Hey could you write a Finnick odair / reader where snow forces them to pretend to date like he did with katniss and peeta? The whole convince him and get married as a distraction thing? Thanks :)
the pretender
finnick odair x reader
synopsis: being reaped from the victor’s pool changed your life in more ways than you imagined
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
you were his favorite girl.
girl. you were a girl when you had been reaped, a girl when your feet stepped off the platform, more shocked that you didn’t immediately blow up into bits. a girl when you had committed your first kill. you remembered the sound of your knife slicing into human flesh for the first time. the ringing in your ears had become permanent after you had been too close to the explosion that had killed half of the tributes. an explosion that you had accidentally caused.
your rebellious spirit was fun at first, for the capital to laugh and delight in, until you stopped using the scripts that they had written for you, and tried to destroy the idea of the girl in their minds.
snow subdued you, tried to barter your family’s life with cooperation. unbeknownst to him, you hadn’t seen your family in years since they had abandoned you, for fighting against your father’s abuse.
“kill them. do whatever you want to them. just leave me alone.” your own words haunted you since the day snow had presented evidence of their murders. you didn’t dare flinch in his presence, holding a strong facade that you didn’t care, that they were beneath you.
as he left, irritated at your refusal to comply, letting ideas stir in his head with what to do with you, you broke down. tears shed as you realized that they were gone because of you, because you couldn’t let your anger go.
but snow liked you, he must’ve had a reason to keep you around for so long, and until just a few days ago, you hadn’t known why.
you breathed deeply as you heard your name called. it was deja vu, and suddenly you were back to the thirteen year old girl, who was so emaciated and starved that when her name was called, she believed she was hallucinating.
you looked crudely into the screen, not offering any smiles or sign of pride that you had been reaped, all over again.
“y/n l/n.” hearing your full name made you turn around immediately. you were slightly blinded by his blonde hair and pearly white smile.
“finnick odair.” you realized who the man was, quicker than you’d admit. the last time you had seen him was at a ridiculous capital party that snow had forced you to attend. finnick had been leaned against a wall, with two capital sluts hanging onto his shoulders, whispering in his ears simultaneously.
he smiled, not surprised that you didn’t say anything else besides his name. you had that tendency about you, to shoot down any attempt at conversation. even going as far to avoid it all together. “i’m glad you haven’t tried to run away, not after i had caught you eyes and you dashed off at that party. how long ago was that? three,” his speech hung onto the words, “four?”
“five months. it’s been five months, finnick.” you remembered his gaze, and remembered how your feet made you run at the sight. you had heard stories about finnick, and you weren’t exactly planning on ever talking to him.
“that’s right.” he smiled, “i hope you’ve been well since then. it was nice seeing you in something other than a bloody shirt.” his gaze suddenly seemed very far away, as if he was remembering exactly what you wore that night.
you shrugged, deciding to change topics, “everyone else is polishing their weapons,” you heard a guttural war cry, and saw another tribute lunge at a partner, “and methods.” finnick turned to the source of the cry and laughed slightly, “oh yeah? what’s your choice of weapon, again?”
“knives. anything long and sharp.” you always had an affinity for knives. it was second nature to you, an art of your district. your mind drifted away slightly to the array of knives that you had collected during your games. every tribute that you had slaughtered had a knife, and you collected them as a token. by the end, you had 23 knives, all representing a kill.
it had been upsetting when you went on your victory tour, to see the look on their family’s faces, but you had blurred out their emotions, and at the height of your submission to snow, had given out the same apathetic speech to every district.
finnick watched as your mind drifted back to reality. wherever you had gone for the better half of a minute, was a place finnick spent every waking moment, running away from.
he grabbed your shoulder, squeezing it slightly as he looked into your eyes, whispering your name, “hey, hey.” you focused on his eyes, gaze shifting to his mouth as they shaped the syllables of your name. you swallowed thickly, “im sorry-i…” you pulled away, his hand falling free of your shoulder. finnick watched as you exited the training room, your hands balled up into fists as you disappeared through the doorway.
“absolutely not.” you had spent your childhood under the thumb of one man, and you had barely made it out from under snow’s. this was only another way to get you under it once more.
finnick had his head bowed, having listened to snow’s pitch to make the two of you a couple. he needed something to distract the capital citizens from peeta and katniss, who everyone knew, was just a thorn in snow’s side.
“my dear, i really don’t think you have a choice in the matter.” snow’s eyes narrowed at you and you sighed, “what else is there left for you to do? im already being marched to my death, again, just speed the process up. poison me like you do the rest.” you took a good jab at one of the many secrets you had obtained, living in his cage.
snow laughed, “i would’ve done that a long time ago, y/n.”
just as you were beginning to argue again, finnick looked up, eyes catching yours. he held your gaze for a minute, blinking his wet eyes at you. there was something that was telling you that this wasn’t just about you.
finnick.
oh how could you forget finnick.
there was something clearly at stake for him too, otherwise why had he remained silent this entire time?
compliance was something he had to get used to, also under snow’s control.
“okay, fine.” you felt yourself swallow bile, “i’ll do it.” you looked at finnick, your future husband, and the reason why you were even agreeing.
“why did you do it?” his voice cracked, a raw noise as he looked over at you. you had been silent the whole time since leaving the meeting with snow. you shuddered with the strong winds, having been sat out on the stoop of the building, housing all the reaped former victors.
you looked at finnick, having caught his gaze, holding it for a moment, “my entire life i’ve been selfish, and i guess i realized that it isn’t always about putting myself first.” you knew the stories, heard the rumors. snow had barely played with the idea, making you like finnick, but you had always refused. there was nothing left for him to leverage, and so it never went anywhere.
but this, pairing the two of you was nothing short of cruel. finnick who has everything to lose, with you, who he probably didn’t expect to agree.
finnick hitched a breath, understanding what you weren’t saying. “thank you.” he breathed, “and im sorry.”
you stood up suddenly, nodding as you turned towards the entrance, “just-“ you cut yourself off, waving a hand as you continued inside.
he made the announcement. finnick had decided that with the pull he has on the capital, that he would be the one to do it. especially since he was so beloved, the attention from it was to challenge katniss and peeta’s.
you had agreed to play the part, and now you had to act like it.
there was loud cheering and applause from the crowd, and you were pushed out onto the stage, more cheers erupting as finnick stood up to meet you halfway. you kissed his cheek, grabbing his hand tightly as you two fluttered across the stage.
caesar flickerman was already standing there with a bright, capitol smile. “this is your lovely bride. we hear the honeymoon is the arena?” he looked at finnick who tipped his head back for a laugh, but didn’t answer outright.
you gave a soft laugh, “we just loved each other so much, we couldn’t wait.”
caesar looked at you, as if remembering who you were exactly, “wow.” he seemed truly amazed, perhaps even shocked.
finnick noticed the heaviness in the interview and turned his head at caesar, trying to keep the attention on the union rather than the individuals.
he grabbed your hand suddenly, clutching it tightly. as he held it for the rest of the interview, you staring at the faces in the crowd, more love struck than you, you wondered if he was trying to comfort you or himself.
“finnick.” you looked around behind you, only seeing peeta in front of you. the first few days in the arena had been a blur. you had stuck by close with finnick, who made it his mission to stay close to katniss. there was something he wasn’t telling you, but you didn’t once doubt him.
“finnick?” you whipped your head around and couldn’t find him. you were always in front of him, so he could remain in his eye line at all times. except you had failed to make sure he was in yours.
your ears started ringing as the panic set in. you scanned the trees and couldn’t find any sign of him or katniss, realizing this as peeta shared your same panicked look. your throat felt tight as you screamed his name, “finnick!” peeta suddenly took off, feet blazing towards more greenery. you had no choice but to follow, knowing finnick would’ve had you stick with peeta.
as you barely caught up to peeta, you saw him hit the floor as you ran up. whatever he had bounced off of was holding katniss and finnick back.
you looked at finnick, unable to catch his eyes as he looked up frantically. there was something you were missing, there were just bir-
“jabberjays.” peeta groaned out, “they can’t hear us, but they hear our screams.” he swallowed thickly, resting near the force field. katniss was knelt down at the edge, eyes tightly shut. you stared at finnick, at a loss for words. the panic in his face looked so real, you wondered who he was hearing.
you tore your eyes away, watching him suffer was not something you had signed up for. you felt defeated, unable to do anything as you and peeta sat like sitting ducks, waiting this torture out.
you hadn’t talked to him since the jabberjays. peeta had comforted katniss, in any way she’d let him. but they were different, you and finnick were different.
yes, you were married, he was your husband. but the issue was, you hadn’t much time to even begin to share intimate details, let alone have a good conversation. this was what snow wanted, an empty marriage to stir up all the attention.
except you knew your performance was failing. the audience could see right through you.
“hey.” finnick had snuck up on you. you had stayed a few feet away from him and the others, unsure how to handle it all. but it seems like finnick was trying to make it work. but it should be the other way around.
“finnick.” you breathed a sigh of relief unintentionally, hoping he didn’t catch on, you watched as he sat down on the sand beside you. he grabbed your hand, and for a moment you thought it to be genuine, until he raised an eyebrow.
right.
“i’m so sorry.” your voice hitched, and finnick steadied his gaze, “seeing you like that-“ you faked a choked sob, “i just couldn’t do it. i couldn’t look at you and see-“ you cut yourself off, throwing your head in your hands.
snow had to be happy that you were selling yourself off to protect finnick. but beside that heart to heart you had with him in the beginning, you had nothing else to go off of.
“i heard you.” finnick’s voice cracked, “you were screaming, these terrible, horrible screams.” he shook his head, as if he were hearing them all over again, making you realize that he was telling the truth. “and it wouldn’t stop.” he breathed. his breathing got harder and you found yourself kissing him to make him stop. finnick panted into the kiss, as if you had grounded him. you pulled back, catching his eye as you looked away.
your hand that he had been holding gripped his harder. you looked out into the water, watching as it’s dangerous waters moved, unsure on how you would survive this.
with or without him.

my sweet anon ask and ye shall receive
Konig x Reader Hunger Games AU
⚠️ THE TRIBUTES SPOILERS BELOW ⚠️
When Konig’s name was called he truly thought he was dreaming - not in like, a good way, but in, ‘this is truly so unbelievable it can’t possibly be real’ kind of way. Because what are the odds? It’s his worst nightmare that stars the girl he revolves around. It was the most bittersweet thing that has ever happened to him - as if the stars aligned during armageddon.
Shaking your hand was so conflicting. Your tiny hand, so soft in his calloused, overworked hands. It was absolutely electrifying to touch you for the first time, a jolt of warmth that started at his finger tips and bloomed throughout his body. It was immediately followed by a crashing wave of nausea thinking about those very same hands being forced to compete in a fight to the death.
When Reader made Konig ‘deal with her outer thigh,’ homie was SWEATING. I mean he somehow had absolutely no thoughts and a million at the same time. Dial-up motem up noises up there. He didn’t dare move against her in fear she would shift away. (He absolutely popped a chub and felt so guilty about it lmaoo)
Sooo disappointed when it didn’t happen again :/
I don’t think (?) I ended up including this in the final draft but Konig’s stylist’s name is Ithica and she adores Konig just as much as Ruby does, albeit in a more superficial way.
He was so flustered seeing Reader in the wheat dress and all dolled up for the first time, his heart stopped.
When Reader insisted Konig hold her hand on the chariot he got the exact same feeling he did when he shook her hand, when he was pressed to her thigh. A buzz under his skin and a flush on his cheeks. Sparks on contact that spread throughout his entire body. He was much less worried about the ceremony with Reader’s hand in his. It’s all he could focus on.
When Reader ripped her hand away he was sure he ruined everything. I mean, full spiral. He was sure it was his fault, that he misunderstood the gesture, that he forced himself on you. He felt perverted, filthy, as if he had just rubbed his dirty hands from a long day on the field all over a priceless work of art.
Konig got just as swarmed with hormones during the first aid training 😭
Konig has been actually benefiting from this world where his size is suddenly something to be adored for. He’s never been so self-assured in that sense - his interview, his score, every Citizen and every member of his team gushing over him. The fact that his size is such a huge, desirable advantage is such a stark contrast from what he’s used to. Aside from the whole ‘being sent to his death thing,’ the only thing making him nervous and negatively self aware is simply standing in Reader’s presence.
Bonding with Ruby has also been incredibly meaningful to him. He can’t help but see her as a mother figure, and she seems to accept and love just about everything about him.
Konig was so excited for Reader to see him in his lil interview suit. 😭
Konig spent so much time in his room, laying on his back, fingers threaded over his waist, staring up at the ceiling just thinking about every moment he shared with Reader that day.
+ fun fact, I almost included Simon Riley in this story. It was a toss up between Reader’s ‘Gale’ and Titan’s character. I kind of enjoyed playing with the original characters in this story though and I decided not to do the whole Gale thing. <3 don’t mind me
This is going to be incredibly controversial. But the reason y’all like this interpretation of Konig so much is because I swirled my interpretation of Konig with Peeta Mallark. Just sprinkled some Peeta in there. Love you Suzanne <3

not to be weird on main, but since peeta mellark has successfully made me think of him every time i see a good loaf of bread, i'd need him to get the fuck over here and teach me how to bake and knead the dough so we can eat warm baked goods together on the footsteps of his front door while he talks about the different kinds of bread from each district, his passion for art, his obsession with sunset and everything and everything else. you know, for compensation or whatever.
#i cried about the ending of mockingjay again today so that means another crack thg post !!#<3#peeta mellark#but seriously i did think of him when i picked up a loaf of wheat bread i'm dead serious lmao#everlark#peeta mellark x reader#the hunger games#thg#catching fire#mockingjay#nadirants

My thoughts on The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie
I don’t know if I liked it as much as the original films (maybe Mockingjay 1 & 2 as they are pretty emotionally draining), but I still enjoyed it.
I think where it fell a little flat for me is 1. The beginning was a bit slow (tbh I only really started getting interested when Lucy Gray stuck that snake down that girl’s dress & even then I enjoyed the story more when the setting changed from the Capitol to the district) 2. I knew Snow would survive 3. I’d already been spoiled online for a lot of stuff that happens & 4. while I know the director did his best to make Snow as “likeable” as he could for as long as possible, even before he started getting “a little too comfortable” with killing & snitching I didn’t find him as sympathetic as Katniss or Peeta (but that is probably again down to the fact that I know what he goes onto do & there’s no real way around that), this made engaging with him difficult for me.
The world is fascinating. Getting to see all the new locations we never had access to before as well as old locations now in a totally different light (for example district 12 which, while still clearly suffering, seemed like such a bustling industrial town compared to how it is in Katniss’s time). It might have a much more retro aesthetic but there's also just a more vibrant, natural, wild & lawless atmosphere to this movie compared to the others in the franchise. The whole scope of the film just felt more cinematic then I remember the others being yet also weirdly intimate. Maybe because it was one contained story & we knew the main character’s fate from the start. I also loved the title cards signifying the start of each section of the story like from the books & wished they'd done something similar for the other films. It just added a certain flair to the whole thing. Almost gave it the vibe of a tragic play.
The costuming was great. The bright red of the academy uniforms. Flickerman’s snazzy suits. Snow’s dapper black & white outfit. Both peace keeper uniforms (despite one of them giving very ‘1930’s Germany’ vibes) looked great. Grandma might have been a bigot, but at least she was well dressed. Everything Dr Gaul wore (except the top that looked like a used tampon, lol) was exquisite. The main ladies of fashion, Tigris & Lucy Gray slayed. Our Future Capitol stylist looked like some regal yet exotic bird & Miss Survivor was giving Bohemian, country girl realness the entire time she was on screen. Even the extras were serving (like that random couple Snow walked past on his way to the reaping ceremony).
The music was amazing. Every song that played was fantastic (shout out to Olivia for her end credit contribution). The lyrics & instrumentation were beautiful & my god does Rachel Zegler have pipes! Anyone who says the singing scenes are cringy is just stupid like I’m sorry you can’t appreciate art. Also, the words ‘ballad’ & ‘songbirds’ are literally in the title. Plus, Lucy Gray is from the poorest district, so what exactly do those people want her to do in her free time? She can’t exactly hop on an X-box for a few hours. Not too mention that (as the offspring of someone who’s musically inclined) I can tell you, it’s completely realistic for a musician to use their craft to help them deal with trauma & Lucy Gray clearly had more than her fair share of that.
The Grandma'am helped to paint a sadly very realistic background for Snow. As who among us hasn’t met at least one delusional old person who thinks that their/their group’s suffering (regardless of the severity of it or the reason behind their former/newer status in society) means that no one else are deserving of even the tiniest shred of humanity & there are some people who are unlucky enough to not only be related to these people but be raised by them.
Hunter schafer as Tigris is clearly the superior Snow when it comes to things like empathy & overall mental stability but I do kind of wish they’d been more for her to do. Credit where credit is due though her & Tom did actually look like they could be related & I did buy their familial bond (which makes her appearance in Mockingjay so much sadder in hindsight).
Peter Dinklage as Casca Highbottom was a bit of a mix for me just due to his purpose as a character & the limit of film as a form of media. Like sure the audience know that Snow’s going to become an irredeemable monster in the end but without a window into his mind it really does just seem like the Dean is just out to get him & even when we find out why it seems kind of unfair. Like sure his dad sucked but haven’t the Games shown that blaming children for violence caused by others is unjust (& like ok he hates Coriolanus & probably the grandma but Tigris hadn’t done anything to deserve living in poverty, as she can’t control who she’s related to)? Plus, it felt like he could have at least tried taking Snow under his wing at some point to try to hinder Dr Gual’s influence. Saying all of that, though, Peter Dinklage is great at playing an addict with depression & the idea that some drunken rambling could lead to such long-lasting suffering is terrifying. Also its pretty realistic that living with that kind of guilt & in such a cruel environment for that long would make most people jaded & bitter, even if they did have good intentions.
Omg we finally get a Mayor family on screen & they’re assholes! Madge would be so disappointed 😭. It was interesting to see how harsh & overall “boot licky” the mayor & his family seemed compared to decades later, which makes sense as the war wasn’t that long ago for them so the dad probably felt more incentive to align himself with the Capitol as well as not feeling very connected to the district people as 12’s decline probably didn’t fully set in until they really started running low on coal & Snow became president (oh I just know he wanted to blow that district off the map 😆). I also wouldn’t put it past Billy to come up with some sob story of how he really does love Mayfair but wicked Lucy Gray is somehow preventing them from being together. Still no excuse to try to send her to her death twice in one week, though. Definitely not a girl’s girl.
Ok, so a liar. Cheat. Drunk & someone who hits women. Is there anything good about Billy Taupe? Also, trying to get your ex back, while your current girlfriend is literally standing right next to you? Dude, have some god damn back bone! You made a choice, now stick to it. Also, fumbling Lucy Gray, for a girl like that? What’s it like having no brains or taste? Well, too bad, coz you’re stuck with her forever now, lol.
Viola Davies, the actress that you are. What else is there to say? Dr Gaul is almost comic book levels of insane. Like she is how the Right see women in STEM, on crack! I don’t know what she did to get into character, but whatever it was, it worked.
Jason Schwartzman as Lucretius Flickerman is a very interesting addition to the story despite playing such a small & seemingly insignificant role. He is strange in how unthreatening he is while also extremely blasé about the abhorrent violence he witnesses that it’s as funny as it is disturbing. Making him come across as more human yet harsher than his son, who at least pretends to care about the tributes (in a very Capitol way, obviously but still). There’s also a polish & confidence to Tucci’s performance that I think Schwartzman did a great job of avoiding copying (despite knowing what audiences were probably expecting) because not only are their characters in entirely different stages of their careers but the whole ethos of the Hunger Games is different in Snow’s youth than it is in Katniss’s. Caesar is a well established presenter & during his time, the games have always been a success (minus the year with the tundra) that the entire Capitol is invested in & seemingly in support of. On the other hand Lucretius had the unique task of not only coming into a job like this with zero experience (I mean imagine going from announcing the weather to presenting the fucking hunger games) but also there were no vibes to try to emulate let alone guidelines to follow because he truly was the first person to do this. On top of that, the "event" his presenting has been panned for years as both boring & unethical. Schwartzman brought a slightly awkward, experimental, yet try hard vibe (like a comedian who's desperate to get a laugh) that I think worked wonderfully for the character.
Tom Blyth's performance was great & he was visually perfect for a young Snow (the power of a good wig! Who knew lol). Even having the cool, analytical stare of Donald Sutherland, down pat. While his appearance was very Eminem during his peacekeeping days, his realisation in the cabin and subsequent breakdown in the woods were crazy. There was so much tension between him & Rachel in that scene that for a second, it literally felt like all the air had been sucked out of the room. I could almost hear the record scratch for both of them, & all that building paranoia finally coming to a sudden crescendo in the way that it did? Pure cinema!
Josh Rivera, as Sejanus, was honestly a mix for me. Obviously, I agree with his morals, but his way of going about it did seem a little dumb. However I do think it’s pretty realistic that a teenager, especially a rich one, would be rather naive. Also I’ve heard that he’s smarter in the book & I think at times my frustration with him is more just down to the fact that I’m seeing him from Snow’s point of view. Meaning scenes that would be portrayed as noble in any other film instead come across as almost painfully inconvenient because the focus is always on how they affect Snow rather than the actual victims of the situation. Lastly, sorry, Snowjanus shippers, I just don’t see it (especially on Snow’s end), but whatever floats your boat.
Rachel Zegler played Lucy Gray with the perfect mix of natural charm & emotional vulnerability with clear pride in her culture & a refusal to let the world around her change who she is. Yet there was also an air of mystery & a subtle resilience to her that makes her potentially surviving out in the woods for years without being detected actually believable (though I don’t buy the theory that she went on to become president Coin). Definitely the highlight of the movie for me.
PS. I'd love to know what you think of my review in the comments/tags & am open to criticism (as long as it's respectful) just remember that I'm only talking about the movie so please don't reference anything spersific to the book.

A big, big thank you to @alwayseverlark for the generous prize for the This Would Have Happened Anyway Challenge way back in December. I merely had to enjoy the fabulous fics and comment on them and boom! I won a commission for one of my stories. I am super grateful and elated for winning.
To win artwork for a story I wrote is very special. It was like my effort, time, and imagination were affirmed. I can't explain it. Seeing my Katniss, Peeta, Elrick, Annie, and Nathan from Companion come to life through art was validating on many levels. I am not a writer, far from it, so this is pure joy for me. My heart grows warm every time I look at their blended family rendered by @little-lynx. I'm so honored to have you draw my Everdeen-Mellark family 🙏🧡
Adoption is very close to my heart, so my very first long fic had to be about that. Katniss and Peeta may have gone through a lot in their young lives, but their hearts are infinite, and together they chose to share that with Elrick, Annie, and Nathan.
I hope you enjoy this artwork as much as I do. Thank you again @alwayseverlark and @little-lynx 🥰

🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
Today, I'm going to recommend @mtk4fun because their writing is tight, concise, and so enjoyable to read. I still have not made it all the way through their catalogue, but I look forward to reading what I haven't yet.
I can't resist the chance to recommend a rather niche fic that just turns me into a puddle of yearning every time I read it, partly because the sequel is unfinished and I may live 80 extra years just out of sheer will and want to see it complete. But the first installment is *chef's kiss*
The Firebird by fakelight
Ballet Everlark. BALLET EVERLARK OKAY.
🎨 ⇢ link your favourite piece of fanart and explain why you like it
It's called "I'll See You at Midnight" by Vortex Queen. So I went digging in my archives to find this piece and discovered when I clicked the link on my super old post that it's no longer on deviant art and neither is the artist???? I am DISTRAUGHT about this. So here is a link to it on my blog, but aadsfnasledkfnskjlngs.
What do I love about it? Literally everything?!?! It's not exact to the story but it's more about the symbols the artist included in their creations. The pink sky with the lightning? The way Katniss and Peeta are clinging to each other with their eyes closed like they literally cannot let go???? THE MOTHERFUCKING TRACKER JACKER ON HIS FINGER. I mean honestly. I pretty much turn into a raving, rabid loon anytime someone puts a wasp or tracker jacker symbols into a piece of artwork with Peeta but this was one of the first ones I saw do it so brilliantly and I just... if you haven't seen it before, I beg of you. Go look. Now.

What's your favorite character from all across THG trilogy & TBOSAS?
Why do you like this character?
Favorite quote or moment from them?
Please state one (or more) thing which you don't like from them.
Thank you 😊
@curiousthg
Hi! 😊 sorry it took me so long to respond 😅
I have two favorite characters in the entire thg universe and they are Peeta and Tigris.
About Peeta, the main reason I adore him is that he's kind. He is kind and likes to create and seek beauty in a world designed for cruelty, yet he is not weak or naive, he has his eyes wide open to his surroundings and survives in his own way. He is the male character that I hold dear to my heart because he has the characteristics of a villain or a dark romantic interest, but with the specific and clear intention that he does not want to become that. He fears becoming a monster and strives against becoming one, and when it is out of his control, he fights with everything he has to not let it consume him so that he can be himself again. He is dangerous in a way that few people pay attention to. His way with words and camouflage can be a frightening thing, even in the arc of his hijacking, there are moments when he makes space for himself in other people's lives, but instead of using those talents to gain power or influence over others, he uses them to comfort strangers, gain allies, be useful to others or as a desperate attempt to not disappear (oh the irony).
I started liking Tigris after I read tbosas. In the original trilogy, I didn't pay much attention to her but oh how wonderful it was to meet her in tbosas! She is a character I respect a lot, for her desire to achieve her dreams in the midst of terribly difficult times, for her hard work to keep her family afloat, and for the way love did not leave her blind. It takes a lot of courage to see the people we love for who they are and she didn't just prune the family tree, she set it on fire.
Peeta has many phrases that are gold, but my favorite is “But even if that happens, everyone will know we've gone out fighting, right?” In my opinion, it sums up his character and how he always puts everything he has into his ideals, ideas or plans. And my favorite moment is when he comforted the victor of District 6 as she died. I cry every time I see/read that scene.
There is a phrase of Tigris that is engraved in my soul “Try not to look down on people who had to choose between death and disgrace.” And the scene I love the most is from Movie!Tigris, when she tells Coriolanus that he looks just like his father. It's art. I get chills every time I watch that scene.
One thing I don't like about Peeta is his way of deflecting questions or comments that reveal something about him. On several occasions Katniss asks him very real questions, trying to find out more about him, but he shuts down and instead of sharing his real thoughts he says a flirtatious or romantic comment that distracts Katniss. The poor girl struggles to learn to communicate with him and he won't let her get to know him without making it more confusing for her. Every time he does that I sigh in impatience and scold him in my mind. 🥲
There's a reason why the headcanon about Tigris that I defend to the death is "Snow forced her to participate in the games to gain influence," and that's because I can't stand the idea of Tigris doing it willingly. It's my biggest delulu moment/thing. 🙃
Thanks for the ask! And sorry for the long reply, I couldn't control myself hehe 😅

I think @kennyomegasweave tagged me in this OTP meme like...months ago? And I just found it half-finished in my drafts and decided to actually get it done.
1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore? 20s, not my teens, but I used to be utterly obsessed with Jack/Kent from Check Please and now, IDEK what happened. I still love them, but I have old fic I saved and never read and can't bring myself to care anymore. IDK it makes me sad.
2. Which ship would you consider your first one? Hmm probably Betsy/Joe from the Betsy Tacy series or Anne/Gilbert from Anne of Green Gables? My first ships when I actually got into fandom were Sawyer/Kate and Sara/Grissom from CSI.
3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple? Magnus/Alec!!! I never thought I would write fic and then I watched season 1 of Shadowhunters and banged out (lol) 7 fics and almost 30k of porn in less than 2 months in 2016. They all have an insane number of hits (like. the highest has 54,878 hits and the lowest has 15,836 hits.........) and I still get kudos on them almost every day, it's wild.
4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over? Genuinely no idea, but the first one in my fan art tag is Katniss/Peeta from 2012 <3
5. Did you ever get into ship discourse? My first instinct whenever I see someone talk about something I don't like is to mute/block, so perhaps not actively, but I'm sure I have at some point.
6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently? LOL. Yes. I still fucking HATE Jack/Kate from Lost and always will. Also Dan/Blair from Gossip Girl. Lately...I'm such a multi-shipper but I gotta say Kate/Anthony from Bridgerton bc I've genuinely had to restrain myself from bitching about how much I hate them SO many times since s3 came out lol.
7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read? I finished a rewatch of Beyond Evil last night so I've been rereading some of my old bookmarks bc I've read almost everything that's out there 😔. Shout out to the masterpiece simple & clean by whir.
8. Currently, do you have any OTPs? So many!!! Taemin/Kai is still my #1, but also Juwon/Dongsik from Beyond Evil, PatPran from Bad Buddy (it took me several episodes to actually get into the show but once I did I cried...so much over them and how much they love each other LOL), KunTen from WayV, Louis/Lestat...I feel kinda bad that I don't have a major current f/f OTP but I'm literally checking my kpop tags multiple times a week for rule 63 fic and most of my current WIPs are rule 63 f/f so there's that. (Two KunTen including what hopefully is gonna be a long one, plus a Jigyu I started yesterday for a fest that I'm hoping I'll be able to get done - not because of the length, but because I've never written Seventeen before)
9. Is there any couple that, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together? So many??? I feel like I have to say Dean/Cas.......Lee/Kara never really got together so them for sure. Sawyer/Kate from Lost even though I 100% choose to believe they got together post-canon pre-flash-sideways. Oh my god I'm looking through my "forever bitter" tag and it's a lot of Cooper/Audrey from Twin Peaks as I expected, but I forgot about Mini/Franky from Skins. and ABSOLUTELY THEM. Everything about series 5 was terrible but that especially.
10. Is there any ship you used to dislike but now you think they are kind of interesting? IDK I feel like I don't usually change my mind like that. I wouldn't go as far as saying "kind of interesting" but I guess I don't hate Bree/Roger from Outlander AS much on the show as I did in the books lol.
11. Do you have any ship that, in the past, was considered normal but now you would be cancelled over? Hmm...Cesare/Lucrezia maybe? If not them almost definitely Norma/Dylan from Bates Motel LOL.
12. What was your favorite crack ship? I was gonna say I couldn't remember any that truly fit this definition, but then I remembered the Kent Parson/Claude Giroux series #dirtbags and that was great. Actually no my real answer is Syd/Richie from The Bear. Now *I* don't think it's a crackship but they have that vibe.
13. Who is the couple you read more fanfics of? Here's a side by side view of my most bookmarked ships vs the tags I have saved rn on my front page. Unfortunately you can only have 20 but I think it's a pretty good representation. (Other than the ENHA ship, where I legit don't know anything about them or frankly even what they look like, but that tag produces so much incredible unhinged porn that I read canon-blind.)
14. What most of your ships usually have in common? I feel like I have several different ~types, but: friends to lovers, I LOVE bicker-y couples, age gap relationships, especially when one of them is a mentor-ish figure, and power dynamics in general.
15. What do you absolutely hate in a ship? Nice Guy characters, whether they're a guy or a girl. The OG example is Xander (duh) and Chloe from Smallville but you also see it with characters like Sol on My Stand In...there's def more things I hate but that's one of most major ones for me.

Oh my GOSH I had so many...for nostalgia's sake, imma do a breakdown of each book and what it did to me. (Spoilers for each book!) Elementary School:
Harry Potter I owe all my reading intrigue to my dad reading me and my sister Harry Potter every night. When he stopped, I was so invested I learned to read it just to finish it. I didn't know one out of every five words and the style took me a while to get used to, but after that, everything came easy. I was nine, so I deluded myself into thinking I would actually get a letter by owl (I was obsessed with birds at the time, so my excitement was two-fold). I went around with a 'cloak' and fake wand, and tried to sit through the Deathly Hallows movie when it first released (my dad warned me it was Pg-13, and he was right. I left to 'use the bathroom' several times). I re-discovered it when I was in middle-high school and in fandom spaces, so I garnered a new appreciation for its complexity before all the JKR drama hit. That said, it suffers from a lot of odd authorial bias--like the houses supposedly all being equal and unity being the way to defeat Voldemort, yet the final book involves...no Hogwarts or house unity until the final massacre? Someone said the protagonists should've been one from each house--Hermione in Ravenclaw, Ron in Hufflepuff, Harry in Griffindor, and Malfoy in Slytherin. More of the world could've been explored this way too...wasted opportunity. And for such a long series, it made sense to have the character deaths clustered toward the end, but I didn't expect so many in rapid succession. Overall, a very good concept with pretty good execution (even if I disagree with some choices).
Pandora Gets... [Jealous, Vain, Angry, etc] The cover art on these had no right going so hard. That's what drew me in, but I stayed for the plot: "Pandy", the teenage demigod daughter of Prometheus (who inhierited his fire powers) brings the box to school for show and tell, and her bullies unleash the seven evils trapped inside. So Pandy and her friends must travel the world to recapture them within a years time, seeing the damage they've caused and gaining skills along the way. The gods are bitchy (accurate) and the characters have good chemistry, clear stakes, and plenty of action. Took a turn when Alcie flippin' DIED (I cried, I was in utter disbelief) and ended up getting to see the Underworld. She even got given control over her life string by the Fates, which was sick. Really good series--I might read the final books now that it's complete. For old time's sake.
The Hunger Games The genius was mostly lost on me (I had to beg my parents to let me read it because everyone else in fifth grade was) and I sobbed during Rue's death, but it aged very well. Katniss was refreshingly awkward, and even the required YV love triangle had symbolic purpose and buildup (Gale representing War, and Peeta, Peace). Rue's death gutted me, as did Cinna's, and freaking Prim's... And it has fantastic movie adaptations, too. You can tell Suzanne Collins only writes when she has a clear story in mind, not as a cash grab. The prequel movie Songbirds and Snakes is coming out soon, and I'm pumped.
Divergent Considerably less well-developed and politically/psychologically nuanced than the above. Would've been more resonant as just one novel that ended openly. Then it fell apart. They randomly added Tobias's pov into the third book because of Tris's contrived death (after the whole series' Faction premise is revealed as an experiment). I always thought their relationship was...too intense and weird? Mentor/mentee ships often weird me out bc they don't feel like equals. And Divergents are literally just chosen ones...we never find out what makes them dangerous. It can't be 'questioning the system', because everyone fights back at some point. "Do factionless kids get to choose their faction?" <- someone commented this, and I agree that this would've made a MUCH cooler protagonist than Tris. And the movies got downright incoherent by the third one.
Emily Windsnap I was entranced by the iridescent mermaid-tale, watercolor cover, and this ushered in my mermaid phase (which only intensified with H2O and Mako Mermaids). In book one, the lighthouse keeper drugging Emily's mom via daily doughnuts so she forgets her mermaid husband while he rots in jail for loving a human, and then Emily visits him, and eventually gets Poseidon to let them live together. I loved the semi-mer ideal (human on land, mermaid in the water), and the simple, imaginative world was well-described. Fond memories! Even though they shoehorned a love interest in for Emily, adventure was first and foremost.
Dork Diaries Loved the art for this one, but Nikki was always as big a brat as her bullies--just in retaliation. She complains her life sucks even when she wins thousands of dollars in art competitions, gets record deals, and has a scholarship to a private school. Weirdest book was a literal fever dream where Nikki got beaned in the head with a dodgeball so hard, she hallucinated an entire fairy tale.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid Aged better than dork diaries, for its vaguely dark humor and deadpan absurdity.
Guardians of Ga'Hoole Warrior Cats but for bird nerds--like me, so this was a hit. I had to read the books out of order and missed most of them, but in the end, the main character gets his wing ripped off and dies. But hey--we got the prettiest movie adaptation EVER! Each shot is a painting and ultra-detailed in a beautiful way (not hyper-realism for the hell of it (*cough Lion King cough* ).
Animorphs How K.A.Applegate managed to tell a cohesive, unnerving war story about shapeshifting kids, aliens, and mind-controlling slugs over hundreds of novels, I'll never know. Each book had clear, high stakes and was entertaining. Some got weird, but that's par for the course. And apparently, we get a somewhat tragic ending, which is pretty ballsy. Hoping the show goes well--second time's a charm!
Warriors Enjoyed this one a lot, even if I didn't read all of them. Basic knowledge of clan structure and the premise has served me well, as this and Harry Potter remain the most well-known fandoms out of any on this list.
Molly Moon An english orphan learns how to hypnotize people, and uses it to defeat various weird adults and get rich, alongside her best friend and pug. What's not to love? Got a bit out-of-hand with the power creep after they introduced time travel and future selves, but it was always a quirky series at heart, so I can't blame it. They were also the only books in english in the Swedish library when I lived there for a year, so...there's that.
Inkheart Are all the original premises for YA books taken? Get meta, and make reading a superpower! A book for book nerds, and I love it dearly for that. Kinda conventional medieval European fantasy world meets VERY conventional modern world, but it's not about the scale, but the magic; read beautifully and with conviction, and the people around you are replaced by the characters you're reading about. Villain gets to meet the author who made him, and the author gets to travel inside his own book and reap the consequences of what he made. Movies are good, but this premise was literally built for books, so it's no great loss. Fantastic characters, though. Very iconic. I'm surprised Tumblr hasn't discovered this series yet--it's right up their alley.
A Year without Autumn Not a series nor an obsession, just a fever-dream novel I read (same author as Emily Windsnap) where a girl is on vacation with her friend Autumn, and rides an elevator to the future, where Autumn is in a coma from an accident that happened that summer. Main character travels 'up' another year, to where they're pulling Autunm's life support. Mc returns to save her. Lowkey horrific, but memorable. I'll reblog w/ a part 2!
Nobody understands the bond between a girl and the mediocre book she read when she was 13 years old.

"your ma must know you're a nice girl, though. she seemed proud of ya." katniss had no need of clothing after she's won the games — cinna always sent more than necessary for her, lilian and prim — but with hazelle and gale refusing to let her help with money, she'd find other ways to do things, dragging around the hawthorne children to town one day or another to get them all proper shoes (vick's feet were bigger than rory's, so the hand-me-down item had been a problem katniss herself noticed) and the cartwright were the best in town. mrs. cartwright had almost immediately asked her of peeta, which prompted the subject of delly, and that had been an uncomfortable afternoon but at least the kids had new shoes and that's what mattered. she furrows her brows at the mere thought of peeta being a troublemaker. "peeta? my peeta? partyin'?" now, that's…something. katniss is still suspicious that that could be a real possibility, when as much as he put on the necessary persona around these parts, he had been just as eager to leave these parties as she had.
maybe it's different, back home, with his friends. friends that haven't visited, and that he hasn't tried introducing her to. she tightens her jawline at the way delly speaks of it next, as a scolding, almost similar to that way peeta does with her, but less love — because delly doesn't love her, so she doesn't have to be really nice, just nice the way the girls from town are (or pretend to be). "maybe if he referred to any of those people as his friends, i would." she's just as harsh as she wants to be; katniss doesn't know how to play nice, after all, and the mention of prim doesn't work as well as it would any other time. "we'll see. when we're home, after this."
she is a bit surprised, or well, pleased that delly's alleged reaction to capitol insensitive opulence was disgust. at least that they had in common. "gross is a way of puttin’." what could you expect of people who televised child-murder every year? tickles the back of her mind, but is not uttered. "they do not understand it." she isn't trying to excuse capitolites — far from it. "even people who have been to twelve, like effie trinket are just…" katniss makes a grimace. "from another world." a world that there is no sadness, no hunger, no cold; a tiny world, built on other people's misery. "it's best to just… go along with it. or so i'm constantly told." bite your tongue, smile, look pretty, do not say what you're thinking. it's how she's supposed to survive in this odd world, and katniss hates it — even considering spending a day with peeta's merchant friends seems less of a torture if it means they'll do it at twelve, at home.
"or he's been ambush’d by some fan. he's got many of those here." not that she doubts that he could have been interested on the art pieces, but it's rare that they get to enjoy one of those parties, even in a mildly interesting place like this one (or maybe it's just her experience, in which she has barely managed to stare at an exhibition without someone swarming in tonight). katniss nods at delly's appreciation, before taking a few more steps in the direction of the finger foods. "i do not kid 'bout food." she takes a skewer that is a mix of shrimp and some fruit and bites off a shrimp first. "ya ever had seafood? they got tons of that here." the sea was simply not a thing back in twelve; she's seen people sell dry fish at the market in the square at weekends, but it's never anything as fresh as they do here (though annie had swore they can get even fresher at four).
Growing up Delly's mother had instilled good manners in her. Saying please and thank you, sitting properly, eating properly, it had all been so important to Tulla Cartwright to instill poise and manners into Delly. She had always had high expectations for her daughter and she expected Delly to marry well. Marrying another merchant was a way to stay afloat, but it was also an expectation put on Delly. The thought that Katniss might think that she was being rude or insensitive made her uncomfortable. "Thank goodness," she agreed when she said that nobody had died. "Oh, well, thank you. If you ever run into my mother could you tell her that?" Delly asked teasingly. The thought of her mother talking to Katniss was funny, she didn't think Katniss had ever stepped foot into her family's store. Her mother liked Peeta, though, so maybe she would like Katniss too. At her question, she smirked. "Wouldn't you love to know," she teased. She paused. "We have been known to party a little bit too much," she admitted, thinking of the parties in Ash's house. "That can lead to some problems."
This is what drives her crazy about Katniss. She wanted to ask why she thought that Peeta had to ask her to spend time with his friends. Delly may not have been married but she knew that it was a partnership, and that meant making sacrifices. She wanted to shake Katniss and tell her that she needed to do better by Peeta, but she doubted that that was what Peeta meant when he said to try with Katniss. "Well, I'm asking as his best friend. I think it would make him happy to see you spend a few minutes with his friends," she finally settled on. If Katniss took it the wrong way so be it, she was trying though. "I would be happy to spend some time with your family. Your sister seems so sweet."
Delly wondered if Katniss thought that she was dumb, wanting to be married. It really highlighted the difference in growing up in the merchant section of Twelve and the seam. Maybe for Katniss, being married wasn't everything that she had wanted, but Delly wanted to get married and have a family one day.
It was eye-opening, to see the differences in Twelve and in the Capitol. Delly had been fortunate enough to not suffer from starvation but that didn't take away from the fact that she had watched others struggle with it. Even though they had enough they didn't have excess. That was quickly becoming obvious to her, that the people in the Capitol had excess and they were wasteful in a way that they would never be in Twelve. If Delly had extra food she would give it to friends or someone that needed it. But here, they were vomiting for fun. "I couldn't believe it when I realized what was happening. It made me feel...gross," she told Katniss softly.
"I will have to find Peeta then at some point. I think he's gotten distracted by the paintings," she shook her head. She was sure that he was in art heaven here. Delly followed her over to the table, and she glanced at all of the offerings. There were things there that she had no idea what it was. She looked at the plate and took it from Katniss and then tried the ham. "You were not kidding, this is amazing."

This is real...? Chapter 6
Chapters 1 through 5 here
Despite the awkward exchange in his art studio, Peeta was very talkative on the way to the Meet Up. He asked about the setting, the food, what they were expected to do, and on and on. Katniss tried to keep her annoyance from showing but was failing miserably and Peeta finally got the hint. After they were checked in, Katniss deposited him with Finnick and dragged Jo to the bar.
“Damn, usually I’m the one begging you to drink with me.” Jo smirked as Katniss did two shots back-to-back. “What’s up?”
“It’s been over three weeks.” She picked up another and shot it back. “The longest we usually go is three days!” She threw her hands in the air.
“Shit dude, that sucks.” Jo grabbed Katniss’s last shot before she could. “You still have to drive home,” she reminded her and Katniss groaned – she hated driving but Peeta couldn’t remember their marriage, let alone driver’s training. “Well, you could always take care of it yourself.” Johanna had never been shy when it came to talking about sex and she was a firm supporter of taking care of your own needs. “You know my thoughts on that subject,” she said with a wink.
“Do you honestly still masturbate every day?” she asked seriously and Jo couldn’t help herself when she snorted.
“God, I love when you drink!” She clapped her hands. “And yes, every day.” She popped a few peanuts in mouth. “Depends on Finn, but usually in the shower.” Katniss furrowed her brow. “What?”
“What do you mean, depends on Finn?”
“He likes to watch.” She shrugged.
“WHAT?!” Katniss sputtered, sending Jo into another laughing fit. “Why? Isn’t that embarrassing?”
“No!” She finally managed to respond after calming down. “It’s actually kind of hot when he watches…and besides, it turns him on, so usually I get – ”
“Okay!” Katniss cut her off. “I’m buzzed, not drunk…I do not need to hear all of that!” While they had come a long way since they met, Katniss was still not as open as Jo…nor did she ever expect to be.
“All I’m saying is letting him hear you might inspire him.”
“Here.” Finnick pushed a glass across the table. Peeta picked it up and sniffed, wrinkling his nose. “Tastes better than it smells.” He took a small sip and started coughing. “Well, maybe it’s an acquired taste.”
“I don’t think I want to acquire that taste.” Peeta ran his tongue against the roof of his mouth in an attempt to rub off the bad flavor.
“I’ll wave down a waiter and we can order you a coke.” Finnick smirked and started looking around.
“No worries I’ll go get it…I want to grab some more food anyways.” Peeta excused himself and hurried away from the table.
Finnick sighed and shot back the rest of Peeta’s drink.
“Hey – where’s lover boy?” Jo asked as she dropped down into the seat next to her husband.
“I think I was making him uncomfortable; he went to get himself another drink, but I’m pretty sure he just needed some space.” He shrugged and grabbed some cheese off of the plate Jo had brought back with her.
“Oh, don’t worry – no one can make him as uncomfortable as I can.” Katniss pursed her lips as she picked pieces off her slice of bread. When neither of them said anything she looked up, only to notice they were avoiding her gaze. “Okay, what?”
Finnick slowly looked at Jo, who shrugged at him.
“Katniss, you know that I care about you, so I say this out of a place of friendship, but you are being a little selfish.” Her food stuck in her throat and she stared at her friends. “Listen, I understand that it’s frustrating to see him happy around his dad and brothers and then to be awkward around you, but it’s not even been a month since the accident – you have to give him some time.” She swallowed hard and looked at Jo, who nodded in agreement.
“Seriously Jo, you were just agreeing with me at the bar!”
“I do agree with you...” she paused and ran a find around the top of her glass. “No sex for three weeks does suck…but my guess is that losing your memories sucks too.”
Katniss furrowed her brow and looked down at her wedding band.
“But he isn’t even acting like Peeta right now.” She couldn’t help but remember the look on Peeta’s face the day she kissed him for helping her pass art class…I’m your fiancé, so it’s all right to kiss me any time you feel like it.
“He’s not acting like your Peeta?” Finn asked. She gave a small nod in return, an eyebrow raised in question. “That’s because he isn’tyour Peeta, not yet...it took him some time to get there and you are going to have to give him some time to get back there.”
Katniss was quiet for a moment as she thought. “Fuuuuck…you’re right. He isn’t my Peeta right now and if I want him to get back there, I should be helping him try to remember instead of making him feel guilty that he isn’t.” She sighed and sat forward, propping her elbows on the table. “But is it selfish of me to want him to put in some effort too?”
Finnick smiled at her, shaking his head.
“Fuck no!” Jo leaned back in her chair as she talked. “It’s just as important that he make an effort too!”
“Just remember, he is mentally 15…you might have to explicitly tell him that,” Finnick added.
She nodded and pushed herself away from the table before standing up. “If you will excuse me, I need to go find my husband.”
Peeta wondered around the room, watching all of the different groups of people. Effie had intercepted him before he was able to make it back to the buffet line and had talked at him for a solid ten minutes before someone interrupted them – whoever that person was, he was eternally grateful for them.
“Oh!” Peeta turned to look at who he had bumped into. “Sorry!” he said as his eyes turned down to the floor. “Oh…are you lost?” he asked a young girl, probably six years old.
“I’m looking for my parents,” she said quietly.
“Would you like me to help you?” She nodded. “Do you remember what they were wearing?”
“Mommy was wearing a blue dress – it was sparkly.”
“Blue, sparkly dress…here we come.” He reached down and took the girl’s hand and started searching the room for her parents. After a few minutes of asking the girl if four different women in blue dresses were her mother, he finally spotted a man that looked just like her. “I think I found your dad.” He gently pulled the girl after him as he made his way across the room. As they neared him, the woman he was talking to threw her head back laughing. She had to grab the man’s arm for support as she almost spilled her drink. As she continued to giggle, she stepped closer to him and Peeta could see she was wearing a blue, sparkly dress.
“Mommy!” The little girl let go of Peeta’s hand and ran towards her mom, flinging her arms around the woman’s legs.
“Megan!? What – What are you doing here?!” The woman looked down at her daughter with concern. “Why didn’t you page me from the Child Care Center?” she asked Peeta. He was momentarily confused before realizing that she thought he worked for the Initiative.
“I don’t work here…I just ran into her and thought she looked like she could use some help finding you two.” He nodded between her and the man.
“Two?” she practically shrieked as she stepped away from the man.
“Yes…you and her father,” Peeta said slowly.
“I’m not – ”
“HE’S NOT HER FATHER!” she yelled, interrupting the man.
“I’m sorry – I was just trying to help.” Peeta held up his hands in defense.
“What’s going on?” Katniss appeared at Peeta’s side, eyeing the woman.
“I found this girl and was trying to help her find her parents,” Peeta explained.
“We’ve already told you, this is not her father! Why do you keep saying that?” Megan’s mother stepped towards Peeta uneasily and part of her drink sloshed on the floor. “You ignorant – ”
“Ginny, I don’t think that was what he was trying to say.” The man placed his hand on her arm, pulling her back. “Megan, can you go find your father please?” He pointed to a table a few feet away. “I think it’s time – ”
“What is going on here?” An Initiative worker stepped in between Peeta and Ginny.
“It was just a misunderstanding…this young man was simply trying to help. Nothing more.” The man nodded to Peeta. “Thank you.”
“Of course.” Peeta gave the man a tight smile. The worker stared at the man and Ginny for a moment longer before dismissing Peeta.
As they were walking away, Katniss overheard the worker telling the two to follow him back to his office.
--
“What do you think will happen to them?” They were almost home and Peeta had been silent since the incident.
“I honestly don’t know.” Katniss shrugged as she turned down their street. “There are several couples in our region who everyone knows are in swingers clubs, but the Initiative just turns a blind eye to it because there isn’t usually any hard evidence of breaking Match Integrity.” She pulled in the garage and turned off the car. “I haven’t paid enough attention to know who the club members are.”
Peeta simply nodded and got out of the car, looking miserable.
“You know,” she closed her door and caught his hand before he went in the house, “It’s not your fault if anything happens to them? The Initiative makes it very clear what happens when you break the rules.”
“I know.” He nodded in agreement. “I still feel bad about it.” He turned away and she followed him in the house.
Peeta looked miserable as he shuffled into the living room and fell onto the couch. Katniss sat on the arm, picking at her nails, unsure how to approach the topic.
“Peeta, can I talk to you for a minute about something?” she finally asked.
He stared up at her, a look of panic on his face.
“I need to apologize,” she explained. He sat up and swung his feet back down to the ground. “I really should be focusing on helping you remember instead of being hurt that you don’t. I am sorry for not focusing on that.” He relaxed at her words. “But I am going to need your help with that.” Peeta nodded quietly. Recalling the look of embarrassment on his face from earlier that night, she added, “I won’t push you again.
--
One week later
It was Katniss’s day off and she had just driven Peeta to the bakery for his first day back. Normally, she would have been frustrated that their time off did not line up, but she was looking forward to some time alone. Getting out of the car she realized she had forgotten the mail and ran back out to the road to get it.
“Must be some cold nights for you two!” Haymitch stood on his porch, a cigarette in his hand.
She ground her teeth but kept her head down as she walked back towards the garage, ignoring his constant string of inappropriate comments.
“There must be some trouble in paradise!” This comment felt like a smack across her face.
Throwing her mail to the ground, she turned on her heal and stomped across their yard, yelling.
“THE HELL DO YOU KNOW ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS?!” She ran up his steps and screamed in his face. “THE ONLY PERSON YOU HAVE EVER CARED ABOUT IS YOURSELF! YOU CAN SHOVE YOUR OPINIONS ABOUT MY MARRIAGE UP YOUR ASS!”
Haymitch stood stone still, surprised by the proximity of his angry neighbor.
Katniss took a deep breath and stepped back.
“Go fuck yourself, Haymitch!” she spat and turned around, headed down the stairs.
“At least you still have him,” he mumbled as kicked his old rocking chair.
“What!?” She looked back at him in disbelief.
“Are you as stupid as you look!? How do you think someone gets as fucked up as me?!” He raised the bottle in his hand as a salute. “I get it, the Initiative sucks…and it probably caused you two a lot of heartache in the beginning.” She felt herself blush at the realness of his words. “But at least you two have each other – they ruined my life!” She stood at the bottom of his stairs staring at him, unsure of what to say. “Be grateful that car wreck didn’t take him away from you!” He dropped into his chair. “GET THE HELL OFF MY LAWN!” he yelled when she didn’t respond.
She blinked at him several times before moving her feet and scurrying back to her yard to retrieve her mail from the bushes.
