hi i'm rotating this moment from the deleted opening scene of the outsiders (1983) in my brain like a microwave for three reasons:

(1) the fact that johnny and darry are the ones who arrive last, meaning johnny was hanging out with the curtis brothers (or just darry and oh god the two of them hanging out makes me want to cry) and darry sticks with johnny until he sees what's happening (his little touch to johnny's arm before he runs to ponyboy KILLS me that's one of his little brothers your honor and he needs to make sure he's okay)

(2) the way johnny is frozen in place, considering that it was only just recently within the timeline that he was jumped. he's terrified, both for himself and for ponyboy, and he can't do anything but watch what happens. johnny looks like he wants to start running, but he just can't because his own trauma is coming back to him full force

(3) darry's look of absolute panic, fear, and anger all mixed together. he and johnny probably just ran over to see if a random greaser was being jumped, and if they needed help, but you can literally see it register on darry's face that it's ponyboy getting jumped.

(4) the way darry moves SO fast. he and johnny arrive, and as soon as darry processes that it's ponyboy getting hurt, he's running to his baby's side. he sees the socs, sees the rest of the gang taking care of them, and does not give them even a second glance before checking on ponyboy

in literal seconds in this deleted scene, we go past ponyboy's unreliable narrator perspective of who darry is, and we as the audience immediately understand darry, and exactly how much his little brothers mean to him.
