Well hello there. While I'm waiting for that breeches video I've been talking about to finally upload, here's
Bridgerton, Episode 4
Phew, half time!
If you've missed the other ones, the tag is Bridgerbore, btw.
Okay, so we start of with Dukey who's going home-ish because drama and heartbreak in the last episode. Stop pretending, nobody takes your pouting seriously! We all know it's twu wuv!
Erm. So, I know, I'm white and this is a delicate matter, but I gotta say I'm not super happy about the whole POC-justifying explanation here. I'd much rather have no explanation at all, it worked perfectly well in Merlin, and this is just as much historically inspired fantasy just with less magic, which I'm honestly quite upset about. I'd be far more okayer with the costumes and overall ugh-ness if there was magic.
But honestly, I'm not a fan of shoehorning that explanation in (it doesn't seem to come up in the books, either, where everyone is basically a baguette in terms of whiteness). The fact that the implications aren't discussed any further makes it even worse. We're talking about the British empire here, and while POC are apparently part of the society (but with more pressure, which... no, this is not how nobility works) the wealth and luxury of this age still stems from the exploitation of POC everywhere else. How isn't there a revolution going on? How is this not talked about? From all I see, Bridgerton is a fluffy, pastel, nice alternate version of the 1800s, and I don't get why anyone would put politics in there instead of just doing what TV tropes refers to as "colourblind casting" and be done with it. Either you do the alternate history thing thoroughly, or you just cast people for being pretty (and maybe good actors) instead of the idea the audience might have about a character's skin colour and have weird costumes and just roll with it.
Also the Queen's marriage seems to suck. I would have liked a deeper, more heartbreaking connection between George III and her, especially because I saw how my Grandmother suffered when she gradually lost my Grandfather to dementia, and it would have been a scene where we could see Charlotte as a person rather than a weird plot device in tafetta and bling, but no, she just seems as annoyed and bored and snappish as ever.
This is getting far too serious. Where's the snark?
We get some Tchaikovsky in the background, which is weird, tbh. Yes, I'm perfectly fine with them covering Top 40s hits and using waltzes from the 1950s, but I draw the line at something from the second half of the 19th century! It's not right! It screams its time of origin all over the place, and even worse, most of the characters would probably actually get to hear it later in their lives, it's not a decent anachronism, it just feels like bad research! This is serious business!
No really, where's the snark?
Oooh, I get it now. That was when I was really, really done with bingeing this show. Yes, I tried to get through as much of it as possible in one sitting. The notes read, in very shaky handwriting
I cannot possibly take more than that
in one day
, so let's continue a few days later when I felt like I could muster the courage to face it again.
So yes, I'm pretty sure this waltz is to young for this show.
Aww, look at that, flirting over cheese! I also like that one of the Featherington girls (I can't really tell the non-Pennys apart) has a suitor, they deserve nice things, too.
The musicians are a mood.
WTF with the hair and the strass. We don't like the strass. Make it go away.
I love Prince Freddy. The poor boy. It's doomed from the start!
Ah, Dukey (also at the ball, even though he was whining about things earlier) gets a heartbeat in the background, because twu wuv.
Middle Bridgerbro goes and meets with the Bohéme. I want more of that! That's finally interesting! That's my people! There's a cool bohemian lady with a pretty dress! People look interesting! Aaaah!
There's a random 18th century burlesque singer at this Regency ball, we need to talk about this. Oooh, it's Opera Girl! Cue Lord B turning into even more of an idiot while Ma Bridgerton tries to hook him up otherwise.
Of course Philippa (that's one of the Featherington Girls) can't possibly have anything nice. Thanks, Dad. You don't get to marry someone you like, that's the people across the street's thing! (by which I of course mean the Bridgertons, just in case anyone forgot the location layout here.)
Eloise is being weird to the housekeeper.
"Are you not supposed to be the smart one", the housekeeper retorts and I'm feeling it, followed by a "WTH, hero" about how servants are too busy to be Gossip Girl, you privileged prat. I think I actually snorted.
Penny gossips with Ducktail Colin, but he's more interested in Cousin, whose dress looks like it was made from the cheap curtains my ex best friend had in his first semester at uni, and God, I hate Daphne's kerchief.
Poor Prince Freddie is trying to propose to Protagonis Girl but of course there's Dukey in the background so she simply must run outside as dramatically as possible where he can find her as she equally dramatically rips the necklace Freddie gave her from her milky white throat. P&P-ish banter ensues. Yawn.
Dukey: * broods *
Daphne: * dramatically exits *
Dukey: * romantically follows her*, and oooh, snogging ensues, oooooh, instant second base, but Bridgerbro the Eldest (known also as Lord B) intervenes.
Lord B: "Marry her!"
Dukey: "I can't!"
Lord B: "Bitch!"
Dukey: "I can't!"
Lord B: "I want satisfaction!"
Me: "Don't we all"
Daphne: "You'd rather die than marry me?!"
(the fuck with her hair)
Middle Bridgerbro is still at the Bohéme-party, and still draws (naked people!). Gay vibes ensue, it's cute. This is Netflix after all, and it took four episodes to get some LGBTQ+ representation!
The Featherington's housekeeper looks a lot like O'Brien from Downton.
Cousin tells Penny about what a cutie Ducktail Colin is, also Penny's "night gown" is really cute (it's not a night gown. She's still wearing stays. It's also the only thing in the whole series that fits her well so far). Penny is super upset but gets interrupted by a hyperfocused Eloise. They fight, and Penny goes on about being mature and not being a "pretty Bridgerton", and that Eloise wouldn't understand. I get her, though, and really, having a perfect family and a "bad" family is such lazy writing.
Somber blah blah between Lord B and Daphne happens and Middle Bridgerbro gets dragged into it. He's informed that his life is pretty much over either way (either way being Lord B dying or being exiled for killing Dukey in the scheduled duel) because his oder bro basically just wants out of his duties. Sucks to be him.
Boxing Bro has to host a frustrated, possibly blueballed Dukey and offers himself up as a second for the duel.
Lord B goes and pleads with Opera Girl to get back with him (doooooon't) because of his little duelling plot and of course intercourse ensues. Girl, where's your self-respect?
Lord F comes into his dark study (we haven't seen much of him yet overall, he probably was too busy gambling) and hark, there's Lady F like the mafia boss I feel she should be, wo berates him about said gambling and that they're broke and how much he sucks. He starts crying, thumbs up for male vulnerability!, but it's kinda played for laughs via her awkward patting of him. Because of course (and I bet the late Daddy Bridgerton would never have lost his composure like that, but he didn't gamble, either, and these are the Featheringtons)
Lord B leaves Opera Girl for THE DUEL (I feel like this almost deserves a ™ by now).
We get gallopping horses! The drama! The panache! Daphne asks Ducktail Colin where it's going down because she wants to stop them, insert pandering feminist ranting about her choosing her own life but I don't really feel it and I wonde where her bangs go when she sleeps because her hair looks so different all of a sudden.
Lord B makes Middle Bridgerbro promise to care for Opera Girl in case he dies.
More gallopping horses! Daphne and her billowing cloak are pretty epic, to be honest, and there's Ducktail Colin on her heels. It's basically a family outing now!
Ugh, I like the seconds in this duel so much more. They should just off and go for a pint or something and leave Lord B and Dukey to their misery.
Duelling protocol ensues. Ten steps, blah blah, nice camera work, though.
Daphne full on rides into her brother's bullet, but she's fine (it would have been so dramatic, can you imagine? It would have been interesting!).
Oh no, they were seen (by her romantic rival, back when they had the dramatic make-outery in the park at the ball after the botched proposal. Sorry, Cressida is such a much better name than Daaaaphneeee. I have a RPG character called Cressida, I might be biased.), she's ruined if they don't marry!. and so she is basically emotionally blackmailing him into marrying her. But he can "never give [her] children!", and goes on how she deserves a household full of love like her family home because the Bridgertons are such a perfect family. God, they all annoy me so much.
Daphne ends the duel by saying that the Duke and her are to be married, with a pained facial expression, no less. I think I just wanna throw a pie in her face or something.
And that concludes Episode 4. That was a long one! Only four more to go! So this is
To be Continued!
Thank you for making it this far with me!

chemistry // part two
Tumblr media
pairings: teacher!dylan o'brien x student!reader.
warnings: besides cursing? none.
a/n: look finally decided to realease chapter number two? hahaha :) plus, I’d like to announce that I will be uploading every Saturday. well, the ones I can because university is a bitch. nonetheless, proceed to your reading.
word count: 2,6k+
part one
For some weird reason I was yet to figure out, because it was a lot unlike me, I woke up in an incredible good mood. Which could totally be related to the fact that today was the first sunny morning after weeks enduring grey skies, rain, thick coats and freezing temperatures. Not that I hated all of that, except I did; it made me feel depressed. Plus my hair looked awful.
Yawning tiredly, I stretched out, sitting on my bed. While doing so, my eyes fell to Karen’s sleeping figure all curled up like a ball underneath three sets of sheets on a mattress carefully placed on my carpeted floor. She had decided to stay over the night because we still needed to go over some flash cards to our Algebra exam, that happened to be today, after my mother’s delicious dinner. I wouldn’t be the one to blame her, Louisa Smith was definitely a good cook, which means her belly was probably too full for her to find the strength to leave.
A small laugh slipped past my lips as I got back to my feet, muscles still numb for the amount of hours I stayed in the same position. Either way, I was refreshed to have had, at least once and in a long while, a decent night of sleep; also, the recently made coffee scent alongside the, very likely, scrambled eggs, homemade buns and everything a hungry person could dream about got my stomach complaining, setting my destination to the kitchen room.
The lovely forty year old woman I called mum was humming happily to a song whilst, by smell, squeezing oranges to make my favourite juice. I understood she used cooking as a self defense mechanism to keep herself together; we were still struggling with our father’s departure. It was complicated to even bring up in conversations, so, eventually, we just sort of stopped. I was pretty sure she would get over it. She was the strongest person I had ever known, of course she would.
“Good morning.” I mumbled, hugging her tightly, feeling her tummy shake as the woman laughed. “And this smells great, by the way.”
“Good morning too, sweetheart. What got you up so early?” My mum quizzed, directing me one of her best soothing smiles. “Are you nervous about the test?”
“Yes, obviously.” Rolling my eyes, a tiny smirk curled my lips as I took place at the table. “But it’s not why I’m up. I actually have no idea, but I have this feeling today is going to be great.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re happy, baby girl.”
“I am too, mum, these past weeks haven’t been easy, exactly…”
“Yes, I am aware of that, but you know what? We’re in a much better place now.”
“I think so too.” Supporting my elbows on the table, I watched my mother’s tired traits. “I want you to be happy too, ma.”
“I’m going to be fine!” The older woman looked away, prohibiting me from spotting her probably glassy eyes. “Now eat, before-”
A pale seventeen year old walked inside wearing a ridiculous bright red nightshirt and a sleeping mask controlling the brown mess that her hair was. She smiled kindly to both of us.
“Mrs. Smith, if you were going to say ‘eat before the eating monster arrive’, that would have been a great advice.”
The three of us shared a laugh before reuniting at the already set kitchen table, everything in place so we could eat together; Karen stole to her plate two muffins, three little breads, a couple of bacon’s slices and eggs, obviously. My mum and I just gazed at her, trying to hold our chuckles back. For someone so small, my friend definitely had a huge appetite.
Once the fun moment was over, we conducted a rather great breakfast, discussing light matters and gossiping like three old friends would do. To be honest, while we chatted, I was in awe to see that my mother was indeed improving; you could tell she had no masks on this time. No pretending nor disguising to be okay. It was purely and merely her.
Yes, this surely was a sign that a great day was ahead of me.
About twenty minutes later, Karen and I went upstairs to get ourselves ready to go to school. Because it was still a lot early, each one of us took our time to enjoy a warm bath, to pick a nice outfit, fix our hairs, etc, etc. Standard girl stuff, I guess.
“So,” The brown haired girl questioned, brushing her hair and locking it up in a tight pony tail. “You haven’t mentioned your date with Mr. McHottie a single time. Aren’t you going to go?”
“It’s not a date!” I whined, putting on a colourful sundress that fell to the mid of my thighs. Her green eyes glanced at me in disbelief, a smug grin taking over her heart shaped face. “It’s not! This is a class. Strictly professional.”
“Yeah… I just don’t buy it.” Scoffing, she stood and straightened her grey skirt, which matched perfectly her white buttoned blouse, the blue cardigan and also her heels. “You wouldn’t be dressing so nicely if the inner you didn’t think this is more than a casual lecture.”
“You are crazy, Karen.” Shaking my head, I slipped in my normal tennis shoes and put on a jeans jacket, grabbing my already fixed backpack that was placed near my closet’s door. “Can I just be in a good mood for once? Not everything has to be about men, you know.”
“What are you implying?”
“I’m not implying anything, I’m just mentioning I’m happy. That’s all. And that it has nothing to do with Mr. O'Brien.”
“Fine, if you don’t want to talk about it, I won’t push it.” Karen sighed, collecting her bag as well. “But, seriously, who are you denying this for? Me or you?”
The girl left without giving me time to even come up with a proper answer. Of course she had point; Karen knew very well I had had a crush on him a while back, in the tenth grade. But it was over, I was just kid. Furthermore, I highly doubted Mr. O'Brien would even think about the possibility of being with student; he was way too professional for that to happen. Like, friends, I guess, but dating? Not in million years.
A final exhale escaped as I made my way downstairs; I sure as hell needn’t to convince anyone, nor myself, that nothing was happening, because, well, nothing was happening. He was just being nice. That’s all.
“What took you so long, darling?” My mother questioned as soon as I took my place on the front seat, putting my bag on my lap as I fastened my seat belt. “You look pale too.”
“I’m fine, I swear.” Gazing through the corner of my eye to the back row, I saw Karen shake her head, frowning at my response. “By the way, I might be running late today.”
“Why so?”
“Uh, my chemistry teacher, Mr. O'Brien, offered to help me catch up on the subject. He said I have been off lately.”
“Isn’t Mr. O'Brien the hot one?”
My cheeks quickly reached a scarlet tone as my eyes grew wide to her last sentence. Since when does my mother notice if people are hot or not? I was clearly shocked, yet, Williams broke the tension with a laugh, getting mum to do the same.
“Mum!”
“Just commenting, silly girl. You should see your face.” She stopped under a red sign, looking at me tenderly. “If he says so, I’m okay. Just don’t be so late, alright?”
“Got it.”
Connecting the white earbuds to my phone, I opened the Spotify app and swiftly drowned myself on Sofia Karlberg’s version of the song ‘Toxic’, wishing nothing but to distract myself of all the things that could lead me into thinking of my encounter later with a certain chemistry teacher.
As it turns out, the whole putting out of my mind my own human personification of a Greek God was incredibly hard. I mean, I tried, I really did, but his sinful honey eyes kept haunting me the entire course of my classes. Seriously, why couldn’t him be like my AP Calculus teacher: bald, pudgy and not at all attractive? It would make things a lot easier for me.
Biting my bottom lip to contain a frustrated sigh, I glared at Mrs. Ziemann, trying to focus on her interesting lecture about the end of World War I. She excitedly explained how wrecked both Italy and Germany were once it was over, especially the latter, with the cruel Treaty of Versailles. Oh, well, at least paying attention to that could allow me to forget I was only five minutes away from my meeting.
As the woman finished her presentation, I wrote down a few topics to look upon later when studying the subject, which I needed to do, because this good looking lady was known for her killer exams. On a side note? I may have cried myself after a couple of them.
“And this wraps up our class today.” She smiled solemnly, her pretty blue eyes locked on the back of the class where the lacrosse team was based. “Oh, wait, before you all go, I would like to inform I want, for next week, a paper on the tragic events at the end of World War I.”
This time I didn’t hold back a sigh, taking notes on my journal to do this assignment soon, for next week I also had, oh darn, a chemistry exam. Fate must really think my life is a big fat joke. That’s ought to be it.
I swiftly packed my stuff, placing a handle on my right shoulder and moving away from the class, only to find Karen leant against a wall outside, trying to look casual while chewing gum. Oh, yes, I had to solve this too.
“Please tell me you forgot about our little misunderstanding from earlier today.”
“I didn’t.” Her eyebrows were knitted together, her mouth forming a straight line. “But I’m willing to move past it if you promise to tell me the details of your “class” with Mr.McHottie.”
“You are such a gossiper!” I laughed, stopping at my locker to get my Chemistry book volume two. “I have been trying all day long to not think about it.”
“Let me guess: useless.”
“Damn right it was.”
“Well, he won’t bite you, at least.” The green eyed girl patted my back, a smirk plastered on her face. “Not unless you want to, I guess.”
“You are such a mean whore.” We both chuckled, our next stop being in front of Mr. O'Brien’s office, me knocking at the door twice. “And this is where I leave you, K.”
“Tell me the details!” She whispered, winking at me playfully. “I mean it!”
“Get out! Now!”
Williams raised her thumbs up to me, winking one last time then disappearing in the halls just before the brown haired man, also known as Greek God, also known as my chemistry teacher, opened the door. I certainly wasn’t ready to see him so loose, if that’s the correct term.
His hair was more disheveled than usual, the scruff still framing the beautiful pink lips, his white casual shirt had a button open, revealing an adorable puddle of chest hair, and his red tie was lying over his desk from what I could see. O'Brien directed me a comforting smirk, placing his rather large hand on my back, pulling me to get inside the room. One small comment so we can proceed: did he have a heater on or was it me that just suddenly grew warmer under his touch?
Gripping tighter on my hard covered book, I went forward to take seat on one of the first row’s places whilst he stayed behind to close the door. Okay, first minutes, still not weird. Maybe just a little bit. Why am I so tense?
“Are you okay, Smith?”
“Yes. I’m sorry, I’m just a little bit nervous…”
“You don’t have to be.” He smirked tenderly, pulling a chair to sit in front of me. “It’s just you and me, plus I won’t do anything to you.”
“Uh, people already think you-”
“Well, I seriously don’t mind what people think. You’re amazing, you know?” His eyes connected with mine for a while until he gazed down at his feet. “I meant as a student. That’s why I picked you to tutor.”
“Thank you, Mr. O'Brien, you are a wonderful teacher as well. I love your lectures so much!”
“That’s relieving, it would be pretty bad if my favourite student didn’t like them.” A small laugh slipped and, suddenly, all the nervousness was gone. “Should we start?”
“Yes, definitely.”
The following hour was simply incredible!
If him teaching to a whole class was good, having him as a mentor was even better. It was like he didn’t have to hold back nor maintain a straight face all the time. Plus the jokes? Damn, I could never have imagined he had such a great sense of humour. I mean, the man had gift on finding the right words to make me laugh like there was no tomorrow.
By the end of our time, I had not only gotten more confident on physical chemistry, but also met a side of my teacher I didn’t know previously. Mr. O'Brien, or Dylan, as he asked me to call him, was a sweet, caring guy. If the fifteen year old version of me had known this, she would be dead and buried now. God, I was a lame kid.
“It was nice being being with today.” He mumbled, nudging my shoulder with his and wearing the best smile in the whole wide world. “I’m glad we’ll be doing this for a few more weeks.”
“I’m glad too.” The watch on my wrist told me it was over six pm, which strictly meant my mum would be all over the place once I got home. “I should get going.”
“Wait, I-I…”
“Yes?”
“Oh, fuck it.”
Not thinking twice, he cupped my cheeks, pressing his perfectly shaped lips against mine in a sweet, tender kiss. At first I was surprised, however, as his tongue slowly licked stripe at my bottom lip, I melted away, surrendering to his touch. It was definitely nothing I could have ever dreamt about. The way his hands found the crook of my waist, how we moved in perfect sync… Everything felt like this was meant to be.
When air became necessary, we merely glued our foreheads together, gazes boring into one another. It wasn’t perfect, it wasn’t ideal, but, hell, I enjoyed this.
“I’m sorry, Y/N, we shouldn’t-”
I didn’t want to hear the rest, he wouldn’t pop my bubble so soon, therefore, I kissed him again, this time with much more passion and hunger. So strong we were left a heaving mess afterwards.
“You’re an amazing kisser too.” O'Brien whispered, making me giggle. “I mean it.”
“You are one crazy person, O'Brien.”
“I told you should call me Dylan.”
“As you wish, Mr. O'Brien.” Playfully winking at him, I stole another peck, earning a small smile from him. “This is crazy… I mean, someone could have seen us! Oh, fuck, what if one of the cleaning ladies saw us? You could lose your job! Shit!”
“Relax, nobody saw us.” His thumbs massaged my cheekbones, trying to sooth me. “But you can’t tell this to anyone, okay? Not even Miss Williams. Even though I don’t regret one bit, I could really lose my job if this comes out.”
“Of course I won’t tell anyone, it will be our little secret.”
“Deal.”
I hid my face on the crook of his neck, breathing in the intoxicating musk of his cologne. I couldn’t believe this was actually happening to me; I mean, it was too surreal. If it was a rumour about Briannah, I would have believed more, because, well, she did want to do it, but me? Nah, it was messed up. Nonetheless, it wasn’t less real. I was indeed within his arms. And, in that particular moment, I decided to not care about the consequences any longer.

An easy summer rustic tart that makes the most of ripe and juicy seasonal tomatoes. This tomato galette has a beautifully crisp and flaky pastry. It’s topped with a layer of basil pesto which is then covered in colourful cherry tomatoes. Delicious served either warm from the oven or cold next day.
Galettes are now my favourite form of tart to bake, be they savoury or sweet. They’re just so much easier to make than a classic tart or pie. There’s no need for any pre-cooking before the tart is assembled and goes into the oven. No tin is required either, which means less faffing about and less washing up – hooray!
What’s a Galette Anyway?
The word galette is a French noun derived from galet, which means pebble. It’s usually used to describe a form of flat round dough. This could be a cake, biscuit, crèpe, bread or pastry. These days, the term mostly refers to a rustic tart, as in this tomato galette, which you free-form into a round rather than shape in a tin. You may or may not fold the pastry up over the edges. In fact, I’ve sometimes made this particular galette as a completely open tart, as in the photo below.
As you can see, this tomato galette is easily adaptable. For this one, I didn’t use a rolling pin at all, just my hands. I also used a few less less tomatoes but added some spring onions. The Italians refer to this type of free-form tart as crostata.
Tomato Galette with Basil Pesto
In the summer months, I often make this rustic French inspired tomato tart. As tarts go, it’s a pretty easy one to make. It can be on the table from start to finish in less than an hour. It’s a good one to make for friends as, despite its rustic appearance, it has a wonderful aroma, looks really appealing and is absolutely delicious. We tend to enjoy it with a large serving of zingy green salad.
Tomatoes and basil are a classic pairing and there’s a good reason for it. They seem to both compliment and bring out the flavours of the other at the same time. They are paired all over the Mediterranean, but particularly so in France and Italy it seems. One of Italy’s most famous salads features tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. Here’s my version of it, Caprese salad bowl for one.
I’ve used wholemeal spelt pastry in this recipe. It’s delicious and always produces a gorgeous flaky result. But if you’re in a real rush or just can’t be bothered, use shop-bought pastry. Likewise homemade pesto is generally much nicer than the commercial stuff and it’s really easy to make. But again, sometimes life just gets in the way, so you can easily substitute bought pesto for homemade if you need to.

Roll out pastry.
Spread with a layer of pesto, leaving a centimetre or so clear around the border.
Top with halved cherry tomatoes.
Fold the edges up and over the tomatoes.
You’ll probably find it hard to resist finishing this tomato galette immediately; it’s especially good warm from the oven. However, any leftovers will perk up the morrow’s lunch box no end, so if you can muster up some restraint, it’ll be worth it.
Wholemeal Spelt Pastry
This pastry recipe is my absolute favourite homemade pastry. It’s easy to make, rolls well and produces a beautiful flaky crust. The secret to its success, is wholemeal spelt flour and yoghurt. The yoghurt binds the dough together, but keeps it light and the spelt gives a nutty and slightly sweet flavour. I’ve added some ground cayenne pepper to the pastry to give it a little additional oomph, but this is entirely optional.
Homemade Basil Pesto
The amount of pesto given in this recipe is more than you’ll need for the tomato galette. But it will keep in the fridge for a few days and you can use it in any number of ways. It’s perfect for pasta, of course, but it’s also delicious in sandwiches, forked through rice or quinoa, mixed into cooked vegetables or simply spread on crackers.
All you need to do, is add the pesto ingredients into a blender and whizz it into a paste. I used my power blender, the Optimum Vac2* for this pesto, but you can easily use a food processor instead.
Homegrown Tomatoes
We’ve managed to grow quite a few tomatoes this year and all of them outdoors. They’re the most delicious tomatoes I’ve had in a long time and we’ve saved them specifically for eating just as they are or in a salad. CT grew the cherry tomatoes, pictured below, at work. They’re also very good and are perfect for making this tomato galette.
Cherry tomatoes work particularly well in this type of tart. They’re small enough so that you can just cut them in half. And if you place them skin-side down, they’ll mostly contain their juice. On the other hand, you’d have to slice large tomatoes which would allow the juice to leek out all over the dough and the edges of the tin. This not only creates an awful mess, but it produces a wet and soggy dough.
For me, chilli and tomatoes are a match made in heaven, so I sprinkle a few chilli flakes over the top of this tomato galette. The same goes for this though as it does for the pastry, any chilli is entirely optional. Reduce or increase the amounts depending on how ‘hot’ you like your food.

Tomato Galette with Homemade Pesto – The Recipe
Tomato Galette with Homemade Pesto
Tumblr media
This easy summer rustic tart has a beautifully crisp and flaky pastry topped with a layer of basil pesto which is then covered in cherry tomatoes.
Pastry
250 g wholemeal spelt flour
150 g unsalted butter
pinch of sea salt
3 tbsp yoghurt
½ tsp ground cayenne pepper or chilli powder of choice ((optional))
Basil, Almond & Cheddar Pesto
50 g basil
50 g almonds
50 g mature cheddar cheese
1 clove garlic
1 pinch sea salt
50 ml extra virgin olive oil + a little for drizzling
35 cherry tomatoes – halved ((multi-coloured ones are fun))
½ tsp chilli flakes ((optional))
Pastry
Cut the cold butter into the flour, chilli and salt with a knife, then either rub between finger tips or pulse in a food processor until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Stir in the yoghurt with a knife until the mixture comes together into a ball.
If the dough is too soft to roll immediately, cover and leave to rest in the fridge or a cool place for ½ hr. I generally have a cool kitchen, so I tend to roll mine out straight away.
Roll out on a floured surface into a rough circle, about 4mm in thickness.
Place on a baking tray lined with baking parchment.
Basil, Almond & Cheddar Pesto
Blitz the basil, almonds, cheese, garlic and salt in a blender or food processor until roughly ground. I've been using my Optimum Vac2 blender* for this recently.
Add the olive oil and blitz again until you have a rough paste.
Spread a thin layer of pesto over the pastry leaving a border of about 1 cm.
Cover the pesto with the tomato halves cut side up, but leaving a border of about 1 cm from the pesto edge. Drizzle a little olive oil over the tomatoes and scatter the chilli flakes on top if using.
Fold the 2 cm edges inward over the filling, tucking the pastry in as you go. You should have a large (ish) open centre with the tomatoes shining out..
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200℃ (400℉, Gas 6) for about 25 minutes when the tomatoes should be cooked and the pastry crisp and golden.
Serves 6 – 8 people depending on how hungry they are and what you serve with the tart.
You will make more pesto than you need for this recipe. Place the unused pesto in a jar, pour over a thin layer of olive oil and seal. Will keep in the fridge for a week or so. But once opened, eat within three days.
Excellent served with a zingy green salad.
Please note: calories and other nutritional information are per serving. They’re approximate and will depend on serving size and exact ingredients used.

Below is just an example of a consent form.
Tumblr media
Artist bios-  Imagine Dragons is an American rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, consisting of lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, lead guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and drummer Daniel Platzman ( Source - wikipedia)
I will be using Imagine Dragons song On top of the world. I feel this song is very inspirational and empowers you to do something about your life. This song talks about taking chances and not missing out on life, because life keeps moving it will not wait for you. We’re living in a society where we don’t take time to form connections with the people around us- we forget that they aren’t always going to be around and we forget to tell them how much they mean to us. We’re busy looking at screen/device which is unconsciously controlling us. We cannot differentiate between the virtual world and reality. We try to gain as many followers or ‘friends’ on social media and flaunt how ‘amazing’ and ‘perfect’ our lives are. We will face many highs and lows in our lives but it’s up to us how we choose to deal with it- we could take the easy way out and quit and let society control and dehumanize us or we could fight back, take risks and show that we are not sheep following along what someone else said. Don’t be a copied version of someone else be original! This is the message I want to portray in my music video and I understand that my target audience will be able to relate and this would interest them. (sorry for rambling got too into it)
Lyrics:
If you love somebody Better tell them while they’re here ’cause They just may run away from you You’ll never know quite when, well Then again it just depends on How long of time is left for you I’ve had the highest mountains I’ve had the deepest rivers You can have it all but life keeps moving
Theme: Experiencing things and making/valuing connections with others. This would appeal to my target audience because teens have a natural fear of missing out and are obsessed with finding the latest trends, they can relate that they spend a lot of hours on their phone or electronics. I hope that after they view my music video they will think about how much time they spend on social media and realize that life is short and they are missing out on valuable bonding time with their peers and family. Also to encourage them to try new things and do the things that once scared them.
Technical elements and production visuals
Camera- video camera, go pro ( to get a point of view shot). I will most likely be using high angles (to make the character look powerless against technology), mid shots ( to show their expressions), long shot ( to show the area/surroundings and capture their body language.), tracking ( to show the characters movement- essential when the hooded character ‘interacts’ with the main).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lighting- The music video will be shot in black and white in the beginning and eventually colour will be added. I will mostly use natural lighting since we don’t have any fancy equipment. Possibly flashlights to imitate natural lighting or even high key lighting.
Pace- It will fast or medium, because the target audience is always on the move. Life just goes by so quickly.
Mood- I want my music video to give an uplifting/happy/positive vibe.
Editing- Slo-mo, when the phone drops (to make the audience feel anxious and tense because they’ve been in similar situations where they have dropped their phone and hoping that it doesn’t break) . Will play around with the focus and blurring certain scenes.
Tumblr media
Props:
Phone (Probably the most important prop in the music video- symbolizes control and imprisonment), ball (a kid will be playing with it- symbolizes fun and childhood), dog (symbolizes innocence and warmth and possibly freedom).
Tumblr media
Production Aesthetic
Casting-There will be a boy/girl, average teenager . I was thinking of using some of my fellow media studies students to play a role in my music video (with their permission of course). Hoodied/cap wearing stranger. Side characters an elderly woman, two children, and a man and woman. ( I had a dog listed as a cast/character but after discussing with my teacher about the role it played in my music video, I decided it would be more appropriate to be a prop).
Wardrobe- Main character - Plain t-shirt/singlet, shorts and a hoodie. I tried finding plain and gender neutral clothing. This will appeal to target audience because many teenagers wear clothes similar to these. Although they tend to wear brand clothing such Nike or Adidas, I didn’t post any of their products because I thought I might get in trouble for possibly copyright or something.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another possible outfit design for main character.

The best iPhone and iPad games in the world right now
How we scoffed when people suggested the iPhone would one day be a leading games platform. Had they not seen how rubbish mobile phone games were? Had they not noticed the iPhone was bereft of a D-pad and buttons? The fools!
Only things didn’t turn out as expected. Enterprising developers flipped everything on its head — shortcomings regarding tactile controls became benefits in terms of using new touch and tilt capabilities. Games became increasingly immersive as you interacted directly with content, ushering in new experiences through no longer being able to rely on traditional controls. And then the iPad did it all again – only bigger!
Today’s market is mired somewhat in freemium grindy hell, but gems nonetheless abound. Our list includes the very best premium and free titles the iPhone and iPad have to offer, handily grouped into sections, starting with racers, ending with arcade games, and taking in everything else you can imagine on the way.
If you’re not using your iOS devices for playing games, you’re missing out on some of the best titles mobile has to offer

Best racing game for iPhone and iPad: Need For Speed Most Wanted
Embedded video
Fortunately, Most Wanted’s gameplay isn’t nearly as grey as the tracks that you find yourself zooming along for street-racer glory. Fairhaven would be better named Greyandverydrabville, but the arcade racing you get up to is of the gloriously breezy kind found in the likes of Sega’s OutRun 2.
You find yourself hurling your car recklessly off of clifftops (having, naturally, crashed through an advertising hoarding first), drifting around bends, or smashing up the Fuzz, if they’re stupid enough to get in the way of your race-winning ambitions while partaking in high-octane thrills.
Download Need For Speed Most Wanted (£3.99)
AG Drive
Embedded video
Beaming in from the future, AG Drive is more or less Wipeout for your iOS device. It looks superb, gleaming metal tracks flinging you about like the most furious of rollercoasters, while a gorgeous sunset or fierce electrical zap threatens to distract your attention for a fraction of a second too long.
The game totally nails the sense of speed that sets futuristic racers apart from those based around cars on tarmac, and the controls don’t let you down as you hover and speed your way to glory.
Download AG Drive (£2.99)
Riptide GP: Renegade
Embedded video
In the world of Riptide GP: Renegade, it’s been raining quite a bit. Consequently, rather than cheeky scamps skidding about the place street-racer style, they scoot along on souped-up hydrojets, flinging their vehicles into the air whenever possible to perform show-off stunts, and trying hard not to drown when it all goes a bit wrong and they smack into a wall of water at stupid m.p.h.
This is a breezy old-school arcade racer, bouncing you about its undulating tracks and revelling in the ridiculous nature of it all. We could do without the naff storyline, and the visuals have dialled back the blazing blues of GP2 for grittier (i.e. drabber) fare. But if you fancy a quality adrenaline-fuelled and decidedly splashy racer, Renegade is hard to beat.
Download Riptide GP: Renegade (£2.29)
Reckless Racing 3
Embedded video
The original Reckless Racing was an amusingly ramshackle affair, with rickety trucks and cars screeching around car parks and scrapyards. The sequel added depth but also too much polish, losing the series’ sense of character.
This third entry gets the balance right, enabling you to power-slide through a wide range of settings, including an airport, a charming European hilltop village and, worryingly, an abandoned and very clearly leaking nuclear plant.
The physics is a bit light, and the AI a touch aggressive, but this is as fun a top-down racer as you’ll find on mobile. It also clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, adding a ‘gymkhana’ mode where you rack up points for ‘precision stunt driving’ in a beat-up old truck.

Asphalt 8
Embedded video
There’s a point where arcade racers lose all connection with reality and they’re all the better for it. Asphalt isn’t bothered by trivial concerns such as an actual car’s inability to fly hundreds of metres through the air, or drift seemingly endlessly around gloriously sweeping bends; instead, it’s all about the need for speed, zooming around beautifully rendered and inventive courses, occasionally smashing your rivals into a wall, just because you can.
It’s a touch shoppy and grindy, but there’s hours of exhilarating racing here without spending a penny.

The best sports game for iPhone and iPad: Super Stickman Golf 3
Embedded video
Super Stickman Golf 3’s ancestor is the same Apple II Artillery game Angry Birds has at its core, but Noodlecake’s title is a lot more fun than catapulting birds around.
It’s a larger-than-life side-on mini-golf extravaganza, with you thwacking balls about giant forests, space stations distinctly lacking in gravity, and strange fortresses with a suspiciously high deadly laser count.
The single-player game’s fun, but SSMG 3 comes into its own in multiplayer, whether you’re taking the more sedate turn-by-turn route or ball-smacking at speed in the frenetic race mode. Note that the free version has some restrictions (limited courses; fewer simultaneous turn-based games), but there’s still plenty of genuinely crazy golf here to take a swing at.
Download Super Stickman Golf 3 (£free)
Touchgrind Skate 2
Embedded video
This one takes a rather literal stance regarding controlling a sports game with your fingers. The board appears on the screen and your fingers become tiny legs, enabling you to perform gnarly and rad tricks, man! Irksome lingo aside, this is a fantastic title that’s initially demanding but hugely rewarding once mastered.
You can also upload videos of your best moves and show off to your friends, and there’s fortunately no way you can skin your knees, unless you trip over while obsessively performing ollies, powerslides and heelflips while walking down the street.

Magnetic Billiards
Embedded video
If you’re the kind of person who gets off on using cushions to pot the odd ball in pool, you’ll love Magnetic Billiards. A sort-of physics puzzler take on the popular pub game, it dispenses with pockets entirely — you instead clear the table by building clusters of connected balls that then vanish.
Emptying a table’s the easy part, though — the real skill is in figuring out insanely complex trick shots to get to that point, ‘buzzing’ balls of different colours, and creating a pleasing magnetic shape before it vanishes into the ether. For free, you get 20 tables; £1.49 nets you a ‘skeleton’ key that unlocks the rest of the game.

World Tour Golf
Embedded video
With EA having deserted ‘proper’ golf games on mobile for the arcadey nonsense of King of the Course, WGT thwacks a ball and gets a realism hole-in-one. This really is a quite astonishing game, from the delicate controls through to the eye-popping photo-realistic courses you play on.
A word of warning: it also takes no prisoners. There’s no nonchalantly spinning a ball in mid-air when you fluff a shot. Here, you’ll end up in the bunker, then overshoot the green, before multiple putts leave you embarrassingly over par. But put in the practice and you’ll be a virtual golfing superstar before long.

Strategy and word games
The best strategy and word game for iPhone and iPad: Mini Metro
Embedded video
For anyone immersed in the daily hell of a commute involving an underground, the notion of designing such a system – and for that to begin as a chill-out session – might seem unlikely. But Mini Metro is captivating from the first train you unleash.
It builds slowly. You connect a few stations by drawing a line, and passengers are ferried about, alighting at the first station that matches their shape. All along, your ears are serenaded by a tinkly generative soundtrack formed by the actions taking place on-screen.
The calm doesn’t last. As time passes, new passengers and stations appear, ramping up the tension and forcing you to juggle scant resources. Eventually, you’ll be overwhelmed and your subway will close. Still, a new one’s only a tap away. Just don’t lose yourself for too many hours in this minimal interactive underground.

Warbits
Embedded video
There’s no shortage of turn-based strategy titles on iOS, but Warbits is a cut above. It brings Advance Wars-style skirmishes to your iPhone or iPad, two factions duking it out on grid-based maps, lobbing projectiles at each other until one side emerges victorious.
The game is infused with quirky humour, and it fizzes with an energy its more staid competition would do well to ape. Warbits also has plenty of longevity — work your way through the tough single-player campaign, and you’ll be hardened enough to venture online. There, you can take on other virtual warmongers across a range of arenas, or rope in the computer AI if you feel the need to (try and) give it another kicking.

SpellTower
Embedded video
At first, SpellTower seems very simple and innocuous. You get a tower of letters, and drag out words. Tiles disappear and gravity reminds any floating tiles they should perhaps consider obeying natural phenomenon. Rinse and repeat.
But then you unlock Puzzle Mode, where every word you clear adds another row of letters. Finally, Rush Mode showcases the title’s devious streak, a timer relentlessly ticking, rapidly adding new rows of tiles, many of which come badged with numbers denoting the minimum letters a word needs in order to remove them. It’s a far cry from SpellTower’s sedate beginnings, and a perfect mash-up of word games and well-based puzzlers.

Clash Royale
Embedded video
This mash-up of RTS and card collecting has you battle opponents online in single-screen arenas. Individual, varied units are plonked on the battlefield from your deck, each costing elixir that refills as you fight. Wins come by clocking an opponent’s strategy, and countering with cunning combos.
Clash Royale’s freemium, so obviously designed to mug your wallet, but canny players can progress for free; and it’s hugely compelling, so although your bank balance might be safe, your free time won’t be.

Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic
Embedded video
If you’re very old, chances are you grumble at mobile remakes, complaining they’re nowhere near as good as what you had in the old days on your PC. But with RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, you can pretend your iPad is a 20-year-old computer, and play a mash-up of the first two games in the classic series.
Although compatible with iPhone, the game works best on the bigger screen, enabling you to design and manage a park, including constructing massive roller-coasters. Mercifully, it’s also largely free of the IAP that plagued modern versions – here, you pay only for expansion packs, not virtual currency. See? Old school is best. Now, how about someone sorting *Civ II *for mobile?

Platform games
The best platform game for iPhone and iPad: Drop Wizard
Embedded video
The jolly tunes, pixelated graphics and single-screen action here bring to mind 1980s platform games Bubble Bobble and Snow Bros. However, Drop Wizard is a thoroughly modern creation, perfectly suited to mobile. It boasts a bite-sized pick-up-and-play structure, short level sets ending with battles against ginormous bosses.
Most importantly, the controls are pitch-perfect. Instead of run/jump/fire, you can only auto-run left or right and fall down holes. On landing on a platform below, you emit a magic blast, used to stun roaming enemies. Boot them and they tumble about for a bit, potentially collecting fellow stunned foes, eventually turning into a tasty piece of collectable fruit.
This combination of controls and attack methods is a masterstroke, forcing you to strategise, and making the entire product feel chaotic, fresh and exciting.

Telepaint
Embedded video
Described as ‘Portal meets Lemmings’, Telepaint finds you helping clockwork automaton paintpots reach their paintbrush pals.
Each single-screen test involves figuring out how to utilise teleporters to blast your pot in the right direction, simultaneously splattering the otherwise gloomy industrial surroundings with vibrant colour. Early levels are just simple enough for you to get cocky, whereupon Telepaint gleefully smacks your brains out with a Dulux catalogue wrapped around a brick.
On-screen VHS controls soften the blow a little, enabling you to pause the action, take a breath, and set up subsequent teleports. It’s a clever move, and one that stops you seeing red a little too often. Regardless, you’ll never quite look at a can of paint in the same way again after playing.

LIMBO
Embedded video
We usually wear our suspicious look when faced with platform games on iOS, because most of them are terrible; even more so when they’ve been punted across from another platform.
Amazingly, LIMBO loses nothing in its translation from consoles. The spooky, grim, creepy experience, akin to Groundhog Day in hell, remains a nightmarish vision of genius on the touchscreen, whether your tiny adventurer is being impaled by a giant spider or inching his way past deadly blades.

Yuri
Embedded video
With its silhouette-heavy imagery, Yuri might initially put you in mind of platform puzzler Limbo, but this is a very different beast. The titular hero awakes in a strange forest, and uses his bed as a kind of skateboard to dart about his fantastical surroundings.
The gameplay isn’t especially deep, and seasoned platform fans might blaze through it without thinking. But Yuri succeeds through its penchant for exploration and art. Every one of the ten levels looks gorgeous, and feels like a kind of living papercraft. And the changes of pace work well, from picking your way through slower sections to belting along like a maniac on your wheelie bed.

The best adventure game for iPhone and iPad: Year Walk
Embedded video
Rich in Swedish folklore, Year Walk has you venture into the cold, dark woods, where strange creatures lurk and terrible events blur reality and fiction, past and present.
With an interface that resembles a creepy, twisted picture book, you must discern clues, unravelling the dark secrets of the forest. Literal horror awaits, along with one of the finest conclusions of any modern adventure title. The journey there will keep you transfixed, not least during those moments it’s scaring the pants off of you.

Device 6
Embedded video
You know you’re in for a treat as soon as Device 6 launches, unleashing a ballsy credits sequence any classic spy show would be proud to call its own. It then dumps you on a remote island with a name (Anna) and absolutely no idea of how you got there or what to do next.
You navigate the story — literally, since words form corridors you travel along — trying to make sense of what you see and hear, to complete cryptic puzzles and unravel the island’s secrets. To say more would spoil the surprises within, but suffice to say this is a modern gaming classic, and was one of 2013’s finest titles on any platform.

Death Road to Canada
Embedded video
This game is like if someone had made The Walking Dead on the SNES, fashioning a home conversion lacking in gore but laced with black humour.
The randomly generated road trip has you travel from Florida to the reported safety of Canada. One moment, you’ll be scavenging for supplies with your little crew, smacking zombies with brooms, and finding a surprising amount of petrol hidden in toilets. Elsewhere, your fortunes are driven by multiple-choice narratives, and intense ‘siege’ scenes where you’re dumped in a claustrophobic space and told to survive.
The randomness can irk when one of your team loses half your supplies through having a hole in their bag, but it’s hard to remain mad at a game that lets you recruit dogs – and those dogs then out of the blue suggest making Molotov cocktails from fuel at an abandoned petrol station.

Love you to bits
Embedded video
Love You to Bits is an old-school point-and-click adventure reimagined for touchscreen. Rookie space explorer Kosmo searches planets for parts of his robot girlfriend (don’t think too hard about that), regularly finding himself immersed in challenges littered with pop-culture references.
The charm offensive never lets up, from a 2D Monument Valley to a certain famous space cantina. And although the puzzles are typically quite simple and sometimes require crazy leaps of logic, the game’s ceaselessly clever nature, warmth and smarts means you’re going to love it to bits in return.

Her Story
Embedded video
In Her Story, your device is temporarily transformed into an ancient desktop PC. As it whirrs and clanks into life, you see a window for the L.O.G.I.C. Database, ominously pre-populated with a search term: MURDER. Hit ‘Search’ and video fragments appear, all of a woman being interviewed by police.
If you’re a remotely inquisitive sort, that’ll be it for you. Hours will be spent eking out clues from everything the woman says, and trying to unravel mysteries within mysteries. The database itself intentionally hampers you, limiting access to five videos (although listing how many were actually found). The contrivance is obviously designed to force you to delve deeper, but anyone who lived through the 1990s PC era will probably grin, remembering when software really was that user-hostile.

Milkmaid of the Milky Way
Embedded video
It’s always the way: you’re minding your business, tending cows in a 1920s Norwegian fjord, when you end up wrapped up in an intergalactic feud involving a ferocious monarch with a powerful pointy stick, space cows, and an oracle that seemingly wants to be a water feature in a shopping centre.
And that’s just part of the oddball narrative at the heart of Milkmaid of the Milky Way (which also happens to be completely written in rhyme). Fans of old-school point-and-click adventures will be in their element – and so too will be anyone hankering for a few hours of charming interactions, smart puzzles and entertaining exploration.

Puzzle and match games
The best puzzle and match game on iPhone and iPad: Euclidean Lands
Embedded video
This stunning turn-based puzzler borrows from Monument Valley’s minimalist isometric views, Hitman GO’s turn-based puzzles, and the twisty-turny nature of a Rubik’s Cube. Your aim across 40 tiny geometric worlds hanging in space is to figure out how to reach and brutally stab enemies who can be lurking on any surface.
Early levels offer small cubes and static foes who guard only a single square. But Euclidean Lands quickly ramps up the challenge, with increasingly complex 3D architecture designed to trap and deceive, and enemies that move of their own accord and even take over moving the cubes. The game’s a tactile joy, marrying the very best of dazzling visuals and deviously designed brain-smashing puzzles.

Threes!
Embedded video
Threes! is one of those rare things in puzzle games: a new idea. As you swipe, every tile on the four-by-four board moves, and pairs merge and level up. Matters are complicated by a new tile being added on the edge you swiped from during every move. The aim is therefore to keep going until you run out of space, planning ahead to create upgrade chains that put off the inevitable deadlock.
In a sense, Threes! is the iPhone’s Tetris — a simple, beautifully realised puzzler understood in moments but that takes months to master. But unlike those Russian blocks, Threes! is infused with personality, the little tiles burbling away and grinning like loons when they spot a partner in an adjacent slot.

World of Goo HD
Embedded video
2D Boy’s beautiful and surreal physics puzzler didn’t start out on iOS, but it really made sense once converted to it. The story centres on the World of Goo Corporation — seemingly a global leader in wrecking a planet — and the curious little Goo Balls that inhabit and power the world.
Puzzles mostly involve inventive ways of using Goo to build structures to a pipe that sucks the oblivious blobs to ‘Goo Heaven’ (i.e. a power plant). In being able to drag the Goo around with your finger, the game comes alive on the touchscreen in a way it just doesn’t when using a mouse or traditional controller. An evocative soundtrack and serious storytelling smarts further elevate World of Goo, frequently transforming a playable, engrossing puzzler into a disarmingly touching experience.

Slayaway Camp
Embedded video
From the mind behind Bejeweled and Peggle comes this sliding puzzler that manages to subvert one of the most placid puzzle games of all: Soko-Ban. As in that much-loved but decidedly sedate title, you slide about a single-screen maze of sorts, attempting to reach goals and avoid hazards.
But in an amusing twist, Slayaway Camp exists in a world of blocky 1980s cinema horror. Your little deranged serial killer therefore slides along until hitting something, aiming to hack hapless teenagers and cops to pieces, which you can enjoy by way of bloody pixelated cut scenes. It’s gloriously demented, with lashings of black humour – and the puzzles are really good, too.

Snakebird
Embedded video
This puzzle game looks sweet and innocent with its grumpy cartoon birds and vibrant colours. The mechanics seem simple too: swipe to guide your snakebird to fruit, which when munched expands the crabby freak of nature; then make for the exit.
But Snakebird was designed by a sadist seemly determined to smash your brains out. Pretty soon you’re staring at the screen, having made judicious use of the generous unlimited undos, convinced a puzzle is impossible. Many minutes later, you crack it. You feel like a genius. And then you realise there are dozens more levels still to go.

The Room Three
Embedded video
The first two installments of The Room were among the best puzzlers we'd played in years, fully taking advantage of the possibilities of a mobile interface and delivering brain-melting conundrums wrapped up in a creepy, brilliantly realised story.
The third edition is even better though: much bigger in both scale and ambition, it's not just one of the best puzzlers but simple one of the best games of the year.
At its heart, little has changed - you're faced with a box, but every time you find a lock or a switch, it’s just another layer that takes you deeper into a weird and mystifying enigma. But this time you can go further inside the boxes, there are more locations to explore and the puzzles themselves are much more varied. Four alternate endings also give it a longeivity somewhat lacking in the originals.
Best played in the dark, preferably with a storm brewing outside, The Room Three is an atmospheric treat; take it in greedily (although turn off the hints system for the full experience) and then if you haven't already played them, go back and devour the The Room and The Room Two.

The best shooting game for iPhone and iPad: Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved
Embedded video
This is the kind of blaster you want to shove in the face of anyone who whines that mobile can’t do proper console games. As with previous entries in the Geometry Wars series, Dimensions Evolved is a twin-stick shooter where you face legions of lurid beasties intent on your destruction. Only this time, everything’s in 3D.
Rather than doing battle within flat arenas, Dimensions Evolved finds you fighting giant bosses across the walls of a huge cube flipping about in the void, or desperately trying to stay alive among swarms of enemies multiplying across the surface of a giant, lurching space peanut. It looks gorgeous, controls perfectly, has tons of content, and should only be avoided if you’re so much of a pacifist you can’t stomach the idea of shooting small neon spaceships.

The Bug Butcher
Embedded video
Scientists have got a lot to answer for, what with their creating massive genetic monsters. In The Bug Butcher, most have apparently answered by being devoured by said horrors, which happen to have huge teeth; but one hapless survivor remains, which you must protect by shooting ALL THE THINGS. (Except for the scientist.)
You therefore scoot back and forth, blasting bouncing foes, which squelch and split, while keeping a beady eye on the ceiling for scientist-snaring spiders. It all comes across a bit like a mash-up of Pong and Space Invaders, but with scrolling, modern cartoon visuals, and snarky dialogue. And although the slightly banana-thumb controls betray its origins on a platform with ‘real controls’, this is still very much a satisfying iOS blaster.
Download The Bug Butcher (£2.99)
Tanks! - Seek & Destroy
Embedded video
Formerly known as Panzerkampf 3, Tanks! - Seek & Destroy now has a far more sensible name to match its no-nonsense gameplay.
You’re essentially dumped in a sparse vector landscape, and charged with blowing away endless hordes of tanks. Visually, the game echoes arcade classic Battlezone, but the controls are reminiscent of a racer’s, and the frenetic, breakneck gameplay offers the relentless intensity of the most vicious modern shooters.
Multiple modes and power-ups add a little depth, but mostly this is about speeding about and blowing things up with your rage face on.

EPOCH.2
Embedded video
There are a bunch of first-person shooters for iOS, but they’re various levels of hideous, given that complex gamepad controls really aren’t suited to the touchscreen. EPOCH.2 cunningly deals with such limitations by way of a post-apocalyptic shoot-and-cover experience based around gestural input.
There’s a story underpinning everything, but mostly you’ll find yourself immersed in an explosive choreography, tapping and swiping to make your surprisingly nimble robot leap about, blasting its foes into so much scrap.
The whiff of IAP and a slightly iffy upgrade model don’t take the shine off your rustbucket’s antics, not least when you find yourself alternatively dodging and pummelling a giant boss in this bleak and desolate future.

The best arcade game for iPhone and iPad: Osmos
Embedded video
Osmos is best described as an ambient arcade game. Although demanding quick thinking and fast reflexes, it also rewards planning and patience.
The aim is to grow your mote, which can absorb those smaller than itself and get about the place by ejecting matter. In moving and causing your mote to shrink, you discover an uneasy balancing act must be continually played out as you explore playgrounds that echo microscopic primordial soup through to solar systems with deadly sun-like ‘attractors’ and dozens of orbiting motes.

Forget-Me-Not
Embedded video
Forget-Me-Not is a pick-and-mix of classic arcade gaming. You control a little square with eyes who spews lasers and munches flowers.
As he ambles about each randomly generated dungeon, other critters go about their business, which usually means furiously trying to kill anything nearby. Before long, open warfare breaks out and huge chunks of the maze are obliterated as you frantically seek out the key to the exit.
Equal parts Pac-Man, Rogue, Wizard of Wor and Gauntlet, and with dashes of other arcade titles, Forget-Me-Not is easily the equal of every one of its inspirations, and one of the finest arcade titles we’ve ever played.

Eliss Infinity
Embedded video
When Eliss arrived in 2009, it was a game that defined the iPhone, fully taking advantage of multitouch. You had to contain and manipulate planets, which could be torn apart or merged before being dragged to portals of appropriate size and colour. Letting planets of different colour collide would deplete limited energy reserves, and matters were further complicated by space storms and other hazards.
Years later, this semi-sequel still feels fresh, and in later levels success demands intricate yet speedy finger gymnastics. Beyond the original game, there’s also a truly crazed endless mode to master.

Power Hover
Embedded video
In a world devoid of humans, robots have seemingly taken up hoverboarding and kleptomania. A nefarious android has pilfered all the batteries that power your village, and so you hop on your board and scoot after him, scooping up any batteries dropped in his wake, across 30 diverse levels.
This could have all been painfully generic, but Power Hover pushes everything to the max. The simple controls — left or right, and that’s it — are twinned with floaty physics that lends the game a unique feel. The level design is superb, optimal pathways weaving through deserts infested with giant sand worms and spider-like drilling apparatus intent on stabbing an inconvenient hole in your droid. It all adds up to a challenge that’s familiar and yet has the capacity to surprise and delight.
Download Power Hover (£3.99)
Linia
Embedded video
Fruit Ninja reimagined by a lover of precision geometry, Linia rewards gamers with the keen eye, lightning fast reactions, and dexterity of a snake snatching prey out of thin air. Each of the 80 or so scenes features shapes that bob, weave and meander. Your task is to swipe through them in such a way that your finger collides with shapes to match the colour order of a set of discs elsewhere on the screen.
Linia never urges you to hurry. You can watch the patterns and cycles until you clock when to strike. Then it’s all down to a pixel-perfect slice across the screen at precisely the right time, before, presumably, finally allowing yourself to blink, having been staring at the screen for a good couple of minutes waiting for your moment.
