Ah, Middlemarch. George Eliot’s magnum opus. The mid-nineties gave us not only the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but also the BBC adaptation of Middlemarch. It’s very well acted, but did only moderately well. It certainly hasn’t become a cultural touchstone like the 1995 P&P (which got a shoutout this summer in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie).
I think part of the reason it didn’t catch on with viewers in the same way is that Middlemarch doesn’t really have a central love story. There are 3 love stories woven through the narrative. 2 of them end pretty well, 1 ends in a disastrous, miserable marriage between a couple who seemed well-suited at first, but then turn out not to be.
Plus, there are multiple other interlocking plots which are not romantic. And an awful lot of social commentary, and moral commentary, and class commentary, and commentary on the Great Reform Act of 1832 (which didn’t bring about universal male suffrage, but did substantially expand the pool of men qualified to vote. And wiped out most of the rotten boroughs). Link with more info on the act below.
Middlemarch was published in 1871, but set in 1832, to dramatize the Great Reform Act. Interestingly, George Eliot was only born in 1819, so would’ve been a child of 13 when the GRA was passed. But evidently as an adult she came to realize that the GRA had been a seismic event, and she could set her magnum opus during the first election under the new rules, for maximum impact of the GRA upon her characters.
There are many George Eliot novels I find more readable, mainly because they focus on one romantic pairing and a few other characters. Or in Silas Marner, one adoptive father to an abandoned child non-romantic pairing. But I have re-read Middlemarch several times since first reading it at 17.
It’s something I have to dip into only 2 or 3 chapters at a time. Otherwise it can be indigestible. With the vast cast of interlocking characters all doing different things (which don’t always seem at the time to connect to each other. Although late in the book you see how carefully Eliot laid out her plot threads). But Eliot managed to say a LOT about British society in the 19th century, and the problems in said society, in the guise of fiction.
Trivia: Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll was one of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s children. Probably their most interesting child, from a cultural point of view. Also, when her husband was Governor General of Canada, he named Lake Louise after her. Big tourist attraction in the Rockies. Anyway, Princess Louise was a patron of the arts, was supportive of girls education (even though she didn’t get a terrific education herself), a huge literature fan, and an even huger George Eliot fan.
But because of George Eliot’s disgraceful private life, living in sin with a man who had an estranged wife, Princess Louise was never allowed to meet her. Even a minor royal like herself could not be seen to be condoning adultery by being introduced socially to an acknowledged adulteress.
So Princess Louise regretfully fangirled Eliot from afar. Didn’t stop her from interrogating mutual acquaintances as to what Eliot was like in person, or going off on soliloquies about Eliot’s genius as a writer (which of course got back to Eliot, as Louise had no doubt intended). But it did mean Louise could never meet her literary crush in person.
The Wikipedia article on Princess Louise fails to note the fact that her husband was probably gay, or at least bisexual. Which might have been another reason her marriage started happily and then became unhappy. Quite apart from the shock to the system to her husband, the heir to a dukedom when they first married, a Duke later in their marriage. But he wasn’t royal, so in spite of his importance within the nobility, he was always second in precedence to his wife the princess. That apparently caused some other friction. Because if you’re either a duke or the heir to a dukedom, you’re not used to being (comparatively) unimportant.
The Great Reform Act probably wasn’t that revolutionary in its reforms. It was “great” only in that it was the first real act of reform. And badly needed. But it was symbolic, plus set the stage for further reform acts which made the British House of Commons significantly more accountable to voters. Including, eventually, female voters. Very eventually.
Lake Louise, in Alberta, named after Princess Louise, Queen Victoria’s most interesting child. Glacier-fed, so really fucking cold even when I just dipped my toes in. In summer. But a view I’d grown up seeing on postcards and calendars, which was somehow still overwhelming in person. Even though I already knew exactly what the damn lake looked like when I finally got around to visiting it.
I wanted to say that under no circumstances would I have given men the chance of saying that I sought money under the pretext of seeking something else.

God I’m watching that SNL in the 80s documentary and lorne(yet again was such an asshole), the way he treated Victoria Jackson is despicable, “you know, you’re more than disposable”, he hated that poor woman for no reason, she deserved better, she was very lucky to have Dennis Miller as a friend and he enjoyed doing Weekend Update with her

#2648 - Teloschistes velifer - Sail-bearing Hair Lichen
A bark-dwelling lichen found in Australia, New Zealand, and South America. 'Velifer' means 'Sail-bearing' and refers to the large lobes held above the rest of the organism.
First described by the Australian minister and lichenologist Francis Wilson (1832–1903) in 1889. He noted the rare lichen to prefer small twigs of the bush Hymenanthera banksii, where it could often cover an entire side.
Wilson made collecting trips from Melbourne to Lorne, Lakes Entrance, Ferntree Gully, Brisbane, Sydney and Suva, Fiji. Between 1897 and 1900 he wrote at least 20 articles on lichens. The lichen genus Franwilsia was named after him in 2014.
After his death his collections were purchased by the National Herbarium of New South Wales and the National Herbarium of Victoria, but when the latter collection was sent to Italy to be studied it was lost in transit and never recovered.

Food in Alberta
Alberta was named after Princess Louise Caroline Alberta (1848–1939), the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. Princess Louise was the wife of John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, Governor General of Canada (1878–83). Lake Louise and Mount Alberta were also named in her honour.
The name "Alberta" is a feminine Latinized form of Albert, the name of Princess Louise's father, the Prince Consort (cf. Medieval Latin: Albertus, masculine) and its Germanic cognates, ultimately derived from the Proto-Germanic language *Aþalaberhtaz (compound of "noble" + "bright/famous").

Letter from princess Alix of Hesse to her brother Ernst Ludwig, August 3rd 1887.
"Tuesday evening My darling old Ernie, | am sure you are quite shocked that | have not written to you again, but | have now really not much time to myself, as | am doing more lessons now, and go out often with Grandmama, bathe every other day & get painted often. To-day we 2, Uncle Bertie and Eddy were with Grandmama, whilst she [k]nighted people. Nothing very funny happened. We saw dear Aunt Alix and the three Girls before Luncheon, as Aunty came for Tuxen. — We do not see much of them or the Prussian Cousins, and that is a great bore.— To-morrow Aunt Helen and her two Children come. — These days we have been reduced to only four. - We went with the Connaught family as far as Portsmouth, on Tuesday. Aunt Marie with three Girls, Aunt Louise, Uncle Lorne & Aunt B’s Baby joined us on the Alberta. Poor Aunt Louischen seemed very sad to leave, and even little Daisy had a tear in her eye. — | hope that the Books, Forgetmenot, (for writing Autographes &c in) for you and Victoria will arrive in time for the messenger, but | am much afraid that they will not. | shall not write anything in it, in case you wish to give it away — To-day is Tino’s Birth Day.
On Saturday we saw the Empress of Austria, and | was perfectly enchanted with her. She has a most lovely, tall & thin figure (50 years old) and such a pretty face & soft voice.
We were all so happy to hear of Ludwigs appointment. — | suppose he will travel with Georgie, who leaves on the 11th. — Uncle Arthur also goes nextweek. — Grandmama is very buisy trying to learn some words and sentences in Hindustani, but always feels horribly shy, when she tells it the Indians. To-day her sentence was about their Relations. | have also been writing out some words and sentences, and enclose them, as | think it might amuse You. — The other day, to our great amusement we saw both the Indians, after Tea, t[eJaring down the hill, then washing their hands inthe last fountain and then having a race down to the sea. Of course old fatty could not get on very fast.
Now, With many 1000 Kisses | remain Ever your loving little Sister Alix All Cousins send you much love — How is Sandro getting on? Do you go often to Jugenheim? Many messages to Uncle Henry.— It is still very hot here".

@a-musing-mixologist sent: i’m in love with being noticed and afraid of being seen. (Kid fer Killer?)
[ from STICK SEASON: WE'LL ALL BE HERE FOREVER. ( accepting! ) ]
ㅤ⠀The deck of the Victoria was quiet in the early morning hours. The sun was just starting to peek over the edge of the horizon, causing the sky to shift from navy to royal blue, tinted with soft, deep lavenders and baby pinks. The breeze that guided the ship was from the south west, driving them forward slowly. Wire was at the helm, silent and steady, leaving Killer to have a few scant moments of peace before he got to work tending to the crew with breakfast. Maybe something from home this time? He had some bacon curing in salt, and Lorne sausage, maybe he’d fix up some black pudding and haggis, too. They were running low on scones- and the supplies for him to make said scones, so they’d do with toast, and some eggs-
ㅤ⠀That is, until his captain- his oldest friend- spoke, startling him out of his reverie with the sky.
ㅤ⠀His head turned, studying Kid as he settled in at his side. ❝Feelin’ a wee bit introspective this mornin’, aye?❞ Killer murmured softly, brows furrowing behind the helmet. Fingers reached up, unclipping the mechanism that held it in place, letting the two halves fall into his hands for the moment. The feeling of the sea breeze on his skin, through his hair, was always a treat. Kid could be crass, could be harsh, but he was far smarter than anyone outside of the crew gave him credit for. Hotheaded, too-
ㅤ⠀But weren’t they all, just a touch? Being a pirate meant being crass, meant throwing caution to the wind when necessary. Lips curving into a small smile, he turned away from studying the horizon to lean instead against the bannister, arms crossing over his chest so that he could actually see Eustass. ❝Wha’s on yer mind, then?❞ Came the soft question; had he had another awful dream? Another sleepless night?

Coming back around to this after reblogging yesterday! I got sucked into reading about "Princess Louisa," because she's actually kind of interesting! "Princess Louisa" is Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll (Louisa Caroline Alberta, sixth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert). This portrait is dated 1881, just one year before the date on the Troy Messenger article.
Princess Louise in Venice, 1 April 1881. Vianelli Brothers - Royal Collection Object 2903653
Princess Louise was a talented artist and dancer, outspoken, a feminist, and most importantly for her time and place, distinctly out of tune with the royal world. She was the first royal to marry a "commoner" (John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll AKA John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne) since 1515. After their marriage, John Campbell went on to become the fourth Governor General of Canada, which is how the two of them ended up living there. At the time of the Troy Messenger article, Princess Louise and her husband were all but estranged; they initially had a happy marriage but drifted apart relatively quickly. Some historians feel it was because the couple did not have any children. However, Princess Louise also kept herself busy with not only her official duties but her individual interests, sometimes going incognito as "Mrs. Campbell" so that she could walk freely on foot and interact in everyday places with everyday people. She didn't seem to care for any distinctions between people due to race, nationality, or social status.
Princess Louise was injured in a sleigh accident (alongside her husband and two attendants) 14 February 1880. Though the visible injuries were minor, she was knocked unconscious and severely concussed, leading to lingering effects of the injury. She left for England in 1881, likely to appease her mother, Queen Victoria; her injuries had been downplayed by the press and in letters home, but suddenly cancelling appointments following the accident and being unable to resume her usual routine was suspicious both in Canada and England. It was likely this downplaying of her injuries and previous ill-will toward Princess Louise for her outspoken feminism and departure from royal norms that led to the poetically snarky Troy Messenger article. That April, she had been in England for the marriage of her brother, Prince Leopold. She sailed back at the end of May on the Sarmatian, and her return was more succinctly detailed by the Wisconsin State Journal.
Wisconsin State Journal, 05 Jun 1882, Page 1 "Princess Louise arrived at Quebec, Sunday night, in the Sarmatian. She was met with ceremony by her husband the Governor General, and other officials. A rain storm broke up the shore festivities. Louise is in good health, and rode in an open carriage to the citadel, despite the rain. The vice regal party will go salmon fishing in a week."
Follow-up articles were interested in the circumstances of Louise's trip on the Sarmatian. In the Wood County Reporter, 22 Jun 1882, Page 1:
"Of the Princess Louise's recent departure from England the London World says: "The Princess Louise was accompanied to the station in London by the Prince and Princess of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. So far so good; but it has been a theme of comment that no member of the royal family was found to escort the princess to Liverpool. It has also been remarked that the names of those selected to accompany her royal highness are distinguished by a total absence of that social rank which is generally looked for in the personnel of a royal household."
There are also several articles from October of that year detailing a surprise inspection Princess Louise made of the Sarmatian's steerage, following her being told of abusive and inadequate conditions for the emigrants there. Moral of the story: Crappy newspapers trying to sell copies (or today, clicks) have always posted ill-informed, emotionally-charged non-stories. If it sounds wanky, it probably is - look for the story that's not being told.
I am now determined to find a way to use "ice cream freezer" as an insult again.
