Please imagine a pithy title about fresh starts here.
(crossposted from Patreon)
Coming into 2024, I had big plans for how I was going to get back on track and get back to posting once a week and yeah, obviously, that hasn’t happened.
But what I have been doing is looking at my Patreon and at my own projects and figuring out some things I need to do differently. Last April, I changed my nom de plume because I wanted a fresh start. Now it’s time to give this entire Patreon project a refresh.
Here’s what’s happened so far:
Deleted my old A.F. Linley website and gave up the domain; the cost for hosting has risen by $200/year and I wasn’t using it as much as I thought I would back in 2018. Also I kept getting spam emails through the contact page.
Took down my Smashwords account; the single title I had managed to self-publish, a short story collection called Creeps, Ghouls and Jewels, had some serious formatting issues that it was not going to be worth the time/money to correct. Plus, I’m not happy with the changes that have come since Smashwords merged with Draft2Digital. (I’m considering moving to Payhip for future self-pubbed titles but that’s a discussion for a different post.)
I’m starting the process of taking down my Redbubble shop and....Okay, actually, I might have done that already? I just went to grab a link to the site in case anyone wanted to order a Moonicorns t-shirt before I deactivated but uh, it looks like it might’ve deactivated itself? Anyway, merch isn’t the right direction for me at this time, but I’ve still got all the actual designs and I really do like the “Finishing Things is Hard” logo, so I’m definitely going to hang onto that and slap that onto some stuff at a different print-on-demand site in the future.
Here’s what’s happening next:
New posting schedule: Starting in April, patrons will receive one short non-fiction post every week (500-1k words) and a piece of fiction every month (2-2.5k words). Oddments posts will continue to be free to read, but these take a decent amount of research and will be sporadic, basically happening around patron-only posts.
Revised patron tier perks: Getting rid of physical rewards and adding more digital ones. More details to come.
Current and long-time patrons: Thank you for sticking around while I get my shit together. I say that frequently. I mean it every single time.
Potential new patrons: Hello. I have just met you, and I love you. My name is Ethan, I live in a 200-year-old house and I’m writing a novel called The Lion’s Paw. It’s set in 1925 and is about an immortal queer disaster woman and what happens when 400+ years of terrible decisions catches up with her.
(I will neither confirm nor deny that she was inspired by H.G. Wells from Warehouse 13.) (Yes I will confirm it, she totally was.)
There are séances and ghostly possession and psychics, there is historical romance, and psychological horror, there are haunted houses and artists behaving badly and a lot of ladies making out.
I post about my writing process and all the weird little historical niches that pop up during my research. Frequent topics include:
Spiritualism
Cryptids
Historical curiosities
Medical quackery
Weird tech
General oddball occurrences and serendipitous intersections of history, folklore, and culture
And sometimes when I’m really bored I write short fiction via random prompts.
If any of that appeals to you, please consider subscribing! I’d love to have you along for this journey and my caffeine habit needs all the support it can get.

Making Love on a Monday
Beau Simpson x OC Ryan Reagan story
Warnings- Smut
Otis Redding sang softly through the speaker and the soft glow of string lights lit the backyard as Beau Simpson and his best friend Solomon Bates carried the last of the dirty dishes into the kitchen and sat them on the counter. “I’m sorry we have to rush off but we told the sitter we wouldn’t be late since it’s a Monday night and there is school tomorrow” Solomon’s wife Muriel stated leaning in to give Beau a hug. “No, it’s alright I completely understand. I'm just glad we could finally find a time to get together. I know my schedule isn’t the easiest to work around" said Beau’s girlfriend Ryan.
Ryan Reagan had been a police officer for long enough that she was used to the craziness of having alternating days off but it made it hard to socialize with people that worked normal 9-5 jobs who had regular weekends off. She and Beau had been trying for several weeks to find a day that would work with Solomon and Muriel’s busy lives to have dinner.
“Ryan thank you for a delicious meal and for taking such good care of this one” Solomon said, gesturing to Beau. “It’s nice to see him so happy” he continued as he and Muriel were walking out the front door towards their car.
“You’re welcome for both” Ryan said, wrapping an arm around Beau’s waist. “He’s an easy one to take care of” she said, laying her head against his chest.
“See you tomorrow Sol” Beau said watching as the couple closed their car doors and drove away. “That was fun, I’m glad we could do that. I like spending time with some of my favorite people.” He said as he closed the front door. “Now why don’t you pour yourself some more wine and go sit out back while I clean up the kitchen.”
“Beau you don’t have to do that, I’ll get it later.”
“Nope, not gonna argue about it. Go” he said pointing towards the backyard.
“Yes sir Admiral” she said, giving Beau a mock salute while she topped off her wine glass.
“I’ll join you when I’m done” he says as he begins to fill the dishwasher. Once the last of the dirty dishes have been taken care of and the dishwasher started, Beau heads outside and finds Ryan sitting on the porch swing."Penny for your thoughts" he says sitting down next to her. Ryan turns to look at him smiling as she says "I'm just thinking about how happy I am and how there is really only one thing that would make me happier right now. Beau reaches to move a piece of hair from Ryan’s forehead as he says "oh really, what would that be?" She shifts in her seat and gazes into his eyes before leaning over kissing him on the lips saying "stay with me tonight."
Beau responds by kissing her passionately and pulling her onto his lap. Ryan's hands are running through Beau's hair and she rocks her hips forward, she can feel how hard he is. Wrapping his arms tighter around Ryans waist, Beau stands and carries Ryan inside the house. He puts her down just inside the doorway of her bedroom and backs up slightly. Beau is silently giving her the opportunity to change her mind. As if confirming Beau’s question Ryan slowly lifts the hem of her t-shirt over her head and throws it on the floor. She reaches a hand out to Beau and he takes it as he crosses the threshold of her bedroom pulling Ryan close. Beau starts kissing down Ryan's neck, taking the opportunity to nibble lightly on her collarbone.
Ryan pulls Beau’s shirt tail out of the waistband of his dark washed jeans pushing it up his broad torso and over his head. She NEEDS to get it off him and feel his bare chest against hers. They kiss again, Beau nips at Ryans bottom lip and then licks at it before entering her mouth- their tongues dancing. When they finally break apart for air Ryan backs towards her bed, never breaking eye contact with Beau- slowly she goes to unhook her bra and tosses it at Beau before sliding her shorts and panties down her legs.
He catches the bra easily and his eyes darken as he takes in Ryan standing before him completely naked. “I’ve always known you were the most beautiful woman in the world but this confirms it. The way my body reacts to you should be illegal darlin '. I wanna take my time with you, taste every inch of you but if I don’t get inside of you soon I think I just might die.” Beau says as he unhooks his belt and jeans while moving towards Ryan.
“Well we wouldn’t want that to happen now would we” she says, slipping her hand into his boxer, grabbing his hardened length and pumping once, then twice before sliding his pants down his legs. Both completely bare, Beau picks Ryan up and places her on her bed and climbs on top of her. He’s kissing down her neck, slowly inching his way towards her breasts where his hands have been kneading the soft globes. Ryan moans as his mouth finds one of her nipples letting his tongue roll around the bud.
Ryan's hips rock up and Beau’s hard dick twitches against her stomach at the movement. “Beau I need you. PLEASE”
“Alright, let me get a condom.”
“Top drawer of my night stand, I’m like the Boy Scouts- always prepared”
“Well I’m about to show you how much I appreciate you being prepared.” He says while opening the foil packet and rolling the condom down his throbbing dick. Once covered he rubs the tip at her entrance before sliding in. “Honey I think I may have actually died and gone to heaven. You feel so good, so tight.” He said thrusting his hips harder and harder after giving Ryan time to adjust to him being inside of her. Ryan’s nails scratch his back as he continues to fuck her.
In a surprising move Ryan rolls Beau over onto his back so that she is on top riding him. Beau’s hands grip her hips tighter the faster she rocks, their moans getting louder. “Honey I’m getting close, I need you to come first.” He said moving his hands from her hips to her tits, squeezing them as he bucks his hips to meet Ryan’s movement. Ryan’s pace gets frenzied as she nears her release, placing her hands over Beau’s and moaning loudly. Ryan can feel the wave of pleasure washing over her as she leans over to kiss Beau. He flips Ryan over so he is once again on top and thrusts again and again and again until he reaches his own high.
“That was definitely worth the wait” Beau said, kissing Ryan's shoulder as he rolls to his side. She doesn't respond, but instead turns her head away from Beau's gaze. "You're not having second thoughts are you?" Beau asks with a worried expression on his face.
“No of course not, I just….I…I’ve…ugh” she groans in frustration and rubbing her hand over her face.
“Hey hey hey…..honey you’re making me nervous. I’m gonna need you to tell me what’s wrong.”
Ryan sits up against the headboard pulling the sheet up over her naked body and says “I’ve just never had someone love me so completely for who I am, flaws and all. The few relationships I’ve had I’ve never felt good enough- like I wasn’t skinny enough or pretty enough and you just have this way of making me feel like no one else matters.”
“That’s because you’re it for me Ryan. I’m sorry those other guys made you feel that way because you're so gorgeous and the fact that you don’t realize how gorgeous you are only adds to it. I am so crazy in love with you and if I’m lucky I’ll get to spend the rest of my life showing you just how special you are.”
"I'm not sure what I did to deserve you Beau, I really don't. You're it for me too, I can't see myself with anyone else. You just make loving you so easy" Ryan said, scooting closer to Beau and snuggling into his chest. "It took me too long to find you and I'm afraid I'll wake up one morning and find out this has all been a dream."
"Darlin, go to sleep-I promise I'm not going anywhere...there is literally no place I'd rather be than with you."

Best Years but Not in the Same Way (30)
Calum Hood x Reader
Previous Part
I’m sorry it took me 3 years to continue this story. i hope someone still wants to read this story. enjoy!
Masterlist
-
After all these Long Distances drama, finally he came home to LA. But you didn’t immediately meet him because you were busy at studio, helping Justin again with his song called Forever. You know Calum didn’t really like it but you did it anyway, because it was your work and you like to help friend.
It’s 10 p.m. and you texted Calum.
You said goodbye to the people on the studio, and also Justin. You just waved at him and left the building. Second time you met him still awkward, at least for you.
-
You checked your schedule at your laptop and today was the day you had a video meeting with Andrew Watt. He invited you to help him and his friends to write a song. He didn’t mention who his friends was but you guessed one of them is Ali Tamposi.
You waited for him to call you and you also eat your breakfast. Not long enough he finally called you. You answered his calls and his face was on your screen alongside with Ali, your guessed was right, Ryan Tedder and also you saw someone very familiar. It was Luke.
“Aye Palvin.” Andrew greeted you. You smiled and waved to the camera. “I asked her to help us writing because… i didn’t know anyone else.” He laughed and we also laughed.
You furrowed your eyebrows. “Luke hi!? Why are you here?” You asked him. “Is Luke going solo?” Then you asked the rest of them hoping they would answer.
“No I’m not. It’s 5sos’ project.” Luke gave you a smile and you returned it.
“Cool!” you said. “So, thank you so much for letting me be the part of this project.”
They’re all happy seeing you joining this meeting.
“So i have wrote the lyric and i want to share with you all.” Ryan began to play chords on his guitar and sang the lyric. After he finished, he continued to explain. “The concept is where you hurt someone and you’re kind of making them a promise that although i’ve hurt you and there’s like this dark cloud over us right now, I’m gonna give you the best years of my life.”
You nodded.
“Wow i think it’s a beautiful romantic promise and statement to make.” Luke nodded also.
After hours and hours passed by, we finished the verses, the pre chorus. And then Andrew started played the guitar to match the lyrics. “This is so beautiful. Guys thank you so much for helping. I’ll take it from here.” Meeting is over and it was 6 P.M. right now. You called Calum right away.
“Hello?” Said Calum from the other side. He sounded different.
“Hello Cal,” you greeted him happily even though he didn’t respond the same. “Where are you? I just finished meeting with Andrew.”
“Oh. I’m outside. I’m meeting my friends.” He answered as short as he could.
You sighed slowly. His attitude became like this since he knew you’ve been working with Justin for his upcoming album. Almost a month since early august. On one side you glad you fixed the friendship you had with Justin. Because deep down you just want to live in peace and had no more hate feeling to him. And also you felt a strong connection with Justin when you wrote songs together. Not in a romantic way. But the other side, it tore Calum apart. You knew the consequences of having Justin again in your life and you still took it anyway. And now look what you have done. Slowly you and Calum distance to each other.
“Oh, okay. How’s the Teeth promo doing?” You asked him again try to reduce your ego.
“Great, it was great.”
You tried to hold your tears. “Alright, have fun Cali.” You decided to end the conversation because you couldn’t handle his bitterness.
“Bye.”
You ended up crying on your bed without him knowing your hearts hurt so bad.
-
Today is September 1st and you got an email from Justin. It was an invitation to his wedding day with Hailey on September 30. You sighed as you saw this digital invitation shown so beautifully on your laptop screen. Suddenly you mind did a flashback to the sick old memory. But it dispersed when you got a video call from Michael.
“Hey hey miss B,” Michael greeted. “What you doing girl.”
You grinned confusely. “Hey dude, just sit on my couch doing nothing. What’s up Mike?” When you asked him, out from nowhere, Calum joined the video call.
“Hey Cal.” Mike waved his hand to Calum.
Calum frowned. “What’s with this meeting, dude?” He sounded almost pissed with Michael because he had been avoided any video call or meeting with you directly.
“Stop it both of you.” Michael snapped. “I knew you two had been avoiding each other for over a month. I love you two and i don’t want anything bad happened to you guys. Cal you better make it up or i will be so mad at you. Alright, I’m out. Bye.” He left the call and it leave you only with Calum.
You gulped. You could see his faced were so pissed. You were so ready if he said he wanted to break up.
“Cal…,” you paused. “What happened to us? We haven’t seen each other for a month.”
“I’m busy with the promo. We’ve been doing this for years, Saara. I’m busy with my band and you’re busy at the studio, that’s it.” He avoided any eye contact with you.
You wiped your tears. “Don’t you Saara me, Cal.” Your heart shattered when he called you by name. “I knew we’ve been doing this for years, but we communicated through calls, video calls, we talked.” “If you have something to talk to me please tell me now.”
His face turned into sad. “Fine. I still can’t accept the fact you still involved with Justin. After all this years he hurted you, i waited for you to heal your feelings from him, just for you to go back with him?”
“I’m not going to back to him. I’m with you now, Cal. Please. It was just an album work i swear to God. I’m returning favors to Poo Bear. I owe him so much until i am today, that’s why i accepted his request to be part of Justin’s album. That’s it.” You explained to him hardly because you were crying.
“I’m outside.”
You left the laptop and opened the door immediately. You saw him stood there with his phone on his left hand and a bucket of roses on his right hand. You hugged him immediately and cried on his chest. “Please don’t leave me.” You said it while sobbing.
“If i leave you i wouldn’t give you this flowers.” You pulled the hug and you took the flowers. “I love you so much that i don’t want to lose you again. and I’m sorry this situation went too far.”
You nodded and kisses him.

By: Ryan Burge
Published: May 8, 2024
I've always been a bit fascinated by people who live with inherent tensions in their lives. For example, I reside in a small, rural town that will likely vote overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024—probably by forty points or more. Yet, there are some hardcore liberals here. I know a few of them. They advocate strongly for their beliefs, aware that their efforts might not significantly sway the majority. Many spend considerable time in St. Louis, about an hour's drive away, seeking a cultural environment more aligned with their values.
I’ve written about this before - people who are just in a weird situation. Most notable, I put together a paper about people who both identify as lesbian/gay/bisexual but also say that they are evangelicals on surveys. It was published with the title, “To be of one mind?: integrating an LGB orientation with evangelical beliefs” at Politics, Groups, and Identities. Long story short - these folks are more religious than other LGB people but not quite as active as non-LGB evangelicals.
We have a term for this in political science, it’s called being cross pressured. I consider this piece by Diana Mutz to be one of the foundational works in understanding the concept. The field of religion and politics presents me with a whole bunch of combinations of folks who would clearly fall into this cross pressured category. I wanted to focus on one today that may be the most incongruent - people who identify as atheist or agnostic on the religion question but then say that they are Republicans.
I don’t think I need to provide a huge theoretical justification for why this is a weird combination of factors. The Republican party is basically 85% Christians right now. So to be an atheist who also identifies with the GOP puts you in a really small subset of the population. Let me start by just showing you that - this is the share of Democrats and Republicans who identify as atheist/agnostic over the last several election cycles.
Even back in 2008, atheists and agnostics were much more at home in the Democratic coalition than with the GOP. Twelve percent of all Democrats were atheist/agnostic compared to only 3% of Republicans. Over time, both numbers have increased but the trajectory is completely different. For Democrats, that percentage has risen from 12% to 21% between 2008 and 2022. For Republicans, it’s much more modest - from 3% to 5%. One in twenty Republicans are atheists or agnostics. It’s one in five Democrats. There are four Democrat atheist/agnostics for every Republican.
I think part of the reason for this finding is not the fact that Republicans are just a whole lot more religious than Democrats, it’s that Republicans just don’t like that atheist/agnostic label that much. So, they may be functionally non-religious but they would never want to call themselves a term that they believe to be repugnant like atheist or agnostic. The empirical evidence for that is pretty clear when you limit the sample to people who report their religious attendance as seldom or never and then calculate the religious composition of those low attenders.
For Democrats who attend less than once a year, a majority are nones - 35% are atheists/agnostics and nearly the same share are nothing in particular. That percentage has grown by about ten percentage points since 2008. Only 27% of never/seldom attending Democrats say that they are Protestant or Catholic today.
However, those same figures for Republicans who are low attenders are much different. Among those who are seldom/never attenders, 56% of them say that they are Protestant or Catholic - that’s twice the share as the Democrats. Meanwhile, only 11% of low attending Republicans are atheist/agnostic - compared to 35% of Democrats. Pretty strong evidence here that when Democrats are far from religion, they have little hesitancy in embracing the atheist/agnostic label. Not so for Republicans.
But let me take that a step further and add another question to the mix - religious importance. I calculated the share of Democrats and Republicans who said that they were atheist/agnostic broken down by level of religious attendance and religious importance. This is where my thinking crystallizes quite a bit.
Obviously there’s not much happening in the top right of these heatmaps - those are folks who score both high on religious importance and religious attendance. Almost none of them say that they are atheist/agnostic. The real action is happening on the left side of the graph and the color coding tells a lot of the story. Look at the bottom left square, specifically. Those are people who never attend religious services and say that religion is not at all important. Among Republicans, 33% of those in this box are atheist/agnostic, it’s 58% of Democrats.
Those huge gaps are evident across a number of combinations of importance and attendance. For instance, among those Democrats who say that they seldom attend religious services and religion is not at all important - 40% are atheists/agnostics. It’s only 24% of Republicans in that same square. In fact, there’s not a single combination of these two factors in which a Republican is more likely than a Democrat to identify as atheist/agnostic.
Okay - I think it’s pretty well established that even if you control for other questions related to religion, a Republican is just less likely to identify as an atheist or agnostic compared to a Democrat. There’s some clear hesitancy there. But I was curious about something else - are Republican atheists/agnostics that different politically than the Republican party as a whole? And, just for the fun of it, I did the same thing for the Democrats. The area of inquiry was questions about abortion. That seems like a topic that could be deeply impacted by religious convictions, so I wanted to see if an atheist Republican was less conservative than the average member of the GOP.
The data on this is pretty convincing, atheist/agnostic Republicans are more moderate on abortion across a variety of scenarios. For instance, while only 30% of all Republicans would favor a woman having access to an abortion for any reason, that share rises to 51% of atheist/agnostic Republicans. Only ten percent of the latter group favors a complete ban on abortion, compared to 25% of Republicans in general. On the bottom two abortion questions, there’s a thirteen point gap. Atheist/agnostic Republicans are less willing to support a ban on late term abortions and less willing to favor a prohibition on federal funds for abortion.
There are gaps among the Democrats, too, by the way. Atheist/agnostics here are consistently more pro-choice than the party as a whole. You can see that especially on the question about late term abortions. About a third of all Democrats would support a ban after 20 weeks of gestation, it was only 13% of atheist/agnostic Democrats. My guess is that a lot of Black Protestants and Hispanic Catholics in the larger Democratic sample are skewing the numbers a bit there.
But do atheist/agnostic Republicans actually vote any differently than Republicans as a whole? Yeah, they do. That’s what is coming through when I calculated the vote choice of those two groups over the last four presidential elections. The gaps aren’t huge, but they are certainly noticeable.
For instance, McCain only got 82% of the atheist/agnostic Republican vote in 2008. But, Romney did a whole lot better in 2012. His percentage jumped up to 89%. However, Trump did really poorly with this group in his first campaign in 2016. He only got 80% of Republicans who identified as atheist/agnostic. It’s interesting that the remaining 20% was fairly evenly split between Clinton (12%) and third party candidates (8%). However, in 2020, Trump did much better with this group - getting back to near Romney levels. This may have something to do with the fact that third party candidates were not as viable in that election cycle.
Here’s what I know - there are going to be more atheist/agnostics who identify as Republicans in the future. It’s almost inevitable at this point. A group like the nones can’t get to 30% of the population by just drawing from the same segments of society over and over again. It will have to get more politically diverse in order for it to grow. How can the GOP be hospitable to this group, while still remaining the party of a whole of evangelicals? Time will tell.
I do think that Trump’s posturing on abortion is probably a good strategy in this regard, for what it’s worth. Making it a state’s rights issue is a way to sidestep the larger moral questions at the federal level and letting voters decide in those states is probably a pathway forward that doesn’t turn off many Christian conservatives and likely doesn’t repel the growing number of Republican nones.

New Beginnings
Summary: Avery Ryan wanted three things from life— love, her career, and to feel like she wasn't ever sacrificing one for the sake of the other. But was that even possible?
Word Count: 4.7k
Part 3
Avery pushed open the door to the bus, her yoga mat tucked under her arm. She was expecting to hear the rustling in the kitchen area of Ashton making breakfast and the smell of coffee dripping into the pot, a routine she’d grown accustomed to during these first few months of touring. A quiet morning spent alone with the man who silenced the butterflies while the world slept on around them. So, when she heard a “So, Avery, who’s your celebrity crush?” she stilled in her tracks.
No… no, no, NO! She knew that interview like the back of her hand, and the thought of Ashton seeing it made her cheeks turn the same color as her hair, and her heart race in her chest. Was it too much to wish for the ground to open and swallow her whole rather than continue to walk towards her doom?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A wave of warmth washed over Avery’s cheeks, and she giggled despite herself. “Oh, that question’s gonna get me in trouble,” Avery giggled again at the interviewer. She didn’t need to look over at Ajani to know that while she was rolling her eyes, Ajani had the same trouble-making grin on her face as their interviewer.
“Oh, c’mon,” the interviewer continued to goat. “The whole world knows that Avery Ryan was off the market before she became a household name. But we’re all human, right? We all got our celebrity crushes, don’t we?”
“Oh, we do,” Avery assured them.
“So?” the interviewer pressed.
“Ashton Irwin.”
Ajani busted into a fit of laughter beside Avery. “Little quick to answer that one, huh, Ace?”
“Oh, shut up!” Avery laughed with Ajani, covering her face with her hands. “Like anyone who says he isn’t at least one of their celebrity crushes is a liar.”
“Facts.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When Avery heard a laugh that wasn’t Ashton’s she breathed a sigh of relief. “Morning, Mike,” she greeted, plopping down on the couch next to him. “You’re up early.”
“Yeah, wanted to catch Crystal before her day started. Catch her up on everything.”
“Mhm, a likely story,” Avery teased, tilting her chin at his phone.
He laughed again and clicked his phone shut. “Yeah, I was telling her about your and Ash’s relationship, and how you both seem at a stalemate. And she mentioned the video. Thought I’d give it a watch. You know this interview is four years old? Still true?”
Avery decided to go with honesty. She nodded.
Michael broke out in a grin. “So, do something about it. Make a move.”
Avery scoffed. “Why can’t he make a move?”
“Aren’t you a feminist?”
“Yeah…”
“So, why can’t you make the first move?”
“Because it’s…” her voice trailed off as she fought to find the right words. “It’s a long story,” she decided with a huff.
“Well better get to telling it before Ashton gets up.”
“So, the abridged version is that Drew— my ex— and I grew up together. He moved to LA first. We reconnected when I moved there. We started dating. Moved in together. Planned our lives together. Everything. But once things started taking off with the band, something changed. Like… I dunno, like he saw the band as something I was only going to do short-term. And he couldn’t figure out how the life we wanted with each other could fit with mine and Ajani’s dreams for Lucky Mess. He started picking fights about whether he could trust me out on the road. And then he cheated on me with his high school girlfriend while I was on the road. And there was no moving past that for either of us. I didn’t want to try to make it work after that. And even if I had, he chose her, so it didn’t matter.”
Avery saw Michael’s jaw tighten and she knew he had felt that similar pain in the past. As a musician, she assumed they all had at least one story like that. “Fuck…” he muttered. “And Ash? He knows?”
“He knows the basics. That Drew and I dated. That we broke up. And that Drew is now engaged to the girl he left me for.”
Michael whistled low. “That’s fucked.”
“Yeah. But Ash doesn’t know that we broke up because Drew cheated. And it’s not even that I’m still hung up on Drew. But the engagement happened literally the day we all started working together, so it’s like a new pain if that makes any sense.”
“No, yeah, that makes sense.”
“Yeah. And then he and his fiancée showed up at the beginning of the tour. And… I know in my head that Drew and Ash are not the same person. I know that I can trust Ash. But…” her voice trailed off.
“It’s a risk,” Michael said knowingly. “A risk that you got a fresh reminder of. But take it from someone who’s known Ash a long time. He’s going to put in the energy he wants returned. He won’t give ultimatums because he doesn’t want to get ultimatums. He won’t make his partner compromise on their dreams for his benefit because he doesn’t want to have to compromise on his dreams for theirs. Plus, he’s totally smitten with you.”
Avery smiled and rested her head affectionately on his shoulder for a minute.
“And how do you know all this stuff?”
“You think it was a typo you got to that pool party 2 hours ahead of everyone else?” His green eyes danced with mischief and trouble.
“That was you?!”
Michael laughed. “It was Cal, actually.”
“You’re much more observant than you let on, Mike. Should I be worried?”
“Nah. I only use my power for good. Pinky swear.”
They were still laughing when Ashton finally stumbled sleepily from the bunks. His shirt rode up as he raised his arms above his head in a stretch, his mouth dropping open in a yawn. Michael’s thumb swiped at the corner of Avery’s mouth. “Stop drooling,” he whispered low so Ashton couldn’t hear, winking as he did so.
She slapped his arm playfully, laughing loudly. “Can you blame a girl?”
“Oh, just make a move. Speaking of moves, wanna play chess? Playing against Luke gets old.”
“Love to,” she chirped.
Ashton watched as Michael pushed himself off the couch and started searching for something. “Videogames already Mike?”
“Nah, were playing chess,” Avery answered.
“Aw, I lost my morning buddy?” Ashton fake pouted.
“Seems like it,” Avery laughed.
“Sorry, mate,” Michael shrugged, his green eyes surprisingly apologetic.
“Nah, no worries. Might get breakfast made quicker without having to help the tiny one reach the plates and cups every two seconds,” Ashton teased, winking at the woman who rolled her eyes and scoffed. He laughed as he got breakfast going, and they set up their game.
“How’s it going?” he asked a little while later, sitting down beside Avery.
Her eyebrows were pulled together, her tongue poking out slightly in the corner of her mouth. “Good,” she said as Michael slowly moved a piece.
“Where’s mine?” Michael asked, looking at the two coffee cups and a large plate of food Ashton placed on the coffee table.
“Bread’s in the cupboard, eggs are in the pan,” Ashton told him while Avery took a bite from one of the pieces of toast, smiling at Ashton in thanks.
Michael rolled his eyes. “Your move,” he told Avery as he got up, muttering under his breath something vaguely that sounded like “And I don’t mean chess.”
If she heard Michael’s less than subtle second statement, she gave no indication. Instead, she wiped the crumbs from her mouth before reaching for her mug to take a sip, studying the board methodically. “Check,” she said, moving a piece and taking another bite of toast.
“Check?!” Michael asked bewildered, leaving his plate on the counter, and rushing back over to look at their game. He quickly moved his king out of harm’s way. “Uncheck!” he said, sticking his tongue out at her before going back to make his food.
“Actually, it’s checkmate,” she replied, moving to block his king in so he couldn’t move it. She leaned back against the couch, her side pressing into Ashton’s. He draped his arm over her shoulders and returned the smile she tossed his way. Ashton swallowed the urge to kiss the side of her temple, not wanting to ruin the soft moment they were creating.
This time Michael didn’t come running back. He just kept making his plate, shaking his head the whole while. “Rematch?”
“You’re on,” she grinned, quickly leaning forward to reset the board. Michael kept shaking his head, but this time Ashton didn’t think it had to do with him losing at chess.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“It’s a great crowd out there,” Avery grinned at Ashton as she came off stage.
“You say that every time,” he told her as they stepped off to the side. Her hand found his heart, and his found hers, feeling it pound wildly with adrenaline.
“That’s cuz it’s true every time. Best fans in the world.”
“Every artist says that, too.”
“Again, that’s because it’s true. It’s fuckin incredible to be able to create something that people can relate to, and that they love it enough to want to relate to it.”
“Well, you’re pretty easy to love.”
Her cheeks flushed and her eyes widened.
“Your work,” Ashton rushed, scratching nervously at the back of his neck. He couldn’t believe he just blurted it out like that… “Your work is easy to love. The way your mind works is beautiful to witness.”
Her cheeks flushed more, and she ducked her head. “Thanks,” she mumbled. “You’re pretty great yourself.”
They lapsed into silence, her heartbeat slowing to match the pace of his, the thoughts they wanted to voice trapped in their throats, eyes searching for understanding in the other. Out of all the tour rituals Ashton had, his rituals with Avery had become his favorite. There was a palpable ache in him to know that tour would end far too quickly for his liking. That one morning very soon he was going to have his morning coffee and not have her giggling at him from across the table. That these moments of finding stillness in each other’s beating hearts, reminding them that they were very much alive were limited. At first Ashton thought that he didn’t want to give it up because it was a hard transition going from the chaotic sound of touring to the deafening silence of being home. But the more moments he shared with Avery, the more he realized it was her that he didn’t want to give up.
Avery didn’t want to give Ashton up either. Ever since the second show, her attention had continued to drift to be centered on Ashton. She could only hope that her trust wasn’t being misplaced; that she wasn’t someone misreading all the signs. But in the middle of the doubt, there was reassurance. Reassurance, and the much-needed comfort that came from the predictability of her routine with him. And she appreciated his patience as she grappled with her lingering hesitation more than she would ever be able to properly express aloud. But maybe everyone was right. Maybe it was time to make a move. A clear, no-room-for-misinterpretation move.
When the stagehand came up to give Ashton a minute warning, Avery and him reluctantly stepped apart, their hands dropping to their sides. “Don’t forget to put your contacts back in after your shower,” he reminded her.
“Thanks,” she smiled softly. “Hey, Ash?” she asked as he started to turn away, her fingers wrapping around his wrist.
“Yeah?” he asked, turning back around. The hand on his wrist tugged Ashton downwards, while her other hand snaked around his neck. She stretched up on her toes and Ashton didn’t hesitate to meet her halfway. With one arm wrapping instinctively around her back, he tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, before cupping her face gently as their lips met. Electricity surged through him as the kiss went from tender and timid to hungry and passionate. And damn it all to hell, as quickly as they started, they had to stop.
“Break a leg, rockstar,” she breathed.
Ashton’s cheeks were already sore by the time he got behind his drum kit, every part of his body tingling. Whatever buzz he got from playing was nothing compared to the high of kissing her and the way she managed to be both completely in control while surrendering herself to him in the same breath. It was the confidence of a woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to give in to those wants. And fuck if feeling wanted wasn’t one of the best feelings in the world.
I’ve got the best friends in this place,
And I’m holding on!
“Thank you! We’re 5SOS!” Luke shouted into the microphone.
“And we’re Lucky Mess! Good night. Houston!” Ajani finished.
They all took a bow and as they walked off, Ashton wrapped an arm around Avery, pulling her into him and pressing a kiss to the side of her head. “You killed it, sweetheart,” he murmured in her ear.
“Couldn’t have done it without you, rockstar,” she beamed up at him. And he knew she meant the song, but he also knew she meant more than that. And Ashton couldn’t help himself. He spun her into him, both of his hands cupping either side of her face and kissed her the way they would have kissed each other earlier if they had more time. They giggled against each other’s lips as their friends whistled and whooped their encouragement. One of her hands left Ashton’s hair to bat them out of their way as they made a beeline for the bunks, collapsing onto the covers and into each other. There was no way in hell they were giving each other up now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There was no need to voice what Ashton and Avery became to each other after that night. It felt good to just know where the other stood without having to say a single word. To know that they could just be two people finding a stillness in the other in the form of warm coffee mugs, stolen kisses, hearts beating in time, and nights spent tangled up in each other.
“Seems like things are going pretty well with you and Ash,” Calum spoke up as they all hung around the bus on one of their nights off, not looking up from his phone. Ajani was next to him doing Luke’s makeup while Michael and Avery played chess at the kitchen table.
“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” Avery answered, not bothering to look over at the man.
“Good, cuz the whole world knows. Someone posted that little smooch he gave you last week at our Houston show,” Calum explained.
“Oh?” Avery asked while Ajani snatched Calum’s phone from him with a “Gimme that!”
“Rank?” Avery asked her.
“Off the charts. It’s really good.”
“And what are people saying?”
“Good things,” Ashton’s voice told her before pressing a kiss to her cheek.
“Oh, look at you all dressed up,” Avery told him grinning. His hair was damp from a quick shower, a short-sleeved pink button-up unbuttoned to a dangerously low level, and black dress pants. “Got a hot date?”
“Yes?” he asked in a hopeful tone, the green and gold dancing in his eyes.
Avery laughed. “Alright. Let me go grab my things.”
“What about our game?” Michael asked, crossing his arms.
“Hmm…” Avert looked at the chessboard, her tongue clicking in her cheek. “Checkmate,” she shrugged, moving one of her pieces and ending the game.
Michael’s green eyes blinked once before going wide. “How?! How do you always win?! Luke, stop getting pampered and come play with me!”
Avery laughed more as she got up from her seat and grabbed Ashton’s hand in hers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“This is actually really nice,” Avery told Ashton as they walked around downtown. “To do something we’d be able to do if we were home.”
“Complete with slack-jawed strangers,” Ashton joked, jerking his chin at the people whispering and pointing as the two of them walked by.
Avery laughed, pushing his shoulder. “Oh, be nice. At least no one’s alerted the press yet. Did you ladies want a picture?” Avery asked, turning around to the group of about five or so young women. They’d been following the pair for about the last block or so, trailing about fifty feet behind, giggling as they tried to gather the courage to speak up.
“Oh, my God, could we?!” one of them asked, while the others dug around for their phones.
“Yeah, of course.” Avery waved them over.
“So, are you guys like dating?” another one of them asked nervously as they started taking pictures.
“Yeah,” both Ashton and Avery answered, smiling at each other.
They continued to make small talk as pictures were taken. Then the group of women thanked the couple for their time and wished them well with the rest of tour.
“So, dating, huh?” Avery teased as they started walking again.
“You said it too,” he reminded with a giggle.
“Well, it’s the truth, right?”
“Course it’s the truth.”
“And it’ll still be the truth when we get back home, and all this goes away?” Avery asked, biting into her lower lip. She was realizing now that she hadn’t wanted to have the conversation of labeling what they were not because she was secure in what they had, but because she wasn’t. She didn’t want to hear the truth if the truth was that this meant more to her than him.
“Hey, look at me,” he said, stopping and spinning their bodies so they faced each other.
Avery held her breath as he leaned down and she stretched up on her toes to help him close the distance. His lips found hers, then her cheek where he licked a long stripe up the side of her face. “Ashton!” Avery squealed. “The fuck did you lick me for, you fuckin weirdo?!”
“There!” he grinned in triumph. “I licked you, so you’re mine now.”
“I am my own person, thank you very much, sir,” she grumbled, wiping at her face.
He giggled, “But?”
Avery grabbed his hand and sloppily licked the top of it. “But, if we’re marking things as ours, you’re mine, too.”
They were still giggling when they started to walk back up to the venue, finding paparazzi milling around. “You good?” he checked, pulling Avery closer to him.
“Are you?” she countered playfully. “Ash, it’s just some people with cameras. I’m used to this, or did you forget that your girlfriend also happens to be a talented musician?”
“I could never forget that.”
“Ashton! Avery!” they called out as the drummers got closer, cameras flashing. “Where’s everybody else?”
“Probably having a quiet night in,” Avery shrugged.
“And where are you guys coming from?”
“Just getting back from our date,” Ashton told them.
“Date?! Are you guys dating now?!”
“Yep,” they both answered. “Enjoy your night, guys.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Between the kiss at the Houston show, and the run-in with both fans and the paparazzi a week later, the news of Ashton and Avery dating spread like wildfire. So, when Avery's phone rang a few weeks later with a number she recognized despite deleting, she was slightly taken aback but not completely shocked.
Avery knew she should decline the call, but she hit accept. “Hello?”
“Hey, Av. You got a minute to talk?”
“I answered the phone, didn’t I?”
Drew let out an exasperated sigh. “Can you set aside the anger long enough to listen to what I have to say?”
“What’s left to say?”
“A lot, actually. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking since LA. Seeing you again… I just miss you. I miss watching you in your element. I miss… everything. Everything about what we were. What we had. And I know I’m the one who fucked everything up. I made my peace with that a long time ago. But I want to try and stop myself from making another mistake. So, I broke up with Madison. Because I realized I didn’t want to give her the life I wanted to have with you. And… I guess I’m saying that life is still yours if you want it.”
“You are… unbelievable. You had years to realize this. Years to have this conversation with me. So, the fact that you’re having it now that you see me finally moving on—"
“I know,” he cut her off. “If I’m the villain in your story… That’s on me.”
She sighed. “You’re not the villain in my story. We just weren’t meant to be, and I finally learned why.”
“I really am sorry for how our story played out. And I wish you nothing but the best. I hope you can at least believe that much.”
“Thank you. And for what it’s worth, you’re not giving Madison my life by being with her. So go rectify that mistake while there’s still time. Bye Drew.”
“Bye Av.”
The line went dead, and Avery wiped at her face in irritation, letting out a small scream as she did so.
“You good?” Michael asked. With everybody off doing their post sound-check/pre-show routines, Avery had almost forgotten Michael was seated a few feet away from her playing on his Switch.
“Life would be a lot easier if you could just hate some people, you know?”
Michael laughed and set the game aside. “Yeah, but then you wouldn’t be you. So, he saw the pictures of you and Ash and finally realized he lost you for good, huh?”
“I swear do you guys just operate from the same script?” Avery asked as she moved to plop down beside him on the couch. She was grateful it was Michael instead of Ajani who had overheard the phone conversation with Drew. As much as Avery loved her best friend, she didn’t need a reminder that she was stupid for wasting any amount of energy mourning the man who had single-handedly blown up any future they might have shared.
“Yeah, we get this nifty little instruction booklet once we hit puberty. The ‘call her up and beg for a second chance once she’s moved on’ is right between ‘break her heart because you’re intimidated by her success’ and ‘what to do when she gives you a taste of your own medicine.’”
Avery laughed, then sighed. “Is it bad that I don’t hate him? I mean I hate what he did. But I don’t think that makes him a bad person. A bad ending doesn’t mean it was a bad story, you know?”
“Yeah, I get what you mean. I think breakups get a bad rep. That they’re these pressure cookers of angst. That the only way to ever get over it is to learn to hate them. But I think that’s a bunch of crap. Like some relationships don’t work. Doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the good anyway.”
“Sometimes I still think it’d be better if I could hate him, though. So, I don’t feel like this…”
Michael furrowed an eyebrow. “Uh-oh… can I not be your friend anymore because you’re about to break Ash’s heart? Man, I really liked having another only child friend to hang out with, too.”
“What? No!” Avery laughed. “God, no. I love Ash.”
“You do?!”
Avery blushed. “Yeah. Yeah, I do.”
“Have you told him?”
“I don’t know how. Plus, I’m scared. What if he doesn’t feel the same?”
Michael snorted. “For one thing, I doubt that. Ash is completely head over heels for you, trust me. And for another, aren’t you a musician?”
“Yeah?”
“So, we got a whole stage full of instruments to help you tell him. Or I can distract you by being really bad at chess while you work up the nerve.”
Avery laughed again. “You’re actually a pretty decent chess player. You’ve just been playing against a really bad one for years, but don’t tell Luke I said that.”
Michael laughed with Avery. “Alright. Should I set up the board then?”
“Think I’m gonna give that talking through music thing a try first,” Avery told him, standing up and patting his leg. “But set it up anyway and we’ll try to squeeze in a game before we go on?”
“Deal. And hey, Avery?”
“Yeah?”
“I know putting your faith in someone new is hard. Especially after what you’ve been through. But don’t let that fear make you push Ash away. I don’t want to have to pretend to not like you.”
“You’re a good friend, Mike.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ashton’s heart was racing in his chest as he caught his breath at the top of the stadium stairs. Fuck, this shit was steep. He used his arm to wipe the sweat off his face and when he turned to jog back down, he saw Avery making her way across the top of the stage.
Ashton frowned. Normally at this time she was tucked away on the bus, reading her way through the thick completed collection of Sherlock Holmes.
Ashton could see her pick up a guitar and start playing, but he couldn’t make out what it was as he started to jog back down the stairs.
I think that I’m all-in.
You’re perfect.
God, I need you.
Just say you need me too.
Her voice rang out. Why did she sound like someone just broke her heart? Ashton jogged faster down the stairs, jumping the last three at the bottom, his sneakers slamming into the concrete floor.
And I want you every night, to wrap my arms around you.
Say it a thousand times.
Come closer, oh come closer.
Maybe it’s a little too much. Whoa.
The more she sang, the less he recognized. Curious, and a little worried at the sudden burst of inspiration, he stopped, waiting for her to finish and notice him.
I don’t wanna fuck this up. Whoa.
I don’t wanna say too much. Whoa.
But I think, I think, I think.
I think I’m in love.
“Hey,” he said, smiled up at her. “Is that true?”
“Hey.” She returned the smile soft and a little sad.
“Is that true?” he repeated, nodding at her guitar. “What you were just singing?”
Her lips quivered as she nodded, a tear sliding down her face. She sniffed, quickly wiping the tear away. “Yeah.”
“Oh, sweetheart…” Ashton braced his hands against the stage floor, hoisting himself up. “Why are you saying that like it’s a bad thing?” He kept his voice soft as he moved to stand by her.
“Because… Drew…” Her voice shook, the doubt taking over.
“What about Drew?”
“He cheated. That’s how our relationship ended. And I’ve spent the past two and a half years trying to figure out how to get past that. And then with you… Everything has been effortless. So different from everything I’ve experienced before. In the best of ways. So, when it came to letting myself love you… I’m powerless to stop it. It’s like loving you was something I was always destined to do. And that terrifies me. It terrifies me how easy it is for me to love you. Because if you don’t feel the same… The only thing I ask of you is that when you break my heart, you do it nicely.”
“That’s not fair,” he chuckled softly.
“What’s not fair?”
“You don’t get the first kiss and the first I love you.”
“You love me?” Her voice came out small.
Ashton wrapped his arms around Avery, pulling her into him, and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. “Of course, I love you,” he murmured, resting his forehead against hers, seeing the swirling shades of green in her eyes that have transformed his life every day for the last eight months. “And I’m scared, too. I don’t ever want to fuck up what I have with you. Because you… Avery, you are worth everything I’ve been through. All of it, the good and the bad. And I want to keep facing everything with you, even if it’s scary. Because you’re my new beginning.”
Avery giggled, nudging her nose affectionately against Ashton’s. “That might be the cheesiest thing anyone has ever said to me.”
Ashton kissed her sweetly. “It doesn’t make it any less true. I love you, sweetheart.”
“I love you too, rockstar.”
Sunlight: An Original Character Story
by WrenTheDragon
Words: 1195. No content warnings apply.
A cute, fluffy little bit of gay romance <3 hope you enjoy
First time I post my writing on here ik it’s bad just bear with me
Character descriptions, because I didn’t feel like working them in there:
Will’s desc: Will has pale skin and dark brown eyes. He has dirty blond hair that he dyes lighter. It is long enough to be parted and one side swoops forward a bit. He loves to wear jackets with band t-shirts and occasionally (but very rarely) he wears a baseball hat. He also wears tight, usually light denim jeans. He sometimes dyes his nails black when he feels like it. Taller than all his friends, but still average height.
Ryan’s desc: Ryan has dark brown fluffy hair and grayish eyes. His skin is slightly darker than Will’s and he has dark freckles if he goes in the sun. He loves hoodies and sweaters and has not worn a short sleeved shirt or shorts in a very long time. He is shorter than August, but just by a little bit.
August’s desc: August has dark brown, long but still slightly fluffy hair. She dyes the front two strands various colors, but usually pink or red. She has tan skin and grayish eyes. She would get freckles if she ever went in the sun. Taller than Ryan by a little bit (even on estrogen) and likes to rub it in his face.
Well now, let’s get on with the story
I woke up to the screeching tone of my alarm clock. I felt around for the snooze button and slammed my hand down onto it. I’ve always hated that alarm clock, it signaled that it was time for me to wake up at an awful hour to go do pointless busywork in a building full of judgmental popular kids. But today was different. Today Ryan was coming back.
I haven’t seen Ryan in two weeks, he’s been away visiting his cousins. Ryan’s family lives pretty far away, so he usually stays a while when he goes to visit. He doesn’t like his cousins much though, they’re the kind of girls who always drown themselves in makeup and are addicted to Snapchat. Ryan texted me a lot about the stupid stuff that they did. I haven’t seen him in person for so long, maybe today we could bike to the ice cream shop together, or take a walk in the forest…
My alarm clock started to beep again. Fuck. I roll out of bed. I remember on the first day of school the world felt so cold and foreign when I woke up. Now it felt bright, and full of possibility. I looked over and saw how pretty the yellow-orange sunbeams spilling through my curtains were, and how the particles of dust danced illuminated in the air. Life is so much different if you have someone to look forward to.
I eat my breakfast as fast as possible, and run out the door to the bus stop. Ryan isn’t there. He’s usually a bit late though, always getting distracted by little things and sleeping in too much. I waited and looked behind me at Ryan’s house a couple times, hoping to see his front door open. Sometimes he would sneak up behind me and grab my shoulders while I was distracted by waiting for him. That usually scared me half to hell, and Ryan would always laugh at me.
I hear the door creak behind me. I look over to see not Ryan, but his twin sister August. They’re identical twins, but they really don’t look much like each other. She joins me at the bus stop.
“Hey Will. Bet you wish Ryan was here instead of me, huh?” She smiles smugly. August really loves to be annoying about me and Ryan.
“No, I uh..” What are you even supposed to say in this situation? “Where is he?”
August chuckles. “Currently, digging through the massive pile of stuff on his desk. Probably lost his homework”
We hear the bus stop at the corner. August sighs and walks back to the door. “Ryyyyyyyan!!! The bus is here, get fucking ready!”
Ryan runs out. His bag is open and haphazardly slung around only one of his shoulders. My face lights up when I see him, and I hope August can’t tell. August smirks at me. Ugh. Guess she can tell.
“How can you ever think that is pretty?” she whispers to me. I ignore her.
I walk onto the bus behind Ryan. I look at his hands, how his fingers perfectly curve, how soft they look. I really want to hold his hand. Do I usually think about Ryan this much?
He sits on our bus seat and smiles, he looks at me like I’m glowing. I sit down next to him. With the sun shining through the window behind him, he really is glowing. I forgot just how pretty his face was. The bus starts to move.
“So, did you miss me?” he says, playfully raising his eyebrows. Of course I missed him.
“I miss getting the whole bus seat to myself.” I say jokingly.
“Well, too bad!” He grins and turns to put his foot next to me on the seat, pushing me towards the aisle.
I want to lay on his lap in protest, but the awful homophobic kids have decided to sit in the seat diagonal from ours. I shove his leg back onto the floor and we both laugh. I scoot back next to him, a little closer now. Our knees are almost touching.
“I uh.. got something for you!” Ryan says. “I was wrapping it, that’s why I was late.” He rustles through his backpack for something, and pulls out a small velvet bag.
He hands it to me, and our fingers brush for a second. Ryan’s fingers feel so warm, but that’s probably because my hands are always cold. I open it, and inside is a bracelet. The bracelet has pretty blue and white beads, and a piece of sea glass. It’s one of the pieces of sea glass that I gave Ryan when we went to the beach.
“You used the sea glass I found at the beach,” I’m trying not to, but I can feel myself smiling a big stupid smile. He’s smiling at me too. It makes me want to lay in his arms and sink into his hoodie and stay there forever. His hand is on the seat next to mine. I extend my littlest finger and lay it on top of Ryan’s. He looks down at his hand and smiles even wider.
He looks up and turns back towards me “Guess what, they’re matching!” Ryan says, and pulls down his hoodie sleeve a bit. He reveals a bracelet almost identical to mine, except for the shape of the sea glass.
“Aww, that’s so sweet” I say “Thank you” I put my whole hand on top of his and grab it. My nail polish is chipping, I should probably repaint it soon. I lean into his side and rest my head on his shoulder, just for a second. It’s as if Ryan is the sun, made of all the light and happiness in the world, and when I touch him I get to feel a little bit of the warmth that he holds. I missed this most of all. He rests his head on mine just a little bit, but people are walking past us boarding the bus so we have to sit up straight again. We’re almost at school.
“I actually did miss you, you know.” I say.
“I missed you too. But you know what I didn’t miss? School.” The bus is driving through the parking lot. “I hate practice tests and reviewing because I forget everything from the beginning of the semester.”
“At least you have classes with the smart and talented moi to help you out” I joke, pointing to myself with a flourish.
We both laugh. People are getting off the bus so I squeeze Ryan’s hand before letting go and stand up, and he follows behind me. As he walks off the bus towards the side entrance to the school(we have different first periods) waving at me, I wonder what would happen if I took his hand and ran away with him to the field, so I could have him all to myself. I walk away, and look at my bracelet. I squeeze my jacket sleeve and smile to myself. I feel like I always feel after leaving Ryan, like there’s still a little trace of sunlight burning in my heart.
Hi!!! I used to follow you in the Middle Ages, in skam fandom. I’ve noticed a lot of skam fans are into 911 and the buddie ship now?? I’ve just came across it. But I can’t seem to figure out: are they together?? Have they kissed?? Or is this a case of writers playing with fans heads? And also, I thought one of the actors was leaving the show?
hey bud!!
okay short answer: they're not together and haven't kissed. but neither actor is leaving the show! ryan guzman's character eddie revealed in the last episode he would be leaving firefighting but that's v much a temporary decision and he's still on the show
long answer (which u didn't ask for and i'm sorry but u touched a nerve askdjfh):
so when i was initially introduced to 911 i had absolutely No Intentions of shipping buddie. i had been in enough fandoms and had had enough canon ships at that point that i very much tried to keep myself at a distance while watching bc, to quote past-me, i was too used to getting what i want sakdjfha (and the times when i didn’t burned me bad)
but in actuality, the way buck and eddie's relationship is portrayed on the show is one of the most respectful depictions i've ever watched??? season 2 has a little bit of the whole ‘wink wink-nudge nudge’ bromance-y moments but season 3 onwards is a complete departure from that. regardless of wherever it ends up, i 100% believe the writers and the actors take this relationship dynamic seriously and want to tell a meaningful story with it. (and my god, do they!!!)
in saying that, we've certainly reached a point as a fandom where i think it's fair to say a good 80-90% of people think they're going canon. i.......do not think this skjadfh
not for any bad reason!!!!! mostly because i just don't think i could ever let myself believe it unless we got a definitive feelings admission or kiss, y'know? personally, this doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the show at all. would i be a little disappointed down the line if they didn’t end up together? sure. but i also trust the show enough to give me an ending for them that feels satisfying and that i can build on in fanon if i want.
(also, as an aside, i do think even if the actors/writers/showrunners wanted it to be canon it’s important to remember we live in a world where networks still Do get the final say and can absolutely pull the plug, despite the best intentions of the show itself)
at the same time, i’ll be the first to admit there are things i can’t explain if buddie isn’t happening - mostly from the season 4 finale onward - but ultimately, i just feel like it’s so lovely to watch that it’s worth it no matter what???? like, i can’t recommend the show enough because it’s just nice and i feel so good when i watch it???????? and with regard to buddie, their development has been given so much attention and has been so carefully constructed that i could never imagine not seeing it through to the end or not being happy with where they end up.
it’s up to you if you decide to watch but i really do think it’s worth it 🥰
The second time you fall in Love
Chapter 1
Pairings: Tyler Seguin x Avalee Woods (Last name sound familiar? Ava is Mila’s -I can be your Sugar- cousin!)
Warnings: Mentions of self esteem issues, cheating, being depressed. I think that’s it.
Summary: No one likes airports, but they became Tyler Seguin’s new favorite place. A chance encounter with a magical girl sends him spinning. But when she starts appearing in his everyday life, he takes it as a sign. But she’s been hurt before. Will he stick around long enough to catch her? Or does the magic run out?
I hope you guys like this! If anyone is interested in the Inspo for this fic, it’s from an article I read. I’ll link it below. Enjoy and let me know what you think! Also, I need to know how we are feeling about Jamie Benn. He is a heavy part of this story, as it was written before the Instagram thing happened. Taking him completely out would be kind of unrealistic, and I’m not sure the story would even be possible without him. There’s key part of Tyler’s career crossed with Ava that make up the story. Leave me some asks or message me to let me know!
Tyler Seguin was pretty sure he’d never felt “Love” and he was honestly not sure he ever would. And that was okay. He had his career, his dogs, and his family and tons of friends. But he had been thinking about it a lot lately. He was 27 years old and had never really had a serious girlfriend. Sitting in the airport people watching, he wondered how many people were heading home to see their wives, or going to surprise their girlfriends.
Usually he was good with the hookup scene. But lately he was craving something more. With a sigh he absently started scrolling through his phone, zoning out. He was vaguely aware of a presence next to him, but he was tired and mildly hungover. He’d partied it up with his friends back home for the last time before he was heading back to Dallas for the upcoming season. He missed Texas, and was looking forward to getting back on the ice with his teammates.
He was startled slightly when he felt an elbow brush against his own. He turned and felt his breath catch in his throat. He’d looked a lot of people in the eyes in his life, but he’d never seen a prettier pair than the ones looking at him right now. Two large sparkling pools of deep blue green, framed in thick dark eyelashes. The type of eyes that could render a man speechless with terror or euphoria depending on her mood.
And then she smiled at him.
“Sorry. These chairs are so small and close together.”
“Oh no worries.” He gave a small chuckle to cover up his staring. He could remember a handful of times in his life that he was nervous and this was definitely one of them. He glanced down at her ticket in her hand.
“Heading to Dallas?”
She nodded and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear “Heading back to Dallas. I was here visiting family.
“Here? In Toronto?”
“My parents live right outside of Brampton. But I live in Dallas year round.”
“Ah. A Canadian girl eh?”
She laughed and smiled wider “Yes. Well half. My dads from Thunder Bay, and my mom is from Florida. How about you uh-?”
“Oh I’m Tyler.” He extended his hand for her to shake, flinching slightly when her skin touched his.
“Avalee Woods. Ava for short. So you were saying your from-?”
“I’m from Brampton, but I live in Dallas 10 months out of the year.”
“For work?”
He bit his lip. This girl didn’t seem to know who he was despite living in close enough distance of his childhood home to be on the same flight. So he did the unthinkable.
He lied.
“Yes. I’m in uh-Customer service.” It sounded lame even as he said it, and if she hadn’t been looking at him, he would have smacked himself in the face.
“Customer Service?” She questioned. She was surveying him quizzically for a few moments before she shrugged “Something tells me your customers have no complaints about you. I’m sure you give excellent service.”
If he hadn’t been so rattled he would have made a joke about servicing her, but he simply smiled and looked at his feet, quickly changing the subject away from himself.
“And you moved here for work at-?”
“I’m a teacher. When I graduated I went to SMU to get my teaching degree and I fell in love with the city.”
“Yeah me too. I never went to college, but I hear SMU is a great school.”
“It is.” She nodded and then looked at him slyly “But I guess you wouldn’t have to think about education post high school…you know with you being a hockey superstar and all.”
Tyler’s mouth fell open in surprise and she burst out laughing “Did you really think I didn’t know who you were? I know all about you Tyler Seguin.”
He chuckled in spite of himself “Damn. Here I thought I was incognito. Guess I’m not that smooth.”
“No you are. Just hard to hide your identity when your a local celebrity.”
“Ah so you think I’m smooth?”
She smiled and shrugged “Maybe. I don’t think I can answer that. I don’t know you well enough yet.”
“Well.” He said glancing at the clock “We have a whole hour. Ask away.”
**********
If there were pictures next to definitions in the dictionary, Tyler’s would under the word Charm. But he would also be under handsome, hot, and various other descriptive words that were swirling around in her head.
But as alluring as he was, she wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. She knew all about Tyler Seguin, and even though rumors were almost always here say, there were enough pictures out there to back up everything she’d heard. She’s even had a handful of friends back home in Brampton who had tried to ride the Tyler train, but had been mostly unsuccessful.
But for whatever reason she couldn’t pull herself from him. Normally she would have run screaming, desperately wanting to distance herself from anything even remotely resembling his type. At 24 she should have known that he was a bad idea, and that she wasn’t 18 anymore. Everyone makes mistakes, but as a teenager some of them can be detrimental.
Avas mistakes name was Brandon.
He had promised her the world, and she had stupidly believed him. She had fought and cried when her parents forbid her to see him, insisting they didn’t know how she felt and they would never understand. She isolated herself from her friends, accusing them of trying to break them up when they told her about the rumors. She spent night and day waiting for phone calls that never came and sold herself short for a little over a year over a guy who acted like she didn’t exist most days.
She shook her head, trying to push the image of his stupid face out of her mind. Even years later it was painful to think about, and enough to send her anxiety through the roof.
“So where in Dallas do you live anyways.” Tyler was turned towards her, one tattooed arm propped on the back of the chair.
“Mockingbird Lane? It’s like 10 minutes from school.”
“No kidding? I live like ten minutes from there. You know, I’m surprised we’ve never crossed paths.”
“How do you know we haven’t?” She mentally smacked herself. She was definitely flirting, and the devil and the Angel on her shoulder we’re having a fist fight in her brain. One was saying “Go for it. He’s hot.” While the other was saying “Don’t you remember Brandon?”
“I would remember you.” She blushed. He was definitely smooth, and she was falling for it like an idiot. While the fist fight in her brain was still raging she tried her best to look away from him, but his smile pulled her back.
“No I don’t think you would honestly.” She said quietly. For a minute she looked almost sad and Tyler wondered who hurt her. It was obvious that she had deep self esteem issues and that he was making her nervous.
“Really? Why not?”
She made a face and smiled and pointed at him “ Superstar Athlete.” And then herself “Middle school teacher. Plus Dallas is huge. And I don’t think we run in the same social group there and back home.”
He smiled “True I guess. How long have you been teaching?”
“7th grade for two years.”
“7th grade? What a year.”
“You have no idea. They tell me everything. Who’s dating who, who cheated on their math test, and who wasn’t invited to the popular girl sleepover.” She chuckled “It’s pretty juicy stuff.”
“I can only imagine. So you live on your own or?”
There it was. He hadn’t executed it as smoothly as she thought he would have. But he had finally asked. During the course of their conversation he had clocked her ring finger, twice, and had alluded more than once to her that he did not have a girlfriend.
“I have a roommate named Molly. But it’s just us.”
“Hmmmm. Interesting.”
“Oh yeah?”
“I was expecting a boyfriend or something. That’s all. Anyways where’s your seat?” He pulled the ticket out of her hand and read it “What? No way.” He pulled up his own and turned to her smiling “Looks like we’ll be seat mates.”
She was smiling on the outside but screaming on the inside. She liked him. Enough that she had let her guard down and talked with him for the last three hours, which was something she swore she would never do again.
Her friends in Dallas knew all about Brandon, simply for the fact that he was still a lingering presence in her life after the messy end to their…whatever it was. Her friends had been wonderful, trashing him and saying mean things for her benefit, but it would never change the nagging fear that lurked in the back of her brain.
Your not good enough
It mocked her daily. When she put on makeup. When she got dressed. Every time she spoke with anyone of the opposite sex. Even though it had been years since she had seen or heard from him, he was always there in her brain telling her how much she sucked. It was tough to live with a ghost, especially a ghost who had turned her entire life inside out, and for really no reason. She had been 18, and stupid but what Brandon did to her was downright cruel and unnecessary.
Finally after what seemed like years the flight began to board. The announcement jarred her from her thoughts and she jumped. Tyler stood, stretching and she pointedly looked away as his shirt rode up, revealing several inches of toned abs before he turned to her.
“Here let me get your bag.”
He swung the bag up over his shoulder and she tried not the watch the flexing under the tattoo that covered his arm. She was struck for a moment by how much bigger he was than her, and how long and lean he was. She followed him forward to stand in line as they waited to board, and then down the tunnel.
“I hate flying.” She said with a sigh as he navigated the narrow aisle to their seats.
“I used to hate it too, but when you fly as often as I do you get used to it.”
“I’m fine once we’re in the air, it’s the takeoff part that freaks me out.”
He found the seats and took a step back, allowing her to slide past him. It was very tight and she made herself as small as possible, but she still brushed against him slightly, taking three deep breaths to push the blush that was rising in her cheeks back down where it belonged.
He threw himself down next to her, and stretched his long legs out in front of him, making idle chatter as the rest of the flight began to fill up. She sank down in her seat as they announced takeoff, and let out a breath.
“You okay?” Tyler was looking at her with concern.
“Yeah. As soon as we’re in the air I’ll be fine.”
She didn’t miss the way he had his arm on the arm rest, palm up, I’m the event that she needed a hand to hold. As much as she would have liked to, she folded her arms across her chest and settled in for the worst part of the flight. As the plane began to move, she felt her stomach lurch slightly and swallowed down the bile that had started to rise in her throat. Tyler looked like he wanted to say something, but he didn’t, instead leaning his own head back and looking at her from the corner of his eye. The plane began to speed up and rumble as it pulled off the runway and into the air, and finally she eased up.
“You okay?”
She nodded and gave a small smile “I just really hate takeoff.”
It was a long flight, and they fell into easy conversation. The row across from them was empty as was the row in front and behind and several other rows. They spoke freely, like old friends and the time passed by faster than a normal flight did. Tyler had rolled out the charm, laying it on thick now. Her efforts to keep him at arms length were failing miserably, and she realized that flirting was fine but once they got off the plane she could walk away risk free.
“Are you looking forward to the season?”
“Yeah I’m hyped. It’ll be nice to get back out there with the guys. Have you ever been to a game?”
“Once when I first moved. A bunch of my coworkers insisted that I hadn’t acclimated to Dallas until I’d been to a Stars game.”
“Did we win?”
She laughed and sipped her water “Yes. But that was the only game I’ve been to. My dads a big leafs Fan. But games were his and my brothers thing.” If Tyler hadn’t been so enamored by her voice, he might have noticed the flicker of pain behind her eyes, that lasted a fraction of a second.
“Does he live in Toronto?”
She shook her head “Not anymore. How about you? You have a sister right?”
“2 sisters, both younger. It’s so stressful. Do you have any idea how hard it is to them from getting boyfriends?”
She laughed “Not at all. But I only had one boyfriend my whole life so… I can’t say I ever had boys breaking down my door.”
He rolled his eyes “Now that I find hard to believe, but I’m assuming he’s not around anymore.” He added the last part hopefully, looking at her from the corner of his eye.
“Nope.” She looked away from him and out the window, clearly uncomfortable. He changed the subject and didn’t bring it up again, but he didn’t miss the way she stiffened when she spoke about him. It would have to be a story for another time.
If there was another time.
He had been scheming on how he was going to forge some type of relationship past a 3 hour and 35 minute flight and he was running out of time. He was used to girls throwing themselves at him, and while she had been flirting a little, it wasn’t enough to convince him she was being anything more than friendly.
He felt dread fill him as the voice of a flight attendant announce they would be landing soon, and to please put trays up and seatbelts on.
“Ah finally home.” She said as the city got bigger beneath them “Aren’t you excited?”
“Yeah.” He said with a shrug “This has just been a nice flight is all. I usually sleep flights away.”
“So I didn’t bore you too much?”
“Not even a little bit.” He gave her a smile, one of those smiles she was sure sent girls melting into a puddle of goo, but she simply smiled back and buckled her seatbelt.
Landing was uneventful, and they didn’t speak much as they made their way through the airport. Several girls recognized him, some even asking him for a photo. Ava lingered awkwardly, slowing her step but continuing to walk, unsure if she was supposed to wait for him.
“Wait for me!” He said, bumping her shoulder as he caught up to her.
“I didn’t wanna interrupt you and your fan club.”
He rolled his eyes but chuckled as they grabbed their bags “It’s both a gift and a curse being this handsome.” She shook her head with a smile, but didn’t feed into it causing him to deflate slightly. As they neared the exit of the airport she stopped and turned to him.
“It was nice to meet you Tyler. Maybe I’ll see you around sometime.” She smiled at him as she ordered an Uber and took a step back. While a tiny part of her hoped she would see him again, another larger part hoped she wouldn’t, for fear of being sucked into the same situation she had been years prior. Left in the dust by another boy who would find something better. She realized though, that while she had always had an inkling that Brandon had less than pure intentions, she didn’t get that from Tyler at all. There was something about the way he was looking at her. While she was terrified at the thought of getting involved with anyone, a high profile athlete at that, she also knew in the back of her mind that meeting him was no coincidence.
“Well how about I give you-“
“No I don’t think so.” She smiled wider, but her guard visibly went up “I’m putting this in the hands of the universe now. If we see eachother again, I’ll consider giving you my number, and maybe we can be friends. If not, then this will just have to be a great first and last encounter for us both to reflect on for the rest of our lives.”
“Ava I-“
“No no!” She said taking a step back, smile still in place “I’m going now. Goodbye Tyler.”
He smiled as she walked away shaking his head. He’d never had a girl refuse his phone number before, but he liked a challenge. He could live with being friends. For now. But he didn’t want to be her friend. He’d never had a girl rattle him that way, and usually got bored of them within the first 5 minutes. But this one was different and he would make it his personal mission to find her again. He watched as she stepped into a cab, and sent him a smile through the window before it drove away.
Ava breathed a sigh of relief in the back of the cab, running a hand through her hair. Dallas was big enough that she was sure she wouldn’t run into him. The universe wouldn’t, and couldn’t put her through this again.
Right?
Title: One Shitty Friday Night (Part 2) *contains some smut*
Pairing: Peter Maximoff x Fem!Reader
Summary: Set after the events of Deadpool 2, this is the conclusion from the previous part here. After your semi-disastrous double date night, you, Peter, Kitty, and Colossus head home with Deadpool and Russell in tow to face Logan, Charles, and Erik back at the mansion. You also get some well earned alone time with Peter at last, only to go back to chaos the following morning with Peter confronting Gambit, and Deadpool popping back in.
Warnings: It’s still a bit of Deadpool and all that entails, but only at the beginning and end. *In this part there actually is some Peter x Reader sex.* But you’re welcome to skip over that if uncomfortable with it. I clearly mark in red before and after any smut within the story so readers can choose what to read and still enjoy just the fluff and character interactions before and after if wanted. ❤️
Peter Maximoff x Reader Masterlist
——————————
The ride home was surprisingly quiet actually. Colossus driving, with Kitty sitting shotgun in the front with him. Russell was in the second row seat behind Kitty, but the seat that normally would have been behind the driver had been taken out specifically with Colossus in mind to let his seat sit further back with his large height.
That just left the third row of three seats. With Peter still not in the best mood, you’d chosen to sit between him and Wade. But they’d mostly just been snacking on the cannolis the whole way home rather than saying or doing much of anything else.
You’d only eaten two in all, hungry but not wanting a stomach ache from the sweetness. You’d felt your own phone buzzing in your pocket most the way home too, but you refused to look at it yet. You could only imagine which friends were trying to call or text you about whatever was being said on TV and the internet now.
Kitty only told you that she’d messaged Xavier to tell him you were all on your way home. But you weren’t sure if she’d warned him about Deadpool and Russell coming with you. Or if she’d kept her phone out at all either afterward, afraid of what the Professor might say in response.
It could have been worse was what you kept thinking. It had been worse actually. Deadpool had once killed an Essex House staff member on live TV, while wearing an X-Men shirt, and with Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead also in camera view. But, given that that trouble had already come from him once, would the Professor be harder on you all this second time around? Would he still think you handled the situation as well as you could have or not?
By the time you felt the familiar turns up the long drive to the mansion, you realized that the period for anxiety was over. Whatever would be would now be.
Colossus had decided to park right in front the main entry doors instead of pulling down into the garage. Mostly just in case Wade’s welcome wasn’t a warm one. He could step right back outside if needed instead of already being in the depths of the compound.
Russell was actually the first one to speak though as you all climbed out the vehicle in front of the well manicured landscaping and dim accent lights.
“Holy shit, he is a rich son of a bitch.” The boy spoke, gaping a little at the sheer size of the mansion and the number of floors still above you.
“The cursing, Russell, please.” Colossus reminded. “There are younger children who live here.”
“Though they should be in bed,” Kitty responded, albeit sounding doubtful herself as she started up the entryway stairs.
They might normally be yes, but probably not if the rumor mill of tonight’s excitement was already burning through the place.
“Well I’ve actually never seen more than three people anytime I’ve been here. So there’s that,” Deadpool quipped.
“Yeah well, we were probably busy.” Peter retorted.
“Oh? Well yeah, maybe you were.” Wade replied, eyeing Peter. “Here’s a thought though, Peters. Maybe next time Ryan Murphy calls, just say N-O. No means no, right?”
“What-” Peter started to ask, but then thought better of it. It really wasn’t worth trying to piece together anything else Deadpool said into something more sensical right now.
As Kitty pushed open the doors and you all strode into the large foyer in front the main staircases, you weren’t sure what would be awaiting you. But the immediate, utterly ecstatic squeal that erupted from Deadpool next had all of you jumping before a gruff voice responded from up on the second floor landing.
“You have to be goddamn shitting me. You actually let that idiot follow you home?” Logan responded, the odd mix of disgust and annoyance so clear on his unshaven face.
“I thought you said no cursing here,” Russell complained.
“Logan is sometimes another matter...” Colossus attempted to answer with some neutrality, even as Deadpool was now bounding up the stairs towards the older man.
“Finally! Finally! I don’t even care if it’s just Tumblr and like two people and their FBI agents will see this! Beggars can’t be choosers! I missed you so much, papa bear!”
You stood there staring in complete disbelief, Deadpool looking as if he was actually going to try and hug the Wolverine.
You were likely all of the same mindset about the only way this could possibly play out, but Colossus was the only one to speak, pleading really. “Please, Logan! No blood on the inside of the house! You know how badly it would stain the floors!”
But Wolverine only growled, claws already aimed as Wade stopped just millimeters short, the metal tips now grazing the mercenary’s throat. “You heard him, Wade. Don’t give me a reason and you won’t be having to regrow limbs tonight.” Logan replied.
“You salty old bastard. We haven’t even seen each other in ages, you won’t return my calls, and this is the welcome I get?” Deadpool pouted.
“You’re bad luck walking, Wade. These kids don’t need you hanging around here for long.”
“Oh, and you’re such a tasteful role model. Grandpappy Wolverine teaching a class on cigar chain smoking, and stabbing your problems away this semester?”
“The fuck are you on about? How many people have you killed this month alone, Wade?”
“Twenty four and a half, thank you. And ask me how many of those never killed or raped someone themselves. How many the police never would have touched. What do you think I’ll say there?”
“Reason it all you want, bub. You’re just a wack job vigilante.”
“This could go on all night.” Kitty sighed. “Logan! Where is everyone else? We brought Russell with us, we need to take him to the Professor.”
Wolverine only softened slightly at Kitty’s voice, answering her. “Charles put in a curfew tonight, all students back to their rooms. Wade’s not allowed past the entrance, but the Professor is waiting for you in his study.”
“Discrimination.” Wade huffed, yet then posed in a mock seductive look. “But if you wanted me alone tough guy, all you’d have to do is ask.”
“Please do not make a mess, Logan. We will be back to collect him as soon as we can.” Colossus said with some concern, you all just starting towards the hallway that lead to Xavier’s office.
“No promises.” Logan called back before continuing, louder then so you could hear him even as you walked away. “And hey, Peter-”
“Yeah?” He answered back from your side, glancing over his shoulder at Logan.
“Your dad’s here, kid.”
Peter paused in his tracks, staring for a moment. You could see the emotions process through him before he took a deep breath. There was nothing more that any of you could do though. He just lifted a hand up in a wave of acknowledgement, finally starting to walk again. “Thanks for the warning,”
Even in all that had happened through the years though, going to see Xavier like this still brought back an odd sense of childhood. And that little feeling of dread to be honest. Not because you really thought he would be angry, but because you worried that you may have disappointed him. Which would have always been the worse of the two options in your own mind.
Colossus was the one to slide the ornate pocket doors open, you all trailing in behind him as you entered the study.
It was warm inside, the fireplace crackling and dancing. That fire was the only light besides a couple small table lamps and a TV now on mute, but still running the late night news.
You were but weren’t surprised to see Erik sitting there as well, a short glass of what looked like scotch in one hand. There was a chessboard as well, positioned between himself and Charles on a little table, the pieces clearly still in play.
As the TV flickered again though, you glanced back to it reflexively. You saw an exterior shot of the restaurant you’d been at only a short time earlier, now with police tape all around. It cut to a video of Colossus walking up to police cars with Giovanni in hand, but then just as quickly the flashing red and blue lights changed to the white flashes of cameras and yourself and Peter talking before the sudden kiss. You only looked to the floor in renewed embarrassment then, choosing not to read the ticker captions currently scrolling beneath the now looping video.
“Hey, Dad...” Peter said somewhat unsure, but still the first to speak. He’d shoved his hands into the pockets of his leather jacket now, as he often did when nervous. “Didn’t know you were in town.”
“Peter.” Erik answered plainly though, taking a sip of his drink before setting it back down. “I only arrived this afternoon. I had been hoping for a quiet evening.” He looked briefly towards the television, but then coolly back to Peter. “But here we are aren’t we?”
“Erik,” Xavier warned lightly though, no doubt sensing Peter tense further at the tone.
“They aren’t children anymore, Charles.” Erik responded sharply. “And it never should have been allowed to get to this point. I told you from the beginning that they should have worn masks, they should have been discreet. Trying to craft this foolhardy public image of the new X-Men as some celebrity clean up crew for humans’ mistakes, it’s making a mockery of us all.”
The exasperated breath that came out of the Professor next told you that this was far from the first time that this subject had come up as a point of contention between the two. But the rest of you were quite helpless whenever Erik and Charles would start to argue in front of you.
Xavier countered, “As I have also said before, Erik, we all knew there would be some negatives from moving more into the public eye with our team. But how can mutant kind ever be accepted for who we really are if we only kept slinking in the shadows for the rest of our lives? It’s no different than Raven showing herself on camera all those years ago. You know what an impact that made on the youth in our community then.”
“But the humans are fickle. The magazines and the talk shows only jest at you now. What happens when they turn on you? When my son’s face is only on a wanted list in a database, Charles? What then?”
The anger and protectiveness flaring up in Erik’s tone only made the room even more uncomfortable, yet you didn’t find yourself surprised. Peter’s relationship with his father would never be an easy one, but you knew in the end that Erik did feel a sense of responsibility towards his progeny. And hell have mercy on anyone who did ever truly harm Wanda, Peter, or Lorna and word of it get back to their father.
Charles remained patient though, likely understanding those paternal emotions all too well himself. The Professor treated you all as well as his own after all. “The ones that wish to harm us already knew who we were, Erik. They don’t need to pick up that gossip drivel to find us. We protect ourselves by staying together, as we always have. They want us, then they’ll have to face us all. And Lord knows even gods have tried.”
Erik frowned, and for a moment you wondered if Xavier was saying something more to him telepathically. Something to make him finally quiet or at least agree to postpone the argument’s continuation for later in private.
Regardless of whether your instincts were correct or not on that, their conversation did end abruptly then. Charles switched to a warmer, but still slightly tired tone as he looked back to the rest of you. “Well, I know you’re all ready for tonight to be over. I won’t keep you much longer. Kitty, if you could make sure that weapon you confiscated ends up locked in Hank’s lab tonight, we’ll see about it later. Given that those men would not need something so extravagant just to dispose of other humans, I’m certain it was developed or at least purchased with our kind in mind. We will learn what we can.”
She nodded in agreement before he then turned his attention to the, to this point, uncharacteristically silent Russell with a kind look. “And Russell, I appreciate you deciding to give us a second chance. You’re welcome to stay of course. Did you still wish to speak to me? I know it’s late. Don’t feel obligated to stay and talk if this is all a bit much right now. We can always go over more about the school in the morning.”
“Um...” The boy blinked, not quite ready it seemed for any of the focus to be back on him so soon. And it was only then that you realized it was Erik that Russell kept staring at as he tried to formulate a real response. Actually Erik and briefly back to Peter, that tell tale look on the boy’s face that you’d seen so many times before when people realized who Peter really was, who his father was. Russell was maybe even regretting picking on Peter earlier now.
Charles certainly hadn’t missed that though. Surely sensing all the boy’s thoughts and feelings now as he continued. “It’s alright, Russell. Yes, Magneto does stop in here from time to time. We’re old friends. Yet I hardly think you should be so concerned with him when you’ve already gotten on quite well with my stepbrother haven’t you?” Xavier was actually smiling then. “To get on the Juggernaut’s good side, if even briefly, is quite impressive I must say.”
That did seem to finally break the ice a little then as Russell looked back to Charles. “Yeah, I... I needed a prison friend. A big one.”
“He is that, certainly,” The Professor responded. “Yet to answer the other questions still running through your mind -and forgive me to read you- but of course you can absolutely train with us to better learn to control your fire powers if you’d like. And yes, you may also have a television in your room. I think that’s a reasonable request after living in less than desirable conditions with Wade for this long.”
“Yeah, there were rats and the old blind lady sells cocaine.” Russell answered so matter of factly that the rest of you, minus Charles who was evidently now fully aware of Russell’s recent memories, all just stared.
“Despite his, ah, unique flaws, I can say that Wade would never willingly let anything happen to you.” Xavier just continued. “But yes, it would likely be best to give you a bit more sanitary and less illegal living conditions. And of course this would all be voluntary, if you find you don’t like it here after all, you’re always free to go as well.”
“Cool. Yeah.” Russell agreed. Though not really sure what else to say.
“Wonderful,” Charles just looked back to Colossus and Kitty then. “Can you two please see Russell to one of the empty rooms so he may pick one out to sleep tonight? And please let Wade know of his decision to stay for now.”
Colossus spoke up though before they all walked out together, “And am I sending Wade home as well? I do not think he and Logan can be peaceable for a whole night in the same building.”
“Agreed. Like oil and water there. I would prefer not to have to repair cerebro again either, as we’d had to from his last stay with us.” Xavier looked apologetic though to Colossus. “Is it too much to ask that you offer him a ride back home tonight?”
But Russell just cut in before Colossus could respond. “Nah, Wade already called a cab to meet him back here before we left town. You can just dump him outside now. Let him be their problem.” But even Russell knew to elaborate a little. “And it’s not some random person he might scare off. It’s his friend Dopinder. But you might want to give him some money first. He never pays the guy. Wade doesn’t carry a wallet. Tightwad.”
Kitty sighed. “I’ll cover it. I have cash. Never got to eat or pay for our dinner after all.” She glanced to you and Peter briefly. “Maybe next weekend?”
“We can try,” You offered quietly.
She smiled, understanding that sentiment that you all might want to lay low for awhile after this fiasco of an evening. “I guess we’ll see how we feel. Night, guys.”
“Night.” You and Peter responded to her in unison.
When Kitty, Colossus, and Russell had left the room, you happened to glance back at the TV, though you were at least a little relieved to see the news had finally gone off and by the captions it was just some talk show host joking about whatever a bigger idiot politician had done now.
But Peter’s voice brought your attention back to him.
“Are we free to go too?” He asked cautiously, maybe even more uneasy now that it was just the four of you as he looked to his father and Charles.
The two older men exchanged a glance of their own as silence hung for a moment.
Erik sighed eventually though to break it. His voice serious, but lacking it’s usual coldness. “You can’t keep diving into everything headfirst, Peter. You’re going to get yourself killed.” He seemed to be studying his son’s face a moment. “And what are those bruises even from?”
“I, uh...fell down a flight of stairs.” Peter answered, taking a breath as if to steel himself for further scolding, obviously that admission only adding to his father’s point.
Yet you interjected before Erik could respond. Before you could help yourself, as it wasn’t fair for Peter to be singled out here. “I’m the one that told him to go to the basement.” Normally Scott was mission leader, or maybe Ororo. This wasn’t a role you were used to, but you’d take responsibility where it was due tonight. “I thought it would be safest for him to go first, to disarm them all, but-”
“But you sent him straight into an ambush.” Erik countered. And when his gaze shifted to you with those words, it was clear that even after this long, it still had an effect. An intimidation factor that you could only hope didn’t show through in your expression.
But it was Charles that came to your defense. “That’s a gross over simplification, Erik. Peter had already examined the area on his own accord moments before to no harm. There would have been no reason for them to think he couldn’t return to it.”
For Xavier to already know that level of detail, meant he’d already searched you and Peter’s minds tonight as well, just as he had Kitty about the gun. Which honestly was okay with you as it meant you wouldn’t have to really explain everything that had happened and risk making things sound even worse.
But Erik was still staring at you both, looking displeased.
Peter shifted, uncomfortable with the quiet. “Look, if you’re going to yell at me for what I did on TV, then just get it over with. It wasn’t (Y/N)’s fault. I was the one that made us stay as long as we did, and I was the one that got pissed off at what those guys were saying. It’s always like no one can believe we’re still together. Like I have to keep proving it.”
That admission actually did catch you off guard. Especially to be said here in front his father, and well in all honesty sort of stepfather that Charles was for all intents and purposes. You immediately felt you should say something, but were even further stunned when Erik beat you to it.
“Peter, for God’s sake. You may have problems, but I assure you that (Y/N) is not one of them. Quit being so dense, boy.”
You blinked, unsure if you’d actually just received a rare semi-compliment from Erik.
But Peter just rolled his eyes. “Thanks for the pep talk, Dad. Yes, I know that. I’m saying how do I make everyone else know that? Some fatherly wisdom would be great right now.”
Erik frowned, looking annoyed at Peter’s reaction. “I’ve told you before, I can’t teach you self-confidence, no one can. Though I’ve always been willing to fight for what I wanted. That’s a start.”
“Erik, no.” Charles interrupted. “Peter, we all question ourselves from time to time. But when it comes to relationships, nothing going on on the outside will matter as long as you focus on keeping things strong between the two of you. Weakness there is the only way those outside troubles can get in to break things down.”
“Oh typical, Charles. So it’s still turn the other cheek to everything else then? Pacifism is not how love is won.” Erik replied, now staring back at Xavier.
“Love is not a thing to be fought over, Erik, and neither is (Y/N). People are not trophies to be claimed.” The Professor responded, meeting Erik’s gaze easily.
“Okayyyy,” Peter said, glancing to you and the no doubt really uncomfortable expression on your face now. “I think we’re just going to go to bed now.” His voice was getting a little quicker as he touched your arm as if to usher you out with him. “We’ll be more careful next time, we learned our lesson, so sincerely sorry and humbled, good nigh-”
“Peter.” Erik called back though before you could both reach the doorway.
Peter looked back reluctantly, only to see Erik now holding up a phone.
“Do at least message your sisters tonight to tell them you’re alright. As refreshing as it is to be receiving so many calls from them this evening, it’s only you they wish to speak to.”
“Uh, sure,” Peter offered, a little surprised. “I haven’t even looked at my phone. I will. Night!”
“Good night.” You also managed, speaking back at least politely to the two men just before Peter hurried you out into the hallway.
——————————
You’d both chosen to take one of the other halls afterward, as to avoid the front foyer and any drama that may still be occurring there if Wade and Logan were still facing off. There was another set of stairs at the back of the house, and it’d been a real relief not to run into anyone else on the way as you took them up to your floor.
By the time you finally got to your bedroom, you didn’t bother to turn on the ceiling light, just switching on the lamp at your bedside end table as you sat down on the bed. You pulled off your shoes, and heard Peter’s jacket already hitting the floor before his own weight hit the bed, making you bounce slightly.
“Ugh,” He said, already barefoot and stretched out behind you laying on his back. “That was awkward right?”
“What part of the night specifically?” You questioned, throwing off your own coat into a then indiscernible pile in the darkness outside of the lamp light. Normally you were the one picking up after Peter, but you weren’t in the mood to hang up or fold anything tonight.
“Good point,” He conceded. “But I was mainly thinking of Dad and Charles. Sorry to drag you into that.”
Yeah, that had been pretty weird. “Well, Xavier was just trying to help. And I think your Dad was too...in his own way. I guess.” There wasn’t a whole lot you could add to that. Peter’s insecurities could flare up from time to time still, but he’d actually gotten a little better over the years. At some point he had finally realized you really were going to stick around. It wasn’t just pretty words and passing teenage hormones.
After you’d actually started rooming together officially, you knew there had even been some joking from your friends about Magneto one day becoming your father-in-law. But you tried not to humor any of that. You were in no hurry, and felt further commitment to that level would have to be Peter’s decision. It wouldn’t be fair to put him under that kind of pressure.
You knew he had reservations on the subject when none of his father’s marriages had ever worked out. He wouldn’t say it outright, but you were sure Peter felt there was still some sort of family curse there that he didn’t want to tempt fate with. As if making you his spouse would be the final straw and something would come to take all his happiness away.
You felt him moving a little then as he pulled his phone out of his pocket. “Alright, before I forget, group message to Wanda and Lorna...” But he paused, looking up at you with just a blank white screen on the phone. “What do you think I should tell them?”
“Peter, they’re your sisters.” You smiled, not sure why this would be a question to you. “Just say you’re fine, you’re back at the mansion, and you’re going to bed. You can always call them tomorrow.”
He made a face at that though, “What if I don’t want to call them tomorrow? They’re just going to lecture me. Oh, I know!” He smirked as if he’d thought of something clever, adding to whatever he was already typing. “Dad already fussed at me. So don’t worry about it. Wanda, tell mom the same thing. ❤️👍”
He turned the screen to show you. “Think that will work?”
“Genius.” You replied.
“Smart ass.” He grinned, but sent the message before quickly turning his phone back on silent and setting it on the other end table.
You took your own phone out your pocket, intentionally not reading the number of notifications left on the home screen as you also set it to the side before standing up to take your pants off.
You’d just slid them down, trying to step out of them when a sudden pinch to your backside almost had you stumble forward, one foot still stuck in a pants leg.
“Speaking of ass...” Peter teased, pulling his hand back before you could smack it.
“So the cannolis gave you a second wind, huh?” You turned, not surprised to see that devilish grin starting as he now looked you over while you next removed your shirt. You’d think he’d be used to this view by now.
“I was feeling hopeful, yeah,” he replied, though remaining where he was in the bed as your shirt joined your pants on the floor. “Of course I am still pretty tired,” He added, “Maybe you could help me out here?”
You raised one eyebrow as he motioned to the zipper of his jeans. Oh, so this was how it was going to be? He seemed so pleased with his idea though, you couldn’t help but be amused.
***smut starts here, scroll on to skip*** “So pitiful, my poor speedster.” You said, albeit smiling as you climbed into the bed. You straddled him gently, seeing that needful look already beginning to cloud his eyes as he still laid on his back beneath you.
You were tired yourself, and hungry still, but you’d survive until morning. This effort for some physical intimacy seemed worth it to at least end this bizarre night on a good note for the both of you.
And you knew you both wanted it. He might be making a play that he was going to make you do all the work right now, but you highly doubted he’d have the self control to not jump in once things actually got going.
You pushed his shirt up, running both your hands up the sides of his torso. Like anyone would expect for someone as fast as him, he was built lean, though there was sinew there. Just that bit of muscle, storing all that energy, ready to take off at a moment’s notice.
The room was cool. It was still winter and the high ceilings didn’t do much to keep heat near the floor. You knew your hands would be a little cold as well. So you willed just the slightest bit of your energy field from your palms, warming them as you stroked his chest. You could see the bit of bruising here and there from his earlier fall, but luckily nothing extreme.
He relaxed his head into the pillows behind him, clearly enjoying the feel even as you heard his breathing increase slightly. He liked to be petted, but you knew it would be too much of a tease for him if you focused above his waist for too much longer.
You left his shirt pushed up to bare his abdomen to you, even as your hands ran carefully back down, stopping at his belt. Never quite the typical guy when it came to fashion, it wasn’t a normal peg and hole type, but actually an old seatbelt buckle. You undid it with a click, pulling it out through the belt loops of his pants as he arched a little to take his weight off the back and fully free it.
Once that was out of the way, you unbuttoned and unzipped his jeans with little fanfare. His normally loose boxers were already a little tighter though you noticed.
He made a noise, shifting into the touch as you cupped him with your hand. You massaged the area through the fabric, feeling him gradually stiffen as you got a little more forceful.
By the time he was fully erect, it was all too simple to slip him through the now stretched open flap in the boxers.
You had been intending to stroke him now, but on a whim you decided to go another route. Something a little less predictable you hoped, but what you knew he would still like. You doubted you were all that good at it really, but he’d never complained before.
And you could tell he was surprised, you heard him take in a quick breath as you lowered your mouth down on him, sucking him as he spread open his legs for you. You couldn’t take him in too deep without gagging yourself, but you tried to make up for it by moving up and down gingerly as you used your tongue as well.
It must have been stimulating enough for him though as you felt his hand on the back of your head shortly after, and felt his hips starting to rock rhythmically against your mouth.
He gave a quiet moan, he was so very hard now, but you didn’t let up. You knew sometimes, especially if it’d been a while since you’d last had a chance to be intimate together, he may actually cum fairly quickly. But if he did, then he did. You weren’t worried about whether you got anything in return tonight. Truthfully, your heart was already pounding, the heat in you building, just because you knew he was so aroused.
It was always give and take, and there was no rule of whose turn it was at any given time.
His whole body stiffened a little and for a moment you thought that would be it. But his hand moved to your shoulder suddenly instead, pushing you back as you released him in response.
You pursed your lips as you looked back up at him, that little bit of irritation still felt on them of where they’d dragged against him.
He was already sitting up though, pulling his shirt off completely before he tossed it off the bed. “Come on, babe, clothes off please.” He breathed, his silver hair falling into his dark eyes as you moved off of him and he laid back again just long enough that he could pull off his jeans and work his erection free from his boxers before they ended up cast out into the darkness as well.
While you’d been watching him, you’d also been unhooking your bra as requested, tossing that away. Which left only your underwear before you’d slid it down your legs, flicking it off too once it’d only been left swinging from one foot. He closed the small distance between you so fast then, you were sure he’d actually just used his powers before you felt his lips against yours. Desperate almost, as his tongue pressed through immediately afterward.
You shivered, not expecting the feel of his fingers against your entrance almost simultaneously. Just two of them, moving methodically against you. The room felt far from cold now. But you were just kissing him equally as hard now as he started to push his fingers in further, testing your readiness.
By the time you trembled again from his probing, you knew you were fully wet enough. It was a mutual realization evidently as he broke the kiss, urging you to turn so your back was facing him as he moved behind you on the bed.
You understood what he wanted as he kneeled behind you. You let yourself lean down onto your elbows in the pillows, but also on your knees in the back as you felt him grab your hips from behind. You arched your back, curving your back downward to help angle yourself into him as you felt his tip pressing into you.
As wet as you were now, he only had to try a couple times before he was able to slide fully in. To the hilt so to speak as you felt his torso now pressed flush against you. Already that slight sheen of sweat was starting where your skin touched together as he began to thrust.
The bed was creaking, and you bit back a moan of your own, never quite sure how thick the walls really were in this house. It was kind of an unspoken thing that as long as precautions were taken, and the others in the house didn’t have to hear or see anything you did in the privacy of your own room, then no one would care if people coupled up. For the two of you, precautions only meant a birth control pill, not worrying about condoms any longer after several years of monogamy.
His thrusts were getting even more uneven though, which told you he was close to orgasm. But you couldn’t help but push back against him yourself, panting a little as you felt him grab and squeeze one of your breasts. He was supporting himself with his other arm as he leaned forward suddenly, still inside you as he nipped you lightly on one shoulder, then kissing the same spot before he breathed in your ear.
“How do you always feel so good?” He murmured.
As he let go of your breast, you felt his hand go back between your legs. Even though he was still buried fully in you, his fingers went back to teasing the outside. The over stimulation left you shuddering, and you knew he was trying to get you to orgasm first.
His fingers just kept moving as he started to thrust again. You loved that feeling of fullness, when he was all the way inside, but it was the added teasing of his fingers where you were most sensitive that finally sent you over the edge. Your muscles inside spasming around him then as that unmistakable burst of euphoria went through you, leaving every piece of you trembling.
He clearly felt your orgasm, only moving both hands back to your hips then. Pulling you back against him as he thrust roughly several more times, enough to get his own release as you felt his erection pulse in its own right, knowing he had then let go inside you as you felt that warmth already dribbling back out onto the bedsheets.
Even though you’d started the foreplay, he’d done most the work for the finish. Yet you still felt spent now, only rolling onto your back after he pulled out, trying not to let too much of his seed run back out of you and onto the bed.
He was still breathing a little unevenly as he left the bed only long enough to go grab a clean hand towel from the bathroom. One of those pluses of having had the mansion rebuilt back then was that so many more of the rooms now had their own bathrooms. And after he’d wiped the residue off of himself, he handed you the towel. You dabbed up the small spot on the bed, before wiping off the remainder from your skin as well, then tossing the towel unceremoniously onto the floor with everything else.
Peter turned off the end table lamp before climbing back into the bed beside you in the darkness. The only light then coming from the moon and starlight through the thin curtains at the windows.
You were both still naked, and a little bit hot as you only pulled the covers as high as your waists, knowing the room’s cool air would chill you quickly enough now that no more physical exertion was taking place.
Hot or not though, his arms went around you as he then pulled you into a spooning position in the darkness. You actually felt that he was still about half hard too as it touched against your backside again, you now both laying on your sides with your back to his chest.
***sex over, you’re safe to start reading again*** “That almost made up for this entire night,” He joked quietly, kissing the back of your neck a couple times before you felt him smile against your skin. He moved one of his hands to trail it lightly over your hip, the sensation tickling you slightly as he spoke again. His voice was soft, a true contentment in his tone. “Love you.”
That wasn’t a phrase he said often. But the both of you seemed to save the word as to never water it down. When it was said, it made it really mean something more.
You reached down for his hand that’d been playing with your hip, grasping it warmly and weaving your fingers between his. “I love you.” You said simply, no need to elaborate on what was just a fact.
He squeezed your hand a little harder, but said nothing more, you both just enjoying the touch and comfort of each other’s presence.
You moved your head a little more into the pillows, getting just right as you closed your eyes.
——————————
Your dreams faded in and out, nothing you could remember in detail though as the sunlight on your face now had you squinting. You thought of just pulling the blanket back over your head, but your brain started to register the smell of food as well. Bacon specifically as you lifted your head a little, trying to focus.
“It lives!” Peter joked from beside you, sitting cross legged on top the blankets and just in his boxers again. Two plates of food sat in front of him, the source of the smell you realized as you sat up a little, pulling the sheet up enough to cover your bare chest in the cool room.
Very rarely did he ever wake before you, and your still half asleep stare of confusion only made him smirk a little.
“I had to pee.” He said through a mouthful of food, a sausage biscuit with a large bite already taken out of it in one hand, and a video game controller pressed down into the bed with the other. His hand with the controller was blurring slightly as he moved it just fast enough to work the joy stick and buttons simultaneously. “Then I remembered they released that new DLC last night. Had to try it out. I turned the volume down though. Considerate right?”
And it was indeed silent, not the usual grunts and blasts and screams from that gory fighting game he loved so much. His character was currently comboing another into oblivion on the small TV across from the end of your bed.
Your lack of any real dinner the night before had you focusing back to the food in front of you though.
“Go on,” Peter encouraged. “I knew you’d be hungry. It’s not all for me.”
Normally you were against eating in bed, just from the crumbs and general mess it could make. You’d had the misfortune to find the sticky remnants of Twinkies and the like from Peter’s late and early snacking many times.
Yet even as you picked up one of the amazing looking sausage and egg biscuits for yourself, you wondered if anyone else was now going without. Was it stolen goods? “Where...did this come from?” You asked, voice still a little hoarse from just waking, even as you bit down hungrily.
But the implication of your question didn’t even faze him. “Oh there was plenty. Raven told Hank he didn’t know how to cook, so guess who wins? Us when he made three damn trays of these things.”
“Sounds like she had a plan.” You responded, also grabbing a couple pieces of bacon now.
“Totally.” He agreed. “And orange juice is on the end table, babe.”
You glanced to your side, indeed just noticing the glass beside you then. “Well, you’ve been busy.” But your attention eventually drifted back to him only sitting there in his boxers after you’d taken a few sips of juice. “Did anyone even see you?”
“Nah. Maybe they felt an errant breeze or two.” But he was grinning in a way that still gave you pause.
You watched him a little while longer, only feeling more and more sure before you finally offered out the accusation. “No. You did something. Something else...”
He’d already emptied his plate now, both hands on the video game controller then as he seemed to put his focus solely back to the TV screen. Intentionally of course before he grabbed the nearby remote to start turning the volume back up.
“Peter.” You spoke anyway, knowing full well he could still hear you. “Did we not just scrape by last night without any big consequences? You’re going to put that goodwill to the test already this morning?”
“It’ll be fine.” He answered. “It’s nothing.”
Your eyebrows raised a little. His ‘fine’ and yours could sometimes be completely different things. You sighed, going back to eating the food in front of you as Peter’s character liberated the head off another in a ridiculous fountain of CGI blood.
If you could just finish your breakfast before the next possible calamity-
The bedroom door absolutely rattled in its frame with the pounding on it that almost had you spilling the juice in the bed. By the time your annoyed look moved to the spot Peter had just been, the video game was already paused. Only yourself now alone with whoever was on the other side of that door.
“Just say I’m not here!”
You couldn’t even tell where the whisper came from. Peter either hiding in the closet or maybe the bathroom, they were too near each other to tell.
“I’m not even dressed!” You retorted just to him, quite literally naked as you tried to disentangle yourself from the blankets without dumping your food plate, while simultaneously setting the glass of juice back onto the end table.
Peter said nothing more, so you could only call out that you were coming as you anxiously tried to find some of your clothes from the night before. You were able to find your underwear, and the um, incriminating towel, but that was about it. Sure it’d been dark, but how on Earth anything else could have gotten much farther or under something so quickly was beyond you. You kicked the towel under the bed, and you just had to settle for Peter’s t-shirt crumpled in your path as you grabbed it up and yanked it over your head, hurrying for the door.
You still tried to tug the shirt down as far as you could though, at least covering your panties and butt you hoped before you finally pulled the door open. Pantsless, barefoot, and probably with bedhair as you stared up into the glowing red eyes of a very irritated looking, and entirely shirtless Remy LeBeau.
His expression softened just slightly at the sight of you, his lips curling into a handsome smile. But one that didn’t quite reach those crimson eyes. “Mornin’, cher...so sorry to intrude, but I need to have a few words with that boy toy of yours.”
Yet you were staring still, taking time to process the sight before you. There was black...large black streaks all across his face. It circled his eyes in a cartoon like representation of glasses. Though he already had some stubble on his face, the streaks condensed around his mouth as well, like the upturned mustache and goatee of an old timey villain. As if he should be going to tie up some poor girl to train tracks somewhere.
“Oh my God,” you breathed. Permanent marker, seriously? How old were all of you again? “Remy, I’m sorry.” You thought about saying something about how Peter had let those paparazzi get under his skin last night. But it wouldn’t matter. Not if none of these boys were in the mood to be reasonable right now.
“You know you’re not going to catch him.” Is what you finally said. “Please don’t blow up my bedroom trying.”
“And he ain’t worth my chasin’, petite. I just want to talk,” Remy insisted though, voice as smooth as you’d ever heard it as he leaned against your doorframe in only a pair of pajama pants.
But the few playing cards now flitting between his fingers told you otherwise on his supposed peaceful intentions. Yet when he saw you look down at them, another one appeared seemingly from nowhere in his other hand.
He offered it to you, “But if he isn’t man enough to show himself, at least I get the pleasure of your company, non?”
The card was the king of hearts of course as he palmed it into your hand before you could think to stop him. But you knew it wouldn’t be charged if he was handing it to you like that. You trusted him at least that much.
Yet you were quite sure he was still only trying to lure Peter out by audibly flirting with you now. And sadly, it would probably work. “Remy, can you two just save it for the danger room?” You tried again. “It’s too early, really. I was just trying to eat breakfast.”
“Well, seeing as how you’ve been ditched, I don’t see why someone like you should have to eat all alone.” He answered effortlessly, just strolling past you further into the bedroom as if there was no awkwardness in this at all.
In a moment of panic you wondered if it’d be best to just call for backup. Your cell phone wasn’t very far. Was everyone awake already? What if you just called Rogue? That’d be the most straight forward right? Oh, but you could imagine that conversation. Hey girl, come get your man out of my bedroom please? Yet she totally would. He’d be as helpless as a toddler if she decided she was dragging him out.
“You know,” Remy said, considering a little as he palmed one of the uneaten biscuits right off the tray like it was a bauble to steal. “I did think we looked good together in those pictures they printed from the beach. It’s only natural you know. When two people have chemistry, everybody can see it.”
And that was it, the final straw. You didn’t even know why you still jumped when the bathroom door flung all the way open. The window opened too, a couple cards Remy had already thrown then exploding out there harmlessly like little fireworks as Peter had redirected them outside.
Your bedsheet seemed to have a mind of its own as it ripped off the bed and tied around Gambit as well, pinning his arms to his sides as he was forced to then kneel in front of you.
Peter reappeared at your side, looking down at his handiwork as he scowled at the other man. It was a rare expression on Peter’s face, but a little more jarring for that reason.
“Apologize to (Y/N).” Peter demanded. “Or you’re going out the window next.”
But you knew Remy’s wounded pride meant there would be no such possibility of deescalation now. They were going to have to be physically separated and given a cool off period no matter what. As you considered whether to actually put a shield around one or both of them to essentially begin preparations for mutant time out, Remy was already countering back at Peter, a mocking tone rolling off his tongue.
“Alright. I’m sorry, (Y/N). I’m sorry that you got saddled with a jealous little boy who goes after rivals in their sleep rather than face them like a man. And then just hides behind that same woman he thinks they’re going to take from him, yeah?”
Oh for God’s sake! You dropped the card Remy had given you, that you’d for some reason still been holding. You powered up, trying to catch both of the guys in two of your force fields, Peter had already been in movement though. In actuality you’d only ended up shielding Remy just before Peter had kicked the field, looking as if the hit had been intended for the Cajun’s chest.
“Don’t protect him!” Peter looked to you in surprise.
“I’m protecting both of you!” You responded, then glowing white and hovering now several feet off the floor in your annoyance.
“Kinky.” A new voice spoke, followed by a sing song voice that unfortunately you did now recognize as Deadpool continued. “I see London, I see France, I see (Y/N)’s underpants!”
With your energy humming around you, Peter’s shirt you were wearing was now billowing up a little you realized. Indeed giving a full view to all those below you. You dropped back to the floor immediately, but didn’t power down, keeping the field around Remy as you turned to look at the several people now standing in your doorway.
“You know, this is exactly how those rumors start,” Ellie said in her usual dry tone, taking in the truly bizarre scene of the three of you. “Putting on some clothes might be a good first step. Or you know, at least closing the door.”
The girl otherwise known as Negasonic Teenage Warhead was never one to mince words, even to you all, her sort of superiors. Her girlfriend Yukio only stood beside her, smiling a bit sheepishly.
“Yeah, don’t mind us you little OT3, I just came back to bring Russel his stuff.” He motioned to the boy, who was now also staring at you all. “And your boss Charlie X said I had to have an escort, so I got my old buddies here Nega-angst and Yukio-chan. Oh and-”
Deadpool suddenly grabbed another man who had been standing behind them, bringing him to the front. “This is my all time best buddy Dopinder, he wanted a tour of mutant Hogwarts as well.”
“Hello.” The young man waved a bit shyly. “It is an honor to meet more of DP’s superhero allies.”
“Hey.” Peter said oddly to them after a moment, then looking back to you again. The randomness seemed to have snapped him out of his fixation on getting even with Remy at least for the moment. It now looked like he was waiting for guidance from you on what to do next.
You heard an audible sigh from Remy then as he spoke up. “I rather not destroy your sheets, cher. Truce for today?”
You glanced back to Peter first though before letting down the shield. Making sure he’d agree to untie him. Peter looked reluctant still, but eventually nodded.
And with that you powered down, your field around Remy disappearing as all the energy faded back inside you. In another instant he was completely untied, the sheet semi neatly back on your bed then. You knew some of the food had to have gone flying wherever when Peter had ripped off the bedsheet earlier in their scuffle. But you didn’t really care right now.
“Woah, woah. Is that the new MK game?” Wade just questioned suddenly, then seemingly oblivious to all else as he strode into your room as well.
Why no one had any boundaries today, you had no idea.
“Wait, we get video games too?” Russell also sounded impressed, just following.
“Some of us,” Ellie replied though, giving Peter a skeptical look. “That one might have had a five finger discount.”
Peter huffed at her, non committal on the truth of that statement though, “It’s the new one, yeah. The new DLC just added more characters too.”
You didn’t even care anymore honestly as Wade pulled off his mask and hopped immediately onto your and Peter’s bed, grabbing a controller. “Dibs on Johnny Cage, mother fuckers. Let daddy show you how it’s done.”
“Hey, I want to be Scorpion!” Russell replied, actually sounding like the fourteen year old he really was for once.
And you saw Peter was already digging out another controller from his gaming pile as he scoffed at them both. “Man, you can try. I’ll wipe the floor with you and buzzcut you down to bloody stumps with Kung Lao.”
“Dopinder, google Johnny Cage combos, stat!” Deadpool requested as his friend hurried in, dutifully sitting on the floor and pulling out a cell phone to do just that.
Remy was actually the only male in the room to not be sucked in as he gave you a little look while walking back out. “Later, petite. Sorry for real about the fuss. You know he just irks me.” He leaned in a little closer just to you though. “And I know you’re faithful. He just needs to leave me out of it. Quit readin’ dem damn gossip magazines, yeah?”
“Yes.” You agreed with a smile. A little optimism returning that maybe the two of them could be reasoned with after all. “See ya, Remy.”
He nodded, winking at both Ellie and Yukio as well before he slipped past them and out down the hall. Yukio giggled, but Ellie only rolled her eyes.
“Well, if you put some pants on, maybe there’s still some breakfast left down there. Want to go?” Ellie asked you, crossing her arms. She smirked then though, the guys now commentating and mocking one another like there was some big sporting match going on just a few feet from you. “Let Wade be Peter’s problem for a while, I think you’ve earned it.”
“Sounds like a plan.” You agreed without much hesitation. If Peter needed you, it’s not like it’d even take him two seconds to find you, even with the size of this house.
You did see him glance back ever so briefly as you dug some sweatpants out your dresser drawer and pulled them on though. You made an eating gesture and he nodded, understanding where you were going.
He also made a motion like drinking and you knew that meant he wanted you to bring him back some soda. The more sugar the better for him.
As you walked back downstairs with Ellie and Yukio, Ellie chuckled to herself a little. “You know Wade’s going to think Peter is his bff now. Better buckle up for that ride. Colossus can probably give you some pointers.”
You sighed, looking at the younger two girls. “We’ve survived everything that’s been thrown at us to this point. Could always be worse.”
“Oh yeah, it’ll get worse.” Ellie answered.
Yukio nodded, yet still smiling. “Wade is very special. And deadly.”
“Like a contagion,” Ellie added.
It still didn’t matter though. New, strange friends, or old sometimes combative friends. Gossip and rumors, or anything else. In the end you had to agree with Xavier as you so often usually did. As long as you and Peter kept strong together, none of that outside noise could ever tear you down. You had each other and that was all you needed.
dance me to the end of love (i)
word count: 4.3k
warnings: fem!oc, cursing, potential spoilers for the west wing if you've never seen the show
series masterpost: here
a/n: hi!! i am so incredibly happy to finally be putting this fic out into the world. it means an awful lot to me and i can't wait to share the little world i've created :)) x
Magdalene is content with where she’s ended up.
Denver is wonderful. Her friends are there, her cat is there, and it’s the perfect place for a fresh start. She arrived in the city nearly six years ago – a wide-eyed University of Denver freshman and has stayed put ever since. Her hometown of Aspen holds a few too many bad memories, but is close enough that she can return if an emergency calls for it. So far she hasn’t left, too engrossed in finishing her degree and moving on. There’s a job offer lined up with the university’s library upon graduation that Magdalene is ecstatic about. It means she gets to stay right where she is – where she’s comfortable.
☼☼☼☼
The sun might be shining as she exits her apartment building, but it’s cold for March. Magdalene pulls the thick scarf her best friend Bette got her for Christmas higher up her face and walks as quickly as possible to campus. There’s a brief meeting to attend with her advisor before grabbing lunch with Bette, and then her plan is to spend the rest of the day holed up in the library working on her thesis. It’s due in two weeks, with the defence in just over a month, and Magdalene is incredibly nervous. Though she’d gone through submitting her undergraduate thesis two years ago, presenting her master’s research was going to be a lot harder. She’s heard through the grapevine that the committees are being tough this year and she doesn’t want to fail.
Dr. Williams is waiting for her in his office with a smile on his face. He’s a tall man, with thin facial features and wire glasses that box him perfectly into the intimidating professor stereotype. “Miss Stevenson, please sit,” he gestures to the chair across from him.
“Gerald,” she sighs, “You can call me Magdalene, I don’t mind. Besides, it makes you quite the hypocrite if you insist I call you by your first name but you won’t use mine.” There’s no malice in her voice, just a decent amount of teasing.
The older man scoffs but concedes. “I suppose you’re right. Well then Magdalene, tell me, how are your final edits coming along?”
Magdalene spends nearly twenty minutes detailing all the elements she has tweaked since their last meeting, from the title to the citation style. She’s out of breath by the time she’s done, rambling at an impressive speed, and takes a big gasp of air while the professor mulls over her words. Dr. Williams doesn’t say anything, causing Magdalene to shift anxiously in her seat. “Sir, is there something wrong?”
He shakes his head. “Absolutely nothing,” he beams, “Everything is perfect. It’s a shame you don’t want to continue researching. You’d make a fabulous academic.”
The compliment makes Magdalene’s heart soar. It means a lot, especially coming from the person who has seen her cry over the oxford comma. “Thank you sir, but I belong in the practical realm. Someone has to file all the documents you obsessively scan.”
She leaves the building soon after, promising to stop by after she drops off the final draft in a few weeks. It’s a bit later than she expected and hopes Bette won’t be mad. There’s nothing the blonde hates more than poor time management, but Magdalene prays she’ll understand. It wasn’t that long ago and Bette was scheduling her own appointments with advisors on how to graduate. Barn Owl Book Company is located halfway between the school and her apartment, making it the perfect spot to meet. In addition to being a used book store, Barn Owl sports one of the best cafés in downtown Denver. Bette is perched delicately at her friend’s favourite seat, a bay window converted into a small nook, and typing furiously on her phone.
“Sorry I’m late,” Magdalene apologizes, “Williams talked a lot more than I expected him to.”
Bette looks up and smiles, shoving a cup in the other girl’s direction. “As always. How is he?”
Sliding into the booth, Magdalene fills her friend in on what’s been going on in their former professor’s life. Bette graduated with a minor in Classics, and it was Magdalene's major, but the former decided not to further her education and is instead doing full time charity work for the Colorado Avalanche. Her boyfriend Tyson is one of their star players, and the two of them are so smitten it makes Magdalene sick. Conversation quickly turns from school to life, which she’s grateful for.
“So,” Bette says, “Are you in for the trip this summer? I’ve got to confirm the reservation in a week or something.”
“I don’t know Bee, I'm going to be the new girl. Asking for time off like two months into the job would be rude.”
“Linny,” the blonde whines, “Please? I want you to come.”
Magdalene scowls. Bette knows just how much the nickname sours her mood but she chose to use it anyway. “Don’t call me that,” she snaps with quite a bite. “Can someone else take my spot if I decide not to go a little closer to the date?”
“Of course! Gravy said he’d fill an extra spot if one comes up so we don’t lose the deposit,” Bette blabs before trying to switch gears entirely. Magdalene cuts her off.
“Who’s Gravy?”
If her friend is exasperated by Magdalene’s lack of knowledge surrounding hockey, she doesn’t show it. Bette calmly explains that Gravy, who’s real name is Ryan, is a defenceman with the Avalanche and a good friend of Tyson’s. She also makes a point of mentioning that he’s single, to which Magdalene rolls her eyes. Bette has a masterplan for her life – which includes her best friend becoming romantically involved with an Avalanche player so the two of them can live the better half life together. As the best friend, Magdalene is constantly barraged with potential players who are looking to date. Once she went on a few dates with Mikko, but that ended fairly quickly when the two realized they were better as friends. Every time since she’s turned Bette down as gently as possible, not wanting to get involved with anyone. Her life is just starting, and Magdalene wants to be secure before settling down.
The conversation eventually shifts to what Magdalene plans to wear for both her thesis defence and graduation. Bette is fashion savvy, while Magdalene is decidedly not. Her everyday wardrobe consists of collared button-downs and sweater vests, which is supposedly never going to back a comeback, according to Bette at least. The blonde eventually wears Magdalene down, and secures a position as stylist for the graduation ceremony. There was an attempt at the thesis defence, but the other girl insists she needs to be as comfortable as possible on such a stressful occasion.
A glance to the clock on the opposite wall has Magdalene stretching her arms and giving an apologetic glance to her friend on the other side of the table. “I should go,” she says. “I’ve got to put in some serious work on my citations today, and you know Caligula doesn’t like it when I’m gone all day.”
Bette rolls her eyes, but there isn’t any frustration behind the gesture. “I swear to god Mags, your cat has more separation anxiety than I do. Speaking of, I’m supposed to pick Tyson up at the airport and I’m running behind.”
“Tell him I say hi,” Magdalene says as she wraps her arms around Bette for a quick hug.
The two girls part ways on the sidewalk, with Magdalene heading back to campus and Bette sliding into the sleek Audi she shares with her boyfriend. Headphones find their way into her ears, and Magdalene listens to a random comedy podcast. Once tucked safely inside the library she’ll put on her favourite lo-fi playlist and concentrate, but for now she just enjoys the funny anecdotes of stories past.
It’s quiet in the library for a Tuesday, though Magdalene isn’t complaining. Her favourite table, the one she swears up and down is the only reason she ever gets anything done, is open, and she all but sprints to place her bag on the worn leather chair. While setting up her work station a few of the librarians come over to offer their congratulations for her upcoming job. News certainly travels fast around here, Magdalene thinks, but accepts their generosity with a smile on her face. They leave her alone soon enough and the tedious work of double checking the formatting of every single citation in the sixty-five page paper begins.
Hours pass, and Magdalene stays working in the library until as late as she possibly can. Caligula is going to start to worry about the length of her absence soon and his anxiety response of knocking over plants is not a mess she feels like cleaning up. She packs up her laptop and walks the short distance home as fast as possible.
“Little boots, I’m home,” Magdalene parrots in a sing-song voice as she slips her jacket off her shoulders and onto the hanger. At the sound of his nickname, the small cat bounds into the entryway. “Hi darling, did you miss me?” Magdalene gets an obnoxiously loud purr in response that she takes it as a yes. She reaches down to pick up the tiny animal before continuing further into the apartment, scratching behind his ears as she does so. The two of them settle into the respectably sized couch, where they stay for the rest of the night watching reruns of The West Wing before Magdalene falls asleep.
☼☼☼☼
“You fucking did it!” Bette shrieks as she bounds towards her best friend. Magdalene braces herself for the oncoming assault, and manages to keep them both upright after Bette jumps into her arms.
Her thesis defence had just finished, and the committee found Magdalene a worthy candidate for the Master of Information Science qualification. The presentation itself was open to the public, so Bette and Tyson sat in the front row to support Magdalene, but were escorted out for the conversation that followed. The two girls had developed a code so the news could be shared in a subtle way, though Bette threw the original plan out the window as soon as she saw her friend give a sneaky thumbs up when the conference room door opened.
“Congrats Mags,” Tyson says sincerely, doing his best not to add to the growing spectacle, but Magdalene can tell he wants to give her a bone crushing hug.
“Thank you,” she smiles softly, “And thank you guys for coming. It means a lot.” As two of her closest friends, both Bette and Tyson know that her family situation is rocky at best, and having them act as her support system means more than she’ll ever be able to articulate.
The couple shares a knowing look before engulfing their friend in a hug. “We’re always going to be here for you,” Bette whispers, “No matter what.”
Magdalene’s smile is so genuine it crinkles her eyes as she wraps her arms around Bette and Tyson’s shoulders and leads them out the door and into the sunshine. The group continues to the parking lot, where they climb into Tyson’s car and drive off campus in the direction of Magdalene’s favourite restaurant. Though she had tried to convince her friends they didn’t need to celebrate, she failed, and Magdalene soon finds herself laughing hysterically over a plate of carbonara as Tyson tells a story about the shenanigans the team got up to on their last road trip.
There’s a game tonight, and Bette has somehow convinced her into attending. Magdalene knows she should go, expand her social horizons a little, but all she wants to do is curl up in bed and sleep for three weeks. Her one condition is that she can go home straight after the game without being guilted into following the group to whatever nightclub they’ll celebrate the win or drink away the loss in. Tyson has to get ready so he drops the two girls off at Magdalene's apartment complex. She’s in charge of getting Bette to the rink, and she’ll leave with her boyfriend after the game.
Once inside the confines of her home, Magdalene promptly lies on the floor. “Holy shit,” she sighs, “I did it. I fucking did it.”
“You did!” Bette says as she lies down beside her best friend. “I’m so fucking proud of you, and Tyson is too. Even if he won’t tackle you in public to prove it.”
The comment garners a laugh from Magdalene, which alerts Caligula to the presence of others in the apartment. He pads over the rug currently being occupied by two adults, and snuggles into the small space between them. Bette and Magdalene continue to lay there, petting the cat and looking back fondly on all the times Magdalene called her friend in tears because she didn’t think she could push herself any farther. Bette was always there to pick up the slack, editing whatever section Magdalene was working on or to bring over a hot meal. Her support earned her the top spot in the acknowledgements section of the thesis.
Ball Arena is already crawling with people when Magdalene pulls into the small lot for player’s and their families. Normally she parks with the general public, but Bette insists they watch this game from the better halves box, and these spaces are closer to that entrance.
“Stop dragging your feet,” the blonde chastises as Magdalene takes her time cutting the engine. “I want to get a glass of rosé before they sell out.”
Sighing, Magdalene follows her orders. “Don’t you have a special bar in the box?” she asks while locking the car.
“Yeah, but the other girls are absolute fiends. They’ll drink it all before we get there with no remorse.”
The girls climb the stairs to the better halves box, Bette chatting excitedly about the game, but Magdalene stops just before the entrance. She’s met most of the others on multiple occasions and has nothing to worry about, but she can’t help but feel anxious. Her life is so different than everyone else’s in the space, and it feels like cheating when she’s there because she isn’t romantically involved with anyone on the roster. Bette likes to joke that she’s her better half, but Magdalene knows it’s said just to calm her nerves.
“It’ll be fine,” Bette whispers while squeezing her hand, “And if you get too uncomfortable we can find some seats in the nosebleeds.”
Once inside Magdalene’s nerves dissipate. Most of the other wives and girlfriends pay her no mind, but the ones that are especially close to Bette congratulate her on passing her defence. It warms her heart a little, and the small group Magdalene finds herself in settles down to watch the game unfold.
It’s a fairly intense one between Colorado’s division rival St. Louis. Both teams are fighting for first place in the conference, and a win for the Avalanche would put them three points ahead of the Blues instead of one. Players from both sides are amped up, and more than once a scrum at the net has turned into a dog-pile. Colorado is outplaying the other team, but have still managed to find themselves a goal short heading into the final period. At the buzzer Tyson takes the face-off and is immediately shoved by a member of the opposite team. He goes down hard, and Bette squeezes Magdalene’s hand so tightly she fears it will lose blood flow. Silence falls over the arena as Tyson doesn’t immediately get up. The inside of lip finds its way between her teeth and Magdalene bites down hard, worried about her friend. She’s so focussed on Tyson that she doesn’t notice a fight breaking out.
“Holy shit, Gravy is going to town!”
The remark is made by someone Magdalene recognizes as Gabe Landeskog’s wife, and it makes her peel her eyes off of Bette’s worried features and scan the ice for some action. Sure enough, a very tall man is laying right hooks to someone who looks significantly smaller than him on the Avalanche blue line. The referees let the fight continue until Tyson drags himself off the ice and onto the bench before separating the men and throwing them in the penalty box. Magdalene can tell words are still being exchanged from both sides of the glass, but she’s more focussed on the fact Tyson doesn’t make his way to the dressing room – a good sign that allows Bette to drop her hand and let out a shaky breath.
Nothing of great importance happens until MacKinnon ties the game with seven minutes left. It happens while the Avalanche are short handed, and the goal seems to light a fire beneath the team. Magdalene may not know much about hockey, but she’s smart enough to notice the insane amount of energy all the players suddenly have. Time ticks by slowly and before she realizes it, the final face-off is taking place. Luckily it’s in the St. Louis zone and won by Colorado. The puck is tipped back to the same player who got in the fight for Tyson, Gravy, and he one times it right into the back of the net. The buzzer goes off not a second later, and the entire team piles on top of the player who just won them the game.
Bette and Magdalene join in the shrieks of the other partners, jumping from their seats in excitement. Eventually they make their way down to the hallway outside the locker room and lean against the brick while they wait for Tyson.
“You don’t have to stay,” Bette insists, “I can wait by myself.”
Magdalene shakes her head. “No way. I want to make sure he’s okay too. What good is a friend with a black eye?”
The other girl laughs at her friend’s stubbornness but doesn’t shoo her away. Once Magdalene has made a decision it’s hard to get her to sway from it, and Bette knows better than to push. Besides, who is she to deny her friend a bit more social interaction? Magdalene has spent the past six years practically holed up in the library and deserves to stand in a crowded hallway.
The friends chat idly while they wait, with Magdalene sharing some of the most ridiculous questions she got asked in her defence interview that morning. She’s mid story when Tyson exits the dressing flanked by a man dressed sharply in all black.
“Hey guys,” Tyson greets, dipping his head to place a kiss to Bette’s cheek before doing an elaborately goofy handshake with Magdalene.
“Good game baby,” Bette compliments sweetly. She then turns her attention to the boy standing awkwardly on the fringes. “You too Graves.”
He smiles shyly, muttering out a small thanks. It’s then he seems to notice the final member of the group, and offers his hand in greeting. “Hi, I’m Ryan.”
“Nice to meet you. I’m Magdalene.”
She puts two and two together on the walk to her car. The Ryan Magdalene just met is the same who will take her spot on the trip, fought someone in Tyson’s defence, and scored the game winning goal. Though they’ve only said a few words, she likes him. He seems genuine, and those people are the rarest to find.
☼☼☼☼
Magdalene is walking across a graduation stage for the final time in two days. However, she can’t find anyone to take the third ticket. The University of Denver has a stupid rule where all graduates must have three guests attend the ceremony. Bette and Tyson are obviously occupying two of Magdalene’s seats, but she’s having trouble filling the third.
“I can ask Tys if one of the guys is free,” Bette shrugs. The two girls are sitting in the window of Barn Owl drinking iced lattes and discussing what Magdalene should wear to the ceremony.
“It’s okay,” Magdalene says, “I don’t want to bother anyone. Maybe I’ll just ask June.”
Her friend’s eye roll so far back into her head Magdalene isn’t sure they won’t stay there. “You can’t ask your boss to watch you graduate Mags! Besides, Gravy owes Tyson a favour and was already looking for something to do. I’m sure he won’t mind wasting a few hours as long as he gets drinks out of it.”
There isn’t a better option, so even though she barely knows the guy, Magdalene agrees. “Make sure he gets this?" she sighs, handing her friend an envelope with a single ticket in it. "I have to go. Caligula should be done at the vet soon.”
“Say hello to little boots for me,” Bette giggles as she waves goodbye.
Hours later, tucked into her couch with a glass of wine in one hand and Caligula playing with the fingers on the other, Magdalene realizes she invited a complete stranger to her graduation and how that could be a terrible idea. Sure, Ryan sounds like a great guy from the way Bette and Tyson talk about him, but he’s only ever spoken three words to her. Since that game she’s gone out with the team a few times, but the man with the piercing stare is yet to make an appearance. Magdalene considers that perhaps he’s more like her than his profession gives him credit for, and she feels a twinge of guilt about being worried he’d cause a scene at the ceremony.
There isn’t any more time for her to fret over the third and final guest on the list. At the last minute Bette decides there’s nothing in Magdalene’s closet that’s suitable for her to wear, so a trip to a local second-hand store ensues. While it’s nice that her friend has taken their carbon footprints into consideration, Magdalene wishes it didn’t have to happen an hour and a half before the ceremony is supposed to start.
“We have to be there in twenty minutes Bette,” she frets, tapping her foot nervously against the tile flooring.
If they can’t find whatever it is Bette’s looking for, Magdalene will have to walk across the stage in denim cutoffs and a faded t-shirt with Neil Young’s face on it, which is something she’s hoping to avoid at all costs.
“Have no fear, Mags,” she says with a knowing glint in her eye, “For I have found it.” Bette holds up a hanger that is holding a beautiful long sleeve dress adorned with a whimsical floral print.
Magdalene can’t help the gasp that escapes from her. “It’s beautiful,” she breathes, “But let’s hope it fits.”
The dress does in fact fit, and the workers are kind enough to let her wear it out of the store. Bette drives at a speed that might not be the safest to travel at in downtown Denver, but she gets to the school with minutes to spare. She shoos her friends out of the car so she can go pick up Tyson and Ryan, and Magdalene checks in with little hassle. The pool of graduates is fairly small, so she chats with a few classmates while they wait for the call to put their gowns on. Time passes quicker than expected, and soon Magdalene is being directed to her seat. She zones out while the dean gives a congratulatory speech and they go through the first few names. At one point she looks backwards into the crowd to find Bette, Tyson, and Ryan all giving her a thumbs up. The nerves she didn’t even know she had settle.
A faculty member signals for Magdalene’s row to stand up, and she smoothes her dress before dutifully following the person in front of her. Giddiness bubbles in her stomach at the thought of being done school forever. A hand from the stage crew give a cue, and Magdalene appears on the stage as her accomplishment is broadcast through the microphone.
“Magdalene Stevenson is being awarded a Masters in Information Science in Archival Studies and Records Management.” It feels so good to finally be finished that she lets a tear slip as she shakes the hand of the staff member handing her the package with her diploma in it.
The rest of the ceremony passes in a blur, and before Magdalene knows it her friends are approaching to congratulate her. Bette and Tyson wrap her in a tight hug, murmuring praise in her ears. Ryan stands awkwardly to the side before Bette drags him into the celebration. The four of them stand in the courtyard where the ceremony was for much longer than needed. Bette is crying enough to refill Sloan Lake if there is ever a drought and is yet to let go of Magdalene’s figure.
It’s only when the event staff ask them to leave so they can tear down the stage does Magdalene turn to leave campus for the last time as a student. She’ll be back in a few weeks as an employee, but deep down she knows this is the last time she’ll ever feel such a deep connection to the place.
“Victory is mine, victory is mine! Great day in the morning people, victory is mine!” Magdalene yells, quoting Josh Lyman as she skips down the path towards Bette’s car.
Both Bette and Tyson are confused at the sudden outburst, not knowing what she’s talking about, but Ryan responds without missing a beat. “Should I bring you all the muffins and bagels in the land?” His response doesn’t clear anything up, but it elicits a giant smile from Magdalene, who laughs and nods in confirmation.
Sitting in the back of Bette’s Audi, on the way to a graduation party she’s supposed to know nothing about, Magdalene decides that she wants to get to know Ryan Graves better. From what she’s garnered from Bette and Tyson he’s a class act, standing up for friends and giving good advice. He likes The West Wing and showed up to a stranger’s graduation, so how bad can he be?
Thanks, James - Nick Robinson
Summary: You are an up and coming director who recently wrote and directed a major film that is coming out soon starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jennifer Garner. While you are on "The Late Late Show with James Corden" you start talking about your interest in other actors; Nick Robinson in particular.
Word Count: 1.3k
Warning: Fluffy sarcasm.
Masterlist
Once you heard James Corden announce your name all you could hear was the cheering of the crowd. Not even your black pumps could be heard as you walked across the stage. You shook James's hand and plopped down on the couch cushion closest to James, crossing your legs.
"(Y/N) (Y/L/N)!" James said again this time looking at you.
"James Corden!" you laughed, not knowing what to say.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you. There's a lot of buzz on the internet about your new movie, please tell us about it."
"Well, The Grudge Alliance is a film about this group of people who are really into the hardcore rock bands but live in a very conservative, Christian community. Basically, the story of any kid who's a fan of bands like Black Veil Brides and know what it's like to be interested in something that no one else understands." You briefly explain.
"I see and this is your first movie production right?"
"Yes, this is my first professional, movie production that I was in control of and I was completely responsible for." You laughed.
"And you got Jennifer Garner and Robert Downey Jr. both starring together... they're enemies right?"
"Yes Robert Downey Jr. is the dad of one of the kids in the Grudge Alliance; and he kind of helps support the kids when the people who think that the kids who listen to rock and dress in all black are children of Satan; i.e. Jennifer Garner."
"Brilliant."
"Don't ask me how I was so lucky to get these incredible actors into my first film, I have no clue how it happened. But I don't think I would be sitting here talking to you if it weren't for them."
"Well speaking of major actors-"
"Oh my God is Ryan Reynolds here?" You jokingly asked, looking around in excitement.
"No no no... unfortunately, he's not here although the entire internet knows about your crush on him and his wife."
Your eyes widened at the realization of what James was getting at.
"Noooo I know what you're doing please don't go there." You begged.
"I have to! After all, you started on YouTube making short films, some even winning at multiple festivals but you also did normal, YouTuber content where you talked about your celebrity crushes."
"Ugh... yes, I did..." You groaned, face undoubtedly turning red by now.
"I just wanted to go through a few and talk about some of the celebrities mentioned in your video."
"Oh boy... okay."
"Okay first up Mark Wahlberg."
"Yes! Oh my God! Love him." You laughed, still embarrassed but embracing the moment. James and the audience laughed with you.
"He was recently in Instant Family."
"Yes, I saw that it was great. I love films that are based on a true story. I also loved him in Deepwater Horizon. He's come a long way from Marky Mark." You laughed.
"Yes, he has indeed." James laughed, "Okay next one, Tom Holland."
"Cute!" You said abruptly causing everyone to laugh once again. "I'm gonna get some hate for saying this but personally he's my favorite Spider-Man. Especially with that 64 pack." James laughed at your comment on Tom's physical fitness.
"I'm not even going to get into the band members you mentioned."
"Good cause we'd be here for hours if you did."
"So last one: Nick Robinson."
Your eyes widened and you sucked in a huge gulp of air, your grip tightening on the edge of the chair.
"Oof he's a cutie." You smirked, hiding the bottom half of your face behind your mouth while maintaining eye contact with James who tipped his head back and laughed.
"I'm serious I've seen him in a few things before but once Love, Simon came out I- ughhhh. I'm having such a fangirl moment." You laughed. "I mean that film was so freaking powerful and I feel like Nick did the role justice and I mean he's a pretty attractive guy if we're being honest, I'm not gonna lie." You laughed again with James.
"You also went on to explain your perfect first date in that video."
"Yes, I did." You nodded.
"Which before had been going to see some kind of a show or concert."
"Yes, I thought it was something out of the ordinary. The typical dinner and a movie seemed incredibly boring and at the time I didn't drink coffee so a coffee date wasn't ideal but my friend recently got a job at Starbucks and turned me onto ice mochas so the coffee date became more appealing after that."
"Does Nick Robinson drink coffee?" James asked like he was a teenage girl at a sleepover.
"I don't know!" you laughed, "How would I know what he does or doesn't like? I've never spoken to him..."
"Well, I don't know he seems like a coffee drinker."
"I mean there were a lot of iced coffees being ordered in Love, Simon but I don't know if Nick actually consumed any of it and even if he did that doesn't mean he likes coffee."
"Oh alright fine..." James sighed, defeated by your reason of logic.
"Well, now I'm preoccupied with the idea of being on a coffee date with Nick Robinson. Thanks."
"I could see it happening it'd be very aesthetically pleasing." You laughed at James's comment.
"I'll never be able to talk to him now. After this interview, you know he'll see it, especially with Twitter nowadays. I'll never be able to work with him because it'll just be awkward and full of coffee jokes."
"Well, you don't know that..."
"What's going on?"
"What do you mean?" James asked, trying to play dumb.
"You keep pushing this idea of a coffee date with Nick like there's some scheme going on that I don't know about..." You look around suspiciously.
"I would do no such thing..."
It was at that moment that Nick Robinson walked out and made his way over to the couch you were sitting on. The crowd "oohed" and "awwed" while you covered your face in both hands, praying you'd disappear forever. He was dressed in an all black suit, hair slicked back, and carried a rose. James covered his shit eating grin behind his cue cards. When Nick finally reached the couch he knelt down before you.
"(Y/N)?"
"Yes?" You asked, barely able to say loud enough for someone to hear. You were busy trying not to cry.
"I've been a fan of your videos for a long time now..."
"Oh no!" You laughed, even more embarrassed that Nick had seen your YouTube videos.
"And I wanted to DM you but thought maybe it'd get looked over with others."
You were frozen in place. You couldn't move. You were too busy being both embarrassed and blown away by the turn of events. And your perspiration had now accentuated.
"So I kneel here before you to ask you a simple question really. Would you like to go get coffee some time?" He smiled.
You couldn't help but laugh at how he delivered his inquiry. You looked at James to see if this was some sort of cruel joke that you were a part of.
"Is this for real? Or just some bit that I wasn't to know about?" You asked them both but looked at James.
"No this is 100% real I swear," James said, throwing his hands up in surrender. You then looked at Nick.
"100 percent." Nick agreed.
"Well, in that case, assuming you are a coffee drinker, I would love to go get coffee some time." You smiled, accepting the rose.
The crowd applauded. Nick smiled and sat on the couch cushion next to you; turning to give you a hug as this was the first time you two had met let alone talked. When you released each other you looked down at the rose now in your hands, biting your lip. Your attention brought back to James as he started speaking.
"Well isn't this wonderful! It's like out of a movie or something!"
"I can't believe this just happened." You laughed anxiously.
"Well, I believe I owe you a huge thanks for squeezing this into the show. I really didn't want to be just another DM." Nick said to James.
"Yeah, thanks, James." You agreed, smiling at Nick.
Part three? I wonder how that whole car ride is? Maybe they stop to get stuff or they have alone time in the car?
I love that y’all are getting involved with this story! It makes me so excited to write!!
Masterlist
Previously (Pt. 2)
(Also this is the Grayson I think of for this story ;))
And the car ride is pretty awkward between the two of them. Of course, Grayson messes around with everyone, trying to make it seem like you two aren’t drowning in the silent fight you’re having.
Until you stop at a Circle K (if y’all don’t have these where you live I’m sorry but we have hundreds of them). And everyone gets out for a bathroom and snack break. You offer to charge the car, seeing as that water bottle of *special liquid* that you brought got put in the cooler in the trunk, so not only are you nowhere near as tipsy as you want to be, but you also don’t need to use the restroom.
You put the pump in and decide to pop the trunk to get your bottle out. Grabbing the bottle out, you take a long sip of it, trying to perfect your poker face so no one in the car knows you’re secretly getting drunk.
“I knew you were holding out on me,” You yelp at the deep voice behind you, causing some of the Pinot to spill. You glare up at Grayson and he laughs, holding up a finger to you as a silent ‘wait’.
You raise a brow as he reopens the cooler, grabbing out the matching blue water bottle to your purple. You realize you subconsciously brought the water bottle you bought with Grayson right before everything happened.
“You have to work on your poker face though,” he states as he takes a sip of his, not even flinching.
He tilts it towards you and you sniff it hesitantly, your nose scrunching up at the smell of straight tequila, you cough, pulling back, “oh my god you are such an alcoholic!”
“Says the girl drinking Pinot out of a water bottle,” he smirks and I roll my eyes, “this is nice. Feels like old times.”
Your smile drops and you looking away, biting your lip, “Grayson, I-“ the beep of the car makes you stop, walking back over to the front seat you see the cars almost finished charging.
“I should go let everyone know the cars almost ready,” you state, trying to get away from Grayson for a little bit.
He grabs you arm softly and pulls you back to him, your back pressed to the car as you look up at him. He moves a piece of hair out of your face, “Y/n, I haven’t stopped thinking about you. I’ve wanted you for so long,” he whispers
What. The. Fuck? You gape at him as you watch his eyes, looking for any indication that he’s lying but the sincerity shining in his eyes scares you, “Grayson-“ he cuts your soft whisper off when he starts to lean in, his eyes fluttering from your eyes to your lips.
You catch yourself leaning in as well, eyes fluttering closed as his lips touch yours. His lips are feather-soft against yours. You gasp as his hands grip your waist and he slips his tongue past your parted lips gently.
You move your arms up his sides, holding his shoulder with one and the other goes to his neck, pulling slightly on the short hair at his nape. Something shifts as he grabs your thigh, hitching your leg up on his waist and molding himself to you.
“Gray,” you sigh against his lips as you pull away to catch your breath which gets stuck in your throat when he starts leaving small kisses up and down your throat, sucking on your jaw for a second before moving back up to your lips.
“God, I miss you calling me that,” he breathes, taking your lips back in his. Coaxing all the pain from the past two weeks out with his lips as you push against him harder. Your heart thunders in your ears and Grayson’s hand moves to your hair to grip. His other hand lands next to your head as leverage against the car.
The car beeping again, slightly louder pulls you back to reality. You push him slightly, your body cold after his warmth leaves you. You slip out under Grayson’s arm, peering into the window you see the cars fully charged and pull the plug out, putting it back at the station.
You look up at Grayson but have to look away quickly at the sight of his chest heaving a little, his lips red and swollen, pupils dilated, and hair a complete mess. You bite your lip and point back at the gas station, walking away silently.
When you get to the door, you can’t help but look back at Grayson. You see him pacing next to the car, hand going through his hair as he mumbled something to himself. You shake your head and open the door, the air conditioned room helping to cool your flushed skin.
“Hey, y/n! We were just about to head back out to you, what’s up?” Maya smiles at you with a water in her hand.
“Just- thought I’d tell you the car is charged. I’m going to use the bathroom really quick,” you point to the small door labeled ‘Restroom’ and slip in before they question it.
Leaning on the sink, you look at your messy hair, swollen lips, and red cheeks. You look like you tried to run a marathon. You’ve always wanted to know what kissing Grayson was like- sure, you’ve seen him kiss a fling every now and then but that- you’ve never seen him kiss anyone like that before.
And what the hell did he mean by ‘I’ve always wanted you’? If he always wanted you- why didn’t he say that when he had the chance at the party? Sighing, you splash your face with some cold water and take a deep, steadying breath.
“You ready?” Ryan asks, “Everyone one else is at the car. I said I’d wait for you,” he smiles and you smile back.
You’ve always had a soft spot for Ryan. How couldn’t you? He’s naturally a good guy, “Yeah, I’m good.”
He throws his arm around your shoulders as you walk out, “By the way, whatever happened between you and Gray has him fucked up. I’ve never seen him so beaten up when you two were fighting before.”
Turning you look at Ryan, eyebrows coming together, he squeezes your shoulder and smiles, “Don’t say anything to Grayson about it though, he made us promise not to say anything.”
“I-uh-okay?” You say, confused by the sudden admission.
Ryan puts his finger to his lip, “shhh,” you laugh at the overreaction, nodding at him.
“I got it,” you smile, looking back at the car to see Grayson leaning next to the open back door, jaw clenched and eyes dark.
Woah who pissed in his cereal? You raise a brow at him but he just shakes his head, getting into the back seat, “I think we made him mad,” Ryan sings and laughs, going to the other side of the car and getting in.
Why would he be mad about Ryan being...well, Ryan? I sigh and get in as well, sitting next to Grayson he looks out the window, ignoring my existence.
I stretch out a little, accidentally hitting my arm to Grayson’s and he grunts lowly, pulling his arm away. I’m taken aback, “who the hell pissed in your tequila?” I whisper-shout at him.
“I don’t know- maybe you should ask Ryan,” I scoff and he rolls his eyes.
“You are so childish. You know that? I am not your property- though I’m starting to feel like it. We need to have a serious talk about your lack of respect for me and my feelings,” I say, crossing my arms, surprised at my dominance.
What can I say? I’m tired of all these games. My subconscious shrugs. Grayson rolls his eyes again and mumbles something, clenches his jaw, and then looks back out his window.
I sigh, deciding to let him pout. I lean my head against the headrest and watch as we slowly pull out the gas station. I feel even worse about this trip now than I did when I first found out I was trapped in a car with him.
A/n: not exactly how I wanted to end it but I felt so bad this took so long. Who knew the last three days were going to be the most emotionally-draining days of the month? Anywho- hope y’all enjoy. Someone play ‘Circles’ by Post Malone because I’m seeing a pattern develop 👀
A World of Our Own Pt.05
It’s Only a Spark
09/10/2020
Pairing: Bucky x Reader Word Count: 5,114
Warnings: nudity, slight angst, pining, fluff
A/N: We’re back y’all! Awooo is back on. I’m sorry it’s taken so long to get back to this story but it won’t be a super long one. We’re talking less than ten chapters. I really want to start working on my original fiction because I want to publish, probably self-publish on Amazon or something. Fanfiction is fun but I can’t really sell it since it’s not really mine and I really want writing to be my future. Anywho, I hope you enjoy this next chapter! It’s been a long time coming. xoxo If you reblog thanks for helping me spread my work!
Please DO NOT REPOST my stories. Reblogs are welcome!
Early morning beach walks, heat-soaked sand warming the bottom of your feet as it shifts and hisses with each step you take along the shoreline, is one thing that you can honestly admit to loving.
Being stranded on an uncharted island is not exactly great. Apart from the lack of proper vitamins—though you and Bucky had been making it work and with the knowledge of boar now, there’s your protein—no ice cubes, and no air conditioning, there are some things that you enjoy here.
These walks are one.
You enjoyed last night.
It’s been two weeks since Ryan came to live with you and Bucky, and every night is spent waiting for Bucky to sneak into the fuselage to come and hold you while you sleep.
Well, last night had been a little different. You’d fallen asleep with his head buried against your neck, your arms around his impossibly wide shoulders. Last night he’d let you see more of that vulnerability in him. The inescapable truth that even though he’s making all this work for the two of you—now three—he wants off this island too.
As you come to a stop, you take in the sky. Along the horizon painted around the bearably bright white-orange orb that is the sun, is a glowing and stunning fire red that fades out into a burnt orange, a splash of burgundy and gray before it changes into the deep purple night sky.
It’s so beautiful. This sunrise, bringing with it a new day of promise. A new day of secret looks and lingering touches.
Your mind is flooded with them. Each one more precious than the last.
Bucky hands you your food pack and he holds his hand over yours, fingers overlapping, for two seconds too long. At lunch he sits close. Knees touching before he leans back on his hands and one is so conveniently placed behind you so that it’s almost like he’s got his arm around you.
So many tiny hints that you’ve carefully calculated and added together and realize that Bucky must feel like you do. There’s no other explanation for it.
Maybe, if he were just as touchy feely with Ryan then you might consider it a possibility that he’s just that outgoing. That affectionate. But he only does this with you. He comes to your bed at night—thank goodness.
Last night it had been very clear that he wanted you to hug him, face buried in your neck or pressed tentatively against your chest until he relaxes enough that you can ask him how he’s feeling.
You chew on your scratchy chapped lip, watching as the water changes from dark turquoise to crystal green.
What will Bucky think when he wakes up and you aren’t beside him?
Usually it’s the other way around. Bucky is always gone when you wake up. Last night you’d been woken up by painful memories turned dreams. A life previously lived before the world had fallen apart.
Somehow, you find yourself being grateful for it. All of it. Because it somehow brought you here. To Bucky.
But you’d needed air and that’s why you’re on this beach, earlier than you normally are.
You can’t be imagining things, right? Bucky seems like he likes you too. It’s a little unfair to him if you’re honest. Who else can he like here? Ryan?
Nothing you’ve seen has indicated that he’s gay. If he’s bi, then maybe Ryan but Bucky seems to bristle every time Ryan comes near the two of you when that special tension begins to build.
Are you reading into things too deeply?
Frustrated you slide your hand up into your hair, yanking on it in annoyance as you quickly sweep through it and begin to strip.
Just a quick swim.
Bucky stirs, reaching for you, knowing he’ll have to hurry out of here in a minute to avoid the questions that Ryan will no doubt ask if he spots him coming out of the fuselage.
Several times, Bucky has nearly told him that he likes you. That you’re his. But he can’t. He hasn’t even told you that he likes you. What if he tells Ryan all of that and then you don’t feel the same?
Bucky thinks…he hopes you feel the same. It seems as if you do.
But in the busy hours of the day when he’s shaping clay and cooking bricks for the hut and you’re weaving the thatch for the roof, he looks up to find you smiling, laughing, or happily chatting with Ryan.
The two of you have hit it off so well and he cannot deny the chemistry that the two of you share. There’s a sparkle in both your eyes when he finds you talking. A spark. An option.
You’re the one that gets to make the choice here. You’re the one that has the right to tell either of them, or both of them, no.
So as Bucky reaches out for you, craving the soft caress of your body and hands as they stroke his hair sleepily, his heart gives a fearful lurch when his hands make no purchase in their search.
He sits up, a panic setting in as he looks around frantically.
Calm down, Bucky. She’s probably just outside.
Only you aren’t. As he emerges, he observes the long since dead cinders of the campfire. His eyes scan the area and he spots Ryan’s blanket rolled up and propped against the driftwood trunk he'd snuggled up to last night.
Where the fuck-? Bucky’s mind reels again. Calm down, Bucky. She’s probably just down by the beach.
Only you aren’t!
Where the hell is she?!
Bucky moves along the length of the spot he'd picked for the hut. Just at the edge of the dense jungle, sturdier ground to give the hut a fighting chance against any storms that may come around.
The sand is undisturbed. His empty clay trough has no water. The palm fronds you’d been tearing fibers from to weave the thatch roofing sits untouched.
There’s also no Ryan.
Suddenly he pick it up. His ears prickle at the sound of your laugh.
He launches himself to the left, ears straining to get it all more clearly.
Now he hears a more masculine tenor that mixes and blends with your own sweet sound.
His heart gives a wild clench as he takes several steps in your direction but stops and waits, eyes trained on the curve all the way down the southern shore.
It takes a few moments because you’re still far away. You’re both laughing, saying something he can’t make out then laughing again.
Bucky clenches his fists, metal screeching in protest.
They’re just walking. Keep it together.
He knows that he should keep his cool. You’d just spent all night sleeping in his arms. You’ve spent the past few months with him, depending on him. You’d declared how much you need him and-shit…
You and Ryan round the large rocks in the distance, just as he realizes that he hasn’t told you how much he needs you. How much you mean to him. He’d only just decided that he really likes you and needs to tell you but what if he’s too late?
What if you think you’ve been a burden?
He hasn’t always been nice.
Fuck.
He's taken care of you. He’s made sure that you’ve wanted for nothing, at least in the way of safety and food—though you’ve done that for him too.
Being nice however, he could have done better. He can do better.
You and Ryan get closer and he can see your skin glistening in the morning sun.
You’ve gone for your swim and Bucky’s suddenly full of fearful rage as he considers what must have happened to have you two walking back together.
He can almost picture you swimming in the sparkling turquoise water. Your naked body is silhouetted against the rising sun but he can imagine that every curve of your body had stood in sharp contrast to the bright rays.
Even in his memories—fond memories that he will never admit to thinking about as much as he does—he can see the peaks of your bare breasts. He can see the curves of your hips, your butt, your neck exposed as you throw your head back when you resurface.
His neck feels hot all of a sudden and he burns hotter when his mind is filled with the image of Ryan coming upon such an exquisite sight.
He would have stood on the beach, probably watching you for much longer than you’ll probably ever realize. Ryan probably cleared his throat when he had his fill and you would have turned maybe expecting Bucky?
Bucky hopes.
Then you’d have ducked under the surface when you realized it wasn’t Bucky but with the way he knows you and Ryan are, that innocent lilt in your voice. The meaningless flirting…
You would have come out of the water after having asked Ryan to turn his back and Ryan would have stolen a peek of your perfect form when you’d turned your back to him as you pulled on your underwear and then slipped back into that summer floral dress you’d been wearing when the plane went down.
The colors have faded a little and the bottom is just as torn as ever. You’ve taken to wearing shorts underneath as it seems to keep getting shorter and shorter the more work you do in it, but it keeps you cool so it’s a favorite of yours.
Your hair is still damp, Ryan’s shoulder bumping yours as the two of you casually walk his way.
Ryan leans closer towards you and says something that Bucky can’t hear but he can see the way it flusters you and you reach over to push him away. Ryan is sent sideways, his feet walking into the shoreline where he splashes only a little before he hurries back towards you and nudges your shoulder again but then reaches around to grab both of your arms to steady you.
He drops them right away, responding to the way you curl in on yourself at his touch, but it’s enough of an embrace that Bucky’s heart gives an ache.
What’s wrong with me? Bucky wonders, knowing that he’s completely in love with you but unable to understand how it happened.
His eyes are glue to your pretty face, the stunning smile that stretches your lips as you and Ryan exchange pleasant conversation, but Bucky can’t care enough to hear what the two of you are saying.
Your skin is glowing in the morning sun as it bounces off the layer of tiny seawater droplets.
If he could have thought up the image of perfection, he knows that he could not have dreamt you up. Yet, he knows that you are it. You’re the epitome of his desires and not just physically. Of course, that part of himself has awoken with you always so close and so exposed in the literal sense.
He’s seen more of your body than he has of any other woman’s in his life, ever maybe.
Sure, there’d been a dalliance here and there in the back of a powder blue Cadillac, but those girls hadn’t undressed. Bunch of dresses pushed up around their waists as the fluffy scratchy fabrics underneath had scratched at his neck and face.
Yes, he has enjoyed the sight of you, but it goes beyond that now.
His attachment, his need comes from your own. In your eyes he can see you search for him, needing him just as he does. You’ve become the other half of his heart. The part that had lost all purpose when Hydra had twisted him mind into the Soldier.
Hearts were for beating. Staying alive. Nothing more.
Until you.
Then it began to hurt and pine and want again. It began to soften with affection at every corny joke, every lingering touch, every sweet chuckle.
You’ve wormed your way under his skin and there’s no way he can keep pretending that he doesn’t already think of you as his. Just as he’s already yours.
“…bucky?...Bucky…?” You sound far away but you’re in front of him, walking closer, your mouth moving but he almost doesn’t hear you.
“Is he alright?” Ryan asks, his voice distant too.
“I don’t know.” You frown, concern turning the corners of your lips down. “Bucky?”
“Ya alright, mate?” Ryan reaches over and gives Bucky’s right shoulder a soft slap, but the gesture doesn’t even move his massive body.
Bucky’s gaze is pull to him and Bucky sees red.
~~~~~~~~~~
Your heart is pounding with fear as you watch the glare that Bucky fixes on Ryan.
Ryan shrinks back a step, still looking a bit concerned by Bucky’s strange stoic stare. However, with Bucky’s sudden flare of rage, you’re almost certain that he’s going to deck him. Bucky is going to punch Ryan, right in the mouth. You just know it.
Instead, Bucky marches between the two of you, separating you with his large body.
As he passes he takes hold of your hand, the metal cool compared to the sun soaked warmth of your skin, and pulls you along down the beach.
“Bucky!” You gasp.
“Where ya going?” Ryan asks, turning to watch the two of you go with his arms thrown out to the sides as his confusion grows.
“I’m not-Can you get the bottles of water from camp?” You call back to him, tripping over your feet a little as you try to match Bucky’s pace.
Reaching out, you wrap your free hand around his metal bicep to get more balance.
“Ya, alright.” Ryan calls back.
“Bucky where are we going?” You demand.
“To check the fish nets.” He explains shortly.
“I already did that.” Ryan retorts, raising his voice so that you can both hear him as Bucky pulls you along further and further.
“To get some fruit then.” Bucky counters.
You realize now that he wants to get you alone, so you turn to follow him without resistance.
Bucky doesn’t speak until you’re both far away from the beach by the hut. He turns you into the small break in the trees where you normally come to pick bananas and mangoes.
Dropping your hand he immediately stoops down and begins to rifle through the fallen mangoes, squeezing them gently to see if they are ripe or spoiled.
“Bucky?” You sigh, watching him ignore you for a bit before you sigh and move to help with the fruit.
You’re not sure how he expects you to carry more than two or three with no basket. Minutes pass. Five, ten, fifteen minutes of sifting through fallen fruit before your arms are full and with a sigh you drop them and reach down to rip more of your dress to wrap them up and carry them more easily.
You’re not very careful with your tearing or as precise as Bucky when he did it that first time all those months ago, so you tear too much and the rip on one side runs all the way up your side exposing your skin.
“What are you doing?!” Bucky gasps, dropping the fruits in his arms as he rushes for you.
The plop, thud, plop of the fruits draws your eyes before his massive form is beside you pushing your hands away from your dress. The shorts underneath are more visible now and tattered like all of your clothes. They’re more durable made of jeans, but you use them to do everything so they’re your most worn piece of clothing.
Your arms fall limply at your sides as your patience wears thin. You chew on your lip hard, urging your voice to be even as you look at him, your eyes searching his furrowed brow, those frantic blue steel eyes.
He’s got something on his mind but he’s not sharing and it’s really starting to piss you off!
As he holds your dress closed, he meets your eyes, hesitating to keep hold of your gaze.
“What’s going on?” You wonder.
“Nothing.” Bucky shrugs. “Don’t rip your dress anymore. Don’t you like this one?”
“Bucky…” You sigh again, urging yourself to have patience.
There’s a sudden shift in his expression, an anger that flashes behind his eyes and it only spurs your own on.
Why would he be angry with you?!
“Just, stop showing the pilot skin.” He lets your dress go and moves back to his abandoned pile of fruit.
“Are you joking?! What does that even mean, Bucky?” Your blood is boiling.
“He likes you.” Bucky declares, throwing the words over his shoulder as if you’re stupid not to have noticed.
“I-” You stutter, trying to wrap your mind around his words, what he means, why it matters, what his anger could indicate. “So what?”
Bucky’s shoulders tense.
“It doesn’t matter if he likes me or not. In case you haven’t noticed, I am the only woman on this island, so he really doesn’t have much of a selection. If we were back on the mainland, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t spare me a glance.”
“Is that really what matters here?” Bucky seethes, but you still can’t guess as to why he’s so bothered by it.
Unless…
“He didn’t see anything, alright? He had his back turned when I got out of the water.” You assure him.
“Oh, like that ass wouldn’t peek? You’re very naïve.” Bucky mutters.
“Excuse you?” You gasp, all attempts at bottling up your anger abandoned.
“He wants you!” Bucky insists, rising and turning to look at you, closing the distance with two steps to stand close but not too close. Just close enough that you’re both able to shout in each other’s faces. “Can’t you see that? The way he looks at you, he even asked me if you were taken. He was all happy when I told him you didn’t have anyone waiting for you back home.”
Your heart falls, a sudden realization hitting you as you think about all the sweet ways Ryan has indeed been flirting with you. If you were taken…
“So…so what you’re saying is that he asked you if I was taken and you told him I wasn’t, right?” You swallow hard, fighting the lump in your throat as you see that Bucky—as stupid as it is to think it in this way—hadn’t claimed you.
It goes in the face of what you’ve always believed, that women are not objects to be owned by men, and yet here on this island with two of them here alone with you for who knows how long—possibly forever—for Bucky not to stand and tell Ryan that you’re his…but you aren’t, are you?
Hurt and anger flow through you, making your hands tremble.
Bucky doesn’t answer. You shake your head, unable to accept that he doesn’t want you enough to tell Ryan that you’re off limits. That you’re his.
What has all this been over the past three months then? Have you been so stupid and so delusional that you saw things in his behavior that aren’t really there?
“I need space.” You tell him and without hesitation you turn and walk away, into the jungle to be as far away from this emotional blow as you can.
Only, you get two steps before metal is wrapped around your wrist, pulling you back towards him swiftly and easily as if you’re made of nothing more than feathers.
He pulls you against his chest, metal hand extended back behind him as he does. When you crash against him, he wraps it around your waist while his other hand reaches up behind your head to hold you in place as he dips and kisses you hard.
His arms are vices around you, pulling you tight as if he can’t feel you unless you’re right up against him.
After a few moments of contact, his lips soften, melding with yours gently and tenderly.
You’re breathless as you let him lead, relishing in the feel of his kiss as his lips part and the tip of his tongue coaxes your own open.
You gasp but meet him eagerly, letting your body fall against his. Slipping your arms underneath his, you feel the thick, hard planes of his back until you reach his shoulders and pull him towards you as the kiss consumes you both.
Your body is humming. You can feel every shift of his skin against yours like tingling fire. A burning touch that electrifies you as it shifts in meaning.
This is Bucky claiming you. This is his declaration.
He pulls back, a small smack to his lips as he breaks the kiss. Your eyes are hazy and fogged as you open them, searching his face with only half your mind working while the other still lingers on the intensity of his kiss.
You’re breathless too, and you forget so when you breath it’s a rush of air that makes you lightheaded and you cling to him harder so that you won’t fall.
Bucky smiles, adjusting his grip to hold you steady.
He brings his hand up to caress your temple and then your cheek, sliding a tickling thumb along the still tingling skin.
“Be my girl?” He says, voice deep but low and quiet so that only you can hear. It dives into your chest and warms it further, making your legs weak with not only their meaning but tone and the smooth velvet of its flow.
You swallow hard, looking for more breath where there doesn’t seem to be any. It all feels so unreal. Like your daydream as you’d watched him mix clay and chop wood and every muscle of his torso had rippled and flexed for you and you’d wished he would hold you, just like this and kiss you, just like now.
Somehow, you find strength and oxygen enough to speak. “I thought I already was.”
This confession makes his expression soften; it draws his brow down once again as he devours your face before leaning down to claim your lips once more.
You whimper, so please and so relieved that you haven’t been alone in this. You’ve wanted him and he also has been wanting you.
You break his kiss to gasp for air, “Never let me go.”
Bucky sighs, pulling you tighter—as if that’s even possible—against his chest. His hug is crushing and you know that he’s holding you as close as he can but you want it to be even closer.
“Never.” Bucky whispers, sounding emotional too.
You want to see his face, to see the expression that he’s wearing that makes that voice, but you can’t bear to pull away. Instead you bury your face against his neck as he does the same and both of you simply enjoy the embrace.
~~~~~~~~~~
This shift is dynamic.
The way you and Bucky respond to each other’s presence changes instantly and you couldn’t be happier.
As you walk back towards the beach with him, hand in hand, you can’t help the smile that splits your cheeks.
Each of you chances several glances at the other, smiling wider as you make your way.
“What?” Bucky chuckles, shaking his head as you stare.
“If I’d known that making you jealous was the way to get you to make a move…” You tell him.
Bucky shakes his head. “I think I’d have gone crazy if you’d done anything intentionally.”
You can almost picture Bucky’s rage if you’d done something on purpose, throwing yourself on Ryan just to get a rise out of him.
The idea of you wanting anyone’s touch other than Bucky’s is so preposterous that you really don’t know how Bucky could have believed for even one second that you and Ryan were possible.
“I’ve only wanted you, Buck.” You sigh, cuddling closer into his side as you rest your head against his metal bicep.
Bucky sighs deeply, relieved?
“I didn’t want to…assume,” He begins. “We were the only two here and you’re the only woman? Me the only man? I was so afraid that I’d make you feel uncomfortable if you didn’t feel the same way.”
“You could have asked.” You sigh. “But I guess I could have said something too. I could have told you it was okay.”
Bucky shakes his head. “I-I wasn’t nice to you at first. I don’t blame you for thinking I wasn’t feeling it. It’s my own fault.”
You pull him to a stop, tracing the shape of his forearm. “Bucky, none of this is your fault.”
This guilt he carries around with him about the plane, being marooned here, now his behavior when you first crashed?
“You didn’t know me. You saved me. We were strangers then. I don’t blame you for keeping me at a distance. Especially with everything that you’ve gone through and who you are? It’s natural for you to want to be cautious.” You understand his position.
Being the former Winter Soldier could not be easy to carry.
“But I should have been nicer.” He argues, reaches up to stroke your cheek again.
You lean into his touch, suddenly grateful that he can touch you like this away from the fuselage at bedtime.
Bedtime…holy shit. Your stomach erupts into flutters.
You quickly clear your throat and swallow to clear away the thoughts of how this will change bedtime too.
“I should have been more patient.” He continues.
With a smile, you shrug. “Maybe, but then you wouldn’t be you. I needed the kick in the butt. I’ve led a pretty sheltered life. I wasn’t prepared to survive out here. I’m glad you were stern.”
“Stern feels like an understatement. I was mean.” Bucky argues.
“Why are you so damn stubborn? I’m trying to give you a pass here, Barnes.” You gripe, suddenly annoyed again.
Bucky throws his head back and laughs, stroking your cheek with more affection at the sound of your irritation.
“Oh, man. You’re a firecracker.” He observes but doesn’t give you a chance to respond before he’s leaning in to kiss you again.
You push yourself towards him, eager to kiss him again because you can, and you’ve wanted it for so long. The fervor with which you pull him against you should be embarrassing but you’ve been so starved for his affection and now that you have it, you’re going to take advantage of it.
“I really like you.” He whispers as he pulls away.
Your heart is exploding with butterflies and your stomach flips pleasantly.
“I really like you, too, Bucky.” You smile. “So much.”
He gives you one more quick peck before leading you back towards the hut, hand in hand.
As you approach, you put a little more distance between the two of you but keep your hand wrapped around his. Both of you search the area for Ryan, Bucky probably eager for him to see that you two are now together but as you move towards the clay trough, you spot only the bottles of water that you’d asked him to fetch.
Bucky lets go and moves for them, thirsty.
“Well, at least he’s useful.” He says, taking a drink. “Where is he?”
“I don’t know.” You look around, wondering if he’d one back to the fuselage for something. “Maybe he forgot something back at camp?”
“Maybe.” Bucky says, eyeing the way to camp with narrowed eyes. “I don’t know if I trust that guy.”
“Oh, come on, Bucky. I’m already yours.” You tease and turn to fix him with a smile.
Bucky shakes his head, fighting his own but it only makes him give you a heart-stopping half-smile. Pretty pink lips curved on one side in a new expression that you make note of to demand it again someday.
“I’m serious.” He insists. “There’s something off about it. I don’t know what, but I feel like he’s hiding something.”
“Something about the plane?” You wonder, voice serious now as you consider that you’ve only known Ryan for such a short time.
“Yeah.” Bucky nods, moving towards the clay trough where he immediately dips his hands in to mix the sediment that’s settled at the bottom.
“But he’s so nice.” You counter, feeling sad by the thought that Ryan might be two-faced.
“Most bad guys are.” Bucky mutters sinisterly.
You open your mouth to argue when the sound of splashing turns you towards the shoreline.
Rising from the water is Ryan, shirtless, blonde curls plastered against the side of his face. He wipes the water away and freezes for a moment when he spots the two of you on the beach.
He suddenly smiles, moving towards his shirt and pulls it over his head as he approaches.
“Hi.” You offer, squinting against the morning sun. A quick glance at Bucky shows you he’s standing, hands and forearms covered in clay as he stands watching Ryan too.
“Hello.” Ryan replies, moving towards the two of you with relaxed and easy walk. “When did you two get back?”
“Just now.” You smile at him, forcing yourself to see the kind man instead of the suspicious pilot that showed up out of nowhere.
Bucky’s own worries now seeping into you.
“Went for a swim?” You wonder, looking over his shoulder in the direction he came from.
“It’s hot out here.” He explains.
“Did you find anything?” Bucky suddenly asks, his voice full of forced friendliness. “You went to the cabin, right? What were you looking for?”
Ryan freezes by the small fire pit you and he had dug up a few days earlier to cook food on the beach instead of having to run all the way back to camp.
“I did go there, yeah.” He nods. “I wanted to see if mah bag was still there. I had some personal items I was hopin’ had survived the crash.”
“Nothing too important I hope?” And you really do hope it’s nothing that means a whole lot.
Ryan meets your gaze and fixes you with a tight and forlorn grin. “Some pictures of mah son.”
“Your son?!” You gasp, completely shocked by his declaration. “You have a son?”
“Aye, I have a son.” Ryan sighs. “I’ll go get the fish, ya? I’ll cook breakfast. You take a rest.”
“Now he has a son?” Bucky wonders once Ryan is a safe distance away and you honestly can’t blame him for the suspicion you can hear in his voice.
You really don’t know Ryan at all and now have to wonder how much more he might be hiding.
First off, I adore your work! You’re writing is absolutely lovely!
And also I have a request.
Ted is a the popular theater kid and reader is the punk of the school who keeps to their clique. Ted grows an interest for the reader and constantly tries to flirt with them in front of their friends and in private or get a date with them. Reader brushes him off most of the time but grows to like him.
Shakespeare
Ted Nivison x reader [she/her used]
“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?” The tall brunette stood at the front of the English classroom, reading from the book in his hand. The teacher sat at her desk a few paces away, taking note of how he talked. y/n watched him lazily, not quite caring for Shakespeare. “Thou art more lovely and temperate.”
y/n didn’t pay attention as Ted continued the presentation. She flicked her mechanical pencil between her fingers, biding time. “Thank you, Theodore, for sonnet 18. Next is 19– y/n?”
“I chose the annotation project.”
“Thank you. Who had 20?”
Ted took the seat next to y/n. “How’d I do?”
“Not bad. I mean, I’m sure you could’ve done better theater kid.”
“I don’t know. Let me practice it for you and we’ll see.” y/n rolled her eyes, resting her flushed cheek against her hand. “What was yours about?”
“Also romance. I mean it’s half of what the guy wrote about.”
“I could teach you some of his other stuff.”
“Yes. Theodore. The theater tutor.”
“Aw. Is it my aesthetic? Is that the problem?” y/n exaimned the difference between the two of them. Ted wore the same blue jeans, sneakers, and graphic tee to school every day. Of course y/n had a few staple pieces; her leather boots and mix-matched pieces of jewelry, but she did most commonly wear dark or patterned pants and faded shirt.
“It’s a thousand percent the aesthetic.”
Ted closed his notebook, playfully muttering the himself. The school bell rang and y/n stood up, shoving belongings into a book bag as the teacher made announcements to the leaving students.
“Hey. Come see the show.”
“What show?” She pushed through the crowd as Ted followed. y/n could spot her friends group in the distance, waiting just outside the doors.
“The show! Midsummer’s Night Dream. I’m starring in it.”
“Yeah sure. Like I can afford it.” Her hand hit the door, but he stepped in front of her, preventing her from leaving the building. “Ted-“
“Please. Tonight. Seven. I’ll set a ticket aside for you.” She felt her face heat up as moved away slightly. “Might wanna say hi to your friends for me y/n.”
The boy walked away and y/n continued out the door to her and her friends’ lunch period.
———
“I mean. What’s the worst that could happen?” y/n’s friend, Alix, peeled away the paper wrapping around his sandwich. “Do you even like the guy?”
“I don’t- I don’t know.”
“So it could be yes.” Alix leaned in the back of his seat as he took a bite of his lunch. y/n and her friends were sitting in Alix’s truck in the school parking lot, all eating something they either brought from home or bought at a fast food place near the school.
“It’s always wise to indulge in the arts.” Jaz, one of y/n’s other friends spoke from the back seat.
“Dude would you shut up? You took a writing class once.” The last one of the group, Ryan, waved away what Jaz said. “If you like the guy you like him. If you don’t you don’t. Or play with him. I don’t care.”
“I’m not going to play with Ted’s feelings.” y/n searched through her French fries mindlessly. “He Is cute. I don’t know guys.”
“Just go to the show. It can’t be that bad.”
———
Lunch passed, as did the next couple classes, until y/n’s last period of the day. Thankfully, it was a TA period, so there wasn’t much to do.
“Dearie would you run these to the theatrics department for me?” The lady behind the front desk has to be at least 80 at this point, but y/n stood to take the stack of papers from her. “Thank you.”
y/n smiled and left, taking leisure in her walk. The sole of her boots slapped against the off-white linoleum, echoing through the hallways and cafeteria as she crossed the entire building. She never really realized how far the performing arts hall was until walking to it.
The door creaked as it opened to an empty black classroom. “Hello?” She stepped in, her words echoing. She could hear some small commotion deeper into the theater. She followed the noise, finding herself in what looked like a workshop. “Hi?”
“y/n!” She whipped her head to the side to see Ted walking through a large doorway. “Always a pleasure to see you. Especially here. How can I help love?”
y/n brushed off his comment the best she could. “I’m looking for the director? I’ve got some papers to deliver.”
She held out the papers, trying to show Ted, but instead he linked one of his pinkies with hers. “I’ll take you.”
She stared at their linked fingers as Ted dragged her from the workshop to the back of the audience. Ted talked to somebody, but she didn’t quite pay attention.
“And who’s this?”
Looking up, she met eyes with a man she hadn’t quite spoken to before. He wasn’t quite as tall as Ted, and he wore a blue blazer and hiking boots. “This is y/n, from the front office.”
“Ah.” He nodded at Ted. “And is this who-“
“Yes.” Ted cut him short, rubbing at the back of his own neck.
“Well thank you.” The man took the papers from her hand. “We hope to see you tonight.”
She watched him walk away before turning back to Ted. “What’s he mean?”
“Well, he’s who I had to talk to about your ticket. You are coming tonight aren’t you?”
“I can swing by.”
“Good.” Ted brought their still conjoined hands up and lightly kissed her knuckles. “I’ll be watching for you.”
———
y/n had been waiting for a while now.
When school had got out, she had hung around with her friends for a while, getting something to eat and doing some homework, but now it was 6:53 and she was stuck in line at the ticket counter. In front of her were five people. She was five people away from whatever was to come out of tonight.
“Next!” The line shuffled forwards as two people walked inside. She bounced on her feet, watching the exchange of cash between the student running the ticket booth and the patrons. “Next!”
“Hi I think I had a ticket reserved for me.” The student looked over their shoulder at something, then back to y/n.
“Who reserved it?”
“Ted Nivison?”
“Oh. Okay then this is for you.” The student handed over a rectangular ticket with a seat number stamped on the bottom. “Enjoy the show.”
y/n walked through the double doors into the audience. Most of the seats were full, and it took her a few minutes to find the seat marked for her. When she did, she set her backpack down in the front of her, noticing something underneath her seat. It was a folded piece of paper with a note from Ted.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see, so long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
-Ted
She stuck the note in her pocket and traded it for her phone. 6:59 pm. She silenced it and looked back to the stage, anxiously waiting. The lights dimmed and she stared up the stage. The curtains began to open and it revealed Ted standing in Grecian style clothing with minimal armor pieces. He stood with his hand outstretched to a girl wearing similar clothing.
Ted’s eyes surveyed the audience, landing on y/n with a smirk. “Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour draws on apace…”
y/n sat in awe for the next two hours. She watched as Ted moved across the stage, putting to life the story as if he’d lived it. She watched as the characters came to life, as the set moved, and as the lights changed. And two hours later, the curtain closed and the cast came together to do bows. She clapped furiously, then watched everyone stand from their seats and leave. She stood, trying to grab her things. The theater had been nearly emptied by now, people rushing out to say hi to people they knew in the cast.
y/n looked around. To the side of the curtain, just peeking out, was someone waving. She walked over, realizing it was Ted.
“Hey there! What’d you think?”
“That was amazing, Ted.” The boy smiled, taking her hand in his. He began to pull her backstage with him. “Wait Ted-“
“It’s fine don’t worry. Here.” Ted pulled her to stand near the classroom area. “Give me two minutes.”
She watched Ted enter the dressing room. For a moment, it was quiet, until everyone else started to file in. The room quickly became loud, filling with student’s voices.
“Hey.” Ted tapped y/n on the shoulder. “I know it’s a lot. Come with me.” Ted draped an arm over her shoulders as he pulled her outside into the crisp night air. “Better?”
“Yeah. Better. Ted that was- that was awesome.”
“I’m glad I can impress you.” Ted checked his phone. “It’s nine already. You have plans?”
“No I-“
“Come get dinner with me. My treat.”
“Ted. It sounds like you’re asking me on a date.” She lightly nudged him with her elbow.
“It’s only a date if you say yes.”
y/n paused, taken aback by the sudden forwardness. “If I say yes?”
“You don’t have to! Don’t think you have to!” Ted gestured with his hands in a panicked motion. “I just- I think you’re really cool and pretty with your style and I’ve always liked you for as long as I can remember and I was just wondering-“
“Yes.”
He paused, eyes wide as a blush crept onto his face. “Yes? Yes as in yes a date? Our date?”
y/n stood on her tiptoes, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Take me on a date theater boy.”
Ted wrapped her in a hug, pressing a kiss to her nose. “Anywhere you want.”
Squirrel Girl is Super Gay for her Roommate and I Want Everyone to Know
A gay infodump of sensible length by Rachel Tikvah
ALRIGHT, SO The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was the very first comic that I ever read regularly, back when I was looking for more stories with strong female protagonists but didn't really know why. Back then I just thought I really liked strong female characters and not that I was being gay on main, but now I know the truth. The comic had a 5-year run, and it was the first time that Squirrel Girl, AKA Doreen Green, had had her own series. She had a brief run in the mid-2000's where she was established as someone who could beat up Thanos with her bare hands well, more like squirrel hands but was mostly a joke character that happened to be incredibly buff and had indestructible plot armor. USG decided that Doreen's next major life goal would be to enroll in college to become a computer scientist, because her writer, Ryan North, is really into computer science and they basically gave him free rein over Squirrel Girl canon for five whole years. Like, a solid third of the plots are solved with some kind of computer science smarts. It’s really cool. Anyway this is Doreen in one of the gayest solo pictures I could find of her on short notice, which is also one of the variant covers from the actual series:
And this is her college roommate, Nancy Whitehead:
I'm like, 99% certain that Ryan North intended for them to end up as a couple and Disney!Marvel told him no. So he decided to make them AS GAY FOR EACH OTHER AS POSSIBLE without explicitly saying that they were a couple, and it ended up going under the radar. What follows is evidence for that claim. I’m going to put a "read more” after this so it doesn’t clutter everyone’s dashboards, but please read on if you’re interested. There’s a lot of cute gayness after this point. I’m also going to put all of the image descriptions at the end, since they take up a lot of space and I don’t want to break up the flow of the post. Finally, a quick spoiler alert for one arc in the middle of the series and a couple major plot points from the final few issues.
AND THEY WERE ROOMMATES
So for a while it was just kind of hinted at that they’re in a relationship, mostly because they were basically domestic life partners for like, two whole years in-universe before the comic run ended. But it really came to a head with an arc that was ran about 2/3 of the way through the series. Some pictures of them being, like, so cute together in general and/or talking about how much they care about each other before I get to that arc, though:
Also Doreen describes her and Nancy's cat as "co-parented" in one of the last issues:
ANYWAY, THE ARC. THE HYPERTIME ARC. So one of the villains created for the Squirrel Girl run (I think they liked making weird shit canon just because they could) was a dude who went by the name "EpicCrimez". He’s a crime streamer. He livestreams his crimes to an online audience. I don't know. *Throws up hands*
He had some kind of laser gun that he built out of scavenged alien tech but didn't really know what it did, so he shot it at Doreen and Nancy for kicks. It shot them into hypertime, so suddenly the rest of the world was moving at a fraction of the pace that they were. They were moving so quickly that they were slated to live out their entire lives over the span of a single weekend if they didn't figure out how to reverse the effects. And...they did. Live out their entire lives together. For the two of them, they were the only two people in the world. There were other people, but they looked like statues unless you spent a very long time observing them. Doreen and Nancy grew old together in a world where they only had each other. This is an incredibly cute domestic scene from a little while after they found themselves in hypertime:
Gosh, I wish I could find more official art from that arc of them just living together, it was so good. But the point is, they were both old by the time that Nancy figured out how to get them out of hypertime. And it wasn't ideal. Their bio signatures were stored in the gun that EpicCrimez shot, and they could essentially "reboot" their bodies from when they were first shot and send themselves back into the regular timestream. But they wouldn't remember anything about the life that they had shared together. Nancy almost didn't want to do it. She raised the possibility of them just living out the rest of their lives together, because she didn't want to forget their life together. This is the conversation they had:
"I don't regret any of it. I don't want to lose it, and I don't want to lose us." "You're not getting rid of me that easily." Every time I look at that last picture, which took up an entire page of the comic, I start to cry. We’re seeing the final moments of two people who love each other more than anything, who were each other's entire lives, savoring their last moments together and wondering what the future holds. Sacrificing the life that they built together so that their younger selves could live a better, fuller one. Dying in each other’s arms, scared but comforted by the fact that they had each other. And then the arc ends, and they can't remember anything, so the status quo is restored. They have some paintings they made of each other while they were living together in hypertime, but they move on pretty quickly without ever knowing the significance of those lived decades. Still, it's clear in the arcs that follow and the adventures they embarked on afterward that they would die for each other. All of that continues until the end of the last arc. Their shared apartment's been blown up at this point by a supervillain who wanted to ruin Doreen’s life before eventually killing her. And in the aftermath of the fight, they're sifting through the wreckage for anything that survived (don't worry, the cat got out in time) when they find the picture that they painted of themselves during the hypertime arc:
They have a really cute conversation about how this chapter of their life is over, but they're going to be okay and they're going to build a new life together. And then Nancy basically tells Doreen that she can't live without her:
And then Doreen says something super queer-coded about how she likes the idea of the world knowing her secret identity now:
On the very last page of the comic, after all of the action is over and the series is about to end, they're talking to each other in what's supposed to be a twitter thread and Doreen asks Nancy a very thinly veiled question about whether she still wants to spend time with her now that her identity's out. She pretends it's about a class project, but it's really not about the class project. Here's how that conversation goes:
With no knowledge of what happened during the weekend when they shared their entire lives together, without ever having heard Doreen say it to her before, Nancy’s heart still knows which words to choose. "...you're not getting rid of me that easily. <3" I believe that the author of the series, Ryan North, did as much as he possibly could to portray them as a couple without saying it outright. And as the last piece of evidence to support that claim, I want to share a response he wrote in one of the series' last-ever letter columns:
"as for more Doreen and Nancy, I hope so too. A Squirrel Girl book without Nancy would feel like--like--like some sort of hypothetical "Super" "Man" book without an equally hypothetical "Lois" "Lane"!" It's easy to write off this analysis as wishful thinking, or as a misreading of the subtext. But when the author of the series says that these two characters are meant to always be together and compares them to one of the most famous couples in any comic series ever, it's clear that there's more to it than that.
Some Additional Thoughts: 1) Doreen and Nancy are both probably bisexual or pansexual, since they both expressed romantic interest in men throughout the series but they’re both clearly interested in each other too. There might be an element of demiromanticism there as well if part of the reason that they’re into each other romantically is because of how emotionally close they’ve become over the years. I want to make sure that that facet of their romantic orientations doesn’t get erased, because bi and pan folks get erased enough as it is. Neither Doreen nor Nancy are lesbians, just super-cool WLWs.
2) HERE’S WHAT THE ISSUE 50 VARIANT COVER LOOKED LIKE
That’s NOT a fun, totally straight way to pose with your platonic gal pal. They’re so incredibly cute together! I have no words! In Closing If you got this far, thank you so much for letting me talk to you about a comic that’s very important to me, and a couple in that comic that I care about very much. I spent way too long making this (six hours and counting), mostly in writing the image descriptions, and I’m very proud of my work but very tired now. Hyperfixation is a hell of a drug. If this resonated with you, please consider reblogging it so that more folks can see it. If not, even a like is nice. I’d also love to engage with people who have their own thoughts, so feel free to leave some comments in the notes if you’ve got an idea/a reaction/any additional cute Doreen/Nancy scenes that you’d like to share with me. At any rate, this post has gone on long enough and I don’t want to ask y’all to read any more than you have to. So have a great day, good morning / afternoon / night, and stay safe. Thanks again for reading! ~Rachel Tikvah, AKA @transthaumaturge Image Descriptions: Image 1: [ID: Squirrel Girl, a young woman with light skin, is posing in front of a brick wall that she seems to have crashed through, leaving a perfect outline of her body. She’s facing away but looking backwards over her shoulder at us and smiling. She’s flexing upward with her right arm and has her left fist resting on her left hip. Her sidekick, a squirrel named Tippy-Toe, is standing in the cutout she left in the wall and is making the same exact pose while wearing a light pink bow around her neck. Squirrel Girl is wearing brown lace-up boots, fur-lined hot pants over grey tights, and a brown fur-lined jacket with sleeves that come up to her forearms and a symbol of an acorn embroidered into the back. She’s also wearing a hairband with fake squirrel ears on it over short reddish-brown hair. She has a large squirrel tail coming out of her hot pants that sweeps down in a curve behind her lower legs. The illustration is drawn so that everything is bathed in the light of a sunset, and Doreen is casting shadows on the wall in front of her.] Image 2: [ID: Two frames depicting a scene between Doreen and Nancy in their college dorm room, with many cardboard boxes still not unpacked and sitting on a bare bed mattress. Nancy Whitehead is a young woman with dark brown skin and short, curly black hair. She's wearing black tights, a white dress-top, and a yellow cardigan over that. Her arms are crossed as she holds her white cat, Mew, against her chest. Doreen is wearing grey tights and a black long-sleeve shirt with a wide collar and white stripes across the chest. She's holding Tippy-Toe up to Nancy with both hands so she can see her better. The following dialogue ensues: Nancy: "A squirrel? But weren't you the one who was all about pets not being allowed in--" Doreen: "Yeah, I know. But this really interesting person I met today told me that obeying an unjust law is itself unjust." Nancy: "...You know, I was worried I'd get a weird roommate, but you're all right, Doreen Green."] Image 3: [ID: Doreen and Nancy are both sitting on a lavender-pink couch in nightclothes. Doreen has short, orange hair. She is wearing a loose-fitting grey long-sleeve shirt and steel-blue cutoff shorts; Nancy has cropped black hair. She is wearing a dark purple top with sleeves that come down to her upper arms, and loose-fitting navy-blue shorts that come down to her lower thighs. Doreen is side-hugging Nancy as she says, with an ecstatically happy smile, “Nancy, you’re the greatest. You know that, right?” Nancy gives Doreen a full smile as she responds, “I’d always suspected it, but it is nice to have it confirmed.”] Image 4: [ID: Nancy is shown from the shoulders up. She has short, curly black hair. She’s wearing large, disc-shaped gold dangle earrings, and a red jacket with prominent shoulders and a yellow collar. She’s fixing the observer with an angry, determined stare as she says, “She knows this man wouldn’t dream about betraying her, or he’d have to answer to me.”] Image 5: [ID: Doreen and Nancy are eating breakfast at the brown, circular kitchen table in their apartment. Doreen’s wearing a skin-tight athletic crop top that’s striped in black, red, white, and blue. Her arm muscles are well-defined and clearly visible as she puts a spoon in her mouth, closing her eyes as she does so. She has a bowl of cereal in front of her, and half a banana in front of that. Nancy is sitting to her left in a pink camisole top that’s also exposing her muscles, scrolling through something on her smartphone. Her hair is in a yellow fabric wrap that’s knotted on one side of her head. A cup of coffee sits in front of her. The clear blue sky is visible through the window centered on the wall behind them.] Image 6: [ID: Nancy and Doreen are facing away from the vantage point, walking towards an Empire State University campus building and holding hands with their fingers intertwined. Nancy is wearing a long knee-length grey coat and black knee-high boots, with a baby-blue side bag hanging from her left shoulder. Doreen is wearing a magenta sweatshirt with the periwinkle-lined hood down, light brown form-fitting denim pants, and black ankle-high boots, with a dark brown side bag hanging from her right shoulder. Trees and bushes hem the walkway in on either side. The building in front of them is dark red, with glass doors and a row of floor-to-ceiling windows on the second floor. Doreen is saying “...we’re just going to have to take the long way around.”] Image 7: [ID: Doreen is facing towards the vantage point and is visible from the legs up, standing in front of a pile of rubble in the background. She’s wearing high-waisted light blue shorts over black tights, and a red windbreaker with sleeves ending at her upper arms that’s opened to reveal a white t-shirt underneath. Tippy-Toe is sitting on her shoulder. There are two people facing Doreen, each slightly in frame and silhouetted in black against the light of the setting sun. Doreen is fixing them with an angry, determined expression, resting her right fist at her hip while she gesticulates with her left hand and says, “So! I don’t know about you all, but Melissa kidnapping my friend and blowing up my life and my house and almost blowing up my co-parented cat makes me feel like giving her a piece of my mind. Friends...”] Image 8: [ID: A full comic page. EpicCrimez is looking like a dork in a green and black skin-tight jumpsuit, bright red ski goggles, and a green wig cap with his brown hair sticking out the back in a mullet. He’s standing inside a jewelry store and holding up a fist of expensive gems and pearls-on-strings as holds up his smartphone and speaks into it. He’s facing off against Squirrel Girl, with her allies Koi Boi and Chipmunk Hunk on her right, and Nancy and Brain Drain on the left. The following scene ensues: EpicCrimez: “And for those of you just tuning in, welcome to another successful heist by your boy EpicCrimez, streaming live! Now with 10% more live crime action than any other streamer! Don’t forget to like and subscribe!! I know some of you in EpicCrimez Nation have been forgetting to do that lately. Not acceptable.” Squirrel Girl: “You picked the wrong small business to rob, crime-initiator! Because this mall is protected by super heroes.” Brain Drain: “HELLO” SG: “And also an unrelated civilian friend I brought along too!” Nancy: (Not looking up from her phone) “ ‘Sup.” EC: “Check it out--Squirrel Girl and her miscellaneous friends are here! It’s action you won’t find on any other channel!” SG: “Are you...streaming your robberies?” (Nancy pockets her phone) EC: “Yeah I am! For money reasons! And with you “heroes” in it, I’ll make even more!” SG: (Whispering to Nancy:) “Question: a fight scene just gets him more traffic, which lets him profit from this crime even more--so does this mean we don’t fight him?” N: (Whispering back:) “I feel like letting him go causes more harm, but I look forward to us teasing apart the moral implications of this later.” SG: “Nice.” SG: (No longer whispering:) “I’ll like and subscribe, EpicCrimez! I’ll like fighting crime, and subscribe... to a worldview wherein the strong protect the weak!” EC: “Oh my gosh, are you like wholesome Spider-Man or something??” At the bottom of the page, small text says: “Wholesome Spider-Man, Wholesome Spider-Man/Does whatever a wholesome spider can/Is he tough?/Listen bud/He’s here to hear you talk about your day and tell you it’ll all be fine while taking you out for your favorite meal for dinner because he knows you deserve it.”] Image 9: [ID: Another full comic page. Doreen and Nancy are in their apartment together, and their friends Tomas and Brian (AKA Chipmunk Hunk and Brain Drain respectively) are frozen as they look down at the machine that Nancy is on her knees in front of, working on. Nancy, barefoot, is wearing cerulean-blue athletic pants, a black long-sleeve spandex shirt without shoulders, and narrow-framed glasses. Her hair is partially covered by a yellow cloth head wrap tied on the left side, with black dreadlocks spilling out the side and back. The machine in front of her is made of dull grey metal, about a meter tall and roughly circular. Wires dangle out of a hatch that Nancy is fiddling with. Doreen is wearing a flowing, dark-purple pantsuit with wide, ankle-length legs and a halter top with the sleeves tied off at her shoulders. Her shoes are light-brown ankle boots with a horizontal gap on the bridge of each foot. Her wavy orange hair is parted in the middle and down past her shoulders. She looks incredibly cute. The following scene ensues: Doreen: “What do you think?” Nancy: “I think--come on you stupid screw--I think we’re still years away from this thing working, if it ever does. Who knew time machine construction is really hard, except of course for everyone who has attempted it?” (She wipes her forehead with the back of her hand) D: “Hah! No, I mean my new outfit.” N: (Looking up and checking her gf out:) “Doreen! You look amazing!!” D: “Liberated it from a very expensive department store uptown!” N: (Now standing) “Tony paid for it?” D: Tony will eventually discover he was kind enough to leave some expensive jewelry in trade, yes. I pinned a note to him so he knows.” N: “There really are advantages to being friends with billionaire playboy genius philanthropists.” D: “Right?!” N: (Taking Doreen’s hands in hers:) “It’s a shame we can’t take a picture of you all dolled up.” D: “Not without standing still for a few months, yeah. But I was thinking about that. I picked up something else at another store downtown. Thought maybe it could help us with that.” (Holding up a shopping bag with one hand while still holding onto Nancy’s hand with the other:) “Nancy Whitehead, I thought you and I might take up painting sometime.” At the bottom of the page, small text says: “Tony Stark moves from meeting to meeting, his body accumulating dozens of notes every second. He sighs. Stuff like this didn’t happen before he knew Doreen. But then he smiles, because after all...stuff like this didn’t happen before he knew Doreen.”] Images 10-16: [ID: Several pages worth of comic frames, posted together to depict one scene. Doreen and Nancy are now old women, likely in their seventies or eighties. Doreen has short, grey hair. She’s wearing a tan button-up waistcoat and an orange ascot, brown flats with an olive-green skirt, knee-length and softly pleated. Her tail is sticking out the back of her skirt over the top, bushy and brown but with stiffer, less-dense hair. Nancy has her grey-black hair done up in a ponytail, a mass of tight curls behind her head. She’s wearing thin oval glasses, black dress pants, black flats, and a lavender cardigan with a flower motif along the edges, open to show the yellow-orange top underneath. They’re standing in front of a completed time machine. On either side are tall pieces of machinery, and in the middle is a round, flat metal dais hooked up to everything else with snaking cables. The following scene ensues: Nancy: “So...this is it, babe. The new machine.” Doreen: “Your secret project! Nancy, it looks like you started from scratch!” N: That’s because I did. I finally realized our old machine was never going to work. Maybe if we had a few more decades, but...there’s no time. And given that our backs are to the wall, I took a risk. I disassembled the gun right down to the metal, and examined all the parts. And I did find something: a data chip. Doreen, the gun stored our bio signatures when it us.” D: “What are you saying?” N: “I’m saying my new machine won’t send us back in time, and we’ll still have lost a weekend of real time. But it will restore our bodies to normal time.” D: (Hugging Nancy tight:) “Nancy! You saved us!!” N: (Resting her hands on Doreen’s shoulders:) “Not--quite. There’s a catch, Doreen. Our bodies will make it...but we won’t. Look, Doreen...I’m an old woman. I’ve spent most of my life in hypertime. This wasn’t how I saw my life going, but...I don’t regret any of it. I don’t want to lose it, and I don’t want to lose us.” D: “I don’t understand.” N: “It’s like restoring from backup. Our bodies will be restored to how they were the moment we were first hit. But--that necessarily includes our brains, too. Everything we’ve done since we entered hypertime--our entire lives spent together...we’ll forget.” (She looks at Doreen in distress) D: “I don’t either, Nancy. You’ve been the most important person in my life. But if we do go back--we can do it again. All of it. It might not happen again quite the same way, but--well, like you say...we’ll have all the time in the world.” N: (Their faces inches apart, they both tilt their heads down and smile sadly:) “Twist my arm, why don’t you.” (They both step onto the dais holding hands, and blue energy starts to ripple around them:) “You filled up Spidey’s web-shooters before we go?” D: “Yep. Again.” N: “You and me, saving the world.” D: “Well,” (holding Nancy’s hand in both of her own) "No reason we can’t do it twice.” N: “You know, there’s a chance things could turn out differently, now that we’ll have video games to distract us. In 40 years we might decide we don’t like hanging out after all.” D: (Hugging Nancy even tighter than before as the energy from the time machine starts to envelop them, resting her face in the nape of Nancy’s neck:) “Nah. You’re not getting rid of me that easily.”] Image 17: [ID: Doreen and Nancy are sifting through the charred rubble of their apartment as night starts to fall around them. Doreen is wearing faded blue jeans and a navy blue t-shirt with a Captain America star in the middle. Over top of the shirt, she’s wearing a dark reddish-brown leather vest with four metal studs at the four points of the folded-out collar. Nancy is wearing black tights and a light green long-sleeve shirt with olive-green sleeves. The front of the shirt has a picture of Cat-Thor, Cat God of Cat Thunder’s head on it. The following scene ensues: Doreen: “So I know we’re only a few hours into it, Nancy, but I think my identity being public isn’t gonna be as bad as I thought.” Nancy: “Oh?” D: “Yeah, Tony’s given me lots of tips, and it does honestly help to know that my parents are protected by a robot tree with laser eyes and my friends live in a city with the most super heroes per square mile.” N: “Most super villains too, but--Hold on. I think I found it.” (Nancy lifts a picture frame out of the wreckage, charred around the edges but otherwise no worse for wear. It has a painting inside of it of Doreen and Nancy, arm-in-arm, from hypertime. Doreen is wearing the lavender pantsuit from before, and Nancy is wearing a tight-fitting lilac dress.) “...And it looks like you and I made it through just fine.”] Images 18-19: [ID: Two later comic panels from the same scene. They’re wearing the same outfits, but Nancy’s now cradling her white cat, Mew, in the crook of her left arm while she holds onto the picture frame with her right hand. The following scene ensues: Doreen: “Come on, let’s talk about it! If we’re starting a new chapter in our lives, and we can decide what’s in it, what do you want it to contain?” Nancy: “Doreen...” D: “What are the three things you can’t live without, Nancy Whitehead?” N: (Holding up the picture so that Doreen can see it:) “Fine. If you must know, all this girl needs to be happy are cats and squirrels and knitting and computers and friends and secret tattoos and super heroes and lots and lots of love. Also food and shelter. And water. And internet.” D: “That’s more than three things.”] Image 20: [ID: Same scene as before, a single frame with a close-up on Doreen from her chest upwards. Doreen cups her chin with one of her hands and says, “Honestly--I thought about it. I really did. But I realized that where I am now, I’m safe and I’m loved and I kinda like the idea of not having to lie to people anymore, you know? Even if it is just a lie of omission. I want to share my whole self with the world. I don’t want to have to hide who I am anymore.”] Image 21: [ID: Something resembling a twitter thread, with dialogue between Nancy and Doreen stacked chronologically as horizontal boxes. Their respective names and handles are at the top of each of their comments. Nancy is Nancy W. and @sewwiththeflo, Doreen is Squirrel Girl and @unbeatablesg. The following conversation ensues: Nancy: “You think I’d leave you high and dry??” Doreen: “I think I don’t want our lateness harming your grades and therefore harming your post-secondary education or career choices and therefore harming your ENTIRE LIFE?!” “So yeah I think you should switch to someone else, real talk. I honestly don’t mind, I promise.” Nancy: “Please. If there’s one thing I know about you, about me, and about how we spend our future together, it’s this. Doreen Green...” “...you’re not getting rid of me that easily. <3″] Image 22: [ID: A paragraph of text, black text on a yellow background. “As for more Doreen and Nancy, I hope so too. A Squirrel Girl book without Nancy would feel like--like--like some sort of hypothetical “Super” “Man” book without an equally hypothetical “Lois” “Lane”!”] Image 23: [ID: A group picture of Squirrel Girl and friends sitting down on a grassy hill and watching the sunset together. Kraven the Hunter is in the foreground for some reason, looking almost directly at the camera. In the background we see Koi Boi, Mary Mahajan, Chipmunk Hunk, Brain Drain, and Mew the Cat. In the middle of the shot, Doreen and Nancy sit together. Doreen is in her superhero outfit with Tippy-Toe on her right shoulder, and Nancy is in a yellow cardigan and jeans on Doreen’s left. They’re holding hands, fingers intertwined, as Nancy leans against Doreen with her whole body. Their heads are tilted inward towards each other, the side of Doreen’s head touching the side of Nancy’s, as they look off into the distance together.]
AU where Castle buys The Old Haunt and realizes a few months down the road one of the bartenders has a side job of Solving Crimes?
“I’m sorry, what was that, Castle?”
And Castle, okay, is like.
“I was surprised too, but if you don’t believe me, just ask him.”
In which the “him” in question is the guy waiting in an interrogation room because a couple of uniforms checking out reports of gunshots found him standing over the body and also Castle got a phone call and anyway.
“Huh.”
And then shenanigans in which Kevin Ryan sort of kind of works for Castle???
(“You totally do, I sign your checks, and also there was the whole...thing about new management back when I bought the place and you call me ‘Boss’ when I walk in and - “)
He also used to be a cop until Reasons and now tends bar and the things about crime solving on the side because friends and friends of friends and also random people have heard about him, and really, you know. It’s more of a hobby.
“A hobby.”
Kevin grins, all sunshine and flowers and Esposito is slowly, so slowly, losing his shit because Kevin Ryan is sweet, polite. The kind of guy everyone likes. Beckett likes him and they just found about about him an hour ago.
(But he’s a little shit to Esposito.)
“Yeah, I mean. Some people knit, I, uh. Do this?”
Like the man doesn’t know how he got into the whole solving crime by moonlight gig.
“Well, I mean. That’s a sometimes thing. Usually I’m tending bar at night.”
>:((((((((((((((((((((((((((
And on and on and maybe, idk, there’s a whole...werewolf thing in there too because you know me and werewolves, right?
Kevin had problems adjusting after being bitten on a case – “It’s a whole story, I wouldn’t want to bore you,” but he’s got a handle on it now, and anyway.
Kevin and his life of tending bar at The Old Haunt, Solving Crimes, and the whole being a Werewolf deal, and he’s like, it is what it is, you know? (Alternatively, “Life in the big city, never a dull moment!!1!” like Kevin hasn’t lived there all his life, and also what does that even mean, and is he trying to say the werewolf thing is just something that happens in New York? Is he???)
But also the thing where he’s having the best damn time fucking with Detective Esposito and also flirting and poor Esposito just doesn’t know what the hell is going on?
And then there’s the time they have to Kiss For Great Justice – or, okay, to avoid getting caught by some baddies and anyway, such a hardship, you know?
Plus, Kevin with his werewolf strength just manhandling Esposito – totally not something Esposito would like to experience again in a different setting – and anyway.
That was a thing that happened, and no, Castle, Esposito will not go into detail so just stop taking notes.
(Kevin off to the side, though? Thinking about it.)
And then, idk, some Thinking and Kevin gets a P.I. license – makes sense to do it since he’s got all these people coming to him for help and anyway, yes.
Montgomery is like – “Not only do we have Castle helping out on cases, but now there’s a P.I.?”
And Kevin’s like “Only sometimes, though?” like that makes it better, but he’s a damn good bartender and Montgomery’s like, maybe if I drink enough I’ll forget about all of this and also it will become someone else’s problem</i> because if ever there was a reason to drink it would be Beckett and her team and anyway, shenanigans.
Castle lets Kevin turn part of The Old Haunt’s basement into space for the P.I. gig – files and such. Boring paperwork.
Sometimes he meets with clients upstairs in the bar – before the place opens up for the night or whenever, and Castle is just ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ about it because what mystery writer doesn’t love a good P.I. story?
Also, also, later in the Nikki Heat series a P.I. shows up who lives to ~torment Ochoa and make his life miserable and anyway? (Kevin’s like :DDDDDDDDDDDD about it because of course he is.)
(Plus maybe there’s some charity cause around Halloween or whatever with a short story about a werewolf P.I. - come on, Elrod’s got the vampire P.I. in prohibition-era Chicago, why shouldn’t Castle have modern day werewolf P.I.?)
ANYWAY.
Yes.
Esposito is like >:(((((((((((((( whenever Kevin’s cases and theirs line up and Beckett sticks Kevin with him – “At least yours knows proper police procedure/protocol, Esposito!” and also “Do you really want to trade, Esposito?” because they love Castle, of course they do, and yet.
Doesn’t matter though, because Shenanigans still happen.
(And, okay. Kevin’s helpful and also saves his life a time or two – “I mean, I didn’t know we were keeping score?” and there are times it’s nice to have someone to talk to, like on stakeouts and such.)
Plus, it’s always kind of hilarious watching the Big, Tough Guys zero in on Kevin as the ~weak link and then running into the brick wall of his werewolf constitution?
And also Kevin and Esposito sparring together not long after they meet and Beckett keeps sticking the two of them together and Esposito is like, yeah, yeah, sure. Guy says he was in narcotics, mentioned doing a hefty stint undercover before everything went to hell, but just look at him! Definitely got bullied in school, you know?
So sparring and Kevin all “If you insist,” and Esposito being like “Wait, no, I - “ because Kevin’s smirking and he has a bad feeling about things, and also Esposito suddenly remembers how Kevin put that guy who charged him on the ground in nothing flat, didn’t even break a sweat doing it. Which. The guy in question was easily twice Kevin’s size and -
Anyway.
The sparring matches early on where Esposito learned Kevin can handle himself and also that cold showers are a lifesaver, y’know?
Also the thing with all the flirting and whatnot and at some point Esposito is like oh, no, he’s hot, but it’s a realization quickly followed by oh no, he wears sweater vests unironcially and however will he be able to reconcile the two?
And Kevin okay, standing there watching Esposito have these dual realizations – Esposito and his Night of Epiphanies brought on by too much to drink or a concussion and Kevin shows up after being drunk/concussion-dialed and anyway.
“Well, if I thought you’d remember this in the morning I’d have a suggestion that would take care of both those problems of yours, but since you are, what say you sleep it off/get that head checked.”
And then Kevin just being :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD the next day and Esposito has no idea why, but he’s rightfully distrustful of it, and anyway.
They figure it out in the end and all that good stuff.
(P.S. Castle gets Kevin a vest to wear when they’re going into Dangerous Situations that says P.I. or something along those lines? Kevin is like *eye-roll*, but not so secretly loves the thing because it makes Esposito *eye-roll* harder, and anyway, yes.)
#castle nonsense#castle#rysposito#technically not a fic#vagrant fic#also werewolf au#but it's kind of a side-thing#???
