#you get what you see#first time doing picrew#admittedly my face isn't built for digital art#have a headache now#but this was still fun#like imagining them as part of a society that evolved past the need for true wings#and has only the wings on their heads as remnants#but their history culture society is still based on flight#so people started to build their own or have people build them mechanical wings#and being a scrap mechanic#rust just is very about it and doesn't add any aesthetic bits to their wings#very fun to think about#especially since ii'm also very into true form and deformed angels#maybe other angels pursue genetic experiments to restore their wings#maybe their ancestors didn't hardly have humanoid forms at all#maybe they were masses of eyes and mouths and wings more then dexterous little handlers#maybe...#angelverse#not my tag but it's where ii found it and ii like what you can find there

It was true that Frye's ancestors, the squids that her family had evolved from came from the depths of the sea, and it was also true that the ever popular Calamari Inkantation, which was a folk song that had been passed down through inkfish culture in both Inkadia and the Splatlands for generations, was a song singing reverence for the bounty of the sea; a thank you to the place that had brought them all their beginnings in life.
But neither of these things changed the simple fact that inklings had lost their ability to actually swim in deep waters a long, long time ago. These days, if you were an inkling in Splatsville or Inkopolis who was unfortunate enough to trip and fall into water deeper than that of a bathtub, it was a fantastic way to send yourself right on back to the nearest respawn point, as you would have dissolved into a cloud of ink.
So for Frye to suddenly find herself completely underwater after having passed through the gate at the bottom of the hole... her golden eyes had instantly shot open wide in pure shock, thrashing wildly against the unfamiliar feeling of water pressing against her entire body in an instinctive panic that, if one didn't know about why it was such a bizarre thing for her to be experiencing, would have looked quite uncharacteristic for the squid who was usually so carefree.
Thankfully, it only took her a moment or so longer for it to suddenly occur to her that not only had she not exploded into a cloud of her own ink from being submerged as suddenly as she had been, but she was even still breathing down here, somehow.
Experimentally, she carefully twisted her body around, as if to test that she was actually here, actually underwater.
"...huh. This isn't that bad... it's kind of like a form of dance, in a way! Everything feels so much more weightless down here!"
Her own voice had come out garbled by the water as well, but Frye hardly seemed to notice, as she twirled around in a circular motion once before attempting a full-on back-flip right through the water. As she performed the latter move, she caught a proper glimpse at the long, yellow and orange tail that appeared to be in place where her legs should have been.
Honestly, had it not been for the water all around her, she probably would have laughed.
So she was part eel herself now then, or at least something kinda like that? Cool! Maybe that would mean she'd get a chance to understand her beloved companions in a way she never could have dreamed of doing before, and she could even find some treasure while doing so!
Out of the corner of her eye, she had spotted someone peering into the entrance of a cave down below while Frye was busy testing the capabilities of her new form. Were they here to investigate as well? In that case, they could probably use some help! And she could use the swimming practice to reach them anyways.
And practice it indeed was, as it became evident very fast as she tried to make her way over to the stranger that she didn't actually have much of an idea of what she was doing.
Twists, twirls and flips were all great and were all things she was quite practiced with as a dancer, but no matter how you sliced it, she wasn't used to swimming in a humanoid body. Nor was she used to the incredibly long eel tail that she currently had, for that matter. Which way was she supposed to move her arms to propel herself through the waves faster..? Was she supposed to move her tail like this, or like this?
"...ugh, the eels make it look so easy when they do it!"

♚ : and beyond the gate, there had been an ocean. it had been ages since miko had seen the sea - and never before had she seen it from this perspective. beneath the waves she could not see, far far below the surface, it seemed that the light was unable to reach these depths. so why was it that she still found herself able to see, even now as she peered into one of the light-starved caves that riddles the ocean floor?
'curious - ' but her voice came out garbled, distorted by the water. even if the strange fins that dotted her arms were an acceptable change, to be unable to speak properly down here was... concerning. was there a way around that? surely there would be another adaptation thrust upon her by the gods of this place.
in the meanwhile, all she could do was wave at the approaching individual swimming towards her.
#princevirtue#princevirtue (1)#ir event: down you go#I'm so sorry about how long this is you don't have to match at all#she's just “WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M UNDERWATER? WHAT DO YOU MEAN I'M SWIMMING???”
