Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band - We've Got Tonite (1978)
"Deep in my soul
I've been so lonely,
All of my hopes
Fading away.
I've longed for love,
Like everyone else does;
I know I'll keep searchin',
Even after today.
So there it is, girl,
I've said it all now.
And here we are, babe -
What do you say?"
#bob seger#bob seger & the silver bullet band#we've got tonite#1978#favourite lyrics#stranger in town#based on an older seger song called this old house#seger reworked the song as we've got tonite and recorded it in 76 during the sessions for night moves#it didn't make it onto that album because seger didn't think it made a good stylistic fit and he was probably right#instead it was held over for stranger in town the album that became seger's magnum opus#seriously every song on that album is an absolute killer#this might be my favourite though#lyrically it's straight forward and simplistic. the power is all in seger's delivery#he does something magical. this could very easily be a slightly cheesy ballad and arguably it does begin a bit like that#but seger absolutely pours his heart and soul into the words. you can feel this sort of... this struggle between loneliness and desperation#and desire and confidence. and as the song builds and the backing singers come in and the instruments swell#(brilliant work from the muscle shoals rhythm section)#he's almost bursting with emotion#and the backing singers echo key words (lonely) to hammer home the feels#idk i'm not explaining it well#i'm not alone in loving this song tho#it charted twice in the uk and again as a live version#it was also his mother's favourite of his songs#and rather sweetly bob has included it in every setlist for his live shows since her passing
