Match Review: Doncaster Rovers 3-3 Manchester United U21s (3-5 P)

Tuesday night saw United's young devils claim a crucial two points in the English Football League trophy, after a tough draw away to Doncaster but a clinical penalty shootout for a bonus point.

The boys in blue were at it from the off in the first 30 seconds, and finally got a reward in the form of a beautiful Sam Mather finish in the 11th minute; a sly, slow shot across the box to the far post after dancing through several Rovers players on the left side of the box. 0-1.

The League 2 side would fight back though, scoring their equaliser in the 24th minute through Joe Sbarra; a poorly headed cross that cruelly deflected off the sliding body of Habeeb Ogunneye at RB and past keeper Dermot Mee. 1-1.

Even at half time, Rovers took the initiative in the second half scoring through Ephraim Yeboah in the 50th minute, with the right winger scoring an easy finish after Billy Sharp's shot ricocheted off the right goalpost. 2-1.

Midfielder George Broadbent then made it 3-1 in the 65th minute after a howler of a clearance from Mee straight to the Doncaster player, who expertly lobbed the marooned goalie.

United are known for their fightbacks though, and that was the case here. Wiley winger Ethan Ennis reined the game back in to 3-2 in the 72nd minute after a nice ball steal from Sam Mather and a FIFA-style pass across the box for a tap in.

Classic United appeared in the final seconds, with Louis Jackson - the suffering CB against City's U21s - scoring off a scrambled corner in the final seconds. The assist? Goalkeeper Dermot Mee, who had ran up and fluffed his own shot into the path of Jackson. 3-3, full time.

Thus, it was penalties o'clock. United won out 5-3 on the night, with Sam Mather scoring first, Dermot Mee saving against goalscorer George Broadbent, and then Ethan Wheatley, Jack Fletcher, Harry Amass and Gabriele Biancheri all burying their shots.

No Under-21 side has ever won the EFL Trophy, but after two games United sit top of the group on five points - all but guaranteed to go through. A final game in November against Huddersfield awaits, and then the draw for the knockout stages will be announced too.
