“Preserving the flow: A water conservation crusade”

Initially, it was the year 2023. Earth was passing through the worst water crisis ever seen in history. Yet, I, Dr. Dom Nika, was part of an elite team of scientists who had developed revolutionary time travel technology to address the crisis head on; this was located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Moreover, our mission was to travel through time to witness the crucial moments of waste and water scarcity to present innovative solutions.

Clearly, traveling to the bleak future in which water had become a luxury, and civilizations were on the brink of collapse had a huge impact on me. On the other hand, compared to our pristine past, we could still make a difference.

Our journey began in 2023, where we looked at the chaos of water misuse. People watering their lawns during droughts, industries irresponsibly dumping pollutants into rivers, among other wastes. In addition, we met a family in Succumb on their patio and the kids were on the garage struggling to find at least one drop of clean water; a scene that broke our hearts.

-"Dr. Nando, this has to change. Earth cannot survive this."- I said worried.

Dr. Nando nodded, his eyes were reflecting the urgency of our mission. -“Earth’s survival is in our hands, Dom. We must find a way to alter this course." - he told me.

Consequently, we traveled to 2018 in the direction of Alaska, where we presented an invention that used advanced nanotechnology, and AI to purify water efficiently. In addition, people are going to have access to clean water. But it was not enough to combat widespread abuse. So we made another trip to Sweden in 2015 , where we were in a boardroom, convincing world leaders to apply strict water conservation policies.

The Internet allowed us to disseminate information more quickly, making it a global effort. Then, we created vertical farms in desert areas, using advanced hydroponics to maximize water efficiency. Also, drylands began to flourish with agriculture, reducing pressure on freshwater sources. Said and done, by 2012, we finally returned to our year, a world on the brink of disaster. This time, we had changed the course of history and it was an achievement in history. Clean water is no longer a luxury but a human right. Water waste is minimal, and the Earth is finally healing.

A scientist we met on our journey approached us with tears in his eyes, saying: "You did it! You saved the world!" We proudly replied: “Yes, we did it for the good of all!” We used time travel to transform our future and applied solutions that prevented chaos in the world. Water is now free for all! To be honest, I missed water because I couldn’t eat my favorite food: pizza, hamburger, chili, yogurt, candy, among other delicious food.

This past decade has been a monumental ten years for the state of cinema. To think that there were actually still video rental stores all around the country, to almost becoming nonexistent, is statement enough to show how vastly audiences have changed the way they consume media. This was supposed to be shorter than it was, but Scott would not behave, so Em had to resort to other methods. I hope you enjoy it :D

This had been a very bad idea.

It had been for fun. The whole family was on vacation. Something that hadn’t happened in about ten years apparently. They holed up in a treehouse/penthouse in the Daintree. Luxury to the extreme, quiet, no one to bother them, rainforest for miles.

The Thunderchicks had the majority of emergencies. John had even dragged his girlfriend down from orbit and Gordon did similar with Penny. Considering the lovefest of the four couples in one house, it had taken Grandma to drag Alan along.

At first five hardworking men and five equally hardworking women had no idea what to do with themselves with all their responsibilities removed. Grandma had to drag both John and Scott away from the communications board at least twice. Kayo found Virgil making unneeded repairs to the building’s superstructure and had to drag him out to the garage where she had stashed his bike for this exact reason. Em noticed that the both of them stayed together in the garage for quite some time after that.

She couldn’t help but smile.

Gordon at least had the pool. One of those with the view to match the money that had been thrown at the building. Penny joined him...often.

Scott was fidgety. Em came up behind him several times and rubbed her fingers over tension points, medically attempting to get him to relax. He picked up on her technique and obviously didn’t mind in the slightest and in every case, they ended up in each other’s arms, him kissing her breathless.

Apparently, he liked doing that.

She didn’t mind at all.

Alan groaned when he walked in on them and spun on his heel and stalked out complaining.

Em ended up giggling.

But this idea? It was beyond giggling and well into hysteria.

Virgil was leaning on her to one side. Em wasn’t sure he was even aware of it. Kayo was staring into the middle of the circle at the pile of empty bottles, her face completely vague. Ridley was staring at Em, John snoring in her lap. The man could not handle his alcohol at all. Gordon was quite happy, bouncing on the spot, his eyes sparkling in the dim evening light. Penny was listing to one side, not quite colliding with Gordon, mostly because Alan was leaning against her, snoring as much as John.

Scott was conscious, but ramrod straight, controls all in place. She wanted to touch him, but she honestly wasn’t sure whether he would keel over or explode.

This was a very bad idea.

But then it had been Gordon’s after all.

“Your turn Em!” The aquanaut grinned at her.

“I think we should stop.”

“Aww, c’mon. Isn’t this what you wanted. They’re all relaxed.”

“Half of them are comatose, Gordon.” Who could possibly have thought that the Tracy brothers had done everything. The fact that all five had hung upside down from the top of a Ferris wheel had blown her mind. That had been a ridiculous suggestion, yet they had all had to drink. Apparently, it had been their last vacation in London, the Eye and an interrupting rescue. John had shuddered enough for Ridley to become concerned.

It was official. The Tracy boys had done everything.

She frantically attempted to think of something she hadn’t done that they hadn’t done.

A sigh. “Um....never have I ever...er...been arrested?” Surely, they hadn’t done that?

“Are you kidding me?” Gordon, glugged down some more drink. “That’s an easy one. Paris. The Louvre.”

What?

Scott raised his hand holding his glass. “Gordon.” As if that explained everything. He swallowed heavily.

Alan snorted, rolled and fell face first onto the carpet.

Gordon laughed. “Hey, bro. Time to take another drink. Remember the teddy bear at the fair?”

“Crap.” Alan grabbed his glass and toasted the air. “Gordon.” Apparently, it did explain everything.

“Gordon.” Kayo said it like a zombie and swallowed some more alcohol. Ridley just stared at her, but was distracted as apparently not-so-asleep John attempted to locate his glass by pawing blindly at the carpet with one hand. His mumbled “Gordon.” Was almost muffled as Ridley tried to grab his arm.

“Lawn flamingo.” Virgil attempted to bring the drink to his mouth, but missed and threw it over his shoulder instead. “Oops.”

Em blinked.

“Okay, that’s it. I’m calling this game. Off to bed with the lot of you. I have the strongest feeling that I should have taken Grandma’s advice and gone to bed early myself.”

There were many a muttered groan, mostly of ‘Awww’ and her name, but the brothers mostly stumbled to their feet. Kayo had to drag Virgil off of Em. The man was heavy.

Ridley smiled at her as she manhandled her space noodle off into their rooms. John was muttering something about ‘Gordon’s fault...didn’t want to do that in a book store.’ Penny helped Alan to his rooms, all the time shooting glares at Gordon.

“What?” The aquanaut looked non-plussed. “What did I do?”

“Gordon, go look after your brother.” Scott’s voice was firm. He still hadn’t relaxed.

Em sighed, grabbed his arm and, activating her hoverjets, pulled him up. “C’mon, Commander, time for bed.”

“Em.” And suddenly she was in his arms.

“Flyboy, your blood alcohol content can be detected from space.”

“Space!” John’s voice echoed down the hallway.

“Not today, spaceman, you’d miss TB5 and end up on Mars.” Ridley was obviously being very patient.

“Not Mars. Wrong trejacktory.” A closing door shut off the rest of the mumbled maths that followed.

“I love you, Em.”

“And I love you.” He was kissing her eyebrow. She suspected that he had been aiming for her lips. “C’mon, let’s get you to bed.” She grabbed his lips with her own. Alcohol teased her senses.

She was able to lead him to their rooms quite easily. He followed as if a little lost.

He undressed and threw on his pyjama pants. He even brushed his teeth. She took the opportunity to shed her own clothes and put on the oversized t-shirt she had stolen from him and appropriated for sleepwear. She knew he loved it that she had.

But she didn’t pull herself out of the hoverscoot. She kept herself mobile and waited for him to come to bed.

When he finally walked back in, he had toothpaste on his nose. Em couldn’t help but smile.

Grabbing a tissue, she hovered up and wiped off the offending substance and replaced it with a kiss. “Now, into bed.”

“Yes, ma’am.” He saluted and did as she asked.

“Roll onto your stomach.”

He did, and ended up in the middle of the bed. Em rolled her eyes and nudged him closer to his side. Grabbing the cream she had packed for this exact reason, careful of the ‘scoot’s palm controls, she slicked up her hands and proceed to massage every single one of those knots out of her boyfriend’s shoulders and torso.

HERE’S something I’ve been meaning to write about for awhile: environmentalism in the Czech Republic, and in Europe in general.

Now, the Czech Republic doesn’t have the eco-friendly reputation that some European countries like France or Austria do. However, from the perspective of someone from the US, the lifestyle is still a LOT greener. Here are some differences I’ve noticed:

1. Transportation. Mainly, public transportation. For a city of 100,000 people, České Budějovice has a remarkably convenient and efficient bus network, one vastly superior to the one in my home city of over 800,000. The whole country is well connected by trains (yeah, there are delays sometimes, but it’s better than nothing) so I could travel to any city in the country or even abroad for a pretty low price. South Bohemia also has fantastic bicycling paths, which in many cases are as well marked and maintained (if not better) as the roads. 

Speaking of roads, Czechs don’t like to drive. So when possible, they make use of all these public services, as well as private bus lines. (Also, shoutout to neighboring Slovakia, which provides free train service for students. Good idea Slovakia.)

2. Waste

Czechs are so, so diligent about how they handle waste. With a few exceptions, almost every Czech household I have been in has sorted out plastic, paper, and biodegradeables. Even when a household doesn’t have its own compost, there is often a city-provided compost box to dump your stuff in. However, my second host family composted their own, and used the wonderfully rich soil in their garden. 

Another way that Czechs (and Europeans in general) reduce waste is by simply not buying as much. Rather than always trying to be stocked up on everything and anything, they buy ingredients as needed. The only time this can result in a loss is with fresh bread. Almost no one eats packaged sandwich bread, bread is NEVER frozen, and so a fresh loaf often goes stale before it gets eaten. However, all my host families have then saved that bread, dried it out, and fed it to birds or given it to people they know with farm animals. 

3. No electric dryer.  I thought it would bother me, but honestly, I don’t mind at all hanging clothes outside (especially with my view now- spot the castle turret in the background.) In the winter, we hung our clothes on a rack next to the fireplace. 

4. Gardening culture! This one is my favorite. 

One of the very few pieces of information I picked up before coming to the Czech Republic was that Czechs like to garden. When I arrived in August this didn’t seem to hold true, but now that spring has come, it certainly does. Gardening just looks a little different here. Rather than rows of identical houses with a big green lawn and a large rectangular planter for colorful, decorative flowers, Czech gardens feel more practical. Many avid gardeners live in city apartments, and hold property elsewhere for gardening. For example, my host grandmother lives in a flat, but bicycles about half an hour to her garden near our house. This allows the garden to be much bigger than if it were tucked onto a city street.

And rather than filling planters with frilly, brightly colored seasonals, most Czech gardens I have seen have been mostly edible. (Don’t get me wrong, seasonal flowers are beautiful. But I personally like the Czech way better, because if I’m going to go to all the trouble of cultivating a plant, it’s much more rewarding to have something to eat in the end.) On their garden plots, Czechs grow cabbages, cucumbers, zucchini, sweet peppers, lettuce, potatoes, pumpkins, raspberries, blueberries, currant fruits, strawberries, and apples. They plant herbs and spices to use in the kitchen, and then they actually use them in the kitchen. (My family has a bay leaf plant in the living room. I had no idea what it was until my host mom told me to go get some of it for the soup.) 

I recently read Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food, and it has given me a lot to think about. But I think many of his ideas would seem painfully obvious to a Czech grandmother. Pollan argues that gardening and preparing fresh food inevitably improves both the quality of what we eat and the impact we have on the environment. I am convinced, after reading his book and after helping in gardens here, that it would be a thousand times easier to make people care about soil and water quality and climate, if those people were paying attention to all those factors and how they affected the raspberries they wanted to put on their waffles. 

This year in the Czech Republic, the winter was extremely mild and spring came early. Everything is blooming and becoming ripe a full month in advance. This is a big deal, because people expect to eat things when they are fresh. Last week, cherries became ripe, and I immediately noticed that every fifth person seemed to be carrying an enormous number of cherries down the street with them. Before that, it was strawberries. Soon, Czechs will go out to the forests to harvest blueberries, and in the fall, mushrooms.

I’ve found it difficult to express this observation of greater connection to nature to Czechs. Much of the younger generation, for one, doesn’t garden or forage, and isn’t nearly as interested in the seasons as their parents or grandparents. When I have gushed to older Czechs my admiration for the freshly cooked meals, the carefully tended gardens, the bakeries with cheap, whole grain bread, and the composts, their reactions are generally along the lines of, “um... thanks?” To most Czechs I’ve spoken to, local, unprocessed food isn’t some kind of hipster luxury- it’s just what makes the most sense. That isn’t to say that Czechs don’t import pineapples year round or eat processed things, they definitely do. But there is a recognition that what is better for the environment is also healthier and tastier. I firmly believe that, for the long-term health of the planet, that is a subtle culture difference which matters. 

5. Forests. Disclaimer: Slovaks will laugh at me for being impressed by Czech forests. Also, I googled “Czech forests” to find statistics for this post, and this was one of the first results: http://www.radio.cz/en/section/panorama/environmentalists-ringing-alarm-bells-over-ailing-czech-forests

That said, the World Bank estimated that in 2015 34.5% of Czech land was forest, and that percentage is increasing. Numbers aside, Czech forests are great because they are accessible. Trails are numerous and well marked. Every castle I have visited- and there are many, many castles- have at least a small woods around them which someone living in the castle used as hunting grounds at some point. It is never difficult to get to the woods, living in South Bohemia. That is something I appreciate a lot, not just for the climate benefits.

Ford is the undisputed king of trucks. Here's how it got there “Obviously, they’re not the only company looking into this, but they are probably the most important,” Kelley Blue Book editor Allyson Harwood said. Ford introduced the first factory-built pickup with a steel cargo bed, a version of the Model T Runabout, in 1925. There are older Ford trucks, including the heavy-duty Ford Model TT introduced in 1917, but they were mostly sold without cargo beds. Other companies added those. Henry Ford had resisted building complete trucks with factory-installed beds for fear of angering the many firms that relied on making these customizations, according to the book “Classic Pickup Trucks” by Mike Mueller. Trucks became so important to Ford that, following World War II, as the company transitioned from building bombers and Jeeps to making passenger vehicles again, its first new product was the 1948 Ford F-1 pickup, the start of today’s F-series line. “If you read the brochure for that vehicle, it reads just like it reads today,” said Ted Ryan, Ford’s archive manager, “The bed, the towing capacity, the cab comfort, all those were stressed in the 1948 brochure with the F-1.” The F-series was launched just as major changes were happening in America. Government-backed mortgage programs, benefits for veterans, higher paying jobs and new construction techniques created vast new housing developments outside of big cities. These areas weren’t rural exactly, but they weren’t urban, either. They were suburban. Suburbs weren’t new, of course. Areas of separated — but not too separated — homes surrounded by lawns, bushes and fences, had long existed. But this confluence of changes and incentives accelerated their growth. In 1940, 13.4% of Americans lived in suburbs, according to data from the Census Bureau. By 1970, 37% did. By 2010, the trend had continued to the point that half of Americans lived in the suburbs. This created new markets for pickups in a number of ways, some experts said, as well as changes in the trucks themselves. In rural America, pickups had been a transportation staple as they are still today. In the suburbs, though, homeowners with lawns to care for and houses to fix found they needed pickup trucks, too, said B. Mitchell Carlson, an expert on classic pickups. “Now I got to go to the hardware store and I need to get grass seed and I need to get fertilizer,” he said. With a growing number of two-car households and two-car garages, pickups could work as a second errand-runner next to the family sedan or wagon, said Carlson. Around this time, pickups also started getting a bit nicer, too. More ‘creature comforts’ “They were starting now to actually have, like, dual sun visors and everything like that,” he said. “They were starting to get more creature comforts.” Trucks started to look more refined. The Chevrolet Cameo Carrier, which came out in 1955, “easily deserves credit for introducing this country’s first truly classy pickup,” according to Mueller’s book. Sleek and car-like, the smooth-sided Chevrolet lacked the bulging rear fenders that had long been standard on pickups. Andy Weise, who teaches American urban history at San Diego State University, is skeptical of the notion that pickups would have made big inroads into middle class suburban garages. No matter how well-equipped or nicely designed, trucks would simply have been too déclassé for most upwardly mobile Americans in the 1950s to want to park at home, he said. But, he said, the rise of the suburbs created a new class of entrepreneurs who could earn a living fixing the homes and sprucing up the yards of their wealthier neighbors. “My sense of the pickup truck in the suburbs is very much connected to class,” Wiese said, “and I think the people who would have had trucks in the suburbs would have been working class people who did so much of a work on the bigger properties, especially.” Cotten Seiler, who teaches American Studies at Dickinson College and who wrote the book “Republic of Drivers: A Cultural History of Automobility in America,” pointed out that suburbanization didn’t just pull people from the cities. Urbanization and high-paying union jobs also pulled people from rural areas into suburbs and they brought their trucks with them. “In terms of social mobility, those people didn’t trade in their pickup trucks for sedans, they traded in their pickup trucks for nicer pickup trucks,” he said. And as their descendants, who continued driving trucks, moved upward economically, trucks became still nicer and more luxurious, Seiler said. Around the same time, pickup trucks got special protections that helped seal their identification as purely American products, Seiler said. The all-American truck He was talking about the “chicken tax,” which was instituted in 1964 in retaliation for French and West German tariffs on American poultry. The Johnson administration placed a 25% tariff on imported trucks that remains in place to this day. With a protected market, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler — today part of Stellantis — made their trucks cultural statements in addition to just transportation. “There was a Chevy ad like ‘This is our country, this is our truck’ and, in some ways that sort of crystallizes that sense of the identification of the nation with this protected… product,” said Seiler. Today, Toyota and Nissan offer full-size pickups, as well as smaller mid-size trucks. Honda sells the Ridgeline, and Hyundai recently unveiled the Santa Cruz, both smaller, car-like trucks, which are being built in the United States, thus avoiding the tax. Still, the traditional American full-size truck manufacturers dominate the market like half-ton gorillas. Even Ford and GM now offer smaller “mid-sized” trucks, like the Chevrolet Colorado and Ford Ranger, that are designed to appeal to those who use trucks more for play than work. They also appeal more to people in dense, urban areas where large trucks can be a challenge to drive and park. Ford executives have been open about plans for an even smaller truck than the Ranger for the American market. Ford, in particular, deserves credit for making bold technological leaps rather than resting easy in its position as Lord of Trucks, said Kelley Blue Book’s Harwood. In 2011, Ford introduced a turbocharged V6 engine option in a truck market dominated by big V8s. In 2015, a redesigned F-150 arrived with an all-aluminum body, something once unthinkable in a product when relatively heavy steel had long been associated with durability. And just last year, Ford began selling the first fully hybrid pickup. So when Ford recently revealed the F-150 Lightning, the first fully electric full-sized pickup truck, it showed the genius of Ford’s penchant for innovation, Harwood said. Ford did this by focusing on the actual needs of truck buyers, like a 10,000-pound towing capacity and a bed designed to work with accessories purchased for other F-150 trucks, rather than flashy stuff like the Lightning’s zero-to-60 acceleration. “What Ford is really doing is they’re taking people along on their innovation journey,” she said. “They’re saying, ‘We’re going to push this.
