Miervaldis has the Years of Rice and Salt, a fantastic book by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's an alternate history exploring what might have happened if the Black Death had wiped out nearly all of Europe's population instead of a third. It spans hundreds of years, and follows recurring reincarnated characters, which works far, far better than I just made it sound.

Tai Lon on Miervaldis: “Classy. Probably the kind of person I’d have been tempted to steal from before, but I think once I figured out enough about him, it wouldn’t have happened. Sometimes, he strikes me as a little arrogant, definitely detached, which is a luxury I don’t think we get to have, really, so I don’t know if we’d be best friends or anything. But I don’t dislike him at all.”
Lila on Rae: “She’s hilarious. I mean, hilarious in the way that you see a kid do something dumb and laugh ‘cause they don’t know any better. Man. All that magic at her fingertips, and she’s using it to, what, hang out with people? With her grandma? The way she rambles is pretty much only useful for sneaking up to get a dagger between her ribs. --Would I? Eh. I dunno. She hasn’t given me any reason to kill her yet, but I figure she’s more likely to get herself killed--or wise up to the world--before that happens.”

Holding their hands when they are shaking.
writing prompts
@risualto tumblr is having a tumblr moment and not letting me actually answer this ask, but thank you! this one felt meant for Miervaldis and Xoti, please enjoy!
The flash of light is both blinding and beautiful, as the wave of souls flows from Xoti’s lantern to the adra pillar at the center of the tower. Sparks fly through the air, powered by the pure energy from the ritual, swirling and charging in a cacophony of released life.
Miervaldis can feel them, in the air, under his skin, returning to the Wheel in accordance with the gods’ will. Some part of him wants to appreciate the majesty of the moment- but a scream rips itself from Xoti’s throat as she makes contact, and all of that is momentarily forgotten as his attention turns to her alone.
Xoti trembles under the strain of her own power, but she remains standing, strong and unyielding in the face of the energy which crackles up her arms and across her body. One hand stays gripped on the lantern while the other presses insistently upon the adra; her face stays lifted to the blazing light before her, framed by dark hair dancing wildly in the electrified wind.
She has been gripped, fully, by the power of Gaun. No mortal can reach her now.
Yet Miervaldis steps forward anyway, arms extended, desperate to help.
“Release the souls,” he urges, but his voice is hoarse and creaky, and he’s certain she doesn’t hear. He reaches for her, but the radiating energy burns his fingers and he must withdraw.
There’s blood on Xoti’s face now, though in the chaos he can’t see her injury. “You’re hurt,” he cries, fighting to be heard, and he tries again to approach her- until she shakes her head furiously and shouts back, “I can do this!”
She screws her eyes shut and leans closer to the adra, and finally one magnificent burst fills the air with thunder as a crack shatters straight through the glowing pillar. The last of the soul energy swirls through the air, around the broken adra, until it finally seeps into the stone and at last gives itself over to peace.
Miervaldis pays the display little mind; he is already falling to his knees to catch Xoti as she stumbles limply to the ground. She is still bloody, and she looks terribly weak, and she’s trembling…but he can hear her muttering to herself, and it can only be a good sign that she feels well enough to rattle out a long string of curses.
With a relieved sigh, Miervaldis takes her shaking hands in his- she’s bleeding all over now, he sees, her fingers and palms a mess of cuts, lingering gifts from the glassy adra. He wraps those bleeding hands in his and holds her steady, and with a quiet thanks to Berath he summons healing magic to send washing over her skin. As the magic does its work, he traces his thumb over the pulse of her wrist, reassuring himself once more that she is okay.
“Xoti,” he says softly, whispering her name like a prayer. “Talk to me. How do you feel?”
“Like Hel,” she mutters, though with time her shaking stops. “But…lighter. So that’s good, I think.”
She slumps against Miervaldis’s shoulder, and even manages to muster a smile as she glances up at him. “You know, I don’t think I ever heard you sound as worried as you did just now.”
“Nobody’s ever scared me like you did just now.”
She gives an exhausted nod. “Scared myself, too, if I’m being honest. Son of a lice-bitten cur, but that hurt something awful.” She closes her eyes and leans closer, tucking her face into Miervaldis’s shoulder. A trail of blood trickles down her neck, and Miervaldis gently wipes it away.
“Thanks for having my back,” Xoti says, giving his fingers a squeeze.
“I didn’t do much. It was all you.”
“You were here for me. That mattered.” She presses a soft kiss against Miervaldis’s collarbone, then pulls away with a reluctant groan. Her lantern lies beside her, empty but intact, and she latches it back to its place at her belt. “And I guess I gotta keep filling this up, ‘til it’s time to do the whole thing over again.”
“If serving one’s god was easy, everyone would do it,” Miervaldis murmurs. It’s an old lesson, one most devotees learn early in their callings, and Xoti nods her agreement.
“You’re right about that. And I never was one to take the easy route. Nah, I’ll keep doing my duty ‘til I fall to dust and bones.”
“Xoti,” Miervaldis begins, “you are…”
But he trails off. The sight of her- bloodied and shaken and harrowed, yet still practically glowing with devotion to the faith and the path she’s committed herself to- stops the words right in his throat.
“Crazy?” she supplies. “Yeah. I’ve been told.”
“No.” Miervaldis cups her cheek in his hand. “You’re incredible.”
He kisses her, and she sighs dreamily into his mouth as she returns the gesture. Miervaldis can taste her blood on his lips as he pulls away, but her eyes are shining bright enough to eclipse any fear or worry.
“Let’s get on out of here,” she says, and Miervaldis offers her his hand again.
“Can you walk?”
“Oh yeah, I’m right as-ah, shoot!” Her legs give out as she tries to stand, and she collapses against Miervaldis. “Sorry, there. I guess my bones are still a little shaky.”
“It’s okay. I’ve got you.” Miervaldis wraps his arm around her, and she smiles happily as she leans into his support. He presses a kiss to her windswept hair, and repeats the promise as a whisper in her ear. “I’ve got you.”

One day after the Taliban seized control of the Afghan government, the Biden administration found itself struggling to explain why local allies like interpreters, drivers, security guards and fixers had been left behind.
The Biden administration’s justification—that many of the Afghans who had risked their lives to aid the U.S. military actually wanted to stay—left aid workers, refugee advocates and members of Congress gobsmacked.
The truth, those advocates have told The Daily Beast, is simple and stark: that they simply can’t pay for it.
“We don’t know of any SIV recipients that wanted to stay in Afghanistan,” said James Miervaldis, chairman of No One Left Behind, a group that works to aid Afghan and Iraqi interpreters as they resettle in the United States. “The reason they haven’t quote-unquote ‘exercised the right’ is because they don’t have the money.”
That fact was wholly absent from President Joe Biden’s speech on Monday, when he attributed the lack of evacuation to some kind of hopeful, last-ditch Afghan nationalism.
“I know that there are concerns about why we did not begin evacuating Afghan civilians sooner,” Biden said in a speech on Monday that largely laid the blame for the fall of Afghanistan at the feet of the country’s own security forces. “Part of the answer is some of the Afghans did not want to leave earlier, still hopeful for their country. And part of it was because the Afghan government and its supporters discouraged us from organizing a mass exodus to avoid triggering, as they said, ‘a crisis of confidence.’”
Advocates, members of Congress, and nonprofit organizations that work on behalf of translators and interpreters in conflict zones were baffled by the president’s contention, telling The Daily Beast that they had never encountered any successful SIV applicants who turned down a chance to leave the country—thereby escaping potentially deadly retribution from the Taliban—voluntarily.
“The administration’s claim that many Afghans did not want to leave the country earlier is inconsistent with our experience,” said Krish O’Mara Vignarajah, president and CEO of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, who said that the Afghans her organization was working with were “desperate” to leave Afghanistan and were being blocked by a visa backlog that now tops nearly 70,000 applicants.
“Since the moment that we announced we were fully withdrawing, I have not heard of a single human being that was like, ‘Oh no, I want to stay and hedge my bets with the Taliban,’” said one congressional aide whose boss has been lobbying the administration to bring SIV applicants to safety. “That’s insane.”
There are an estimated 18,000 Afghans seeking a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), which is provided to Afghan nationals who worked on behalf of the U.S. government in Afghanistan or served as interpreters for American military personnel. Of those who have been granted the visa, only half were able to exercise their right to come to the United States before the Afghan government collapsed—mostly, advocates say, because most of them just can’t afford to leave.
Under normal circumstances, once successful applicants for an SIV receive their visas from the U.S. embassy for themselves and their family, they either purchase airline tickets for a commercial flight out of Afghanistan. But those flights can cost upwards of $2,000 per ticket, in a country where the median household income is barely $4,100 per year. Even for a lone SIV applicant, the price of safety is often out of reach. For a family of five, it’s nearly impossible to leave without obtaining a loan—meaning that even upon reaching safety in the United States, they are burdened with enormous debt.
Even American citizens are being stuck with an extraordinary bill upon being airlifted out of Afghanistan. On Aug. 14, as Kabul fell to the Taliban, the State Department’s Overseas Security Advisory Council released a security alert informing Americans abroad that “repatriation flights are not free, and passengers will be required to sign a promissory loan agreement and may not be eligible to renew their U.S. passports until the loan is repaid.”
For successful SIV applicants who cannot afford commercial flights—all of which have now been grounded anyway—they must apply for a seat on flights organized by the International Organization for Migration, a United Nations affiliate that provides migration services for refugees and displaced peoples. That process, Miervaldis said, can take up to five months—and that was before Afghanistan’s government collapsed.
“I guess it’s not enough for this administration to blame Afghans for losing the country because they just didn’t want it badly enough,” another congressional aide said caustically. “Now we have to blame people we fucking left there for us leaving them, too.”
The inability to pay for a flight out of Afghanistan, advocates said angrily, is not the same as choosing to stay—and is certainly different from doing so out of misplaced confidence that the Afghan central government would be able to beat back the Taliban.
