MD: Looks like three point three centimeters.

SB: Um, that number keeps going up for some reason…?

MD: Some tumors are like golden retrievers. They can still bite, but you don’t worry as much about them. Some are like rottweilers, and you have to train them very carefully because they can do a lot of damage. Yours is a rottweiler.

SB: Thank god. When my grandma’s cancer got in her lymph nodes, her arm swelled up like a sausage.

MD: No, no. The surface is still alive.

I liked the surgeon. She was sweet and soft-spoken and clearly was expecting someone more traumatized.

It was a very long ten days.

Captions: People on social media were really lovely. I read supportive comments whenever I could without crying. Publishers sent me flowers and bottles of wine. My husband was a saint. He always is, but more than usual.

“When I told her, Auntie Belinda insisted. She says, she knows how it is to work for that Green family and she knows what a body needs to stay strong enough for the soul,” Charlotte said, pouring out a liberal measure of Belinda’s fragrant dewberry shrub for Leah and a smaller cup for herself. She wasn’t working for the Greens but even being around the family, not even saving Mrs. Stringfellow, had a way of sapping the spirit. Leah took a long swallow and smiled.

“She’s a kind woman,” Leah said. She might have said something more but then a young boy appeared, laden with parcels wrapped in brown paper and tied with a vast quantity of string, far more than was needful.

“Miz Leah, this’m was sent for you and there’s others for a Missis Diggs.”

“I’m Missis Diggs,” Charlotte said. “What’s your name?

“Caleb, ma’am.”

“You got a place to sleep, Caleb?”

“Yes’m,” he said, scuttling off before she could say another word to him. Without the parcels, he was fleet of foot and eager to be off.

“Charlotte, would you read this? I know my letters but I don’t find it easy, and I admit, I’m powerful curious ‘bout what’s inside,” Leah said, handing her the card that was tucked within the labyrinth of string.

“It’s no trouble,” Charlotte said, opening the envelope, addressed in an elegant, copperplate hand to Miss Leah Jackson, Mansion House Hotel, Alexandria, Virginia.

“Madam,

I hope you will accept the enclosed items as adequate recompense for your personal belongings which lately suffered irreparable damage.

“Dear Lord!” Leah exclaimed as yards of watered silk spilled out of the paper wrapping, the hue Mary simply called bluea rich, shimmering azure shading into cobalt. There was a quantity of intricately embroidered ivory lace net and then, seemingly miles below, a length of a cheerful calico in a tawny shade pricked out with red and yellow blossoms, a housewife full of needles and thread, buttons, ribbon, and plenty of fine white muslin for petticoats and chemise. Charlotte opened the card attached to her own package, glimpsed Dr. Foster’s signature with its bold flourishes and Mary’s briefer message He will have his own way—I dissuaded him from the dahlia at least! M as she saw taffeta in the vivid yellow of a summer sunset fill her own lap. It rustled delicately as if it had a thousand secrets to confide.

“What’s he thinkin’? This is—I ain’t never seen anything like this,” Leah said, touching the silk with a gentle hand. The color was intense, jewel-like, and perfectly suited to Leah. Charlotte knew she would never have picked out the rich gold taffeta for herself but she was also well aware she would have lingered over it at the dry goods store, if there was ever a dry goods store for black people that regularly stocked such luxurious items and she could bring herself to spend the money on something entirely frivolous when so much was needed by so many.

“This is Dr. Foster, pure ‘n simple. He’s a magpie, a peacock, you’ve only to look at how he dresses himself,” Charlotte replied, smiling. “But he’s a man, he’s only allowed vests to splash out. And Mrs. Foster won’t stand for a lot of fol-de-rol or flash.”

“But I heard the blonde lady, the one in a dress so bright looks like she stole down the sky, she said she was Miz Foster. Had been, somesuch chatter,” Leah said, shaking her head.

“Oh, her. I meant the Mrs. Foster he loves,” Charlotte said.

“She’s the one sendin’ buttons and thread?” Leah asked.

“Yes. She knows what’ll be needed to make a dress out of all this,” Charlotte said. “One you can work in. She’s no stranger to work, nor to these kitchens.”

“She a friend of yours?”

“You might say that,” Charlotte replied.

“And that Doctor Foster? He a friend too?” Leah said, not put off by Charlotte’s sudden brevity.

“I don’t rightly know what I’d call him,” Charlotte shrugged. The man he’d been, no, but who he’d become… he wanted to be trusted, she knew that, but she couldn’t be sure. Leah laughed.

“You called him a peacock, not two minutes ago. There’s your answer, ain’t it?”

OUAT: Emma and Lupus

I wonder if it’s possible that Emma has Lupus. Has anyone else talked about the possibility of this?

I keep thinking about Myrna and Martin (Archie’s parents) listing symptoms they had.

And while the symptoms didn’t initially make me think Lupus, there’s one glaring thing that is present on the show from the beginning that did. And that’s memory loss.

Which is a main symptom of Lupus. Along with headaches and confusion.

People with Lupus can literally be forgetful. From forgetting something they just learned to forgetting their own last name.

The thing with Lupus is that it can lead to a host of complications. From kidney failure to heart disease.

It could also be part of why Ruby is a (were)wolf. Since another word for wolf or wolf-related things is lupine, which kind of sounds like Lupus.

Maybe the wolf appearing in the road in the pilot was also the show’s way of letting us know Emma’s Lupus was causing problems for her. We already know that the wolf is a metaphor. Most likely for more than one thing. So why not this? There is also the fact that a main feat of Ruby’s lupine nature before she got control of it was that she blacked out. She’d lose time, be unable to remember what happened in said lost time once she came to.

Going back to Martin and Myrna’s symptoms, they then do fit in as possible complications or symptoms of Lupus.

Martin: “It's my hip.”

This could refer to joint pain, also a symptom of Lupus.

Myrna: “My liver.”

Infection is a complication of Lupus. So maybe that could include Lupus-induced liver infection (Hepatitis). Emma has also mentioned that she almost got Hepatitis once. (Lupus) drugs reacting badly with alcohol could also lead to liver problems.

Martin: “I got lumps in strange places.”

Cancer is a another complication of Lupus. Apparently it’s rare but it happens.

Myrna: “I've got burning sensations.”   

Again, infection. Burning sensations in Myrna specifically make me think Urinary Tract Infection(UTI). Women have a shorter urethra than men so they’re already more susceptible to UTI’s than men.

Then there’s a thing that’s always bothered me. I wasn’t the first one to notice this, but when Emma crashes her car in the pilot there is weirdness happening just before, if I remember correctly. She looks sleepy or dizzy or something. Only then the wolf appears out of nowhere and I think when she tries to swerve she crashes her car. But I feel like they’ve told us that Emma couldn’t have gotten drunk off of the one drink. So aside from Regina putting something in her drink to keep her from leaving, which is a legitimate possibility, maybe she has some kind of illness that made her dizzy, maybe lowered her alcohol tolerance and then made her dizzy.

I think Lupus can do that, reduce one’s alcohol tolerance, or rather the medicine Lupus patients have to take. Of course, drugs/medicine themselves have side effects such as dizziness.

I also have a feeling Henry was born prematurely. Which is also a complication when pregnancy is mixed with Lupus.

The Yellow Ribbon is apparently also the ribbon of Troops, Amber Alerts, Suicide Prevention, Adoptive Parents and Hope. All themes addressed on OUAT.

I added this Awareness Ribbons Chart because it’s also interesting to look at the ribbons for the different colors for magic used on this show.

I mean, green has: Missing children, Organ donation, different types of cancer and Childhood depression.

Black which was arguably Regina’s magic color in the pilot stands for mourning.

Purple has: aside from Lupus, Religious tolerance and Domestic violence.

Red has: Substance Abuse, Heart Disease, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and Substance Abuse.

(I only mentioned the ones I think this show has dealt with in some way, shape or form.)

I’m going to laugh if Emma does have Lupus though, not because Lupus is a laughing matter. Because it’s really not. You can die from the complications of Lupus.

But I’m going to laugh because I’d forgotten about this, but Lupus was kind of a running joke diagnosis on House MD when the interns couldn’t figure out a diagnosis that fit.

And we’ve been trying to figure out the medical angle to OUAT, what’s possibly medically wrong with Emma (and Henry) for a while. 

I think Lupus isn’t as uncommon as House made it seem, it’s just hard to diagnose, given the myriad of possible symptoms that if you only have two general ones can lead to being misdiagnosed.

                Many know it and a lot fear it. It appears like a thief in the night or even overnight. It will not let you ignore it. What am I talking about the big C, cancer? As we, all know cancer can affect the young and old. It can come in many forms.

      Breast cancer is on strand of cancer that was known to affect just women, but has been recently found to affect men also. I have seen up close and personal the affects of breast cancer in not one, but two family members under the age of forty- three. As these two young women fight the battle with breast cancer they both went through many obstacles.

Many may not know the way breast cancer affect one’s body, mind, and soul. There are several types of breast cancer. Here are two categories of breast cancer:

·         Invasive (infiltrating) breast cancer: Cancerous cells break through normal breast tissue barriers and spread to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and lymph nodes.

·         Noninvasive (in situ) breast cancer: Cancerous cells remain in a particular location of the breast, without spreading to surrounding tissue, lobules or ducts.

Breast cancer is also classified based on where in the breast the disease started (e.g., milk ducts, lobules), how the disease grows and other factors. The tabs on the left provide an overview of common breast cancer types, common subtypes and rare types. Breast cancer’s causes are not exactly clear. Studies have identified numerous risk factors for breast cancerin women, including hormonal, lifestyle and environmental factors that may increase the risk of the disease. Other factors include:

§  Increasing age

§  Personal history of breast cancer

§  Early menstruation

§  Late menopause

§  A first pregnancy after age 30 or no prior pregnancies

§  Use of oral contraceptives

§  Family history of breast cancer

§  Presence of certain inherited genetic changes

§  History of radiation therapy to the chest

§  Long-term use of combined hormone therapy

§  Alcohol use

§  Obesity after menopause.

      Breast cancer is a disease characterized by cells in the breast that become abnormal and multiply uncontrollably, forming a tumor. If left untreated, malignant cells may eventually spread beyond the original tumor to other parts of the body, a process called metastasis. Hormones also play a role in the development of certain types of breast cancer. Signs of breast cancer include skin changes, pain, nipple discharge, a lump and other symptoms.

                              According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women who live to be age 80 will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This makes the disease the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, after skin cancer. An estimated 255,180 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States in 2017, according to the American Cancer Society.  

   As you can see this disease is on the rise. 1 out of 8 may not seem to be a lot but it is when it comes to a small group of people. The treatments for breast cancer has improved over the years but we still have a long way to go for 100% survival.

    Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American women. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime. But advances in breast cancer treatment mean many women can expect to beat the disease and maintain their physical appearance.

     A campaign using lemons to teach women to recognize breast cancer symptoms and to break the taboos of discussing the condition has gone viral and has been used to educate people all around the world. The #KnowYourLemons campaign, from the charity Worldwide Breast Cancer, uses a set of easily understandable visuals, in which pictures of lemons have been altered to illustrate 12 key changes in the breasts that could indicate the presence of breast cancer.

    Breast cancer is one of the most highly publicized cancers in the media today. Local and national breast cancer awareness events are reminders of its prevalence. Many of us know someone who previously had or is currently battling breast cancer. Fortunately, advancements in breast cancer research provide new treatment options and technologies for those battling the disease.  This October 1 -30, 2017 people around the world will be recognizing breast cancer awareness month. Within this month, there will be many fundraisers and other events to make people more aware of this illness. The fundraisers also help with research for a cure for breast cancer. During this month many will wear a pink ribbon to show support for love ones or themselves that are survivor or have this cancer. At the top of the page I placed a picture of a very close friend of mine that was diagnose with this disease. I will always be by her side as she fight to remain health after all her treatment.

              Support your local city and state during the month of October for breast cancer. Find the bike rides, walks, and the one I like is the men in heels walk and join in the fun while helping to save a life.  To make sure you are free from this disease get tested. This test is not only for women it for you men also. Let us save ourselves and see many more days on this beautiful earth.

This month, there will be thousands of events and pink ribbons in honor of breast cancer awareness, but for Deb Ragosta, there is one day in particular that will be the most meaningful. On Oct. 13, she will celebrate Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, a proclamation she successfully lobbied for and received from the Massachusetts Legislature last year.

Ragosta, a patient and Marketing/Community Education Coordinator at Milford (MA) Regional Medical Center, was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990 at age 35. Following treatment under Mona Kaddis, MD, Ragosta was cancer free for almost 20 years. In 2009, however, an accident changed her life. After jumping on a trampoline at her young cousin’s birthday party, Ragosta hurt her back. X-rays revealed suspicious lesions on her spine and scalp. A biopsy concluded that she had stage IV metastatic breast cancer.

The first National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day occurred in 2009, shortly before Ragosta’s diagnosis. Wanting to bring the awareness to a more local and personal level, Ragosta reached out to Milford’s State Representative John Fernandes. Three separate proclamations were quickly approved by the Massachusetts Senate, House, and Governor Deval Patrick.

“October is the cruelest month for us because you cannot get away from pink. It is on everything you see and touch. Twenty years ago, I would have done anything to know someone else my age dealing with this,” Ragosta says. “Now it’s time to move beyond awareness and focus on the research and education. I definitely think there is a misconception that there is a cure.”

In 2010 about 155,000 women and men were living with metastatic breast cancer in the United States and more than 40,000 are dying from it per year. The median survival after diagnosis is three years, and this statistic has shown little improvement over the last 20 years. An estimated 30 percent of women with earlier stages of breast cancer eventually develop metastatic breast cancer, normally in the lungs, liver or, like Ragosta, in the bones.

This year, Ragosta will spend Oct. 13 receiving treatment at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford, MA and will get to see the newly framed proclamations unveiled.
