“From now onward Pakistan would only partner another country in peace; we will not become part of any other conflict, we will not join any other country in its conflict”
Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan, Speaking at World Economic Forum, 2020
With its tag line, “together for peace” resonating powerfully in the far reaches of the Indian Ocean region and beyond, the 42-country multinational mega biennial exercise AMAN-21 of Pakistan Navy concluded this February 16.
Urdu News Pakistan
A grand international fleet review was held in the North Arabian Sea on the culminating day. With dozens of warships representing wide ranging countries and stationed in a massive formation natively called, “AMAN formation, the imposing finale was witnessed by President of Pakistan, Dr.
Arif Alvi. He was joined by the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Minister for Defense Production, Chief Minister Sindh, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, Chief of the Army staff and the Chief of the Air staff.
This was besides Emissaries of various countries in Pakistan. The traditional AMAN formation denotes, “unity and collective resolve”.
The proceedings on the final day were reviewed by dignitaries while on-board, PNS MOAWIN.
The name of the ship, PNS MOAWIN, itself signifies collaboration, or coming together. Jointly constructed by Pakistan navy with a Turkish firm at local, Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works (KS&EW), the ship stands as pride of the nation.
It was commissioned as recently as October 2018 and aptly symbolized the spirit that underpinned AMAN-21.
Latest Urdu News Pakistan
“I often queried that why my success should come as someone’s failure or why would my success mean that someone must lose.
There has to be a way where we all can win and because this goes against the established thinking and psychology, therefore it needs paradigm shift. Let’s come together; understand each other, and fight the common enemy”, was the clarion call given by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi on the occasion of curtain- raiser for AMAN-21 on 12 February.
Latest Urdu News Pakistan On this occasion, a record number of naval and marine officers, ships and air unit crews as well as observers from various countries witnessed the stirring flag hoisting ceremony at Pakistan Navy Dockyard, Karachi.
These included representatives from, China, Russia, Indonesia, the United States, United Kingdom, and Iran, Sri-Lanka, Turkey, Malaysia and other ASEAN states as well as African Union, EU, GCC and NATO.
The most striking feature of AMAN-21 was the presence of Russian Navy.
It was icebreaking moment with arch-rival, the United States Navy showing presence alongside. The last time Russian Navy conducted joint military drills with NATO members was in the “Bold Monarch” exercise in 2011.
Latest Urdu News Pakistan This move in AMAN-21 did not go unnoticed. Tributes were aglow, even from across the border. “I must commend Pakistan Navy for holding such a large-scale exercise in post Covid period. One of your (Pakistan Navy) greatest achievement, as one must learn from all and everyone, is to bring Russia and United States together on a single platform; for that alone Pakistan and Pakistan Navy deserves rich tributes.
It becomes singular since the two countries (Russia and the United States) have been hostile and at odds since 2014—and for this you (Pakistan Navy) can comfortably add another jewel in its crown”, so remarked Lt Gen KJ Singh during a live video conversation on a private television network.
AMAN-21 was split in two phases of harbor and sea.
Latest Urdu News Pakistan In the former seminars, symposiums, discussion sessions, international get-together, and cultural festivities to showcase Pakistan as an opulent society with great traditions were profitably held.
In the next phase, tactical manoeuvres and exercises like anti-piracy, counterterrorism and search and rescue missions etc. were conducted at sea.
AMAN-21 aimed to strengthen and develop cooperation among world navies in order to promote regional stability and to counter common maritime threats.
It was a rare opportunity for participating countries to rub shoulders with global counterparts putting aside their differences to work towards a common cause, develop synergy and doctrinal interoperability to fight unconventional threats.
The high point on closing day was the international fleet review in which formation of ships conducted manoeuvres while marine and Special Forces and air elements displayed their skills.
There were Para jumps, and a fly past by Pakistan Navy aviation as well as Pakistan Air Force. Aircraft from participating countries too flew past over the AMAN-21 formation.
Earlier, the message of Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Niazi was read out during the Opening Ceremony.
In his message, the Admiral warmly welcomed the participants of the exercise, the seventh edition in the AMAN series commandeered by Pakistan Navy since 2007. ‘AMAN-21 will provide a medium to develop doctrinal synergy to tackle maritime security challenges and to enhance interoperability amongst navies at different pedestals of technological prowess to come together and secure a sustainable maritime environment’, read the message.
On 13 February, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Niazi paid a visit on-board the Indonesian, Russian and Sri-Lankan naval ships.
Latest Urdu News Pakistan The senior officers and each commanding officer of the visiting ships received Naval Chief in befitting manner. They deeply appreciated the enduring efforts of Pakistan Navy in mustering global navies and working towards shared commitment of maritime peace, stability and legitimate order at sea.
The highlight of the first phase of exercise, 13 to 15 February was devoted to International Maritime Conference (IMC-21).
The conference brought together a wide array of distinguished international and national scholars as well as subject matter experts. The scholars addressed large multinational gatherings. Under the overarching theme, “Development of Blue Economy under a Secure and Sustainable Environment: A shared future for Western Indian Ocean”, the erudite speakers proffered creative solutions to oceanic problems afflicting the region.

Turkey has a plan for the invasion of Greece, secret documents reveal

Turkey has a plan for the invasion of Greece, secret documents reveal
Abdullah Bozkurt
Turkey has a plan for the invasion of Greece codenamed after an 11th century Turkish military commander who ruled an independent state during the Byzantine era, secret documents have revealed.
According to a Power Point presentation prepared by the General Staff for an internal planning review, Turkey drew up a plan for a secret military operation named “TSK Çakabey Harekât Planlama Direktifi” (TSK [Turkish Armed Forces] Çakabey Operation Planning Directive). The document has a date of June 13, 2014, suggesting that it was most likely updated and finalized on that date after a review of an earlier version and is presumably still active.
The first slide from a secret Power Point presentation that shows the name of the military offensive against Greece (Parts that are not related to this news story have been blurred.):
Operation_PLanning_directives_Greece1
Another slide from the same secret document lists Turkey’s military offensive plans against Greece and Armenia with corresponding dates indicating when they were drawn up:
Operation_PLanning_directives_Greece_and_Armenia
The documents were discovered in a court case file in the Turkish capital where investigating prosecutor Serdar Coşkun, a loyalist of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, appears to have forgotten to remove the classified documents before submitting them to the court. They were collected from the General Staff headquarters during an investigation into a failed coup on July 15, 2016. The documents including the invasion plan for the Greece were found to have been exchanged among top commanders at the General Staff as they use a secure internal email communications system. Coşkun ordered the military to forward copies of all email messages for the previous two months including the encrypted ones, on August 1, 2016.
Defense Minister Hulusi Akar boarded Turkish navy frigate Barbaros on May 24, 2020 to send a warning message to Greece. He was joined by his top brass. The banner reads “Whoever rules the seas, rules the world,” quoting Ottoman admiral Barbaros (Barbarossa) Hayreddin Pasha.
Ten days later, on August 11, 2016, the prosecutor assigned his trusted helper, a police officer named Yüksel Var, to collect emails from the General Staff’s internal servers and report back to him. A commission set up by military technicians under Var completed its work on February 14, 2017. In the end, the indictment filed by prosecutors Necip Cem İşçimen, Kemal Aksakal and İstiklal Akkaya in March 2017 with the Ankara 17th High Criminal Court included all the emails collected from General Staff computers. No communication was found in the emails indicating any hint of the failed coup, which many believe was a false flag operation orchestrated by Erdoğan and his intelligence and military chiefs to set up the opposition for persecution and a mass purge.
The Turkish prosecutor ordered that all copies of the emails be sent to his office:
Serdar_Coskun_order
It was not surprising to see that Turkish planners named the military action against Greece for Çaka Bey (Tzachas in Greek), a revered name in Turkey, especially among navy people, as the man who led the first-ever Turkish expedition in the Aegean. Çaka Bey’s forces took over islands in the Aegean such as Lesbos, Samos, Chios and Rhodes as well as some territory in the Aegean coastlands in 1088-91 from the Byzantine Empire. Some in Turkey even call him the founding father of the Turkish navy.
The website of the Turkish Naval Command (Türk Deniz Kuvvetleri) lists 1081 as the date when the first modern Turkish navy was established under Çaka Bey’s rule. It states that Çaka Bey established a shipyard in Izmir, built a 50-vessel armada to venture out into Aegean waters and defeated the Byzantine navy. The Naval Museum Command has a statue portraying Çaka Bey as the first Turkish admiral in its museum in Istanbul.
The Erdoğan government has also been promoting the legacy of Çaka Bey for years. Binali Yıldırım, Erdoğan’s most trusted loyalist who had served 12 years as minister for maritime affairs before becoming prime minister and then parliament speaker, launched a campaign in 2010 to commemorate Çaka Bey’s record. During the September 2010 Maritime Culture Festivities, Yıldırım was seen displaying Çaka Bey’s maritime ship lantern (Çaka Bey Türk Denizcilik Ateşi), which was transported from Istanbul to Izmir.
Binali Yıldırım, former prime minister of Turkey, is seen holding Çaka Bey’s maritime ship lantern, which was transported from Istanbul to Izmir in September 2010 to commemorate the legacy of the person some consider to be the founding father of the Turkish navy.
The document does not have any details on the specifics of the plan other than the name and the updated date of the plan. The details of the invasion must have been marked “top secret” and as such could not be shared through the intranet system run on the email exchange servers of the Turkish military. According to a TSK directive on information security that was explained in document No. MY114-4 (B), such sensitive plans can only be transmitted through a special communications systems called the Message Document Distribution System (Mesaj Evrak Dağıtım Sistemi, or MEDAS), or Automated Messaging Forwarding System (Otomatik Mesaj Aktarma Sistemi, or OMASIS).
The Power Point document appears to have been prepared for presentation at headquarters as a contingency plan with regard to developments in Syria. The Turkish military was assessing its capabilities and troop commitments according to various planning directives in effect with respect to its neighboring countries. They wanted to maintain their offensive and deterrence capabilities on the western front while moving some troops and equipment to the Syrian border.
The review of the documents also indicates that the General Staff, which shared the emails at the outset, panicked eight months later over the possible fallout from the revelation of the sensitive documents and started sounding the alarm. The first warning letter was written on March 8, 2017 by Lt. Gen. Uğur Tarçın, head of the General Staff Communication, Electronic and Information Systems (Muhabere, Elektronik ve Bilgi Sistemleri, or MEBS). He warned the legal department of the General Staff that the documents contained secret documents about the national security of Turkey, classified intelligence reports and operations in Syria and the eastern Mediterranean. He said the documents must be kept secret and not shared with any unauthorized persons.
Lt. Gen. Uğur Tarçın’s warning about the secret General Staff documents came months later:
Ugur_Tarcin_mebs_warning
Acting on the advice of the MEBS commander, the General Staff’s deputy legal counsel Col. Aydın Seviş wrote to the Ankara 17th High Criminal Court on August 24, 2017, repeating the same concerns about the secret documents and urged the establishment of a commission to screen the documents. However, Turkish prosecutors appeared to have paid no attention to their concerns and included all the emails with their attachments of secret documents in the case file, exposing the highly classified information including the name of the invasion plan for Greece.
The documents confirms what Nordic Monitor previously reported with respect to Armenia. An operation codenamed “Altay,” which was the name assigned to the military action against Armenia in another document, was also incorporated into the case file by prosecutor Coşkun. The same operation name was listed in the Power Point presentation as well.
Col. Aydın Seviş sent a letter to the court expressing concerns about the secret military documents when they were already incorporated into the case file:
General_Staff_warning_to_court
The Erdoğan government has been ratcheting up its belligerent rhetoric against Greece since 2013, when it was rattled by major corruption investigations that incriminated Erdoğan, his family members and business and political associates. The Turkish president, backed by his nationalist and neo-nationalist allies, has been using Greece as a punching bag to create a distraction from troubles on the domestic front. His government recently publicly backed converting Hagia Sophia, currently a museum, into a mosque, sparking a huge reaction from Greece.
Turkey and Greece, two NATO allies and neighbors, are at odds over the boundaries of their territorial waters and airspace in the Aegean, where some Greek islands are lined up along Turkey’s western coasts. The delimitation of the Aegean continental shelf, a dispute that concerns Turkish and Greek rights to economic exploitation of resources on and under the Aegean seabed in an area that stretches between their territorial waters and the high seas, remains unresolved.
Turkey-Libya maritime and security deals signed with Libya’s National Accord Government (GNA) in November 2019 have also shaken up politics in the Mediterranean, with some European and other regional states launching diplomatic and military counter-offensives. The maritime agreement determines the Turkey-Libya continental shelf and exclusive economic zone (EEZ), while the security deal allows the Turkish government to deploy troops in Libya and transfer paramilitary SADAT units and jihadists from Idlib to the Mediterranean country.
The website of the Turkish Navy Command lists 1081 as the date when the first modern Turkish navy was established under Çaka Bey’s rule.

Christmas aboard the SR1
“Merry Christmas, Skipper!”
The cheerful cry greeted her the very second she stepped out of her cabin Christmas morning. For fuck’s sake. She hadn’t even had coffee yet.
Against her better judgement, her eyes drifted to the mess hall table, where she was greeted by the sight of a disgustingly cheerful gunnery chief dressed in one of those god-awful Christmas jumpers. She’d even placed one of those poorly constructed tissue paper crowns on her head, just to really complete the look.
“Merry Christmas, Ash,” she replied dutifully, staggering over to the coffee pot and pouring herself a cup. She debated for a moment, wondering whether it was worth burning her tongue in order to get the caffeine into her system as quickly as possible. Then she caught a glimpse of almost unbearable festive cheer reflected in her mug. She took a mouth-searing gulp.
“So any plans for the big day?” Shepard asked, taking a seat opposite the gunnery chief. She noticed, with a sense of impending dread, that the Christmas jumper was complete with lights and the obligatory awful pun (which in this case was ‘nice baubles’). With her luck it probably even played some annoying little tune when you pressed something.
She probably shouldn’t be such a humbug.
Not that she was really a humbug! It was just… Christmas didn’t really mean anything to her. Not now, not really. It wasn’t like she had a family to go to or a home to be at. If she wasn’t on duty she usually just hung around the bar in Alliance Command. Some years she’d get lucky and some of her friends would be around too, other years she wasn’t so lucky. Generally, she tried to be on duty if she could be. Christmas on duty was roughly a thousand times better than Christmas not on duty.
Except this year, apparently.
She really shouldn’t be such a humbug.
“The usual Christmas on duty plan,” Ash answered her. “Call mom. Miss her home cooking while I choke down the tasteless dry turkey that only Alliance HQ can provide. Find a good bar on the Citadel… Hey, you wanna come? Drinks are on Joker!”
“On Joker?” Shepard questioned with all due suspicion.
Ash nodded, a grin spreading across her face. “Yup. He lost a bet. Told me he could rig the Normandy’s enviro systems enough to make it snow. Well, I woke up this morning and no snow. So, he loses!”
She wisely decided not to ask any follow up questions about the snow. It clearly hadn’t happened, and looking into the whys and hows would probably only lead to either a headache or more paperwork. Or both. Probably both.
“Well, I’m not one to pass up a free drink on Christmas. Or ever. Count me in.” Shepard raised her coffee mug in a ‘cheers’ motion and forced her smile a little wider.
Ash grinned. “Excellent. LT said he’d come along too, so…”
Before she could finish her sentence or Shepard could really process what she’d said, the man himself walked into the room, slightly staggering under the bulk of the large box he was carrying.
“It’s here,” he announced happily, dumping the box onto the table with a very solid sounding thud.
“What’s here?” Ash asked.
“Care package from my mom.” Kaidan’s eyes were glittering as he tore open the flaps and immediately attempted to insert nearly half his torso into the box. “Should be here somewhere…” His muttering was half drowned out by the sound of various items being shuffled about. “Aha!” He straightened triumphantly, a clear plastic bag clutched in his hand.
“Cookies?” Shepard was sceptical. Who got that excited about cookies?
“Hey. These are my mom’s Christmas cookies.” The lift at the corner of his mouth belying his serious tone. “And they’re amazing.” He cracked the bag open just a little, pressing it to his face to inhale their scent. “Smells like Christmas.” He reached in, seized a tree shaped cookie and stuffed almost the entire thing into his mouth. “Tastes like it too. You want one, Chief? Commander?”
When they’d both taken a cookie, he dropped the rest of the bag onto the table and disappeared back into the box. She was glad he had. She wasn’t sure she could take his smugness as she bit into the cookie and was immediately forced to concede that it was one of the best things she’d ever tasted.
“Okay we have… crackers.” Kaidan temporarily rose from the box in order to drop a mountain of brightly coloured crackers onto the mess table. “Turkey, ham and stuffing…” Three more clear plastic bags filled to the brim with food landed on the table. “Chocolates, mince pies, candy canes…”
Ash and Shepard stared at each other in shock as the table was gradually filled up with what Mrs Alenko considered the essentials of Christmas.
“Tinsel… I told her not to pack that this year. She never listens. Party poppers…”
Ash made a grab for the poppers as soon as they landed. Seconds later, Shepard was covered in sparkly plastic ribbon and thoroughly un-amused.
“Whiskey….” Kaidan continued “and ah, Canadian Lager. Good.”
“You know that’s not allowed in theatre, Lieutenant,” Shepard regretfully reminded him. She didn’t enjoy putting the kibosh on his Christmas cheer but rules were rules. (As she so often had to remind herself around him.)
“Actually, Commander, regulation states that officers can consume alcohol in theatre on Christmas Day. Providing it doesn’t affect their duties the following day. And the entire supply is consumed on December 25th.” Kaidan reeled off the paragraph like he’d been practising it.
“Challenge accepted.” Ash shrugged and cracked open a can.
However, Shepard noticed Kaidan was hesitating, waiting for her approval. She had no idea why, because hell, if he said that it was regulation she was willing to bet that it was regulation. After all, he probably knew them a whole lot better than she did.
Smiling, she gestured for him to carry on. He dove back into the box, with what appeared to be his customary Christmas enthusiasm. Seconds later he emerged once more, holding a large blue package.
“The annual Christmas jumper,” he explained, tearing away the plastic covering currently protecting the knitwear. He unfurled the jumper, grinned and began pulling it over his head. Shepard only just managed to refrain from rolling her eyes.
Once he’d put it on though, she had to admit that clearly some Christmas jumpers weren’t horrific. In contrast to Ash’s twinkly, gaudy, overly bright monstrosity, his was a nice dark blue and the only decoration was two lines of white snowflakes running across the broadest part of his chest.
He looked good. Really good. Blue, it seemed, was most definitely his colour.
“Nice,” Ash complimented him. (Shepard didn’t exactly trust herself to speak.) “We should get one for Shepard too, complete the trio.”
“That’s really not necessary,” Shepard drawled, her brain shifting from vague daydreams about Alenko in dress blues to sarcasm in the blink of an eye.
Ash’s face lit up, as per usual. The more sarcastic she was, the more determined Ash became.
“C’mon Commander,” she wheedled. “You should join in the fun. Right, LT?”
“I’m not getting involved,” Kaidan wisely replied, diving back into the box before Ash could cajole him further. When he resurfaced he was holding an ordinary looking OSD. “A recording of the Canucks game,” he clarified. “Which I will definitely be watching later and err… this… This is for you, Commander.” A faint blush coloured his cheeks.
“For me?” She was genuinely confused as she reached out and took the small brown box he was offering to her. “Why has your mom sent something for me?”
To her eternal joy the red tinge on his cheeks deepened. “I… er… I may have mentioned to her that you… er… didn’t have a family and, um… you said you’d never had a birthday present, so I guess she just….” He trailed off, his cheeks now a deep crimson. Awkwardly, he rubbed the back of his neck and avoided eye contact as much as possible.
She tried to be impassive, desperately wanting to try and hit his maximum embarrassment threshold, but it was hard to do when she was so incredibly touched by the gesture. She couldn’t help but smile at him. Not even a half smile, or her trademark smirk, but a real full blown smile. It took him a few moments to notice, but when he did he relaxed a little and then, he smiled back.
God, she loved his smile. Like her, he didn’t often smile fully. Usually it was the little half smile that she’d first seen in the med bay after Eden Prime all those months ago. When he did smile though, it transformed his face. He seemed younger, more carefree. When he smiled, it reached all the way up into his eyes, making them shine with warmth.
“I’m gonna see if the square stockings are here,” Ash interrupted, forcing Shepard to tear her eyes away from his, which, all things considered, was probably a bloody good thing. Staring at each other like that was a good way to end up in a frat regs related courts martial.
As Ash dashed off, he slid into the seat opposite her and nodded at the box in her hand. “Open it?” he said, a flicker of something that could be called nerves crossing his expression.
She paused for a moment, wondering what she’d find. She searched his face for clues before finally giving up and opening the box. When she tipped it up a flurry of packing material fell out and something hard landed in her palm.
It was a snow globe.
But instead of snow it had tiny silver stars.
And instead of the traditional Christmas village scene there was her Normandy.
“Do you like it?” he asked softly. Suddenly she became aware of his intense stare behind the snow globe that was legitimately taking up most of her vision and attention. She swallowed around the unexpected lump in her throat and nodded, unable to speak just yet.
“How did your mom get a model of the Normandy?” she asked after a moment, immediately wincing as she realised what an awfully stupid thing that was to say. “I mean, not that I’m not grateful, I am, it’s just… the design is classified so… how?”
The more familiar half smile appeared on his face.
“Dad must have pulled a few strings with his old Alliance contacts.”
Kaidan shrugged it off but she wasn’t fooled. She doubted that an ex-marine would have had the pull to commission a model of a top secret, top of the range, frontline warship. No. if anyone had done this, it had to have been him.
“Thank you.” she said trying to convey her sincere gratitude through her tone alone. A touch of something like panic seemed to rise in his eyes as he clearly worried she’d figured him out, so she added, “I mean, thank your mom for me.”
“I will,” he said as his hand twitched in the way it did sometimes. She liked to think that the gesture was the physical manifestation of him stifling the impulse to reach out to her. It probably wasn’t, but since she often had difficulty with the same thing, she liked to think it was.
Realising they were staring at each other again, she tucked the snow globe safely into the pocket of her BDUs and did the only thing she could think of to diffuse the tension between them. She picked up the nearest thing to her, braced her elbow on the table and extended her hand towards him.
“Pull my cracker?” she said, plastering her most serious expression across her face. He shot her the look - the half amused half weary look he shot her whenever she was deflecting emotion with dirty jokes.
When Ash returned she was still chucking at the horrendously bad joke that had come from the cracker and he was obediently pulling the paper hat onto his head.
“They’re here,” she declared, tossing a familiar grey box complete with a sad sparkly red Santa on it in front of each of them. “I’ve had Serviceman Burns hand out to the crew, but I’ve got ours.”
“Best thing about Christmas on tour,” Shepard noted. “A box of free stuff.”
“Yeah,” Ash said dropping into the seat beside her. “Doesn’t beat Christmas at home though. Right now my sisters will be arguing over whose present mom should open first while the turkey burns.”
“Yeah,” Alenko breathed, a faintly dreamy look crossing his features. “My mom always cooks enough to feed the five thousand; triple bird roast, honey glazed ham, roast potatoes home grown on the farm, pigs in blankets, stuffing rolls, homemade cranberry sauce….”
“Shut up, you’re making me jealous,” Ash said, shoving him and stopping his list of mouth-watering food. “My mom’s a terrible cook.”
“Yeah?” Kaidan sounded surprised that anyone’s mom could be a bad cook.
“Oh yeah.” A dreamy look now crossed her own face. “Dad was the real chef. The first year he was on tour for Christmas? Sarah cried. So mom made it a game, how much awful food could we eat? And whoever ate the most got the biggest slice of store-bought dessert. Now it’s tradition.”
Kaidan nodded understandingly. “Traditionally, we men-folk are banned from the kitchen until after dinner. Then we wash up before the game.”
“Medieval much?”
“Hey, you try arguing with my mother on Christmas,” Kaidan shot back. “I guarantee you won’t win.”
“I’m all for a traditional Christmas fight,” Ash replied, grinning from ear to ear.
“What about you, Commander?” Kaidan asked turning to her before Ash got too ‘into’ the idea of a Christmas punch-up. “Any Christmas traditions from… your parents?” His voice trailed off in the way that people always did when they suddenly remembered, mid-sentence, that her parents were dead.
“You know, it’s funny, I don’t really remember.”
She was lying. She did remember the old Christmas decorations, antique ones that were falling to bits and had no glitter left, but still went on the tree. She remembered the wooden nativity set, hand carved by her uncle before she was even born. She remembered… She remembered a lot of things, but she wasn’t about to bring down her crew with memories of her dead parents.
“But there was this one time my squad and I were in a bar…”
She could get used to this, she decided, hours later. A Christmas that was a mishmash of all their traditions. It had started with the terrible vacuum-packed Alliance issue Christmas dinner. That had taken care of Ash’s tradition of terrible food. A dessert of Momma-Alenko’s Christmas cookies while watching the game had taken care of Kaidan’s Christmas. And now the bar they were currently sat in crossed off Shepard’s one and only remaining tradition of brightly coloured drinks and bad lighting.
Most of the crew had joined them by this point. All of them wearing the poorly constructed paper cracker hats since Joker had somehow managed to convince everyone of their absolute necessity. Hilariously while most of them had to stop and replace their hat from time to time, Garrus’ fringe kept his hat on better than anyone else’s, and she doubted she’d forget the image of the tiny yellow paper crown perched on top of Wrex’s massive head anytime soon.
“Okay,” Kaidan announced as he returned to their table from the bar. “This is supposedly called a ‘Christmas Wish’.” He slid one of the tall bright red drinks he was carrying in front of Shepard and then paused, glancing at the empty seat that Ash had just vacated. “Where’s Ash?”
Shepard pointed to the dance floor where Ash, Tali and Liara were dancing up a storm. Shepard had decided against joining them… for reasons.
“You don’t feel like dancing, Commander?” Kaidan asked, that unmistakable glint in his eye telling her explicitly that he was teasing her.
“Not unless you do, Lieutenant,” she shot back just as teasingly.
He directed that warm little half smile back before grabbing his drink and sliding into the seat next to her, just a fraction of a fraction closer than he should have.
“So what makes this a Christmas wish then?” Determined, she turned away from his gaze and took a deliberate sip of her drink because damn he was close, and his lips were close, and despite this oh so careful line they’d drawn between them it was all she could do not to kiss him right now.
He took a sip from his own drink. “I think it’s mostly due to the fact that it’s red.”
“Ahh,” she replied knowingly. “That’ll be it.”
Kaidan nodded, relaxed, his gaze slipping from her toward their crew dancing. “There’s nothing like Christmas time.”
Underneath the table, his warm calloused fingers wrapped themselves around hers. She wasn’t sure whether it was the drink, or the fact it was Christmas, or the conversation they’d had last week about shore leave, but she was glad he was bold enough to do it. As she closed her fingers around his in response, she was forced to agree.
There was nothing quite like Christmas time with friends…
With him.

Tax-free office holiday parties and employee gifts
More offices are having holiday parties this year. Even better, the seasonal soirees — and small gifts for workers — could be tax free.
Most holiday office parties aren't as raucous as the one portrayed in the R-rated 2016 movie "Office Christmas Party." That's probably good for bosses, workers and the tax collector trying to make sense of the deduction claims. (Screenshot of YouTube trailer)
Offices are much more jolly this holiday season. More than three-quarters of businesses are planning parties this December.
That 76 percent of companies throwing seasonal soirees is up more than 10 percent over 2018 count of office holiday parties. The festivities are the most since 2016, according to the annual holiday party plans survey by Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
It's a nice present for folks who've in recent years haven't had much to celebrate at work.
Nearly 7 percent of this year's parties are in workplaces where one wasn't thrown the previous year or, in some cases, years.
Not sold on economy, but partying anyway: Conventional wisdom is that firms hold holiday office parties to celebrate not only the season, but also the businesses' economic successes and outlooks.
But that's not necessarily the case in 2019.
The Business Roundtable's CEO Economic Outlook Index survey for the third quarter found that corporate leaders' plans for hiring, capital investment and sales all declined last quarter.
The Challenger holiday party survey reflected similar economic sentiments. It found that fewer companies reported higher confidence in the economy than the previous year.
In fact, slightly fewer than 40 percent of participants in the Challenger survey said the 2019 economy had improved over the last year, a dramatic drop from 2018's view by more than 63 percent that the business outlook was better back then.
"While several indicators suggest companies may be concerned about the economy in the coming year, that concern does not appear to extend to the company holiday party," said Andrew Challenger, vice president of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc.
So the parties are on, with nearly 47 percent of companies not only feting their workers, but also inviting employees' families and spouses to the event.
Office party tax deductibilty rules: That inclusivity is a good thing, not only for office morale, but also for the boss' tax deduction options.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) did make several business tax deduction changes, notably reducing certain deductions for business-related meals and eliminating the write-off for business entertainment altogether.
However, it left in place certain business-related recreational activities, including office parties, during the holidays or other times of the year.
These workplace events provide a tax break for the hosting business and don't count as a taxable payment to workers as long as the event is primarily for the benefit of rank-and-file workers, known in tax parlance as non-highly-compensated employees. (Don't you feel special now?)
Employers can deduct 100 percent of the expenses for entertaining employees plus their spouses or significant others
The party's tax value, however, is a bit trickier when other folks also attend.
If the holiday party guest list includes nonemployees, such as a business owner's friends, customers, independent contractors, vendors or business associates, then the write-off is cut to only 50 percent of the costs for the others who attend.
Also consider keeping the event in-house. Events held at the worksites are less likely to create tax risks than offsite events, especially if the latter are held at locations or venues that might be considered lavish.
Three tax tips for office party hosts: The bottom line to maximizing the tax bottom-line value of your holiday party is keep these three office party planning tax tips in mind:
Invite every employee. A holiday party's cost is fully deductible as long as it's only for workers and their spouses or significant others. All of them. You can just invite the sales or tech departments or your fellow executives and expect Uncle Sam to help underwrite your exclusive celebration.
Be reasonable. Everyone loves a good party, but don't go overboard. A lavish holiday event is likely to prompt Internal Revenue Service questions. As with many tax-related things, what's lavish or extravagant in the IRS' eyes dependents on the workplace's circumstances, so use common sense. Also note that aside from the tax issues, an excessive party could cause your staff to wonder how you could pony up for such an event but not come up with raises or added workplace benefits during the year.
Don't invite clients: Sure, letting customers celebrate with your workers could help next year's numbers. It will, however, reduce how much you can deduct. It also could put a damper on the event as employees might feel like it's not a real party, but an extension of the workday.
Some employee gifts are tax-free, too: Some employers decide not to throw a party, but instead reward workers with a holiday gift.
That's still OK under the TCJA as long as it's not an extreme present. The IRS excludes from taxes de minimis, Latin for "a trivial cost," gifts.
Generally, this is stuff that is small and inexpensive enough that it would be "unreasonable or administratively impracticable" to expect the company to account for it as employee compensation.
The de minimis consideration during the year typically applies to meals or meal money when given when staff must work overtime. During the holidays, thought, this tax rule comes into pay when employers offer their workers small gifts.
Typically, the cutoff for de minimis gifts is around $25.
Note, however, the designation gift. Cash cannot be a de minimis gift, nor can cash equivalents such as gift cards. Those always count as compensation.
Among those things that the IRS says are acceptable, tax-free de minimis gifts are small foodstuffs, such as fruit baskets, hams, turkeys and wine, as well as flowers and that goofy holiday mug your boss handed out to staffers.
A few of my coffee mugs.
Regardless of how your office celebrates the season, enjoy! Just make sure you follow good office party etiquette.
And remember, if you leave the Christmas coffee cup from your boss at the office, be sure to Sharpie your name on it since everyone got the same.

Bonuses comes with tax baggage
Tax and other fun at deductible office holiday parties
Buyouts and early retirement packages are taxable income

Thumbnails is a roundup of brief excerpts to introduce you to articles from other websites that we found interesting and exciting. We provide links to the original sources for you to read in their entirety.—Chaz Ebert
1.
"Elisha Christian on 'Columbus' and 'Everything Sucks!'": The Spirit Award-nominated cinematographer chats with me about his acclaimed work on Kogonada's 2017 film and this year's acclaimed Netflix series.
“[Indie Outlook:] How did you and Kogonada develop the extraordinary shot of Jin (John Cho) and Eleanor (Parker Posey), framing them in a mirror in a way that gives us a sense of their history. We feel as if we are peering into a reflection of their past.’ [Christian:] ‘That scene took place in the same inn where Jin was staying. There were only four or five guest rooms in the whole inn, and we had our pick of which room we wanted to shoot in. That location is so visually interesting — you could shoot a whole movie there. When we saw the mirrors, we knew where we wanted to place the camera, though my AC couldn’t even stand next to it to pull focus. She had to sit underneath the camera while reaching up above her head to pull focus because the space was so slim. We even had to pull everything off the sides of the camera in order to fit in that tiny area without catching it in a reflection. We saw that if John walks out and stops at a certain point after Eleanor basically kicks him out, he could turn back to her and we’d be able to frame them both in an interesting way. It was definitely a dance. I remember that we were running behind that night. It took a while to set up the shot and get it ready, and we probably shot about 7 or 8 takes of it. We had two other shots planned in the scene, but when we got the take that Kogonada wanted, he said, ‘We don’t need the other shots.’ That’s a ballsy decision, considering the length of the scene. It’s decisions like these that made the movie better.’”
2.
"Peak superhero? Not even close: How one movie genre became the guiding myth of neoliberalism": Brilliant commentary from Salon's Keith A. Spencer.
“Obversely, this is precisely how politics functions in neoliberalism: Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were presented as branded superheroes, who believed they knew what was best for us, and sought to install their elite wonks to enact their benevolent (to them) policies. There’s a relatively two-dimensional view of the world at work: there are good and bad people; they are generally born that way and seldom change. The state in neoliberalism and superhero movies is almost entirely devoted to oppression and surveillance. If the state overreaches, heroes must fix its excesses; if it fails to protect its citizenry, heroes must make up for its shortcomings. In either case, its social welfare function is invisible: because people are innately good or evil, there are no social workers or teachers or other welfare-state employees whose duties might prevent villainy (or supervillainy) through social work. Superheroes are, by definition, more powerful and more important than the state. More importantly, the superheroes’ work may save lives, but it never inherently changes the relationships of production: If the people are poor, they’re likely to stay poor. They don’t participate in redistributive politics except to attack the sort of universally detested social relationships about which there is broad consensus — for instance, slavery. Superheroes can’t and won’t save the middle class; many of them are rich anyway and stand to benefit from the kinds of inherent economic injustices that, say, Bernie Sanders or Jeremy Corbyn fight against.”
3.
"Turkey's Government Is Censoring the Movies, But the Istanbul Film Festival Is Soldiering On": According to Indiewire's Amy Nicholson.
“No one is sure what the moral rules are. The Ministry of Culture won’t write them down. At least the Hays Code in classic Hollywood had 11 clear don’ts. Specific rules can be subverted. But Turkey’s veto power is capricious and vague. Filmmakers, especially documentary filmmakers telling unflattering stories about modern Turkey, could spend years on a movie that can’t be shown. Unpredictability pressures artists to play it safe. Some hire lawyers to help them guess whether their work might be rejected, and if so, hunt for foreign producers willing to take a controlling stake as international films don’t require a certificate yet. But as Saudi Arabia opens its first movie theater in 30 years with a screening of ‘Black Panther’—imagine women who finally got the right to drive this year beholding the Dora Milaje—Turkish people are alarmed that their government, which just disrupted the last major dissenting newspaper chain, threatened people over their footage of Taksim Square, intermittently shut off YouTube and Twitter, and is poised to ban teaching evolution in schools, is making it hard to share their stories with the outside world. Over a bottle of wine, a director sighed as she pointed toward the west, ‘News comes one way.’ The impact was everywhere. ‘I can say that there are less political movies than before,’ said current festival director Kerem Ayan on a group boat trip circling the Bosporus River. ‘But cinema is very creative. Everybody finds a different way to express what they want.’”
4.
"The Résumé: The Winding, Everlasting Career of William H. Macy": Another essential interview conducted by Sam Fragoso for The Ringer.
“I had never done anything that graphic or that sexual before ‘The Cooler.’ I’d taken my clothes off, but that’s different. And it was my adorable wife who finally said, ‘When you talk about it, it sounds like you’re planning to fail. If you don’t want to do these sex scenes, you should call the director and tell him you don’t want to do them. If you do want to do them, you better start thinking about how to make them great.’ It was a fabulous wake-up call. I married well. So I started to look at the sex scenes like any other scene—as an acting exercise. What’s different at the end of the scene than at the beginning? What happened? What’s the objective? What transpired? Where’s the moment where something changed the plot even though we’re just rolling around in bed? And to Wayne’s credit, I said, ‘I can’t understand the scene. I’m having trouble here. What happens here?’ And we talked about one or two scenes and he said, “You know what, you’re right. I can’t find it either.” And he cut them. He cut the scenes. Which is sort of the essence of art, I think: If you can cut it and still tell your story, then you have to cut it. I was shy but Maria didn’t care. She said, ‘I’m an old hippie. This is nothing.’”
5.
"50 Years Ago, a White Woman Touching a Black Man on TV Caused a National Commotion": Petula Clark and Harry Belafonte chat with Vanity Fair's Donald Liebenson about the moment that erupted into an inadvertent scandal.
“For his part, Belafonte thought there had just been a technical glitch. He did not think the touch was problematic: ‘Quite the contrary,’ he says. ‘I was quite pleased. That song, if I remember, was the last thing we shot. There was an enormous sense of release that we had pulled this off without a hitch. It was one guy—Doyle Lott—who said we had to re-shoot what we had just done. We were nonplussed as to what was the problem.’ NBC, alerted to the controversy, called Binder to say the network would back him (‘That was a great phone call to get,’ he says). With that, Binder and Wolff rushed to the studio basement to confront the editor and order him to keep the take where Clark touched Belafonte’s arm—and to erase the others so they could not be used in the broadcast. Somehow—Binder doesn’t recall what did it—word of the controversy got out early, resulting in breathless pre-broadcast news coverage. ‘Incident at TV Taping Irks Belafonte,’ said a March 7 headline in ‘The New York Times.’ The article quoted a statement from White: ‘If there was any incident . . . it resulted solely from the reaction of a single individual and by no means reflects the Plymouth Division’s attitude or policy on such matters.’ Lott’s Detroit office also issued a statement: ‘I was tired. I over-reacted to the staging, not to any feeling of discrimination.’ Binder remembers hearing that Belafonte was about to tell America to boycott Plymouth on ‘The Tonight Show’; he called the singer to tell him it wasn’t the car company’s fault, and reminded Belafonte of his conversation with White. On March 10, the ‘Times’ reported that Lott had been ‘relieved of his responsibilities.’”
