I have to explain what is going on in the UK, because it is absurd.

So, this is Gary Lineker:

He's known for a fair few things over here. He was a very good (association) footballer, playing for England in the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, winning the Golden Boot in 1986, and managing to never get a single yellow card in his playing career. He played for Leicester City, Everton, Barcelona, and Tottenham, before finishing his career in Japan. But if you aren't in your mid 30s, you probably know actually know him him for a couple of other things. The first is the role of spokesman for another Leicester icon, Walkers Crisps (which are sort of equivalent to Lays, but hit different), as pictured above. Despite being a notably clean player, he used to play a cheeky serial crisp thief. I don't think he's done that for well over a decade, but his ads were on the telly a lot when I was a kid and it's a bit like learning that the hamburglar was an incredibly clean (American) football player or something.

The second thing Gary is widely known for is having presented Match of the Day, the big football program on the BBC, the sort-of state broadcaster, since 1999. He is, incidentally, very well paid for this (though with a consensus that he could get even more if he went to one of the non-free-to-view broadcasters because he is very good at the job). He also has a twitter account. And political opinions. So, the UK government has got itself dead set upon doing heinous stuff that will totally somehow work to prevent people who want to come to the UK making the perilous crossing of the Channel (between England and France). By heinous, I mean "openly advertise that they won't attempt to protect victims of modern slavery" stuff. It's very obviously using a legal hammer to victimise a marginalised group of people in order to win votes. And, uh, I should clarify that by "legal" I mean "using the passage of laws" - the policy is, in addition to all the other ways it's awful, probably incompatible with the Human Rights Act and the UK's international law obligations. Gary, top lad that he is, objected to this. On Tuesday 7th March, he made a quote Tweet of a video of the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, bigging up the policy, he wrote "Good heavens, this is beyond awful.". This got a bunch of backlash from extremely right-wingers, and then he made the tweet that really got him in trouble (with right-wingers): "There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries. This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?".

Now, I am not actually subjecting myself to watching a video of Suella Braverman bigging up a cruel policy to say whether the specific comparison of the language to 1930s Germany is accurate. But needless to say, Ms Braverman was amongst the many figures on the right of UK politics objecting to Gary's rhetoric. And here's the part where a fact about the BBC comes in: it is nominally neutral and impartial (and so, of course, is routinely accused of bias from all sides but particularly the right-wing), and has something of a code for its contributors to this effect. Now, that code has previously been applied to Gary Lineker, over a comment about whether governing Conservative Party would hand back donations from figures linked to the Russian regime. But it generally hasn't been applied too strongly to people like Gary, whose roles have nothing to do with politics (such as presenting a "here's what happened on the footie today" show), on the basis that, well, their roles have nothing to do with politics. However, when directly asked about whether the BBC should punish Gary Lineker for his tweets, government figures basically went "well, that's a them problem". But a couple of days passed, and it seemed like Gary's approach of "standing his ground because he did nothing wrong" was working and everything would die down. He was set to get 'a talking to' but not much more than that. The Conservative right, after all their fire and fury earlier, had gotten bored and moved onto something else. And then, on Friday 10th March, the BBC announced that he would be suspended from hosting Match of the Day this weekend. But it could still go ahead, because there are, like, other hosts! Except, well, funnily enough, when you take a beloved figure off air, for making a fairly anodyne tweet, no one wants to be the scab who actually takes up the role of replacing him. Gary's two co-hosts, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, said that they would not appear without him. People who (co-)host Match of the Day on other days followed suit. The net result is that Match of the Day is currently set to air without hosts, BBC commentary, or global feed commentary. And the solidarity shown to Gary Lineker, over what is very flagrantly actual cancel culture and an attack on freedom of speech (the logic implied is that institutional impartiality requires that no one say anything too critical of the government ever), has continued to grow. The BBC has pretty much been unable to run pretty much any live sports content today, and has resorted to raiding the BBC Sounds archive to fill the sports radio channel. And, as of 17:30 on Saturday 11th March, the situation shows no signs of improvement, though some are calling for the Chairman Richard Sharp, who is separately facing corruption allegations, to resign (yes I linked to the BBC itself there, there is nothing, nothing, the BBC loves more than going into great detail about how much the BBC sucks).

A London derby.

Arsenal vs Chelsea.

There were loads of nicknames for the match because ultimately, it was one of the most exciting games of the season.

The fans were excited for it, the players were excited for it, but you and a certain Chelsea defender wasn’t.

You dreaded the match, and so did Niamh, if not more.

Niamh was a defender, you were a striker. The thought of Niamh hurting you killed her.

You and Niamh had gone up against each other before, many times, but this time was different.

This was the continental cup final.

Arsenal were determined to keep their hands on the trophy, but Chelsea were just as determined to take it off of them.

When you awoke early on the morning of Easter Sunday, thanks to Niamh pressing soft kisses to your shoulder blade, you couldn’t help but cuddle into her, the dreaded feeling of playing against her sinking into your mind.

After a while of a comfortable silence taking over the room, you pulled away from Niamh, a serious look on your face.

“Promise me that no matter what the score is, we’ll be lying like this tonight.” You said to Niamh whilst a soft smile appeared on her face.

“I promise, love. Remember, Football will always come second when it comes to you.” Niamh told you and you nodded, agreeing with her words.

“You’ll always come first too.” You stated, pressing your lips on hers.

The rest of the morning you had free sped by and before you knew it, you and Niamh’s were going your separate ways.

“Nervous about playing against Niamh?” Beth asked you, noticing that your leg was bouncing and your hands were fidgeting with whatever you could touch.

“Yeah. A bit.” You responded, sending a weak smile to her.

“Speak of the devil, she’s just messaged me to see how you are. Isn’t that sweet? I remember when you first met. It was love at first sight. And god was my ears chewed off by you going on and on about how you loved Niamh.” Alessia, who was sat next to you, teased you before telling the whole coach the story of how you and Niamh met.

It was true, Alessia had been there when you and Niamh met for the first time.

In fact, she had been the one to introduce you to one another.

You had joined the youth age groups later than everyone else but Alessia had taken you under wing and had introduced you to all her friends, including Niamh.

From then on, Alessia became your best friend, along with Tooney, the three of you becoming an iconic trio.

And you and Niamh grew closer too. Becoming friends and then realising the growing crush on her, before finally, after months of flirting with one another, Niamh asked you on a date.

That was nearly eight years ago and you’re still just in love with Niamh as if you were when you were sixteen.

“Less, stop it.” You told her, nudging her shoulder as she continued to tell embarrassing stories of you when you were teenagers.

“Yeah but I’m right in the middle of when you slipped on the ball when we were in Jordan.” Alessia said as the girls laughed.

“Well at least I didn’t have our coach performing the Heimlich manoeuvre on me because I was chocking on spaghetti. Some Italian you are.” You fired back, a grin taking over your face as Alessia’s face dropped.

“You promised to not tell anyone about that.” Alessia complained, rolling her eyes as Kyra fell to the coach floor laughing. “And I’m half Italian by the way.”

Your mind went foggy as tiredness took over it.

You rested your head on Alessia’s shoulder who immediately cuddled up to you and fell asleep.

It was a normal occurrence to fall asleep on the way to away matches, especially to fall asleep on Alessia.

Alessia and you always sat next to each other on the coaches and with your capability to fall asleep anywhere, it was normally her who had to deal with your snoring.

After two hours of sleeping, you were awoken by Kyra who was excited to play her first final for Arsenal.

Before long, you were walking out of the tunnel to complete a pitch inspection.

Noticing Niamh on the other side of the pitch, you split up from Kyra and Alessia and approaches Niamh.

A smile grew on Niamh’s face as she spotted you, opening her arms as she enveloped you in a hug.

You didn’t say anything, it was just a hug made of pure love for one another.

You broke away from the hug, reaching out to rest a hand on her cheek before pressing a light kiss on her lips.

“I’ll see you later, okay?” Niamh said, your face centimetres away from hers.

“You will. I love you, Niamhy.”

“I love you too, pretty girl.”

And with that, you went your separate ways, you going back to Alessia and Kyra, and Niamh going back to Zecira.

After an eventful game that went into extra time, the full time whistle blew.

It had been one hell of a match to say the least.

With the score being 0-0 through most of the game, to Frida collapsing on the pitch, to you scoring the winning goal just four minutes before full time.

The whole entire arsenal team gathered round celebrating.

It was as if you were dual natured in that moment.

One half of you wanted to celebrate with all your teammates, but the other half wanted to go and wrap Niamh in a hug.

You opted for both. Spending time with your teammates for a few minutes before going off to find Niamh.

“Niamhy, I’m so sorry.” You began but Niamh turned around with a light smile on her face.

“Don’t say sorry, love. I’m so proud of you.” Niamh opened her arms once again as you found your spot in between them. “You go celebrate. I’ll see you at home later, okay? We can have all the cuddles in the world then. I promise.”

Niamh stuck to her promise.

As you arrived back in London that night, most of the team decided to go out celebrating but you decided to get back home, desperately wanting to see Niamh.

After lots of teasing about you and Niamh, you eventually got away from them all and drive home.

Niamh was already waiting for you in bed, burying your head in her chest as you laid down next to her.

All of the dread had gone.

You were now in your happy place. Your safe space. You were with your Niamh.

i completely agree with maria tikas. it's one of the best kit announcements that barça has made in recent memory and really does a great job capturing the essence of the club, barcelona, and catalunya. note that barça and nike are about to launch a blockbuster deal that with the improvements in global shipping and international markets, they are starting off with a bang!

so i won't do a frame by frame breakdown, but here are some of the most inspired parts of the video:

barça/brasil - we start with showcasing the long connection between barça and brasil with global icon ronaldinho and then current brasil star, raphinha. next we flash to lamine. lamine isn't brasilian but he has a beautiful creative style of play that shows how the brasil influence has translated to the younger generation in combination with the classic barça way.

facetime call between balde, pau gasol, and hristo stoichkov - this links barça football with the other sections in our club and historical players. gasol is one of the most famous basketballers ever for spain who played at barça before going to the nba. stoichkov was part of the famous johan cruyff dream team for barça

pa amb tomàquet - this tomato bread is one of the most famous and popular dishes in catalunya and you see it everywhere. here, pau cubarsí (the catalan kid) is teaching our foreign players araujo and lewandowski how to properly make the dish. (rub the tomato, don't cut it!)

inesta's "double" croqueta - i loved this part. we see iniesta making croquetas, which is a fried dumpling with meat or vegetables inside. but croqueta is also iniesta's signature ball handling move on the pitch. a play on words!

ball/ballon d'or - one hidden detail. ronaldinho picks up a leather ball and we see the ball all throughout the video, including another player who is carrying the ball, and that's aitana, representing a past and current ballon d'or winner.

pilarín bayés - pilarín is such a decorated artist from catalunya (catalunya has such a rich history of art) and so to have pilarín talk about barça's style of play is a great way to combine the two (and you have pedri and fermín being her students!)

barça femení as castellers - castellers/castells or human castles is a catalan tradition going back centuries and often happens during the big festivals. essentially each layer needs to work together to complete the mission of completing the tower. the base layer of a castell looks like a football huddle and here the women are dressed as castellers on the pitch showing the importance of teamwork.

classic barça moments - and all throughout the video we have so much old footage of classic moments from barça history from johan cruyff's flying kick v. atletí to alexia bowing at camp nou during record breaking crowds. this is the 125th anniversary of the club that is steeped in so much history, so this is a way to celebrate that.

anyway, there's even more to break down including iconic barcelona landmarks and other famous moments from matches, but these are my favourite parts. it's just a well made video! 🫶💙❤️
