Herbal Masterpost
Hey guys. Just wanted to make a little masterpost for herbs. I know some of you that follow me are just witchlings or you’re just now getting into the craft, so I hope this helps. This is gonna be kinda long, so prepare yourselves lol. First off, here are a list of basic herbs that you’re gonna want in your apothecary:
Mugwort
Sage
Bay leaves
Lavender
Rosemary
Cloves
Cinnamon
Thyme
Mint
Chamomile
Yarrow
These are some of the most common and widely used herbs in witchcraft, not in any specific order. I, myself, keep all of these but mint and mugwort on hand during all of my spells. There are so many different ways you can use herbs like these and it never hurts to know all of the options and techniques. Here, here, and here are some basic glossaries of herbalist terms, and the following are a few different types of preparations you can make with herbs:
Amulet - a charm designed to be work or carried on your person.
Anointing Oil - an oil blend, usually essential oils combined with a base oil that is rubbed on candles, charms, household items, or people. Usually the effect is based on aromatherapy - the scent of the oil is its energy.
Bath Sachet - a sort of tea bag for the bath.
Beauty Products - essential oils can be added to shampoo, liquid soap, conditioner, lotion, and all manners of personal care products. Not only does it smell great but also the oils will bring their influenced to you every time you shower. Just make sure to test the mixture on a small patch of skin 24 hours before using to avoid any possible allergic reactions.
Charm - a selection of herbs, talismans and stones blended together and bound up in a cloth and carried or placed in a strategic location. When the desired effect has been manifested, untie the charm and cast its contents into a river or the wind.
Decoction - 2 tsp. of <hard-seeds/pods/fruits/rootstock/stems> bruised then soaked in 8 oz of cold water for 30 minutes and brought to a low boil for 5 to 10 minutes. The herbs are stained before drinking and sweeter is added if desired. Decoctions are to be used within 72 hours or they will loose their potency.
Dream Pillow - A cloth pouch stuffed with herbs to bring good sleep, prophetic dreams or healing.
Floorwash - an infusion of herbs added to mop water or sprayer. Most often used to purify or banish unwanted influences from the home. Borrowed from our vodun cousins.
Incense - a blend of herbs that you burn. The combination may either be for magical intent, purification, or aromatherapy.
Poppet - a small cloth doll stuffed with herbs. Usually there is a link to the person it represents - a strand of hair, piece of clothing, a picture, etc. Used for healing and occasionally for banishing. (If I catch you sticking pins in a poppet I'll personally kick your butt - for bad taste if nothing else!)
Powder - finely ground herbs that can be sprinkled about the home, car, bed, workplace, etc. May be tossed into the air for a wish or rubbed onto a candle carved with runes among other uses.
Signature Powder - a blend of herbs and other substances that symbolizes you. It is a way of magically marking your territory. Add a pinch to charms incenses, etc. so that the results of your magic will find their way to you more easily. Sets a seal on your work.
Spell Bottle - A charm under glass. Spell bottles can be buried at the perimeter of your property to protect your home or left in plane sight as a curious and powerful nick-knack. Good for long term spells and protective magic.
Teas - herbs steeped in water. Boil the water before adding the tea as to preserve the herbal potency. Strain your herbs from the water and sweeten if desired. Honey is excellent as a sweetener.
Tincture - an infusion of herbs made in alcohol instead of water. These are often consumed, added to a bath, or used in anointing. Tinctures take several weeks to make and should be stored in the fridge.
You can make any of these using your chosen herbs. Moving on, correspondences are very significant in witchcraft. Each lunar cycle, star placement, raw and tumbled crystal, season, and day of the week has its own connection in the craft. Herbs are the same. Each herb has its own correspondences. I have compiled a small list that matches those with some of the more common herbs, or herbs that I at least have had work with. Here we go.

I have a personal list in my grimoire/BoS that adds on what parts of the herbs to use and how to use them to make them most effective in my spellwork. You take in the information that you need, and this list is minimal just to help y’all out a bit. You’re welcome to copy any information in this post for yourself. And if you need help building your own apothecary, message me. c: Thank y’all for reading. Here are some resources if you want to look a little further into the work of herbalism or know a little bit more about your craft. Enjoy~

A pinch of this resin in any incense will increase the incenses power. To quiet a noisy housepowder some dragons blood, mix it with sugar and salt, and place in a bottle. Cover this mixture tightly and secur eit within your house somewhere where it will not be disturbed and it is said you will have peace and quiet.
EUCALYPTUS: A herb I use a lot for healing. Also can be used for protection.
FRANKINCENSE TEARS: A rsin I use a lot in my workings both in it’s raw form and as an oil. Used for protection, exorcism, and spirituality. Also used in hoodoo to increase the magic of your candles or other workings by raising their energies that you have charged them with. Add this oil to another oil to increase it’s potency.
LAVENDER FLOWERS: Lavender has been used for protection, chastity, longevity, purification, and happiness. Great in a tea to help bring on sleep. Can be combined with Chamomile for this reason.
MUGWORT: Mugwort can be used as an incense, mixed in equal parts with Sandalwood, to aid in strengthening Psychic Powers. Another easy recipe for assisting with scrying, especially dealing with spirits, is mixing equal parts of Mugwort and Wormwood together although this version doesn’t smell as well as the Sandalwood. Other uses include strength, protection, prophetic dreams, and healing.
MYRRH: Myrrh is a wonderful herb to use in spells for spirituality, protection, healing, and exorcism. It is often combined with Frankincense to increase its power. Burn as an incense to purify an area. Use the smoke from the incense to purify and bless charms, amulets, talismans, magickal jewelry, tools, etc.
PEPPERMINT: Peppermint is use for purification, sleep, love, healing, and psychic powers. Fresh peppermint on the altar calls good spirits to you to assist you in your magic.

Place a bit of rosemary under your pillow to ensure a good night’s sleep. Wear rosemary to aid your memory especially when you are studying for an exam. Add an infusion of rosemary to your bathwater to perserve youthfulness and to purify you. Carry a bit of rosemary with you to remain healthy. Hang a sprig of rosemary above your door posts.

SANDALWOOD: Sandalwood has many magickal uses, including protection, spirituality, exorcism, healing, and wish fulfillment.Scatter sandalwood powder around your home to clear it of negativity. Tumblr media
If you haven’t been following American or Canadian news lately, you might have missed the terrifying mainstreaming of nazism and hatred that’s occurring in the US right now. Though racism, anti-Semitism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism and general hatred has always existed in very scary ways in the US, for the first time in my life those beliefs and actions have been publicly supported by the President of the US and the administration – in plain language. Hateful people wearing swastikas and carrying torches have been gathering in American and US cities and causing damage, injury, and even death. I’m frightened, angry, and disgusted with the complacency. This can’t happen. This certainly can’t happen AGAIN. Like an evangelical watching for signs of the rapture, many have been comparing these events to the events leading up to the Holocaust in World War II and predicting a similar outcome.
I can’t say I blame them.
The bystander effect is real. Internalized racism, sexism, homophobia all of that is REAL. Even white and privileged people who don’t consider themselves racist or hateful often unconsciously see people of colour and other marginalized people as other or less than. In the event that something should befall one of our brothers and sisters of colour, or that they are attacked, I honestly don’t have the faith in the average person to protect them.
If you have been paying attention I’m sure you share my fear and outrage. I’m sure you share my desire to do something. Showing up to counter protest isn’t possible for everyone, nor is it necessarily safe.
Tumblr media
RIP Heather Heyer
That being said, sitting at home and doing nothing is just not an option. No matter how much sheetcake you cry into.
That’s why, during the upcoming solar eclipse, I’ll be casting baneful magick at the Nazi hate groups and nazi sympathizers in the administration working so hard to normalize hate and kill those they do. If you want to get involved and help lend your energy to the spell you can find the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/848109488684970
Tumblr media
Find it at PlentifulEarth.com
In addition to baneful magick, a few online witch friends including Aurora Moone from Plentiful Earth created this incredible spell for protection, equality, and coexistence that they’ll be performing during today’s eclipse. To properly use the energy of this eclipse, I believe it would be most beneficial to have both Sun and Moon energy working together. While those who perform the Lady Liberty Spell (or any other that would be deemed “light” magick) will be casting love and light on those who are being hurt by hate, those of us casting the curse will be the dark and hidden energy of the moon. We’ll work with the shadow elements of this problem.
  The Night Witches
Tumblr media
The inspiration for this mass action and my spell comes from The Night Witches or Nachthexen, a Russian bomber squadron who carried out various, incredibly dangerous, attacks on nazis during World War II. They would idle their engines and quietly glide by the Nazis, making only the sound like a witch on her broomstick. This small regiment used training planes, wore hand me down uniforms, decorated their planes with flowers, and were often disrespected by other soldiers and officers. They were so feared by the Nazis that any successful attack of one lead to an instant Iron Cross. This Monday we’ll be calling on the strength of these brave soldiers who made incredible strides in the war and struck supernatural fear into the hearts of Nazis.
If it’s something you do in your practice, maybe try to call on the spirits of some of the Night Witches and ask them to lend their strength and determination to the working. Here is a profile of one of the most famous from the Regiment, Nadezhda (Nadia) Popova, upon her death in 2013.
The Curse
So here’s the thing – I don’t like telling you witches exactly what to do. Everyone practices magick differently, everyone has their own style, own ingredients, own prayers and spirits and deities. I can’t possibly write a single spell that will work for everyone. Not only that, but I don’t think it’s necessary for all of us to do identical magick to be working toward a common goal. I think as long as we all have similar intentions, our magick will work together. We’re all connected. The one thing I will hammer out in plain detail here are my intentions with this spell I am performing. Otherwise, this is just an overview of what I’m doing and what I’m working with, along with some ideas you can use. If you have all of the things I mention here, please feel free to use the spell!
The Stuff: I want to be clear, you don’t need ANY stuff to do a spell. You can just focus your intention and do some visualization. It’s up to you. I like stuff. I’m doing a candle spell using oils, incense, and some live herbs/plants I grew myself.
Black Candle
Coffin Nails/Candle Carving tool
Anointing oil – I’m using Dragon Medicine oil from Beaux Magique. Not only do ancient legends about the eclipse often equate the sight with a dragon coming to devour the sun, but this oil is used for change, consciousness, recognizing danger, dispelling darkness, and destroying the old to make way for the new. Perfect. You could also use something like black pepper oil, a van van or anything else that spells DISASTER.
Baneful herbs and plants with which to dress your candle – my ingredients here will be a bit unique. I am using a large pitcher from my Nepenthes plant, and a morning glory vine. I’ll probably also go outside and pick some nightshade flowers. You could use black pepper, tobacco, cloves, rue, or anything else that seems to work for banishing, destroying, poisoning, ruining, or cursing. Think aggressive. Grab some thorns or thistles, or cactus spikes.
Incenses and Powders – again to dress your candle or burn on your altar. I’m using dragon’s blood resin, you could also use cemetery dirt, palo santo, clove, banishing incense, Hekate incense, or make your own!
Paper and a pen
Lighter/matches
Since I’m using one of my pitchers (the most beautiful one, ugh, I’ll miss it) from my Nepenthes plant, a lot of my spell focuses on narrowing the influence of Donald Trump, Neo-Nazis, Breitbart news, etc to that of a tiny fly. From there I’ll be writing their names, and the name of other hate groups and movements and ideals, rolling them into small balls, and putting them inside the Nepenthes, trapping their disgusting ideals from damaging others, while being surrounded and trapped in the sticky trap of hate they’ve created for themselves. Finally they’ll be eaten alive by their hate, wither and die, and leave the world a better and more fulfilled place. The rest of us will feed off of their destruction and grow, just like these carnivorous plants.
The Intentions:
Narrow the influence of donald trump, and all hate groups who draw strength from his presidency, to that of a single, tiny, fly. Contain their hatred so it can’t affect others, either negatively or positively.
Bind them with their own hate. Return all hateful words and actions back at them, and allow that hatred to consume them.
Cause them to weaken and wither the further into their hate they delve.
Bind them from reaching out to anyone. Keep them alone, separate, powerless. Let them know they don’t belong in our society. Make their views unacceptable. Take away their sense of community and leave them alone with their pestilent hatred.
Bring to light the secrets of their hate, and allow those who support hate to see it for what it really is.
Make way for a new era free of hatred and bigotry. Create space for a new administration, a new standard of tolerance, acceptance, and respect for all, and new legally granted rights and freedoms for the oppressed.
The Method:
Carve and dress the candle. You can carve symbols, names, word or phrases. Focusing on trapping and binding hatred in one place. Anoint the candle from the top to the bottom with the dragon medicine oil. Imagine a dragon coming down and wrapping itself around the candle, bringing with it all of the hatred it’s found in the world. Dress it with herbs, powders, or resins. Make sure there is water at the bottom of the Pitcher, if not spritz and water the plant and wait a bit. Select the largest and most sturdy pitcher and harvest it. Place your candle into the opening of the pitcher, leaving space around to add things. Write down the names of hateful people, systems and ideals on small pieces of paper, focusing on them as you do. Ball them up and trap them inside the pitcher, like insignificant flies. You can also add baneful hers or magical ingredients for extra poison here. When finished, wrap the morning glory tight around the pitcher to close it, focus on your intentions, and light the candle when the eclipse is at its peak and the moon and sun’s energy are working in tandem. Allow the candle to burn down into the Nepenthes (watch for fire) and when it’s done wrap it in a paper bag, and bring it to a sight that perpetuates this hatred. A rally, a statue, a landmark, a political building, etc and leave it there as a message that hatred will not stand in our world and our society as long as we have any say in it.
I know this is incredibly specific, but if you want to do this spell without the Nepenthes, why not use a mason jar with water and a sticky substance that attracts insects? Then add a lid and maybe some pieces of morning glory and other baneful herbs. Throw in the balled up papers, or even photographs and pictures from the news paper. What I’m doing is essentially a candle spell that creates a witch bottle, but my bottle is a leaf. You could also use the candle on its own and use moth and flame imagery instead. For a more classic curse written by a really powerful witch, consider using this one, written by Melanie Hexen to Hex Brock Turner during a mass hex last year. Add in anything you have that lends energy, crystals like onyx and jet and obsidian; tarot cards like the tower, judgement, strength, and death; a broom with which to cleanse them from this earth, whatever feels right.
My facebook event starts at 2pm EDT because that’s when I’ll start creating my items, and around 2:37 the eclipse will reach its peak and I’ll light the candle. Feel free to participate anytime the eclipse is visible, or even later at night during the new moon. The new moon and the eclipse are linked in energy and this strong energy regarding change will be here for a while. Like any other magick, it’s really the thought and intention that counts. If you can’t cast a full spell because you’re working or busy, maybe just take a minute during the eclipse to focus on either some fo my intentions, or the ones outlined in the Lady Liberty Spell. Everyone’s magick is welcome, and needed at this time.
Flight of the Night Witches – Anti-Nazi Mass Action If you haven't been following American or Canadian news lately, you might have missed the terrifying mainstreaming of nazism and hatred that's occurring in the US right now.

If you’ve looked at prices of witchy supplies recently, you’ll be heartbroken. For those like me, who are on a tight budget, keeping your magickal goodies stocked can be a daunting, dreadful task. Thankfully, there are ways to make stocking up a little easier.
The dollar store will be your best friend, believe me. There are actually quite a few items that you can find at dollar and discount stores so you can save butt loads. Here is a little list of some great dollar store steals:
Candles: Candles from the dollar store are cheap and come in  many varieties; tea candles, jar candles, pillar candles. They come in many scents and colours, but the white unscented are probably the best. You can use this for any purpose, and are great for anointing and carving.
Bowls, Wine Glasses, and Trays: You can use bowls, trays, and dishes on your altar for offerings, salt, water, and oils. Just about all dollar stores carry plastic tupperware, and there are a good handful that carry ceramic and glass bowls, cups, and dishes. Wine glasses make for great chalices. I think a plain wine glass is more elegant than some of the overly fancy pewter chalices. If you decide you’d like to dress it up, you can use paint (on the outside!), tie charms and ribbons on the stem, or glue shells and charms on the base.
Incense: I’m not really fond of the dollar store incense, but if you are really itching for some incense and money is tight, it works. A few of the discount stores do carry decent yet cheap incense. If you are burning outdoors, this is definitely a steal. If you will be burning the incense indoors, you may want to go ahead and spend the extra penny on something better.
Glass Jar: Glass jars are essential if you are participating in herbalism. You can never have too many glass jars, which are ideal for brews, herbs, and salves. Plastic breaks down over time and can end up contaminating whatever it is holding.
Herbs, Spices, and Salt: The spice section is a great place to pick up bulk herbs for cheap. Although it can be quite limited and only carries common spices, it is still a steal. Things like basil, chilli powder, bay leaves, and garlic are all used in magick and can be pricey when buying from metaphysical shops. Most dollar stores carry sea salt, and it can be either coarse or finely ground, but it’s usually in bulk form. If you use salt for circle casting, dollar store salt is the way to go.
Seasonal Decor: Before the cross quarter holidays, you should take a trip to the dollar store to pick up some deals on the seasonal decorations.
Besides the dollar store, another good way to save money on magickal supplies is to buy in bulk. Buying in bulk is the best way to purchase herbs, in my opinion. You can purchase herbs in bulk from most stores. Although places like Mountain Rose Herbs is a great place to get herbs, oils, and resins. You can purchase candles, especially tea lights, and incense in bulk from online shops and mainstream retailers, like eBay and Walmart. There are usually great deals on packs of tea lights and small pillars. There are generic brands of incense at Walmart and are usually $1 for a pack of 40. The selection of incense isn’t great, but most stores will carry the most common scents like Myrrh, Frankincense, Nag Champa, and Dragon’s Blood.
Another great way to save money on supplies is to Craft Your Own Tools. Most tools and witchy supplies are easily craftable or can be conveniently found in nature. If you like to change up your altar with the wheel of the year, you can use things you have found in nature during that season. Pine cones for fall, flowers for spring, etc. I also have several Pagan related crafts saved to a Pagan Crafts board on Pinterest that I have found useful.
If you are in need of a book, Amazon is the place to go. Amazon always has good books and ebooks for a very reasonable price. And if you sign up for Amazon Prime, you can get a bigger discount, and many ebooks then become free. Amazon is also a good place for tarot cards, figures/statues, and other witchy supplies.

Ostara Incense Recipe: Magickal Herbalism Like you Really Mean It
March 5, 2017 by Heron Michell
FOUNF IN , PATHEOS PAGAN.COM/WITCH ON FIRE
This Ostara Sabbat, consider preparing your own herbal incense blend.  Magickal herbalism can be very rewarding to the Modern Witch.
It isn’t for the feint of wallet and does take the extra time of tracking down, or growing, the ingredients. Yet, there is nothing witchier than drying, storing, and labeling all the little jars neatly in a row on your shelf.
Once you’ve committed this much energy and cash to the practice of magickal herbalism, you wouldn’t want to just chuck these precious plant allies into a bowl and hope for the best; that is sloppy and ineffective.
Be the uber-witch: ritualistic, creative and empowered!  Why not dig in and truly engage in everything you do?
Seize the day with both hands, both sides of your brain and all 7 chakras and know you’ve affected change in the world.
Magick is only as potent as what you mentally and spiritually invest into it and the frame of mind with which you use your herbal creations.
Here are a few ideas for preparation with intention.  I will use the example of an Ostara Incense blend I’ve been working on this season.
Magickal Herbalism Like you Really Mean it
Creating your own Incense Recipes:
I like to experiment in creating my own recipes with ingredients whose magickal correspondences are appropriate to the season or goal.
I pay attention to the elemental, planetary and gender correspondences, and choose according to what I think will smell nice together, but also those that evoke the season/purpose to me, where I live.
For example, when I think of spring, I think of flowers, fresh purifying rains and bright sunbeams, so I go for the lighter, more floral, more sunny choices.
There are many great reference books out there for the correspondences, but my favorite is Scott Cunningham’s Complete book of Incense, Oils and Brews.   This on-line resource, Herbal Riot, is great! I also try to be mindful of the sustainable sources of my ingredients. Some materials are being over-harvested, like sandalwood, so I’m using it less these days.
My preferred ratio: 1:1:1
1 Part Wood Powders, like Cinnamon Bark, Sandalwood, Oak, Pine, Cedar, Birch, Willow.
1 Part Resin Powders, like Benzoin, Copal, Dragons Blood, Frankincense, Myrrh
1 Part herbs and other dried botanicals, like flowers, leaves, roots, berries, peels, etc.
If I have them, I’ll add a few drops each of essential oils.
I like to add some stone chips to my incense blends to continuously amplify and charge them.
They don’t burn, but they don’t impede burning, either.
Stones from the quartz family are especially good for this. A few teaspoons of vegetable glycerine – enough to dampen and bind the blend, while not becoming too wet.
Add slowly and stir well
Caution:
Many herbs used for magick are poisonous if inhaled, consumed or sometimes even touched with the bare hands.
Understand the properties of an ingredient before you begin your work. Even something as tasty and innocuous as nutmeg, can cause respiratory difficulties and asthma attacks if too much is inhaled.
Do your research.
It is also a good idea to use equipment and tools dedicated to magickal work that are never used for food preparation.
A cautious kitchen witch lives to see their work manifested.
I have a dedicated coffee bean grinder for grinding tough ingredients like roots, barks and peals, but I just purchase them pre-powdered if I can.
Ostara Incense
1 T. Powdered White Oak Bark: Jupiter/Mars, Water, God (Oak King) Protection, Health, Money, Potency, Fertility, Luck 1 T. Copal Resin: Sun, Fire, God, Love, Purification 1 t. dried, finely ground Rose petals: Venus, Water, Maiden Goddess, love
1 t. dried, finely ground Jasmine blossoms: Moon, Water, Goddess, Love, Money, Sensuality, Sexuality, Spring Equinox 2 t. dried, powdered Orange peel (zest): Sun, Fire, God, Joy, Energy, purification.
3 drops each of Sweet Orange and Jasmine Essential Oil, if you have them.
Rose Essential Oil is prohibitively expensive, and arguably wasteful, considering how many blossoms it takes to produce a single drop of EO, but should you happen to have the real thing, a single drop would be transcendent.
1 tsp. Vegetable glycerine stirred in well and fluffed with a fork.
**Never use synthetic fragrance oils in magickal herbalism–they are a chemical cocktail of lies, and will not elicit the aid of the plant spirit as your magick intends.**
Store your blend in small glass jar that seals tightly, and preferably of a darker color, shielding the blend from sunlight.
A jar opening larger than a small spoon is helpful, so you can easily scoop it out, and clean it later.  I like 4 oz mason jar.
Set the stage for your work.
Dedicate a stretch of counter-space or a table top.
Nothing fancy is required, just some functional place near your herb cabinet that is orderly, clean and gives you a sense of purpose.
Consider using only natural materials such as wood, metal, glass or earthenware to prepare and store your herbal blends.  This need not be your altar, but a candle sets the mood and opens the space for spiritual business.
White is almost always appropriate, or use color correspondence to deepen the symbolism.
For Ostara Work, I like to utilize the colors orange and yellow, for candle, table cloth or storage jar.
Orange and yellow are corresponding colors to fertility, the Will, the maiden goddess and youth/solar god aspects.
If you choose to utilize color in your work, make sure you select one that means “Ostara” to you.
Regardless of what a table of correspondences says, if it does not trigger your sub-conscious mind, you’ve wasted your time.
Statement of Intent:
Ground and center yourself. Begin with a simple prayer for aid or a statement of intent:
“Great Ones! Guide my work for the highest good of all, harming none. So mote it be!”
Or perhaps, something more poetic inspires you:
“By wind and rain and spark and wood, guide me toward my highest good, harming none.  So mote it be!”
Grinding and Blending:
Into your mortar and pestle, add each ingredient by name, starting first with large or chunkier ones that need the most grinding. Do so with reverence and a touch of drama.  State out loud the name and attribute, such as:  “Pine wood for Healing! Dragon’s Blood for protection!”  Know WHY you are including each ingredient.
Focus on its intent as you grind in a circular movement. Remember, in the Northern Hemisphere, deosil (clockwise) builds and creates while widdershins (counter clockwise)  tears down and banishes.
I tend to add ingredients in this order:
Resins, woods/roots/tough botanicals, then the leafy and soft dried botanicals.
Lastly, add the drops of essential oils and vegetable glycerine, stirring well and fluffing with a fork.
a few Stone chips–thanks to the law of contagion, it doesn’t take many.
Blending with Power:
Perhaps a silver spoon or a long quartz crystal can be a dedicated tool for this purpose.
While stirring, put your numerology and symbolism knowledge to work.
Take a stroke each for the maiden, mother and crone, or thirteen strokes for the thirteen moons in the year.
Carve pentacles or runes into the ingredients.   Any symbol is game if it means something appropriate to you: Happy faces or dollar signs, four-leaf clovers or runes.   You can be chanting your spell as you mix, rhyming adds to the power and witchyness exponentially.
When finished, tap the spoon on the edge of the bowl with authority and state, “It is done!”
Transfer the blend into the storage container, which can also be inscribed with runes or symbols. However, leave the lid off so that the mixture can settle and dry for up to 6 hours before you burn over coals or close for long-term storage.
Breath deeply and hold the jar between your hands, shifting your consciousness into the herbs.
Visualize them aligning, resonating as one like notes in a chord whose note is “rebirth.”
For our example of the Ostara blend, see yourself glowing with orange/yellow light and full of vitality and budding potential–the seed germinating in the fires of Aries. There should be a wild, teenager-y impetuous and fearless vibe, where all things are possible.
Build your energy from your feet up to the crown of your head and then release it from the palms of your hands into the herbs.  See  the light transferring to the jar.
Feel your emotions and intentions soaking the herbs.
State aloud what you intend,
“By Lord and Lady, earth and sky, I charge you to…”
Elaborate in whatever poetic or specific way you’d like.
End with  “So mote it be” and accept that the work is complete and good.
Shake your hands to stop the flow of energy.  Relax, snuff your candle and clean up.
Burning your Incense:
In a charcoal incense burner, or in a heat-dafe dish on a thick layer of sand, light a charcoal tab (the kind usually sold for hooka pipes), and carefully set it on the sand.
After the sparks have completely passed over the tab, spoon your loose incense blend onto the coal in 1/2 teaspoon increments.
With spoon, you can kick the ash off and add more incense as you desire. How does it smell?
Allow the smoke to waft over you, and around the room and pay close attention to the shifts in energies in the space. From there, adjust as you see fit.
Ostara Blessings! ~Heron

Beltane – The May Sabbat
May is the time of fertility and new beginnings after a long winter. The Faeries are afoot! They dance in the hills and roll in the grass, reveling in the joy of warm May breezes. Our spirits are high with the lust and heartiness of spring. New life is stirring and appetites are keen. –Laurie Cabot, Celebrate the Earth
In Celtic tradition, the two greatest festivals of the solar year are Samhain and Beltane, celebrations of death and rebirth, respectively. Love is in the air at Beltane. In our rituals, we celebrate the union between the Great Mother and her young Horned God. Their coupling brings fresh new life on Earth. Some form of this Great Rite is enacted on this sabbat in nearly every modern pagan circle. The Great Rite symbolizes the sacred marriage, or sexual union, of the the Lord and Lady. Often the rite is performed symbolically by a male and female who place a knife (a phallic symbol) into a chalice (a female or yonic symbol). In Old Europe, whole villages would celebrate May Day by slipping away into the woods for indiscriminate sexual encounters. Any children conceived during this occasion were known as “merry-begots” and were considered children of the gods. These “greenwood marriages” were acts of sympathetic magick believed to have a positive effect on their crops, animals, and themselves. (In this age of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, however, we must exercise responsibility — by means of safe sex, monogamy, or even abstinence. Use your better judgment.)
Crop fertility was a strong theme at this sabbat. Besoms were ridden hobbyhorse-style through fields by women in symbolic fertility rites. Menstruating women ran and danced naked in the newly-sown fields. Cows were led to the fields to calve, and ritually consecrated chalices of sheep’s blood and milk were poured on the crops, as were ashes from the balefire.
The Altar
Drape the altar in a green cloth and decorate it with blooming flowers and herbs.
Herbs
All-heal, blessed thistle, broom, curry, daffodil, dogwood, coriander, dragon’s blood reed, fern, fireweed, nettle, flaxseed, hawthorn, marjoram, paprika, radish, rue, snapdragon, mushroom, almond, meadowsweet, rose, woodruff, tansy, elder leaves.
Incense
Rose, jasmine, ylang, ylang, peach, musk, or vanilla.
Stones
Malachite, garnet, rose quartz, emerald, beryl, tourmaline.
Activities Jump the balefire. The bonfire, or need-fire, is one of the oldest Beltane traditions. When lighting the fire, use nine sacred woods from the following list:
oak, apple, hawthorn, birch, elder, ash, blackthorn, grape vine, mountain ash (rowan), holly, willow, cedar, yew, and hemlock.
Ashes from the balefire can be scattered in the fields as a fertility charm. Women wishing to conceive can tie a bag of the ashes around their necks. Traditionally, cattle and other animals were driven between two fires for protection, healing, and purification. Modern pagans can ritually purify tools or other things in the balefire. Jump the dying embers of the fire for summer blessings.
Dance around the maypole.
Gather the first wild herbs of the season.
Go a-Mayin’ by going to the woods and fields to gather flowers. Take a picnic.
Wash your face in dew at sunrise on Beltane for beauty in the coming year. (Traditionally the dew from the hawthorn tree, but dew from grass and flowers will do.) Make daisy chains and fresh flower wreaths and chaplets (head dresses) to wear and to place atop the maypole. Braid flowers in your hair. Make and wear leafy green masks to represent the Green Man who has returned.
Make a wish at the hawthorn tree, a tree associated with faeries. Place strips of cloth symbolizing your wish in the tree (the color should be appropriate to the nature of your wish, i.e. blue for health, pink or red for love, green or gold for prosperity). Take some time to attune to the tree. When you feel you have contacted its spirit, visualize your wish coming true as you hook the cloth on one of the tree’s thorns, chanting your wish. When you have finished, leave a gift for the tree.
Make love in the woods. Beltane is the time of year when the Goddess and God consummate their passions. Traditionally it is a time when lovers pledge to live together for a year and a day. At the end of the period, they may part ways if things haven’t worked out. If all has gone well, they may make plans for a handfasting at Midsummer.
Commune with the faeries.
Mark the boundaries of your circle with oatmeal, a traditional Beltane grain.
Food Oatmeal and dairy products. Begin the day with a hearty bowl of Irish oatmeal topped with cream and brown sugar or country butter. Oatmeal brings good fortune and encourages the power and magick of the faeries. We always have warm oatmeal cookies and vanilla ice cream as a Beltane treat.
Farls (Oat Cakes)
3 cups real mashed potatoes 2 cups dry oats 2 Tablespoons margarine or butter 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/8 teaspoon salt Pinch pepper Pinch rosemary
Soak oats in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes until soft and slightly swollen. Mix them with other ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Knead until mixture is like a thick dough. If it seems too thin or moist, add a teaspoon or two of flour. When thoroughly mixed, form small sections into small patties. Fry in hot vegetable oil in a small skillet until lightly browned. Serve immediately.
May Wine from “Dancing with the Sun” by Jasmine Yalenorn
1 cup sweet woodruff 2 bottles rose’ wine 4 dozen rose petal ice cubes 1 quart strawberries 1 quart chopped peaches 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup white rum 2 bottles champagne 1 bottle white wine 1 liter lemon-lime soda
Two weeks before serving: clean woodruff and pack into one bottle of wine. Cork and let sit. The day before serving: make four dozen ice cubes by placing rose petals in the compartments before adding water. Freeze until solid. Hull and wash the strawberries. Slice. Mix peaches and strawberries. Add sugar and rum. Marinate overnight. An hour before serving: Strain woodruff out of wine and discard leaves. Mix champagne, all remaining wine, lemon-lime soda, and fruit in a large bowl. Stir. Add ice cubes 15 minutes before serving. Serves 20.
