The gates of Brookfield Zoo are closed to the public to help keep coronavirus from spreading, but life continues at the west suburban animal facility.
Thursday, the zoo had the happy occasion of announcing the arrival of two African lion brothers, 4-year-old, Brutus and Titus, via Facebook Live stream. Our photographer Brian Cassella was there in person to take pictures of the imports from a Utah zoo.
“We brought these animals in during this quiet time because it was ideal for introducing them to their new environment,” said Bill Zeigler, senior vice president of animal programs, during the zoo’s daily 11 a.m. livestream.
The lions were moved to Brookfield following the mysterious death, in mid-January, of the zoo’s female Isis, following a mysterious fall into her moat. Two weeks earlier Brookfield medical staff euthanized her long-time male partner Zenda after age-related degeneration left him able to stand or walk only with great difficulty.

Rating Methodology
Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

In 2008, Ryan Marr felt invincible.
At 21, as a co-op student from Wilfrid Laurier University, he was handling millions of dollars in investments for Gluskin Sheff and Associates, a Toronto-based firm that had close to $4 billion in assets at the time.
For months, he felt he could do no wrong. His stock picks — a mix of REITs, Canadian and U.S. banks and tech companies such as Miranda Technologies and Evertz Technologies Ltd. — were all making significant gains. Investing was easy, he thought, and he could make a career of it.

When global markets were struck down by the financial crisis that year, Marr remembers standing in front of a computer screen that displayed the market’s real-time impact on the firm’s investments and seeing that they had lost more than $240 million in one day. That number only grew as the crisis deepened.
“I think I was so naive to the implications of losing that much money so quickly that I was more fascinated with the magnitude of the losses,” Marr, now 32, said from a conference room in his downtown Toronto office, which sits directly above a toy store.
“You could be the best stock picker in the world, but when markets fall, you’re going to lose money and there needs to be a portfolio management decision that helps protect against those losses,” he added.
Marr was still getting acquainted to Bay Street when he saw his first investments tumble in the most brutal market crash since the Great Depression. Now a seasoned investor, the experience appears to have moulded his market strategies.
Last year, Marr’s new firm, Waypoint Investment Partners, earned its clients a 6.2 per cent return in segregated accounts. By comparison, the S&P/TSX Composite Index lost close to 12 per cent. Most of those losses came in a brutal final quarter, but in that time, Waypoint’s defensive portfolios managed to remain around even.
The firm is now looking to raise $500 million for a new hedge fund — the All-Weather Portfolio —  devoted to Marr’s strategy, which attempts to insulate investors from massive downturns like the one he watched in awe as a co-op student.
Marr’s approach is two-pronged. He invests in high-dividend yielding Canadian-listed stocks that are outside the resource sector and deploy conservative balance sheets. Mainstream investors likely wouldn’t recognize most of his picks, Marr admitted, because analysts don’t cover them. There are only 110 stocks that fit his profile. Of these, he chooses to only focus on between 20 and 25 companies, rotating two or three out from the larger pool each year.
Marr then uses the dividends from these investments to buy put options, usually ranging between two to six months on Canadian-listed securities both inside and outside his portfolio and on indexes such as the S&P/TSX60. Marr also writes some calls, but most of his emphasis is on downside protection.
The specific purchase decision is mostly based on pricing, he said, but he deploys a variety of puts ranging from at-the-money options to those with a strike price ten per cent below the current price. If the puts expire, he re-evaluates.
Should the market undergo a correction like it did at the end of 2018, the returns are safe, he said, because losses in the portfolio’s equities are offset by the returns from the puts. The strategy appears to be more well-suited for a market that is at the end of its natural cycle because when stocks are rising in a raging bull market, Marr is still buying put options.
If another investor with a basic equities strategy makes 10 per cent on their portfolio during this time, Marr would only make seven due to about three per cent of the returns going back to buying put options. The conversations Marr has with investors aren’t always the easiest. Not many are ready to give up a chunk of their returns for downside protection — until they see their investments plummet, that is.
“If the market were going up 10 per cent, they find it hard to understand, but when the markets go down 10 per cent, they all understand,” he said.
All it took for Marr to understand the same logic was one of the greatest market collapses in history.
Marr got his first job out of high school at Calloway Real Estate Investment Trust, now known as Smart Centres Real Estate Investment Trust, through a family connection. Working to pay his way through university, Marr was a summer intern but they let him make calls to put up collateral to receive funding for new projects. “I couldn’t believe how easy it was,” he said.
Securing $300 million was as simple as getting Merrill Lynch on the phone and sending over a list of properties that he believed were enough to collect that amount. “Next thing I knew, I was getting $300 million. I literally knew nothing,” he said.
During his next stop at Gluskin Sheff, where he’d stay for more than 10 years, Marr’s specialty quickly became investing in options. Working in long-short hedge funds, Marr began looking for an approach that didn’t involve shorting stocks in a low-interest-rates environment that made it difficult to reinvest the cash proceeds at high rates of return.
Options looked appealing because no one at Gluskin Sheff had really waded into that pool yet — firms were content to allow TD and BMO to dominate that market.
But the prices for buying put options were steadily declining and the feasibility of using them to hedge a portfolio grew more and more interesting. What Marr later learned was that others had developed the same idea as a way to look for additional yield that traditional fixed income portfolios weren’t providing. A “one-way trade” as he called it resulted in pushing the price of volatility down and making its appeal stretch market-wide.
While he paired his new options expertise with his fondness for high-dividend yielding stocks and began implementing the strategy for his personal investments, he never put it into practice at Gluskin Sheff. The reason, he said, is because the small-cap names he invests in “don’t necessarily have the scale to move the needle for a $9 billion asset management firm.” He didn’t even pitch the idea.
Marr preferred to leave the firm instead and see if he could make the strategy work on his own.
Perhaps his harshest criticism of the investment sector is one that’s constantly heard in Canada’s medical field: There are too many walk-in clinics and not enough family physicians or specialty clinics. Moving away from Gluskin Sheff would be akin to working in his own specialty clinic.
It didn’t take long for him to be recruited at Waypoint, which was then a multi-family office being run by another former Gluskin Sheff alum, the firm’s former chief investment officer, Bill Webb. Webb left Gluskin Sheff two years before Marr did, but the two stayed in touch, and in multiple phone calls, Marr would plant the seeds in Webb’s mind about a new strategy that combined volatility with high-dividend stocks.
Marr joined Waypoint in late 2017 as a partner and portfolio manager and immediately began to implement his strategies. The first results were positive, he said, and it didn’t take long for the firm to begin drawing attention from outside the partners’ family members. The creation of a fund was the next step in the evolution.
Most of Waypoint’s investors are in an older demographic and are saving for retirement. The strategy works for these people, he said, because it allows them to compound returns while avoiding tremendous losses. The investor he cannot help is one that has a significant amount of capital in play and is searching for growth in a “Hail Mary” investment, he said.
And yet Marr’s portfolio scored two victories last year that any investor would envy.
Pure Industrial REIT was Marr’s play on Amazon.com Inc’s good fortunes. While the tech giant would have been an albatross in Marr’s portfolio, he still wanted exposure to the online retail scene. Thinking that the logical play was to invest in the warehouse space that companies such as Amazon would require, Marr’s faith in Pure Industrial was rewarded when it was bought in January for $3.8 billion by Blackstone Group LP, a New York investment firm. His second big win came when Brookfield Infrastructure acquired Enercare, an Ontario-based company that rented water heaters to home owners, in an October deal for $4.3 billion.
Each of those gains ended up contributing 2.5 per cent to his portfolio, he said.
As he prepares to begin investing in the All-Weather Portfolio this month, the newest stock atop Marr’s list is Sienna Senior Living Inc., a company that owns and operates nursing homes across Ontario. The stock lost 15 per cent between January and December 2018 but its 5.28 per cent dividend lessened the blow.
Based on its past performance, Marr also knows what he’s likely to get out of this investment considering the stock has not hovered above or below the $14-$19 range in four years. The future, however, appears to be brighter. The stock is his way of betting on waves of baby boomers retiring and heading into retirement homes and long-term care facilities. Here’s the basic rundown of Interships:
Length of stay: 2-3 months – preference given to those available for three months.
Who Can Apply: Anyone can apply, however accepted applicants are typically current undergraduate students in any degree, or those who have completed their Bachelor’s degrees in the past 24 months.
Accepting Applications: Year round.
Program Details: Interns have an opportunity to gain experience in fields related to captive animal management and wildlife biology, while supporting the daily operations of a non-profit organization. You will gain experience in the following areas:
Behavioral Training- practical skills and application of positive reinforcement, clicker training, mark and capture.
Animal Husbandry- feeding, medicating, health observation, maintenance of enclosures, and environmental enrichment.
Safe Handling Practices- Ethology and identifying behavioral cues.
Teamwork and Independence- Interns will have a variety of tasks over the course of their stay that may require them to work as a team as well as other tasks that will require them to work independently.
Interpersonal Skills- Interns will gain experience within their duties to learn skills such as prioritizing, decision making, multitasking, as well as learning your limits and pushing beyond them.
Non-profit Business Management- includes areas in marketing, grant writing, fundraising, networking, outreach, and membership coordination.
Public Relations- Interns will interact and work with the public by working customer service in our gift shop, giving tours, and answering visitor questions.
Research Experience- Interns may have the opportunity to observe research that is currently being conducted by visiting researchers, with the direct permission of each researcher. During the months of January and February interns will participate in our in house observational research. Interns are trained and prepared to conduct our breeding season watch behavioral research.
Daily Operations of a Non Profit- Interns will be asked to assist in the following areas: office/clerical, maintenance of grounds, manual labor, retail and admissions.
Typical activities include:
Observing Veterinary Care- this may include surgeries, vaccinations, daily hospice care to our older animals.
Assisting with Large Scale Projects- this may include building of new enclosures and fences.
Grounds and Maintenance Work- Interns help us do everything that keeps the park up and running, including cleaning out animal enclosures, cutting grass and shoveling snow. It may not always be glamorous, but we wouldn’t be open without these things!
Attending Educational Lectures- weekly educational sessions are given by staff members on topics such as: animal husbandry, nonprofit management, classical and operant conditioning, training techniques, updates on wild wolf populations and state management. Interns may have the opportunity to sit in on portions of our seminars.
Visiting Other Facilities- past trips include: Indianapolis Zoo, Brookfield Zoo, Exotic Feline Rescue Center, and Columbian Park Zoo.
Make Friends for Life- experience other cultures from around the world, as some of our Interns and Externs are from other countries such as: Germany, Japan, Australia, Norway, Ireland, etc.
Meeting Wolves and Foxes- all of our animals with the exception of the Bison are hand raised and socialized to humans from a very young age. This allows us to work with our animals throughout their life time as well as give a once in a lifetime experience for those that participate in our programs. All Interns get limited opportunities to meet our animals in person.
Create your own fundraiser- Interns in the past have assisted with our yearly events by creating small fundraising activities in conjunction to our themed parties. For example, this has included selling pumpkin pie made from the pumpkins from our annual Pumpkin Party. Interns help with all of our fundraisers, including the Walk For Wolves.
Seasonal Activities- during the time pups are here at Wolf Park, interns can assist in the socialization process of the pups. Interns participate in observational research during the breeding season. Interns can also shadow the park’s veterinarian.
Butchering- At Wolf Park we feed our wolves predominantly road kill deer. In order to keep our wolves healthy and happy, all interns are trained and are required to properly prepare food for the wolves. This involves learning how to butcher the carcasses and dispense the food in accordance to our feeding protocols.
Costs: $495 for the entire program. A $200 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of acceptance to hold your space, with the balance due in full one month before your arrival. Housing is included. Food, transportation to and from our facility, groceries, souvenirs, visas and other expenses are not included in the program price.

A group of private-equity firms reached a deal to acquire Medline Industries Inc. that would value the medical-supply company at more than $30 billion, in one of the largest leveraged buyouts since the financial crisis.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier Saturday that the group was close to a deal after beating out a rival bid from the private-equity arm of the Canadian investing firm Brookfield Asset Management Inc. BAM 0.12%

Based in Northfield, Ill., family-owned Medline is a little-known but major player in the field of medical equipment. It manufactures and distributes equipment and supplies used in hospitals, surgery centers, acute care and other medical facilities in more than 125 countries.
Medline’s vast array of products include surgical gowns, examination gloves and diagnostic equipment, as well as consumer-facing brands such as Curad bandages. It has some $17.5 billion in annual sales, according to the company’s website.
The brothers James and Jon Mills founded the company in 1966, taking it public in 1972. The brothers bought back the shares five years later. James’s son Charlie has been Medline’s CEO since 1997.
The family would remain the single largest shareholder in the company after the buyout, and the management team would remain in place, the company said Saturday.
The sale of Medline would be the latest sign that private-equity firms have regained their taste for big buyouts. They all but disappeared after a number of them performed poorly or filed for bankruptcy in the wake of the 2008-09 financial crisis, weighed down by mountains of debt. Firms are now sitting on more than $1.6 trillion of unspent cash, according to data provider Preqin—and that doesn’t take into account the billions that big institutional investors are clamoring to invest directly in deals.
The fact that three private-equity firms came together—they are equal partners, some of the people said—harks back to an earlier era before the crisis, when so-called club deals were common. They fell out of favor as firms have generally preferred to partner with their biggest investors, but have started to appear more lately, and this deal was too large to do without partners.
In a sign of how hungry the firms were for the deal, senior executives from the bidders made pilgrimages to Medline’s suburban-Chicago headquarters to woo members of the family.
The Wall Street Journal reported in April that Medline was exploring a sale, likely to private equity, and had hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. GS 0.70% to run the process. The winning consortium beat out a field of bidders that over the course of the auction included a who’s who of the biggest buyout firms.
BDT & Co. also acted as financial adviser to Medline, and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz was legal adviser. BofA Securities Inc., J.P. Morgan, Barclays, Morgan Stanley and Centerview Partners advised Blackstone, Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP was the group’s legal adviser.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, most of our poll workers have been replaced by City staff and volunteers at their request. Therefore to provide better management due to the number of inexperienced workers and insufficient numbers, all polling locations will consolidate at the Brookfield Conference Center – located just south of Brookfield Square Mall at 325 South Moorland Road. The Brookfield Conference Center will be the only voting location in the City of Brookfield on Election Day, April 7th. Your usual polling location will NOT be open. Safe distancing protocols (6 feet social distancing) will be in force both for voting in-person absentee (early voting) at City Hall and for voting at the Brookfield Conference Center on Election Day, April 7, 2020. On Election day, each voter will be given a new pen to use during voting and then to keep when they leave the voting area. The Brookfield Conference Center has restroom facilities for hand washing after voting. · Prior experience implementing best practices in field sales team management techniques.
· Professional experience as relationship builder with strong ability to quickly build rapport and bring people together. Assertive (versus aggressive), warm personality.
