What is Black Friday?Black Friday is an annual sales event that traditionally happens at the end of November, after Thanksgiving. This year, like has been the case in the past few years, retailers will be emphasizing online shopping. When is Black Friday 2021?Black Friday falls on Friday, November 26, 2021. Cyber Monday will take place on Monday, November 29, 2021. Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of November, and each year, Black Friday occurs the day following, with Cyber Monday following shortly after. When do Black Friday 2021 sales start?Broadly speaking, Black Friday starts as soon as Thanksgiving ends. However, every year, Black Friday sales start earlier and earlier. With ongoing supply chain issues, we expect to see stores start their sales sooner and end them later. This year, we saw the first Black Friday sales begin in mid-October, with popular retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart, offering up tons of epic deals. How long do Black Friday sales last?Black Friday is followed directly by Cyber Monday on November 29, 2021. Technically speaking, as soon as Cyber Monday begins, Black Friday ends. The best discounts are usually limited to these two days (and the weekend between them); however, some bargains stick around through the end of the following week. What stores offer Black Friday 2021 deals?Nearly every retailer from big box stores, like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target, and start-ups, like Leesa, Casper and Our Place, offer some sort of promotion during Black Friday.►More: Don't wait until Black Friday to start your holiday shopping. Here's why you need to shop now. ►Black Friday 2021: Black Friday deals: Amazon, Walmart, Target and more have unveiled holiday shopping plansDuring Black Friday, we expect retailers to limit the availability of the very best doorbuster deals—and they may run out quickly. To ensure that you’ll be able to check out with ease, make sure your shipping and payment information is up to date at the retailers you intend to shop. Be aware of how much cash back your credit cards will net for each retailer, or if there are benefits you’d like to use (for instance, some credit cards offer extended warranties for certain products purchased). If you’re not already an Amazon Prime member, you can sign up for a free, month-long trial. The subscription is $6.49 for students and $5.99 for those receiving qualifying government assistance. For everyone else, an Amazon Prime subscription will cost $12.99 per month, or $119 per year. This subscription gets you free two-day shipping, plus tons of other benefits, including Prime Gaming, Prime Video and access to Amazon’s Lightning deals. If you're planning on shopping Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the optimal time to start or renew your Prime membership would be Monday, November 1. However, we recommend shopping early this year to avoid any supply issues. There’s more where this deal came from.Sign up for Reviewed’s Perks and Rec newsletter and we’ll keep ’em coming every Sunday through Friday. The product experts at Reviewed have all your shopping needs covered. Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 Review And Guide 2023
There are many reasons to buy a hybrid, including the fact that you can switch between tablet mode and laptop mode. With the 2-in-1 Dell XPS 13 9315, the US IT giant hopes to get people to stop using regular notebooks.
Dell’s detachable makes a good first impression because it has a sleek folio case made of CNC-milled, recycled aluminium, and an efficient Intel processor on the inside.
The price may also be right. The Core i5 chip in the least expensive Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 costs $1,149 in the US and £1,198 in the UK. The price for a Core i7 model is between $1,299 and £1,689.
There are many good things, but there is a lot of competition for them. The Samsung Galaxy Book 2 360 is one of our favourite laptops that can be used as a tablet. If you don’t need a hybrid, you might also want to check out the Dell XPS 13 Plus, the Apple MacBook Air M2, or the Asus ZenBook S 13 OLED.
Design & Build
A strong, good-looking design that can be taken apart
Other laptops and hybrids have a wider range of uses.
The cameras are great, but there aren’t enough ports.
Tumblr media
The CNC-milled aluminium edges and gunmetal folio case of the XPS 13 make it look great, and both parts are strong. Both sides of the tablet are well protected by the folio, which is a good sign.
At the bottom of the panel is a strong magnet that holds the folio case to the tablet. Once that’s done, the magnetic folio props the tablet up at 100, 110.5, and 125-degree angles to make it look like a laptop.
On the top, you’ll find a power button with a fingerprint reader and a volume rocker. The cameras are great; for video calls, you have a 5Mp unit with Windows Hello log in, and for landscapes, there’s an 11Mp outward-facing camera. You have Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 on the inside.
The XPS is a good start, but it can’t do everything. That angled folio case, for example: any laptop will give you more options for how to position the screen. For example, the Samsung’s kickstand can sit at almost any angle, and the Microsoft Surface Pro 9’s kickstand can spin through 360 degrees.
As with most detachables, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is awkward to use on your lap. In laptop mode, it’s 300mm from front to back, which is more than any other laptop. And while 1.3 kg and 17 mm are fine for weight and thickness, every competitor is thinner and lighter.
Also, don’t expect much in terms of physical connections. Only two Thunderbolt 4 ports are on the left side, and you’ll need one to charge.
Dell comes with headphone and full-size USB adapters, but the MacBook Air has a headphone jack and the Asus has three USB-C ports. Connectors for HDMI, full-size USB, microSD, and headphones are all on the Samsung.
The keyboard and trackpad
Keyboard is impressive from edge to edge
Good trackpad
Backlight, but there’s no keypad
The keyboard has the same “zero lattice” design that runs from edge to edge as the XPS 13 Plus. At first, it seems strange because there are no gaps and there isn’t much movement, but it’s easy to get up to speed.
The buttons work quickly and are easy to use, and the case makes it strong. Its keyboard is better than that of the Surface Pro 9, its hardware is more satisfying than that of Samsung, and it’s almost as good as a MacBook.
The backlight is fine, and the trackpad is also good. It’s big and comfortable, and the buttons work well, but they could be a little more crisp.
Screen & Speakers
A high-contrast IPS panel with a high resolution
With the optional XPS Stylus, the touch screen works well.
There are better speakers and screens elsewhere.
Tumblr media
The IPS screen on every Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 is the same. The 3:2 screen has a resolution of 2880 x 1920, so there is a lot of detail and height. The panel is very well protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus that goes all the way to the edges.
It has a touchscreen, and the XPS Stylus, which has 4,096 pressure points and is great for creative work, works with it. It also sticks to the top of the screen with magnets, which is a clever way to store it. The stylus, on the other hand, is not included and costs an extra $100 or £112.
The panel has a peak brightness of 528 nits, which makes it easy to use indoors and out. It also has a contrast ratio of 2,031:1, which is about as good as it gets for IPS. This means that bold colours have a lot of depth and detail.
With a 1.1 Delta E, those colours are also accurate, but this screen can only show the sRGB gamut. It showed 94.8% of that space, but only about 70% of the Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 spaces.
Based on these results, the XPS is great for everyday tasks and creative work, but not for high-end design work or HDR media.
Both the XPS 13 Plus and the ZenBook have high-resolution OLED screens that have better colour and contrast. The Samsung convertible has an OLED screen, but it has a lower resolution than the Surface Pro 9. The Surface Pro 9’s 120Hz refresh rate is twice as fast as the Dell’s 60Hz rate, which makes the user interface smoother.
The two 2W speakers aren’t very loud, but they’re fine for background music and YouTube videos. The kit from Apple is much better.
Specs & Performance
Intel Core i5-1230U or i7-1250U
DDR4 memory with 8GB or 16GB
SSDs with 512GB or 1TB
Tumblr media
Intel’s low-power Core i5-1230U and Core i7-1250U processors are used in the two XPS 13 2-in-1 models. These processors have two multi-threaded performance cores with top speeds of 4.4GHz and 4.7GHz, respectively.
The i5 model has 8GB of memory, and the Core i7 model has 16GB. However, the RAM is only DDR4, while most competitors use DDR5. I tested a 512GB SSD, and its read and write speeds are 4988MB/s and 3586MB/s, which are good.
On paper, there’s nothing to get excited about, and benchmarks aren’t much better. In the multi-core test for Geekbench 5, a score of 6,898 is a few hundred points behind the AMD chip in the Asus and further behind the i7-1260P chip in the XPS 13 Plus and the M2 chip in the Apple laptop.
PCMark 10 didn’t give us a break. With a score of 4,969, the XPS 13 2-in-1 is still behind the Asus and Dell XPS 13 Plus. In our tests, the XPS 13 2-in-1 could only beat the Core i5-1235U-powered Samsung.
Don’t count on the Iris Xe graphics chip from Intel to help you much. Its 3DMark Night Raid score of 11,151 is a long way behind both the Asus’s integrated Radeon core and the i7-Iris 1260P’s chip.
You won’t have any trouble running office apps, a lot of browser tabs, music and media streamers, or basic photo and video editing tools on the XPS.
If you try to do more, it will start to slow down, and it can’t keep up with P-series, Ryzen, or Apple chips. If you want to go with the Core i5 CPU, you should definitely go with the 16GB upgrade.
The Dell doesn’t have noisy fans, so at least you don’t have to deal with that. That’s great for working quietly, but if you push on the hardware, the top of the tablet gets a little warm. It can be seen, but it’s not dangerous.
Battery life and how to charge
49.5Wh battery
45W charging
Tumblr media
The battery life is just okay. In a video playback test with the screen brightness turned down, the 49.5Wh battery lasted for 9 hours and 25 minutes. However, it only lasted 8 hours and 27 minutes in an everyday work test with the same screen level.
Expect closer to seven hours if you make the screen brighter or use more of the parts. A thirty-minute charge should give you a good 37% of power.
In some situations, the XPS won’t last through a workday, and in this area, some competitors are better. The Asus will last twice as long as the MacBook and almost as long as the Galaxy Book.
Price & Availability
The XPS 13 2-in-1 with the i5-1230U processor and 8GB of memory costs $1,149 or £1,198. When you add 16GB, the prices go up to $1,299 and £1,489.
The Core i7-1250U model comes with 16GB of memory and costs between $1,299 and £1,689. Only the Core i7 model can be upgraded from a 512GB SSD to a 1TB drive, which raises the price in the US and UK to $1,449 and £1,889.
As always, the best places to buy the XPS are Dell’s US and UK websites, but you can also get it at Currys.
The one with 16GB of memory and a Core i7 processor is the best. But it’s easy to find cheap
power if you’re willing to give up the detachable part of the Dell. The Asus ZenBook costs $1,299 or £999, while the Core i7 processor in the Dell XPS 13 Plus costs £1,299 or £1,399.
If you don’t mind a U-series chip, the regular XPS 13 costs $999 or £1,199. With a Core i7 CPU, the Galaxy Book 3 360 costs $799 or £1,399, and the Galaxy Book 2 360 costs $849 or £1,299. Even though not all of these alternatives are hybrids, a few of them have better screens than the XPS.
The MacBook is also competitive because it starts at $1,119 or £1,249. However, the price goes up a lot for the stronger M2 chip and 16GB of memory. The Surface is also expensive. In the US and UK, a Core i7 CPU and the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard start at $1,808 and £1,838, respectively.
If you want to see all of your options, check out our chart of the best laptops and the best 2-in-1 laptops.
It’s a middle-of-the-road option in terms of price, and it’s pretty average in other ways, too.
The processor can handle everyday office and creative tasks, but nothing tougher, and the display is a bright, bold touchscreen that doesn’t have enough colours for high-end design situations. The battery hardly lasts all day.
Aside from that, the XPS has a good keyboard, but it’s heavier, thicker, and arguably less flexible than competitors. The screen is sturdy and well-equipped with cameras, but it doesn’t have many ports.
It’s not easy to sell. The XPS 13 2-in-1 is a good choice if you want a detachable device you can use every day instead of a hybrid that can be turned in any direction. But no matter what you’re looking for in a new laptop or convertible, you’ll probably find a better one somewhere else.

Caltech Sues Major Tech Companies For Data-Transmission Patent Infringement
By Eileen Chen, University of California Davis Class of 2023
January 23, 2023
Tumblr media
At the end of last year, the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) sued Samsung Electronics for infringing five of their patents. Caltech claims that certain Samsung devices use a Wi-Fi chip that infringes their data-transmission patents [1]. Some of these products include Samsung phones, tablets, watches, televisions, and refrigerators. Samsung attempted to pause the lawsuit while they challenge the patents at the United States Patent and Trademark Office [2]. The bid was rejected; U.S. District Judge Rodney Gilstrap said that delaying the lawsuit until the case was reviewed by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board would be unnecessary [3]. The court further asserts that granting the halt would prejudice Caltech [3].
In January of 2020, Caltech wan a lawsuit against Apple Inc. and Broadcom for infringing their data-transmission patents. In the case, the jury awarded Caltech $837.8 million from Apple in damages and $270.2 million from Broadcom [4]. It was found that Apple and Broadcom infringed three of the five patents in the lawsuit. Two judges at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit disagree with the jury’s decision in this case. Judge Timothy Dyk questions whether the patents were infringed [5]. Caltech argues that their patents are infringed if the bits in the chips are “sometimes” repeated [5]. However, Dyk questions how irregular and occasional repetition of bits qualifies as infringement [5]. Furthermore, Judge Alan Lourie and Judge Timothy Dyk both disagree with Caltech’s hypothetical royalty rate [5]. They question why the damages the two companies are paying out are not of similar values if they were using the same technology. Since Broadcom is Apple’s supplier, Apple is being sued for using Broadcom’s chips in their iPhones. Yet, Caltech sought royalties from Apple worth five times as much as Broadcom [6]. Caltech’s royalty calculation relies on the hypothesis that if the two companies were to negotiate with Caltech separately, they would have agreed to different rates [6]. Therefore, Apple was asked to pay $1.40 per unit and Broadcom was asked to pay $0.26 per unit for the exact same chips. There will be a new trial on damages for this case. Furthermore, Apple believes that they should not have to pay the royalties to Caltech as they are an “indirect downstream party” [4] Apple’s involvement in this suit resulted in using Broadcom chips in their devices as Broadcom is one of their major suppliers.
On the same day they filed their lawsuits against Apple and Broadcom, Caltech also sued Dish and Hughes for their technology related to satellite broadband that used ‘irregular repeat and accumulation codes.[7]’ These two cases were dismissed with prejudice in 2016 [7].
In 2020, Caltech sues Microsoft for infringing the same encoding and decoding patents in their Surface tablets, Surface laptops, and Xbox video game consoles [8]. In addition to suing Microsoft, Caltech also sued Dell and HP for infringing technology that allows for faster data-transmission over Wi-Fi networks [8,9]. Some notable devices from these two companies that use the technology are HP Probook laptops, HP Envy laptops, and Dell Chromebooks [9]. These three lawsuits were filed in the Western District of Texas [7].

Do you have any recommendations on tablets that don’t need to be hooked up to a pc?
Hmm not really 🤔 But here's what little I know about em anyway:
There's the iPads, Microsoft Surface Books, Lenovo Yogas and Thinkpads and whatnot, I think HP has some tablet laptops as well, and I heard something about a Samsung Galaxy tablet thing?? Xiaomi and Huawei too, and, of course, the Wacom MobileStudio Pro which is more expensive than some used cars I've seen.
From what I've gathered, they rarely come in sizes above 12-13'', they have limited storage (unless you're willing to pay big bucks for upgrades), and not a whole lot of RAM and other performance specs I'm too tech-illiterate to remember. All of this is probably fine for a lot of artists, but for me personally it's not ideal. Even my 21.5'' tablet and 4GB videocard leave me wanting for more sometimes, so my spoiled ass could probably not work on them.
Anyway! The best suggestion I can give you on this is to find a list of standalone tablets, and find some honest opinions on them by looking them up on YouTube and paying extra attention to the more neutral ones (by real actual artists!), and reading the 3-4 star reviews on Amazon as well.

Testing out popular (FREE) writing hacks
There are a lot of writing hacks floating around, tips that are supposed to increase your writing productivity. Well, I tested them, and here are my thoughts:
1. Use Comic Sans
Let’s be honest. When we were in primary school, we typed EVERYTHING in Comic Sans. However, as we got older and more professional, Comic Sans appeared childish and we stopped using it.
Ask anyone what the most unprofessional font is and they’ll probably answer: Comic Sans MS
However, earlier this year the idea of using Comic Sans when writing your first draft started popping up and now, a lot of writers are swearing by it.
So, did it increase my productivity?
YES
I started writing a scene in Comic Sans and I wrote about five pages in like 30 minutes. The words just flowed. I don’t know why this font increases writing productivity, but if it works, I don’t really care why.
So, I would 100% recommend trying Comic Sans for your first draft. Remember, no one’s going to see it. And it’s pretty easy to change back to something like Times New Roman once you’ve finished a scene.
2. Dictation
I’ve heard a lot of professional authors rave about how much time they save by dictating their first drafts. However, a lot of dictation software and microphones are quite expensive. So, I tried the free alternatives at my disposal.
The latest version of OneNote, which comes included in a lot of Microsoft Office packages, now has a dictation feature. I know this isn’t technically free, but it was for me, since I already have Office installed. The OneNote mobile app is free, but I don’t know it is has this feature. And I just used the built-in microphone on my laptop. Google Docs also has a dictation feature, I think, but I haven’t tried it yet.
So, does it work?
The accuracy is surprisingly good. I dictated about three paragraphs this morning and only one or two words were incorrect. Also, OneNote’s dictation doesn’t allow for speaking punctuation, which means you’ll have to add these after the fact. Additionally, few people actually write in OneNote, so you’ll have to paste the text into your document.
Overall, this could be great for someone whose hands are tired of typing or who cannot sit at a desk any longer than their job already requires. However, it doesn’t really increase productivity. This may just be me, but I take longer to think up good sentences when I have to speak them. Then, I have to go back and add punctuation marks and correct some words. And then paste it into my draft document. It’s easier to just write it from the get-go.
However, some authors say that it just takes getting used to. So, maybe if you’re more of a verbal/audio thinker and don’t have your hands available at all times, this is a good hack for you. I just don’t think I’ll be using it much.
3. Writing sprints
This has been around for quite some time, but I only really started using it when I attempted Camp Nanowrimo during my test month. Essentially, writing sprints entail setting a timer for somewhere under an hour and then just focusing on getting as many words written as possible before the timer goes off. There are many published authors who swear by this.
So, does it increase productivity?
Yes. Firstly, it pushes you to write when you wouldn’t have in other circumstances, since it allows you to utilise even the smallest free periods. Have an hour between classes? Find a flat surface and do a writing sprint. Have to study all evening? Do a 25-minute sprint before you start. Secondly, it also helps you get more words down in that time, because you don’t have to worry about what you have to do next or whether your writing is any good. All you focus on is producing as many words as possible before that timer goes off.
So, if you’re a busy person, try using writing sprints here and there to increase your productivity.
4. Writing groups
Many authors enjoy the camaraderie and accountability that comes with writing with a lot of other people, whether it be in a physical space or an online group. There’s a set time everyone in the group will be writing and you keep one another company, checking up on one another’s progress and sharing motivation.
Does it increase productivity?
Not for me. This is largely a personal thing, but I actually get less writing done in the presence of other people. I’m more anxious. I get distracted by other people’s comments. And I constantly find myself wondering when the session will end. To me, writing is a solitary thing. I work best holed up in my room with no one around and no one leaving online comments about their own writing. Yes, I love checking in on others’ progress and sharing my own on Instagram, but only after my writing session has finished.
However, you may find that writing groups work for you. Maybe not being alone is just nicer for you, regardless of whether you get more words down or not. So, this one is definitely dependent on the individual.
5. Background noise
Some writers create signature playlists for each of their WIPs. Some write specific scenes to specific songs. Others use white noise or instrumentals. But it’s clear that writing with some form of background sound works for a lot of authors.
Let me start by saying that I cannot get any work done when listening to music with lyrics. So, I didn’t even try this. Instead, I tried fantasy instrumental playlists on YouTube, rainymood.com and ambient-mixer.com
Does it work?
Sometimes.
If I’m writing a fight scene, listening to epic battle music will help me write it faster. I write at my best during thunderstorms, so rainymood.com definitely increases my productivity. Ambient mixer offers a huge variety of ambient sounds to listen to, ranging from scary woods to driving with the Winchesters. “Quiet library” on ambient mixer helps a lot when I have to study, but not really when I have to write. So, yes, in certain instances, background noise helps me write faster. But, mostly, I enjoy writing in silence or with natural, real-life sounds around me.
Once again, this is purely personal. Regardless, I can definitely recommend the two websites I mentioned above.
So, that’s all I have for you today. I hope that these “reviews” can help you decide which writing hacks will work for you. Remember that my asks are always open for creative writing questions, and that post submissions are always welcome!
Reblog if you found this post useful. Comment if there are any writing hacks you’d like me to try out in the future. Follow me for similar content.

Best laptops for designing students in 2021 - (Expert Review Laptops)
Tumblr media
These are our suggested laptops for engineering students
Students looking for the best laptops for designing need a ton of force. Yet, they need a couple of different things also. Most registering personalities returning to school need to track down that perfect balance among execution and cost, and should take a gander at laptops ideal for school. Designing students, in any case, need incredible graphics cards, just as other skilled innards, to have the option to completely use programs like CAD and CAM, and also handle computational assignments that require a ton of figuring power.
All that force requires to arrive in a sensibly evaluated bundle that additionally has incredible battery life and is lightweight. While they probably won't contrast pricewise with modest laptops, they should be inside a student's spending plan. Furthermore, the best designing laptops ought to have the option to keep going the entire day on a solitary charge just as be sufficiently simple to carry around from one class to another.
We've accomplished the difficult work for you and accumulated the best laptops for designing students here, some of which are under $1,000, with perfect timing for the school year kickoff season. Since we've tried these notebooks, have confidence that you're getting quality, paying little mind to your pick.
The best laptops for designing
1. Dell XPS 15
A definitive laptop has shown up
Specifications
Central processor: tenth Gen Intel Core i5 – i7
Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics – NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti
