her outings to the city have become more and more frequent. the beach is a good place for hedonism, but there's only so much alcohol, drugs and sex can do for her before she grows tired of it. she usually goes for the jewelry stores, the museums so she can steal artwork for her room, the theater so she can play the piano that she can't fit in a car to bring home. although she can appreciate the beauty of nature, it hasn't been her usual destination.

today, it's just what she needs. she hasn't had any sleep since the game last night, and she wonders if it's the tiredness in her bones or the scenery around her that's making everything look and feel softer ━━ the golden sun rays invading the pale blue of the sky, the singing of the birds, the colorful trees reflected in the water below. it's beautiful. it's quiet and the closest to peaceful she's felt in a long time. she wishes she had a camera, a notebook, an ounce of artistic ability to capture this feeling somehow. all she has is her memory, so she just sits down and lets herself take it all in, attempts to fit all these colors and shapes and sounds into her mind.

Take a Train from Hiroshima to Nagasaki This Summer

As I was born in Hiroshima and my grandfather experienced the Hiroshima bombing at the age of 5 on the outskirts of the city, the Hiroshima bombing has been a crucial and relevant historical event for me. I visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum every chance I get, since childhood, and I offer a minute of silence on August 6 at 8:15 AM watching the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony on TV every year. So, I’ve grown up reading and hearing Hiroshima literature and relating myself to this horrendous historical event. Last winter I visited the newly-renovated peace museum when I visited my grandparents for New Year’s. But as I walked out of the museum it made me wonder: Why isn’t there any contextualization of the bombing? There is no mention of the Pacific War or anything before August 6. If you look at the webpage of The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the museum’s mission says: To convey to the world the horrors and inhumane nature of nuclear weapons and spread the message of “No More Hiroshimas”  -- through A-bomb artifacts and testimonies of the atomic bomb survivors. NO wonder. Since their mission is dedicated to telling the tragedy of Hiroshima, there is no need to tell a single story about how the war led to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Sheer curiosity took me to the webpage of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum because unfortunately I had never had a chance to pay a visit there and I wanted to know how Nagasaki does the same. But what I found was an interesting difference between the Hiroshima Peace Museum and the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum. The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum devotes one third of their exhibition to placing the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki not only in the context of Japanese history, but also of the history of nuclear weapons and their development. The war history exhibition, titled “The Road to the Atomic Bombing,” looks from the Manchurian Incident in 1931 to the Japan-China War, and follows up with the Pacific War to the defeat of Japan in 1945. They also have sections for the history of the atomic bomb development (especially the Manhattan Project), the nuclear arms race in the Cold War era, and the danger of testing the atomic bomb. It inlcudes the Daigo Fukuryumaru incident, where a Japanese fishing boat happened to encounter a hydrogen bomb test in Bikini Atoll in 1954, and the radiation damage to uranium miners in the US and the Soviet Union.

Reading through the websites of both museums about the atomic bombing, I came to realize that the two museums have different goals and approaches in their exhibitions. Hiroshima points out the tragedy of Hiroshima and is trying to create the discourse of “No More Hiroshimas”: Nuclear weapons are inhumane and must not be used again because they caused such atrocities in Hiroshima. Nagasaki, on the other hand, takes a comprehensive view. Nagasaki does tell what happened on August 9 as Hiroshima does: A-bomb artifacts, testimonies of Nagasaki survivors are there. But there are sections of exhibition dedicated to contextualizing the Nagasaki bombing in the context of Japanese military history or the history of nuclear power emphasize that Hiroshima and Nagasaki are a part of the nuclear tragedy for human beings as a whole. It resonates with Kyoko Hayashi’s (Nagasaki survivor) remark in From Trinity to Trinity when she visits the Trinity Site in New Mexico: “As soon as I started walking through the small passage within the fenced area led by a guide, my always-present awareness of being a victim disappeared from my mind.” When Hayashi visits the Trinity Site, she comes to feel compassion for Trinity as a survivor of the atomic bomb, beyond the differences of nations, enemy-friends, time, and distance.

I regret that I haven’t ever visited Nagasaki. I thought that the Hiroshima and Nagasaki experiences were similar, and the museums would be similar too. But I was wrong. They do carry different missions and messages, and it is important to visit both places and museums (and the Trinity Site as well) if you want to understand the atomic bombings more completely. A sad thing is that my perspective – visiting only one site (mostly Hiroshima) – is not rare for a lot of visitors, especially foreign visitors. In fact, Hiroshima attracts more visitors than Nagasaki, and the proportion of foreign visitors is bigger for the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum: Hiroshima has 1,522,453 visitors (434,838 foreign visitors) in 2018, but Nagasaki attracts 705,314 visitors (including 135,900 foreign visitors) in 2017. I understand that Hiroshima gains more attention because it was the first place that the atomic bomb was dropped on people. Nonetheless, it shouldn’t deprive Nagasaki of the opportunity to convey their message and understanding of the atomic bombings. So, I want to say, take a train from Hiroshima to Nagasaki with me! I’ve decided to visit Nagasaki this summer, as have been tempted to do since I now know what the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum offers us. It’s a 4-hour train trip from Hiroshima to Nagasaki, and I promise that your trip to Nagasaki, combined with a visit to Hiroshima, will give you more perspectives on the history and round out your understanding of the atomic bombings.

I'll feature Chapultepec Park in another blog but basically a forest in the city. Taking a walk here is like a surreal escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a mere minutes away. Featured above are two statues nestled in the park with two lovers embracing each other. How about that? Images of love captured in a beautiful permanent moment? I also learned (from google) that the green appearance of the copper, bronze, brass, and other metal used may not look the same color 5, 10, 20, or even 50 years from now as they do today. It had been a nearly universally-practiced convention that with the gradual and natural changes to a river over the course of many years, the boundary also gradually moves, but that sudden or man-made alterations would not change the location of a border. But what happens when both happen at the same time? Along one section of the United States-Mexico border, between the cities of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, both methods of altering the path of the river occurred simultaneously over many decades, eventually resulting in a confusing and diplomatic mess to determine where the border between the countries laid.  The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 that ended the Mexican-American War established much of the border between the countries at the deepest point along the Rio Grande. In the following decades, the river was surveyed as shifting south, mostly gradually but with one dramatic change after a flood in 1864. By 1873, the river had moved so far south that nearly 600 acres that had once been Mexico could arguably be inside the borders of the United States. Texans named this parcel of land "El Chamizal" and began settling there, although both countries claimed the land and lawsuits were filed in the courts of both countries. In 1899, both nations dug channels near the river's path in an effort at flood control. As this was an artificial change to the river's path, it was regarded as not moving the border, but did have the effect of placing an “island” of Mexican land inside the United States. By the early 1900s, the murky border situation became enough of a diplomatic headache that the presidents of both nations agreed to meet and attempt to come to a settlement. In 1911, a commission recommended a new border be formally established after investigating where and how each section of the river had moved over the decades, but the United States rejected the commission's findings and the dispute continued for many more years, getting worse each year as the river continued to shift and more settlers from both nations moved into disputed territory. There were more proposals aimed at resolving the dispute, including the United States offering to assume Mexican debts or buy the disputed land outright, but none of these made it very far. The Chamizal issue became a stubborn point of pride for both nations.  Finally, in 1963, President John F. Kennedy sent word to Mexico that the United States would be willing to accept the 1911 commission's findings. Unfortunately, he was assassinated before it could be formalized, but his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, followed through on the commitment. Over 400 of the disputed acres were formally recognized to belong to Mexico and nearly 200 acres were recognized to belong to the United States. Both nations agreed to split the costs of creating a concrete channel for the river through the disputed area to prevent it from shifting any further. Nearly 5,600 Americans were required to move when the land they lived on was determined to be Mexican territory (they were compensated for their lost property). In 1967, the presidents of the U.S. and Mexico met at the disputed border and shook hands in a ceremony celebrating the diplomatic resolution to the dispute. (He remembers the feverish cold in the mountains when he fell. He remembers Steve kissing him for the first time in a dark alley on their way back from seeing “It happened one night”. He remembers knives and blood and dying bodies under his hands. He remembers his mother’s loving fingers over his scraped knees.)

He doesn’t sleep for two nights after the river.

On the third day, he ventures into the Smithsonian to make sure his mind is not playing tricks on him and hoping against hope it’s all some weird mirage. That he is not Bucky Barnes, that he is not the Winter Soldier. That he is just a random man with a concussion who has somebody desperately looking for him (“Steve is looking for you, he will be looking for you until the end of the line. You know because you’ll do the same”, a voice he tries to silence insists on screaming inside his head.)

And he is sure he’s not that random man as soon as he lays an eye on the first picture of the exhibition, the same way he knows most of the printed texts have mistakes (“He,… I , was born in 1917,” he thinks. “Steve was the one from ‘18. And I would have never enlisted to go to that fucking war. They made me.”)

He glares at himself in pictures and the confirmation hurts. But it hurts even more to see Steve as he remembers him from before (from the schoolyard, the hood fights, the movie nights, the hidden kisses, the slow dancing inside their home, the cold winters they fought by sharing their body heat), and from after (from a cold cell in Austria, a desperate fuck in the forest, a laughing fit in the middle of a mission, a disappearing face as he fell backwards). It hurts more because he feels the pull of his muscle memory aching to go find him.

Every part of Bucky wants to go to Steve and tell him that he is back and that he remembers; to ask for his help to figure out what to do with the memories.

He doesn’t.

The nightmares, the fear of losing his will, of hurting more people (haven’t you done that enough?), the guilt,.. It all weighs too much. He waits until he is sure Steve is out of the hospital (he watches from the other side of the street), and he disappears with the only company of an empty backpack where he carefully places the Smithsonian’s brochure that has Captain America’s (Steve’s) face on it.

He hops countries for a year and he doesn’t exchange a single word with anybody for six months. His backpack gets heavier and heavier with little notebooks where he vomits all the words that he won’t say out loud, unconsciously leaving random little spaces where he feels like a drawing or sketch would complete the page. They are good memories, those little flashes between nightmares where he can see the man he was and not the ruthless asset they forced him to be.

Fourteen months after he left DC, he finds himself in Bucharest. Fourteen months and too many cargo planes and trains and cars. He is tired (never sleeps too much, because that’s where the horrible dreams find him) and the backpack keeps getting heavier and heavier.

He doesn’t plan to stay, but somehow he does: He gets a job as a night guard where he only sees the other outcasts who work previous and next shift from him, and he rents an apartment that he pays through three other guys.

The few people who talk to him call him Stefan. He was Esteban in Mexico, Istefanos in Turkey and Stefano for two days in Italy. It wasn't deliberate the first time, but he found comfort in being called by his name, in hearing it out loud, and in being allowed to play with the name on his lips from time to time.

He uses his extensive training (as a soldier and as someone he won’t think about) to always keep an eye on the news, on any clues (for Hydra, of course, but also for Steve. He knows Steve has to be looking for him, he’s not fooling himself) but there are none, radio silence. That steady silence is the reason why his notebooks move from the backpack to the apartment, why he starts exchanging a few words with the shopkeepers when he buys his food, why he goes to a shop where they sell books by the weight and why he starts reading again.

He loses himself in fiction, and the flashing moments of peace he gets from it take him by surprise and become another link to the Bucky he once was.

It’s been two years and fifty eight days since he took Steve out of the water and himself out of Hydra’s hands when he sees Steve again: his back to him and one of his notebooks between his hands. He takes a few seconds that he probably doesn’t have just to look at Steve standing there.

He’s dressed like a soldier (a Captain), but when he turns around at the feeling of Bucky’s presence, he looks just like Steve. Neither of them are breathing as much as they need, too overwhelmed with feelings, but working hard on keeping their minds fresh for drawing a strategy.

It’s been more than seventy one years since Bucky last said “Steve” to the right person and with the right intent when he lets it out into the world again, and when he does it feels so raw that he has to remind himself of why he is hiding (not safe for Steve, he is not worth risking it all, guilt) in order to back out a little, trying to gain some emotional distance hoping he can fool Steve.

(“I read about you in a museum.”)

Of course he doesn’t fool him, how could he?

The men start coming in through the windows, and he lets his instincts guide his movements until he’s jumping off the building and trying to run free.

He doesn’t stop to think how he synced his moments with Steve’s in half a second and without talking. He doesn’t stop to think how electric everything felt when he touched Steve’s shoulder.

And he doesn’t stop to think about how his ears keep buzzing minutes after Steve called him “Buck”, how he had made it sound so intimate that a lazy October afternoon in Brooklyn from a lifetime ago appeared before his eyes (entangled legs, young hearts, careless laughs, moaned “Buck ”.)

He tries to run from it all (protect, protect, protect ) but they catch them.

It’s seventy three years since he fell, four years since he took Steve out of the Potomac, a year since he went out of cryo and six hours since his mind was fully his again when Steve (bearded, sweaty, sex-haired, naked, and plastered to his side inside their warm hut in Wakanda) breaks their momentary silence.

“I have a present for you, Buck,” he says, extending his arm over Bucky while trying to reach something.

“I don’t think I have energy for another present right now.”

Bucky’s joke is way too evident but it makes them chuckle. Steve kisses him on the lips as an answer and leaves a heavy tote bag over Bucky’s naked stomach.

“Nat collected some favours and we located most of your notebooks in a vault a few months ago; she recently retrieved them and sent them here. I figured that since you finally own your mind now, it was time for you to own your memories, too.”

He’s told Steve about the notebooks a thousand times since he woke up, about how writing down the happy moments that popped into his brain helped him find himself beyond the horrors. About how he stayed awake writing them to keep the nightmares at bay.

Bucky takes Steve’s hand with his right one and places them (joined) over his heart, then he opens one of the little books with his new vibranium one and smiles.

“They are yours, too,” he says before he starts reading out loud.

We are much closer to facism than most people would think

Each early warning sign is here in present-day America.

1) Powerful and Continuing Nationalism

both presidential candidates are relying strongly on nationalism to make their case for the Oval Office. Trump’s nationalism (“Make America Great Again/Keep America Great”) is much more obvious, but Biden’s emphasis on “fighting for the soul of our nation” and the like appeals to voters who want to restore their sense of American exceptionalism lost under Trump.

2) Disdain for Human Rights

there are ICE concentration camps at the US-Mexico border where many have died from awful conditions, gone missing, or have been separated from their families. The United States has destabilized, bombed, and invaded dozens of countries in the Middle East and the global south in the name of corporate profit. Millions are homeless and without healthcare in the richest country on the planet, and recently President Trump has proposed numerous transphobic pieces of legislation

3) Identification of Enemies as a Unifying Cause

the Cold War and the War on Terror are the most prominent examples of this “common enemy” tactic used to rally public opinion. In recent weeks, Trump and the GOP have used Antifa, which isn’t even a real organization, as a scapegoat for the protests and riot, despite leaked FBI documents showing there was zero evidence found of Antifa involvement in the George Floyd protests. The Democrats have also used the “common enemy” tactic, most often with Trump himself. The corporate owned DNC was able to justify nominating a centrist candidate whose policy measures do nothing to address the poverty and systematic poverty the majority of American people face

4) Supremacy of the Military

one of [leftnortheast’s] recent posts goes into detail about how much we spend on our military. Not only is it vast amounts of funding completely contrary to what Americans need, out military is used primarily by our politicians to install and maintain corporate-friendly governments in third world countries

5) Rampant Sexism

Donald Trump has dozens of rape allegations and was caught on tape saying he grabs women “by the pussy” to get them to sleep with him. Joe Biden has a number of allegations of inappropriate behavior himself, as well as an extremely credible rape accusation from Tara Reade

6) Controlled Mass Media

90% of American media is owned by five corporations. As [leftnortheast] talked about in [their] recent #MediaMonday post, these corporations are beginning to censor smaller, dissenting political voices

7) Obsession with National Security

after 9/11, the government passed the Patriot Act, and now out government (through the NSA, FBI, etc.) now have completely stripped Americans of their privacy by monitoring phone calls, messages, emails, etc. In fact, immediately following the first wave of George Floyd protests, an overwhelming bipartisan majority voted to give Trump increased survelliance powers, something that’s been done before. There were also credible reports of spy planes monitoring peaceful protests.

8) Religion and Government Intertwined

Trump’s bible photo-op was probably the most egregious example of this, but it’s not hard to find this. “In God we trust” remains the United State’s official motto, and “one nation, under God” remains in our Pledge of Allegiance. “God Bless America” is another one of Trump’s favorites.

9) Corporate Power Protected, Labor Power Suppressed

[leftnortheast] combined these two, as they are both untrusting to a capitalist economy— the two classes have conflicting interests and need to stymie the other’s in order to succeed. Corporate power is protected by the state, because the capitalist class uses lovbying, corporate media, and campaign donations to ensure politicians serve their interests and not those of the people, the working class.

10) Disdain for the Intellectuals and the Arts

Public schools and colleges across the country have cut arts and humanities programs at an alarming rate

11) Obsession with Crime and Punishment

Despite only making up 4% of the global population, the United States accounts for 20% of the world prison population. The US has the most people in prison per capita of any country on a Earth.

12) Rampant Cronyism and Corruption

For 2018, the median net worth of members of Congress was $511,000. The richest Congressional members are worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

13) Fraudulent Elections

There is more than enough evidence to conclude the Democratic Party rigged the 2016 presidential primary in favor of Hillary Clinton. Documents have been released revealing the DNC was working jointly with Hillary Clinton while the primary was still happening, and emails brought to the public show how the DNC would work with the media to manufacture smear campaigns against Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. Mass voter suppression is prevalent throughout this country.

After the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed, voter suppression, which targets BIPOC and low income communities especially, was declining. By 2012 for example, 90.2% of eligible Black voters in Mississippi were registered to vote, compared to less than 10% prior to it’s passage. However, in 2013, the Supreme Court ruled that the Voting Rights Act was unconstitutional. Since then, thousands of polling places have been closed around the country, many of them in predominantly Black neighborhoods, and other obstacles target transgender, low income, BIPOC, and/or young voters like voter ID laws have become increasingly popular.

For example, in 2016, a voter ID law in Wisconsin had blocked around 27% of the systems Black population from voting, which the Republican Attourney General would later brag had helped Donald Trump win Wisconsin

Final Slide: If the working class is not aware that it is the flaws of capitalism and the actions of the bourgeoisie that has forced them into a poor material state, they will often misdirect their hatred, which is why a lot of fascist states scapegoated specific groups of people.

This was evident in many of the 20th century fascist states in Europe.

In times of economic strife, the bourgeoise are more likely to endorse a fascist revolution, because it will quell the working class and allow them to maintain their assets and power.
