1-15 for the meta writer ask 😊
Oh boy. Here we go! 😬
1 - Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?
Currently I'm working on two fics: The Godslayer Project and What No Shackles Can Keep.
The Godslayer Project is a post-canon fic set in my Parallax 'verse. The focus will be on Sundari integrating and navigating her place in jujutsu society both as an instructor and a working sorcerer. There's a canonical plot thread that inspired this story but because I'm guarding it jealously for no other reason than I want to actually finish it before releasing it? Well, let's just say Kenjaku's plans did not die with him. What I love most about this fic is the absolute creative freedom to write a story that's wholly original and outside of the canon events. True canon divergence. Inner peace.
What No Shackles Can Keep takes place during the prologue period of Beast of No Nation, during Nadja and Sukuna's time together during the Heian Era. Nadja makes a decision that changes the course of her destiny, but there are consequences. What I love most about this project is that it's told in first-person from Nadja's perspective. So you're privy to all her thoughts and motivations...and secrets.
2 - Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.
I am looking forward to writing my new villain, Helena Grinspoon. I'm trying out some new villainy and antagonist mechanics for this story, and Sundari is on the backfoot for this one so I'm practicing tension-building too. Lots of cool fight scenes, artistic amounts of bloodshed and gore, and female rage and madness abound.
3 - What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)
I have so many of these kinds of scenes in my head but the one that has been on repeat has been the moment Sukuna realizes that Nadja is more vulnerable than he thought and he endeavors to protect her. I love writing those two being down bad for each other.
4 - Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)
From What No Shackles Can Keep:
And so I stayed, and while he never asked me to, I watched as he slowly molded a place for me in his life: an extra seat at his dinner table, new things in his garden particularly suited to my tastes; he even sent for imports of spices I’d mentioned offhandedly when we discussed food, one of his favorite subjects…and once, a beautiful winter kimono that I knew had cost him dearly to have made.
5 - What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?
Well...uh. I guess Sundari? She's kind of become my embodiment of justice for my teenage self idk.
6 - What character do you have the most fun writing?
Nadja, as usual. And Sundari too. But Nadja is like slipping into my favorite coat. She's familiar and easy to write for, especially in first person.
7 - What do you think are the characteristics of your personal writing style? Would others agree?
Languid prose, great dialogue, and intriguing original characters from what I've been told. My best friend said I'm like the most polished writer in my group. My editor says I'm an engaging storyteller.
8 - Is what you like to write the same as what you like to read?
"If there is a book you want to read and it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." --Toni Morrison
That's a no. I write what I want to read. But I also find that there's a lot of kindred spirits in the fandom who write similar themes and dynamics to me.
9 - Are you more of a drabble or a longfic kind of writer? Pantser or plotter? Do you wish you were the other?
I'm a plotting longfic writer. I wish I could write drabbles but I have too much to say and I love writing grand fight scenes and adventures. I can write shorter stories, I just prefer not to.
10 - How would you describe your writing process?
Stressful. I spend more time outlining and editing than just writing. I have a very bad streak of perfectionism when it comes to my writing so I tend to get in my own way.
11 - What do you envy in other writers?
I'd be lying to deny I envy other writers but I envy other writers' ability to build up an actual steady readership. I don't know why I haven't been able to find my audience yet, but I have a sneaking suspicion I'm going to be one of those writers who ironically gets popular posthumously. Sounds morbid but I gotta laugh because that's the way my luck tends to turn.
12 - Do you want your writing to be famous?
I used to want that but now I just want it to be enjoyed by whoever is bothering to read it aside from myself.
13 - Do you share your writing online? (Drop a link!) Do you have projects you’ve kept just for yourself?
I have a lot of projects that will never see the light of day or are strictly for my own enjoyment [my Sukuna selfship fic, for one] but I share my writing here and on AO3. Links are in my pinned post!
14 - At what point in writing do you come up with a title?
When I've got enough of the story down to feel the vibe. Then it's rifling through song lyrics and poetry to find the perfect title to fit the vibe.
15 - Which is harder: titles or summaries (or tags)?
Summaries for sure. Man just read to find out.
Thanks for the asks, anon! This was fun!
