Coldplay with the Ocean Cleanup CEO Boyan Slat in Jakarta | 15.11.2023
The Ocean Cleanup and Coldplay are delighted to announce a renewal of our partnership as part of The Ocean Cleanup’s mission to rid the oceans of plastic. Coldplay teamed up with The Ocean Cleanup in 2018, sponsoring Interceptor 005 and helping us take an early step forward in our campaign to tackle the world’s most polluting rivers. Following the success of Interceptor 005 in Malaysia, supported by Coldplay and given the name ‘Neon Moon I’, we will now deploy a second Interceptor, currently under assembly and destined for the river Cisadane in Jakarta, Indonesia: Interceptor 020, or ‘Neon Moon II’. Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, and the members of Coldplay announced the renewal together on November 15 as Coldplay prepared to begin the next phase of their record-breaking Music of the Spheres world tour on Wednesday, November 15, in Jakarta. As well as contributing to Interceptor 005, Coldplay has also been screening footage of The Ocean Cleanup’s operations to their fans before their performances – bringing our message to millions of music lovers worldwide. Interceptor 005, together with Interceptor 002, has formed a central part of The Ocean Cleanup’s operations in the river Klang in Malaysia, with over 1 million kilograms prevented from reaching the oceans and helping to contribute to a cleaner environment for the local community. Both The Ocean Cleanup and Coldplay are proud to continue working together to tackle this global challenge with Neon Moon II. “It’s so exciting for us to have Coldplay on board and to be making such a huge impact together against plastic pollution in Asia,” said Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup. “We say a massive thanks to Coldplay for their help, and we can’t wait to see Neon Moon II in action and intercepting waste soon.” We are thankful for the financial support of all partners, enabling us to realize this project. The deployment of Interceptor 020 is part of The Ocean Cleanup’s Global Implementation Partnership – find out more about our operation to capture plastic in the Cisadane here.

The Most Spectacular Underwater Locations to Swim with Turtles
Swimming with turtles is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that brings travelers up close to these graceful marine creatures in their natural habitat. Whether you're an avid snorkeler or an experienced diver, there are some extraordinary locations around the world where you can dive into crystal-clear waters and interact with these ancient reptiles. In this guide, we’ll explore the most spectacular underwater locations where you can swim with turtles, including some of the best places in Australia.
1. Great Barrier Reef, Australia
The Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, is undoubtedly one of the best places to swim with turtles. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans over 2,300 kilometers and is home to six of the seven sea turtle species. Notably, it’s possible to encounter both green turtles and loggerhead turtles in this vibrant underwater ecosystem.
The reef's clear, warm waters and diverse marine life make it an ideal environment for turtle sightings. Popular areas such as Heron Island, Lady Elliot Island, and Magnetic Island offer guided tours and snorkeling opportunities where visitors can enjoy up-close encounters with these magnificent creatures. Whether you're snorkeling near coral gardens or diving at deeper sites, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-visit destination for those eager to swim with turtles.
2. Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia
Another top destination in Australia to swim with turtles is Ningaloo Reef, located off the coast of Western Australia. This reef is one of the most accessible and pristine coral ecosystems in the world. Ningaloo is particularly famous for its close proximity to the shore, allowing easy access for snorkelers and divers alike.
Here, you can encounter a variety of turtle species, including the green and hawksbill turtles. The reef’s crystal-clear waters, along with its diverse underwater landscapes, offer a perfect setting for an unforgettable encounter. Visitors can explore the reef's protected marine parks, such as the Mettam's Pool and Coral Bay, where turtles can often be seen gliding through the shallow waters.
3. Gili Islands, Indonesia
The Gili Islands, a group of three small islands off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia, are an idyllic destination for anyone wanting to swim with turtles. The waters surrounding the islands are teeming with marine life, and the Gili Trawangan, in particular, is known for its abundant turtle population.
The crystal-clear waters and coral reefs offer excellent snorkeling conditions, where you can observe sea turtles in their natural environment. Gili Meno, known as the "turtle sanctuary," is a hotspot for turtle conservation and an ideal location for turtle sightings. Whether you're snorkeling or diving, the Gili Islands provide some of the most magical encounters with sea turtles.
4. Akumal Bay, Mexico
Located along the Yucatán Peninsula, Akumal Bay in Mexico is a haven for turtle lovers. Known as the "place of turtles" in Mayan, Akumal is famous for its sea turtle population, where both green and loggerhead turtles are frequently spotted. The bay’s calm, shallow waters make it a perfect spot for beginner snorkelers and experienced divers alike.
Here, visitors can swim alongside sea turtles while exploring the stunning coral reefs and underwater caves. Akumal Bay is a protected area, ensuring that the turtles are well-preserved, and there are various eco-friendly tours available for those wishing to swim with turtles while respecting the delicate marine ecosystem.
5. Turtle Bay, Hawaii
Hawaii is another dream destination for those wanting to swim with turtles. Turtle Bay, located on the North Shore of Oahu, offers some of the most consistent opportunities to encounter Hawaiian green sea turtles, locally known as “honu.” These majestic creatures are a common sight in the calm, shallow waters of Turtle Bay, making it an ideal spot for snorkelers to enjoy an up-close experience.
In addition to Turtle Bay, many other areas around the Hawaiian Islands, such as Makena Beach on Maui and Laniakea Beach on Oahu, are famous for their turtle sightings. Hawaii’s warm waters and thriving coral reefs offer an excellent environment for turtles to thrive, and visitors can often see these creatures resting on the sandy beaches or swimming gracefully through the water.
