Night surveillance had only gotten worse in the days since the message had arrived. Even going into her overnight shift on a full eight hours of sleep, she felt exhausted, and the dim glow of the screens in the control room overnight didn’t help much, a constant reminder of days before when she’d received the message from mission control in here alone.

She’d barely been able to eat breakfast, when she’d been relieved at 08:00, and now that she was back into the control room to resume work as usual for the day, she kept finding that the had trouble focusing, now that she wasn’t rushing to calculate a way home.

The only saving grace was that Major Davies was there, instead of Semenova, her presence instantly making the room feel more welcoming and less hostile than if the Russian had been around to bother her.

     “Morning, Major,” she said, as she buckled herself into her seat, hoping that a little light conversation might take her mind off of things, help her ease into the pattern of the work day once again.
