hey there! i just binged the main fic series, and i very much enjoyed it, but i have a question. what entities or aspects whatever theyre called is everyone associated with? i get the impression that maybe youll make your own names for them in the fic? maybe not but. i dont know much about tma and the entities besides like the Lonely and the Slaughter like in name alone, so i thought id come here and ask!

first of all, if you haven't yet, i would recommend reading everything tag, the third part of what's the time mr. wolf, for a more comprehensive explanation of how i'm approaching the idea of the entities in the fic!

technically you can sort everyone by the canon system, but that system doesn't exist in-universe. in tma canon the entities were defined by smirke some 200 years before the story present, but in fta they're being developed by tango in the present day, and he's approaching it from a different angle, prioritizing exploration and experimentation over containment. so his system is different, and very much a work in progress!

i tend to read the entities as a whole as much more fluid than they're sometimes portrayed- i think of them as a massive spectrum of 'everything people are scared of', which means you can try to break it down into taxonomies forever but never arrive at one 'correct' classification.

for example, cleo's deal in fta can be read as the flesh or the stranger or even the buried depending on which aspect of it you focus on. under the current draft of tango's system, she's classed under 'art,' which is a lot to do with fears related to creative pursuits, dehumanization, cgi/uncanny valley stuff, transformation- incorporating a large part of what is in canon the stranger, but also spiral, flesh, and even corruption elements. the events of the red king's tragedy also probably most accurately fall under art, even though in the canon system they would probably be somewhere between spiral and slaughter. and so does beef's deal from deckbuilding basics, which is sort of flesh-aligned but maybe closest to the lonely using the canon system.

that's so much answer for your straightforward question which i did not actually answer, but my cowriter and i have thought a LOT about the topic. so much of from the archives is about me exploring the implications of the entities system and what might happen if you rebooted it in a different setting!
