Do you have any writings abt sex and death, and how they're connected? Thanks if you decide to answer!
hiiiii yes♡
first and foremost is Bataille’s Erotism: Death and Sensuality which is expressly about this. everywhere you turn while researching this subject, Bataille will be mentioned. inclusive of this is a foray into religious eroticism/divine love/mysticism and elements of dissolution/continuity, violation and violence, aberration, so on... "There is no better way to know death than to link it with some licentious image." (pdf)
also v central are Freud’s theories surrounding our competing Eros/Thanatos drives, in which (as a very reductive summation) “the death instinct pervades sexual activity”; Freud also touches on dissolution, displacement and 'higher order/form'—you can see here one of the many ways Freud influenced Bataille's theories/writings. ultimately we might agree that the drives, rather than competing, are irreparably intertwined. "Life is displaced death, and death is displaced life." -> I like this article about them, but the source material is his Beyond the Pleasure Principle (pdf) +if you're interested in this, you could further research in sexology, sexual ethics and phenomenology as regarding sexualities linked to death, namely necrophilia, lust murder/sexual homicide, asphyxiophilia (sexual arousal by oxygen deprivation/erotic asphyxiation) and autassassinophilia (sexual arousal from the idea/risk of legitimately—imperatively, not in a fantasy-sense—being killed)
speaking of necrophilia (from Howard Barker’s afterword for Eroticism and Death in Theatre and Performance):
Tumblr media
the last two sentences accordant with the modern usage of la petite mort in which the sensation of orgasm is likened to death. literature which comes to mind: M.G. Lewis’ The Monk*, Gabrielle Wittkop’s Le Necrophile, Angela Carter’s “The Snow Child” and “The Lady of the House of Love” as published in The Bloody Chamber, Poppy Z. Brite’s Exquisite Corpse, some of Baudelaire’s poetry...
then getting into more periphery stuff, there’s a lot of theory on the corpse and its sexuality (touched on above) + fetishisation. some theories have to do with executions, others with the sexual aspects of ritual sacrifice, as below in Death Comes To The Maiden: Sex and Execution 1431-1933 by Camille Naish:
Tumblr media
more on the former in Julia Kristeva’s The Severed Head: Capital Visions and Nicole Loraux’s Tragic Ways of Killing a Woman
also the eroticisation of the medical venus—for this i heartily recommend Joanna Ebenstein’s The Anatomical Venus which is an absolutely fucking stunning artwork of a book to caress and coo over and cradle as you would a baby and which has a chapter dedicated to ‘Ecstasy, Fetishism and Doll Worship’ that delves into this (and religious eroticism, ne'er shall these subjects be pried apart for individual study it seems, not that i’m complaining)
Tumblr media
+supplementary readings into our corpse-like beauty standards, with the heroin chic of the 90s (which has perhaps insidiously returned?) but esp in terms of the consumptive beauty ideals of the fin de siècle x, x etc etc. pervasive and perverted when beauty—an engine of evolution/a vehicle for sexual selection—becomes dictated by icons of illness
other haphazard things which come to mind: Camille Paglia’s Sexual Personae (tw for terf rhetoric); Angela Carter’s Sadeian Woman; cause-and-effect death by sex horror trope/generic imperative of post Halloween/‘78 slasher film; death and the maiden trope ofc which is often highly sexualised
*there is a v good essay on this called “Between Life and Death: Representing Necrophilia, Medicine, and the Figure of the Intercessor in M.G. Lewis's The Monk” by Laura Miller

Booker T. Jones was the keyboard player for the house band of Stax Records with Al Jackson on drums, Lewie Steinberg on bass, and Steve Cropper on guitar.
The sequence of chords in Green Onions is F, B flat, and C. The chip, or the little thing you hear between the main chords, is played on the third fret of the second and third strings. It's an unusual note sequence that might surprise you at first, but it blends perfectly with the overall sound.

15. Biggest artist pet peeve? When people don't draw fingernails and teeth, also unrealistic hot-air balloon breasts lmao
20. What works have you drawn fanart of? Haven't drawn fanart in a decade, but it was a pretty rare thing back then as well. Only evidence I could find is the following Alien 3 and The Monk (M.G. Lewis) pieces from 2013-2015 I was planning on making several illustrations for the latter but soon gave up lol I'm sure I also drew some Madhuri Dixit studies at some point but I can't find them anymore.

Rewind: Booker T. & the M.G.’s - Green Onions (Oct. 1, 1962)
If the definition of timeless is sounding simultaneously older than it is and yet ultra-modern, then Green Onions is timeless.
Booker T. & the M.G.’s - namesake organist Jones, guitarist Steve Crooper and the rhythm section of bassist Lewie Steinberg and drummer Al Jackson Jr. - released their debut LP Oct. 1, 1962, and 60 years and one day later, on Oct. 2, 2022, Green Onions remains just as crisp and refreshing as ever while retaining the innocence of the 1950s music that inspired it.
There’s nothing fancy here, just 12 instrumentals - both originals and covers - running 35 minutes and held together by the common thematic imagery of the ubiquitous opening title track, “Mo’ Onions” and the album-closing “Comin’ Home Baby,” originally recorded by the Dave Bailey Quintet.
As soloists, neither Jones nor Cropper showboats; each instrumentalist simply lays it down, carving deep grooves into the pocketed rhythm section. The closest either comes to rowdiness is on their respective staccato spotlights on the 12-bar interpretation of Ray Charles’ “Lonely Avenue.”
More typical is Jones’ mournful quaver on Acker Bilk’s “Stranger on the Shore” or Jones and Cropper’s subdued playfulness on their sock-hop reworking on “Twist and Shout.”
For all the masterful writing and arranging, Booker T. & the M.G.’s didn’t bother to fashion endings to their tracks, letting them fade away as the band cooks and leaving listeners to wonder what kind of lost notes remain in old tape cases in the Stax archives.
Grade card: Booker T. & the M.G.’s - Green Onions - A

Hello hawk. Do you get inspiration for your writing from books (actual "books", not fanfiction lol)? If so, what authors do you like? Hugs~
Hello. Tbh I’m kinda picky with books, not as much as with fanfiction lol but still I can’t enjoy some popular books ppl love. I don’t like long sagas for example, I get bored with fantasy in general and I dislike very wordy books with looong descriptions of the smallest details of the characters’ clothes and food. I couldn’t read the A Song Of Ice And Fire books because of this.
I do like a wordy writer like Charles Dickens though. Not all his books cause some are really too victorian bordering on annoying, but I really liked A Tale of Two Cities and Our Mutual Friend. I read a lot of classics tbh especially as a teenager, as I discovered fandoms and fanfics later. I liked Jane Austen, she has a brilliant style, very ironic and not cheesy despite the sentimental theme. I also liked old gothic novels, they have some dark imagery, like Maturin’s Melmoth The Wanderer, Byron’s Manfred, M.G. Lewis’ The Monk. It was my final essay in school, even. All these novels would be ‘wrong’ by fandom bullshit moralism btw.
But that was my teenage literature phase, I think fondly of those books because of nostalgia, mostly, because I changed my taste for less plot oriented and more philosophical, abstract, surreal books. I also like short stories or short novels more than long stuff. The surreal and the fantastic work better with short stories imo.
A writer I liked as a teenager and like even now though is H. Hesse. He created a beautiful atmosphere in his books, like, you can literally feel the sun and trees and birds chirping, an at the same time they’re angsty. Especially Narcissus and Goldmund; I reread it recently and it’s even better than I remembered, it also had a strong gay vibe which doesn’t hurt lol. Or Demian, male friendship, kinda gay, very philosophical, and The Glass Bead Game and his short stories too. Also he was vegetarian, it’s a plus for me.
My favourite writer is J. L. Borges, I love how he creates fictional reviews of nonexistent books that he mixes with existent philosophers and writers, so when you read his short stories you are juggling between reality and fiction, reading fake academic works or you’re sinking in a story with a thin but amazing plot line where dream and reality are fused together, and reality is completely subjective. His concept of time is not linear, he’s from Argentina and he describes this amazing mix of cultures and influences, everything he writes is a masterpiece that you can feel it, elevates your mind. Genius. Especially The Lottery in Babylon (for me it’s also a metaphor of reincarnation) Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius , The Garden of Forking Paths (amazing, simply amazing) Funes the Memorious (this story and its theme is still haunting me tbh) and The Circular Ruins, I have no words to describe how much I love it.
I also love two Italian writers very much. I. Calvino, surreal, abstract, amazing. I highly recommend him to everyone cause he has been translated a lot in English speaking countries, like Invisible Cities,  The Castle of Crossed Destinies (tarot lovers would like this one),  If on a winter's night a traveler (all book lovers should read it).
D. Buzzati is amazing too, his short stories might be set in urban Italy but also in a nonspecified ancient Central Asia-ish spaces, with its vastity and mysterious (for us) culture, from Samarkand to the steppes. His writing is laconic, essential, but shows you everything you need to see and feel. His novel The Tartar Steppe is poetic and metaphoric, his short stories often deal with the mystery of death, in the same poetic metaphoric way. Unfortunately I didn’t find anything in English online, but I really recommend The Seven Messengers, it was the first story I read from him and still a favourite.
I also like M. Bulgakov very much, like Master and Margarita is such a cool book and so is Heart of a Dog. So much sarcasm, I love them.
I was too long maybe, recommending books. You asked if these books I love influenced my writing, I wish they did lol. As I write dark themes but I stopped reading that darkish stuff I can’t say they influenced me much. Anyway my writing style is quite essential and to the point, not only because English is not my mothertongue but also because of the writers I like.
I was slightly inspired by Borges’ The Circular Ruins for In Dreams, not directly but for certain themes related to subjective reality, and I quoted The Garden of the Forking Paths for Itachi’s pre-massacre state of mind in Victims of Peace.
I was slightly inspired by Hesse’s Narcissus and Goldmund for the setting (Northern European late Middle Ages) of a non-Naruto darkfic I wrote.
I think there might be more but I’m probably not aware of it.

horror movie heroes issue
When it came time to assemble this volume, there were plenty of obvious choices. You can’t put out a book called Horror Movie Heroes without including guys like David Cronenberg and Guillermo del Toro, for instance, so you’ll find in-depth interviews with both filmmakers In these pages. We've taken a multi-generational approach, too, which means you'll hear from trailblazers such as M.G. Lewis and Tobe Hooper, as well as relatively newer blood like Larry Fessenden and James Wan. Horror is a wonderfully multicultural affair, as well, so Japanese body-horror pioneer Shinya Tsukamoto shares the spotlight here with Spanish auteur Jaume Balaguerd and Chilean surrealist Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Alongside the 199 year anniversary of the death of Percy Shelley, this week also see the birth of other notable instances of 18th and 19th century Gothic horror 9th July 1764, birth of English author and pioneer of the Gothic Novel Ann Radcliffe. Best known for the work ‘The Mysteries of Udolpho’ published in 1794, and cited as the archetypal Gothic Novel. Radcliffe’s technique of matching supernatural and psychological terror, alongside vivid descriptions of travelling within gothic landscapes, propelled the Gothic novel into respectability in the 1790s. 9th July 1775, birth of English novelist and dramatist Matthew Gregory Lewis, known as M.G. Lewis, and often referred to as "Monk" Lewis, due to the success of his gothic novel, ‘The Monk: A Romance’ published in 1796. The scandal and controversy of the novel's themes of perceived blasphemy, violence, immorality and supernaturalism; resulted in harsh critiques of Lewis being a ‘reckless defiler of the public mind’, and devoting the ‘fruits of his mind to the propagation of evil’. Despite these criticisms the novel was very highly successful, absorbed by an 18th century reading public eager to be terrified and scandalized by the new gothic fictional form. 10th July 1792, birth of Captain Frederick Marryat; British Royal Navy officer, friend of Charles Dickens and author of the gothic novel ‘ The Phantom Ship’. Marryat is also credited as an early pioneer of the sea story. The Phantom Ship tells the story of the legend of the ghost ship the Flying Dutchman, and its Captain doomed to sail for eternity, and the quest of the Captain’s son who pursues his father in order to save his soul, (continued in the comments) #gothicliterature #gothicliteratureart #gothicstyle #gothicbooks #gothicbookshelf #percybyssheshelley #gothicnovel #gothicnovels #annradcliffe #themysteriesofudolpho #supernaturalnovel #18thcentury #18thcenturyhistory #georgiangothic #georgian #gothiclandscapes #matthewgregorylewis #gothicfiction #gothicfictionbooks #classicliterarure #classiclit #pageturners #captainfrederickmarryat #phantomship #gothichistory #theflyingdutchman #phantasmagoria #gothicart #gothictales #ghoststory https://www.instagram.com/p/CRHLpsElJdm/?utm_medium=tumblr

Descent Into Sadness
Excerpt from The Monk (M.G. Lewis)
“Man was born for society. However little he may be attached to the world, he can never wholly forget it or bear to be forgotten by it. Disgusted at the guilt or absurdity of mankind, the misanthrope flies from it: he resolved to become a hermit, and buries himself in the cavern of some gloomy rock. While hate inflames his bosom, possibly, he may feel contented with the situation: but when his passions begin to cool; when time has mellowed his sorrows, and healed those wounds which bore with him to his solitude, think you that content becomes his companion? Ah! No, Rosario. No longer sustained by the violence of his passions, he feels all the monotony of his way of living, and his heart becomes the prey of Ennui and weariness. He looks around, and finds himself alone in the universe. The love of society revives in his bosom, and he pants to the world which he has abandoned. Nature loses all her charms in his eyes, no one is near him to point out her beauties or share in his admiration of her excellence and variety. Propped upon the fragment of some rock, he gazed upon the tumbling waterfall with a vacant eye, he views without emotion the glory of the setting sun. Slowly, he returns to his cell at evening, for no-one there is anxious for his arrival; he has no comfort in his solitary unsavoury meal. He throws himself upon the couch of moss despondent and dissatisfied, and wakes only to pass a day as joyless, as monotonous as the former.”

Sam - Cute Summer Outfits and Summer Songs
Tumblr media
Summer Mix - Sam
1. Green Onions - Booker.T. & the M.G’s
2. Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks
3. (What A) Wonderful World - Sam Cooke
4. Be Mine - Alabama Shakes
5. The Ceiling - Lewis Del Mar
6. Olalla - Blanco White
7. Sunlight - Hozier
8. Church (Pt. Of Someone) - Stephen Stills
Getting up and ready at a nice slow summer pace. Making breakfast whilst Sam talks about what you guys could do today, wandering around the kitchen in just a pair of very small shorts, pinching bits of food from over your shoulder before you get a chance to put in on the plates.
Once you guys are ready you go for a summer morning stroll to the farmers market, picking up a few bits here and there; some veggies for dinner, a plant you couldn’t resist. Sam picks up some flowers for you and hides them behind his back like you can’t see the big yellow flower coming out from under his armpit.
Sam hands them too you and gives you that slightly shy (slightly cocky) closed smile when you breathe in the scent and thank him. From then on his hand doesn’t really leave yours all day as you walk through a shady park listening to the birds tweet and the rustling of the trees as a cool breeze washes over you.
You make your way down to the river/ beach and take your shoes off to paddle for a while and cool off. Sam flicks water at you and chases you around trying to soak you. Sam doesn’t put his shoes back on when you get out to leave.
Your carrying the big wicker bag with veggies and flowers in. Sam has his shoes in one hand and your hand in his other as you stroll back through the quiet street in the afternoon. As you’re walking down a lane you see a shop open and pop in to pick up some wine for the evening.
Getting back to your apartment as the afternoon is setting in and carrying on your chilled out day by putting on some records, opening the windows, and starting lunch/ dinner (linner?)
Additional
Sam is a little sleepy after a day in the hot sun so as you’re cooking he comes up behind you and wraps his arm around you, flopping his head on your shoulder

Cleveland & Ohio playlist
Tumblr media
CLEVELAND ROCKS!!! Actually, it sure does. Ohio has a lot of bands, a lot of songs that totally rock. Ever since I used to watch the Drew Carey Show and seeing Dave Mustaine appear on an episode, I had the idea of one day making a Cleveland/Ohio playlist. Being a huge DEVO fan also sparked that flame. What a spin out the US Election is right now. I have the TV muted and the Cleveland playlist on.
