rain anon (hii nice to e-meet u) but i'm fascinated by the fearless vault saying "it wasn't just like a movie, the rain didn't soak through my clothes" implying the romantic imagery of a fight in the rain that's dramatically resolved with a passionate kiss, and she's saying "we didn't have a moment of resolution, our breakup wasn't dramatic like the movies, it just.... was"
in contrast with the TTPD "my spine split from carrying us up a hill, wet through my clothes weary bones caught the chill", using almost Sisyphean imagery of endless misery where she's like you know what? I actually am standing out in the rain, under *your* raincloud, and i'm miserable and dragging this relationship along and there's nothing romantic about it anymore it's just sad
and there's nothing that inherently relates these lines together except that I've been thinking about how she was going through the events that led up to the breakup with joe (whatever they were! we don't know!) as she was rerecording her vault tracks and i would be incredibly curious to know how that experience left its fingerprints on the recordings of midnights and TTPD
anyways I hope any of that makes sense thank you for your inbox being a safe space for swiftie brain dumps lol
HELLO 🤝 it is fun how often she uses the imagery of rain-soaked clothes to describe passion or grief. reminds me of "rain soaking, blind hoping, you said i was free loading" in high infidelity, and also the way she describes herself as "midnight rain."
one of the things i love so much about ttpd's length and sprawl is that i feel you can see her reuse certain phrases or metaphors, which give insight into her emotional preoccupations, but also just... how certain things speak to her. thinking of how war banners appear on tgw, and wcs. they're not related, but they show how she thinks about these situations as war-like, and we know combat is a big theme in her music period.
so yeah i totally think she loves to revisit rain as a metaphor, but i am so certain the re-records and vault tracks made her recognize or confront some old patterns and also artistically inspired her!!

hiii i feel like this is late but i just want to say that i love tgw and wcs, and i especially love the melody of tgw, and its super valid that you don't because the things that people like about certain things are also reasons why some people dislike them, like i experience this all the time with books i like and many others dislike and vice versa
this is a useless and late ask but i just wanted to say that after i saw many people sending you asks about that! hehe
this isn’t late or useless at all, thank you for sending this, i appreciate it!! and yes exactly, we all have wildly different tastes and there are songs that i cannot fathom people disliking (midnight rain!!). and like u said, it applies to anything outside music too… idk how any of you enjoy reading acotar or twilight or romance books and yet!
