There are two revelations from the journal I wanted to ask if you were planning on ignoring or incorporating them:

Yunan's dad soiling their family's name;

Joe Sparrow being found on an island AAA!Marcy has no reason to ever go to.

The second would be pretty sad, if a little ironic considering how many pets Marcy has in this AU.

Yunan's Dad soiling the family name Not originally however this chapter has been redrafted so many times that it actually has made it into the draft. In my original outline Yunan was actually an orphan from a young age. However I think her dad soiling the family name works better for the themes Im going for

Joe Sparrow being found on an island So this one I am also incoroporating as a 'This is an effect of swap AU' Originally I had an elaborate explanation for why Andrias had any bird calvary but would lend it out to Yunan or Sasha. The explanation. Short version was the Night Guard had like two or three trained birds and Birds bonded to their riders until they died (implying that Andrias had one such rider killed in canon for Marcy's sake) However it would have been clunky and I think the fact that birds just arn't commonly tamable is a more succinct explanation for Joe's absence. Though he will be missed. Such a good birb ;_;

What do you think of Javi, Kettle and Femur? How do you think a reunion with Marcy after the timeskip would go? I love your work!

It would've been great to have seen them in show, hell since Javi and Kettle move to Stony Gulch (where the Curator was) it woulda been neat to see them in the background. They had an interesting dynamic with Marcy according to her journal and I wouldn't mind a short 5-6 ep mini-series about Marcy joining the Night Guard, making Chief Ranger, leading her team to deal with the Cult of the Olm and the fight.

(also, is it me or were they analogies of the Calamity Trio? Javi, the charismatic, well-groomed, fancy and big ego'd newt is Sasha. Kettle the short tempered, wild hair, whom ppl doubt newt is Anne and Femur, the large, quiet, classically trained musician, sensitive newt (axolotl?) is Marcy and then Javi and Kettle getting together after the group's adventure is foreshadowing?)

Well, finished reading Marcy’s Journal and I’m not entirely sure how to feel about it. There were some parts I really liked, some parts that hurt with the foreshadowing (basically 99% of the Andrias-related parts), and then parts that felt kinda dragging. I’ll go into a full depth spoiler review under the cut here.

So, parts I liked. The parts involving Andrias all hurt, but were great. I liked seeing Marcy get to build up her own crew in Newtopia (though now I’m sad that they’re also included in the goodbyes the trio never got to have). All the entries involving characters reuniting were great too. You could really feel the excitement of them being back together.

I love seeing more of Marcy’s autistic traits (maybe she wasn’t initially meant to be autistic, but as an autistic person, she just spoke to me this entire book). Her not liking the texture of eggs, how she doesn’t really let her geek flag fly even with Sasha and Anne, her wishing she was better at people, her clinging to Anne and Sasha because she doesn’t think anyone else would really give her the time of day, it all speaks to the neurodivergent experience.

I liked seeing more of Anne’s thoughts regarding Sasha and Marcy in 3A, especially that one where she felt really desperate and was talking in all caps about how no one else was understanding how bad it was and how she was the only one who could save everyone. I wish we could have gotten like a whole episode on that in place of one of the “Wacky Adventures on Earth” eps. 

The story of Anne and Marcy’s first meeting, oh my god, it was so cute! Just little Anne and Marcy at the beach trying (and failing) to protect Marcy’s giant sandcastle 🥺

The True Colors entry was heartbreaking. The hurried handwriting showing Marcy’s turmoil, the darker spots where tears had previously fell, the charred portions of the page, the “WHAT have I DONE?”, the last words that Marcy would write in that journal until after the invasion just being “I’m so sorry” in such small text...

That entry freaking got me.

But I guess onto the not so positive parts.

We still know hardly anything when it comes to Marcy’s or Sasha’s family life. On Sasha’s side, we know that Sasha’s parents both have different partners now and and one of those partners also has kids. Not really anything on which parent she’s living with, the custody situation in general, or the family dynamics. But I can understand the book not going into it much since it was in Marcy and Anne’s point of views, not Sasha’s.

On Marcy’s, we know they held off moving until Marcy came back, had a birthday celebration for Marcy’s 13th, and that they cried when reuniting with Marcy. That’s it really. Given that this was Marcy’s journal and the majority of it was in her own point of view, I expected at least a few more hints.

Then there was the sorta “Episode Commentary” effect once we got to the point in the series where Marcy and Anne reunited. At first, it was kinda nice getting to see Marcy’s (and later Anne’s) inner thoughts to the plot at hand. 

But after a while (probably partway through S2B for me), it was just feeling a little repetitive. And I was definitely feeling tired of it through a good chunk of the S3A bits.

This “Episode Commentary” feel was at its most obvious for me with the S3 entries Anne wasn’t in. 3x07b aka the one where Marcy was possessed? She just happens to be thinking a lot about Marcy then. 3x16b with the Andrias backstory? Now, Anne’s wondering exactly what his deal is and how he became the way that he is. 

I’m not saying that either of those entries were bad (I actually liked both of them), but it’s definitely evident that they put those entries at those spots to act sort of like a placeholder to the fact that Anne doesn’t appear in those episodes and thus doesn’t have a POV to share.

I wish there was more sort of “between the episodes” type content where we could hear more about the adventures that might have happened off screen. That’s what I loved about the first arc in the book, it was almost all new content to us. Names and faces that we either hasn’t seen or had, but barely knew anything about. It gave new depth to the world of Amphibia and its characters.

If not that, then perhaps piggybacking off of events in canon. Like, we know Anne sent those letters to Sasha and Marcy’s parents, maybe there would have been an entry where they got the letters and talked to the Boonchuy parents about it and then Anne’s parents talk about it with her. Still goes with canon while giving us more new content.

Overall, I liked the book. I don’t regret buying it and I raced through it in like two hours. But I do get the same vibes from it that I got from Amphibia S3: it had the potential to be great, but turned out to be simply good. 

That’s just my two cents though.

Marcy's Journal Spoilers!

So you know how one of my most common complaints about Amphibia season 3A is that Sasha and Marcy's parents were never addressed? And how I wish we had at the very least gotten a throwaway line from Anne in The New Normal about how they shouldn't contact the girls' families until they can get her friends home safe and sound?

Well lo and behold, in Anne's section of Marcy's Journal we get exactly that. We actually get a brief entry describing how Anne and her parents talked things over and decided not to contact Sasha and Marcy's parents lest they get the authorities involved, potentially putting the Plantars in danger. It was immensely satisfying.

Sure some might argue that the Boonchuys still unintentionally come off as assholes by purposely withholding information about Sasha and Marcy, basically allowing their parents to continue living every parent's worst nightmare of not knowing if their missing daughters are dead or worse, and I can see that point. But at least the Journal actually gives us some reason as to why they didn't bring the Waybrights and Wus in. The actual show didn't even bother with the explanation, and as a consequence comes across as the show itself just not caring about Sasha and Marcy. We got to see how Anne's absence affected her parents, so ignoring the parents of the other two missing girls and not even bringing them up comes across as disingenuous to Sasha and Marcy's place in the story as a whole.

So yeah, I'm very glad the Journal actually brought this up. Some reason for not contacting the other girls' families is better than no reason.

Finished the book

and wow if that wasn't an emotional rollercoaster. I honestly don't know what to say. It was an amazing retelling of an amazing story while also holding it's own and bringing so much great new content to this world that we love. It delves deeper into how Marcy and Anne were feeling and fleshed out their characters even more. There were times when it made me laugh, and times when it made me cry(there were way more times when it made me cry). This was the perfect sendoff for a perfect story that I will cherish in my heart forever.

How do you feel about Anne's Entries in the Journal?

Alright just finished the book!

As for Anne's entries, I like them! Especially the 3a stuff added a lot of good characterization about Anne's mental state. Though, it feels like a lot of that should have been in the show itself.

I'm glad to have it. Its some nice closure on some nitpicks I have about season 3 that I've already gone to at length before so I won't belabor the point.

I do feel they could have done more with the 3b entries. Felt like it was mostly check marking the episode events rather than adding context to them.

Entry 86, Anne was talking about Sasha and Marcy's parents and she mentioned that Sasha's parents divorced when Sasha was 4 or 5, Mr Waybright remarried and Mrs Waybright has a long-term bf who already had kids.

We don't learn how many step-siblings she has on her mom's side or half-siblings from either so we fans can go nuts with Sasha's messed up family
