BIM for Building Services: How it is Changing the Construction Industry?
BIM, or Building Information Modeling, is a digital representation of a building structure's physical and operational characteristics. Due to its various advantages, it is quickly gaining in popularity among construction professionals. BIM has already transformed how architects, engineers, and contractors work together during the construction process.
Let us take a look at how BIM is changing the construction industry when it comes to building services.
1. Enhanced collaboration and communications
With BIM for building design services, everyone involved in building projects can work together and share information more effectively. By providing a centralized hub for data and information sharing, BIM helps to ensure that all parties involved are on the same page. As a result, less time is wasted on fixing mistakes and redoing tasks.
2. Improved accuracy and quality of designs
BIM makes it possible for architects, engineers, and MEP specialists to preview their work in 3D before it is built. This aids in the resolution of potential conflicts between the various building services prior to construction using BIM coordination. As a result, design errors and omissions are less likely to occur, and the designs are more precise and high-quality.
3. Reduced cost and project duration
By finding design mistakes and clashes early on, BIM helps reduce building project costs and timelines. This makes the building process more efficient and less prone to errors. In addition to cutting down on waste and extra expenses, BIM helps ensure that just the right amount of materials are ordered with the help of 4D BIM scheduling and 5D BIM cost estimation services.
4. Improved sustainability and energy efficiency
By using BIM, architects can test out various design iterations and evaluate a structure's efficiency in terms of energy use. As a result, the building's environmental effect and operational costs can be minimized while at the same time is optimized for energy efficiency.
5. Enhanced maintenance and asset management
Maintenance and asset management can benefit from having a complete and current record of the building's architectural, structural, and MEP systems, which is provided by BIM. Because of this, maintenance expenses are decreased and the building's lifespan is lengthened.
Conclusion
In terms of building services, BIM is revolutionizing the construction business. Among its many advantages are better teamwork and communication, more precise and high-quality design work, shorter project timelines and lower overall costs, greater sustainability and energy efficiency, and more efficient asset management. BIM will remain an important tool for enhancing the productivity and quality of building projects as the AEC industry develops.

The far right has made gains in Austria and Germany, the first national election estimates released by the European Parliament show.
In Austria, the far-right Freedom Party (part of the Identity and Democracy group, ID) would have six seats, according to the estimates. If those numbers are confirmed, the Freedom Party will have doubled its number of seats and leapfrogged the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) and Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) — which are both predicted to get 5 MEPs.
In Germany, the conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union finished first in Sunday’s election in the country, according to early estimates. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is projected to finished second, ahead of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD).
Data was made available by the Parliament for Austria, Cyprus, Germany, Greece and the Netherlands.
In Cyprus, YouTuber Fidias Panayiotou, standing as an independent, appears to have earned a seat, with estimates putting him in third place behind the center-right DISY and far-left AKEL, and ahead of the social-democrats in DIKO.
The far-right ELAM received 10.4 percent of votes, according to the first estimates, making it the fifth-largest political force.
The Parliament’s early estimates have the ID group getting seven seats in the Netherlands, which is in line with exit polls following the Dutch election on Thursday. All seven of those seats would belong to Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party.
Wilders’ party was beaten into second place by a Labor-Green alliance, but in the EU Parliament the MEPs for that alliance would be split between political groups.
In Greece, initial exit polls show the ruling conservative New Democracy party leading by a significant margin, but significantly weakened compared to previous support.
New Democracy is projected to receive between 28 percent and 32 percent. This is down from the 40.5 percent it got last June in national elections, and also misses the target it set for itself, which was the support it got in the last European election (33.1 percent).

The recent European Elections have been hailed as a successful exercise in democracy with a record voter turnout but for the Roma, Europe's largest and most discriminated ethnic minority, the election results were a disappointment. Population figures are uncertain but according to the most quoted estimates, 10-12 million Roma are living in the EU and the candidate countries. They continue to face high levels of discrimination in their daily lives and serious challenges in accessing equal rights and services in housing, education, employment and health care. They are also far from being empowered in their home countries and in the EU. The outgoing European Parliament included four members (out of 705 members) of Roma origin, from Spain, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia, i.e. about 0,5 % of the total. The incoming Parliament, with 720 members, will not include any Roma MEP, according to the Brussels based Roma Foundation for Europe. According to their information, there were three Roma candidates from the Czech Republic, two from Slovakia, three from Hungary and one from Bulgaria but none of them were elected. All of these countries have relatively large Roma minorities. Romania, the country with the largest Roma minority, did apparently not include any Roma candidate in the election lists. Thorsten Schröder, lead communications advisor for the Roma Foundation, cautioned that it is important to note that it is difficult to make assumptions about a candidate's ethnic background if it is not publicly declared. Asked how many Roma MEPs could theoretically have been elected, in proportion to the size of the Roma minority, he replied that there is no straightforward answer to the question because of their fragmented number across EU member states. A cautious estimate, comparing their number with the population in a small country like Denmark (ca 6 million inhabitants) would result in up to 15 MEPs.

Is it a coincidence that the election night map on TVN24 in Poland used the colors of the Ukrainian flag to designate which party was ahead in each województwo (province)? 🙂🇺🇦🇵🇱
In any case, here are the final results from the official election authority the Państwowa Komisja Wyborcza.
The official results in the number of seats per party were amazingly close to the exit polls. While the specific number of seats per party differed slightly, the Sunday night Ipsos poll and these official results both give the three pro-democracy parties a total of 248 seats.
The official turnout (74.38%) was more than a percentage point higher than the already high exit poll estimate. This is the highest turnout since the 1989 election which saw the end of communism in Poland.
When you vote, you win.
People who have lived under authoritarianism don't need to be prodded into voting.
Tim Mak is an American journalist in Ukraine. He tells about Marcin Banasiak, a Polish citizen who is doing humanitarian work in Eastern Ukraine. Long story short: Just to vote in Sunday's election, Marcin spent 26 hours traveling from Kharkiv to Warsaw. That required traveling almost the entire length of Ukraine and then over to Warsaw via the border city of Chełm.
Read Tim's account of Marcin's vote quest at Mastodon.
If Marcin can spend 26 hours (traveling one way) to help rescue democracy in Poland, we should not complain about the minor inconveniences related to voting in the US.
American historian and journalist Anne Applebaum lives in Poland with her husband Radek Sikorski who happens to be an MEP and former cabinet member in the previous Donald Tusk government. In The Atlantic (archived) on Monday she wrote about what led to the pro-democracy victory at the polls.
[A]bout 73 percent of Poles voted across the country, far more than the number that voted in 1989, and in some places the turnout was higher than 80 percent. In Warsaw, Gdansk, Lublin, and Wroclaw, as well as some European cities, voters stood in line for many hours, polling stations ran out of ballots, and some people were able to vote only long after the polls had been scheduled to close. At one Warsaw polling station near midnight, an election worker wept on live television, thanking her compatriots for showing up in such large numbers. How did they do it? Anger is a powerful emotion, and over the past year, PiS made a lot of people angry. Repeated PiS corruption scandals—corruption being one of the inevitable results of politicized judges, police, and prosecutors—certainly helped the opposition. So did high inflation, partly created by PiS’s decision to spend heavily on social programs as the election approached. So did the decision by PKN Orlen, a state-owned oil company, to lower gasoline prices in advance of the vote, thereby causing shortages around the country, as well as general mockery. But this turnout was produced by positive emotions too. Donald Tusk, the leader of the Civic Coalition, pointedly used the language of civic patriotism rather than angry nationalism. Thousands of volunteers came together to organize election-monitoring teams. Hundreds of thousands of people marched in two major demonstrations in Warsaw, carrying Polish and European Union flags; others joined a series of big public meetings around the country.
The new government, when it assumes office, won't be perfect – because no humans are perfect. But it will be enormously better. And similar to Democrats in the US after Trump, the presumed three-party coalition in Poland will spend a lot of time repairing democratic institutions degraded by PiS.

Unsold clothing may no longer be destroyed in Europe
More than 100,000 tons of discarded clothing ends up in a desert in Chile
Europe is putting a stop to the throw-away culture through a ban on destruction[1] and a digital product passport with information about shelf life and repairability. No more mass destruction of clothing and other unsold merchandise.[2]
Every second in Europe, a full garbage truck of clothing is burned or dumped[3]. And every year, an estimated 11 to 32 million unsold and returned garments are destroyed. Europe has been wanting to reduce this gigantic waste for some time. The European Member States and the European Parliament reached an agreement to this end on Monday evening 4-12: Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation[4]. The aim of the 'eco design law' is to make many products more repairable, reusable and recyclable. A product passport and a ban on destruction of unused goods are the key measures.
1. What is a digital product passport?
Consumers are already somewhat familiar with this: the energy label on refrigerators and washing machines gives an indication of their sustainability. That label (or product passport) has had an enormous impact on making those appliances more energy efficient.
The European Parliament and the EU member states now have an agreement to roll out the digital passport more widely and to deepen its content. First of all, almost all products on the European market will have to have such a passport: from car tires and steel to washing tablets and cosmetics to clothing or smartphones. The only exceptions are food, medicine, cars and weapon systems, for which there are separate regulations.
In addition to any energy consumption, the passport also contains information about the origin, composition, repair and disassembly options of the product. This should also make it easier to repair and recycle them. “People can know at a glance which product is the most durable or easiest to repair,” said MEP Sara Matthieu (Green), who was rapporteur in the negotiations.
2. What does the ban on destruction mean?
Initially, the ban applies to textiles. Globally, 92 million tons of textile waste are produced annually. A large portion of these are returned or unsold goods. In two years' time, they may no longer be destroyed, but must be reused or recycled. This ban will eventually be extended to electronics and electrical appliances. Massive quantities of these are also destroyed every year, especially cheaper items that are not sold or have been returned to the manufacturer.
The new rule goes hand in hand with stricter requirements for composition, repairability and disassembly of goods. The details will be worked out product by product by the European administration, but some guiding principles are a ban on adhesives, the absence of toxic substances, the obligation to have spare parts available and, above all, to offer them at an affordable price. The passport should eventually lead to a 'repair score', comparable to the energy label.
Matthieu (Green) expects a huge impact on the consumer market. 'Instead of offering disposable products for mass consumption, companies will offer many more services through robust devices. So to speak, you will no longer buy a washing machine, but an number of wash cycles.'
3. How comprehensive are the measures?
That depends on the control. The product passport is also an important instrument for this. Europe is counting on the famous 'Brussels effect': foreign producers will have to adapt their products if they want to maintain access to the gigantic European consumer market. Although the European consumer organisation BEUC[5] warns against loopholes. The organisation mainly sees a risk that international online platforms such as Amazon or Alibaba will circumvent the new law.
4. Is this agreement now final?
It has already rounded the most important cape. The agreement was finalised in the so-called trialogue negotiations between the European Parliament, the European Council and the Commission. Now it must be approved by Parliament and the Member States, but that counts as a formality.

The proposal builds on the existing Ecodesign Directive, which currently only covers energy-related products. https://commission.europa.eu/energy-climate-change-environment/standards-tools-and-labels/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements/sustainable-products/ecodesign-sustainable-products-regulation_en
[5] The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC, from the French name Bureau Européen des Unions de Consommateurs, "European Bureau of Consumers' Unions") is an umbrella consumers' group, founded in 1962. Based in Brussels, Belgium, it brings together 45 European consumer organisations from 32 countries (EU, EEA and applicant countries). BEUC represents its members and defends the interests of consumers in the decision process of the Institutions of the European Union, acting as the "consumer voice in Europe". BEUC does not deal with consumers’ complaints as it is the role of its national member organisations.

Through MEP BIM modeling, engineers can plan and visualize system interactions in a virtual environment, ensuring that these systems work seamlessly together.
Structural BIM Services Structural BIM modeling focuses on the design and analysis of a building’s structural components. From foundations to beams, columns, and load-bearing walls, structural BIM ensures that all elements support the architectural vision while adhering to safety and engineering standards.
Clash Detection and Resolution One of BIM’s biggest advantages is its ability to perform clash detection. This process identifies potential conflicts between different building systems, such as MEP and structural elements, and resolves them before construction begins. By minimizing on-site conflicts, clash detection reduces delays and prevents cost overruns.
BIM for Facility Management After construction, BIM data becomes an invaluable resource for facility management. Facility managers can use BIM models to access information about the building’s systems, maintenance schedules, and life-cycle data. This integration of BIM with facility management streamlines maintenance tasks, reduces downtime, and extends the building’s life span.

Viktor Orban and his right-wing Fidesz party won the European elections in Hungary with 44.5 per cent of the votes cast – but it was the party’s worst result in a European election and it lost two of its 13 seats in the European Parliament.
Rising political star former Fidesz member Peter Magyar and his two-month-old TISZA (Respect and Freedom) party came second with almost 30 per cent, taking seven seats and crushing all other opposition parties. The turnout was a record 58 per cent.
The liberal Momentum party lost both its seats, and the left-wing Democratic Coalition lost half its support, while the far-right Mi Hazánk (Our Homeland) party won 6.7 per cent and one seat in the European Parliament.
In local elections, held at the same time as the European elections, Fidesz won most of the counties and half of the larger cities, but the results were far from a landslide victory.
Nevertheless, Prime Minister Orban celebrated the results in a late-night speech. “We have won two elections, we have defeated the old and the new opposition, and we will defeat them in the future, no matter what they call themselves,” he said, clearly alluding to TISZA. Orban repeated his familiar culture-war message: “Stop migration, stop gender, stop war, stop Brussels,” while the party elite stood behind him.
The real winner of the night, 43-year-old Peter Magyar, a former bureaucrat, hailed his better-than-expected result as “a political earthquake and the Waterloo for Orban’s power machine. “An era has ended, the future has begun,” he told cheering supporters, adding that TISZA was now the largest opposition party in Hungary, only a few hundred thousand voters behind the ruling party. “We will be ready for the next elections,” he said.
The race was unexpectedly close in Budapest, where the incumbent mayor, the liberal-leftist Gergely Karacsony, was only 350 votes ahead of challenger David Vitezy, who was running on the ticket of the small Green party, but also backed by Fidesz after the ruling party withdrew its own candidate two days before the election. TISZA won 30 per cent of the vote in Budapest, coming neck-and-neck with Fidesz, a highly unusual constellation in Hungary that could make the capital a litmus test for the country.
Poland’s Tusk ‘so happy’ with win
In Poland, the ruling Civic Platform, KO, won the European elections with 37 per cent of votes compared to 36 per cent for Law and Justice, PiS. The third best performing party, the far-right Confederation, won an estimated 12 per cent of the votes, followed by the two parties joining KO in the governing coalition: 7 per cent voted for Third Way and 6 per cent for the Left. KO is expected to get 21 seats in the European Parliament, PiS 20, Confederation six, Third Way three and the Left three.
The victory was especially important for Tusk, as PiS has defeated KO in all European elections in the past decade. “We waited ten years to get the first place on the podium, I am so happy,” Tusk said of the results. But PiS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski insisted the results showed “the road to presidential elections is open”. Presidential elections are due in Poland next year.
While KO performed well, its coalition partners did worse than they might have expected, while the far-right Confederation had a very good result, likely winning six seats in the European Parliament compared to none at the moment.
In Czechia, the opposition ANO party of former Prime Minister Andrej Babis came first with 26 per cent of the votes, taking seven of the country’s 21 MEP mandates, although with a smaller than expected lead over the government SPOLU coalition, which won 22 per cent of the votes. “Thank you very much everyone! You’re amazing,” Babis tweeted as the results were released.
The surprise in this year’s ballot came with the breakthrough of the populist anti-system Prisaha and Motorists coalition led by Filip Turek, which took more than 10 per cent of the vote, ahead of the communist-led Stacilo coalition, on 9.5 per cent.
Coalition members STAN and the Pirates underperformed compared to five years ago with 9 and 6 per cent of the votes respectively. So did the far-right alliance of the SPD and Trikolora, which just barely made it past the 5-per-cent threshold. The turnout was more than 36 per cent, compared to less than 29 per cent in 2019.
In neighbouring Slovakia, more than a third of the electorate also turned out to vote to fill the 15 seats allocated to the country in the European Parliament – about half a million more than five years ago and a record in the EU’s traditionally worst-performing nation in terms of turnout.
The liberal and pro-European Progressive Slovakia came first with 28 per cent of the votes, a few percentage points ahead of the ruling Smer of Prime Minister Robert Fico, on 25 per cent. The far-right Republika emerged as a potent political force, with almost 13 per cent.
