okay so, I just read a post where someone described the royals as weird little freaks (paraphrasing) and was talking about how terrible the family dynamics are in the british royal family, and I completely agree.
But it also made me realize why I hate that royalty/courtly drama/whatever fantasy novels these days (especially YA it seems) gets criticized as being pro-monarchy and classist if the author doesn't have someone abolish the royal family and make the country a democracy at the end: I love watching fucked up little freaks be fucked up little freaks. I love it when the main character has flaws, even if they're as petty as becoming queen and not immediately Mother Theresa-ing and giving everything to charity. And frankly, I also enjoy a good fairy tale where maybe things don't end awfully and the servant girl becomes a princess, the prince is good and kind etc.
Like yes, it's horrible IRL, the royal family's children should not be locked into such a restrictive life full of generational trauma, the people who married into the family should be treated better, etc. but in fiction can we not just explore the space without copy-pasting the plot onto the author's political stances??
#maybe this isn't as common as i think but ive seen a fair amount of reviews that just throw in 'oh and the MC becomes queen bc the author#is a monarchist' or something. I think people mainly use it as an extra insult in like reviews of YA books they think are shitty#like listen there are some very good books about abolishing the monarchy. but not every book has to be about that#and that's not the kind of thing you can just slap onto the ending of a story and have work lol#also idk people could probably do a backbend and read some pretty pro-monarchy shit into North#bc of the way like. queens come into existence in Anteria. but like...let me play in my space pls#let me smash my paper dolls together#without having baseless insults thrown at me about some celebrities i barely pay attention to
