BIOGRAPHY
minjung was born in seoul, south korea to a mother and father who’s relationships was already on the rocks when she came along. the added stress of having a child pulled them further apart rather than pushed them together, so they decided to get a divorce when minjung was only 1 year old and her mother, lee sebin, moved the two of them to new york city in the united states. her parents’ relationship post-divorce was very civil, allowing minjung to have both parents be present in her life. her father, oh yoon soo, flew to new york often when she was a child to visit her and they video chatted every other week. her mom didn’t want to give her an english name when she moved and other kids found it hard to pronounce her name, so she began going by mj.
her mother married a well-off american businessman named scott miller when mj was 9. the new family got along very well with one another and there was no ill feelings between her parents in new york and her father in korea. she considered all three to be her parents. her mother and step father moved them to the upper east side and minjung began attending a private school throughout her schooling. she was living her best gossip girl life, eating lunch on the steps of the met as a junior and making friends with new york’s elite. there were times when she let the money and status get to her head, going on ridiculous sprees or causing trouble with her friends, but she grounded herself in her solo visits to korea to see her father. she spent several summer months and winter breaks with him, where she helped out around his apartment, spent time exploring the country and became minjung again. those adventures she went on with her dad reminded her that money wasn’t always needed to have a good time, it kept her (and her spending habits) in check. he even introduced her to a new love: books. but minjung’s visits stopped when he passed away during her senior year of high school due to a heart attack. her father left everything he owned to her, which turned out to be a hefty amount in savings he had built up to give to her upon completing college.
yoon soo’s death inspires her to become more independent from her mother and step father. she begins declining her allowance from them, working and planning for the future. it’s a slow process as she already agreed to attend new york university for college and major in business administration since her parents were paying her tuition. minjung secretly minors in literature and upon graduating from university, she surprises them by announcing she is moving back to south korea to open up a bookstore with her inheritance money. as much as she loved new york, minjung wanted to start the next chapter of her life, completely away from her parents influence. minjung wanted to see what it was like living on her own in a new city and doing things by herself. with the rising popularity of hwaryung, it seemed like the perfect city for her to start her story. and so, minjung packs up the essentials of her things and makes the move.
minjung currently lives alone in an apartment in daeryungdong. she owns a bookstore called “page turner” that is located in maindong and has a vintage, 1970s vibe.
