white americans will say "that doesn't count as British" about tikka masala then cite burritos as evidence of the superiority of their food.
white americans will be like oh british food is so unseasoned and underspiced and then talk as if taco bell is extremely flavourful. this is true I've seen it happen multiple times.
#red said#look man sorry we're in the same boat here. northern european traditional foods are uhhhhhhhh salted and peppered meat heavy#but they'll be like 'THAT'S NOT BRITISH THAT'S IMMIGRANT COOKING' about everything that isn't that#like yeah man! so's everything else! this is an island nation! we have 4 native ingredients!#our culture is a patchwork of those who live in it! many of whom are immigrants!#you MEAN. 'white people food is bland'. but let's not pretend that a white American diet without food from other immigrant cultures#or indigenous north American foods#is meaningfully different to northern European white people food. or British or Irish food.#it's weird. i have eaten in ohio. white people aren't seasoning things any more strongly there than here.#also frankly i have eaten in ohio and they're very proud of their chili and it literally tastes of nothing. put some spices in that fucker.#we colonised India and started eating British versions of curry. you colonised north Mexico and started eating underseasoned burritos.#same shit different contexts. when you're a settler colonialist nation and a nation of migrants you uhhhh.#you don't have a singular food culture. in fact most places don't have a singular food culture. but specifically in this case.#if your national identity is so tied to plundering other cultures for everything you want to steal#then it's pretty hard. to retain a connection to any kind of indigenous unifying tradition. in terms of food art or culture#because HOW COLONIALISM WORKS includes the absorption and bastardisation of colonised cultures#from kedgeree to rock n roll to picasso to isaac newton#that's not to say 'the concept of curry belongs to Britain' or 'the concept of tacos belongs to the US'#it's to say. there's no way to divide out culture assimilated from immigrants or colonised cultures cleanly from the colonising culture#burritos and kung pow chicken are USAmerican food. chicken tikka masala is British food#not because we're erasing or ignoring that those foods were created by indigenous Mexicans or Chinese or Indian immigrants#but because they're a big part of the contemporary diet and because they're made in the cultural context of the US and Britain respectively
