#midway era continues to clear in terms of storytelling even if i don't care about all of the characters from that time period

As much as I believe a game without Sonya, Skarlet, Sareena, and Jade not being base roster was destined to fail, it's not really the reason "mk1" doesn't work nor is their absence the reason it's unsalvageable. There are problems way worse than their absence(which is felt don't get me wrong) but given how MK1 was written it was a blessing anyway.

Making Kuai Liang into a pyromancer/Scorpion when nobody asked for that, and no one really fucking asked for Kuai & Harumi to be a thing. Turning a race of people into a disease when once again, no one asked for that. Reducing Kitana to a background character. Genderbending Cyrax & Sektor just to put them in relationships with Kuai Liang & Bi Han. Showcasing Taleena but at the same time not really because they are forbidden. Making Bi Han illogically evil for no reason actually, the reason is to make everyone else look better because nrs loves basic ass black & white morality and enough fans love it too apparently but I'm not gonna get into that now, and the obvious of course, turning MK into an knock-off (at the height of Marvel/Superhero fatigue of all times).....Yeah sorry but the story is terrible beyond repair, and I personally had reservations from the outset. While everyone else was getting hyped, I remained skeptical. Unfortunately, that skepticism was proven right more or less.

Say what you will about mk9-11, I have and will again someday, but they still felt like Mortal Kombat at their core. They were still recognizable and therefore possibly mendable even in the face of their many flaws. But the MK1 timeline as is? Not a chance. IMO, there's no fixing Kuai Liang being a pyromancer or Hanzo now being a child being raised by him. There's no undoing Tarkatans being a deadly disease instead of a race of people from Outworld. And apparently, there's no fixing Bi Han's personality(which Dominic got wrong in the first place but whatever)either, so he pretty much became Noob Saibot for nothing.....yeah they might as well reboot this shit again.
