let's get to the point of this post: Since League of Legends is a free game to download and play, the money has to come from somewhere. With more than 5,000 employees, including conceptual artists, 3D developers, programmers, music composers, etc. There is one department that has managed to bring together all the company's incredible skills and generate an effective means of income: The marketing department.
Between lines of quite particular and striking skins that encourage players to buy unique appearances for their favorite characters, or the various chests of random GACHA-style rewards that hook the weakest players of mind and wallet, Riot Games has been able to take advantage of them regular to internal purchases of their video game, but one day, the marketing department at Riot Games had an impressive idea.
Tumblr media
Regardless of the fact that it was not the first time that Riot made a fictitious band to promote the sale of its skins, there is no doubt that the first musical hit to break the previously known limits was POP STARS, for the K/DA skins, whose music video released in 2018, inspired by Korean pop culture, and featuring the voices of Madison Beer, Jaira Burns and (G)I-DLE, obtained 577 million views on YouTube.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Riot reapplied the formula the following year with the TRUE DAMAGE skin line, with its respective fictional band and song GIANTS, featuring the voices of Becky G, Keke Palmer, Duckwrth, Thitmose and Soyeon ((G)I-DLE) and a music video that referred to the most recent currents of pop and hip-hop, achieved 206 million views.
Riot has managed to maintain its formula efficiently over the years. Projects like K/DA ALL OUT (199 million views), World Cup songs like Legends Never Die (262 million views), Warriors (417 million views), or the opening song for the first series based on the lore of the game, Arcane, ENEMY, by Imagine Dragons (254 million views), have nothing to envy of the big hits of recent times in terms of the impact they generate.
Tumblr media
The latest musical project from Riot Games this 2023 shows us that if something works you should keep doing it. The boy band made up of game champions Ezreal, Sett, Yone, Aphelios, Kayn and K'sante: ¨Heartsteel¨ has released their single Paranoia, featuring the vocals of Bekhyun, Tobi lou, OZI and Cal Scruby. 1 month after the publication of the music video, it has already achieved 32 million views, and they are looking for more.
Tumblr media
Without a doubt, when Riot wants to launch a musical project, it puts all its resources and skills into doing so, achieving a huge impact not only on the most committed players, but also on people totally unrelated to the game who have found in these music videos a quality product.

Article: ‘The Most Powerful Woman in Gaming Wants to Make EA Loved Again’
Laura Miele is helping direct the company toward a future where it’s more attuned with consumers.
One of the first things Laura Miele did when she became chief studios officer of Electronic Arts Inc. three years ago was to gather 19 video game influencers in a conference room. “What do you want me to hear? Lay it on me,” she recalls asking them. “One guy sitting at the corner of the table, he just said, ‘I don’t understand why you don’t give players what they’re asking for.’ ”

One of the first things Laura Miele did when she became chief studios officer of Electronic Arts Inc. three years ago was to gather 19 video game influencers in a conference room. “What do you want me to hear? Lay it on me,” she recalls asking them. “One guy sitting at the corner of the table, he just said, ‘I don’t understand why you don’t give players what they’re asking for.’ ”
It’s something many gamers have wondered about EA for years. The $40 billion company, one of the biggest in gaming, is responsible for Battlefield, Madden NFL, and other megahit franchises. But many gamers have long seen EA as a necessary evil, resenting the direction in which it took some games and bristling at its aggressive attempts to extract money by charging extra for digital items in games that cost as much as $70 upfront. This dissatisfaction was no secret in 2018: Gamers spent their days filling up Reddit and other message boards with free advice for EA—but many felt its decision-makers weren’t listening.
EA’s leadership knows it has to improve that relationship, and Miele is a key player in its efforts to do so. Her focus group asked for new content for Star Wars Battlefront II and requested new types of games. Miele quickly assigned 70 people to the Battlefront development project, which dramatically improved its net promoter score, a measure of how likely people are to recommend the game. She also prompted EA to create a skateboarding game and committed to reintroducing its college football franchise, the two genres at the top of the influencers’ list.
In a sense, the guy at the meeting became a stand-in for all of EA’s long-suffering customers in Miele’s eyes. “I wanted to do right by this player,” she says.
As chief studios officer, Miele manages 6,000 staffers and thousands of contractors globally. She oversees EA’s 24 studios, where she makes personnel decisions and sets strategy, and she’s reshaped how the company uses analytics to create and market its games.
In the process she may have become the most powerful woman in gaming. In a 2019 International Game Developers Association survey, fewer than 30% of the more than 1,100 respondents were women, and few if any hold a more central role at such an important company. “It’s a tough place for a woman,” says Peter Moore, who was Miele’s boss when he was EA’s chief operating officer. “It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but she battled her way through.”
Proving good intentions is more important for EA than ever, as the business model of gaming continues to shift in ways that have the potential to alienate customers. Like its rivals, the company is increasing its focus on free-to-play games, making money through sales of digital products such as outfits and weapons for characters.
There are signs it’s succeeding. Apex Legends, EA’s free-to-play hero shooter game, has posted more than $1 billion in sales since it was first published in 2019, and it continues to grow. “The way to succeed with free-to-play games like that is to listen to and engage your customer base and earn their loyalty through incremental purchases,” says Doug Clinton, managing partner of the venture capital firm Loup Ventures, who says Miele deserves much of the credit for Apex Legends. “It feels like a proof point for her that the company is adapting well beyond traditional disk sales.”
Miele, 51, was born in San Francisco but grew up on the north shore of Lake Tahoe. She got her start in games—the kind that require a board—during family nights, when she pitted herself against her brother in Monopoly, Clue, Yahtzee, and backgammon. While attending the University of Nevada at Las Vegas, she worked at architectural companies. By the time she dropped out she’d moved on from receptionist positions to more senior roles, while gaining a reputation for organizing lunch-hour card games with her co-workers.
Miele landed a job as a project manager at Westwood Studios, a video game developer best known for Command and Conquer, in 1996. She eventually took over all marketing for its parent company, Virgin Interactive.
It wasn’t always a hospitable atmosphere: Miele remembers her colleagues expecting her to take notes at meetings, then clean up afterward. “That is just not something I would do today,” she says. “I adapted a lot because I was so passionate about what I was doing. I found my voice along the way.”
When EA acquired Westwood in 1998, she stayed on. At the time, the company did revenue forecasting by looking at sales data once a month and putting together spreadsheets by hand. Miele was tasked with developing more advanced analytics. She hired a group of data analysts, nicknamed “the Jedi,” and had them build EA’s first statistical regression models to examine sales trends, seasonality, and preorders. It took almost two years to put the system in place, but it overhauled the company’s business processes, and executives were soon using it to determine how to invest in advertising and promotions. “I loved how data and analytics can inform your judgment and your gut instinct,” Miele says.
Miele also decided to make one major break with EA’s existing business practices. In 2011 about 80% of game advertising budgets were spent on TV ads. But she saw how much time gamers spent online and decided to spend the bulk of the ad budget for Battlefield 3 on digital, downplaying other types of ads and cutting the TV ad budget to only 30%.
Messing around with the plan for Battlefield 3 was a good way to make people nervous. Miele remembers two executives calling her in for a meeting and demanding to know why they weren’t seeing billboards for the game as they drove in to the office. “It was scary for me, too, and I don’t blame our executives questioning me on that,” she says. But the game ended up being EA’s fastest-selling, moving more than 5 million copies in its first week. From that point, Miele’s marketing strategy became the standard for the company.
When EA signed a 10-year deal with Walt Disney Co. in 2013, Miele became Star Wars general manager. In 2014 she took over publishing operations, marketing, and other key areas, first in the North American region, then globally in 2016. At the time, the game industry was moving from physical disks to digital downloads, transforming its relationship with retail partners such as Walmart Inc. and Best Buy Co.
Miele was in charge of smoothing things over, explaining that EA would start competing with them for customers even as the retailers accounted for the largest portion of the revenue. “I never said to them, ‘Hey, see you later, we are moving on,’ ” she says. “It was, ‘How can we move forward together?’ ” EA began making physical cards with digital credits that its retail partners could sell at their stores, allowing them to share in the revenue from digital sales.
EA’s studios are spread around the globe, and Covid-19 altered Miele’s routine radically. “It was a very difficult year, and I’m really proud about how our company showed up,” she says. “I considered myself a wartime leader last year. You had to get in a bunker with everybody.”
Days became an endless progression of Zoom calls. To keep up with gamers, Miele started spending evenings listening to Clubhouse chats while answering work emails. Because she hasn’t been on the road, she’s also had more time to dine at home and play board games or Apex Legends and The Sims with her 16-year-old twins. As the pandemic retreats in the U.S., her schedule might change, but she still envisions providing more flexibility to her employees to work from home and office. “I do think we’re going to have a different work environment as we go forward,” she says.
Miele is itching to get back to the studio visits. She’s helping steer EA further toward smartphones. The company plans to release mobile versions of Apex Legends globally this year and spent $2.1 billion in April for Glu Mobile Inc., a mobile game publisher, while also preparing the next releases in its existing franchises. “I think the next Battlefield and the mobile shooter games, along with how successful the M&As come out will be key litmus tests of her management this year,” says Matt Kanterman, an analyst with Bloomberg Intelligence. “Her scope is clearly rising.”
