Taking Sparkling Eno As Strategy (Again) Another Eclectic Tribute to Brian Eno
On the occasion of his 76th birthday, Wub-Fur Internet Radio once again pays tribute to Mr. Brian Eno with another collection of sparkling cover versions of his songs, recorded by an eclectic selection of artists between 1982 and 2021. Featuring the obliquely strategic talents of Queens of the Stone Age, The Feelies, St. Vincent, Jason Falkner, Chrome, Nouvelle Vague, Birdsongs of the Mesozoic, Game Theory, Brand X, and a half dozen more artists who know but don’t let it show.
▶︎🎶 Listen on Mixcloud
Running Time: 1 hour, 5 seconds
Tracklist

Needles in the Camel's Eye (3:20) — Queens of the Stone Age | Palm Desert, CA | 2007

Long time listeners (and perspicacious newer ones) have no doubt already noted that this mix is a sequel to our previous Eno covers tribute, originally aired in July of 2016 and then updated and revised for Brian's 69th birthday back in 2017, which can be heard here.

The Isolation Tapes Part 12 - I heard it on the radio, Vol 9
I'm not sure how many more of these I will end up making... I mean, I will still be aimlessly throwing my mediocre mixtapes in to the online void, but the whole 'Isolation Tapes' thing as a title is pretty much redundant now. I will still be playing my favourite tracks I've heard, or artists I've been introduced to, from BBC6Music's playlist though, as they still consistently play the best selection of music around. As always, a mix of jazz, breaks, soundscapes, hip-hop, funk, blues, electronica, and a few others that really don't fit in to any discernible mould. But yeah might do one more after this to round off on an even number, but feel the need for a change soon.... Dunno' why I'm writing all this shit though; just press play and get on with it yeah?

If you're reading this, it means that you made it out of 2024.  Happy New Year and welcome to Camp Lo-Fi.  I hope and pray that you will be able to experience peaceful moments and great music throughout this year.  I pulled this episode together as 2024 was coming to a close, making this the first sonic statement for Radio BSOTS in 2025.  To kick off a new year of the podcast, this episode and the next episode will focus on my participation in the Netlabel Day Radio live stream marathon that took place in July of last year.  I initially recorded a 30-minute test run for the stream and figured that I should share that with the listeners.
I gathered together some Creative Commons tunes from indie labels that ended up releasing later works under full copyright as time went on, but are still imprints that I hold in high regard (namely Tokyo Dawn, Budabeats, and Error Broadcast).  All cuts played during the test run can still be found online via Jamendo, Bandcamp, and the Free Music Archive.  This set of music leans heavy on the sounds of international beat culture, particularly that first decade of the early 2000s where the lines between electronic music and hip-hop production got blurry (and for the better, in my opinion).  Selections from Comfort Fit, Suhov, Bluntspeakers, and Apes On Tapes are probably the best examples of this.
Outside of the test run, the show opens with a selection in honor of ccMixter turning 20 years old (featuring the voice of Madam Snowflake - check out this video for a snapshot of her artistic journey) and closes with an addictive head-nodding joint from Fields Ohio.  I also get to share some listener feedback this time around.  As a bonus, I couldn't let the episode end without the words and voice of the late, great Nikki Giovanni.  As always, I welcome your interaction and hope that there are some selections within this installment of the podcast that grab your attention and increase your curiosity about other gems that can be found within the world of Creative Commons licensed music.
Theme music by Cy Tru (edited by Macedonia).  Background music by Techniken Defunkus.  ID drops from Morganics and Jonny Sonic.

What is a DJ?
A DJ (Disc Jockey) is an individual who plays recorded music for an audience. DJs select and mix tracks to create a seamless flow of music, often tailoring their sets to suit the mood of the venue and the preferences of the audience. DJs can perform in various settings, including nightclubs, festivals, radio stations, and private events.
Standard Definition of a DJ
A DJ typically:
Selects Music: Chooses tracks from various genres to play.
Mixes Music: Blends tracks together to create a continuous flow of music.
Reads the Crowd: Adjusts the music selection based on audience response.
Uses Equipment: Operates turntables, mixers, CDJs, or DJ software to play and manipulate music.
Becoming a Successful DJ
1. Ethics of Hard Work, Study, and Perseverance
Passion and Dedication: Have a genuine love for music and a strong desire to share it with others.
Consistent Practice: Spend regular time practicing your mixing skills, experimenting with new techniques, and staying updated with the latest music.
Continuous Learning: Study music theory, DJ techniques, and the latest trends in the music industry. Attend workshops, take online courses, and learn from experienced DJs.
Networking: Build connections with other DJs, producers, event organizers, and music enthusiasts. Networking can open opportunities for gigs and collaborations.
Professionalism: Be reliable, punctual, and professional in all your dealings. Treat every gig, no matter how small, with the same level of importance and commitment.
2. Technical Skills and Knowledge
Learn the Basics: Understand the fundamental techniques of DJing, such as beatmatching, phrasing, and EQing.
Master Your Equipment: Whether you use turntables, CDJs, or DJ software, become proficient in your chosen equipment. Learn the ins and outs of your gear to maximize its potential.
Music Library: Build a diverse and well-organized music library. Know your tracks well, so you can quickly find and play the right song at the right time.
Mixing Techniques: Develop skills in different mixing techniques such as blending, cutting, scratching, and using effects.
3. Mixing Different Genres
Understand Genre Characteristics: Learn the defining features of different genres, including tempo, rhythm, structure, and energy levels.
Create Smooth Transitions: When mixing genres, aim for smooth transitions. Use techniques like key matching, beatmatching, and EQ adjustments to blend tracks seamlessly.
Experiment with Mashups: Create mashups by layering vocals from one genre over the instrumental of another. This can create unique and exciting blends.
Use Effects and Loops: Incorporate effects, loops, and samples to enhance your mixes and make transitions more interesting.
Read the Crowd: Pay attention to the audience’s reactions and be ready to switch genres to maintain energy and engagement.
4. Building Your Brand
Develop a Unique Style: Find your unique sound and style. This will help you stand out and attract a dedicated audience.
Create a Brand Identity: Design a logo, choose a stage name, and develop a consistent visual identity for your social media and promotional materials.
Promote Yourself: Use social media platforms, create mixes and upload them to sites like SoundCloud and Mixcloud, and engage with your audience online.
Perform Live: Gain experience by performing at local clubs, bars, and events. Live performances help you build a following and improve your skills in front of an audience.
Resources and Tools
DJ Courses: Websites like DJ TechTools, Point Blank Music School, and Digital DJ Tips offer comprehensive courses for aspiring DJs.
Books: "How to DJ Right: The Art and Science of Playing Records" by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster, and "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton.
Software: Popular DJ software includes Serato DJ, Traktor Pro, and Rekordbox.
Hardware: Familiarize yourself with different DJ controllers, mixers, and turntables. Brands like Pioneer DJ, Numark, and Denon DJ are well-regarded.
By combining technical skills, continuous learning, networking, and a strong work ethic, you can become a successful DJ capable of mixing different genres and captivating diverse audiences.

20 Years of Remark Back to Mine. from Remark on Vimeo.
Two decades ago, I began experimenting with creating and curating continuous, non-dance soundscapes. I have a deep passion for ambient, new age, shoegaze, alternative, and post-rock music and was inspired to combine these elements into ornate aural narratives. I named the project Remark Back to Mine after the popular series of the same name.
To celebrate 20 years of Back to Mine, I am finally releasing the 23rd soundscape, titled “Ataraxia”. Defined as "a state of serene calmness”, this 5-hour journey transcends you into another dimension, free from this sad, painful world, where you can lose yourself entirely in the euphony of the universe. Experience the mix now exclusively via Soundcloud and Mixcloud. In addition, I’ve added five unreleased sessions from the archive to the Back to Mine playlist. “Existed”, “London”, “Couleurs”, “Hopelost”, and “Virtue” all explore a collection of emotions — from despair to heartbreak, indifference to excitement, inspiration to friendship.
Remark Back to Mine sessions reveal some of my most intimate sound selections and are engineered to provoke thought, reflection, emotion, and introspection. Most of these melodic contours are responses to chapters in my life: moving to a new country, best friendship, reactions to the world, heartbreak, contemplating life, equanimity, and falling in love. The sessions tell stories and explore the twists and turns of life — an intimate wander in subliminal emotion, a snapshot in time, a soundtrack to the soul. They often venture from the conscious to the unconscious. Sometimes peaceful, sometimes calming, sometimes mysterious, sometimes rocking. Explore twenty years of these curated soundscapes by listening to the Remark Back to Mine playlist now on Soundcloud and Mixcloud…and enjoy the ride.

De Algemene Verwarring #101 - 13 November 2023
Episode one hundred and one of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, November 13, 2023, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below are De Portables, the Belgian band from Bruges that played its very last show last Friday. They existed for about 27 years and have always been a part of my musical life. Unfortunately that last show was on the same day as the first day of the Sonic City festival here in Kortrijk, so I missed it, but I've seen them numerous times in the past and I've always thought that they would be around for ever. There are only a few bands like that, the ones that have been around all your life and that you assume will be there forever. Sonic Youth was one of those bands, The Ex is still one of those bands, The Cure is one of those bands, and De Portables was one of those bands. I'm quite sure that there will be more musical output from the different band members (I mean, for instance, listen to Wio's excellent Disintegration cover album), but still, this is the end of a musical era. And there are not a lot of Belgian bands with the same legacy as De Portables. I already played on of their excellent cover songs in the previous episode, and this time I'm playing the opening and title track of their album "Rosegarden". Thank you for the music!
This whole episode has a post festival vibe, there's only one very loud track, there's a lot of slow long tracks, a few drones, and a bit of krautrock. Bands in this episode include The Shifters, Sex Church, Stereolab, Lungfish, PJ Harvey, Hydroplane, Ordeal, K-Group, and a new Blod track to open the show. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for the show. Enjoy!

A Step-By-Step Guide to Uploading Your Track Without a Distributor
The music industry is evolving rapidly, allowing independent artists to take control of their music distribution. Traditionally, musicians have relied on platforms like Delivermytune, TuneCore, or CD Baby to get their songs on streaming services. However, many artists are now looking for ways to submit your track on all streaming platforms without a distributor to retain full control over their work, keep 100% of their royalties, and avoid unnecessary fees.
While most major platforms still prefer working with distributors, there are ways to bypass them and get your music out to a global audience. In this guide, we will break down a step-by-step process to upload your music independently, ensuring that you maximize your reach without sacrificing ownership.
1. Understanding Why Artists Choose to Bypass Distributors
Many independent artists are moving away from traditional distributors for various reasons.
1.1 Avoiding Subscription Fees and Revenue Splits
Most distribution services charge a monthly or yearly fee, and some even take a percentage of your earnings. If you’re an artist releasing multiple tracks per year, these costs can add up quickly. By skipping the middleman, you can keep all your streaming revenue.
1.2 Retaining Full Ownership of Your Music
Some distributors have clauses that allow them to own part of your rights or take control over licensing. Uploading directly ensures that you own 100% of your master recordings and royalties.
1.3 Faster Upload Process
With distributors, you often have to wait several days or weeks before your music appears on platforms. When uploading independently, you can release music instantly or on your own schedule.
2. Choosing Platforms That Allow Direct Uploads
Not all streaming services allow artists to upload music without a distributor. However, several platforms provide direct upload options, allowing you to release your music independently.
2.1 SoundCloud – The Best Option for Independent Artists
SoundCloud allows artists to upload music without a distributor and even offers monetization through SoundCloud Premier. If you meet their criteria, you can earn from streams just like on Spotify and Apple Music.
2.2 Audiomack – Free Monetization and Global Reach
Audiomack is a rising platform that lets artists upload and distribute their music for free. Unlike SoundCloud, Audiomack automatically monetizes your content once it gains traction.
2.3 Bandcamp – Sell Your Music Directly to Fans
Bandcamp is ideal for independent artists because it allows direct sales, full control over pricing, and a community-based model where fans support their favorite musicians.
2.4 YouTube Music – The Overlooked Giant
Many artists forget that YouTube Music allows independent uploads. By simply uploading a track to YouTube, you can distribute your song through YouTube Music’s catalog.
2.5 MixCloud – Best for DJs and Mix Artists
If you create DJ mixes or long-form music content, MixCloud allows direct uploads and monetization without needing a distributor.
3. Preparing Your Music for Upload
Before uploading your track, ensure that you meet technical and legal requirements.
3.1 Choose the Right Audio Format
Most platforms require high-quality audio files, usually in WAV or FLAC format, to ensure the best sound quality.
3.2 Add Proper Metadata
Metadata includes:
Song Title
Artist Name
Album Name (if applicable)
Release Date
Genre
3.3 Copyright Considerations
If you use samples, beats, or collaborations, ensure that you have legal rights to distribute the song.
4. Uploading Your Track to Streaming Platforms
4.1 Creating an Artist Profile
Most platforms require an artist account before you can upload music. Sign up and verify your profile.
4.2 Uploading Your Music File
Once logged in, navigate to the upload section, select your audio file, and enter the required metadata.
4.3 Adding Album Artwork
Your cover art should be at least 1400 x 1400 pixels and follow each platform’s guidelines.
4.4 Setting the Release Date
Some platforms allow scheduled releases, while others publish your track immediately.
4.5 Enabling Monetization (If Available)
If you are using SoundCloud Premier or Audiomack, enable monetization options before publishing.
5. Promoting Your Music After Uploading
Once your track is live, the next step is promotion. Without a distributor, you need to work harder to market your song effectively.
5.1 Leverage Social Media
Use platforms like Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook to promote your release.
5.2 Submit Your Music to Playlists
Even if you don’t use a distributor, you can submit your track to independent curators for playlist consideration.
5.3 Encourage Fans to Share
Ask your audience to share your song, tag you in posts, and create engagement around your release.
5.4 Utilize YouTube & Lyric Videos
Upload a lyric video or a visualizer to YouTube to expand your reach.
6. Tracking Your Performance and Earnings
Even without a distributor, you can track your music’s performance and revenue.
6.1 Using Analytics Tools
Most platforms provide analytics, showing:
Play count
Listener demographics
Engagement metrics
6.2 Monetization Reports
If you’re using SoundCloud Premier, Audiomack, or Bandcamp, check your earnings dashboard regularly.
7. The Pros and Cons of Skipping Distributors
7.1 Pros
✅ Keep 100% of your earnings ✅ Full control over release dates ✅ Avoid monthly or yearly fees
7.2 Cons
❌ Limited reach – Some platforms require a distributor ❌ More effort required – You handle everything yourself ❌ No automated royalty collection
Conclusion
While most artists still rely on distributors, you don’t necessarily need one to get your music on major streaming platforms. By using SoundCloud, Audiomack, Bandcamp, YouTube Music, and MixCloud, you can submit your track on all streaming platforms without a distributor and retain full control over your music.
The process requires more effort, but the rewards include higher earnings, total ownership, and the ability to release music on your own terms. Are you ready to take the independent route and distribute your music without a middleman? If so, start by uploading your next track today! 🚀

COMING UP ON MIXCLOUD THIS JANUARY
Here's what's happening this January on my Mixcloud Profile.
I'll be sharing both of my DJ sets from the first Graeme Park & Friends at Steelyard Kelham in Sheffield from the 21st December. The first is a warm up set and that's available now with the second set to follow soon. That will be followed by my five hour set from New Years Eve at The Trading Rooms at The Peice Hall in Halifax, which really was a wonderful night. All three of these sets will be exclusively available to Mixcloud Select subscribers who also have access to my weekly Long Live House Extra DJ Mix which is an extended and uninterrupted mix of the first hour of my weekly Long Live House Radio Show with extra tracks, deeper cuts, exclusives and rare tunes not featured in the show.
Lots of you have asked about my DJ set in the Star & Garter at the FAC51 The Haçienda at the Warehouse Project in Manchester on the 7th December as well as my set with Mike Pickering in The Concourse on the same night. Both sets were recorded, but due to an agreement that the Warehouse Project have with Apple, both of these sets will be appearing first on Apple Music. Details will follow soon.
Going forward into 2025 I'll be posting regular Traxsource charts so you can get hold of the available tracks featured in my weekly Long Live House Radio Show for yourself. You can check out my 'New Year, New Chart' now.
I'll also continue to record and share my DJ sets from my forthcoming dates as well as remastered classic sets from the past 40 years too.
As always, keep up to date with all of my forthcoming DJ dates, Haçienda Classical and everythihg else I'm up to right here in my website, as well as my social media platforms too.
Thanks for your continued support and I hope to see you in a dancefloor soon!
