whenever I have an issue with a website/product/company/etc i find myself wanting to talk to a real person on the phone. You can explain things to other humans that automated systems aren't designed for or can't compute. having been the receptionist people call to resolve an issue made me appreciate the obvious fact that only humans can provide solutions to human issues. even if the person who picks up the phone is genuinely an ass, you still have options that do not exist with an online guide or bot.

that there are daily industries that exist without an available phone line or walk-up desk bothers me to the point that I don't want to interact with those places (like the self-checkouts whose intricacies are lost on even the lone min wage employee when something doesn't ring up right and their security system swears you stole something because it's glitched out and they can't prove you did or didn't because they aren't trained for that and by the time you reach the employee willing to decode the checkout robot's mysteries you sincerely wish you had just shoplifted $7 worth of bottled water)

I swear I thought it was just a generational thing that my parents and grandparents were invested in, but apparently it's something you can grow into. The machines are wrong and David at the DMV was right

Part 6 – Step Forward, Step Back, Find Your Partner Quick

Helen tried her best to console a distraught Rosemary as Officer Garcia spoke to several of his colleagues in the hallway.  Her screams had startled the director, who was already on edge due to the break-in and if the circumstances had been different, the look of surprise and horror on the officer’s face would have reduced Helen to peals of laughter.  But all the situation did was add worry to her shoulders.

For nearly two hours, the officers questioned Rosemary about the break-in, about the missing piece, and they kept asking if the museum had any enemies. As much as she wanted to say Fred Breyers out of pure spite, Rosemary kept her mouth shut – sure some people weren’t always pleased with some of their program or exhibit topics, but nothing that would result in the theft of an artifact or the physical beating of a staff member.  The two women were exhausted by the time the three cops left the building.  Rosemary laid on the couch in her office, a wet cloth over her eyes as the lingering headache from the attack ramped up under this new stress.

“Rose, are you going to be okay?”  Helen’s voice was soft, but unable to keep the worried tone at bay.

“I honestly don’t know.  That statue was the only thing missing.  I don’t know if I’m upset because I promised Robert we’d care for it or mad as hell that accepting that ugly ass hunk of bronze led to all of this and possibly hurt the museum’s reputation.”  She sighed heavily, the now cool cloth doing little to help her.  She slowly sat up, swinging her legs over the sofa’s edge.

“I wouldn’t worry about our reputation.  I’m already working with Marquetta on a press release to get ahead of the game.  Louis over at the Caller always does right by us, I’ll give him the scoop first and he’ll spin it in our favor.”  Helen leaned back.  “I’ll also call major donors today to inform them of the situation.”

“I’m sorry, Helen.  I never thought this would have happened!”  The younger woman groaned heavily as she tried to stand, but the director held out her hand to keep her from getting up.  The body stilled.

“Did Francois’ report show anything differently than what Robert had given you?”  Before Robert’s health worsened, Rosemary contacted an old friend of hers to appraise the piece as Helen wanted a second opinion for the insurance company.  The in-depth discussion about the findings with Helen was moved back first by Robert’s death and then the attack.  “Are we still looking at the same value?”

“I reread it the day before the attack to prep for the meeting that never obviously happened, and he seems to agree with the assessment Robert gave us. The statue was processed into the collections several months ago and I put in Robert’s information, but never got around to putting in Francois’ report.”

“Well, so long as the original value was imputed into the report, it’ll give us something for the insurance company.”

“Are we going to report it lost?  What if they recover it?”

“Rose, I don’t mean to sound mean, but I doubt these officers are going to find the piece.  Whoever has it is probably long gone by now.”  Helen glanced over at her.  “Unless a miracle happens.”

“Well good thing I believe in manifestation and miracles.”  For the first time in what seemed like a long while, Rosemary smiled as her old humor began to shine through.  The director smiled back, unable to let the infectious comment not affect her.

“We’ll see.”

Two Weeks Later

“Pike!  Get in here!” Carmichael’s voice carried through the small cluster of offices their department occupied.  “Pike!”

“I’m coming!  Damn, give me a second!”  Pike grumbled as he scurried from his office and across to hers.  She wasn’t a loud person, so the excited shout she gave had everyone around her curious.  As Pike entered the room, he could see his partner standing behind her desk, doing a little hop-dance.  He raised an eyebrow.

“You need to look at this!”  She pointed at the computer, her smile so big it nearly took over her face. He stopped because she was giggling, Carmichael never giggled.  Whatever this was, it had to been good.  Pike came around the desk and bent down to see what she was looking at and when his eyes landed on the screen, his eyes bugged out and his jaw dropped.

“This is one of them, isn’t it?”  Carmichael asked, her voice quivering in excitement.  He ran out of the office to the command center for the cold cases, his presence startling his crew.  He looked over at the evidence board and ripped off a picture hanging in the middle before rifling through one of the boxes to find the corresponding file. He ran back to the office.

The picture in his hand was faded with time, that grainy look of age that pictures older pictures were taking on, but despite those flaws, the sculpture in the photo matched the one in the new alert in the NSAF database.  The Cornucopia had always been breathtaking.

And it’s been missing since 1993.

The agents glanced over the dossier, reviewing the piece to try and discover how this priceless Russian artifact made its way to what looks like a small museum in Western Michigan.  Neither had reviewed the original case file closely and both felt their jaws dropping as they read further and further into its history:

A rare example of the early Ukrainian Avant Garde art movement, The Cornucopia was created by Artem Chumak, a well-known artist from Odessa. Commissioned by the then-governor of the country as a gift to Czar Nicolas II in 1907, the piece was designed to showcase the entirety of the Ukraine in a single moment.  Because the country was known for its agriculture, Chumak chose to use the image of the cornucopia as his inspiration.

The piece is made of bronze and inlaid with the following precious gemstones:

               Siberian diamond

               Ural sapphire

               Ural ruby

               Ural jade

               Russian emerald

               Russian opal

               Ukrainian pearl

Upon the fall of the Russian empire in 1917, Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna Romanov took the piece along with several others from the royal art collection when she fled Russia.  She remained owner of the piece until 1920, when she sold it to the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

In turn, the Grand Duke loaned the piece to the National Museum of History and Art and it remained with the museum until the outbreak of World War II. The ducal family took the piece back, along with several others to protect the collection from the advancement of the Nazis.

Unfortunately, the move did little good and much of the museum’s collection, including the pieces stored in the ducal family home, were taken by the Nazis, with intention of destroying them as part of the Germanization of the annexed country.

The pieces remained missing until 1949, when a team from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program (a.k.a. the Monument Men), recovered the stolen collections in a cellar in Hamburg and returned them to their respective homes.  The Cornucopia was returned to the museum and was on display until the ducal family attempted to sell the piece in 1965.  The sale failed and the family remained owners until the piece was loaned to the Luxembourg-American Cultural Museum in the U.S. in 1992.

In 1993, the piece was stolen from the museum and reported to the FBI’s Art Theft Squad days later.  The piece has yet to be recovered despite the best attempts of the team.

Pike looked at Carmichael and they grinned at each other.  While it being reported as missing didn’t mean that they had found it, it did mean that this cold case was heating up.

“Do you think we found our key?”  He didn’t want to sound hopeful, but he had to admit he was optimistic that they were much closer to solving this case.  The evidence they had been sifting through meticulously was painting a picture, but like a jigsaw puzzle, they were still missing pieces that brought it all together.

“I think we have.”  Carmichael replied.  They grinned at each other.

“Whose turn is it to go and do the interview?”  

“Mine, but could you do it?  Marty is out of town on business this week and I can’t leave Dinah alone.”  She rarely asked to trade like this, but Pike held up his hands in understanding.  They smiled, grateful they were partnered up, their work relationship had always been a smooth one.

“Sure, what could possibly happen in Michigan?”

They laughed as they started to walk to the command center.

Rosemary and Banana walked into the house, both exhausted from the day, the museum’s annual fall field trip event a cacophony of noise and excitement. The program had been exactly what Rosemary needed – something that distracted her from everything that had happened over the last month.  Her stomach hurt all day from her laughter as young kids swarmed the museum in their Halloween costumes.

As she hung up her coat, she caught something out of the corner of her eye on the kitchen table.  Walking over, Rosemary immediately recognized Fern’s loopy handwriting.

Hey sweetie, probate hasn’t cleared yet, but I heard word it should within the month.  Not to jinx it, but welcome to Saugatuck – its’ about time!  I’m also including some keys to Robert’s safety deposit boxes for safekeeping.  You can’t open them until the probate has cleared, so don’t get ahead of yourself! “Oh, thank god.”  She huffed as she opened the bulky envelope, dumping out various keys and paperwork, including the deed to the house and the store.  She had an underlying fear that something would happen, and Robert’s wishes would have been overturned and she would get nothing.  “Looks like we’re here for the time being, Baba!”

Rosemary read through the papers and picked up her phone to call Fern. For the next hour, the two women chatted about the changes, what she needed to do to register ownership with the state, and more.  After they said their good-byes, Rosemary pulled her jacket on and patted Banana on the head as she left the house.  It was dark now, but she knew the path through the cemetery and trudged up the hill towards Robert’s grave with no problem.

“You know, I’m certain you chose this spot for some reason or another, but I think it’s to punish me for not getting enough exercise.”  She groused at the polished granite, wondering how she made this walk as often as she did, and it still robbed her of her breath. She was out of shape.  

Robert’s cheeky grin beamed from the porcelain cameo embedded into the stone.  She had never seen anything like it, but he had told her it was common among Eastern European communities.  He described how they used this horribly unflattering photo for his aunt Ionna’s cameo and that he vowed he’d choose his own rather than leave it to his relatives to decide.

She sat down on the damp ground and settle in.  She was still visiting the cemetery daily and while she didn’t cry as much as she had in the beginning, her throat always felt painful after she left.  Wrapping the coat around her tightly she sighed.

“You missed our field trip day.  I know you loved volunteering for it and the kids who remembered you from last year asked where you were.”  She smiled. “I told them you were attending as a ghost and that they couldn’t see you.  I think they believed me.

“I don’t know what strings you pulled up on that cloud of yours, but Fern thinks the probate will clear next month.  I’m glad, this whole process has been a pain and thank you for not making me go through it.  I’d give up and just die if Fern weren’t in charge.  My landlord was mad I’m breaking my lease, but I know you’re excited, you always hated that place.”  She sighed as a wave of sadness washed over her.

“I miss you.”  Her voice crackled with tears.  “I miss you so much, Robert!  I hate that you’re gone.  I hate that! I hate this!  And I failed you!  They still haven’t found the statue and I contacted the FBI and I haven’t heard anything, and I don’t know what to do!”

She cried harder, her ribs hurting as if the pain she experienced weeks ago was still fresh.  She gripped her sides as she continued to sob.   She was tired and everything that had happen in the month and a half since Robert died was catching up with her.  Rosemary sat in the cold evening for hours and let her sadness out.  When she finally left, the exhaustion she felt forced her straight to bed when she arrived at the house.  In a bit of mercy, she slept a dreamless sleep for once.

“Good morning.”  The deep voice caused Marquetta to turn from the display case she was working on.  A tall man with brown hair and a kind smile stood at the front desk.  She watched as Bob ambled over to welcome him.  She couldn’t hear their conversation after that, but she kept a subtle watch on the interaction as the two men talked.  The stranger smiled again and walked past her towards the stairs and she watched up trudge up each step until he was out of sight.

“You aren’t being very subtle.”  Bob’s voice sounded behind her and Marquetta jumped at the noise.  She felt herself grow hot, grateful her dark skin hid the blush rushing across her cheeks.  She turned to look at Bob, who was grinning at her.

“Who was that?”  She tried to keep her voice steady.

“Some FBI agent wanting to talk to Rosemary.”

“FBI?”  Marquette frowned before her eyebrows shot up.  “FBI!  Oh my god! They’re here!”

“Don’t shout.  It’s rude.”

“No, Bob!  Rosemary reported that statue that got stolen to the FBI!  That means they know about it!  They’re here for that!”

“Does that mean they’ll find the men who hurt her?”  He sounded hopeful at the idea.  Even if he thought her manners were lacking, Bob was deeply upset that Rosemary had been hurt the way she had been.  If this young agent can help find her attackers, he was all for it.

“I bet they do if they find the statue.”  The two stopped talking when Rosemary and Banana entered the building. She looked up and felt awkward when she realized they were staring at her.

“Um, is something wrong?”  She sounded unsure of herself and Bob got angry, realizing that these men didn’t just rob the museum of this ugly statue, it robbed Rosemary of her self-assurance.

“Never, Rose.  There is an agent from the FBI in your office.  Marquetta says you contacted them.”  She startled, not believing that her reporting the stolen item would bring them to her front door.  They were just a small history museum in Michigan, not the Detroit Institute of Art or the Smithsonian.  She figured she’d get an email or a call, but never a real agent.

“They’re here?  Really?” Her eyes lit up when Bob nodded. She started to laugh because she didn’t know what else to do.  Marquetta walked over to hug her and the physical contact help to ground her.

“He’s good looking, too.”  Marquetta whispered in her ear.  Rosemary pulled back at the comment. “Like really good looking.  His butt is cute.”

The two women giggled at the comment and hugged again.  Picking up the leash she dropped, the curator and her furry companion went towards the stairs, hope beginning to bubble in her chest. Maybe she hadn’t failed Robert after all, she thought.  When she reached the third floor, she stopped to catch her breath before walking down to her office.

When she stepped into the doorway, she saw him standing there, looking at her walls.  She couldn’t see his face, but everything about his presence radiated kindness – something she hadn’t expected from an FBI agent.  When he turned to look at her as she cleared her throat, his face lit up in a smile and she couldn’t help but smile back.  For the first time in weeks, she felt safe.

“I’m Special Agent Marcus Pike.”  He held out his hand to her.  She took it with her customary firm grip.

“I’m Rosemary Carter.  Welcome to Fort Jamison.”

‘A happy place’

Sometime between her mid 20s and early 40s, MacKenzie Wells lost track of her health.

It began at age 25, when after struggling with infertility for five years, she and her husband adopted three young children.

All at once, they became a family of five.

Engulfed in new responsibilities, Wells went into survival mode.

She cooked a lot of pasta. Indulged in diet cola. Abandoned exercise. Put on weight.

Three years later, her doctor diagnosed Wells with Type 2 diabetes.

“I was really struggling during that time,” she said. “Our kids were little. … I was at my heaviest then.”

A former high school athlete, she lost some weight to stave off insulin dependence but couldn’t keep it off for the long term.

“I still had little kids, we were still cooking mac and cheese for them and I did not change my lifestyle,” said Wells, who lives in a home her family built on 3 acres west of Lake Odessa, Michigan.

“It’s like, ‘I’ll take care of myself later.’”

She recognized both her infertility and her diabetes as complications of polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, an imbalance of reproductive hormones leading to irregular periods and other symptoms. Other women in her family share the same diagnosis.

Shedding pounds promised relief for some of her symptoms, but her attempts over the years to make lasting changes fell flat.

Life got in the way.

“I had been trying to put more effort in, but my life was so consuming at the time that I was like, ‘I’m doing my best, but I’m just not getting where you want me to be,” Wells told her providers at Spectrum Health Medical Group Diabetes and Endocrinology.

All the while, her need for insulin increased. Her providers proposed moving her to an insulin pump to give her relief from self-injecting up to six times a day.

Breaking point

By the time she turned 40, Wells reached a breaking point. She turned to her endocrinology team for help.

“I just kind of broke down. I’m like, ‘Listen, my life’s a mess,’” she said. “I have to take care of myself.”

Hearing her story, her diabetes specialist, Gail Friedrick, PA-C, suggested she meet with Kristi Paguio, LMSW, a behavioral health specialist who provides diabetic counseling to patients like Wells.

“Gail was like, ‘You’re suffering from something we call diabetic burnout,’” Wells said.

“Really what it meant is I was depressed.”

Working with Friedrick and Paguio became the first step on Wells’ journey to restored health.

“When you start to struggle with your insulin levels, depression is a real deal,” Wells said. “I didn’t see it in myself because I was trying to be Superwoman.”

Emboldened to keep advocating for herself, Wells took the next step: She asked her primary care provider, Laurie Braker, MD, for help in finding a women’s health specialist—someone who could help her better navigate polycystic ovary syndrome in middle age.

“I just really want somebody who understands PCOS and will work with me on my issues,” Wells told her. “Two of my kids have reached adulthood, and I realized I can do this for myself now.”

New hope

Dr. Braker researched the options and referred Wells to Natasha Peoples, FNP, a specialist with the Spectrum Health Midlife, Menopause & Sexual Health team.

Peoples brought exactly the kind of knowledge and care Wells had hoped for.

“I just felt, like, easy right from the first moment I walked in with her. And she was kind and she listened—she listened to everything,” Wells said.

Peoples absorbed Wells’ concerns, reviewed her lab results, discussed her interconnected symptoms and explored possible solutions.

“She gave me a different perspective on myself that was like, ‘You can do this. There’s other ways,’” Wells said.

“She kind of gave me hope for myself.”

“I don’t see very many patients who have done what MacKenzie has—perhaps only a handful a year,” Friedrick said.

“She took charge of her diabetes rather than letting it control her life.”

‘A happy place’

Sometime between her mid 20s and early 40s, MacKenzie Wells lost track of her health.

It began at age 25, when after struggling with infertility for five years, she and her husband adopted three young children.

All at once, they became a family of five.

Engulfed in new responsibilities, Wells went into survival mode.

She cooked a lot of pasta. Indulged in diet cola. Abandoned exercise. Put on weight.

Three years later, her doctor diagnosed Wells with Type 2 diabetes.

“I was really struggling during that time,” she said. “Our kids were little. … I was at my heaviest then.”

A former high school athlete, she lost some weight to stave off insulin dependence but couldn’t keep it off for the long term.

“I still had little kids, we were still cooking mac and cheese for them and I did not change my lifestyle,” said Wells, who lives in a home her family built on 3 acres west of Lake Odessa, Michigan.

“It’s like, ‘I’ll take care of myself later.’”

She recognized both her infertility and her diabetes as complications of polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, an imbalance of reproductive hormones leading to irregular periods and other symptoms. Other women in her family share the same diagnosis.

Shedding pounds promised relief for some of her symptoms, but her attempts over the years to make lasting changes fell flat.

Life got in the way.

“I had been trying to put more effort in, but my life was so consuming at the time that I was like, ‘I’m doing my best, but I’m just not getting where you want me to be,” Wells told her providers at Spectrum Health Medical Group Diabetes and Endocrinology.

All the while, her need for insulin increased. Her providers proposed moving her to an insulin pump to give her relief from self-injecting up to six times a day.

Breaking point

By the time she turned 40, Wells reached a breaking point. She turned to her endocrinology team for help.

“I just kind of broke down. I’m like, ‘Listen, my life’s a mess,’” she said. “I have to take care of myself.”

Hearing her story, her diabetes specialist, Gail Friedrick, PA-C, suggested she meet with Kristi Paguio, LMSW, a behavioral health specialist who provides diabetic counseling to patients like Wells.

“Gail was like, ‘You’re suffering from something we call diabetic burnout,’” Wells said.

“Really what it meant is I was depressed.”

Working with Friedrick and Paguio became the first step on Wells’ journey to restored health.

“When you start to struggle with your insulin levels, depression is a real deal,” Wells said. “I didn’t see it in myself because I was trying to be Superwoman.”

Emboldened to keep advocating for herself, Wells took the next step: She asked her primary care provider, Laurie Braker, MD, for help in finding a women’s health specialist—someone who could help her better navigate polycystic ovary syndrome in middle age.

“I just really want somebody who understands PCOS and will work with me on my issues,” Wells told her. “Two of my kids have reached adulthood, and I realized I can do this for myself now.”

New hope

Dr. Braker researched the options and referred Wells to Natasha Peoples, FNP, a specialist with the Spectrum Health Midlife, Menopause & Sexual Health team.

Peoples brought exactly the kind of knowledge and care Wells had hoped for.

My father, Jeff, was an engineer at Saginaw for 14 years and helped develop the steering system for the C5 Corvette. During the mid ’90s, he began building steering systems for NASCAR’s top teams on the side. It was so successful that he decided to leave GM in 1997 and form Turn One.”

Once initial machine work is completed, the pump assembly moves to a build station for the remainder of the modifications. A new inlet fitting is placed into the recently-machined threads and is tightened to the proper torque specification.

Based on the Roethlisberger family’s longstanding history with Saginaw products, it’s unsurprising that Turn One specializes in all types of GM steering gears and pumps. “We sell new 600-series Saginaw gears and offer rebuilding services for those and the 700- and 800-series more commonly associated with vintage vehicles,” says Roethlisberger. “We rebuild original Saginaw pumps and sell new Type II pumps that we custom build for each application.” How Turn One modifies its Type II pump intrigued us. We asked Roethlisberger to explain.

The pump’s rear cover is removed along with the other internal components. The housing is inspected internally for imperfections and is then thoroughly cleaned.

“The Type II pump was original equipment on the Corvette, and many other GM vehicles,” says Roethlisberger. “With all factory-issued components and normal street driving, a Type II pump could go as far as a few hundred thousand miles with normal maintenance. Leakage is the most common issue, and that’s generally caused by seal hardening or tearing. Modifications like wide tires increase wheel load, which raises internal pressure beyond the stock pump’s intended operating level. Events like road-racing and auto-crossing can significantly increase operating temperature, which can also be hard on the stock pump.”

The pump’s internals are replaced with new proprietary pieces manufactured by Turn One. After being completely lubricated, new seals are installed and the rear cover is refitted.

When building Type II power steering pumps for customer order, Turn One begins with a new, genuine GM TC-series assembly produced in Saginaw because the inconsistent quality of remanufactured Type II pumps, and the influx of low-end off-shore replacements that have entered the market. “Every new GM pump is completely disassembled and modified internally using our own components, which reduces horsepower consumption,” says Roethlisberger. “A stock Type II pump can consume as much as 8 horsepower at 5,000 rpm. Our modifications reduce that by 3 units on average.”

Turn One’s quality comes from their attention to detail on every pump component. The flow restrictor and pressure relief valve are removed and inspected. Pump builders then customize the flow restrictor and pressure relief settings to fit the requirements and application of the vehicle to ensure maximum performance. Once adjusted, both are replaced in the pump.

The Type II pump uses an auxiliary reservoir that’s attached to it or mounted remotely. “Our proprietary modifications also reduce operating temperature,” explained Roethlisberger. “Running cooler increases longevity of the entire power steering system. Extreme fluid temperature can burn up seals and overheat the steering gear or pump. We consider 275 degrees F at the reservoir the ideal maximum operating temperature for our unit.”

The driveshaft and driveshaft bearing are removed and inspected to ensure there are no imperfections that could negatively affect pump performance. Pump builders will often hand-clean and polish internals to ensure that every pump shipped is at peak quality.

When asked what type of power steering fluid and change intervals Turn One recommends for its customers, Roethlisberger says, “Any quality full-synthetic power steering fluid is sufficient. And maintenance is never a bad thing. We recommend replacing the power steering fluid in a track car at least once annually, and maybe more frequently depending upon the application. On a typical street car, we refer our customers to the factory change intervals.”

Once the driveshaft and bearing are reassembled, the modified Type II pump is ready for quality testing.

The entry level cost for Turn One’s modified Type II pump begins at $340. And because such factors as pulley size and offset as well as hose routing of original GM pumps can vary by application, Turn One attempts to provide buyers with the closest direct-replacement assembly as possible. Turn One can also rebuild your existing Type II pump, incorporating all its proprietary modifications with prices starting at $150.

Each modified Turn One pump is tested on a custom-built power steering dyno for functionality. Tests are closely monitored by a technician to ensure quality and performance and to verify that pump settings are tuned correctly for the vehicle application.

The need for modified Type II pumps isn’t limited to owners of newer GM vehicles, however. Turn One modifies the Type II for use as a replacement for the bulky and less efficient Saginaw banjo- or teardrop-shaped pumps common to older GM vehicles using Saginaw’s 700- and 800-series steering gears. Plus, many aftermarket companies use a Type II pump in their rack-and-pinion conversions kits for customized hotrods.

The final step that Turn One performs laser etching key information such as product number and serial number onto the housing for permanent retention.

Power-assisted steering has been a mainstay in the automotive industry for many decades; it will certainly continue on for decades more, but GM no longer uses hydraulic assist in every modern application. That technology is being replaced by electric assist, which maximizes engine efficiency by eliminating the horsepower consumption associated with pump operation. But until the time comes that hydraulic-assisted power steering systems are obsolete, Turn One is one solution wherever GM’s Saginaw components are concerned.

We are now officially one week away from the start of the playoffs, and no one seems to be thinking too much about anything else.

Well, that’s not totally true, because the Sedins are retiring and I got one question about them. It’s understandable and I love talking about the damn Sedin boys, so I’m all for it, but otherwise, it’s all playoff stuff, baby.

And I want to send out an extra special thank you to the question-askers this week for not asking me anything about the MVP race, which has broken the brains of many otherwise smart people, including some very good friends of mine who maybe used to run this site. Anyway, not getting a single MVP question this week has done my heart (Hart, ha ha ha) good, and tells me I have cultivated an audience of exceptionally smart people who do not exist solely to antagonize. It’s better than I deserve!

Anyhow, lets get to it:

Brad asks: “Ratings implications aside, what would be the most interesting Cup Final match-up?”

I gotta tell ya: I truly can’t care about the ratings. I know as a professional hockey writer I’m supposed to gnash my teeth if they’re down a fraction of a percentage point, but people are gonna watch what they’re gonna watch, and if that’s another episode of Young Sheldon then what do I care?

And I have a boring answer for this one, too: I think it would be most interesting to see the Bruins and Preds absolutely smash each other. They’re the two best teams in the league, they’re both exciting to watch, they have fun personalities on both sides, etc. I would also accept Tampa and Winnipeg as a good Cup matchup. Hell, even throw in the Leafs.

Basically I think there’s a solid top five of those teams and then the rest are kind of less engaging to me as options. I just feel like there’s a big gap between them and everyone else in terms of being interesting.

Harry asks: “Should the Caps keep Trotz around?”

Of course they should.

Look, we all thought the Caps were gonna take a step back this season, and potentially kind of a big one. Instead, they won their division again, which is really not that much less competitive than it was last year in a lot of ways, and cleared 100 points again.

They lost a lot this summer to free agency and necessary trades, and it seems to have affected them very little, if at all. Some of that can be attributed to luck (they have the third-highest PDO in the league) and the overall quality of the players still sticking around, but you have to say Trotz did a pretty good job managing the reduced talent.

Put another way, the question of “Should ________ keep _______ around?” should always be followed with, “… and would his replacement do a better job?” While there are probably coaches who can maybe wring a little better of a process out of this group (they’re running a sub-48 Corsi share) but with this group, I’m not sure how much.

Basically, I don’t know how you let a guy like Trotz walk unless you’re sure his replacement would be as good or better. If Joel Quenneville becomes available, half the teams in the league might fire their coaches to try to get him, and if that’s something Washington could do, then sure.

But otherwise, I let him ride out the rest of the Caps’ window.

Tony asks: “Nashville and Winnipeg are the two obvious favorites to come out of the West, and the rest seem like they’re all in the same tier. Who’s your favorite of the bunch?”

The easy answer here was to say Minnesota. They’re still running pretty hot, and have been for months, but I’d need to see more proof of concept since Ryan Suter got hurt.

I can see San Jose doing some damage, especially if they get deep enough into the postseason to get Thornton back. Maybe LA if Quick can get on one, which has certainly happened before. And maybe, maybe you say Vegas, but I think everyone knows where I stand on them.

After that, I don’t have a lot of faith in any of the three other teams in the wild card hunt.

CF asks: “Was the review in the Panthers vs. Predators game a sign that goaltender review is trending in the right or wrong direction?”

I think it’s going in the same direction as before. Which is to say, “Nowhere anyone likes.”

Let’s not forget, everyone hates this, but the GMs did almost nothing and the league’s solution was to tell everyone, “Please stop complaining about this.” So now, instead of NHL referees in the rink not really understanding the rules and making a call anyway, you have former NHL referees watching on TV not understanding the rules and making a call anyway.

But here’s where I say something people won’t like: That overturned goal was a 50/50 call, moreso than any other controversial review in recent memory. I can see the argument that Luongo got pitchforked a little bit, and I can see the argument that he turned himself a little bit.

My whole thing now is that video review is ruining the NHL and we should probably just do away with it until we can just microchip everything and write better rules, because there’s so much subjectivity on goalie interference and offside that it’s effectively guesswork and a coin flip. Everyone hates it, so you have to change everything.

Tom asks: “Is there a model now on how to ‘rebuild on the fly’? Three years ago I thought the Bruins and Penguins windows were closed.”

I’m not sure I agree that either were really rebuilds on the fly. The Penguins just stopped giving middling wingers $5.5 million AAVs just because they were playing with Crosby and Malkin, traded for Phil Kessel, and let some expensive defensemen walk. Some of their contributors were certainly drafted and developed in-house but these are guys with skillsets better suited to what Crosby and Malkin needed all along.

With the Bruins, I’m more convinced that this was a successful rebuild on the fly, for sure. But they lucked into no one picking Charlie McAvoy before 14, and that includes THREE other defensemen. Other than that, who are their newer contributors among the young guys? In this argument I’m not counting David Pastrnak since he’s been in the league four years now.

Only one was a first-round pick (Jake DeBrusk, and they shouldn’t have taken him there), and a few more were taken in the second. I guess I’m wondering how much of a skill it is to have a handful of third- and fourth-round picks come in for you, and how much is luck. Certainly Don Sweeney seems to be doing better than most people would have expected, but he still traded away an elite defenseman for picks, so…

As with any other rebuild, I think the ones on the fly only work when teams get a little (or a lot) lucky and have elite players already. If you want to call that a formula, go for it, but it seems tough to replicate.

Cornelius asks: “How [BS] is it that Chara has only one Norris?”

Extremely. He’s the best defenseman of his generation and got screwed out of at least two, one of which (the Nick Lidstrom lifetime achievement award) was total and utter BS to an alarming extent. He’ll be a first-ballot Hall of Famer and the fact that he was only recognized as the best defenseman in the league once is a bit silly, no?

Hey speaking of underappreciated Hall-of-Fame careers…

ZA asks: “The consensus in British Columbia seems to be ‘The Twins are no-doubt HHOFers.’ Are Canucks fans in for a fun new type of disappointment?”

You never say it’s a sure thing with the Hall of Fame because those old white guys hold grudges and make dumbass decisions all the time.

That said, I think they’re pretty safe because they’ll have a pretty strong advocate in Brian Burke really banging the drum for them, and they deserve it.

Among players with at least 800 games played since the turn of the century, they’re fifth (Henrik) and seventh (Daniel) in points, with Marian Hossa — another slam-dunk pick — between them. This despite spending a lot of time on rotten teams, often playing with subpar players. They’re not quite on Jarome Iginla’s level of scoring a ton while not exactly having a lot of help, but they’re certainly in that conversation.

Walker asks: “Why do colleges put such emphasis on hiring a coach with previous ties to the school? Minnesota added Motzko, Michigan hired Pearson, and Wisconsin got Granato to name a few. Why do ADs immediately cull their options so dramatically?”

First of all, thanks for asking a college hockey question.

Second, I think this is a function of a couple issues being in play. First, alumni, who tend to donate a lot of money, love stuff like that and might see other guys as being more mercenary or not really Understanding The Culture of the program or school or whatever. Second, I think it probably engenders a lot more loyalty to the team and, if you do well, might convince you to stick around despite some potentially better offers.

Take, for example, Norm Bazin at UMass Lowell. He played there in the early 90s, met his wife there, was an assistant coach there after his playing career ended, all that stuff. He then went to other programs as an assistant, got a few years of head coaching experience in Div. 3, and got hired at Lowell. In doing so, he beat out guys with NHL pedigrees like Ron Rolston, among others.

And obviously it’s worked out great for all involved. Bazin wins a ton of games for his alma mater, and his alma mater sells a lot of tickets as a result. Plus, Bazin’s contract was expiring after this season, so last summer he interviewed for the AHL job in Utica a number of times. How serious he was about taking it isn’t for me to say, but my guess is, “Not very.” He used it to leverage a slightly better annual salary and a new deal out of the school.

In the long run, if you can get a good coach who isn’t likely to leave your school for greener pastures when the opportunity presents itself (like, say, I don’t know, Bob Motzko), that’s extremely valuable. It shouldn’t be the primary determining factor, but it should probably be in the mix.

My Testimony - Healing from Trauma and Abuse

God has brought me an amazing way. From where I was in the ashes and pits of despair to becoming an overcomer and walking in the victory. What I'm about to share with you today is not easy. My life has had many struggles and heartaches. I'm not sharing what I’m about to share with you for you to feel sorry for me or because I need to get it off my chest as it is pretty heavy subject matter. The reason I am about to share some of the hardest moments in my life as raw and real as it has happened is because of what God has done to bring me out of it. See I went through some heavy trauma and abuse in my life. Not just once or by one abuser and not just one form of abuse. I experienced every form of abuse and trauma you can imagine from sexual abuse from a very early age to physical and mental abuse. The first time I met my first abuser and the one who abused me sexually I was three years old. He was our next door neighbour and soon his daughter and I were best of friends. We still are to this day. The first encounter with him at 3 years old I was scared of him. I saw dark figures surrounding him when I walked into his backyard one day by mistake and stared at him through the window. I went home terrified of this man only running into him for a few seconds and went home and told my mom a bad man I was scared of lived next door. She laughed thinking it was funny. Later I discovered that this was one of the first incidents that led to me not trusting myself and my own gut feeling as well as my judgement on hearing Gods voice. This was not discovered till I was 41 and at a cleansing stream retreat where it was revealed to me in a vision where God healed that brokenness. I was later abused by this man until I was 14 and we moved to Canada and therefore were no longer neighbors. This brought a huge amount of shame and guilt and self-hatred to how I saw myself. I don't exactly remember when he first started to abuse me but I also don't remember a time when he wasn't. I know it was really bad and escalated between ages 12-14. After that I blocked out this memory. I will share more on this later.

I was away from this man for the moment but my mom got remarried as my parents divorced when I was 3. This man also abused me but this time it was physical abuse. I was beat and hit and went to school with hand print bruises on me from him pinning me to the ground. This was done not even when I did something wrong, but even if I got a phone call from a friend. That was enough to set off his temper. I had to take myself to the hospital several times for concussions due to this but yet never said a word to anyone.

I moved to my dad's shortly after this to get away from him but that was not always a whole lot better. There was a lot of fighting there as well and also a lot of manipulation and emotional abuse. I started turning the abuse on myself and started abusing myself as well. I began to be self-destructive including cutting myself. I was numb and broken and depressed inside and I always felt unworthy and dirty and had very low self-esteem. I began college at the local community college and I was working three part time jobs on top of that. I was getting roughly 3-4 hours of sleep at night. It was during this time that the memories of the abuse came flooding back as my friend's dad was also a professor at the school and started stalking me in the halls. I had a nervous breakdown that led to my first hospitalization. There were many more to follow. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety and later told I was bipolar.

When my mom was in the hospital after having a heart attack and quadruple bypass even though I was an adult this man beat me again. This time for the last time. All over letting the dog in the house which my mother told me was ok to do. He pinned me to the ground and bashed my head against the tile floor. He also threatened to shoot and kill my dog and he had a gun ready. This time I called the police on my cellphone and he ended up staying in jail and his guns taken away.

I had one more man that abused me. This one I let into my life on my own as I married him. Things got bad quickly and the violence, emotional and verbal abuse escalated fast. He worked at a beer warehouse and spent his paycheck on beer rather than bills or groceries. We went without heat often in winter. He would even take my car keys and take the phone right out of the jack and take them to work with him so I couldn't call anyone for help even if it were an emergency. I was so sick at this point that I couldn't use my legs. They simply couldn't hold me up and so I used a wheelchair the majority of the time. I also had trouble even getting to the bathroom on my own and often just left alone to lay in bed feeling completely alone and helpless. This was probably the lowest point in my life. I wanted to die. I felt dead inside. Along with the other forms of abuse he also forced himself on me when he came home from work drunk. He made me feel useless, unworthy, broken and empty. I was lost.

One day one of my friends came over and I finally had the courage to tell her what was really happening in my life and at home and how I felt I no longer even wanted to live. How I felt suicidal even. On the subject of suicide, because of the abuse and trauma and how horrible and empty and alone I felt I had attempted suicide multiple times. Luckily I was not a success at this. My friend that stopped by took me home to her house and let me stay with her and helped me get away from my ex husband. This was not an easy process though. He not only threatened my life but everyone that helped me. Those friends' life's as well as the pastor's life that tried to help me get out as we turned to her for marriage counselling but with no success on his part to do much participation. She finally realized that it was a matter of safety and suggested I stay in a domestic violence shelter and we all got a personal protection order out on him. It was the scariest time of my life.

This abuse affected me for a long time, I had nightmares and flashbacks, I'd get so sick I'd throw up from just the trauma of the memories.

So where was God through all this you ask? Well He was right there with me. I just couldn't see it because I was clouded with the cloud of depression, shame, guilt, rejection and self-hatred but He was still there none the less. And he eventually got me out of it as well. I'll share more on this later.

My relationship with Him at this point was a bit distant. I grew up going to a conservative Lutheran church where I also attended school. I remember as a young child loving church service and the worship music and I held onto that feeling tightly, but God still felt distant. I had loving grandparents who also took me to church with them and they were my saving grace. If it weren't for them I don't think I'd be the person I am today. They were nurturers and loved greatly. They were the two people that never once mistreated me or said anything hurtful or critical and like I said they were my saving grace. They were my heroes.

When I was in third grade my mom was working many hours as a nurse and she would watch kids during the week to be with me and cover a double shift at the hospital on weekends. Because of her busy schedule we stopped attending church for the most part. This led to being excommunicated from church followed by me being removed from the school. I then attended public school from 4th grade on and we never really regained a church life.

It wasn't until I was a young adult that I started attending church again. I first tried a catholic church during the time I lived at my dad's but it didn't really fit me. Still I was searching. I didn't find what I wanted though so I didn't continue looking long. When I moved to Texas in my 20s I started attending a unity church. It wasn't what I needed but it was a stepping stone. When I moved back to Michigan I moved in with my friends I mentioned earlier that got me out of an abusive relationship with my ex husband. They were a wonderful Christian family who later brought me to the Lord and I began attending church with them. This is actually where I met my ex-husband and since you already know that situation and how it ended I won't repeat myself. However, I will state that once others found out about the abuse after I came forward instead of making him leave the church they made us leave instead. So, the two churches up till this point that I regularly attended I was told to leave from even though I didn't do anything wrong. This turned me away from church for a while and I had a bit of a rebellious period. It didn't last long but it was still there and it still effected my walk with God. He felt even more distant now as I felt rejection from church.

After I was free from my ex-husband I moved back to my condo in Ann Arbor. The abuse however and distance I felt from God still affected me. I was struggling but still had a desire to find what I was so desperately searching for. A friend recommended a church for me to try. It was the Ann Arbor Vineyard. I attended a bit reluctantly and a bit shyly sticking to myself. I finally felt home here. I finally found God here and Christ as my savior. I finally felt acceptance and freedom here. I felt the beginning of healing and wholeness but God was not even close to being done with me. I was baptized in the spirit at this church. Met some great spiritual mentors, and experienced some of the first stages of a deeper healing and a deeper relationship with Him. Even though I loved this church and always will and I am forever grateful for what I experienced here I also got hurt here as well. How or why doesn't matter so much but I stopped attending regularly and started partying a little harder. I wasn't celebrating but rather drowning my pain and struggling with my mental health.

Skip a few years ahead and I find out my mom has breast cancer so I moved back to Canada to help her out. I went through a really bad time of depression that eventually led to being hospitalized again. Many of you may remember this time and just how low I was. I did get help and got back up again but it was a long struggle. I was attending wpa at that time but I was struggling both in my mental health and my spiritual health. At times I wasn't even sure what I really believed.

When I went to camp in summer 2016 life changed. I received so much healing from God through prayer and words of encouragement from so many there. I felt the pain, anxiety and depression lift completely. I felt different, I looked different, and I was different. It was life changing for me and many remember my testimony from then. However I struggled when I got back and still slipped back into old ways. The depression and anxiety also returned, not as bad but still there.

My mom while I love her with all my heart often criticizes and puts me down and I still slipped back into the depression and doubt again. I was still doing a great deal better than before and even started working. I really wasn't looking for a job when I got my job, I was looking for a bus. I met Sandy at work and she became my boss. I liked and felt comfortable with her right away which is not the usual for me. I loved working there but I was still struggling with depression and anxiety. I started having nightmares of the abuse again and had one panic attack so bad it led to taking a month off of work. I wasn't even aware at the time that it was the abuse triggering my panic attacks. After a month off and starting back up I felt like I needed to talk to my boss about what triggered my panic attacks. She had an uncanny way of calming me down when I had one at work and therefore I felt safe to talk to her about it. I had no idea however how much support she would be or how much of an impact this would have on me. I felt strength and I felt freedom in just telling someone the whole story and was overwhelmed with the love and support I was given. My nightmares stopped and they changed to her being a superhero with me fighting the bad guys with me. We even ran them over with the bus. I felt a strength and confidence I have never felt before. This lovely lady now means the world to me and I am forever grateful for her support. It has given me the strength to get to this point in being able to publicly share my full testimony in a raw uncut form.

I also feel like God is going to use this to help others greatly as many people suffer in silence from both mental health as well as trauma and abuse. There is a stigma attached to both of these that needs to be broken. Breaking the silence breaks the stigma so that is why I am choosing to break the silence and share this so openly and publicly. It is hard, it is frightening and terrifying, but in that there is also freedom and strength. As Joyce Myers always says "I may not be where I need to be, but I'm far from where I used to be." God has brought me so far in my journey, in my healing and with my walk with him. He has brought me out of the brokenness, out of the shame, and guilt and fear. He has made me unbroken, fused me back together. He has made me whole and has me walking in victory. He never meant for any of this to happen but he certainly will use it for His good and His glory. What Satan meant to kill and destroy God will use for good. That is certainly what He is doing here. If I reach just one hurting person who has struggled through what I have it will make it worth it. I highly doubt that God is stopping there though. I feel He will use me to reach many.

NFL draft profile: No. 13 — Western Michigan WR Corey Davis, health question but terrific talent

Western Michigan WR Corey Davis 6-foot-3, 209 pounds

Key stat: Davis is the all-time FBS leader in receiving yards (5,278) and the all-time Mid-American Conference leader in receptions (332) and TD receptions (52). He also is the only FBS player with more than 300 receptions, more than 5,000 yards and more than 50 touchdowns in a career.

The skinny: Emerging from a tough upbringing in Chicago, Davis accepted his first FBS scholarship offer from then-Broncos head coach P.J. Fleck, Davis nearly broke the 1,000-yard mark as a freshman (67-941-6 receiving) as a true freshman standout. He surpassed the 1,400-yard mark in both his sophomore and junior seasons and combined for 167 catches and 27 TDs in those 25 games. Davis then raised his game again following the graduation of Daniel Braverman and had a brilliant senior season in leading Western Michigan to a 13-0 mark before losing to Wisconsin in the Cotton Bowl. Named the MAC’s Offensive MVP, Davis caught 97 passes for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns — all of which ranked in the top eight nationally in FBS.

After suffering an ankle injury in January and having surgery to repair it, Davis was unable to play in the Senior Bowl or work out at the NFL scouting combine or his pro day. Although the injury is considered minor, the lack of a timed 40-yard dash is still a bit of a hangup for some NFL evaluators. Davis turns 23 in November.

Best-suited destination: We think Davis profiles as an excellent sidekick to a speed receiver, as a possible co-No. 1, similar to what teams such as the Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers have. For teams that favor size over raw speed — and give extra credit to competitiveness — Davis makes a lot of sense. Clubs that could be especially interested in Davis’ services include the Steelers, Cardinals, Eagles, Cowboys, Panthers, Bears, Chiefs, 49ers, Texans, Raiders, Titans and Ravens.

Upside: Elite production — some of the gaudiest receiving totals in FBS history. Although he was a big fish in a smaller pond, Davis thrived despite extra defensive attention and played for a former receiver in Fleck, who is known to be demanding and detail-oriented with the position. Showed he can produce against top competition, such as 2015 vs. Michigan State (10-154-1 receiving) and in road wins over Northwestern and Illinois in 2016, with a combined 11 catches and 167 yards. Caught five passes or more in 41 of his 50 college games.

Excellent work in the red zone — scored 26 TDs in his final 19 college games. Good body length. Can body up smaller defensive backs. Does good work downfield and can track the ball easily in the air. Can make the first man miss and will power through initial contact well. Has good gear-up speed once he’s on the move and can pull away from defensive backs when needed, as he did here against Ohio:

Carries a chip on his shoulder from a difficult childhood, and is shows in the passion with which he plays. Has improved each season, working on the little details to get better. Openly has spoken about how he didn’t know how to watch film when he first arrived in Kalamazoo but now enjoys the meticulous process. Has added strength in the weight room and improved his playing speed. Shows effort in blocking. Battles for the ball in jump-ball situations — witness his final college touch, this remarkable touchdown catch on a terribly thrown pass against Wisconsin that was befitting of Davis’ college career:

Smart, humble and coachable. Doesn’t seek the spotlight but is accountable and reliable. Plays hurt. Football matters to him. Can be an occasional trick-play option — 2-of-2 passing for 40 yards in his career.

Downside: Not a vertical threat, per se, and has had trouble separating at times. Increased refinement of his route running is required. Barely faced any NFL-caliber cornerbacks last season. Was held relatively in check in matchups against better secondary talent (Ohio State and Central Michigan in 2015, Wisconsin in 2016). Suffered through a rash of drops last season — one team charted Davis with 12, which is high even for his volume of passes — that was the one big step back in his game in 2016. Small hands (9 1/4 inches) for his frame.

Davis still could more more physical in his play — both as a receiver and in blocking. There’s a cap to his athletic ability and his raw speed likely will never be high end. With his lack of exceptional speed or burst off the line, Davis with have to get even better at using his hands to get a free release. Likely will see a lot of press coverage as a rookie, if for no other reason than MAC corners were not big or strong enough to do that, so he was rarely tested in this way. Scouts have seen a little stiffness in his hips and he possesses only average change-of-direction skills, even with his good body control.

Very little obvious special-teams value. Lined up outside and in the slot, but he might not be a typical slot receiver in the NFL. Barely used as a runner (three carries, 13 yards in career). Medical history not overly concerning but still notable with a bit of wear and tear.

Scouting hot take: “He’s got a great story. He’s a tough kid. He’s self-made in a lot of ways but has some real natural ability. He reminds me just a little of Brandon Marshall when he came out — not nearly as gifted physically but just with just how he plays … and without all the headaches.” — AFC receivers coach

Player comp: We view Davis as a similar prospect to Michael Crabtree or perhaps Michael Thomas last year (only without the high-end college experience).

Expected draft range: We still believe Davis has a shot to be a first-round pick, but it’s not the mortal lock it appeared a few months ago. The lack of a 40 time is still a sticking point for some scouts who worry about his long speed, justifiably or not. We’ll hedge and say that Davis will be a top-35 pick.
